00:04it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:07The Night, Van Cazaria.
00:09Star of Sentimental Value, actress Renata Riza.
00:13From PayPal, Demon Hunter, singers EJ,
00:15Audrey Nunez, and Ray Ami.
00:20And now, Seth Meyers.
00:23Good evening, everybody.
00:24I'm Seth Meyers. It's Late Night.
00:26We hope you're doing well.
00:27And now, if you don't mind, we are going to get to the news.
00:30Brazil's Supreme Court yesterday
00:31ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro
00:34to begin serving his 27-year prison sentence
00:37for attempting a coup after losing an election.
00:40Wow. Our guy only got four years.
00:44Bloomberg News published a transcript yesterday
00:47of a leaked phone call between Special Envoy Steve Witkoff
00:50and one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's top aides,
00:53in which Witkoff appears to offer advice
00:55on how to flatter President Trump.
00:57Though, if they want to know how to talk to Trump,
01:00they should ask Zoran.
01:03I mean, for real.
01:05Look at that.
01:07Normally, the only time you see an old guy smile like that
01:11is when his favorite restaurant opens at 4.
01:15While speaking yesterday
01:16at the annual White House turkey pardoning,
01:18President Trump said that he had never seen a turkey
01:20that big before.
01:21said in aid,
01:22Sir, that's Mitch McConnell.
01:27Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee
01:29is facing criticism for continuing to serve
01:31as a paid spokesman for a sleeping pill
01:33while serving as the U.S. ambassador to Israel,
01:36but it won't matter
01:36as long as his number one customer is happy.
01:41The New York Times published an article yesterday
01:43on how President Trump is aging in office,
01:46and it's a pretty quick read.
01:51President Trump criticized the New York Times
01:53in a post on Truth Social today
01:54for publishing an article
01:56that argues he has slowed down due to aging
01:59and called the newspaper a, quote,
02:00cheap rag.
02:02And nothing says I'm not old
02:04like calling a newspaper a cheap rag.
02:07That's definitely how young people talk.
02:10Those muckrakers?
02:11A group of progressive senators
02:14nicknamed the Fight Club
02:15are reportedly challenging
02:16Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's strategy
02:19for midterm elections.
02:20Well, leave it to the Democrats
02:21to immediately break
02:22the first rule of Fight Club.
02:26Well, you guys, tomorrow is Thanksgiving,
02:28so you've got less than 24 hours
02:30to do something with that theater degree.
02:37Pope Leo is set to travel to Turkey
02:40on Thanksgiving.
02:40And you know what?
02:41I think we're just going to let your dad have that joke.
02:45The sandwich chain Subway has begun offering
02:47a sub inspired by the turducken
02:49called the Turhamkin,
02:51which is served with turkey, ham, chicken, stuffing,
02:54a stool, and a rope.
03:03Authorities in Tempeh recently arrested
03:05nearly 250 people at a bar near University...
03:08and, excuse me, near Arizona State University
03:11for underage drinking.
03:12To be fair, that is the school's full name.
03:18And finally, K has seriously released
03:20its Extra Crispy Festive Feast,
03:22which includes a new gravy flight
03:24featuring three different flavors.
03:26Gravy flight is also what they call
03:28the helicopter ride to the hospital afterwards.
03:32And that was a monologue, everybody!
03:35It's got a great Subway tonight.
03:37You know, from the Birdcage, as well,
03:39there's fantastic shows like
03:40The Simpsons and Brockmire.
03:42Currently, he's starring in The Artist.
03:44The first three episodes will be available
03:46to watch November 27th on the Network.Stream.
03:50Hank Azaria is back on the show, everybody.
03:53She's a fantastic actress, indeed,
03:56and the worst person in the world,
03:57presume innocent, in Oslo, August 31st.
04:00She stars in the amazing new film,
04:02Sentimental Value, which is in theaters now.
04:05Renata Reinceva is back on the show.
04:06We're so happy to have her.
04:09And this is incredibly cool.
04:11We are very excited.
