00:00I had just moved in one or two days before I hadn't met Michael before I moved into the house
00:14it was a place to stay and I thought maybe it was a gift from the universe because I
00:20wasn't making that much money so it was kind of with some relief well you know this is something
00:28I worked I believe until probably like somewhere between five to eight o'clock at night I don't
00:38remember the exact time I got one I just laid down on the sectional couch and was watching some TV
00:53and at some point you know I went to sleep
00:57me thinking that this was my roommate's buddy cook stop messing around dude and he's like
01:13I'm not cook and I realized that this light you know is also accompanied by a shotgun
01:19and I was like okay and I proceeded to get choked out and I defecated on myself
01:29I presume that they're now going to take me somewhere because why else would they blindfold
01:40me and gag me and all these other things they said this is not about you just be quiet and
01:48you'll be all right I know if they take you somewhere else your chances rise exponentially
01:57that you are going to be killed
01:59I literally was clueless on who would have wanted this to happen to me
02:06I'm like okay this is happening where are we going let me try and pay attention as best I can
02:17shortly afterwards I'm like okay I hear what I think is them like putting gas in the car
02:31who kidnaps people and doesn't get gas first right you know that doesn't make much sense
02:36where's the fucking money we want the million dollars have a million dollars man
02:45very early on they're like we want the money and I was like all right cool you know what do you want
02:52and they're like we want we want a million dollars it's like how am I supposed to pay you a million
02:58dollars if I don't have a million dollars they kept saying million dollars million dollars million
03:03dollars and they're they're talking in a Mexican accent I would say stop crying like a little
03:08beach bulldog to make me think which I did you know that they're somehow gang affiliated or whatever
03:15you know I got hit in the face and my nose was all congested I couldn't breathe for shit
03:20I was like I got $30,000 in a safe and I have weed at the store that's probably worth you know
03:27$100,000 plus let's go there I'll give you everything that's there and they're like you think
03:33we're stupid there's cameras there we can't go there and I was like okay because I'm not telling them
03:43what they think is the truth they begin to hit me and use a rubber hose and at some point use a torch
03:54to bring me with and at some point use a taser to tase me with they know where my parents live
04:02they know about my dog they know about my girlfriend and what kind of car she drives
04:06they seem to know everything like like to a scary amount we're going way the f out there
04:14which doesn't make me feel any better about my situation it's like this is probably where I'm
04:22getting killed and where I'm getting buried the guy who was beating Michael said la musica and they
04:30put on this loud Mexican music he pretends to get on his cell phone my patron said if I can't have
04:40your million dollars that he wants your dick they pulled down my pants and they pull out my penis
04:48and affix a zip tie to the base of it so at this point you know I have no idea what's going on
04:57I'm in an immense amount of pain definitely not thinking right I'm in shock and then he proceeded to
05:05sing this weird little song like a five-year-old and back and forth and back and forth and back and
05:13forth they uh held me down and then proceeded to cut off my penis
05:21they poured bleach all over me which I thought was actually gasoline I figured I'm getting burned
05:40alive and I asked them you know not to burn me alive whoever it was who would cut off his penis
05:48took it with them and he said today's your lucky day and if you can find the knife you can cut yourself free
05:56you
06:26At that point, you know, I knew Mary was out there with me, which, you know, in all honesty,
06:48made me feel a lot better.
06:52Michael!
06:56I'm not sure how, still don't know, but I was able to cut the zip ties.
07:04Hold on.
07:07I know when someone has an injury like that, they can bleed out fairly quickly, and I did not want him to...
07:16I didn't want him to die.
07:18Like, this whole time, I'm just, like, praying, like, I hope, I hope, I hope she can get back to the road.
07:29She can find somebody.
07:30She can find her way back to me.
07:31Mission 59, we're going off-road to look for a second victim that has also been dropped off.
07:54Okay, he's right behind his fence.
07:56We're coming right now.
08:06We're here!
08:17Okay, he's going to get them off you, okay?
08:23Okay.
08:24I remember the morning pretty vividly that I got the call for the crime.
08:54I just got done with a SWAT call out, and I went home to catch some sleep, and I think I was asleep for maybe two hours.
