00:00Is this thing a dog?
00:02A dog? What kind of dog do you think it is, mate?

00:06Oh my god, is it a werewolf?
00:08Yo, they sent me this to a werewolf? Yo, let me help!
00:10As filmmaker James Gunn gets ready to release his new DC movie, The Suicide Squad,
00:15the director is opening up about his 2018 Marvel firing,
00:18his eventual rehiring a year later, and his feelings around cancel culture.
00:22Back in 2018, Gunn was fired as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
00:26after a number of conservative personalities resurfaced old tweets
00:30in which the filmmaker made jokes about pedophilia and rape.
00:33In a new interview with the New York Times,
00:35Gunn revealed that it was Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige
00:38who ultimately delivered the news that he had been let go.
00:41Gunn recalled,
00:55Gunn remembers feeling like his career was over.
00:57In a statement released the day of his firing,
00:59the director said that he understood the studio's decision
01:02and regretted posting the old tweets because, quote,
01:04they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.
01:08Following the news, the Guardians of the Galaxy themselves
01:10were among many who came out in support of Gunn,
01:13even penning a letter advocating for his reinstatement.
01:16He eventually was rehired in March 2019.
01:19So we're saving the galaxy again?
01:21Yep.
01:22When asked whether he felt he was a victim of, quote,
01:24cancel culture, Gunn explained,
01:26It's such a bigger issue than that.
01:28Because cancel culture also is people like Harvey Weinstein,
01:31who should be canceled.
01:32People who have gotten canceled and then remain canceled.
01:35Most of those people deserve that.
01:37He continued,
01:38The paparazzi are not just the people on the streets.
01:40They're the people combing Twitter for past sins.
01:42All of that sucks.
01:43It's painful.
01:44But some of it is accountability.
01:46And that part of it is good.
01:47It's just about finding that balance.
