00:00:00She's upstairs with my wife.
00:00:01Okay, someone will be there right away.
00:00:05Hey, hey!
00:00:06Hey, hey!
00:00:08All right!
00:00:10Nice, sis.
00:00:12Nice, girls. Nice.
00:00:14I don't know, I just feel like when these so-called skeptics of any and all religious faiths,
00:00:19spirituality, metaphysics, whatever you want to call it,
00:00:25are tempted to shut the idea out completely.
00:00:27Obviously, I think that it's important that the question be asked,
00:00:31what is the difference between the material that they talk about and study and meditate upon
00:00:38and the spirit which we talk about and study and meditate upon?
00:00:44Is there actually a difference or is it really just a different way of thinking or of seeing?
00:00:52And I'm not so sure that there is a difference.
00:00:55Anyway, these are just, they're some of the ideas that I hope come across in the novel.
00:01:03All right, I'm out of words.
00:01:05I'm sure that's not true.
00:01:07But that does bring us to a close.
00:01:10So I want to thank you all for being here
00:01:11and a very special thanks to Miranda Ruth for making time for us.
00:01:14I need to take this.
00:01:38Excuse me.
00:01:38I just think getting away would be good for her, good for both of us, actually.
00:01:48We've been going at each other a lot lately.
00:01:50And she's interested in Chicago for college, so, you know.
00:01:53Well, I'm not sure how exciting I'd be, but of course I would love to have her.
00:01:59Um, how long?
00:02:01I don't know.
00:02:02A couple of weeks.
00:02:06That would be fine.
00:02:07Um, when were you thinking?
00:02:10Soon as possible.
00:02:14Okay, yeah.
00:02:15Um, yeah, we can make that work.
00:02:17Sure.
00:02:17Opportunity for some literary monopologies.
00:02:22Family.
00:02:24Are you okay?
00:02:25Yes.
00:02:26No.
00:02:27I aim to please, but I don't know how to get there.
00:02:56So I guess that's how I end up here.
00:02:59Pumping poison through my veins.
00:03:03I aim to leave.
00:03:05Find a way out of my own hell.
00:03:08I push and pull and then I tell myself to remember the names.
00:03:14Of the people you met in December.
00:03:19It's surreal.
00:03:22It's true.
00:03:23It's hard to remember.
00:03:25It's just, it's really weird to find your eyes.
00:03:27It's so, it's so.
00:03:30It's so much fun.
00:03:30It's so much fun.
00:03:30It's so much fun.
00:03:31It's so much fun.
00:03:32I feel it's so much fun.
00:03:32It's so much fun.
00:03:34It's so much fun.
00:03:41Oh my God.
00:03:44You grew up.
00:03:46Hey.
00:03:47Hi.
00:03:51Oh, welcome, sweetheart.
00:03:55Thanks.
00:03:56Come on in.
00:03:58How's your flight?
00:03:59Oh, a little bumpy.
00:04:00Yeah.
00:04:01Oh, can I get that?
00:04:02Oh, no, no, no, thanks.
00:04:03I got it.
00:04:04You were very little when you were last here.
00:04:06You probably don't even remember this place.
00:04:08I don't do.
00:04:09Yeah.
00:04:10Uh, you're upstairs.
00:04:13So why don't you come on in?
00:04:14We'll get you settled.
00:04:25And here it is.
00:04:27Oh.
00:04:28It's small.
00:04:29It's cozy.
00:04:31The light is brilliant in the morning.
00:04:33And, uh, a chair in the corner makes for a really nice reading nook.
00:04:37Oh, I don't really read.
00:04:40Well, there's some real gems on the bookshelf if you do decide to give it a go.
00:04:49Do you have Wi-Fi?
00:04:51I do.
00:04:52Uh, Ralph Waldo is the name of it.
00:04:54Okay.
00:04:55And the password is, uh, all caps, uh, Hawthorne, uh, with an E.
00:05:011850.
00:05:03Um, that's the year that the, the scarlet letter, you know.
00:05:07Got it.
00:05:09That's the year the scarlet letter was published.