09:01The field sergeant in Newport Beach called and said they're working a kidnapping, and I asked a little bit more about it, and he's like,
09:09hey, two bodies got dumped in Kern County, and I need you to come back in and handle the investigation.
09:13When I got out to the scene in Newport Beach, I was already two hours behind, so I'm just kind of gathering information at that point.
09:25I don't touch anything.
09:26I don't move anything.
09:27I just get a feel for what is and what is it.
09:31Would there be blood on that couch?
09:32No.
09:33Would there be cushions or pillows on that bed?
09:36Yes, they're not there.
09:37Where are they?
09:37I'm kind of assuming it's a robbery gone bad, but the house is actually well-kept.
09:42Someone that goes in to break into a house, they're throwing clothes everywhere, flipping mattresses.
09:47They're just looking for jewelry, money.
09:49None of that was happening.
09:49And then we found, like, all of these bed sheets covered in blood and pillows covered in blood up in the storage unit and, like, on the third floor.
09:58And you start to think, okay, this was a direct hit, except when my detectives get to Michael and Mary, they're saying they have no idea who it is or why they would be going after him.
10:08At that point, it was a whodunit, and we had very little clues.
10:15I was bruised all over my body.
10:19I was in the hospital for three or four days, almost completely sedated.
10:24They actually believed that Michael was going to die.
10:28That's why Detective Ryan Peters was involved, because he's a homicide detective.
10:32I remember talking to the officer that found him, and he is a 30-year cop.
10:38And even him, when he was describing it, I can read in his face that he's like, hey, these are pretty gruesome.
10:44And I'm like, okay.
10:45Like, I get it.
10:46You know what I mean?
10:46Like, I'm a violent crime investigator.
10:48Like, I get it.
10:50Visually, the injuries didn't look that bad.
10:53But when you, like, couple it with the emotion of being kidnapped by somebody you don't know and the fear of death for, like, hours, these injuries are gruesome.
11:03And they're violent.
11:04And they're horrendous.
11:05And you start to attach emotion to it, which typically you don't.
11:09And so the injuries, like, appeared worse.
11:13The bleach burns were there.
11:14Like, physical footprints in his skin.
11:16You can see them from the bleach and them standing on his chest.
11:19All his joints, his elbows, his hands, his shoulders are all swollen.
11:25And then you get all the way down to, like, the cutting off the penis.
11:28And just the thought and the visual is just overwhelming.
11:33I don't know if it's overwhelming because I'm a man or just overwhelming because you're, like, that was so violent and so gruesome and so much hate behind doing that.
11:46You almost felt the pain.
11:47I'm sure they said something to you as to why you were getting beat, right?
12:00A grateful white boy?
12:04What is it that you might be ungrateful for?
12:13They ask for what?
12:16Okay.
12:17It's really funny because I have about, oh, like, $8,000 in my hand.
12:22Okay.
12:23Any cartels?
12:26Yeah.
12:27Who might these guys be?
12:31I really don't know.
12:33Okay.
12:33No guesses?
12:37Interviewing Michael about the money, he was still extremely reluctant to open up the first, I mean, I would honestly say the first week.
12:46Cannabis still is illegal.
12:48Cannabis still is illegal.
12:50What everybody does in California, Colorado, Missouri is technically federally illegal.
12:56Previous to about two or three years ago, almost all cannabis was transacted with cash.
13:01You know, somebody gives you product and you either give them a receipt and you pay them at a later time or you pay them cash right then and there.
13:08Less than a year ago, armored cars that were picking up cash from licensed cannabis dispensaries were getting pulled over by local sheriffs and having asset forfeitures done on them by the feds and local sheriffs together.
13:21So, so now you have to keep your money in another location that you hope you won't have police interaction where they're going to take your money.
13:28He didn't have any financials, like he worked in a cash business, so he didn't have any money.
13:38I mean, on paper, he was broke, but when you really looked into Wright Green and the other dispensaries that Michael was owner of or participating in, he was like the king of dispensaries in Orange County.
13:51And you realized, oh, he, he might actually be making this much money.
