The Kelly Clarkson Show - Season 7 Episode 42 - Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen
Transcript
00:00Welcome to the Kelly Clarkson Show!
00:13Today we are starting with the Kelly O'Kee encore, first performed by one of the greatest singer-songwriters out there today.
00:19I was honored to have her join me for a whole hour of songs and stories earlier this year.
00:23Here is me and my band, y'all, with Sarah McLachlan's Building a Mystery.
00:30When you come out at night, it's where the energy comes.
00:40And the dark sides lie, and the vampires roll.
00:47You stretch your roster where you're suicide poor.
00:52And a cross from faith that died before Jesus came.
01:01A building of mystery.
01:05You walk up screaming aloud.
01:12A prayer from your secret God.
01:16Your feet off our fears.
01:18And hold back your tears.
01:21Oh, give us a tantrum.
01:24And I know it all wins.
01:28Just when we need one, when the evenings fill.
01:34You're a beautiful, a beautiful dumb man.
01:40You're setting up your razor wide stride.
01:47Yeah, you're working.
01:49Building a mystery.
01:52Holding on.
01:55Holding it in.
01:58Yeah, you're working.
02:01Building a mystery.
02:04One more time.
02:22Good luck in my band, y'all.
02:25All right.
02:27Our first guests today have been described as American treasures by every single person in America.
02:35It's a fact.
02:36Look it up.
02:37One is an Oscar and Golden Globe winning actress.
02:39The other is a multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor.
02:42And this year, they became the first couple ever to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award,
02:47which honors media professionals whose philanthropic work has had a lasting impact.
02:52They're incredible people.
02:53You can see them in season two of Man on the Inside.
02:57It's available now on Netflix.
02:58Everybody give it up for Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson.
03:02Go, go, go, go.
03:06Alright, until the end of política, that's what I'm hearing from her.
03:08Go, go!
03:10Look.
03:11Go!
03:12Come on, she's strong.
03:13Go, go.
03:14Go, go, go.
03:15Go, go.
03:17Go.
03:18Go, go.
03:20Go, go, go, go.
03:22Go.
03:23Go.
03:24Go.
03:25Go, go.
03:26Go, go.
03:27Go, go, go!
03:29Go.
03:30We're kind of in the same color palette today.
03:35Oh, we are.
03:36I love that.
03:37I love having y'all here.
03:38Congrats on season two.
03:40Yes.
03:41Yes.
03:42You play love interest this season, yeah?
03:45Yes.
03:46Okay, what's happening with your characters this season?
03:48Or you're new this season, but yeah.
03:50I have solved the case.
03:52It's nine months later.
03:54We're in a different location, obviously.
03:56We're in a liberal arts college, and I am hot on the trail of many different suspects,
04:05and I bump into Mary, and all my talents as a private investigator go flying out the window
04:13because I'm just smitten.
04:14Yeah.
04:15Obviously.
04:16Look at that smile.
04:17So what's your character like?
04:18You're new this season, yeah?
04:19I'm new this season, and I'm a professor who long ago was a rock star.
04:27I opened for Fleetwood Mac, and I had a song that was quite famous, but I became a sort
04:38of one-hit wonder, and so I end up being this professor at this college.
04:43And I'm also one of his suspects.
04:45Okay.
04:46Yeah.
04:47It gets even juicier.
04:48Okay, okay.
04:49You weren't in season one, so how did you get involved?
04:51I mean, it was just this little miracle because I used to run lines with him, and I do confess
04:57that when I would run lines with him, I was always thinking, this show is so funny and so
05:02good.
05:03I wish I was on it, but I had to, like, not lay that on him.
05:06You know, tried not to.
05:07Yeah.
05:08And then finally, at the end of season one, Mike Schur, who's the brilliant creator of
05:16that show and Parks and Rec and The Good Place, he said, you know, we are thinking about a part
05:23for you in season two, and it took everything not to just scream right in his face.
05:29You're trying to be casual about it?
05:30You're like, oh, that would be cool, I guess.
05:31Oh, cool.
05:32I'll try to fit it in.
05:33So, no, I love his work and the writers and the vibe of the show, and needless to say,
05:41he's my favorite actor, so it was pretty great.
05:44Y'all are so cute as a couple.
05:47It's so cute.
05:48We'll try to tamp it down.
05:49No.
05:50No.
05:51Shine.
05:52I love it.
05:53Shine.
05:54I want to talk about this.
05:55I said it right when you came out.
05:56Look, I'm a newly found fan of Jessie Buckley.
05:58Like, she's incredible.
05:59Wow.
06:00And it's coming out.
06:01It's so good.
06:02As a singer as well, and you wrote a song that she sang.
06:05Yes, I wrote it with Caitlin Smith, who you love.
06:08I love Caitlin Smith.
06:09I know.
