00:00Hello and welcome to Offsiders, I'm Abbey Jelmy.
00:24The stakes were high in last night's AFLW Grand Final.
00:27For North Melbourne, it was a chance to become the first back-to-back premiers and put an
00:32exclamation mark on an unprecedented winning streak.
00:35For Brisbane, it was a prospect of dual men's and women's flags.
00:39It was a fierce contest early until one team dominated.
00:44Garner gets it, gives it to Sheeran, play went on a little unexpectedly and Sheeran kicks
00:49her first goal in an AFLW Grand Final.
00:52And Bella Eddy to put the Roos in front.
00:56It was never in doubt.
00:58It comes down the line towards Sheerall.
01:00He's taking a good grab in front of Campbell.
01:02That's a hugely important mark from Haydall.
01:05Silly from Campbell.
01:07Just a little shove there.
01:09That's dumb.
01:09And she can't stay in that space.
01:11That's going to be 100.
01:11Otherwise, that should be 100 in total.
01:13Sheerall from the goal square gets a cheap one for the Roos.
01:19Campbell, caught by Loughlin, driven firmly into the ground.
01:22Head hit the turf.
01:24Sheeran gets another look.
01:25Sheeran kicks another goal.
01:27She's having a huge impact.
01:29And Hampson's kick is one she would like back, but she's given it to Jazz Garner, who puts
01:34the icing on the cake from directly in front.
01:39A perfect season of domination by the Roos.
01:43They are back-to-back premiers.
01:49It was never going to end any other way, was it?
01:51It's a pleasure to have your company.
01:52For our very last show of the year, I'm joined by Rana Hussain, Bruce Jitte and Jess Stewart.
01:57Now, Rana, you were there last night.
01:59I mean, a 27-match winning streak for North.
02:02Of course they were going to finish it off.
02:04Oh, it's the ending that we all knew was coming, yet it was still somehow very exciting.
02:09And there is absolutely no doubt what this meant to the North Melbourne side, because
02:13their celebrations were just late.
02:16Like, the excitement was palpable from the team.
02:19And you could imagine there might be some complacency, but absolutely not.
02:23It was incredible.
02:24And, Bruce, we do mention that winning streak.
02:25But that comes with a bit of pressure, too, that you've got to get it done on the big stage.
02:29Absolutely.
02:29Every game you win, the longer the streak goes, naturally it means it's closer to coming to an end.
02:35And, you know, you wake up on the day of a grand final game and you just really hope that
02:41we've done everything perfect till this point.
02:43We'd better not drop the ball at the finish line.
02:46And, you know, North Melbourne were just far too good.
02:49And, Jess, as our resident Queenslander, we know that the Lions can play that chaotic
02:53brand of footy.
02:54You would have thought early maybe there was a chance.
02:57Yeah, I was pretty shocked early on just how much they were considered outsiders for
03:00the game, because they were coming into this match, too, also on a pretty long winning streak.
03:04And, yeah, I thought personally if they were there within maybe a goal late towards the
03:09game, Brisbane are a pretty fit and strong team.
03:11They were going to run it out.
03:12But it was like that early.
03:14We got that taste of the match early and then it just broke open after that from North.
03:18But, yeah, they're too strong, too impressive.
03:21And what a story for the AFLW competition in the AFL.
03:25And it really has been just their year, their season.
03:27They're now two seasons.
03:29Are they two dominant runners?
03:31Is there such a thing?
03:32Look, I was one of those people that was kind of annoyed that they were so good at the
03:37beginning of the season, because it felt like the story had already been written.
03:40But as we continue to watch them do their thing, you realise this is the new era of the
03:46AFLW and what they've done is kicked the door open for that next evolution now.
03:51And so, like Emma Carney said, now we just wait for all the other teams to lift and get
03:56on their level.
03:57And that's exciting for the competition.
03:59And we see that every time you play North Melbourne, you really are pushed to actually
04:04find that second gear, that next level, as they say.