13:55And if he is making this much money, then it's going to invite anybody and everybody that is a suspect.
14:03So for the lead detective, I get all of the tips and advice and thoughts and theories.
14:08So I remember one of my partners saying, hey, I got a tip from a neighbor.
14:12She saw a license plate and then he goes in and tells me this whole story.
14:15One of the neighbors, the adjacent neighbor, saw three strange guys on October 1st, the day before.
14:24But she described it as strange because they weren't obvious construction workers.
14:28They didn't have tools.
14:29They didn't have markings on their truck or anything like that.
14:32They put the ladder up against the house, but she thought it was suspicious because they never actually did any work.
14:38And then what was even more suspicious to her was the fact that only one of them drove away.
14:43And then she obviously saw all the police commotion that's going on around that house.
14:49And she approached us and said, hey, I still have a license plate from this quote unquote strange car from the day before.
14:57I remember keeping it on the desk and it's just the plate and like her name and her phone number.
15:03And so I'm like, all right.
15:04And then I rode the wave of tips coming in.
15:07And I remember for whatever reason, that license plate tip wasn't one of my favorite ones.
15:13The initial obvious like direction was Bill Bannon.
15:18Bill Bannon was one of my roommates.
15:20He was kind of a degenerative gambler.
15:23He had this really fun home game with a lot of people from Newport Beach.
15:26They gambled like crazy and they drank like crazy and they had a really good time.
15:29Oh, he was, he was bad news.
15:32I heard him referred to as Bill Cannon because he was Bill Cannon, the closer.
15:39That's how he got me to go out with him was, you know, he just kept hammering away at me.
15:44And I was like, okay, fine.
15:46I'll go to lunch.
15:48I mean, he's the kind of guy who will call you like literally 40 or 50 times until you pick up the phone.
15:55One day I left work and so I unlocked the front door to go in and I see Bill sitting in the living room with this guy I've never seen before.
16:13And they both look really serious.
16:17And they're just sitting there in this sort of creepily empty house.
16:22I immediately thought, this is some kind of a gambling debt situation.
16:28As I was taking my key out of the lock, I just put it right back in and left.
16:36Bill kind of bulldozed in and was like, come and stay at my house.
16:41It's, you know, we're two blocks from the beach and Newport and blah, blah, blah.
16:48I packed my stuff into a suitcase, which is basically what I was living out of.
16:52And I just moved in and that was Sunday night.
17:00And all of this, I want to remember it happened on a Monday, Monday night.
17:06It's like, what are the chances?
17:09He's this mystery guy, and he was the mystery guy, like right at the beginning.
17:16But like, it's not really jiving.
17:19We were going in a completely different direction of like, weed and money and it's a hit and it's an employee.
17:25Like, I thought it was an in-house type deal.
17:27And then I remember it was like the next day that I ran the plate just to like, oh, well, who is this?
17:36And it came back and it's not a male Hispanic.
17:38It comes back to Kyle Hanley at a Fountain Valley.
17:40And he's got a history with weed and arrests with weed and tickets with weed.
17:45And then I'm like, okay, maybe I'll look into this a little bit more.
17:48So I have a team looking into Kyle Hanley up in Fountain Valley.
17:56And what I'm doing is, is they're giving me real-time information.
17:59This is what the house looks like.
18:00This is what his car looks like.
18:02This is what his criminal history looks like.
18:04The energy bill is through the roof.
18:06We're talking excessive for that area.
18:08So he's in the weed industry.
18:10And then who else is in the house?
18:11Nobody else is coming in and out of that house.
18:14Doesn't even look like he's furnished the house completely.
18:16The truck, this truck now has a camper shell on it.
18:20Is he trying to clean it rapidly?
18:22No, he wasn't.
18:23But also, he wasn't driving it.
18:26He was driving another car.
18:27So he's leaving that car alone.
18:29Well, why is he leaving that car alone?
18:32The really interesting thing about Kyle is he wasn't sleeping.
18:36Like, he would stay in the living room playing Xbox and smoking weed
18:39or going to 7-Eleven and coming back for like a day.
18:43Like, never sleeping.
18:44And so it was very telling to us that he's anxious, he's nervous, he's worried.