04:12You know them as the singing voices
04:14of the fictional pop group Huntrix
04:16from the massive animated Netflix movie
04:18K-pop Demon Hunters.
04:20See them perform at the 99th edition
04:23of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade,
04:24which airs tomorrow at 8.30 a.m.
04:26on NBC and Peacock across all time zones.
04:29EJ, Audrey Nuna, and Ray Amir are here, you guys.
04:32How about that?
04:34Before we get to everything we've just promised you,
04:38you guys, it's almost Thanksgiving.
04:42Everybody's gathering for the feast,
04:43and that includes my writers.
04:45You know, they write hundreds of jokes every day
04:47just to get the 10 or 12 we use in the monologue.
04:50And honestly, a lot of those jokes just aren't good.
04:54Sometimes I think they throw in a few stinkers on purpose
04:56just to fill the page, meet the assignment.
04:58But just because the pumpkin pie is cooling on the sill,
05:02that doesn't mean we can tolerate laziness,
05:04which means it's time for another surprise inspection.
05:07Here's how this works.
05:15I'm going to read some real jokes
05:17that were really submitted by my real writers
05:20that we pay real money.
05:24Some are dumb, some are offensive,
05:26some are just insane.
05:27Most importantly, my writers don't know we're doing this,
05:30and because they don't watch the show,
05:33they'll never know.
05:34So let's get started.
05:36Honda has issued a recall for more than 400,000 sedans
05:40due to an issue with wheel nuts,
05:42so you'd have to be wheel nuts to keep driving yours.
05:49That's Matt wrote that joke.
05:51We will be showing the pictures of the writers
05:55to shame them, and also, you know, as a cautionary device.
06:00So if you ever see someone who looks like this coming,
06:02you know, cross the street.
06:07Authorities in New Mexico...
06:08By the way, we also start with the ones
06:10we think will go the best.
06:13Authorities in New Mexico recently caught a pig
06:16after it was found running on a highway.
06:18They gave him a porking ticket.
06:22That's Brian.
06:25Brian sits next to Matt,
06:27and I imagine the conversation went like this.
06:31Just came up with porking ticket,
06:33and he was like,
06:35sorry, buddy, I got wheel nuts.
06:39The talent agency UTA recently signed
06:41the makers of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
06:44as part of their plan to make America great again.
06:47Oh, no, we broke you with the first two.
06:59That was Matt again.
07:01Now, Matt and Brian, you know, they have a lot of fun.
07:05A couple of cool dads.
07:08There's a third character in the old writer's room,
07:10and his name is Mike Scollins,
07:11and a childless man.
07:18Dark-hearted, black-souled.
07:21Not worrying about letting anyone down.
07:24And his joke is next.
07:27An Oregon woman recently rescued a shark
07:29that was stranded on a beach
07:31by grabbing its tail
07:32and dragging it into the ocean.
07:35She'll be missed.
07:35A couple of things to know about Scollins,
07:45a couple of fun facts.
07:45He's from Massachusetts,
07:46and he wears a tank top to work.
07:52Betty Crocker has launched
07:53its new Super Moist collection,
07:56which features sweatshirts, hats, and totes.
07:58But, guys, if she sees you wearing it,
08:00she won't be.
08:01Bad news, Brian took a run at this story, too.
08:12Betty Crocker has launched a new collection
08:14of apparel and accessories
08:15branded with their trademark Super Moist.
08:17In response, Duncan Hines announced
08:19their new Swamp Ass collection.
08:26Taco Bell is set this week
08:28to launch its new fan-style menu.
08:30It's called that because you'll need a fan
08:32to get rid of the smells you make
08:34after eating it.
08:37Matt wrote that, uh...
08:40The smell...
08:42I take such offense with the smells you make.
08:47It's not the meal you eat.
08:48It's the smells you make along the way.
08:54Oh, boy.
08:56When you see a story like this in the news,
08:58you get so worried that Skollin's will see it.
09:02Because you know it's not going to be good for anyone.
09:07According to a new DNA analysis,
09:09Adolf Hitler might have had a micropenis.
09:12Really?
09:13It looked normal to me.
09:14Oh, no!