06:10So we wrote it together, and we just, we loved the experience, and then she just knocked
06:18it.
06:19If you watch the movie Wild Rose, you'll see our song at the end of it.
06:23No, you're such a great songwriter.
06:24But it was Kate York.
06:24Yeah.
06:25The three of us wrote that.
06:26And you wrote a song in this series as well.
06:28She won, you know, a Critics' Choice Award for that.
06:31She tied with Elton John for that song.
06:33I didn't know that.
06:35Which is...
06:36Oh!
06:37Thank you for bragging.
06:38I didn't know that.
06:39I should have known that.
06:41That's incredible.
06:42I just liked it.
06:43I didn't even...
06:44You didn't even need an award.
06:45It was really badass.
06:46Yeah.
06:47Hey, if you like it so much, you want to sing it someday?
06:49No.
06:50I know.
06:51I literally was like, that's a karaoke in the making.
06:52I was very excited about it.
06:53But you also wrote for this show as well.
06:56I did.
06:57And you usually don't sing it, right?
06:58You usually give the song.
06:59I am...
07:00Well, I did sing in this one because supposedly I was a singer when I was young.
07:05But anyway, we had fun, and this song turned out really great.
07:08And I wrote it with Troy Verges.
07:10Tell them the name of the band, which I love.
07:12Oh, the band.
07:13Lavender Highway.
07:14I love Lavender Highway.
07:15I love Lavender Highway.
07:16It's so 70s.
07:17It's so 70s and perfect.
07:18And I was like, this should actually be a band.
07:20I know.
07:21Yeah.
07:22And for a gift, Mike Schur and Morgan Sackett, the producer, gave me this amazing Woodstock
07:29poster with my face on it and all the bands that were playing at Woodstock.
07:34Oh, my God.
07:35Including my own.
07:36It was the coolest thing.
07:37It's, you know...
07:38That's incredible.
07:39We really are our characters.
07:40Yeah.
07:41We kind of are.
07:42Well, I'm a little more Mona than I even like to admit.
07:45Yeah.
07:46I mean, she's unusual.
07:47Yeah.
07:48But how do you describe...
07:49My character describes her, I walk across the street, I wait for the light, I go on the
07:54crosswalk.
07:55Mona does cartwheels into the traffic.
07:57That's kind of what she is.
07:58Why not?
07:59Yeah.
08:00I know it's good for them.
08:01Okay.
08:02Let's take a quick break.
08:03As always, we have someone in the audience to help us out.
08:05Hi, Kelly.
08:06I'm Joanna.
08:07It's incredible to be here with you, Ted, and Mary.
08:10Ted, not to date the both of us, but I've been watching you since 1975 in The Doctors.
08:15And Mary, I've been hooked on your work since the dead of winter, which I watch every
08:19year.
08:20When I think of both of you, I think of great actors and great people with the Bob Hope Humanitarian
08:25award is proof.
08:26Stay here.
08:27Kelly, Ted, and Mary have more coming next.
08:40I'm a private investigator.
08:41What?
08:42I'm an undercover private investigator.
08:44I recorded our first kiss with a spy camera, but I deleted it.
08:49It wasn't pervy.
08:50Also, I stole your purse for the case.
08:53And I feel bad about it.
08:55Because even though we just met, I like you.
08:58And I don't want to lie to you.
09:00Anymore.
09:01Anyway, this is all under the heading of, I'm an undercover private investigator.
09:07All the words.
09:10We are back with Ted Danson and Mary's Team Birdhood.
09:14That was a look at their Netflix series of May on the Inside.
09:17Season two is out now.
09:19I love the show.
09:20I do hear that y'all do something very cute on set, and I want to know why.
09:24You whisper to each other, like right before you, is this a lie or real?
09:27No, it's true.
09:28Okay.
09:29It's true.
09:30Just did it.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Yeah, we did it right before we came out here.
09:33What do you say?
09:34Can I know?
09:35Well, I studied, when I was young, I studied with Sandy Meisner, who was a great acting
09:39teacher, kind of maybe the most famous one in America, at the neighborhood playhouse here.
09:46And he studied this same method.
09:48And so when we want to connect and not get distracted by everything else, we just say,
09:53Sandy.
09:54And that was, that was, that connects us.
09:57You can't fake being there.
09:58You either are there or you're not.
10:00Yeah.
10:01And so many times you're tempted to go, oh, let me show you how good I am.
10:05You know, or some, some version of not being there.
10:08So that was kind of a...
10:09But he was my teacher.
10:10I adored him and it grounds me and it grounds him too.
10:15So.
10:16It is amazing to watch.
10:17I've been on sets and it's like people will just be talking and da, da, da, da.
10:22And then all of a sudden it's like some serious scene.
10:24And I'm like, that's an incredible gift.
10:26Like that y'all can do that.
10:27Like it's, it's, I mean, it's acting, I get it.
