Jack Martin talks to THR at the THR X TikTok Awards Weekend Party about the fan response to the 'La Brea' series finale. Plus, he gives advice to those who want to move from TikTok into the entertainment industry.
Transcript
00:00La Brea just recently ended. What was the viewer response to the series finale like for you?
00:05I mean, I think people liked it. I liked it, and I'm a viewer, so I mean, you know, I think it was cool.
00:12It's like it ended with the family walking off into the sunset, and I think that's kind of what you want.
00:18If you don't know what it is, it's about a family falling into a sinkhole and going to 10,000 B.C., and they get split apart.
00:24So them finally being arm-in-arm and being happy, I think, is like the ideal situation.
00:29So I had a happy little scene running into my mom's arms that was mirrored with the beginning of the series, so that was fun.
00:38We're here at a TikTok party. Does this feel like a homecoming for you at all?
00:42Yeah. I mean, you know, I'll always love TikTok.
00:45I think when I first booked the show, I was like, should I stop posting TikToks?
00:52And then I realized I love it so much that I will never stop unless, I don't know, the house bans it or something,
00:57which I would be crying, but I plan on doing it forever until I'm, like, you know, in a walker and I can't move.
01:06I will still be posting TikToks.
01:08I feel like you're truly the gold standard of being a TikTok star and becoming an actual celebrity and a real actor.
01:15What advice would you give to other people who are on TikTok posting their comedy, posting skits, sketches,
01:20who, you know, want to be making television shows like you are?
01:23I mean, I think just what I would say is that, like, it's not that deep and have fun with it.
01:29I think the first few times I posted, I was like, like, literally for the first two days,
01:34I was just excited about going viral and I was trying way too hard.
01:37And when I started finding success and having fun is when I just posted whatever I want to have fun with it.
01:43And my video, I mean, as maybe you've seen, my videos are unhinged and a little insane.
01:49And I think it's just because it is something I do to have a lot of fun.
01:52And what's awesome about it is it's just a pure creative outlet.
01:56And now you can post up to 10 minutes.
01:58Like, you can put anything on there.
02:00My friend put a full short film.
02:03It was dramatic.
02:04It was, like, 10 minutes long on there.
02:07And you can do that.
02:07And, you know, it's just, like, whatever makes your heart sing.
02:10You know, it's, like, happy feet.
02:11So handsome.
02:12Oh, my God.
02:12Hey.
02:13How are you?
02:15I saw you when I walked in.
02:17I was like, I'm going to come tackle him.
02:20Oh, my God.
02:20Stop.
02:21You.
02:23I feel like I'm always seeing your name in headlines now of new projects that you're working on.
02:27What are you working on that's coming up right now?
02:29Well, I mean, a lot of it I can't talk about because that's just sort of how it works, unfortunately.
02:34But I'm super excited about it.
02:36You know, it's awesome.
02:38It's bittersweet to be done with La Brea after three years.
02:40But it's also really exciting to be starting on new things.
02:44But you'll be seeing a lot more of it coming out soon.
02:48And, yeah, I just can't wait.
02:49I mean, every day I still kind of can't believe I'm lucky enough to be able to do this.
02:54It's honestly, and I'm not being, like, a pretentious dude about this, the happiest I ever am.
03:01Camera roll to cut.
03:02It's just so much fun.
03:03And I'm so grateful to be able to do it.
03:06Of course, we're celebrating Oscar nominees tonight.
03:09Who gave your favorite on-screen performance of the year?
03:12I mean, it's hard to top Robert Downey Jr.
03:15I mean, he's so incredible in Oppenheimer.
03:17I thought Devine Joy Randolph was absolutely amazing.
03:21I just mumbled there.
03:22I do know how to pronounce her name.
03:23I promise she's amazing.
03:26I mean, Emma Stone in Poor Things was so phenomenal.
03:29Mark Ruffalo, too.
03:30I mean, I'm listing so many people.
03:32But they were all so fantastic.
03:35Man, if I had to pick one, maybe Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things, which is, like, a real, you know, maybe not the most common answer.
03:48But I just think it was such a transformative performance.
03:52I mean, that is not at all what I was expecting to see.
03:55And I think most people feel the same way.
03:57Watching an actor go that far outside what they're known for and just such a character in a world like that is wild.
04:05I mean, he's so amazing.
04:07Which movie are you rooting for for Best Picture?
04:09I mean, The Holdovers was my favorite movie of the year.
04:13I feel like it's not going to win just based on, like, the betting markets of it all.
04:16But I love that movie.
04:18And everyone in it is so good.
04:20I love Paul Giamatti.
04:22I love Dominic Sessa.
04:23Devine Joy Randolph, like I said.
04:25Incredible script.
04:27The way it was shot was so cool.
04:29I mean, they really intentionally shot it like a 70s movie rather than, like, retrospectively trying to make it look like it was from the past.
04:37So, I mean, that was just an amazing movie.
04:39That's the kind of movie where it's like I wish they gave that a real big marketing budget and a huge release and everybody could enjoy it.
04:47I'm sure everyone, you know, is going to watch it on streaming.
04:49And it obviously did well in theaters.
04:50But, like, that movie was so good.
04:52And finally, in the great Barbenheimer debate, which one do you choose, Barbie or Oppenheimer?
05:00I mean, I guess this is a red flag, but Oppenheimer?
05:03I just, I mean, I love it.
05:07My favorite movies are movies with really, really good acting.
05:09And obviously there's incredible acting in Barbie.
05:11But Oppenheimer is like a pure actor's movie to me.
05:14Like, it's three hours of people talking in rooms.
05:17You know, it's like a play.
05:19And the performances are insane.
05:21And, I mean, the script is so intricate and detailed.
05:26And the actors just absolutely feast on it.
05:29So, that would be my choice.
05:31When I saw Oppenheimer in theaters, someone got, like, critically injured at the screening.
05:37So, I had kind of a weird experience with that movie.
05:40I was at the Chinese theater watching it in that, like, 70mm IMAX.
05:44I, like, got a ticket because I was lucky.
05:45And, literally, they pulled the lights up because someone was running back to their seat from the bathroom.
05:50And they wiped out and had to be, like, carted out.
05:53I hope she's okay.
05:55That affected my viewing a little bit.
05:57But I still loved Oppenheimer.
05:59So.
06:00On that note, thanks for talking to me.
06:02It was so great to finally meet you in person.
06:04Oh, my God.
06:05So great.
06:05Thank you so much.