04:07And they're just leading the way.
04:09I agree with you.
04:10It is great that we can see the standard that AFLW can get to and the professionalism that
04:14these girls bring to the table.
04:15But this is what they call a coach killer, because the game was in the balance in the
04:19second quarter, and we already saw it in the opening pack.
04:21Shannon Campbell had what can only be described as a brain fade.
04:25Jess, she gave away 100 metres here.
04:27Now, this is what you don't expect when you've got to the decider.
04:30You just can't be doing that.
04:31It's just such bad discipline.
04:34Obviously, this didn't lose them the match, but it was such a critical juncture of the
04:39game.
04:39And 100 metres, it's a coach killer.
04:42You could see Craig Starcevic in the box, and you'd expect better from someone that...
04:46Shannon Campbell, she was playing in her seventh grand final for the Lions, and she is one
04:50of the experienced heads, but she's certainly an excellent player, and there's a lot of
04:54the reason that they're in the grand final, like her skills and her expertise as well.
04:58So she probably would like to have that moment back.
05:01But Brisbane had four 50-metre penalties in that game last night.
05:04You can't do that in a grand final.
05:05That's going to cost you...
05:07You can't...
05:07Everything needed to go right for them to beat North.
05:09They had to do everything right, and those things aren't going to help in any way.
05:13And yeah, I just shook my head at it.
05:17And up until that point, they were right in the game.
05:20And, you know, grand finals, anything can happen in a finals game, they're made up of
05:25moments.
05:26And in crucial moments, you need to make the right decisions.
05:30And that's one crucial moment, like you said.
05:32That's not why they lost the game, but it was a crucial moment that did really turn the
05:36game against them.
05:37They're made up of moments.
05:38It's also when you can put your name up in lights.
05:40And Isla Sheeran put the finishing touch on an exceptional first season at North, claiming
05:44the best on-ground medal with a maximum 12 motes.
05:48It was unanimous, Rana, and for good reason.
05:50She had two goals and just every disposal, contested disposal, particularly, she was amazing.
05:55Yeah, every time you needed North to fight, to turn up, to land that impact, it was Isla
06:01Sheeran that did.
06:03Ash Riddell, you know, got 38 disposals, broke a record of an AFRW grand final.
06:09But it was Sheeran that actually could turn the game, take those moments, and really
06:13have that impact.
06:14And she got the crowd right on her side.
06:15And one of the biggest talking points was actually the venue itself.
06:18The Decider was sold out for a third straight year, with a crowd of just over 12,000 at
06:23Carlton's Princess Park.
06:26But for many, they're just crying out for the AFL to make the move to a bigger venue.
06:29We've seen this from commentators.
06:31We've seen this from fans.
06:32Do we see this potentially next season, Jess?
06:35Yeah, I'd hope so.
06:36Like, three straight sellouts now we've had in a grand final.
06:40I think at some point, you've got to give the fans the opportunity to show up and prove
06:44to the AFL that the appetite's there for perhaps a, you know, large showing in the grand final.
06:50Which we saw in the first women's grand final at Adelaide Oval, with 53-odd thousand.
06:54And it's hard with capacity, too.
06:56Like, if Brisbane had hosted that grand final yesterday, if North had stumbled last week,
06:59then the capacity is going to be much smaller.
07:01It's played at Springfield, which is, you know, 7,000, 8,000 at Chocoblock.
07:05And that's kind of not what you want from a grand final perspective, but that's how the
07:09competition goes.
07:09But I think if you've got the opportunity here in Melbourne to play at Docklands, why aren't
07:14you taking that opportunity and letting the men show up?
07:16Crowds are one of the topics or one of the issues that the AFL would hope would improve
07:20with the women's next season.
07:22Yeah, and their strategy around that is to build consistency, to build the rituals within
07:26the fixture.
07:27They've talked about it all season, but it's bizarre then that they maintain this kind of
07:31roving grand final where if you had a grand final at Marvel year on, year out, you know
07:36that you could build around it.