00:05:12Yeah.
00:05:13Cool.
00:05:14Are you hungry?
00:05:15Uh, yeah, a little.
00:05:16Um, well, just get settled and whenever you're ready, come down and read.
00:05:21Thanks.
00:05:22This was your mom's room, by the way.
00:05:28Hey, I'm just about ready.
00:05:29Um, you can go take a peek out back if you like.
00:05:30I think that's where we're gonna eat lunch.
00:05:31Do you eat potato salad?
00:05:32Oh shit.
00:05:33What?
00:05:34Hey, I'm just about ready.
00:05:52You can go take a peek out back if you like.
00:05:54I think that's where we're going to eat lunch.
00:05:57Do you eat potato salad?
00:05:58Oh, shit.
00:05:59What?
00:06:00Are you vegetarian?
00:06:03I'm sorry.
00:06:04No, I have.
00:06:05I've got more.
00:06:07You're not?
00:06:08No, I'm good.
00:06:09You're so bad.
00:06:09I'm good.
00:06:10I'm sorry.
00:06:11I'm good.
00:06:12I'm good.
00:06:13I'm good.
00:06:13Oh, my God.
00:06:43Your dad told me that you're thinking about coming up here for college.
00:07:09That's exciting.
00:07:10Yeah.
00:07:11Maybe.
00:07:12It depends on where I can get a scholarship.
00:07:15Well, my mom went to DePaul, of course, and that's a good one, and I'm at U of C at University
00:07:22of Chicago, which is where I teach occasionally, although they're a little nuts there, so I
00:07:29might want to avoid that one.
00:07:31Okay.
00:07:32Will do.
00:07:35What about you?
00:07:37How's books?
00:07:40How's books and stuff?
00:07:43Books and stuff are good.
00:07:45I've been doing, actually, a lot of press for this new thing, this novel.
00:07:50What's it called?
00:07:52In the Dawn.
00:07:53What's it about?
00:07:55Oh, really?
00:07:57Well, it's about this woman named Jacqueline, and on her 50th birthday...
00:08:03You sure you want to hear this?
00:08:06Sure.
00:08:07Well, what else are we going to talk about?
00:08:10Good point.
00:08:12So, on her 50th birthday, she starts to become extra sensitive to the sun and starts to
00:08:19affect her relationships, her friendships, her work.
00:08:25Well, I'm not sure how much you really want me to tell you, but...
00:08:30Well, you can tell me all of it.
00:08:33That was no fun.
00:08:35Well, isn't that, like, what you're supposed to do with stories?
00:08:39Well, yeah, but, I mean, when you've worked for two years on the heart of it...
00:08:46Oh, yeah, but I'm not going to read it.
00:08:49Fair enough.
00:08:51Well, come to find out, she's been doing a lot of research on this condition called
00:09:00photophobia.
00:09:01Is that real?
00:09:02It is, but in my version, it's a little heightened.
00:09:06Anyway, so she's doing this research, and then she realizes that it dates back centuries
00:09:13into her own family, and that its original name, Aether amesthesia, actually comes from
00:09:21a great god.
00:09:22So...
00:09:23Oh, you write fantasy.
00:09:24So...
00:09:25Oh, you write fantasy.
00:09:26No, no, I don't write fantasy.
00:09:27A lot of my work has some metaphysical themes and some spiritual themes, but it's basically
00:09:32realism.
00:09:33It's true.
00:09:34Sounds like fantasy.
00:09:35No, no, it's not.
00:09:37It's...
00:09:38So, she decides, then, that she's going to go to Greece to get to the bottom of this.
00:09:44And then when she gets there, she gets into this awful...
00:09:45And then when she gets there, she gets into this awful...
00:09:51It'd be good to see where your mom came from, huh?
00:11:24She must have been eight.
00:11:26It was right after the funeral.
00:11:27She was there when it happened.
00:11:29She was fast asleep, but...
00:11:31Yeah, she was in the house.
00:11:33Jesus.
00:11:36She plays soccer.
00:11:38Whatever will you talk about?
