00:00A lot of it is aspirational.
00:02A lot of the times I feel like there's something I can say through someone else that I can't really say in my own life.
00:08Like I remember thinking like I could only, when I was a kid doing theater, I was like, oh, this is where I'm telling the truth.
00:13It's like between like the curtain up and down.
00:17So yeah, I feel like I learn, it feels like I can be, there's certain things I, I'm sure you guys feel the same way that I can like touch that I, maybe I'm not ready to in my own life or that it looks fun to try.
00:29The Hollywood Reporter's Comedy Actress Roundtable is about to drop and we're giving you a special preview.
00:36The episode marks the latest installment in our signature roundtable series, Off Script with the Hollywood Reporter.
00:42This time around, the stars sitting down at our iconic table are Kristen Bell, Hannah Einbinder, Catherine Hahn, Natasha Lyonne, Jessica Williams and Michelle Williams.
00:53Earlier on in my career, like, I don't know, probably like 15 years ago when I felt like I wasn't booking the things I wanted to book and, but I, I'm going to also bleed that into the things people wanted me to book.
01:04Sure.
01:04And it was like, oh, lost another role.
01:06Okay.
01:07No, it's Michelle Williams again.
01:08That's, okay, great.
01:09No, it's Michelle.
01:09Okay, it's going to be Michelle.
01:10It's going to be Emily.
01:11This, great.
01:12Perfect.
01:12Love it.
01:13I love those girls.
01:13So happy.
01:14And my, and my husband was sitting in bed with me.
01:16He's like, you know what?
01:17Stop trying to drive in other people's lanes.
01:20You're not going to be Michelle Williams ever, but you have a lane on the highway and you can speed in it.
01:28So just do what you do.
01:30During the hour long sit down moderated by THR's Lacey Rose, the six actresses spoke about everything from their comedy inspirations.
01:38Growing up, it's like, I feel like I took pieces of people.
01:40There's like really amazing black female comic actors, like Queen Latifah was amazing.
01:46Whoopi Goldberg, Maya Rudolph.
01:47Jumping Jack Flash.
01:49Like, are you kidding me?
01:50Like, are you, like, I mean, just these legends, but I, but it still wasn't quite right.
01:54So I had to take, like, I take all those pieces of these people.
01:58And I even take, like, like Tracy Morgan.
02:01Like, I take, like, so Tina Fey, like all of it.
02:04And I just hear whatever's funny.
02:06It just sticks in my head and did as a kid.
02:08To the importance of having a strong support system.
02:10And if you're in a partnership and you have children, like, you need their full and unwavering support to be able to go and do these things.
02:18And to say, yeah, this is something that we're working on as a family.
02:22Because I think when you, when you do something, when you, like, take time away from your family,
02:25the other people in your family need to sort of step up and, like, fill your shoes a little bit.
02:29And so they have to, like, believe in what you're doing.
02:31And even why it's time to let go of dated narratives surrounding women in entertainment.
02:35It's miraculous that you move from this kind of false narrative that I think is set up by advertising throughout industry for this young woman,
02:43this 11-year-old, whoever it is, that for some reason women are supposed to be against each other.
02:47It's just empirically not true.
02:49What we really want to start doing is making it more of a team sport and letting go of, you know,
02:55so long as one of us is winning, that means we're all winning.
02:57Because I need you guys in jobs, like, in order for them to be understanding that this is the new aesthetic.
03:05Offscript with The Hollywood Reporter is known for bringing the entertainment industry's top creatives together
03:09for surprising and inspiring conversations.
03:12What Hacks has been able to do for bisexual representation is give, like, a vivid inner life and a reality to this character.
03:20Obviously, we know that when people write to their own experience, something is just far more lived in.
03:25And as a queer actor myself playing a queer character, I can, you know, add my zest.
