00:00Fancy seeing you here, Grumpy.
00:04Did we wake you?
00:08Two months to the Lego's deadline.
00:12Hey.
00:14Two months to...
00:16All right, you two.
00:29It's two months to the Lego's deadline.
00:31Tick, tock.
00:36I'm Gray Benko, an interior designer in the low country of South Carolina.
00:41I bring pattern, color, and creativity into my clients' homes alongside my partner, Crime
00:47Chelsea.
00:48Whoa.
00:48An interior designer extraordinaire who also keeps me in check.
00:52Nope, no, let's drag it.
00:53And my general contractor, Grumpy, who can build anything that we dream of.
00:57You don't need me?
00:58I don't need you.
00:58I love that.
00:59And also happens to be my dad.
01:01Oh, my gosh.
01:02There's color everywhere.
01:05Despite my name, my world is a rainbow.
01:09This is Mr. and Mrs. Lagos' home.
01:14The house was built in 1915.
01:16They recently purchased the home because he's about to retire, and he wants to live close
01:20to the beach so they can vacation with their grandkids.
01:22Today, we're going to meet with Jim and Nikki.
01:25Hello.
01:26Welcome.
01:27How are you?
01:27Great.
01:28The home does have over 100 years of wear and tear and wonkiness, but it's just rich with
01:35history and all the things that we love.
01:37So it's going to be a fun one.
01:39Is Nikki here?
01:40Hi.
01:40Jim and Nikki are from Ohio.
01:42They're going to be staying there during the project.
01:45From the time they hand us the keys, we've got three and a half months to get this done.
01:49Can we do it?
01:51Sure, we can do it.
01:53Welcome to the historic Wilson Cochran home here.
01:57It has the tradition of Victorian homes, and the thing we love about it is it has a wonderful
02:03location, wonderful historic feel, and it is going to provide us a whole lot of room
02:08now for our grandchildren.
02:10I love that.
02:10The grandchildren take a lot of space.
02:11Yes, three and hopefully more grandchildren.
02:14Oh, my goodness.
02:14This is great.
02:15So this is really, really a beautiful home.
02:18What do you want the feeling to be when people first come in?
02:21We want it to be very welcoming and a place the grandchildren love to come and run around
02:26the house and feel very comfortable.
02:27So nothing too precious.
02:29Yes, yes.
02:29Formal, but not breakable.
02:31Yeah.
02:33Okay, so right off the bat for this space, my mind goes straight to wallpaper.
02:39Is that something that we're open to?
02:41Well, I have to ask Nikki, but I'm going to say yes.
02:44Okay.
02:44I'm open to something throughout, yeah.
02:45When wallpaper goes on in this entire stairwell, it's going to have the effect of making this
02:51space feel bigger.
02:52Because your eyes are going to want to go up.
02:54And as far as colors...
02:56For me, any shade of white is good.
02:58However, Nikki loves Skylar, purple hair, and so forth, so...
03:01I'm open to just about any of them.
03:03We actually painted our first kitchen yellow.
03:05You're in the right wheelhouse, then.
03:06Okay, that's good.
03:08Whatever Nikki wants.
03:09I have one thing I'm dug in on in this space.
03:12I knew there would be at least one thing.
03:14Yeah.
03:15And this place that we're standing on used to be marsh and mud.
03:18Right.
03:19Shortly after they started building houses here, they began sinking.
03:22So if you look around the house, you can see everything's not plumb and square.
03:26So I would be careful about stripes.
03:28This house is down by the Battery, which is where the oldest part of the city meets the
03:35newer part of the city.
03:37And by newer, I mean the part that they filled in around the early 1900s to create more city
03:43toward the water.
03:45It's such a special area to the city of Charleston, and it feels like an honor to do a house down
03:51there.
03:51Do you want to show us the rest of the house?
03:52Sure, sure.
03:53Right this way.
03:54The formal living room area.
03:56That's what I'm envisioning.
03:58I can imagine little baby grandchildren happy to come to a house that's got all this daylight
04:03and all this cheerfulness.
