"Being the guy nobody believes in for a bit and getting some opportunities to work with people you've really admired, it's a dream come true," Powell told The Hollywood Reporter.
00:00I'm Oliver Trevina, in studio for The Hollywood Reporter, joined by the handsome Glenn Powell.
00:09God, we're starting out on that note.
00:10I was dreading this. Look at you.
00:11Look at you.
00:12You stud.
00:13You stud.
00:14I can't control it.
00:15My goodness.
00:16But I'm going to, because we have to focus. This is work.
00:17This is work.
00:18Everyone's like, what's going on?
00:19Known each other for a while.
00:20Known each other for a while.
00:21Yeah.
00:22Dashing, like the shirt?
00:25Did you just get that?
00:26What?
00:27Did you just get that?
00:28I did just get that.
00:29I'm trying to blend in.
00:30You do.
00:31I'm just going to do one of these.
00:32I like it.
00:33That's happened.
00:34Let's turn the heat up in here.
00:35Set it up.
00:36Yeah.
00:37Do it up.
00:38Do the shirt up, and then we'll talk about setting it up.
00:39Okay, okay.
00:40Yeah.
00:41I'm sorry.
00:42Nice little rom-com.
00:43It's awesome.
00:44It's exciting.
00:45Yeah, it's really good.
00:46And you and Zoe don't get along at all, I can tell.
00:48No.
00:49No, Zoe and I, we worked together on Everybody Wants Some, and just had a freaking blast on
00:53that.
00:54When this thing came around, she's the no-brainer, best choice for this thing.
00:58We just had a blast making this movie, and yeah, I think the chemistry's there.
01:02100% there.
01:03Yeah.
01:04100%.
01:05Even just watching you guys on the little social media promo stuff and that, it's amazing.
01:08It's epic.
01:09Well, she's also a total nerd and geek.
01:11That girl doesn't take herself seriously at all.
01:13Not at all.
01:14For good reason.
01:15There's nothing to take seriously.
01:16So going back then, was she attached first?
01:17Were you attached first?
01:18How did that work?
01:19I was originally doing the movie with Emilia Clarke.
01:20Okay.
01:21Got ya.
01:22And then Emilia popped off to do Han Solo.
01:24She did.
01:25She did.
01:26I'm kidding.
01:27He even plugs other people's movies while he's here.
01:28Actually, Han Solo's great.
01:29And Emilia's adorable.
01:30But when Emilia popped off, then we just read some folks.
01:33But when Zoe came in, we'd obviously...
01:35Right.
01:36Went together before.
01:37Yeah.
01:38And it was just, she was the no-brainer and she just crushes it.
01:41Right.
01:42And you guys go off on this plan to make a set up.
01:43Yeah.
01:44It's like two assistants.
01:45They're overworked and just downtrodden.
01:46And they come up with this plan.
01:47They set up their bosses.
01:48So while they're hooking up, they have a personal life.
01:49Right.
01:50So they do it.
01:51It's like Parent Trap.
01:52Right.
01:53There you go.
01:54You strike me as someone who's good at setting people up as well.
01:55That is not true.
01:56I was being sarcastic.
01:57Nothing.
01:58I've had nothing from Glenn.
01:59No, no, no, no.
02:00You just let me know.
02:01Perfect.
02:02Yeah.
02:03I don't know.
02:04I don't know.
02:05I don't know.
02:06I don't know.
02:07I don't know.
02:08I don't know.
02:11I'm not a, you know, there are apps for this.
02:13There's algorithms and things like that, you know.
02:15After this, okay.
02:16Just rely on technology.
02:17We'll have a chat after.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Perfect.
02:20Perfect.
02:21And you do work with some lovely ladies.
02:22What?
02:23Lily James, you've just worked with as well.
02:24I love Lily.
02:25It's amazing as well.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Lily and I had a...
02:28You get a good bunch.
02:29No.
02:30This job has really turned out in terms of that.
02:31It's been great.
02:32Yeah.
02:33Lily James is like super talented and so fun.
02:34And she's part of the family.
02:36My parents absolutely adore her.
02:39And, you know, my parents were around on the whole press tour as well.
02:41They came out and shot on Guernsey and the Literary Potato Peel Pie Society.
02:45I'm glad you said it.
02:46I was going in my head.
02:47Should I say it?
02:48It's a nightmare of a title.
02:49You said it.
02:50You said it.
02:51The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society.
02:53Well, it sounds good in your accent.
02:55Okay.
02:56Perfect.
02:57It's better.
02:58Thanks.
02:59It's, you know, and also like people in, you know, England love that book.
03:01Right.
03:02But in America, not many people know it.
03:03It's amazing.
03:04Right, right.
03:05But it's, yeah.
