In a cramped, cluttered, dingy office lit by a single, weak bulb, veteran boxing promoter Podcast Jones (a man in his 50s with a rumpled suit and an unshakeable spark in his tired eyes) paces. Jones, whose career is widely considered a relic , is trying to conjure up a future for his only prospect, Louie 'Lightning' Rizzo , who he claims is the future of the middleweight division.
Jones finds his optimism in his own reflection, loudly declaring that he picks winners despite his meager current prospects—a small fight advertised on a smudged flyer10. He tries to finalize a proposition on the telephone with someone named Morty, promising "real gold" with forced cheer.
The scene is immediately disrupted by a knock and the entrance of his secretary, Sasha , who is dwarfed by the woman she introduces: Vanessa Valentine. Vanessa is an "Amazonian" with an athlete's frame and braided blonde hair, described as looking like a "Norwegian Goddess". Jones is transfixed, abruptly hanging up on Morty as his cat leaps from his lap.
Sasha explains that Vanessa was sent from Baltimore by Mildred , but is originally from "Venice. And Not Italy". Jones, struck dumb, realizes she means "Venice... California" —the 'Muscle Beach' Venice.
Jones slowly regains his "promoter swagger" , but the reality of Vanessa's imposing size is clear: she is an invasion, a tidal wave, and "the whole damn billboard", Sasha reveals Vanessa is a former Olympic hammer thrower who found the Olympic rings "too small. Too polite" , and now wants to fight where "You are the weight".
Realizing Vanessa represents "the kind of trouble I can retire on" , Jones's dream of Rizzo fades. He embraces the new reality, telling Vanessa he may "invent a new division just for you" , ending the scene with a triumphant, manic grin as he welcomes the Venice Valkyrie into his stable.