18:52I put it all together, wrote a warrant, asked the guys,
18:55hey, next time he leaves, find a reason to pull him over, vehicle code violation,
19:01and I'll go talk to him.
19:02He left late night, another 7-Eleven run.
19:08He goes, he violates a vehicle code violation.
19:12They pull him over.
19:13I'm at home in bed.
19:14And so they call me.
19:15I get out of bed, wake up.
19:16And I'm like telling everybody, don't talk to him.
19:20Don't say a word.
19:21I'm going to do all the investigation.
19:22Don't read him his rights.
19:23Just hold him there for 15 more minutes.
19:26I'll be there.
19:26I introduced myself.
19:30Hey, I'm Detective Ryan Peters with Newport Beach Police Department.
19:33You understand I'm a detective?
19:34Yes.
19:36You understand?
19:36I know you.
19:37I saw, like, the color of his skin change.
19:41He went white.
19:42Obviously, you don't know how much I know.
19:45But it's enough to get to search for him.
19:47He started sweating, didn't open his mouth.
19:51Are you going to be OK?
19:52Yeah.
19:53I don't know what this is about, sir.
19:55And I said, hey, I'd like to talk to you about the kidnapping of Michael and Mary.
19:59And he just immediately said,
20:01I would just rather not answer any questions without my attorney.
20:17After kind of looking into Kyle, I just need to tie him to Michael.
20:22And I'm hoping Michael could do that.
20:24When they brought up the name Kyle Hanley, it didn't really even register.
20:30I don't think I was relating his last name to his first name because I never really used his last name.
20:35I just remember Michael kind of taking this big breath and kind of staring at the photo.
20:40And then I knew he knew who he was before he even opened his mouth.
20:44And so he goes, yeah, I know Kyle.
20:47I meet Kyle Hanley sometime in 2011.
20:53Kyle.
20:54Michael.
20:55Nice to meet you.
20:56You too.
20:56What you got?
20:57It's a little homegrown.
20:59He told the girl that worked at the front desk that, you know, he was a vendor.
21:04And he'd like to show his product to a buyer.
21:09Smells good too.
21:10At that point, if I evaluate it, I think it's going to be a good purchase.
21:14I actually bring in one of my buddies who's a big, big smoker.
21:17I'll call my test dummy.
21:19And he would, you know, roll up a little joint of it, smoke it and be like, yeah, that's good.
21:2560, 980, two grand.
21:28All right, man.
21:29We'll see how it sells.
21:30You know, I bought, I think, like a quarter pound or a half pound of weed from him.
21:34A couple days later, I look on the shelf like, whoa, we're almost out.
21:37It's like, okay, I'll call him up and get some more.
21:39So I hit him up, had him come in and bring in a couple of pounds this time because I saw, obviously, the customers like it.
21:45I'm telling you.
21:46I think his second transaction was in the range of $5,000 to $6,000.
21:51Four.
21:52That's six grand, man.
21:54Why are you always paying me in 20s?
21:55And apparently, I made some dumbass joke that I don't remember.
22:00Because I buried the hundreds.
22:02Huh.
22:04And that's kind of how I struck up somewhat of a friendship with Kyle.
22:08Yeah.
22:09So one weekend, I was like, what are you up to this weekend?
22:13What are you getting into?
22:14And he's like, oh, I'm actually, I'm going to go to Vegas.
22:16And I said, we're actually going to be out there, too, me and my partner.
22:20And he's like, oh, yeah?
22:21We should all go out and hang.
22:23Dude, let's freaking party.
22:24Yeah.
22:24The itinerary of our Vegas trip was we would go out, you know, nice dinners at night, and
22:32then go to the clubs, which always ended up meaning going to the strip clubs after.
22:37And pretty much we did that repeated.
22:40The entire trip was paid in cash between me and my partner, and we spent between $30,000
22:44and $40,000.
22:46It was a ton of cash at the time.
22:48It was too much.
22:49You know, I just fell for the peer pressure and did it.
22:54My view of Kyle as part of the group was just like he was one of the guys.
22:58I remember seeing a big grin on his face when we were at the strip club.