07:37You could build that momentum and get the kind of 50,000 crowds that we have seen in the
07:41past.
07:42It is a strange strategy, but they've gone with that again because we're getting the
07:47exact same season next year.
07:49So, I mean, they're going for consistency.
07:52Who knows if it'll work?
07:53And I can't believe we're still asking this question.
07:55Is the season in the right spot, guys?
07:57Because I feel like it's year on year.
07:59We still ask about whether or not the AFL have got it right.
08:02And we know with the NRL that they run the women's competition parallel.
08:05And it seems to work.
08:07I think it works in the NRLW.
08:08I think this is the one, there's so much talk about the code wars and who does better
08:12things in each code.
08:14I think this is where the NRL has the win over the AFL and the AFLW and the NRLW.
08:18I think it works really well there.
08:20They obviously, I don't like how they have the same grand final day.
08:22However, I think the women deserve their own clear air, which I think the AFL does excellently.
08:27But I just don't think this, this is where the competition needs to sit.
08:30I would like it to perhaps be earlier in the year.
08:33It's too late now.
08:34This is where it's locked in.
08:35So we can't do anything, but if they took that, what they've added the wild card round
08:39next year, I would have liked to see maybe the grand final fall in that weekend, but
08:42obviously that's changed.
08:44And again, we can't look backwards.
08:45We've got to look forward and know that this is where it's locked in.
08:49Yeah, it's bizarre because at the, on the one hand, when we have the clear, clear air,
08:53we know ratings drop, drop off.
08:55People are fatigued by football.
08:56I know I've switched gears a little bit into cricket mode, but then when we're in the
09:02men's season as well, when it overlaps, then you have a logistical nightmare about where
09:06do games get played, double headers.
09:09The game is so long in and of itself.
09:11How do you actually make that work for fans in particular?
09:14So it's a kind of a catch 22 and they've clearly gone with the halfway point where you
09:20get a little bit of overlap and a little bit of clear air.
09:22One thing we do know is we'll talk about it again next year, won't we?
09:24So we'll see what happens there.
09:26But moving on to Formula One and for the first time in 91 days, Aussie Oscar Piastri has
09:32topped the podium, dominating the Qatar Grand Prix sprint to shave two valuable points off
09:37Lando Norris' championship lead.
09:39The Aussie will start from pole in the race proper starting at 3am Eastern tomorrow, trailing
09:43teammate Norris by 22 points, who will start from second.
09:47So it's a one-two for McLaren at the start of the grid.
09:50Now this is dynamite TV.
09:53This is unbelievable, Rana, that it's come down to this and the real question Aussies
09:57want to know after he had such what looked like an unassailable lead earlier in the season.
10:02Can he do it?
10:03I know.
10:03I'm so thrilled for him.
10:05I'm actually jumping out of my skin.
10:06He's made a comeback.
10:08I think he can do it.
10:09It's going to be tough.
10:10Lando Norris is coming for him.
10:12He's said, I don't see why I wouldn't try and win this thing.
10:15And it feels like, and we actually know that McLaren want Lando Norris to win.
10:21They've asked Piastri to kind of take a bit of a sidestep so that Lando Norris can take
10:25pole position.
10:26Which is phenomenal when you break that down, that you've got your boss saying, do you mind
10:29just stepping to the side?
10:31I know that you've wanted to do it, but...
10:32But like every good Aussie, Piastri said, absolutely not.
10:35I'm going to drive my heart out.
10:37And he had the best race of his life, he reckons.
10:40So I think he can do it.
10:42It's coming from behind, though, and we'll say it's going to be huge at 3am.
10:46If he can do it, it's arguably the sporting story of the year.
10:49And we're going to talk about some big sporting stories later in the program as well.
10:52But we're moving on to football.
10:54And the Matildas thumped New Zealand 5-0 in front of a packed house at Gosford on Friday
10:59night.
10:59And it was a fan favourite in Cairo Cooney Cross, who delivered one of the goals of the year.