00:11:41That's the thing.
00:11:42I'm scared.
00:11:43She's funny.
00:11:44She seems smart, but...
00:11:46I don't know.
00:11:48Hopefully she likes me.
00:11:50Rest assured.
00:11:50So, okay, where did we leave off?
00:11:56Part two, chapter one, but we can backtrack if you've got any, like, structural...
00:12:02How is our timing?
00:12:03When are you showing this to Jeff?
00:12:04I told him late summer.
00:12:06Oh.
00:12:07Yeah.
00:12:07Right?
00:12:08Well, that'll be fine, because I really think the second half is just more about what can
00:12:11come out than...
00:12:12Right, than any, like, drastic...
00:12:13Right, any drastic changes.
00:12:17But I will say, if we can back it up...
00:12:19I thought we might want to zero in...
00:12:20Well, if we can back it up to the end of part one, I just think it's sort of...
00:12:27You know, it's these two opposing problems that are dividing the book of the way in.
00:12:32The end of part one's characterizations, they're beautiful.
00:12:35I mean, they really are.
00:12:36I mean, but I mentioned it last week.
00:12:38I just think that the information is just being kind of clunkily laid out.
00:12:41Right, which I partially disagree with.
00:12:44Right, but that's why you have come to your brilliant writer friend, Miranda, for her ideas.
00:12:49I have, indeed.
00:12:50Just so we're clear.
00:12:52And we are.
00:12:54So you're starting with this beautiful, steady momentum at the top of part two, with DeAndre
00:13:01on the trail, the journalist.
00:13:03This is the smoothest, most energized passage in this book.
00:13:06And then you do earn, in chapter 12, this breathing space.
00:13:10There's this nice, patient lull that relaxes and speaks to us.
00:13:17But once the journalist...
00:13:18I don't know what his name is.
00:13:19Ernest.
00:13:19Right, right.
00:13:20Once Ernest throws himself off the bridge, leaving DeAndre alone, I think, I think that's
00:13:25when the book is just telling you you need to move.
00:13:27Just move, move, move.
00:13:29So the philosophical tangents in parts two and part three, they probably just need to go.
00:13:35That's my biggest note.
00:13:36I know.
00:13:37I can't, I can't believe that I'm saying that.
00:13:39Who are you and what have you done with Miranda?
00:13:41Right?
00:13:42Wait!
00:13:42Hi, hi, uh, I think I'm lost, where are you trying to be Ravens, Ravenswood, yes,
00:14:12uh, but there's, there's something else. Gardens. Uh, yeah, yeah, that, that's it. East of the bridge,
00:14:19you're actually on the right road, just head straight west a few blocks, you should start to
00:14:24look familiar. Okay, thanks. Thanks. No, I didn't say that the ending wasn't justified, I just said
00:14:40it doesn't currently work. Because of the tangents. Possibly, but it's also possible that it doesn't
00:14:45work despite the tangents. Good Lord. I, hey, hi, sorry, I can go back outside. No, no, no, no,
00:14:53we were, we were just having discourse. Sid, this is my friend Anthony. Hi. Hi, Sid. Anthony is an old
00:15:01writer friend of mine. Old writer friend, how flattering. Old Pulitzer Prize nominated writer
00:15:08friend of mine, how is that? Anthony's a very well-respected journalist, writer of non-fiction,
00:15:14and now he's writing a novel, that's what we were discussing. Now he has to go talk about the
00:15:19election on television. Cool. I'd rather be doing anything else, believe me. Um, I'm gonna go take
00:15:25a shower, smell bad. Okay, there are towels that are right outside the door on the shelf. Nice to meet
00:15:30you, Sid. Nice to meet you, too. See you Friday? Uh, oh, uh, the soiree. I haven't even told you
00:15:38about that yet. All in good time. Yeah. I'm out. Thanks for this. It's really good, Anthony.
00:15:48And you know, my thoughts are, they're my thoughts. It's your book. I know. How's Brandon? Oh, he's
00:16:01fine. He's fine. He's, uh, with his mom this week. Taking him to his first Cubs game for
00:16:06his 15th birthday, but he doesn't know it yet. Oh, he'll love that. I think so. See you Friday. Bye.
