Theo Rossi chats with THR at the premiere for 'The Penguin' and reveals how cold the sets were due to Colin Farrell being covered in prosthetics. Plus, he shares what sets 'The Penguin' apart from other villain stories.
00:00Give us a little rundown of your character and his relationship to Penguin.
00:04My relationship is to Sophia Falcone. I'm with her.
00:08And I'm, you know, if this was divided in sides of Oz and Sophia,
00:12I am team Sophia all the way and I'm with her.
00:15You know, we first pop up 10 years before in Arkham in the flashbacks with her and I.
00:20And then it's really a cheerleading, supportive, her doctor trying to get her to be the,
00:28supporting her and being the worst human being possible.
00:32Well, it's so crazy because I feel like even in recent days,
00:35a lot of people have been likening the show to The Sopranos.
00:38So what have you been making of those comparisons?
00:40I think it's the best show that's ever been made.
00:42So that's, I'll take that comparison all day.
00:45It's better than being compared to many others.
00:49Now, I don't want to slight any shows because they're all really hard to make.
00:52But Sopranos is the greatest show ever made.
00:55So if five people say that on the planet, we've won.
00:58Right, right.
00:59I mean, yeah, it's arguably one of the greatest shows on top.
01:01Yeah, I think the HBO thing.
01:02I think the gangster.
01:03I think Gotham be in New York.
01:05I think it all works.
01:06I think that Oz kind of looks like Tony a little.
01:10Yeah.
01:10They have similarities.
01:11So I think there's a lot of that.
01:13The mother stuff.
01:14There's a lot of similarities.
01:16The psychiatrist.
01:18Yes.
01:19I'm discovering this as we go.
01:20I know.
01:21You're like, actually, you know what?
01:22I agree.
01:22Hold on.
01:22Actually, I agree with all of it.
01:25Well, I know that when you look at Colin, he completely just transforms in this series.
01:31What was your first reaction when you saw him step out onto the set?
01:34We met later in the series because our characters don't run into each other until later.
01:40And when I did, it was fascinating because it's a lot of work.
01:45That's a tremendous amount of makeup.
01:47The sets were freezing because he's sweating in that much makeup.
01:52I heard the set was really, really cold.
01:53About 50 degrees.
01:54I had a winter coat on in June.
01:56Oh, my gosh.
01:56Yeah.
01:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:57So you just keep as warm as you can and you do the best you can in the frozen temperatures.
02:03Yeah.
02:03For sure.
02:04Well, I know there's a lot of super villain stories that are out there.
02:07But what's one thing that people would be surprised to learn about Penguin's story in this series?
02:12Sophia.
02:13I mean, the rise of Sophia Falcone, the rise of that character.
02:17And if you know the comic and you know whatever, she really takes it to a level that I just think is absolutely extraordinary.
02:22And to have people like Julian Rush, the doctor, you know, this strange character lifting her up to do what she's got to do from Arkham to 10 years later in the present day.
02:34I think learning about her is going to be the thing that's going to surprise a lot of people.
02:39What super villain story would you love to see a spinoff of next, particularly in Gotham?
02:45Probably the Dollmaker.
02:49It's a really strange, obscure character who takes people's skin and wears it.
02:55Yeah.
02:56So people, ones that people maybe haven't really seen come to life yet.
03:01Yeah, Clayface, the Dollmaker.
03:03There's a lot of strange ones that are out there.
03:05Not the basics like Riddler, Joker, the ones that have been done.
03:08More obscure.
03:09More obscure.
03:10Yeah.
03:10There's some really cool, obscure characters.