11:04Bruce, it was phenomenal.
11:05It was a phenomenal performance by the Matildas.
11:08No Mary Fowler, no Sam Kerr.
11:10No worries.
11:11No worries.
11:12Absolutely.
11:13No worries for the Matildas.
11:14And it's great to see Joe Montemuro, the head coach, really establishing his soul of play
11:20on this team now.
11:21You saw that last night.
11:22They're comfortable in possession.
11:24The passes through the lines and goals like this.
11:28You know, they had five different scorers in this match.
11:32And Cairo Cooney Cross has finished there.
11:36Absolutely world class.
11:37She's having a great season at Arsenal.
11:38And she's bringing it to the national team.
11:40Now, the Asian Cup is in March, which feels like it's a sneeze away with how quickly this
11:43time of year moves.
11:44How are we placed?
11:45How are you seeing it?
11:46Look, I think the Matildas were disappointed with the result in the UK against England,
11:51their last time out.
11:53They've turned that around really quickly.
11:55And they're building some really good momentum.
11:57Obviously, that competition is here on home soil.
12:01Huge expectations on the back of what they did at the Women's World Cup.
12:05And we know everyone has merch because it was sold out.
12:07So make sure you get your Matildas kit out because we are ready to have it on home soil.
12:11Get your Matildas merch if you can.
12:13Amy Sayo, one of the players there, she's having a great season in Europe.
12:19In her press conference, she was really confident with the Asian Cup coming up.
12:24Great culture in the team now.
12:26You don't want to put too much pressure on the girls.
12:29But, you know, they could win it.
12:32They could well win the Asian Cup.
12:33That's what we wanted to hear.
12:34That's exactly what I wanted from you.
12:36Thank you, Bruce.
12:36But we will move on because in the A-League, Western Sydney have won their first Sydney
12:41derby in two years, beating Sydney FC 1-0.
12:44And, Bruce, if you're going to score your first club goal, this is a good time to do it,
12:47isn't it?
12:47Yeah, phenomenal goal.
12:49And it was a great advertisement for the A-League as well.
12:52It had all the intensity you'd expect in a derby.
12:55It was action-packed.
12:57You know, both teams are hitting the woodwork and a 1-0 win.
13:02Wanderers really needed that win.
13:04There was a bit of pressure on their coach, Alan Stadjic.
13:07That'll come off a little bit now.
13:08And they've beaten Sydney FC.
13:10Not only that it's a derby, but Sydney are top of the table as well.
13:13So a huge confidence boost for the Wanderers.
13:15And as you mentioned, just a perfect showpiece for the A-League, which is what the league
13:18needs at the moment.
13:19But we will be moving on to cricket.
13:21And our heads are still spinning from that two-day test in Perth.
13:24But now the question that's going to dominate the next few days in the lead-up to the second
13:28Ashes in Brisbane.
13:29Simple as this.
13:30Usman or Travis?
13:31Rana, over to you.
13:32It's a simple question, isn't it?
13:33Oh, yeah.
13:34Simple.
13:34You can make the case for both, right?
13:36I don't...
13:37What I don't want is for Uzi to be dropped.
13:40And we never hear from him again.
13:42And that's the end of his career.
13:44He absolutely does not deserve that.
13:45I don't think he's deserved the pile-on that has happened, that surrounded him.
13:50I would love to see him actually take this test on.
13:53I think we could use his slow pace in a wet, dewy Queensland test.
14:00So I will go with Uzi.
14:01If he's going to make a triumphant return, this is the venue to do it.
14:04Yeah, I agree.
14:05I think...
14:06And it is his home test.
14:07I know he's originally from, you know, New South Wales.
14:09But Brisbane's his home now.
14:11And my view is if the selectors are serious about Travis Head being the opener,
14:16perhaps past this summer, you stick with Trav at the top
14:20and you keep Uzi in the team.
14:22He doesn't deserve to just be dropped.
14:23He has to stay in the team.