10:30But like, it's, it's just an incredible gift when it's done well.
10:33But now we know, we just got to say Sandy.
10:35I think people who talk and then start to sing are kind of...
10:38Yeah, we kind of are impressed with that.
10:40I thought you were going to say, I think people that talk and then can stop at some point.
10:44No.
10:45And I was like, you're funny.
10:46I like you.
10:47Okay.
10:48So wait, I hear, and thank you.
10:49Um, I, I hear that you got a note specifically that, um, was it to act less in love?
10:55Yeah.
10:56Is it?
10:57Which, come on.
10:58It's just like fake.
11:00It's so beautiful.
11:01Like you got a note to be...
11:03It's a note about me being too, you know.
11:06Yeah.
11:07Too in love.
11:08That I am madly in love with my wife too.
11:09Yeah.
11:10And a note that I'm a bad actor, that I was playing the end of the story instead of,
11:14you know, the beginning.
11:15Yeah.
11:16So it...
11:17Well, the lines get blurry, I assume.
11:18Yeah.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Yeah.
11:21And this year, Mary and Ted were the first couple to get the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award
11:25at the Emmys.
11:26And they both honored their parents and their speech.
11:30How do you feel like your parents impacted you?
11:33You know, when we were told we got this award, if we didn't feel that deserving, to be honest,
11:39it's, it's not how you think of yourself.
11:41You just, you do it too.
11:43You just do what you can.
11:44Yeah.
11:45To raise awareness and help people.
11:47And, um, but, uh, I thought about where, so where does this desire come from?
11:54And I thought about how my dad was a freight train conductor.
11:57Um, one time we were talking and I realized he's supposed to throw the, they, they used
12:03to call them hobos off the train, right?
12:06The people who are, you know, down on their luck and trying to get from one place to another,
12:11he was supposed to make them get off the train.
12:14And he, he, he followed all the rules at work, but not that one, because he just said,
12:20I can't kick a guy when he's down.
12:22I just can't do that.
12:23And, and that was, that went in my head as a very young child.
12:28It was like, yeah, we don't treat people that way.
12:31You don't kick somebody when they're down, you know, you try to lift them up.
12:34And, and that was just, he didn't do under others.
12:37And nobody called him a humanitarian, but he was just a good person, you know?
12:42Yeah.
12:43Amazing dad.
12:44Yeah.
12:45What about your parents?
12:46How were you impacted?
12:47Yeah.
12:48My mom went to church a lot and so that an Episcopal church, and that was very much part
12:52of our upbringing.
12:53My father was an archeologist.
12:55So.
12:56That's cool.
12:57All over the Southwest.
12:58It was cool, but you're sitting there realizing there's a lot that comes before you as you,
13:03you know, you see these skulls or other, you know, artifacts from thousands of years
13:09ago.
13:10So the message that he actually said, but I kind of walked away with was this, this time
13:15is not just about you.
13:17It's about your stewardship of what you've been given.
13:20Yeah.
13:21I think that played on me later in life.
13:23Mm-hmm.
13:24And then you have the miracle of grandchildren and you really want to leave the world a better
13:29place.
13:30Yeah.
13:31And it sort of speeds up your activism.
13:32That's what's happened to me.
13:33I will tell you, it is very different conversations with my friends that have no children.
13:38They're just like, they'll be fine.
13:40I'm like, okay, okay.
13:42Somebody's got to care, y'all.
13:44Everybody give it up for Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson.
13:48Season two of their show, A Man on the Inside is streaming now on Netflix.
13:53We've got an organization helping unhoused youth next.
13:56Welcome back, everybody.
14:13The holidays are almost here.
14:15It's a time of year we try to put even more effort into highlighting organizations doing
14:19great work year-round.
14:20Since 1972, Covenant House has provided immediate and long-term support and housing for youth facing
14:27homelessness across North America.
14:291.5 million to date, so they're incredible.
14:33It's all about providing unconditional love, deep respect, and relentless support to young
14:38people in need.
14:39They're able to do this work in part thanks to private donations and great partners like
14:43Ulta Beauty.
14:44A few days ago, one of the youth ambassadors for Covenant House met up with some friends
14:48of our show at Ulta Beauty to get ready for the holidays.
14:50Take a look.
14:56Today's truly going to be such an amazing day, and I am so excited.
15:00And I'm excited to be surrounded by some beautiful people.
15:03First up, this is Corey Morris.
15:04Hello.
15:05And he's a part of our Kelly Clarkson glam team.
15:07And Corey, I'm just going to say, hair stylist to the stars.
15:10Yes.
15:12And this is Leora, and she is the youth ambassador from Covenant House.
15:17We are so happy to have you here with us.
15:19I'm so happy to be here with you guys.
15:21Oh, we get a hug.