04:05What I'm hearing from you is step one, we'd lose the blinds and just really let that light
04:10flood in.
04:11Spectacular.
04:12This room will be paint, but I feel like let's have the walls refinished prior to painting
04:17because that's plaster.
04:18Yeah, it's plaster.
04:19The walls are going to all be plaster.
04:21With the history of the home, it makes sense to save it and make the picture molding what it
04:26was originally intended to be, too.
04:28We have lots of pictures of the grandchildren.
04:30We can move it around.
04:31You have to worry about damaging the plaster.
04:32Exactly.
04:33That's a great idea.
04:33Yes, yes.
04:34That's excellent.
04:35Because these spaces are so open to each other, we could take the same trim color and continue
04:40it on, and then the walls can complement the wallpaper in here and feed off of it.
04:45I think that would be spectacular.
04:47Well, speaking of trim work, this room is very beautiful.
04:50Can we go take a peek in there?
04:51Love to.
04:52This is the dining room?
04:54Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
04:56Yeah, this room is really special.
04:59It's one of the gems of the house.
05:01You can imagine in the 20s, Judge Cochran having his lawyer friends here for a formal dinner.
05:06Oh, my goodness.
05:07It's soaked in history.
05:09What do you want this space to feel like?
05:11Formal when need be and casual most of the time.
05:13Okay, the trim in here is really special, so let's highlight that, but do something that
05:19complements this space and do a mural on the upper walls.
05:24It could be really, really beautiful.
05:25I think it would be excellent.
05:27There's one thing missing in this house, a plaque from the Preservation Society of Charleston.
05:32I think it lends itself very, very well at that.
05:34That would be wonderful.
05:35Yeah, it really deserves that.
05:36It could be really...
05:37Yes, yes, yes, yes.
05:38We'll have to apply if we can look into it.
05:40That would be good.
05:41Excellent.
05:42Do you want to show us the rest of the house?
05:43Please, right this way.
05:45Right this way.
05:46Okay.
05:48Okay.
05:49Okay.
05:50Wow.
05:51Well, this is different.
05:52This room is obviously very different.
05:55What are you guys thinking that you want to do in here?
05:57Food is a big part of our life.
05:59It's sort of a Greek thing.
06:00Yeah, this is true.
06:00My late father used to say, the only thing you're taking out of this life is what you have
06:04in your stomach.
06:05So why do we limit ourselves to a small kitchen over there when we have this huge den?
06:11You're exactly right.
06:12I mean, there's plenty of room to make a big, full kitchen and also a nice seating area and
06:17still have other possibilities where the kitchen is now.
06:21You'd have a big island in the center with enough room where you could seat grandkids.
06:25The cabinetry would work this wall and across this way.
06:29Wow.
06:30I would like a window over a sink.
06:31That could be right there.
06:32That would be perfect.
06:33And you have to have a TV for cartoons.
06:35That could go right above that fireplace.
06:37You lose that door, but that gives you wall space for the seating area.
06:42And where you can put a bar.
06:44That would be perfect.
06:45Cased opening leading into a mudroom.
06:48And then here, they have a butler's pantry.
06:50Would that be?
06:51That would be spectacular.
06:52I'm getting really excited about this.
06:55It's wonderful.
06:56So we know what this floor plan is going to be, pretty much.
06:59Absolutely.
07:00Can we go over that-a-way where the old kitchen used to be?
07:02Yes, please.
07:03Absolutely.
07:04This is great.
07:05Let's go.
07:08All right.
07:09All right.
07:09Well, this is a much smaller kitchen than your new one's going to be.
07:12A cozy little kitchen.
07:13Indeed.
07:14We talked about maybe having a butler's pantry in here.
07:18And given that there's already the butler's stair, narrowly tall treads,
07:22stair that goes up that way, this is the perfect spot for it.
07:26Plus, putting one right here will probably be helpful in getting a historic designation
07:31from the city, since this was more than likely where the original butler's pantry was.