14:24He's Usman Quadra.
14:25He's had 85 tests for Australia.
14:27He's excellent.
14:28But that's my view.
14:29And I just...
14:30It's a hard one.
14:30But because this, to me, England will go all out.
14:33They have to win this or it's really pack-up stations, go home.
14:36They'll double down on the basketball and we'll all just wonder...
14:39You know, go back to Noosa.
14:39You know, you may as well go back on a holiday
14:41because it's going to be impossible, I think, from there for England
14:43to recover from this.
14:44So they're going to go all out this week.
14:46The one thing we do know is it's going to be entertaining.
14:48Oh, yeah.
14:48I think as Travis Head said, he's like,
14:50if this was the first two days, the rest of the series is going to be off its head.
14:54So we'll just have to...
14:55We cannot wait to watch that.
14:56But also, as we've mentioned, this is our final show of the year.
14:59So we're going to look back on some of the great sporting moments.
15:02And no Australian sports story matched the highs and lows of Ange Postacoglu.
15:06After claiming the Europa League trophy with Tottenham
15:09and finally bringing silverware back to the club,
15:12he was sacked just 16 days later.
15:14He then stepped into the top job at Nottingham Forest
15:16and that lasted just 39 days.
15:19Bruce, you got whiplash following whether he was up, down and around.
15:22But I think the real question is,
15:23are we going to see Ange at the top flight in the Premier League coaching again?
15:27I think the short answer to that is yes.
15:31I think Ange Postacoglu, he's won everywhere he's gone.
15:35Just ask him.
15:36Forrest.
15:37That was probably, in hindsight, not the right decision for him to take.
15:42He took it so soon after leaving Tottenham.
15:46Nottingham Forest were coming off a great season
15:49and were on a downward slope.
15:51And for Ange to implement his style of play,
15:54it does take a little bit of time.
15:56So yes, I do think we'll see him back in the Premier League.
15:59But, you know, it's fair to say...
16:02Was it a glitch or a damaging one to take that role?
16:04Yeah, I think his reputation's been damaged in England, if you like.
16:09But I think his reputation is still very strong in Europe.
16:12You probably see him go out of the UK to another European top flight league
16:19and get back into the Premier League, if that's what he wants to do.
16:22He might want to go to the La Liga or Serie A in Italy and coach there.
16:27He has the quality to do that.
16:28I think most people sit back and go,
16:3039 days to implement change, seems like he wasn't given much of a chance.
16:34But that might be my Aussie spin, who knows?
16:36But it's easy to forget that Sam Kerr was found not guilty
16:40of racially abusing a police officer in a court case earlier this year.
16:44Now, the footage of her foul-mouthed spray really divided Australians
16:47and the question over her captaincy lingers.
16:50Now, Bruce, you're of the view that she should give back the captaincy voluntarily
16:53when this story was first breaking.
16:55Sam has since come out and said,
16:57no, I'm a leader, it's what I do.
16:59Do you still hold your view or do you think that we'll see her be captain?
17:02Look, my view was always that if you're going to captain,
17:05not even your club, if you're going to captain your country,
17:08you're held to a higher standard.
17:10Yes.
17:10And, you know, I think I said at the time,
17:14if it was me, I'd give the armband back and, you know,
17:18fall on my own sword.
17:19She hasn't done that.
17:21And that's fair enough.
17:23Montemuro is a new coach for the Matildas.
17:27Football Australia have basically given him that responsibility
17:30in terms of who your captain is, is a footballing decision
17:34and we hire you to make footballing decisions
17:36and he's made the decision that Sam should be captain.
17:40It's probably the best football decision,
17:43not being within those four walls,
17:45but you also don't want the unrest in the team
17:47if she was to be stripped of the armband
17:49and all these sorts of things.
17:50So totally understand that decision,
17:54but it's more than just football, I think,
17:56when you're captaining your country.
17:58And it's more than just football when you're Sam Kerr.
18:00Absolutely.