23:02I don't think we really made him pay for much either.
23:05He didn't pay for the hotel room.
23:06He didn't pay for the clubs or anything.
23:08I think the only thing he really paid for was the gambling, so he kind of got a free trip
23:13out of it.
23:13After that, Kyle just, you know, ghosted me.
23:20And at first, I didn't really make a big deal of it.
23:24I think I was probably, actually, the reason that I thought about it was that I was calling
23:29him up to get some more weed off him.
23:30So I called him.
23:33His phone wasn't working anymore, and I just figured, you know, he'd change his number
23:36or he got out of town or, you know, maybe he got in trouble.
23:40I didn't really think much of it.
23:42I think that's when the plan started to hatch.
23:45Dude, this guy's a high roller.
23:46He's spending tons of money on these big, expensive suites in Las Vegas.
23:51And then the way they repay him is basically to sneak into his house and then proceed to
23:56torture him, tase him, burn him, whip him, chop his dick off, and leave him in the desert.
24:01There's no way, in my opinion, a human today would take a million dollars cash and bury it
24:07in a public place.
24:09Like, it's just a little dumb.
24:10If he was really intelligent, he would have realized that that land was for sale.
24:15No, I really think you should come and see the property.
24:17Take a look at it.
24:18This gentleman named Chaz came into the store, who we thought was a very successful businessman
24:24in Orange County.
24:26And he was telling me about this gold mine that he had, you know, out in the desert and
24:30stuff.
24:31And I was just kind of listening to a story, you know, like, whatever.
24:34And he was like, well, you know, would you be interested in investing in it?
24:39And I was like, you know, I'll go check it out with you.
24:41We drive for a very long time.
24:56He's kind of showing me around this whole property, which is just to me, just a bunch
25:02of desert.
25:03I had no idea.
25:03I was like, where's the gold, dude?
25:05You know, like, how do we get the gold here?
25:08And he's like, well, we get it out of the rocks.
25:10And I was like, oh, if you give me the first $300,000, then we can get this back and running.
25:18I was like, dude, I have like 40 grand in my name.
25:20I don't think I got the money for that.
25:22He's like, I'm sure you and your partners could get it together and everything.
25:25And then I realized, like, this is a scam.
25:27So as soon as Kyle lawyers up, we take him back for processing to the Newport Beach Jail.
25:47So we're not arresting him for the kidnapping.
25:49We're not arresting him for the mayhem or any of the crime that's related to Michael and Mary.
25:54We have to keep him in custody for something else.
25:56So then I have to call everybody back out that night.
26:00First thing we do, I remember my crime scene investigator and I, we have the keys to this truck.
26:08This could be the crime scene that they used.
26:11So we open up the back of the truck, and it's just this massive smell of bleach.
26:17And I immediately, again, get really excited.
26:20And I'm like, he cleaned the entire back of this truck.
26:26And as I'm walking through this house, I'm like, all right, there's nothing in here.
26:31It's all gone.
26:32You know, it's just three days post the crime.
26:34Any good criminal would have gotten rid of everything, right?
26:37Next thing you know, I find these zip ties.
26:39And I look at the zip ties.
26:40I'm like, ah, I get a little more excited.
26:42Like, these match the zip ties we found on Michael and Mary.
26:45This is when we go into the backyard, and there's, like, trash bags just sitting up against the back slider.
26:49So we slowly, methodically kind of go through those trash bags.
26:52And there's towels.
26:53We're pulling towels out that reek of bleach.
26:56And then we're testing them for blood, and they're coming back positive.
26:59And then we keep pulling out further, and then we find this cut zip tie that matches the zip tie that Mary and Michael had on him,
27:06that matches the zip tie that's inside his house.
27:08That's the exact moment I'm calling District Attorney Matt Murphy.
27:12And he's like, yep, you're good to go.
27:14File the kidnapping charges on Kyle.
27:19We got really excited.
27:21We've got Kyle Hanley in custody.
27:22And then the next step is, like, who is Kyle Hanley?
27:25And when you look into Kyle Hanley, Kyle Hanley's nobody.
27:30Kyle is not a sophisticated criminal.