00:16:16Bye.

00:19:58revised because they were in magazines or whatever but to be honest I already miss fiction
00:20:05it's just it's so different you know on the one hand you're just trying to lay out the material as
00:20:13elegantly as possible but then on the other hand you're actually you're making the thing and I
00:20:18I suppose that's not actually accurate but I just
00:20:21said

00:22:34Thanks.
00:22:35I was actually going to lay out in the backyard, if that's okay.
00:22:39Um, yeah, absolutely.
00:22:42Cool.
00:22:43Oh, could you put some sunscreen on me?
00:22:46Sure, of course.
00:22:48Thanks.
00:22:49Do you sleep well?
00:22:53Yeah, the bed's super comfy.
00:22:55It is, isn't it?
00:22:56That was mine growing up.
00:22:57Really?
00:22:58Uh-huh.
00:22:59Your mom's wasn't quite as comfy, but she wanted to take it with her anyway.
00:23:06I think it ended up in your old house.
00:23:12So is this where you write all your books?
00:23:18It is, yeah.
00:23:19Mm-hmm.
00:23:20Okay.
00:23:21I think I got you.
00:23:22Is that good?
00:23:23Yep.
00:23:24Thanks.
00:23:25Do you ever wish you moved away, tried other cities?
00:23:41No.
00:23:43Uh-huh.
00:23:46Thanks.
00:24:11Once upon a time.
00:24:41You don't have to stop listening.
00:24:58I was, I'm just getting some fresh air.
00:25:00You mind?
00:25:01No.
00:25:02You wanna lay out with me?
00:25:03Oh, no, thank you.
00:25:04I, um, I don't even think I own a bathing suit.
00:25:07For real?
00:25:08Yeah.
00:25:09No, I don't.
00:25:11Yeah, no.
00:25:12I read some of your stories.
00:25:15You did?
00:25:17The short ones.
00:25:18Oh, God.
00:25:19That was forever ago.
00:25:21What'd you think?
00:25:22I liked them.
00:25:23They didn't seem that old.
00:25:24Well, good.
00:25:25That's the idea.
00:25:26All the characters kinda seem stuck in their own heads.
00:25:29Well, that's part of the interior nature of the form, but I can...
00:25:33And they're either single or divorced or drifting away.
00:25:38Well, Des is happily married.
00:25:40And Joan is dating...
00:25:41I mean, most of them.
00:25:44Huh.
00:25:46You write a lot about religion, like religious people.
00:25:50Yeah, yeah, I guess I do.
00:25:52Like there's that one woman who is a nun or whatever.
00:25:55And then there's the one about the preacher's wife.
00:25:59And then...
00:26:00Don't forget the witch.
00:26:01Yeah, yeah.
00:26:02I was gonna say the one about the witch.
00:26:03Claire's an athlete.
00:26:04I didn't get to Claire.
00:26:05Yeah, she's a tennis player.
00:26:06And, and Des is a scientist.
00:26:09Does the, um, does the religious thing, does it seem like a, um, like a hindrance to you?
00:26:18I mean, I, I don't know if you and your dad...
00:26:20Oh, we don't go to church.
00:26:21No, but it didn't bother me.
00:26:23I mean, I, I think it's interesting that there are people like that.
00:26:26Religious people?
00:26:27Yeah.
00:26:28Yeah.
00:26:29There, there are a lot of them.
00:26:32Are you?
00:26:33I am, yeah.
00:26:35We weren't growing up.
00:26:37Like what kind?
00:26:39Um, well, I go to the Lutheran church over in Andersonville.
00:26:46So you, you really believe in like a heaven and hell and all that?
00:26:51I, I, you know, I don't know.
00:26:53I, um, I believe in grace.
00:26:56I believe in some sort of a, a complete meaning somewhere.
00:27:03I don't really know anything else.
00:27:05So what's the difference then between you and like an agnostic?