07:36Excellent.
07:36Wonderful.
07:37And then beyond here, a mudroom would be good.
07:41Excellent.
07:41Looking forward very much to that.
07:43Yep.
07:43Well, thank you for your expertise.
07:45We're excited.
07:46We trust you.
07:47And here are the keys to the kingdom.
07:50Oh, boy.
07:50So you go for it, Joe.
07:51Now, you know, you're not getting this back until it's done.
07:55We always ask our clients to hand over the keys because there's a lot of big decisions
08:00that we have to make.
08:02And to the homeowners, it can be scary if you're just seeing small pieces of it
08:07before you see the whole thing come together.
08:11Jim and Nikki want to be in the house before the grandkids are out of school.
08:14And it's a lot to do in three and a half months.
08:17But when all the grandkids see the house for the first time, I think that's going to be
08:20really special.
08:21Yes.
08:22Yeah.
08:29Well, here we go.
08:31Today's the day.
08:31We get started with the demo at Legos.
08:34There's a lot to do in a short period of time to get this house done.
08:38We're tearing out wall finishes, cabinets, some electrical, some plumbing, et cetera.
08:45We're not really tearing out any framing.
08:48We're adding some framing back, but it's primarily just finishes and it being torn.
08:55Tiffany.
08:56How you doing?
08:57I'm good.
08:58How are you?
08:59Good to see you.
09:00Good to see you.
09:01Can see we're at it.
09:02Yeah.
09:02We had some surprises up front, you know, with the plaster.
09:05But in this room, I think because it came from 1980, it's what we expected.
09:10This will be the kitchen.
09:12Yeah.
09:12And we've discovered a few things.
09:14This brick wall and that nice transom there.
09:16So it's pretty exciting stuff.
09:18It is.
09:18You mentioned to me on the phone that there was some thought about maybe exposing this
09:23brickwork.
09:24Right.
09:24There's a lot of services.
09:26Yeah.
09:27We'll have to see what Gray and Chelsea decided for this area.
09:30Mm-hmm.
09:31Anytime we find brick inside of an old house, we try to make it a feature.
09:36It's a little tough here because there's plumbing pipes and there's electrical wires that are running
09:40through there.
09:41There's an electrical panel in front of it.
09:43So that may make it too difficult to deal with.
09:46So let's talk about the plaster.
09:48That's going to be a lot of elbow grease.
09:50Right.
09:50To fix that.
09:51But it's original.
09:53And if we can save that plaster, it's the thing to do.
09:56But if we do, it's going to be a couple of weeks that we weren't really prepared for.
10:00There's some buckling on the plaster and some of the finished coat has pulled free from
10:06the base coats.
10:07It needs to be completely refurbished.
10:10I'm not going to hold you up anymore.
10:13The demo's moved along.
10:14We found some brick with original paint colors, which always gets Gray and Chelsea excited.
10:18So we need to get them in here and have them look this over.
10:22But they need to get here quickly so we can start putting this house back together.
10:26So my dad called.
10:38That's never good.
10:40Well, this time it's exciting.
10:41I'm not in trouble.
10:44I mean, this all could be a ploy to get us there.
10:46I don't know.
10:47We'll see.
10:47But according to him, there is some brick that has been exposed and he wants us to see.
10:54Chelsea is an interior designer extraordinaire with the rare ability to understand my vision.
11:01You're the muse.
11:02That's weird.
11:03That transom has to be fixed and shown.
11:09It's gorgeous.
11:11Yeah.
11:11Are we going to leave the brick exposed?
11:14No.
11:14It is a cool element, but I think we try to mimic the rest of the house.
11:19There's no reason to expose this particular brick.
11:22And this house is craftsmen.
11:25So it was never meant to have exposed brick.
11:28And we want to keep it as original as possible.
11:31It's a no.
11:31It's a no.
11:32I feel like we should address the color.
11:35Is it arsenic?
11:36It's very similar to arsenic.
11:39We talked about their first yellow kitchen together.