03:06It's a great movie.
03:07It's a great movie too.
03:08Very different.
03:09Still a love story.
03:10Yeah, still a love story.
03:11Well, you love your love stories.
03:12I do.
03:13Even in real life, you love your love stories.
03:14Well, I look like a guy who's carved from stone and steel, but I actually do have a heart.
03:19That's true.
03:20And I'm kidding about the stone and steel part.
03:21That's your Instagram bio, right?
03:23What?
03:24That's your Instagram bio.
03:25Stone and steel?
03:26I look like a guy that's carved from stone and steel.
03:28Yeah.
03:29Yeah.
03:30Okay.
03:31Where are we going with this?
03:32I have no idea.
03:33It's been a big few years.
03:34Yeah.
03:35I mean, we've spoken about this before, but it's incredible.
03:37Yeah, it's been a fun ride.
03:38It's just gone like that.
03:39Yeah.
03:40Do you like that?
03:41Oh, there it is.
03:42There's nothing there.
03:43No.
03:44Yeah, you can carry on looking out.
03:45There's nothing there.
03:46No, it's been really good.
03:47You have been out in this town for a long time, and you know it's a hard trudge.
03:52Being the guy that nobody believes in for a bit, and all of a sudden getting some opportunities
03:57and work with people that you've always admired, it's a dream come true.
04:00I love it.
04:01And now you just go in and go in and go in.
04:02Now I'm calling it quits before it gets back.
04:04Yeah.
04:05This is my retirement.
04:06This is Tim's last interview.
04:07He is finishing after this project.
04:08Done.
04:09He's finishing.
04:10He's finishing.
04:11How have things changed in the way of, apart from you don't have to sneak into parties anymore?
04:15I still have to do that.
04:16I don't know why.
04:17You still have to?
04:18Obviously, my publicist is not doing his job.
04:19I can't get anywhere.
04:20Okay, okay.
04:21Well, that shouldn't be the case.
04:22But yeah, things are great.
04:23What's been the best highlight?
04:24I think the best highlight is all the people that I've known for a while out here, I'm
04:30getting to develop stuff.
04:32We're getting to work with Ron Howard, for example.
04:34I'm working with Ron Howard on something.
04:36I did a project on him when I was in third grade, and I've always been a fan of movies,
04:43breaking down his style, and now I get to be in a room and talk shop with him.
04:48The fact that I get to work with your heroes, I'm getting to work with Channing Tatum on
04:51something right now, that's awesome.
04:52I've been a fan of his.
04:53I guess that.
04:54Getting to work with your heroes is the dream of this business, and now that's happening.
04:58It's great.
04:59Which you really are capitalizing.
05:01Things are going in the right direction, and now that's why you're producing.
05:04Every time we talk, I feel like you're doing something else.
05:06Yeah, yeah.
05:07Let's talk about some of the stuff in production.
05:09We're writing the Captain Planet movie right now.
05:11Which I got extremely excited about when I heard.
05:13It's sick.
05:14I think I even started singing the theme tune, which I'm not going to do now.
05:17You can.
05:18I'm not going to do it.
05:19You could do it.
05:20Captain Planet, he's a hero, gonna take pollution down to zero.
05:24I didn't realize it was so big here, because it was so big in the UK as well.
05:28Huge.
05:29It's like a worldwide hit.
05:30It's actually kind of crazy.
05:31They didn't make it into a superhero movie before, but they kind of did an earnest take, and ours is way more subversive and fun and dark and irreverent.
05:38Right.
05:39So what's that process?
05:40It's a process.
05:41Going into a project that big that someone's tried to do it before.
05:44How are you now doing it?
05:46That could have been easy.
05:48Sometimes you just have to think through these things logically.
05:51If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can't do an earnest take on that.
05:57You have to go at it from a fun take.
05:59Right.
06:00Just the way Deadpool has kind of circumnavigated the superhero thing.
06:04A guy who wants to die, you have to figure out the funny attribute.
06:08That's a funny attribute.
06:09A guy who is suicidal.
06:10So what does that guy talk like?
06:11Okay.
06:12It just makes sense.
06:13It has been an interesting process, and it's taken a long time, but now we're getting that up and going, and we're really stoked about it.
06:19So we're doing that with Leo.
06:20Nice.
06:21Yeah.
06:22Are you really?
06:23Yeah.
06:24Oh, incredible.
06:25This man is a machine right now.
06:27He's a machine.
06:28That's going to be awesome, because he is real life Captain Planet.
06:31Right, right, right.
06:32I love that.
06:33Yeah.
06:34Amazing.
06:35Boom, boom.
06:36Just touching base again, because the last few projects, as we mentioned, you've been surrounded by some lovely ladies.
06:39If I said your next project, you could have any lady on screen with yourself.