27:32I mean, he didn't fill up the van on the way to kidnap people and take them to the desert.
27:37So he's, like, not the brightest candle on the cake.
27:40I mean, you have to imagine this.
27:41I have Kyle in custody, dead to rights.
27:44Like, he's the guy.
27:44He's involved.
27:45It still doesn't, like, get me the other suspects.
27:48And even looking at his phone, you're looking at names, but none of them make sense to you.
27:52During the kidnapping, they're using these reservoir dog nicknames.
27:56Hey, your names.
27:59Mr. Brown.
28:00Mr. White.
28:01Mr. Blonde.
28:03Mr. Blue.
28:04Mr. Orange.
28:05Mr. Pink.
28:07Mr. Pink sounds like Mr. Pussy.
28:09Mr. Pink.
28:10No one came back to the house except me because I had nowhere else to go.
28:24I was scared.
28:26I thought, you know, maybe someone will be hiding and they'll jump out again while I'm sleeping.
28:32And I kind of looked over the whole house.
28:37Instead of sleeping in the master bedroom, which had a broken lock on the door, I took my little
28:44Chihuahua Bailey and I had this big blanket that I had brought from Florida that was super
28:49cuddly.
28:50And I took my pillow and my blanket into the little den room because it had two deadbolt
28:57locks and I would sleep in there and I felt a little bit safer.
29:05But there was blood on the couch.
29:07Now, at this point, we're looking for DNA.
29:17We're looking for clues, another arrow that I can follow.
29:20And at this point, it starts to dry up and I start to get frustrated.
29:25I start to go after Mike a little bit more.
29:29And I'm like, Mike, man, there's got to be more.
29:31Who's Kyle's buddies?
29:33Who's his friends?
29:34Who's he hanging out with?
29:35How often do you see him?
29:35What car does he normally drive?
29:37And Mike can't just give me anything.
29:39And it's not his fault.
29:41He just, Kyle never introduced any of it to him.
29:47So for months, I had nothing.
29:53The second I arrested Kyle, you know, that kickstarted everything.
29:57And so the clock sped up.
30:00It affected my ability to be a present father.
30:03Like, I stopped coaching.
30:06I didn't have time to do that.
30:07There was days that I just stayed at work, you know, for three days and I didn't come home.
30:12I want to go to bed at night knowing that I provided justice to Michael and Mary.
30:20On December of 2012, finally, I got a hit on the glove that we found in Kyle's truck.
30:32So now I'm extremely excited.
30:34In a few days, I'm going to have this name that's attached to it.
30:37And I hope that it's not, like, my CSI investigator.
30:42It's not anyone else's DNA.
30:43You know, like, please don't be a mistake.
30:46Be somebody that's tied into this.
30:48And then sure enough, I get this name, Hossein Nairi, and I'm like, who's Hossein Nairi?
30:57Hossein Nairi was born in Iran to parents who were very successful.
31:12His mother was a practicing attorney.
31:15His father was a practicing physician.
31:19There were some things that happened in Iran with his father that were sort of tragic.
31:24My understanding from the family is that his father had been kidnapped and held for ransom for many years.
31:32And I believe to this day he has never been located or found.
31:42When he entered the United States, he still dealt with those sort of demons.
31:50When you're diving into Hossein and we learn that, you know, he's got a violent history, we also learn that he's got a criminal past as well.
32:01A long time ago, he killed his friend in a vehicle accident.
32:04He was intoxicated.
32:05He had cocaine on board.
32:06He had alcohol on board.
32:08And they were coming back from a casino.
32:10And he ended up crashing, rolling his car.
32:13Hossein was actually badly burned and lost a few toes.
32:20And his friend was killed during that accident.
32:23They were going to go and arrest him for vehicular manslaughter.
32:26Well, he fled.
32:27He fled to South America.
32:29And for a year, he was gone on the run.
32:31And then later, he snuck back in, was convicted on a lesser charge, had to go to rehab,
32:36and basically didn't serve any jail time at all.
32:42Immediately, you know, start searching databases, Hossein Nayiri, and local database first, Newport Beach, and his name pops.