15:23I am so excited because the Kelly Clarkson Show and Ulta Beauty are teaming up together
15:28to spread some holiday cheer to everyone at the Covenant House.
15:31I know the holidays can be really tough, so what does that mean for the residents of the Covenant House?
15:36It was tough for me.
15:37I didn't really care for the holidays, but Covenant House changed that for me.
15:41Oh, I see the smile.
15:42So now you love the holidays.
15:43Yes.
15:44Now I love the holidays.
15:45Covenant House gave me my voice back, and they taught me how to use it.
15:49I wish I would have known about Covenant House when I was a kid because I, too, was kicked out of the house.
15:54Being kicked out as a teen and not having a home was pretty devastating.
15:58I mean, if it wasn't for the family that took me in, I don't think I'd be who I am today.
16:03When you grow up with nothing, even the small acts of kindness are a miracle.
16:08It's the holidays, and it's all about giving.
16:11Oh, my God. Peach and Lily guys.
16:13I love Peach and Lily.
16:14And they have this amazing discovery kit that has actually everything in it that you need.
16:19I'm going to discover that.
16:20Yes.
16:21Covenant House is all about fresh starts and finding stability.
16:26Okay, kids, you know what I believe.
16:28I believe in body care, and when you take care of your body, you lift your spirit,
16:32and nobody does that better than Sulte Sedaro.
16:37And they believe that beauty is an attitude.
16:39Yes.
16:40So let me ask you this.
16:41Do you think, Leora, the residents at Covenant House would like that?
16:45They definitely would. Give me a couple.
16:46Oh, because it smells so good, right?
16:48Yeah.
16:49Let's keep shopping.
16:52I love this.
16:57I love Redken.
16:58Redken's amazing.
16:59I use Redken on everybody, everything.
17:01It's a go-to.
17:02If you want Corey to smile, just say Redken.
17:05We know that that's his buzzword.
17:07I love this dry shampoo.
17:09The dry shampoo is a must-have.
17:11It's always in my kit.
17:12So Corey has Redken, and Leora has Elf Cosmetics.
17:16She was a kid in a candy store.
17:18Oh, my goodness. It's beautiful.
17:21I love Elf products because it helped me regain my confidence while I was in Covenant House.
17:26Guys, this is a full-on functioning salon.
17:30Yes, it's all in one.
17:32This store is huge.
17:34And I feel like we just scratched the surface.
17:36Look at how beautiful these bottles are.
17:38Beautiful.
17:39These are perfect gifts for the residents.
17:41Self-care isn't a priority when you're in survival mode.
17:44That's why these gifts will be so meaningful.
17:47You know, I love Ulta Beauty, right?
17:49Because they have everything.
17:50But did you know they have so much more than just beauty and makeup and skin care?
17:53They have wellness products.
17:55Like this milk and honey deodorant.
17:57It not only smells good, it's comfortable to wear, and it makes you feel confident.
18:03Put this in the bag.
18:04This is amazing.
18:05It all goes in the bag.
18:06If you like it, it goes in the bag, okay?
18:08Let's go. Put it in the bag.
18:09I want to thank Ulta Beauty for their generosity.
18:12And I want to thank the Kelly Clarkson Show for sharing our story and reminding people what hope looks like.
18:17How do you feel, and how do you think the residents are going to feel when they open up their gifts?
18:22The residents are going to light up when they open a few gifts.
18:25For some of them, it's not just a gift.
18:28I feel amazing.
18:29I'm giving back to the youth that are in my position.
18:33That was just a year ago.
18:35And Covenant House has been doing this for 50 years.
18:37Yeah.
18:38I'm ready to give some holiday gifts.
18:40Ulta Beauty knows how to do this.
18:42This is a lot.
18:43It's a lot, but we can do it.
18:44I got to help.
18:45Do it?
18:46All right.
18:50All right, we have Leora joining us now, along with Anita Ryan, Ulta Beauty's Chief Human Resource Officer and President of the Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation.
18:59We've also got Lawrence and Corey in the audience.
19:01I'll give it up for Lawrence and Corey.
19:03Well, Leora, how do you feel the shopping spree went? Did it go well?
19:09Oh, my God.
19:10It was so exciting.
19:12It was so much products to choose from.
19:15Yeah.
19:16And self-care equals self-confidence, so.
19:19Yeah, it makes you feel good.
19:20Yeah.
19:21It makes you feel good.
19:22And then your confidence skyrockets, everything changes.
19:23Yes.
19:24That domino effect.
19:25Yeah, exactly.
19:26Yeah.
19:27It was so fun and so exciting.
19:28Yeah.
19:29Oh, you have the best smile ever.
19:31This shopping spree is just one way you continue to support Covenant House, right?
19:35Yes.
19:36Just recently, I used my voice in Washington, D.C., and I was able to sit down with congressmen and the senators to discuss what Covenant House is about, overcoming homelessness, and why we need more funding for youth shelters.