11:42And I think we should incorporate that somewhere.
11:45But they're so into the history of this home.
11:48It could be worth making the kitchen cabinets green.
11:51I don't know if we've done green cabinets before.
11:53I don't know if we have, either.
11:55Oh, check.
11:56Well, maybe that's a decision made.
11:59This feels like an extension of the kitchen.
12:00Yes.
12:01So I think in the butler's pantry, we just carry the same colors.
12:05Yeah.
12:05But I do think yellow mudroom cabinetry.
12:07That would be perfect.
12:08Pay homage to a first kitchen without going all the way in.
12:12I'm so glad that my dad had us stop by today.
12:14We have a paint color picked out.
12:16I know.
12:16Yeah.
12:17And things are moving along.
12:18Look at us.
12:21With demo finished, our crews have been very hard at work to get the new case opening and
12:33the walls of the mudroom finished.
12:35They've been putting up drywall and rewiring all of the electrical and plumbing for the
12:40butler's pantry and the new kitchen.
12:43In the front of the house, the American College of Building Arts is helping us fix the existing
12:47plaster, but our demo crew found an issue with the ceiling and the foyer that needs to be
12:53handled as well.
12:55Hello.
12:56Hello.
12:57How are you doing?
12:58Good.
12:59Good to see you.
13:00Thanks for being here.
13:01How are you doing?
13:02Thanks for being here.
13:03Oh, my goodness.
13:04Those cracks are way worse when you see them with all the stuff off.
13:07Yeah.
13:07We removed a lot of the paper that was overlying the walls and revealed cracks in various places.
13:14And look at the ceiling that just fell down.
13:17Yeah.
13:18We were caught off guard a good bit by how damaged the existing plaster is.
13:23It's worse than we thought.
13:25But good news is we have Steve here and he's handling it.
13:28Yeah.
13:28And we're very, very lucky because we get to live where the American College of Building
13:33Arts is.
13:34They specialize in plaster and in all of these old crafts that you can't really find other
13:41places.
13:42Is this going to push us back much?
13:45This three-day operation shouldn't be a big setback in the whole process.
13:50The plaster actually is adhered pretty well to the lath.
13:54It feels solid.
13:55So that's a good thing.
13:56It's nice to know that instead of pulling it down and putting up a different material,
14:01you can repair it.
14:03The plaster saves time.
14:05It saves money.
14:06It is worth it because these homes deserve to have their history respected.
14:13So this is the wood lath that the house is based upon for plastering purposes and then
14:19filled in with plaster.
14:21So what we'll do with these wall cracks is widen those to get a little bit more solid
14:27material in there, fill those in, and then put a bonding agent over the entire wall and
14:33apply this fiberglass mesh.
14:36Oh, cool.
14:37It's very special that we have access to people that can actually do the repairs and not just
14:42replace these things.
14:43And it's fun to think about people doing these things the exact same way hundreds and hundreds
14:50of years ago.
15:03We've got all the paint samples.
15:04Yes.
15:05Lots of them.
15:06It's a really important day for us because it's our design date where we get in there
15:11with our colors and our fabrics and our wallpapers and really hammer out all the final details
15:15of what we're going to do.
15:17Holy moly, it's different.
15:19Like it was just like a plaster heap and now the walls and ceiling are brand new.
15:24It looks really good.
15:25Wow.
15:26I think we start in the living room.
15:28Okay.
15:29Since we can't really pick the color in the foyer until we know what color this room
15:34is going to be because they're so open to each other.
15:36For the living room, I'm feeling like a peachy pink would be really nice on the walls with
15:42sort of a sunny bright green on the trim because the Lagos has told me that they want it to
15:47feel very welcoming and they love the natural light.
15:51This is the cabinetry.
15:52As a nod to the history of the home, we've already picked a really pretty green for the cabinetry
15:57and the kitchen and the butler's pantry.
15:59And I think that the color in the living room is going to complement it really well.
16:04It's just a feeling.