32:50And when it pops, it's associated with an evading case that took place in Newport Beach.
33:02Hossein was, you know, drinking and driving.
33:06And he boot-scooted it out of there and led a motor officer from Newport Beach on this high-speed car chase.
33:19This motor officer actually got in trouble for going, like, over 100 miles an hour.
33:23And Hossein's in a tunnel.
33:25Hossein Nayiri gets out, jumps in the water, and then swims off, and he evades us.
33:45Like, we can't apprehend him that night.
33:47The plate comes back to an address in Newport Beach.
33:50And they got a girl named Courtney Shigerian, and they start asking her, like, hey, who's Hossein Nayiri?
33:57And why does he have your vehicle?
33:59Because the vehicle's registered to her.
34:02And she's like, oh, it's my husband, and he should have it.
34:04And they're like, oh, no, he was involved in a pursuit, and he's not here.
34:08And that's when she flips on them that night and is like, I think it was stolen.
34:12Like, I don't know where he's at.
34:14They're like, hey, can we have his phone number?
34:15Let's call him.
34:16She's like, I'm not giving you his phone number.
34:18I'm not doing anything.
34:21So when I run, you know, his name, and I find out he's involved in the invading case,
34:25and I run the plate that he used to evade the cops in, and it comes back to this Tahoe,
34:30and it automatically pops up where it's at and who's in possession of it.
34:34And it says it's in our tow yard.
34:37And I immediately run out there and take a look to make sure it's still out there,
34:41it's still in our control, the windows are up, it's not being tampered with.
34:45And then I have to run immediately back to the police station and write a warrant for it
34:49so that I can investigate everything that's in it.
35:01I don't technically know what's going to be in this car,
35:04but I want to tie it to him at some point.
35:11So when I open it, there's not a ton of stuff in there.
35:19There's some male clothes, some sandals, some shoes.
35:23I do find the paperwork on it where he is insured on the vehicle.
35:27She is the registered owner.
35:28And then I'm kind of going through, and there's not much.
35:30You know, I'm looking for, you know, zip ties, panda paper, the stuff that I know about, right?
35:34And none of that's in this Tahoe.
35:35It's like an everyday-use kind of car.
35:37But then as I go through it, on the floorboard, just like, just underneath the seat that's
35:42kind of sliding out, it's a weird box.
35:43And I open the box, and I'm like, oh, it's a GPS tracker.
35:47And then I open this other box, and it's another GPS tracker.
35:51Open another box, and it's a little mini camera.
35:53And I'm like, well, there's going to be information on this.
35:56I'm seeing, like, the thumbnail and the photo of all the videos that are popping up, and
36:06every photo is Michael's house.
36:09I spent an entire week watching video of all the downloads that this camera was capturing.
36:15And the date is six months prior to the incident.
36:18And it's blowing me away.
36:20Yeah, buddy.
36:25God bless America.
36:28This is how you do it, huh?
36:29Learn a thing.
36:30This is how you do it.
36:33Military training does pay off, buddy.
36:36They watched him for six months?
36:39Like, why?
36:40What happened?
36:41Who are these guys?
36:42Who are these guys?
36:50There are killers that are cold, and they're dead to the world.
36:54But, like, Hossein's a different breed.
36:57When you look back on this crime, it's almost like he enjoyed it.
36:59He liked it.
37:01He liked manipulating people.
37:02He likes controlling people.
37:04He likes hurting people.
37:06He likes hunting people.
37:07So, like, that type of mental framework that he has is 100% the most unique individual
37:15I've ever had to hunt down.
37:16So, I send a team to start following Courtney.
37:32Where's Courtney?
37:32Well, they moved from that house they listed.
37:35So, as soon as we started doing that, we realized pretty quick, like, we don't see Hossein anywhere.
37:40We see Courtney, like, driving around, running errands, going back and forth from school.
37:47But we don't see Hossein.
37:49And for the several days after that, Hossein is showing in Courtney's apartment.
37:57He's not going on food runs.
37:58He's not going to the gym.
38:00He's not going to work.
38:01He's making Courtney do everything.
38:02And he's hiding out from cops because we have Kyle Hanley in pocket.