19:50Yeah.
19:51So, if I didn't have that example of people that believed in me, then I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Covenant House.
19:59Well, Anita, what does it mean to you to be able to support the residents of Covenant?
20:03Well, I have to tell you, it's an honor to be here representing Ulta Beauty.
20:06Yeah.
20:07And the amazing work the Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation does to empower women and teens.
20:12We've worked with Covenant House for four years, and you've heard from Leara's story that it's amazing, and they provide housing and really skilled needs to help them be the better person and get out there.
20:27So, we couldn't be more thrilled of our partnership with them.
20:30Yeah.
20:31And Kelly, thank you to you and your team.
20:33Yes.
20:34Right?
20:35For allowing us to show the power beauty can do.
20:37Yeah.
20:38And spreading that season cheer.
20:39Restore dignity and confidence.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Yeah.
20:42The season cheer in the holiday season to be brighter.
20:44What we could have done and have done for the Covenant House in New York is just tremendous.
20:49Wow.
20:50We've done a lot with the Covenant House, and we're so proud of our partnership.
20:56But, we want to do more this year.
20:59Yeah.
21:00And so, we are going to do an additional donation.
21:05$15,000 to the Covenant.
21:08Wow.
21:15I need that kind of energy.
21:17Oh my gosh.
21:19That's so incredible.
21:21Listen, take a deep breath.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Because there's more.
21:26Yes.
21:27Okay?
21:28So, not only are we going to do the additional $15,000, but based on everything you have been
21:33through, your leadership and your courage to speak and do what you do, we are going to
21:39do an additional $5,000 investment for your future, for you.
21:43It's a good investment.
21:56We know the return that everybody is going to get from us.
21:59Yeah, we got tissues.
22:00Brennan, we have tissues.
22:02You're welcome.
22:05Oh my goodness.
22:06Okay.
22:07I'm just crying because knowing what I went through, I could have been dead, you know?
22:13But, that night I found Covenant House, I never looked back.
22:16It changed my life.
22:17Oh my gosh.
22:18Well, it's a great investment.
22:19Yeah.
22:20For sure.
22:21All right.
22:22Well, let's get to a few commercials.
22:23Coming up, something we look forward to every year.
22:25We're surprising a high school choir with big news for the holidays.
22:28Stay right here.
22:43Welcome back, everybody.
22:45Just outside our studio, crews are putting the finishing touches on this year's Rockefeller
22:49Center Christmas tree.
22:51It's beautiful.
22:52It officially lights up on Wednesday, December 3rd.
22:55That's a week from tomorrow, part of Christmas in Rockefeller Center.
22:58Each year, NBC4 New York and Telemundo 47 invite me and my music director, Jason Halbert,
23:03to select one star choir from the tri-state area to perform on the broadcast.
23:08Here's a look back at some of the winning choirs.
23:10This year, 57 choirs entered the competition.
23:1472 choirs entered the competition.
23:1676 choirs entered the competition.
23:18PS 103 is the winner!
23:20You guys are going to Rockefeller City!
23:25The winning choir is PS 14!
23:29High Tech High is the winner!
23:34Neptune High School is the winner!
23:39You're going to sing at the tree lighting.
23:50Jason is joining me now.
23:53How do you feel re-watching the winning choirs?
23:55I love it.
23:56I mean, you know, this is one of my favorite times of the year.
23:58I think since we know how much choir meant to us growing up,
23:59and so it's such a cool thing to be a part of.
24:01a part of. Such a huge stage. Yeah. I would have died. Yeah, that would have been crazy. Yeah.
24:06Well, let's get to this year's winner. So once again, it was a tough choice. It really was. There
24:10were some really talented choirs. We had some great choreography this year, some great arrangements.
24:14Yeah. But this one choir, you know, I'm a little bit of a nerd. This one choir was wearing like
24:17Renaissance Festival robes. They do magicals. Which is right up your alley, sir. I gotta say,
24:22that one won me over, but it wasn't just that. It was their arrangements. It was their
24:26choreography. They added like body percussion to the whole thing. And so the winning choir
24:31this year is, and TV wants a dramatic pause, and a drum roll, and a guitar roll, and a
24:41whole band roll. Yes. Gold and blues choir from Franklin High School in Somerset, New
24:49Jersey. All right. All right. We're going to show y'all their audition
24:56right now. Here you go.
24:57All right. All right. This is my favorite part, y'all, though. The golden blues choir still doesn't know they've won. So we have news for New York's Natalie Pascarella outside the choir room at the school right now.
25:25The kids just think they're finalists right now. So, Natalie, the kids can't hear us, right?
25:29No, Kelly, they definitely can't hear us. You can hear them and see them warming up over my shoulder. I cannot wait for you all to meet these kids. They are so talented. You're going to be blown away.