09:15So the premise of his joke,
09:28just to make it clear,
09:30is I, in reading the setup of that joke,
09:33would then admit to the audience
09:34that I'd seen it and it looked normal to me.
09:39And that I would realize my error.
09:41And he thought I'd see that and go,
09:44yeah, no, we should do that one.
09:48Skollin's knew I wouldn't do that one,
09:49so he tried a second effort
09:51that I also wouldn't do.
09:54According to new DNA analysis,
09:56Adolf Hitler might have had a micropenis
09:58and not, as he claimed,
09:59nine inches.
10:00Just want to hold a little bit longer
10:08so everybody can get a screen grab of this.
10:16I think they know what Hitler looks like.
10:19We don't have to put him in the key.
10:24All right.
10:24You know what?
10:25Let's clear the palette with a more fun story,
10:27a lighter one.
10:28Today was National Huggy Musician Day,
10:30which is a lot better
10:31than what you used to have to do.
10:42You're doing worse than Hitler.
10:48That was a...
10:49Hey, you guys know who wrote that joke?
10:51I don't have to tell you.
10:51Three choices.
10:58I'm going to read the joke.
10:59I want you all to mentally guess who wrote it.
11:02And finally, today was National
11:04Payback Your Parents Day.
11:05Way ahead of you said Eric and Lyle.
11:07This has been Surprise Inspection.
11:25We'll be right back with Hank Azaria, everybody.
11:27Our first guest tonight is an Emmy-winning actor.
11:53You know from the birdcage,
11:54as well as shows like The Simpsons and Brockmire.
11:56He stars in The Artist,
11:58which premieres with the first three episodes
12:00on the network.stream on November 27th.
12:03Let's take a look.
12:04He doesn't have it.
12:05He doesn't have it within him to set you free.
12:07A woman was never to be published.
12:10I did you a favor.
12:11You are never going to go to Paris.
12:12Why's a brazen one at that?
12:14You are never going to Paris.
12:16Do you hear me?
12:17You bet on the wrong pony,
12:19and you lost.
12:22We all did.
12:22The rest of it,
12:24that just doesn't matter,
12:25because you lost,
12:27I lost.
12:27Shut up.
12:29We all lost.
12:30Shut up, Marion.
12:31I'm getting the sense
12:31this isn't entirely about me.
12:33Marion!
12:34God damn it!
12:35God!
12:37Please welcome back to the show
12:38our friend Hank Azaria, everybody.
12:40Welcome back!
12:58I mean, punched by Mandy Patinkin,
13:01you can't ask for more than that.
13:02It's on the resume now.
13:03It's on the resume.
13:05Special skills.
13:06This is, I say this with adoration,
13:09this show is nuts
13:10in a really fun way.
13:11I have described it
13:12as Downton Abbey on acid.
13:14Yeah.
13:14And that is exactly what it is.
13:16It's a murder mystery
13:17that takes place in the Gilded Age.
13:19You play Thomas Edison.
13:21Was that on your bingo card
13:22for a part that would come your way?
13:24Really?
13:24You know, I can really
13:25check that one off.
13:27Thomas Edison.
13:28No, and I was like,
13:29what is this thing?
13:31Yeah.
13:31And they sent it over,
13:32and I read the script,
13:32and I'm like,
13:33this is really good.
13:34I mean, for a historical,
13:36I guess, black comedy,
13:38dramedy, whatever it is,
13:40set in the Gilded Age,
13:42the use of the C word
13:43came up more than I expected.
13:45More than I expected.
13:46It's immediately filthy,
13:48and you realize people
13:49didn't start using those words
13:50in, like, 1980.
13:51Those words have been around.
13:52I guess.
13:53Yeah.
13:53At least in this world,
13:55that's what happened.
13:56They're using it a lot.
13:57As Thomas Edison,
13:58I didn't have to say it.
13:59But I had to react to it
14:00quite a lot.
14:01You had to react to it.
14:02Yeah.
14:02It is on the network.
14:05Yes.
