The acclaimed actress raved about 'A Star Is Born' and other awards hopefuls when she joined Stephen Colbert for the 'Late Show' host's annual Montclair Film fundraiser.
Transcript
00:00Academy Award winner Meryl Streep sat down with Stephen Colbert earlier this month for
00:04his annual onstage conversation to raise money for Montclair Film, where they discussed,
00:08among other things, President Donald Trump. After Streep criticized Trump during her
00:12Cecil B. DeMille acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globes for seemingly mocking a
00:17disabled reporter, Trump retorted via Twitter that he thought Streep was one of the most
00:21overrated actresses in Hollywood. When asked by Colbert how she felt about having a
00:25president who is indifferent to empathy, Streep replied with a sobering answer,
00:29I'm scared. I'm scared by him, by his possibility, she said, and I do empathize with him. I can't
00:34imagine what his 3 a.m. is like. There's a gathering storm. Everyone feels it. He feels it.
00:39His children are in jeopardy and I feel that. I think, what if my children were in jeopardy? I
00:43would do anything, anything to get them out of trouble. So we should be afraid. That's what I
00:47think. The conversation also had plenty of moments of levity as the award-winning actress teased her
00:52role in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, and shared some of her favorite recent movie
00:56releases, such as A Star is Born. Streep enthused that nobody but Lady Gaga could have
01:01played Ali in Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, and also raved about the actor's
01:05approach to helming a feature film.
01:06It's so breezily shot and it's so self-assured, she said. It's not actually shot. Some actors who
01:12make the transition to directing, they give the actors too much air. They don't cut as
01:16brutally as you need in order to move the story. To them, the character is more
01:19interesting than the forward movement of the story, the narrative. The movie is the
01:23thing. You're helping, but the movie has to keep going. And Bradley? He gave himself the
01:27stuff he needed, and then he'd move off. Kept it moving. Streep also took the
01:31opportunity to plug her own work, recommending that the audience goes to see
01:35the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, in which she plays Poppins' cousin.
01:38I'm very screwed up, a very screwed up character, Streep said of her role as Topsy.
01:42But she's very tolerant of me, and she needs something from me, so of course she's nice to me.
01:47It's fun. The movie is just great. I don't say this about all my movies, but this is not my
01:52movie. This is Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. This movie is so great. These
01:55children are beautiful. It's like a tiny little gift to America at Christmas.