25:39All right. Well, Natalie, don't go anywhere, because when we come back, those kiddos are in for a big surprise. They're going to find out they're performing at the world-famous Christmas in Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting. You don't want to miss this.
25:49All right. Welcome back. I'm here with my music director, Jason Halbert, and each year NBC4 New York and Telemundo 47 invite us to select one choir from the tri-state area to perform at Christmas in Rockefeller Center Wednesday, December 3rd.
26:13This year, we chose the amazing Golden Blues Choir from Franklin High School in Somerset, New Jersey. But here is the coolest part. They still don't know they've won.
26:21We have news for New York's Natalie Pascarella at the school right now, where the kids just think they're finalists. So, Natalie, who do you have with you right now?
26:29Kelly, so excited to be here. I am joined by the choir director here at Franklin High, Kira Radvanski, and this is so cool. She's actually a former student of the school, and about three years ago, she took over from her former teacher, which is really cool. She heads up the magical choir, and they are known as the Golden Blues. Everybody say hi to Kelly.
26:51Hi, Kelly!
26:53Hey!
26:54Yeah, as you can tell, we're all thrilled to be here. Mrs. Radvanski, talk a little bit about what exactly a magical choir is.
27:01A magical choir, it is a chamber choir, so that means it's a smaller choir by design. We sing a lot of Renaissance music, so more on the classical side of things, and we go out into our community.
27:13This is really a service, being in this group, and so we go to our elementary schools. You'll find us in churches and senior citizen homes, and what makes us really unique, though, is that in the spring, we have an alter ego. We do a little pop a cappella contemporary sound.
27:31They're hard at work. They're hard at work, so we want to bring in the kids now, the students of the magical choir, Golden Blues. Okay, let's talk with Abigail and Miles.
27:41Abigail, talk a little bit about, you said when you were a child, you watched this choir.
27:46Yes. When I was young, like, throughout elementary school, I would always go to my town's tree lighting events and churches, and they would always be performing, and I just remember thinking to myself back then, like, this is part of a group that, like, I want to be part of it so bad, and I want to do exactly what they do and give back to the community and make people happy, and now I'm here.
28:08Now I'm here.
28:09Talk about a big opportunity. What would it mean to be able to perform at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting?
28:13It would be so special. Music is my passion, and I can say that for pretty much everybody here, and it's so great that when we get to bring our different experiences and our different voices together just to create something beautiful like we have, and we're in our communities.
28:25We bring joy to our communities, our schools, like Ms. Rad said, and it would be just beautiful if we could bring that to an even bigger stage like Rockefeller Center.
28:32Well, you're on the stage right now, and I don't know about you, Kelly, but I am ready to hear you all. All right, guys, it's time to show Kelly what you got. You ready? Here we go.
28:41Here we go.
28:43Here we go.
28:46The work of the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say, throw cans away.
28:50Christmas is here, waving a cheer to young and old, pink and the whole.
28:55Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas, merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas.
28:59All on this end, all with a hand, giving a little joy to every home.
29:08The work of the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say, throw cans away.
29:12Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, one who seems to hear words of the cheer from everywhere I feel in the air.
29:20Oh, a little bell, praise the sound, our dear, tell the sound, hear the lyri,
29:23rock, people sing songs of the cheer, Christmas is here.
29:28Ding dong dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong.
29:34Ding dong, ding dong.
29:36Don't listen all about it and it puts on to everyone.
29:43Wow. Kelly, oh my goodness.
29:45What are they? Fantastic.
29:49I mean, it's just incredible.
29:51You can imagine how fantastic they would be at the Rockefeller Center tree lighting.
29:55Oh my God, that was so beautiful.
29:57I got so excited.
29:58That's my favorite Christmas carol to hear.
30:00Oh my God.
30:00We have exciting news after reviewing all the audition tapes.
30:04We are pleased to announce Franklin High School is the winner.
30:09You guys are going to watch the Rockefeller Center.
30:11You're going to sing it to tree lighting.
30:28All right.
30:29I don't know if they can hear me because they're still freaking out, which is awesome.
30:32But that is not all, my friends.
30:34NBC4 New York and Telemundo 47 are donating $5,000 to help support your music program.
30:44And wait.
30:45Wait, wait, wait, wait.
30:46I have even more.
30:48Our friends at Boliva are kicking in an additional $5,000.
30:52That's $10,000.
30:53Plus, Boliva is giving you each one of their amazing watches.
31:04You get gifts, money.
31:05This is awesome.
31:06I love it.
31:07Oh my gosh.
31:12Thank you guys so much.
31:14Thank you, Franklin High School and the Golden Blues.
31:16Y'all are incredible.
31:18Everybody, Christmas from Rockefeller Center airs live on NBC and Peacock on Wednesday, December
31:223rd at 8 p.m.