00:27:08I just think I, I just believe so very strongly in, in a great unknown somewhere and to deny the, it's complex.
00:27:23Yeah, like a great unknown or whatever, but you really think we're going to see my mom again?
00:27:28You really, really think that?
00:27:35She didn't believe that.
00:27:38Did she?
00:27:58Hey.
00:28:09Hey.
00:28:11You new to town?
00:28:12Hm?
00:28:13Oh, yeah.
00:28:14No, um, I'm visiting my aunt.
00:28:18Where from?
00:28:19South Carolina.
00:28:20Where's your accent?
00:28:22I don't have one.
00:28:24My dad is from New York and I was born in Maryland.
00:28:27We moved down a little.
00:28:29I can hear it in there a little bit.
00:28:31No, you can't.
00:28:32I can. I totally can.
00:28:34But I'm not going to fight with you.
00:28:37I'm Katie.
00:28:39Sit.
00:28:45Hey.
00:28:49I get off in about ten minutes if you want to...
00:28:52I don't know, go for a walk or something?
00:28:55Okay.
00:29:06Hey.
00:29:08Oh, hey.
00:29:10Um...
00:29:12Hi.
00:29:14Uh, nice to see you again.
00:29:16You too.
00:29:18So what have you been doing with yourself?
00:29:21Um, I've just been chilling at my aunt's house.
00:29:25Uh, trying to explore a little bit.
00:29:27I went for a run.
00:29:29Your aunt cool?
00:29:30Yeah!
00:29:31She is.
00:29:32She is a writer.
00:29:33What's your name?
00:29:35Miranda Ruth.
00:29:36No way.
00:29:38You've heard of her?
00:29:39Yeah, she's a big deal.
00:29:41Oh, weird.
00:29:42Cool.
00:29:43Cool.
00:29:44Yeah.
00:29:45Um...
00:29:46She lives in the same house she grew up in.
00:29:49Which is kind of strange.
00:29:51It's a nice house, though.
00:29:53Rad?
00:29:56So, you have your own apartment?
00:29:58That's pretty sweet.
00:29:59Yeah.
00:30:00Right when I hit eighteen, I was out.
00:30:02I live with my brother.
00:30:04Cool.
00:30:05So, South Carolina, huh?
00:30:06Mm-hmm.

00:30:08What?
00:30:09Come on, that's pretty lame.
00:30:10Okay, you're right.
00:30:11It is.
00:30:12Sorry.
00:30:13Um...
00:30:14My dad actually got a job there once my mom died, so...
00:30:16Sorry.
00:30:17How old were you?
00:30:18Like eight.
00:30:19What does your dad do?
00:30:20I don't really know.
00:30:21I don't really know.
00:30:22I don't really know.
00:30:23Financial stuff.
00:30:24You get along?
00:30:25Um...
00:30:26Um...
00:30:27Not really.
00:30:28It's part of the reason why I wanted to get away, honestly.
00:30:29He is, like, always home and he's super depressed, so...
00:30:32Yeah.
00:30:33I hear that.
00:30:34Um...
00:30:35Um...

00:42:24Thanks.
00:42:29Honestly, I don't have much.
00:42:32Except this one dress I used to wear to church.
00:42:35Wanna wear that?
00:42:37No offense.
00:42:38It's a little...
00:42:39Yep.
00:42:40Thought so.
00:42:41Sorry.
00:42:42Dressy-wise, I don't really have anything else.
00:42:45Except the tux I wore to prom.

00:45:43Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, I'ma bring it on home
00:45:49When I was just about ten years old, I walked up to the prospect of a cleaner soul
00:45:55And I clung tight to the preacher, bro, brought down to the pulpit with my mic exposed
00:46:00He was my uncle, and it was like the first day of the month
00:46:04I really had a thirst to pray, what a start
00:46:07My mama just cried and cried, filled up a loving chest with pride
00:46:11And I, I buckled, I gave it all to him, pull a scent with a grin in my childish ways
00:46:17I chuckled, paved the way for grandma's sin when I couldn't sit with my wife and wife
00:46:22Wonderful, now how long were you there?