16:05You don't know why?
16:06I just feel peach.
16:08My brain says peachy pink.
16:10More pink than orange.
16:11Well, that's probably because they're complementary colors.
16:14Pink is basically light red and red and green complement each other on the color wheel and
16:20they are meant to go together.
16:23Check out this one.
16:24It's got pinks and greens and I think it'll work really well in the foyer.
16:28I mean, I do like it and it does work with these pinks and greens, but not so much with
16:33the cabinet color.
16:35So typically we would use the wallpaper in the foyer to pull the colors from the whole
16:40house.
16:41But in this case, we have to use the trim color because that's what we're going to see carry
16:46through the entire house.
16:48Let's just go with this as a temporary option while we're here.
16:52Every single room is connected with trim and they all are touching each other and open
16:57to each other.
16:58And from A to Z, you can see everything.
17:01When you're eating cereal at the kitchen island, you're looking into the living room and it
17:05has to work.
17:06You don't want to ruin your breakfast.
17:08What do you like?
17:10So my favorites are the top left and the middle right.
17:16The lighter color feels sophisticated and high end, but I don't think the greens work
17:22at all.
17:23Not with the cabinets.
17:25They don't.
17:26They clash.
17:27So we're going to have to revisit this.
17:30Revisit the greens.
17:31All right, let's just move on to the dining room and see if that helps us at all.
17:34But they're so pretty.
17:35I wonder what it would look like if the trim was the same color as the cabinets.
17:39I do have that particular color.
17:43The green trim clashed with the green in the kitchen.
17:46So we're going to have to put a hold on this for a second and come back to the living room.
17:51Let's go.
17:52I really didn't like having to pick the cabinet color before I had mapped out the colors for
17:57the rest of the house.
17:58All right.
17:59And we don't normally.
18:00But the Lagos' wanted to be back in before the end of the summer and cabinetry has long
18:05lead times.
18:06These are some of the murals that I brought that felt...
18:11Charleston-y?
18:12Charleston-y.
18:13Jim and Nikki want this dining room to be formal when need be, but casual the majority
18:18of the time.
18:19We're trying to get this house on the historic registry, so I want to do a mural because you
18:25can really feel the history.
18:27Now let's both point to the one we like the best.
18:30Charleston-y.
18:31Charleston-y.
18:32Charleston-y.
18:33Charleston-y.
18:34Charleston-y.
18:35Charleston-y.
18:36Charleston-y.
18:37Charleston-y.
18:38Charleston-y.
18:39Charleston-y.
18:40Charleston-y.
18:41Charleston-y.
18:42Charleston-y.
18:43Charleston-y.
18:44Charleston-y.
18:45Charleston-y.
18:46Charleston-y.
18:47Charleston-y.
18:48Charleston-y.
18:49Charleston-y.
18:50Charleston-y.
18:51Charleston-y.
18:52Charleston-y.
18:53Charleston-y.
18:54Charleston-y.
18:55Charleston-y.
18:56Charleston-y.