31:23And if you live in the tri-state area or other select cities, coverage starts at 7 p.m.
31:28on NBC4 New York, where you can see this amazing choir perform.
31:32Check your local listings, everybody.
31:33Y'all don't go anywhere, though.
31:35We have more holiday goodness on the way with some DIY decorating tips.
31:39Welcome back.
31:53Thanksgiving is days away, people.
31:55That means behind the scenes, our team is busy getting ready.
31:59Our set looks so ridiculous every year.
32:01The holiday transformation is incredible.
32:03And here with a sneak peek and tips for our own holiday decorations, let's welcome back
32:08the Kelly Clarkson Show art director, Kate Taylor.
32:10Give it up for her.
32:12Look, y'all do it.
32:14First of all, you look gorgeous.
32:16This is your color.
32:17And secondly, y'all do such a great job every year, but what's happening this year?
32:20What's going on?
32:21So this year, we're going to do a cabin Christmas.
32:23Thanks snowy.
32:25Yeah, it's going to be really fun.
32:26Thanks snowy Montana cabin in the woods.
32:28Pink it.
32:29Warm colors, lots of patterns, fun textures.
32:33Let's start with the trees, though.
32:34These are beautiful.
32:35This year, we're partnering again with our friends at Balsam Hill, and they've sent us
32:39the most beautiful trees.
32:40This is the Aspen Silver Fir, and I love this tree.
32:43It's so natural and has such an organic silhouette.
32:46It's really pretty.
32:47So we're going to put these around the outer edges of the set so that it looks like we're
32:51looking out at the Montana wilderness, and I think it's going to be really pretty and
32:54effective.
32:54Yes.
32:55Okay.
32:55All right.
32:56So one thing I want to mention is that this year, Balsam Hill has a big push to make
33:00sustainable trees.
33:01And so the cool part about this tree is that the needles are made with plant-based plastic
33:06that's derived from sugar cane.
33:08Yeah, Balsam Hill.
33:08Which is so cool, and they're really soft.
33:10I know.
33:10I felt so good.
33:11I love that.
33:11I always take that into consideration.
33:12But also sturdy because they'll hold the ornament.
33:14Absolutely.
33:15I like decorating.
33:17But I love that you're going to pull out this tree and reuse it year after year, and
33:20it's made with sustainable materials.
33:22It's really cool.
33:22Yeah.
33:23Or you just keep it up in your house.
33:25Or you do that and have some extra care.
33:27Oh, you're long.
33:27You're too lazy.
33:28I don't know anyone that does that.
33:30Okay.
33:31What else?
33:31What else we got here?
33:32Let's go over and look at this tree.
33:33So this is going to be our hero tree on set, and I love this tree.
33:37I am so happy.
33:38This is the Aspen Estate Fur Renew Tree, and it's also a gorgeous tree.
33:42It has a much fuller silhouette, but it's so beautiful and natural looking.
33:47And the needles on this one are made from your water bottle caps.
33:51So it's recycled plastic, and 30% of it's made from your water bottle caps, which is really
33:56cool, right?
33:56Yeah.
33:57I love that.
33:57I love that they care, and they're doing that.
33:59That's awesome.
34:00It's so neat.
34:01These velvet little numbers are my favorite.
34:03Well, we're featuring the Rustic Elegance Ornament Collection this year, and I love that
34:07collection because the ornaments look vintage.
34:11Look how cool these are.
34:12I love the velvet ones.
34:13Yeah.
34:13They're so cool.
34:13And that's the other favorite part about this collection is that it varies the textures.
34:17So if I can give you one tip this year when you're decorating your tree at home,
34:22it's to vary the texture of your ornaments.
34:24Don't just hang all shiny ones.
34:26If you do some shiny, some matte, some velvet, I've even added in these little birds with feathers
34:32and mirrored stars.
34:33It really creates like a depth and dimension that you couldn't get otherwise, and you end
34:37up with a very professional looking tree.
34:39I love that.
34:40So we're going to decorate a few sizes of trees for a set.
34:43This is a seven and a half foot.
34:44We're also going to do a nine foot tree.
34:46Yeah.
34:46Obviously, we don't have to worry about ceiling height in here, but at home when you're choosing
34:50the right size tree, you always want to choose a tree that's six to 12 inches lower than
34:55your ceiling.
34:56Don't Chevy chase the moment.
34:57That's right.
34:58This way you have plenty of space for your topper, and it'll be perfect.
35:02So if you have eight or nine foot ceilings, which is the most common, go for a seven
35:05and a half foot tree.
35:06Yeah.
35:06Because you'll have a big, beautiful tree that'll fill the space, but you'll have room
35:09for your topper, and you won't end up with a disaster.
35:12All right.
35:12What's next?
35:13So the last thing I want to talk about is alternative uses for trees around your home.
