00:00Do not encourage people to print out lists because the next list that comes out
00:04your name will be on and then people will be coming after you.
00:07Whoopi Goldberg is calling out Debra Messing for demanding a list of names of
00:11those attending Donald Trump's Beverly Hills fundraiser. It all started when The
00:15Hollywood Reporter provided details in an August 29th story of a big-ticket
00:19fundraiser President Trump was holding on September 17th in Beverly Hills as part
00:23of his reelection campaign. The news boiled over into the holiday weekend
00:26stirring up a heated Twitter exchange between Trump and Debra Messing.
00:30The actress called on THR to print a list of all attendees please adding,
00:34the public has a right to know. Her longtime co-star Eric McCormick even chimes in with a
00:38similar thought tweeting,
00:40Trump was quick to respond with a jab at the actress writing,
00:49I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do The Apprentice
00:52and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC's failed lineup greatly,
00:56Debra Messing came up to me at an upfront and profusely thanked me, even calling me
01:00sir. How times have changed. Then on Tuesday the situation spilled over onto ABC's The View,
01:06where host Whoopi Goldberg weighed in on the whole affair, taking aim at Messing and
01:10McCormick for making such a request in the first place.
01:13The last time people did this, people ended up killing themselves. We had something called the
01:20blacklist and a lot of really good people were accused of stuff. Nobody cared whether it was
01:26true or not. They were accused. Goldberg was of course referencing the infamous Hollywood blacklist,
01:33which was an entertainment industry blacklist put into effect during the early part of the cold war
01:38by Hollywood studios that inhibited certain individuals in the industry from gaining
01:42employment because of alleged communist ties. The host continued saying,
01:46In this country, people can vote for who they want to. That is one of the great rights of this
01:50country. You don't have to like it, but we don't go after people because we don't like who
01:54they voted for. We can talk about issues and stuff, but we don't print out lists.
01:58View co-host Joy Behar agreed that individual names should not be exposed, but the same shouldn't
02:03be said for corporations, saying,
02:05I do believe that you should know if a company gave a lot of money to Trump. When it's individuals,
02:09it's stalking and you're starting to endanger that person's life.
02:12McCormick took to Instagram on Tuesday to clarify his original statement, saying,
02:16I absolutely do not support blacklist or discrimination of any kind. I'd simply like to
02:21understand where Trump's major donations are coming from, which is a matter of public record.
02:25I'm holding myself responsible for making educated and informed decisions that I can morally
02:29and ethically stand by. And to do that, transparency is essential.
02:33Messing also responded to the whole ordeal, screenshotting a picture of McCormick's statement,
02:37writing, I couldn't have said it better. For more on this story, head to THR.com.
02:42And until next time, for The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Meha Joy.