14:05If you go on Apple,
14:07okay, on your Apple thingy,
14:09and you search
14:10the network.stream,
14:12I got to do this
14:13because they need it
14:14to be said.
14:14Yeah.
14:15Search the network.stream,
14:17then you get a free app,
14:19and then you'll find this show.
14:20Got it.
14:21I'm glad you're spelling it out
14:22because I've said it twice already,
14:23and both times,
14:24I'm worried I'm saying it wrong.
14:26Yeah.
14:27They assure me it's real,
14:28and it actually wasn't.
14:30It's a real show.
14:31It felt like, you know,
14:31I know George Clooney,
14:32it felt like a joke
14:33he might be playing on me.
14:35I showed up at a set,
14:36and ha, ha, ha,
14:37it's not real.
14:38It's really funny
14:38to have enough money
14:39to prank somebody
14:40by making them shoot
14:41a whole season of television.
14:43George would do it.
14:44Yeah, and they, like,
14:44get you to do a full press tour,
14:46and then they're like,
14:47that's not a show.
14:48There was no film
14:49in the camera.
14:51You have a cover band.
14:52I do have a cover band.
14:53Easy Street Band.
14:55Yeah, Springsteen.
14:56Springsteen, yeah.
14:58And what's very novel
14:59about this,
15:00compared to cover bands
15:01I've heard any cover band,
15:03really,
15:04is you both are doing
15:04Springsteen songs,
15:05but you're also taking advantage
15:06of, like, that wonderful thing
15:08that Bruce does,
15:08which is he tells a lot
15:09of really great stories
15:11in between the songs.
15:12Yeah, a lot of spoken word
15:13from Bruce.
15:14Yeah.
15:15I grew up, you know,
15:16loving these bootlegs.
15:17Yeah.
15:17And now, on Spotify,
15:19you can get every live recording
15:20of Bruce ever made,
15:21but back in the day,
15:22we had to go to the record store
15:24and get to the thing
15:24called a record store.
15:25Yeah.
15:26You bought vinyl records,
15:28and he would give these,
15:30you know, monologues,
15:31we called them talks,
15:32in concert,
15:33which I found extremely inspiring.
15:36Yeah.
15:37Equal to the songs.
15:38Yeah.
15:38About following your dreams,
15:40of being who you are,
15:41about getting out
15:41of the circumstance
15:42you find yourself in.
15:44They also would often end
15:45with a song that you had not,
15:47you weren't guessing
15:48where it was going.
15:49And then right at the end,
15:50he would tie it into that song
15:51and that was incredibly special
15:53because then you would always
15:54remember the story with the song
15:55when you heard it over the years.
15:56Absolutely.
15:56I mean, he was really,
15:58I mean, he's a brilliant
15:59storyteller and writer,
16:00obviously.
16:01And sometimes you didn't know
16:02where he was going
16:03or like in the middle
16:04of a song called Grown Up,
16:05which is off his first album,
16:07he would tell the story
16:08about getting in a motorcycle
16:09accident as a teenager
16:10and he would connect his life
16:12with the songs in a way
16:15that was very affecting to me
16:17and really inspired me
16:18to try to become
16:18a creative person as a teenager.
16:20So you're obviously
16:20covering the songs.
16:21People have that expectation
16:22when they go to see a...
16:23Yes.
16:23We try to recreate Bruce's sound
16:25as exactly as possible.
16:26And then do you also
16:27then cover the stories?
16:29It's a weird thing.
16:30It's almost performance art set.
16:32Like I tell the story
16:34the night that I first met my wife
16:36and it was love at first sight
16:38for me, for Hank Azaria,
16:40but I tell it as Bruce.
16:42I tell the night that my...
16:45This is very much performance art.
16:46It's very strange.
16:48Yeah.
16:48Well, I turned 60
16:51a couple of years ago.
16:51I felt a certain way about that
16:53as the kids like to say.
16:55To cheer myself up,
16:56I'm like,
16:56I'm going to invite all my friends
16:57to a birthday party
16:58and do like a reverse surprise.
17:01I told them
17:02I had a Springsteen tribute band coming.