35:18Okay.
35:18This is a really easy tablescape.
35:20I love these little birch trees.
35:22I love them.
35:23They're so great.
35:24First of all, they're really fun to fluff out with your kids.
35:26They come together really quickly.
35:28I varied the height between 24 and 36 inches.
35:31They're branchy enough that they don't obstruct the view across the table, which is important,
35:35right?
35:36Mm-hmm.
35:36They're battery-
35:37You're not doing this at dinner.
35:38Yeah, exactly.
35:39They're battery-operated, which I love, so you don't have to worry about any cords.
35:42I've just laid down a beautiful runner.
35:45I've used some battery-operated garland that I've tucked them into, added a little shimmer
35:49garland, and then I finished off my play setting with the bows, the nod back to the tree.
35:53That's really cute.
35:54I love these.
35:55It comes together in under 10 minutes.
35:57Let's be honest.
35:57By the time you finish the tree, you're tired.
35:59So this is really quick.
36:00Because your kids say they're going to help, but then they don't.
36:02And then they don't, and you regret all your life choices.
36:04So this is really easy.
36:06And they're wintry, so you can leave them up after the holidays.
36:09I even used them last year for my son's first birthday in January because I did a woodland
36:13theme, and they look so fun with the little animals around them.
36:16It was really great.
36:16Thank you so much, Kate.
36:18You do such a great job at this.
36:19It's such a beautiful set.
36:21The whole team does such a great job here.
36:24And to our friends at Balsam Hill, thank you for helping us deliver holiday magic again
36:28this year.
36:29Balsam Hill has the most realistic, true-to-nature, reusable Christmas trees and decor.
36:34You can order everything you need this holiday season and for years to come online.
36:38You can also see their products in person right now at Rockefeller Center's Opry Skate
36:42Chalets, each decorated with its own festive theme.
36:45It's magical.
36:46It's overlooking the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink.
36:49We'll be right back with What I'm Liking.
36:50All right, everybody.
37:05We are almost out of time.
37:06But before we go, let's share one more very important story.
37:09This is What I'm Liking.
37:14November is Native American Heritage Month, which celebrates the history, culture, and
37:18contributions of Indigenous Americans.
37:20It also shines a light on the struggles within Indigenous communities.
37:24According to the National Institute of Justice, four in five Native women will experience violence
37:29in their lifetime.
37:30It's a devastating statistic that's explored in the new documentary, She Cried That Day.
37:35The crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women is not going to be an easy issue to fix.
37:42But we need to start somewhere.
37:48We have the filmmaker dialed in from Atlanta, where she watches on WSB-TV.
37:59Everybody say hello to Amanda Erickson.
38:02Hi, Amanda.
38:04Well, this is a really under-reported story, right?
38:08Absolutely.
38:09This is a crisis that's been allowed to hide in plain sight because of a lack of communication
38:16and a lack of resources.
38:18Native families have had to take matters into their own hands in order to get answers and
38:25get justice.
38:26Oh, my goodness.
38:27Will you say this film is deeply personal for you?
38:29Tell everybody how.
38:30Well, for me, I'm San Carlos Apache from the Whitewater clan out in Arizona, but I grew
38:37up outside of community on the East Coast.
38:40So it was really my reconnection with my culture.
38:43And I was blown away by the strength and the power of these young women.
38:49And we were lucky enough to have a family, Dionne Thomas' family, open their arms and their
38:55lives to us and really show us what Native families are having to go through in order
39:00to get justice.
39:02And when you watch this film, I feel like their openness, their vulnerability allows you to
39:09get an intimate look at what families that are dealing with this crisis are going through.
39:15And it also shows you the undeniable power and beauty of the Native women on the front lines
39:23of this issue.
39:23It's incredible that you're spotlighting this, since so many people aren't.
39:29And, you know, you're talking about one family, which I assume can only be from four out of
39:33five women being affected.
39:34So many families that are going to be impacted by you taking the time to shine a light on
39:39this.
39:39Thank you so much, Amanda, for sharing and making this.
39:42I'm liking your place right now.
39:44That's not all, though.
39:45Our season one partner, Pilot Pen, Makers of Friction, The Go-To Riskful Pen of the Kelly
39:49Clarkson Show, want to support the work you're doing.
39:51So they're writing the coalition to stop violence against Native women's, a check for $1,000
39:55just to pitch in.
39:56Thank you so much.
39:58It's incredibly important what you're doing.
40:00Thank you to all our guests this hour.
40:02Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Leora, Laurence Zarian, Corey Morris, Anita Ryan, Jason Hubbard,
40:09Kira Bansky, Natalie Pascarella, the Golden Blues Choir, of course, Kate Taylor, and our
40:15friends at NBC4 New York and Tournamental 37.
40:17You have a great day.
40:18If it's not enough, thank you.
