00:00What's gonna happen?
00:04I gave you my word. I would return for you.
00:09Thor The Dark World director Alan Taylor is opening up about the backlash the movie received,
00:14saying he, quote, lost the will to live as a director.
00:17As part of a deep-dive interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his career
00:20and making the new Sopranos prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark,
00:23the Emmy-winning director got candid about the toughest period during his decades of filmmaking,
00:27when he directed two major franchise pictures back-to-back,
00:30Thor The Dark World and Terminator Genisys.
00:32After helming dozens of acclaimed episodes of prestige TV shows ranging from Mad Men to The Sopranos to Game of Thrones,
00:38Marvel offered Taylor the 2013 Thor sequel.
00:41Taylor tells THR,
00:42Marvel president Kevin Feige was always smart about looking at what worked and didn't in the last iteration
00:47and trying to retool from that, so I came in to bring some Game of Thrones to it.
00:51The Dark World is considered one of the MCU's weakest entries, even if it was a box-office success.
00:56Some known factors in its creative troubles included a tight production deadline
01:00and a script that was seemingly never finished.
01:03Thor, your bravery will not ease your pain.
01:08A few months before The Dark World was released,
01:10Taylor received an offer to direct another massive franchise film, Terminator Genisys.
01:15This is all wrong. John sent me here to save you.
01:17From the Terminator that was sent back to kill me, I know, but we already took care of him.
01:22We?
01:23I've been waiting for you.
01:26Taylor says,
01:27All the voices in my head and all the ones around me were saying I should do it because who didn't love the first two films?
01:33I thought we would go in and fix the script and everything would be great.
01:36Once again, the film was profitable, but the critic and fandom mobs were brutal.
01:40Taylor says of the impact it had on him,
01:42I had lost the will to make movies. I lost the will to live as a director.
01:45I'm not blaming any person for that.
01:47The process was not good for me, so I came out of it having to rediscover the joy of filmmaking.