18:01It permeates beyond into the wider sporting conversation.
18:03But, again, we're just going to have to wait
18:05and see how that one plays out.
18:06But one of the biggest sports stories of the year
18:08came when a former footballer uttered just one short sentence.
18:13I played in the AFL for 10 years for the West Coast Eagles
18:16and I'm a bisexual man.
18:19You are the first past or present player to say,
18:24I'm gay or I'm bisexual publicly.
18:28That's a really big thing to say.
18:31Yeah.
18:34It certainly was, and it dominated the landscape, understandably.
18:37Mitch Brown, just bravery.
18:38We talk about bravery in sport, but that was true bravery.
18:41Yeah, it really was, and it's kicked the door open now
18:45for many others, or at least for people to have a conversation
18:48about who they are, who they want to be within the AFL.
18:52And that's something that we've been waiting for for a long time.
18:56I guess the question for me is, do we need people to come out?
19:00That shouldn't be the marker for us.
19:02The question we should be asking is,
19:04how do we make sure the AFL is a safe place
19:06where people feel like they belong?
19:08And I think Mitch Brown coming out has helped that conversation.
19:11So it is absolutely a huge gain for the competition.
19:15But what does the AFL do next?
19:17How do they bolster that message now?
19:19I think all eyes are on them.
19:21And all eyes have also been on 17-year-old sprinting sensation,
19:24Gout Gout, who just brought so much joy to us this year.
19:26Because it was last year that he broke Peter Norman's 200-metre record
19:30that had stood for the better part of half a century.
19:33But it's watching this school kid from Brisbane
19:36just light up the screens and our back pages
19:38that has brought us so much joy, Jess.
19:39And there's a reason why we're all thinking,
19:41hang on, how old is he in Brisbane?
19:42What could this possibly look like?
19:44Oh, everyone's done the math.
19:46They already know how old he'll be.
19:47He is a sensation.
19:48I actually, funnily enough, saw him earlier this week
19:51out at the Brisbane Lions headquarters at Springfield
19:53doing some training and some work with his coach out there
19:56in their kick room.
19:56So it was nice to see him with that bright smile that he always has.
19:59And he said hello and always so lovely.
20:01Good young man.
20:01And I think that's the first step for an Australian
20:04that we want to get behind in our sporting world.
20:06But his international hype is 100% real.
20:09And the funny thing is he competed for the first time
20:12at a senior meet this year.
20:13And the international talk about him,
20:16us here in Australia probably don't realise,
20:18but all the international media wanted to know about Gau Gau.
20:21They had questions about him.
20:23And I think that's what, it's so exciting.
20:24He's off at the Commonwealth Games next year.
20:26He's committed to that.
20:27He will race for us.
20:28And just strap yourselves in.
20:30We've got six years of this.
20:31I love that.
20:31We haven't overhyped it.
20:33He's an international star and we're just waiting
20:35to see where he goes.
20:36But I think he is just someone that brings so much joy.
20:39And in 2025, it was a year of Reece Walsh, really, wasn't it?
20:42He became a, or arguably, the superstar of Australian sport
20:46with one of the greatest grand final performances
20:48in living memory.
20:49And he's gone on to star from the Kangaroos on debut as well.
20:52Now, Jess, we know about the toilet water gags
20:55and all the different things that he does.
20:56But in the NRL, they would put billboards of him
20:59everywhere if they could.
21:00Oh, they certainly would.
21:02And it was funny, in the week leading up to the NRL grand final,
21:05they had the open training sessions.
21:07And I remember seeing the iconic images of Beatlemania
21:09and the women, young girls just like this.
21:13And it was like that.
21:14It was Walshmania.
21:15And then, obviously, they had that over in England
21:17with Reece Walsh.
21:18And he just embraced it, too.
21:20He wanted to encourage the fans to get behind this sport
21:24that obviously hasn't been as prominent over there in the UK
21:27as it is here in recent years.
21:29And he is such a superstar.