17:04I didn't say that I had been working
17:05for months to front it.
17:07And then I made them all watch it
17:09like I did a 90-minute performance.
17:10I'm like,
17:11one, two, three, four!
17:13And that was in, right?
17:14So this is a cry for help.
17:16Essentially.
17:17Yeah, I got it.
17:17I got it.
17:17I don't even call it.
17:19I call it a post-midlife crisis.
17:21It's great.
17:21Because I'm way too old.
17:22I will say,
17:23I want to,
17:23from a distance,
17:24this could really be Bruce.
17:26It could be Bruce.
17:26Yeah, it's really well done.
17:28I mean, I think...
17:29No, we're...
17:30It's a good band.
17:32Did you...
17:32Have you...
17:33Have you met the man?
17:36I met him years ago twice
17:39and fanboyed so hard the first time.
17:42I was doing a musical called Spamalot.
17:45Yes, fantastic.
17:46And thank you.
17:48Monty Python,
17:49another hero of mine.
17:51Well, he's not a real person,
17:52but you know what I mean.
17:53Yeah, Eric.
17:53Certainly, Eric.
17:54So I finished the show one night backstage,
17:57knock on the door of my dressing room.
17:58I open it,
17:59and Bruce Springsteen's sitting there alone.
18:01And I handled it really well,
18:02like this.
18:05Okay?
18:06And he was really sweet.
18:07He gave me his review of the show,
18:08and he was...
18:09And we chatted long enough for me
18:10to get up the nerve to tell Bruce
18:12what he meant to me.
18:13Yeah.
18:13Um, I tell this story in concert sometimes,
18:17and I said,
18:18Bruce, I gotta tell you,
18:19you know,
18:20your music meant so much.
18:21I had some very hard times as a teenager.
18:23Your music got me through it,
18:24but not just your music.
18:26Those monologues,
18:27they inspired me to be a creative person
18:28when really no one else would or could.
18:30I wouldn't be standing backstage
18:32at the Shubert Theater talking to you
18:34if not for you.
18:36That is what I said,
18:37but that is not how I said it.
18:39This, I swear,
18:41this is how it came out.
18:42Bruce,
18:43I love you,
18:44you're so angry.
18:45You've been so mad.
18:46I wouldn't be there.
18:48I sounded like a goose on acid.
18:51A lot of acid themes in my life.
18:54I don't think he could even understand
18:55what I was saying.
18:57And he just kind of looked at me
18:58and gave me kind of a fatherly pat
19:00on the shoulder.
19:00Right, right.
19:01And then found a reason,
19:02you know,
19:03to go away within 30 seconds.
19:05I don't blame him.
19:06Years later,
19:06I went to see his Broadway show.
19:07Which is incredible.
19:08Yes.
19:09And at intermission,
19:11a guy came up and said,
19:12would you like to come back
19:13and say hi to Bruce afterwards?
19:14Like, oh, of course.
19:15I said to my wife,
19:16I'm not going to blow it this time.
19:18I'm going to be calm.
19:20We go backstage.
19:21I'm doing deep breathing exercises.
19:23And he's making his way down
19:25a receiving line
19:25with his wife, Patty.
19:27And I swear,
19:27before he gets to us,
19:29before he can even say hello,
19:31I go, Bruce,
19:32you have my growing up.
19:33I'm growing up.
19:34No, seriously.
19:35My senior high school yearbook page
19:36is all the lyrics to growing up.
19:39And he looked at me,
19:41same look on his face,
19:42as if to say,
19:44aren't you the nut
19:45that effed this up the last time?
19:48Same, like,
19:49nice pat on my shoulder.
19:51And he was gone.
19:52But, yeah,
19:52so I blew it twice.
19:53That's all right.
19:54I feel confident
19:55you're going to have
19:55a third shot at this
19:56or you're going to nail it.
19:57I hope so.
19:57Yeah.
19:58Hey, thanks so much for being here.
19:59I'm so excited for the show.
20:01And it's great to have you guys.
20:02Hank Azaria,
20:03the artist premieres
20:04November 27th
20:05on the network.stream.