38:05I know at this point he's a potentially armed and dangerous suspect.
38:09He's a violent felon.
38:11He's got violent tendencies.
38:13Like, I'm not going to just door knock this thing.
38:18I remember from talking to the pursuit investigator that she really wanted that Tahoe back.
38:25Because the only way they were going to get it back from the pursuit investigator was if Hossein Nairi came in and gave a statement.
38:31And that wasn't going to happen.
38:33So, they just, like, left the car.
38:37I call her and say, hey, this is Newport Beach Police Department.
38:40I'm investigator Ryan Peters.
38:42I don't tell her what I'm investigating.
38:43And I just say, hey, you're going to have your car back.
38:46We're done with it.
38:47And you can come pick it up and sign for it.
38:49And she comes down.
38:50Well, as we're kind of setting up this ruse, I have physical officers at the apartment.
38:58They're going to storm the castle, serve the warrant, and go in and apprehend him and safeguard the evidence for me while I'm talking to her at the station.
39:09Newport Beach set up surveillance equipment inside, like, the property room.
39:13You know, they had no intention of turning over the property.
39:15She's nice.
39:18We're talking about her leaving it there for so long.
39:21I'm telling her we're going to waive the tofis because it's extremely expensive at this point.
39:26I wish there was a videotape on my face because you're literally leaving the evidence on the table of a crime.
39:33So, say, like, a bloody knife.
39:34And you're like, do you want this knife?
39:35And she's going to say, yes, I do.
39:37And she's going to take it.
39:38And you're like, what in the world?
39:39And so I've got this GPS tracker, and I've got these cameras, and it looks nefarious, like, nobody has this stuff.
39:46I'm like, here, sign this paperwork, and you can take all this stuff.
39:49And she's like, no problem.
39:55She goes to grab this stuff.
39:56I'm like, oh, hold on.
39:58This is evidence to a kidnapping that I'd like to talk to you about.
40:01And that's when that switch flips.
40:03She goes from this sweet, conversational, like, innocent girl to this very upset, pissed off, do you know who I am?
40:12And she starts throwing out, like, do you know who you're talking to?
40:15Do you know who my father is?
40:16I'm a lawyer.
40:18And then I'm like, hey, you're not a lawyer.
40:19You're in law school.
40:20She's like, I know what you're doing.
40:21You're tricking me.
40:22You can't do that.
40:23I'm going to sue you.
40:24And she's getting very pissed off about it.
40:31And so then I have to calm her down, tell her about the kidnapping.
40:46I tell her, hey, I'm actually not a property investigator.
40:50I investigate violent crime, and I'm investigating kidnapping involving Michael and Mary.
40:55It involves Hossein Nairi and Kyle Hanley.
40:58Who are they to you?
41:00And she clams up.
41:02We proceed to just kind of go through the warrant, right?
41:04I take her property.
41:05I take her phone.
41:08When they open the apartment.
41:10Clear!
41:11Clear!
41:15Nothing.
41:16It's clean.
41:18Phone's in there, but he's not.
41:22And that's when I got nervous.
41:26That's when I actually kind of started to panic.
41:29Then she knew that we were on to her, and that we were on to Hossein.
41:34We have no idea where he is.
41:36We don't have his phone.
41:37I have no way to track him.
41:39And it's all clean.
41:45Ladies and gentlemen, we have begun our descent into Tehran.
41:49Please turn off all portable electronic devices and stow them until we have arrived at the gate.
41:54Introducing myself like first name, last name.
42:00This is Hossein Nairi speaking.
42:02This is Hossein Nairi.
42:12Please join me if you will.
42:13You're welcome.
42:13You guys are on to my next mission.
42:14You're welcome.
42:15The End
42:45I don't think that's necessarily true.
42:52If I have a plan, she encourages it.
42:55How can we create a scenario where we arrest him?
42:59They're going to go to jail for the rest of their lives.
43:02Now comes the ruse.
43:03Apparently, it's pretty easy to escape from the Orange County Jail.
43:06Adios.
43:07Oh, my God. They let Hannibal Lecter out.
43:10True Crime Story Smugshot.
