Colin Farrell, a master of physical transformations and accents, shares with THR at 'The Penguin' premiere the "anchor words" that help him maintain Penguin's strong New York accent.

00:00I know a lot of people are talking about the prosthetics and the physical transformation.

00:03I just wanted to praise your accents.

00:05I feel like your accents are always so spot on.

00:07So the New York accent as well, was there a phrase or a word that you had to say to

00:11kind of get in and out of it, or was it relatively easy?

00:13For some reason, gefilte fish became an anchor.

00:16If the accent was beginning to go up.

00:18My dialect coach, Jessica Drake, she has a library of thousands of accents from all over

00:22the world, dating back to the 30s and 40s.

00:25So when we're preparing for something, we go in based on where the character's from

00:28and you have a listen to four or five different recordings from around that region.

00:31And then you'll narrow zone into something that you think is good energetically, not

00:34just the sound, yada, yada.

00:36And so there was a gentleman who was a manager of an apartment complex in the 80s.

00:40He was older.

00:41He sounded about 60 or so.

00:43And he talked a lot about gefilte fish.

00:46And so whenever my accent started to go, she'd call me back and I'd say gefilte fish.

00:49And that would kind of, it was just a little trick to, but thanks for the props.