00:46:24About a week, about a week
00:46:26It's relaxing, it's such a great time of year

00:48:13Yeah!
00:48:14Thank you!
00:48:16No, it's my first time.
00:48:19Look at our city. It's a beautiful city.
00:48:21It's been drowning from shame.
00:48:28The truth of the matter is from the shadows it was staring me in the face.
00:48:39Where I lost myself in the desert of the hearts of my tarnishing delays.
00:48:51We were rivals. She was a prosecutor. I was a DA.
00:48:56That's so cool.
00:48:58But we should also add that I was married.
00:49:00Yes, so in any case, we knew we had to wait until one of us retired so we could successfully make a go at it.
00:49:06You worked on the same case?
00:49:09The case is...
00:49:11That's incredible.
00:49:13So you were both married to men?
00:49:15Yes, I was a widow when we met. I was a widow early on.
00:49:18Betty was married, got divorced later. That's where he came from.
00:49:22So you liked it and you didn't?
00:49:25What, being married to men?
00:49:28Are you asking if we liked Dick?
00:49:31Um...
00:49:33I did.
00:49:34She didn't.
00:49:35I do.
00:49:36I did.
00:49:37She didn't.
00:49:38I do.
00:49:40Dick is not terrible, is he?
00:49:43It's not terrible. It is like the opposite of terrible.
00:49:58So what are you into, hon?
00:50:04Oh, um...
00:50:06I...
00:50:07like...
00:50:09everything.
00:50:15And he goes outside to go on his little date, you know, to the dance.
00:50:20And in two seconds, he comes back in and he's like,
00:50:22Mama, her parents left. We need a ride.
00:50:27I don't think that's exactly what happened, but whatever.
00:50:30Oh, shut up.
00:50:32I drove you on all your dates.
00:50:34Yes, you did. And I love you, Mama. Thank you.
00:50:37I could drive you, too.
00:50:39If you want to go somewhere.
00:50:40Oh, yeah.
00:50:42Oh.
00:50:44Wow.
00:50:50Where's Jay?
00:50:51Thought he was coming home.
00:50:53He got himself a date.
00:50:54Really?
00:50:55Mm-hmm.
00:50:58Is some girl work?
00:51:00Weird.
00:51:01You're supposed to hang out.
00:51:03How are you?
00:51:07Fine. How are you?
00:51:08How are you?
00:51:09I'm good.
00:51:11I'm sorry about making fun of you in front of your friend the other day.
00:51:15I, like, picked you up and spun you around.
00:51:18So what are you up to tonight?
00:51:20Don't know.
00:51:22Well, let me know if you want to hang out.
00:51:25Uh...
00:51:26Okay.
00:51:27This is a story about a woman who burned her own house down.
00:51:39Not true.
00:51:40No, sir.
00:51:42This is very true.
00:51:43Okay.
00:51:44This is very, very true.
00:51:461968.
00:51:47Cincinnati, Ohio.
00:51:48No, no, no.
00:51:49No cell phones.
00:51:50Oh, sorry.
00:51:52Sweet.
00:51:53Sweet Cincinnati.
00:51:56Dolores, mother of four, worked for the Ohio Insurance Company.
00:52:01Husband left her for another woman.
00:52:05Left her alone in that house with four children.
00:52:09Three boys, one girl.
00:52:10One day, someone knocks on her door.
00:52:13She opens it to find a very nice, seeming young man standing there.
00:52:18He is new to town, works for the paper, looking to rent a place.
00:52:22Money is tight for them, see?
00:52:25So she moves into her daughter's bedroom, gives the nice young man her own room,
00:52:29just till he gets off the ground here.
00:52:31Good Christian man, not a concern in the world.
00:52:34Couple of days later, she catches word a woman in Columbus has been murdered.
00:52:41By a devil worshiper.
00:52:45And he got away.
00:52:47Oh dear.
00:52:48Oh, don't worry, I don't think it's true.
00:52:50What did you say?
00:52:53I said, uh, yeah, you know, I think I read about that somewhere.
