00:00Here are today's top stories. First, as protests over police brutality and systemic racism continue
00:04across the country, the Civil War epic Gone with the Wind has been pulled from HBO Max.
00:09THR's Neha Joy has more. Gone with the Wind phase renewed scrutiny for its controversial
00:13depiction of black people and its positive view of slavery after 12 Years a Slave screenwriter
00:18John Ridley published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. Ridley called on HBO Max to
00:24consider removing Gone with the Wind from its platform as the film had its own unique problem,
00:28writing,
00:29It doesn't just fall short with regard to representation. It's a film that glorifies the
00:33antebellum South. It's a film that, when it's not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to
00:38perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color. However, HBO Max has said that
00:44it does plan to eventually bring the film back to the service.
00:47Next, Paramount Network has pulled the plug on the show Cops for Good. The Viacom CBS-owned cable
00:52channel had removed the long-running show from its schedule in the wake of nationwide protests
00:57following the police-involved death of George Floyd on May 25th. Now, the network says it's
01:01dropping the show altogether. A network spokesperson said,
01:04Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don't have any current or future plans for it to return.
01:09Cops has faced scrutiny over the years for the way it depicts suspects and police tactics.
01:14Nava DuVernay has been elected to represent the director's branch of the Academy of Motion Picture
01:18Arts and Sciences on its board of governors, part of a historic wave that establishes new records
01:23for women and people of color on the 54-person board. DuVernay's directorial credits include
01:28Selma, the documentary 13th, and A Wrinkle in Time, among others. When DuVernay's 2014 film Selma
01:34was denied Best Director and Best Actor Oscar nominations, it partially fueled the hashtag
01:39OscarsSoWhite controversy, resulting in significant changes at the Academy.
01:43It is unacceptable that they use their power to keep us voiceless. Those that have gone before us say
01:51no more. DuVernay is among six people who were elected to the board of governors for the first
01:56time via elections that ran from June 1st to June 5th. For more on all these stories, head to THR.com.