21:32He has a few kind of weird tactics as to how he wants
21:35to kind of get involved with, you know,
21:38his younger fans through things like social media and TikTok.
21:40Yeah, we do remember the time the Broncos had to bring out
21:42a press release telling fans not to drink toilet water.
21:45And that legitimately happened.
21:47I know.
21:47And the funny thing is, you know, Michael Maguire drinking,
21:50you know, celebratory champagne out of a toilet bowl mug.
21:53A mini toilet.
21:54Yeah, so people have turned it into a joke.
21:55I think there's a bit of a secret hinge that I have that,
21:59you know, perhaps all of this is cleverly well-placed marketing
22:02ideas behind his PR team.
22:04Who knows?
22:04But it's working.
22:06But will I think it will impact his future years to come
22:09as a marketable superstar footballer?
22:12Who knows?
22:13But he is on a trajectory to superstardom.
22:15Well, we don't know what's in the toilet water in Brisbane,
22:18if I can say that.
22:19But 2025 was forever the year that Queensland almost won everything.
22:22It was the men's origin.
22:24NRL, NRLW, AFL.
22:26And as we've already seen, they almost made it to win the AFLW as well,
22:30going all the way to the decider.
22:31Jess pains me.
22:33Is Brisbane the sporting capital of this country?
22:35We could have had the double-double.
22:37And I could have been sitting here all morning going,
22:39the double-double.
22:40But we fell just short.
22:41But, well, we walk around Brisbane now saying,
22:45we are the sporting capital.
22:46Move away, Melbourne.
22:47We are the new modern sporting capital.
22:49We've got the Olympics coming.
22:50People come to town.
22:51I'm like, welcome to the Olympic city of Brisbane.
22:54It's very exciting.
22:55And it was such a rare thing to go within the space of seven days,
22:58have those two NRL, AFL teams go back, you know,
23:02win their respective competitions.
23:04We've got a new stadium on the horizon, too, that they're doing.
23:07And it's just, it is the place to be.
23:09There's a genuine buzz around the city.
23:11And this week, of course, we have the Test match, too.
23:14So that'll be a nice thing, just to capital love.
23:15Yeah, all right, all right.
23:16You've won everything you have.
23:17Anything we'll leave you with.
23:18But as always, there were some beautiful sporting moments of the year.
23:21But one of the standouts was an Erin Phillips speech
23:23the night she was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.
23:26It really illustrated just how far women's sport has come
23:29since the daughter of Port Adelaide great Greg Phillips
23:31had to give up the game because there was no competition for girls her age.
23:36I can't imagine how hard it would have been
23:40to tell your 13-year-old daughter
23:42that she couldn't play the game that she loves anymore.
23:48And 27 years later, she's standing next to you in the Hall of Fame.
23:54It's just...
23:55APPLAUSE
23:56Oh, it still makes you a little bit teary.
24:04But now for the title of the silliest moment of the year.
24:07That might go to Peter Volandis.
24:08We're the first to say that the NRL has had an exceptional year,
24:12even if it started with the head honcho
24:13trying to convince Donald Trump
24:15to go to the NRL's Las Vegas extravaganza.
24:17Mr. President, we want to introduce you
24:21to the toughest game on earth, rugby league.
24:25We know you love physical, tough contact sports.
24:28There's no sport more brutal than rugby league.
24:32Our players don't wear pads or helmets.
24:34Hope to see you at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas
24:37on Saturday, March 1.
24:39Thank you, Mr. President.
24:40Just a strange moment in sporting culture, wasn't it?
24:44Oh, crazy things happen, don't they?
24:45But that's why we love sport.
24:47It is why we love sport and we love having you all on.
24:49Thank you so much for your time, as always,
24:51and we really appreciate it this week.
24:53But that is our program for today
24:55and it's our last one for the year.
24:56So a big thank you to all of our panellists
24:59for their wonderful insights on another amazing year of sport.
25:02The crew for getting up early on their Sunday
25:04to put the show together each week.