00:52:57Yeah, she's just pregnant, so she's really sensitive.
00:53:05Oh!
00:53:07Oh!
00:53:08Oh, oh!
00:53:09Oh!
00:53:11I did just came out.
00:53:18So what is it going to be?
00:53:19No, it's thicket.
00:53:20there's a certain slant of light
00:53:26winter afternoons that oppresses
00:53:28like the heft of cathedral tunes
00:53:31heavenly hurt it gives us
00:53:34we can find no scar
00:53:36but internal difference
00:53:38where the meanings are
00:53:41none may teach it
00:53:43any
00:53:43tis the seal despair
00:53:46an imperial affliction
00:53:49sent us of the air
00:53:50when it comes the landscape
00:53:52glistens
00:53:53shadows hold their breath
00:53:55when it goes
00:53:57tis like the distance
00:53:59on the look of death
00:54:01emily dickinson
00:54:05i have a memory
00:54:08an impression when i read this poem
00:54:09you never get the feeling
00:54:11when you're a child
00:54:13the end of august
00:54:15when the first little chill comes in the evening
00:54:17and you're thinking
00:54:18school starts
00:54:21end of summer blues
00:54:24behind what we think of
00:54:25as the russian menace
00:54:26lies what we do not wish to face
00:54:29when they regard a negro
00:54:30reality
00:54:31the fact that life
00:54:33is tragic
00:54:34life is tragic
00:54:36simply because the earth turns
00:54:38and the sun inexorably rises and sets
00:54:41and one day
00:54:42for each of us
00:54:44the sun will go down
00:54:45for the last last time
00:54:47perhaps the whole root of our trouble
00:54:50the human trouble
00:54:51is that
00:54:53we will sacrifice
00:54:54all the beauty of our lives
00:54:56we'll imprison ourselves
00:54:58in totems
00:54:58taboos
00:55:00crosses
00:55:01blood sacrifices
00:55:02steeples
00:55:03mosques
00:55:04races
00:55:04armies
00:55:05flags
00:55:06nations
00:55:07in order to deny
00:55:08the fact of death
00:55:10the only fact
00:55:11we have
00:55:12it seems to me
00:55:14that one ought to rejoice
00:55:16in the fact of death
00:55:17ought to decide indeed
00:55:19to earn one's death
00:55:21by confronting with passion
00:55:23the conundrum of life
00:55:24I sat looking off
00:55:25across the country
00:55:26watching the sun go down
00:55:27the curly grass about us
00:55:29was on fire now
00:55:31the bark of the oaks
00:55:33turned red as copper
00:55:34there was a shimmer of gold
00:55:36on the brown river
00:55:37out in the stream
00:55:39the sandbars glittered
00:55:40like glass
00:55:41and the light trembled
00:55:42in the willow thickets
00:55:43as if little flames
00:55:46were leaping among them
00:55:47the breeze sank
00:55:50into stillness
00:55:51the ravine
00:55:52as he heard the snow
00:55:53falling faintly
00:55:54through the universe
00:55:55and faintly falling
00:55:56like the descent
00:55:57of their last end
00:55:58upon all the living
00:56:00and the dead
00:56:01James Joyce
00:56:04the dead
00:56:04thank you
00:56:07hey
00:56:12what the fuck man
00:56:13I was wondering
00:56:15if you wanted to go
00:56:16and sell the balcony
00:56:17it's not a bed
00:56:18it's a couch

00:56:24Kev
00:56:25get out of my room
00:56:29I thought I'd share
00:56:33a little bit of nature
00:56:34from Ralph Waldo Emerson
00:56:36on this lovely summer evening
00:56:38to speak truly
00:56:41few adult persons
00:56:42can see nature
00:56:43at least they have
00:56:46a very superficial scene
00:56:47the sun
00:56:49the sun illuminates
00:56:50only the eye
00:56:51of the man
00:56:52but shines
00:56:52into the eye
00:56:53and the heart
00:56:54of the child
00:56:55the lover of nature
00:56:58is he
00:56:59whose inward
00:56:59and outward senses
00:57:00are still truly
00:57:02adjusted
00:57:02to each other
00:57:03who has retained
00:57:05the spirit of infancy
00:57:06even into the era
00:57:08of manhood
00:57:08his intercourse
00:57:11with heaven
00:57:12and earth
00:57:13becomes
00:57:13part of his daily food
00:57:15crossing a bear
00:57:18common
00:57:18in snow puddles
00:57:20at twilight
00:57:20under a clouded sky
00:57:22without having
00:57:23in my thoughts
00:57:23any occurrence
00:57:24of a special good fortune
00:57:26I have enjoyed
00:57:27a perfect exhilaration
00:57:29I am glad
00:57:31to the brink
00:57:32of fear
00:57:33in the woods
00:57:35too
00:57:35a man
00:57:36casts off
00:57:37his years
00:57:38and at
00:57:39at what
00:57:40period
00:57:42soever
00:57:43of life
00:57:43is always
00:57:45a child
00:57:46in the woods
00:57:49is perpetual

01:14:40Who are you talking to?