18:57be great let's do it heroes tell stories and this house is downtown on the peninsula and when you go
19:04down there there are all these giant massive oak trees that overlook all the houses there's tree
19:09swings in them and children playing and it just felt like it deserved to have that feel
19:15what do you like whatever we pick is going to be in the foyer and also in the living room
19:24the cabinet color green it's pretty together yeah but we can't use that color in this room
19:30this room this room and this room but you can't tell me this isn't the best look i'm not saying
19:36that it's not nice but it's just a lot of the same color for me why can't one color be in more than
19:41one room i like for all the colors to tie through but i like for each room to have a totally different
19:47feel i know this is not near normal but this is something that's traditionally done traditionally
19:53houses were arrays of color yes but this is going to have a multi-color wallpaper in the foyer we can
20:01find a super fun floral print and we can even do a two-tone paint job on the stairs so that we don't
20:07have all the same green we'll figure out the exact shades but the living room will be a gorgeous peachy
20:13pink and once you get the rugs down a couch some antique furniture maybe some lounge chairs those rooms
20:19won't feel green at all come on come on gray bingo if it stinks you can blame me it's a really pretty
20:27color it's a very pretty color we can do things different this is obviously not my norm but i'm
20:33willing to try it it could be fun because it feels like a challenge to make each room look completely
20:38different even though we're using the same color i can go outside my box even though it's not something
20:44that i would normally do it makes the most sense to take the color from the kitchen and pull it
20:50through the entire house and just keep the trim the same if we do the green in this room i want to take
20:58this color blue yep and put it inside of the cabinets well that'll be beautiful we'll find a rug
21:05and obviously need to get a table we can put a piece of furniture up against that wall and then throw
21:10some art up on the picture railing find a different light but we can reuse this one in the foyer
21:16and we can definitely do a banquette seat i love it okay let's do the kitchen the kitchen
21:23okay in the kitchen we want to brighten up the space by putting creamy white walls up and letting
21:31the green cabinetry just become the star of the show so let's talk about the layout okay big island
21:39topped with dark stone will be right in the middle cabinetry will be in an l shape refrigerator goes
21:45over here marble countertops that go up the wall but in a lighter color than the island so that they
21:51really pop and the ceiling transitions are going to be chunky moldings and a bar right next to the
21:56mudroom yeah yeah and the butler's pantry we just carry the same colors throughout yeah and then we have
22:02the mudroom which we talked about doing yellow because she loves her old kitchen her first one
22:07was yellow but you know what color it's not green all right how could you not be happy in this mudroom
22:17it's kind of perfect it's great all right so four lockers here yeah so the antique piece here
22:24yep and then ivory on the walls i think it's going to be a beautiful home my son's beautiful
22:29this was one of the hardest design sessions that we've ever had we covered a lot of ground we made
22:35a lot of messes let's just go home all right here's to just leaving it was hard they were so open to like
22:43whatever we thought was best for the home so i guess you feel like an extra responsibility
22:47to do a really good job but i think it'll be a very rewarding one
22:51things are really starting to move along at the lego's house we've decided on specific colors and
23:02now that all of the drywall plaster and paint prep has been completed the painters can get going
23:08all of the trim throughout the house is going to be the beautiful green we picked
23:12the living room is going to be a really gorgeous paint color and today's really big day because after
23:17all the back and forth and all the heartache we get to see it we were in it i feel apprehensive
23:23after that last time we were here listen come on keep up i don't even know what we landed on honestly
23:29green chaos a lot of green oh wait what's wrong with the paint this wall color is not right
23:37this is not at all i thought it was gonna look like it's the wrong color this feels very orange orange
23:50and bright i don't like it we're gonna have to repaint these walls look at this
23:58to me this feels much more in line with what we were going for the paint was mixed incorrectly it was
24:04not at all the color that we picked out for this but it said it was on the box but holding up the
24:10paint sample it is not the same not even close what is your opinion same let's do it the best part
24:18about pain is if you can buy one more gallon you can fix the situation no big deal three berries
24:24you're gonna be fine you're gonna be fine it's fine what are you doing here what are y'all doing
24:31here are you working we are getting stuff done we've had all kinds of issues hey how are you doing
24:38good to see you uh big issues we still have to figure this out oh the puzzle here is this electrical