06:42Oh my goodness.
06:43First one that comes to mind.
06:44Cindy Powell.
06:45My mother.
06:46I love that.
06:47She's starring.
06:48Your mom's here.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Every time.
06:51Every time.
06:52It's really kind of getting sad now, because every time I get something, I call my parents, I'm really excited, and then they ask, like, what's my role in the movie?
06:58I'm like, Mom, can you just be excited for me?
07:00Right, right.
07:01For once.
07:02No.
07:03It's good.
07:04The answer's, they're just waiting on their roles now.
07:05They've got to keep you down to earth.
07:06My grandmother is in Set It Up, and she is coming to the premiere, and she is-
07:11This is true.
07:12This is true.
07:13Okay, okay.
07:14Grammy has never been to a premiere before, and she is coming to the Set It Up premiere from Agunquip, Maine, to New York City, and they're covering the whole thing.
07:21It's going to be a big to-do.
07:22This is amazing.
07:23Yeah, it's going to be great.
07:24This is brilliant.
07:25I'm really excited.
07:26Okay, okay.
07:27Watch out for, what's Grandma's name?
07:28Grammy?
07:29Grammy Powell?
07:30She wasn't born Grammy.
07:31If she was born Grammy Powell, that'd be a weird.
07:32Well, I mean, but what's she titled in the movie?
07:34You don't know.
07:35It might be, she might go by that.
07:37I mean, her name's Lillian.
07:38Okay.
07:39We'll call her, you know, Wild Lil.
07:41Okay.
07:42Has she picked out her outfit?
07:43Has she picked out?
07:44No.
07:45Actually, I think I want to film all that.
07:46I want to, like, get her styled and the whole thing.
07:48I think a jumpsuit could be good.
07:49They're very in fashion right now.
07:50Like, what kind of jumpsuit?
07:52I mean, I'll do all black, all black jumpsuit.
07:55Yeah.
07:56Should I do a hat?
07:57No, no, don't do a hat.
07:58What's her hair like?
07:59What's her hair like?
08:00Yeah.
08:01It's gray.
08:02I mean, she's like 85.
08:03It's gray.
08:04Yeah, you're right.
08:05Perfect.
08:06It's in.
08:07Perfect.
08:08We're done.
08:09People that haven't gone gray are dyeing their hair like white now.
08:10Yeah.
08:11It's very in.
08:12Very in.
08:13Let's pretend that she dyed it.
08:14It wasn't that way.
08:15I'm glad you said dyed it.
08:16Yeah.
08:17I was like, jeez, man.
08:18I wouldn't do that, Glenn, would I?
08:19I wouldn't do that.
08:20We're going to do the THR's top five right now.
08:22Alright, what's that?
08:23Movie you watched as a kid that you wish you were in?
08:25Indiana Jones.
08:26That's a good one.
08:27Third one.
08:28Okay.
08:29Okay.
08:30They're playing it this weekend.
08:32Where?
08:33Tomorrow night in Malibu.
08:34Pacific Palisades.
08:35Really?
08:36Yeah.
08:37Outdoors.
08:38Just letting you know.
08:39Alright.
08:40Favorite movie soundtrack?
08:41That's a really good one.
08:42Top Gun.
08:43That's so you as well.
08:44So you.
08:45First moment that comes to mind when I say career highlight.
08:48Career highlight?
08:50Getting to kick down a door and being followed by Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Benderas and
08:56Wesley Snipes.
08:57That was a cool moment for me.
08:58That's a big moment.
08:59That's a nice moment.
09:00I've been thinking about it.
09:01And that wasn't even in a movie?
09:02No.
09:03We actually saved the world.
09:04I don't like to talk about it.
09:05It was a big Saturday night.
09:06It was a big night out.
09:07Honestly, we broke and entered.
09:08We all hit hard times for a bit and we were stealing from a lot of people.
09:11It just shows you.
09:12Look where he is now.
09:13Yeah.
09:14One word to describe your journey as an actor so far.
09:17Grateful.
09:18That's a good one.
09:19Like underdog?
09:20How the heck did it happen?
09:21I don't know.
09:22There's a lot.
09:23There's a lot.
09:24There's a few.
09:25A lot of people are guest starring on shows because the world of TV is forever changing.
09:28Yeah.
09:29If you could guest star on any TV show right now, what would it be?
09:32Any TV show right now.
09:36American Vandal?
09:38I really loved the first season of that.
09:40Okay.
09:41I mean that could happen.
09:42Yeah.
09:43Easily.
09:44Yeah.
09:45Bring me in as like a dick drawer.
09:46I don't know.
09:47A guest dick drawer.
09:48Glenn Powell.
09:49There's no better way to wrap this interview up on that note.