01:14:44Oh

01:14:55Let me see
01:14:56Oh shit
01:14:59Yes you did
01:15:02Okay
01:15:02Did I?
01:15:05No you're good
01:15:06Okay
01:15:06Wait
01:15:19Wait
01:15:21So
01:15:38So
01:15:50I had a brother, Devin, he was like 12 years older than me, he had a lot of mental problems
01:16:09or whatever, just like a lot of issues, and he and my mom and my dad used to get into
01:16:17these really big fights. They thought about sending him away to military school or whatever,
01:16:26but I never did. Anyway, one weekend when I was really little, my dad was away, and after
01:16:44I'd gone to bed, my brother and my mom got into this really big fight, and he shot her.
01:16:56Oh my god. And then himself.
01:17:03Somehow I slept through the whole thing, and the neighbors found them before I could,
01:17:19so I was protected. Anyway, that's the story.
01:17:49Feel free to relax in here until we're ready for you. We'll probably hold the house for
01:17:53about five or ten minutes just so it can fill up so you have plenty of time, you can help
01:17:56yourself to some snacks, and if you have any questions, I'll be right up the hall.
01:17:59Thank you, honey. This is interesting.
01:18:06Do you want some?
01:18:08Hell yeah.
01:18:10Sure am, Nick. Aunt Miranda, you're so big time.
01:18:14I'm not that big. Well, maybe. Just a little.
01:18:20Hello? What? Okay. Are you sure? It's okay. Uh, well, I'll come home soon.
01:18:41Why don't we start with a simple question?
01:18:45Are there any simple questions? Do those exist?
01:18:49Where do your ideas come from?
01:18:53Oh, you would think that I would have a quick, straightforward answer to that by now, but I don't.
01:19:02You know, I'm tempted to give the standard answer, that they come from everywhere.
01:19:09They come from different places. A feeling, a relative, a place, other works of art, a concern, but...
01:19:23What kind of concern would give way to an idea for a book?
01:19:26A concern of the spirit, I guess?
01:19:33A kind of unrest.
01:19:38But I suppose if I'm being completely honest, I can't say that in their essence that they come from outside at all.
01:19:52They come from me. They are me. Each one of them, sort of me, reformed.
01:20:11And I was working at the library when I discovered your book of short stories.
01:20:17The title of which just fell out of my head. I'm sorry.
01:20:22The Valley of the Shadows.
01:20:23That's the one. Thank you.
01:20:26There was something about those women that gave me strength.
01:20:31How thoughtful, how engaged with the bigger picture or something.
01:20:37Going through life with such patience and curiosity, despite seemingly relentless hardship.
01:20:48It reminded me of the women in my life, who I love a lot.
01:20:53My grandmother recently...
01:20:59I don't have a question, apparently.
01:21:01I guess I just wanted to thank you for honoring them.
01:21:05Well, thank you. That means a lot.
01:21:09Anyone else? We have time for one more.
01:21:27Hi. Hello, young lady.