24:46panel that you have to have access to you can't move it because it's too expensive too time consuming so how
24:53do we make that go away my thought would be to sheetrock it the problem with that is it's off
24:59center yeah um there is another option build shallow cabinetry i kind of like your option but build some
25:10panels that look like the fronts of the cabinets where you can push button open to get inside of
25:15oh my gosh that's a great idea give me like a giant spice rack right but it could cost us a week
25:23okay as per usual grumpy style he is added to the timeline
25:31we can make that up in the back end i think and i feel like we have a good solid plan moving forward
25:37with all the hiccups finally out of the way things are really starting to take shape all the cabinetry
25:48has arrived and so the crews are starting to get it all installed once that is done they will add a
25:54marble black splash and counter in the kitchen and then put countertops on the new bar in the hearth
25:59room around the sink in the butler's pantry and then of course on that big gorgeous island
26:07while the painters work on correcting the color in the living room chelsea and i are headed to
26:13meet up with my friend who sources the most incredible vintage rugs from turkey
26:21it's like the disney world of rugs the lagos's need rugs for pretty much every room in this house
26:29and we're looking for something that looks like it could have been there for hundreds of years
26:34but that doesn't mean boring this one i think could be a possibility because it has
26:38the right greens it's got it sort of pulls that like same peachy pink that we need and it still has
26:45like a really traditional feel but it but it also has the brown tones to help ground it which again i
26:52think we need oh lord rugs ground a room just what they do they're on the ground and it grounds
26:59they are grounded yeah think about all the colors that are in the wallpaper i think this one would
27:06pull a lot of those colors in really nicely if you have a bunch of colors in a room and you're not
27:12really sure how to make them all tie together if you find the right rug that incorporates all of those
27:19colors then suddenly everything just makes sense very pretty we found so many great options yes
27:25it'll be perfect
27:33there's so much still to do to get the house finished but the mural in the dining room is being installed
27:41so i'm gonna head over there and see how it looks and i also want to see how the wallpaper is going to
27:48feel in the foyer hey how are you doing melissa good it looks so good i'm so happy to start seeing
27:57colors other than green it's exactly what i wanted it to be it feels like you're sitting in this room
28:04full of history like amongst the oaks you know i hope that the old misshapen walls aren't too much of a
28:11problem but it looks like you're handling them very well it's perfect pattern behind any bumps that's
28:17true we have to have this whole thing done in the next three weeks so i seriously really appreciate
28:22you this is amazing jim and nikki have been so open to whatever we want to do and one of the things
28:31that i'm really excited to see is the wallpaper in the foyer because that paper contains colors that
28:38we'll be able to use and incorporate all throughout the house we had such a hard time trying to figure
28:45out how in the world we were going to do this but this one just pulls in all the right colors
28:50and it's even got the yellow from the mud room i'm starting to get really excited because i feel like
28:56this house is finally starting to come together oh that's so pretty
29:08there's less than a week to go before we hand the keys back to the lagos family and there's lots to
29:14happen the wallpaper is up in the foyer and all the floors have been refinished throughout the house
29:20the cabinetry in the kitchen and butler's pantry is almost done as well as the custom enclosure for
29:27the electrical panel in the kitchen there's still light fixtures hardware appliances molding and more to
29:34take care of before you girls can get in there to style but it's quite a big day i know i meet the
29:40folks from the preservation society of charleston i am excited and you guys have pulled off quite a
29:46coup you've got the house listed on their registry so that's a great thing what an exciting day this
29:52is absolutely looking forward to this it's one of our first markers in this particular area oh really
29:57yeah and each one has the story of the home on it exactly yeah we cover the architectural as well
30:03as the social and cultural background and the history and context of the neighborhood as well
30:07the history of this house is so cool this property is close to the water on the battery
30:13and in 1915 daisy and charles wilson built this house before selling it to ernest cochran
30:19and his wife virginia ernest was a lawyer and he eventually got appointed by president calvin
30:25coolidge to be a u.s district judge the cochran's then started renting out the house to military
30:31personnel in the 30s and 40s when the city had an influx of servicemen from the charleston navy yard
30:37but the home basically stayed a military residence until the 1980s and other than an addition that
30:43was done in the 90s the inside of the house is basically original the fact that we get to mark
