Dallas James Liu dishes to THR about 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' getting renewed for season 2 and 3 while on the carpet at the THR X TikTok Awards Weekend Party.
00:00Now that Avatar The Last Airbender is out on Netflix, what has the fan response been like for you?
00:06I'd say it's definitely been a mixed bag, but I think for those that have been able to appreciate it for what it is,
00:12they've been enjoying it for the most part.
00:14We got a lot of good nods to the original animation while being able to expand on scenes that we might not have been able to see in the animated series.
00:22So I think it's been pretty good so far, considering also that there's been a season 2 and season 3 renewal.
00:28Yes, how did you react to that news of the renewal? It just came out the other day.
00:33So Daniel, dig him, who plays Ozai, he played a prank on us saying that they wouldn't announce season 2, but they were going to announce 2 and 3.
00:42So it was a big moment because as soon as the show had come out, there was a big weight off of our chest,
00:48but we still, in the back of our minds, were thinking about what's to come next after this,
00:52just because season 2 and 3 haven't been adapted yet.
00:56So we're just more than excited and more than grateful that we get to bring that to life.
01:02We're here toasting Oscar nominees tonight.
01:05When it comes to Best Picture, which movie are you rooting for?
01:08Oh, man.
01:13I feel like, I mean, I really liked Oppenheimer.
01:16I did, I did.
01:17I thought Robert Downey Jr. was phenomenal in that, so I'm hoping he wins.
01:22So in the Barbie vs. Oppenheimer debate, do you choose Oppenheimer?
01:26I'm not taking sides, I'm not taking sides.
01:29And what do you have coming up this year that you're excited about, or is it just getting back to filming Avatar now that you've gotten the renewal?
01:35Yeah, I mean, I'm definitely going to get back to doing my homework, watching the animated series, doing some character work,
01:40but I'm excited more than anything just to have some hair in the future seasons.
01:46What sort of prep did you do before taking on the role for season 1?
01:50Just a lot of research, a lot of character work, journaling, a lot of the basic things,
01:55but I think the biggest part was just knowing that it was my responsibility.
01:59I think, like, being a lead in a series is a lot different than, you know, all of my past works.
02:06So knowing that there was a big fandom, you know, not only supporting, but also probably going to critique me,
02:11I made sure that I knew every single thing about Zuko and that I would find a way to make him my own.