25:06A special thanks to Danny Morgan,
25:08who is the heart and soul of this show
25:09and has made my rookie season such an enjoyable one.
25:12And a big thank you to you at home,
25:14our viewers, for tuning in.
25:16We'll be back next year
25:16when we celebrate the program's 20th birthday,
25:19so make sure you do join us from February 1st.
25:22But for now, here's a look back
25:23through some of the biggest sporting moments
25:25and memories from 2025.
25:27Take care.
25:28Glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur!
25:32Huge breaking news to bring you.
25:34Massive breaking news.
25:35Ange Postakoglu is going to be sacked by Tottenham Hotspur.
25:39I actually quite liked him.
25:40But you can't end 17th in the league.
25:42You can't do it.
25:42We're just receiving word of a massive trade in the NBA.
25:45The Lakers have traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks
25:48in exchange for Luka Doncic.
25:50What?
25:51Yannick Sinner, who's been banned for three months for doping.
25:54Majority of the players feel like there is favourism happening.
25:57Honestly, if you have a f***ing stupid and wife.
26:00She should hand back the captaincy voluntarily.
26:05The end is a penalty to the Wallabies
26:07and the referees were too weak to give it.
26:11The AFL has come under fire
26:13after reducing Isaac Rankin's penalty
26:15for a homophobic slur from five matches to four.
26:19I played in the AFL for 10 years
26:21for the West Coast Eagles
26:22and I'm a bisexual man.
26:24And the dream comes true
26:28in Evian for Grace Kim.
26:32Min Jin Lee battles the Texas wind in heat
26:35and now she's a three-time major champ.
26:39And the Australian driver
26:41will see the checkered flag first.
26:44Oscar Piastri wins the Miami Grand Prix.
26:47Three Grand Prix victories in a row.
26:50And Burnick, Burnick seals up the New South Wales.
26:58Gannon done his mark.
27:00And Tom Gannon goes in for Queensland.
27:03The win for the two believers.
27:05Balls are out of timeouts.
27:07Two seconds left.
27:08Gannon for the win.
27:10Go!
27:11Oh my God!
27:13I cannot believe this!
27:15Now Gant starts to stretch away
27:18and stretch away.
27:19He does!
27:20And he's done it!
27:21He's broken the 10 seconds again!
27:23And a glorious goal for Nicola Olisagas.
27:26I cannot believe I'm a world champion!
27:29Oh my God!
27:31Oh my God!
27:33Oh my God!
27:33The moment we've seen
27:35from France 5
27:37to Suncorp Super Netball champion.
27:40Australia wins their first ever
27:43Asia Cup championship!
27:45Half yours, the history by third.
27:47One Larex has been done by triplex.
27:50Nothing ever, ever compares
27:51to Nic's feeling right now.
27:53Into the barriers
27:54goes Oscar Piastri.
27:56And this time
27:57it looked like it was all
27:58of his own doing.
27:59Ange Postacoglu has been fired.
28:03He was sacked 90 minutes
28:04after the full-time whistle.
28:05It does seem incredibly unfair.
28:07A perfect season
28:09of domination by the Roos.
28:12They are back-to-back premiers
28:13for the first time ever
28:14in AFLW.
28:16Amazing scenes!
28:19Let Brisbane get it done!
28:2247 point victors!
28:24Hufanga!
28:25She started it!
28:26And now she might have finished it!
28:28The Broncos are back on top
28:30of the rugby league world!
28:33And Walsh
28:34comes rampaging
28:35under the ball!
28:37Rhys Walsh has lifted it up!
28:40It's all over!
28:43It's been 19 years
28:45when the Broncos are back!
28:48Yes!
28:48She's got it now!
28:50Seven wickets for King!
28:52Best ever figures
28:53for an Australian
28:54in one-day internationals.
28:56And it is a stunning century!
29:01An Ashes spectacular
29:03from Travers Head!
29:05One of the all-time
29:07great performances