30:48this as a historical site is the bee's knees jim is going to love it he will like it thank you so
30:55much for coming down and sharing your information with us and and this wonderful song
31:00hey dad a lot to do you kids have got 24 hours until the lagos kids show up so you better get
31:19cracking is this a place you got it i got it you don't need me i don't need i love that the last
31:29couple days for all of these projects are the most fun because it's like this puzzle that i get to put
31:35together those are those cups coffee mugs it is a puzzle most the time getting what's in your head
31:42out onto the floor and out of everybody on this planet i have a pretty good idea of your vision
31:47but i never see the details in it i only know the overview so it's always fun to watch you put the
31:54last minute details together i don't think i even know the details until i'm sure that you don't
32:00you assemble a couple of hundred things that all speak different languages and then at the last minute
32:06you figure out how to get them to talk to each other yeah that's a really nice way of putting it
32:12might have just found some more old tall books too that we can put in there
32:16gray yes sir where's chelsea you need her i just need her to be working as hard as i am oh that's
32:23so sweet down there on the floor a hundred years old i should be home in bed so where is chelsea
32:30outside trying to locate the bankette cushions are they lost well it left and then some hours have gone
32:37by and it hasn't arrived what do we think that someone has stolen the bankette cushion we're not
32:43speculating we're just gonna let chelsea handle this wait for the ransom call i can tell by her
32:48pacing she's figuring it out gray yes sir it's time to flip this table guess who got the bankette
32:58delivered you did it yeah i did it good job what's the consensus on the bankette cushion
33:04so it's supposed to have been delivered and it's not but now on its way so chelsea saves the day
33:12you're so welcome all right i'll let you and i lift it up grumpy and gray pull the rug out
33:18i'm gonna pull the rug out from under you rugs are wonderful because they help pull everything
33:23together they really help bring texture i want to try a different rug in the butler's pantry they balance
33:30the colors they bring all the things you need to like pull details from and they bring groundedness
33:36it's kind of beautiful yeah that other one just wasn't right it felt like it was fighting the grain
33:41yeah this one's pretty neutral let's look at the other ones too but i'd like this one great rug not
33:48for this room the other one feels more casual and like welcoming
33:53maybe this could go here i love those there beautiful
34:02you are very good at hanging art yes i know that you're very slow at hanging art but you're very good
34:09sometimes once again a backhanded compliment i appreciate both of their tactics she gets this one
34:15quickly but it gives me heart palpitations he gets it done accurately but hours have gone by
34:26it always works unless it doesn't great job grumpy yeah you're nailing it
34:34oh yeah it's here oh this is exciting here i'll be thankfully the banquet cushion has arrived we got
34:44it in place good job almost done oh we're doing all of our finishing touches it's nice when there's two
34:53cabinets and there's two of us i'm thrilled with the way that it looks and everything is ready for the
34:58lego's grandchildren to come running in here tomorrow
35:11oh my lord they're already here great why did you have to take so long to get here i was here before
35:16you were what are you talking about hi how are you guys wait good good i guess it's a good thing

36:13you love daylight yes this is such a warm welcoming place for our grandchildren the stairs really pop now
36:22and i don't know if you recognize it but we actually brought the chandelier from the dining
36:27room and i thought it looked familiar yes perfect location yeah and we got to utilize the picture railing
36:35and that's one of the reasons that this house got a plaque from the preservation society of charleston
36:41we really appreciate the city doing that too this is great so i can see all kinds of grandchildren's
36:46pictures hanging from the picture rail everything is so tightly coordinated and that wallpaper is

39:29green let's just bring the green back yes yes yes yes yes yes this is spectacular i love this kind
39:35of cup that is so cool you got your dishwasher here oh my gosh there's a top and a bottom drawer
39:42that is amazing and there's your fridge oh my oh that looks like another cabinet and if you remember
39:49the electrical panel for the whole house is in this space oh so we built a shallow cabinet around
39:56it that's the best looking electrical in my entire life and the light in this room i was worried
40:03because we used to have a glass door over there that it'd be a little darker but with windows
40:08surrounding the uh spectacular hearth the day lighting is off the chart and i mean i could just live
40:14in this kitchen all the time you've even got the marble wall here for the greek in us you know as
40:20far as i have a little marble in the house there it's wonderful everybody gathers around the sink it
40:26seems it's a busy place yes there's actually hookups behind the art for a tv so the kids can be in the
