00:00In an interview with Euronews on the morning show Europe Today, EU ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova called on the EU to move forward with the Russian frozen assets debate.
00:11If seized, the assets could secure 140 billion euros reparations loan to Ukraine to fund its war effort.
00:18Very important is to move on the Russian frozen assets. That's what the Commission presented as the three potential avenues how to secure money for Ukraine, which would send an important signal not only to Ukraine, but to Russia as well, that Europe will stay with Ukraine.
00:40Ultimately, it is the Belgian government that holds the key as the host country of the assets depository Euroclear.
00:46It has, however, yet to give the green light.
00:49Belgian Prime Minister Badewever sent a strongly worded letter to the European Commission on Thursday night saying the reparations loan is fundamentally wrong and that he remains unequivocally clear about the dangers.
01:02Diplomatic efforts at the highest echelons continue, but the clock is ticking before EU leaders gather for a summit in December for a crunch decision.
01:10For her part, Matanova echoed this concerns.
01:13Sanctions and deliveries and support to the Ukrainian armed forces and the defence industry are all critical.
01:24You ask what would happen if it doesn't take place, I think the stakes are very high, and not only for Ukraine, but for all of Europe.
01:33Matanova said the Ukrainian economy has been severely impacted by Russian attacks to energy infrastructure, leading to mass blackouts.
01:42The people of Ukraine, she said, are exhausted and want peace, but that it should be a just peace.