20:07We'll be right back
20:08with Renata Rancho.
20:27Welcome back.
20:28Our next guest
20:29is a talented actress
20:30you know from her work
20:31and the worst person
20:32in the world,
20:33A Different Man,
20:33Presumed Innocent,
20:34and Oslo,
20:35August 31st.
20:36She stars in Sentimental Value,
20:38which is in theaters now.
20:39Let's take a look.
20:40Please welcome back to the show.
21:09our friend Renata Reitseva,
21:11everybody.
21:27Hello!
21:28How are you?
21:29I'm good.
21:30I'm very happy to have you here.
21:31I want to talk about
21:32this fantastic film,
21:33but I want to ask,
21:34you're from Norway.
21:36Have you ever been in New York City
21:37or even in America
21:38for Thanksgiving?
21:39Never.
21:40So, you're going to do it?
21:41I'm going to do it
21:42first time tomorrow.
21:43And what are your plans?
21:45Yeah.
21:46We're very happy
21:47to get your involvement.
21:48I don't know how you guys do it,
21:49so I'm just going to imitate.
21:51I'm doing it with
21:52some other people from Europe.
21:53You don't want anyone local
21:55to help out?
21:56Well, yes, please.
21:59What do you do?
22:00I like that you're...
22:00Well, mostly if you just eat enough
22:02that you have to unbutton your pants,
22:04it's going great.
22:04So wear pants.
22:06But anything else?
22:07Do you do anything else?
22:08No.
22:08I mean, you try to think
22:09about the actual root
22:10of the holiday
22:10as little as possible.
22:12Yeah.
22:12Try not to actually
22:13dig into the history of it.
22:15I think just try to...
22:15Like, what are you thankful?
22:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:18You know what I mean?
22:19Just like, let's be thankful
22:20about today.
22:20Yeah.
22:21But so they told me,
22:23don't bring anything,
22:23just bring yourself.
22:24Yeah, I think that's good.
22:25I want to bring something.
22:25I mean, a bottle of red wine.
22:27I think a bottle of red wine
22:27would be fine.
22:28Okay.
22:28Don't try to cook anything.
22:30Okay.
22:31I mean, I'm not saying you're...
22:32I'm just saying, like,
22:33don't for the first time
22:34be like, I'm...
22:34Did you hear about that?
22:35Did you know my skills
22:36in cooking?
22:37Did I maybe hit a nerve?
22:39No, no.
22:40Are you a good cook?
22:41I'm okay.
22:42Great.
22:42I can't, like, put...
22:43I can't, like, put things
22:44together and improvise.
22:45Then it tastes really horrible.
22:47But I can, like, if I plan,
22:48if I...
22:49Gotcha.
22:49I can...
22:50I have to, like, rehearse.
22:51Yeah.
22:52I mean, you have just
22:53defined okay.
22:54Yeah.
22:55I'm very mediocre.
22:57Very mediocre across the board.
22:59But I can follow
23:00an instruction.
23:01Yeah.
23:01Does Norway have
23:03any big eating holidays?
23:05Well, we only have, like, Christmas.
23:07Like, every time I send an email
23:08to someone here,
23:09it's like, we're...
23:11It's the holidays.
23:12Yeah.
23:12I can answer you.
23:13We'll get back to you
23:14after the holidays.
23:15And you just have
23:15the one in Norway?
23:16Well, I talked to someone today,
23:20and we also have 17th of May.
23:22That's, like, your 4th of July.
23:24Okay, gotcha.
23:24So we have that.
23:25But it's Christmas.
23:27Got it.
23:27That's what we have.
23:28You have very long winters.
23:30Very long.
23:30Very dark.
23:31Very dark.
23:32And...
23:33But how do you keep
23:34your spirits up?
23:35Well, we do...
23:38It's a lot of lights everywhere
23:39because it's very, very dark.
23:40We have, like, a few hours of daylight.
23:42And we go into the sea,
23:44and we swim, like,
23:45take away the ice,
23:46and go in,
23:47and go into the sauna.
23:48Okay, so what is...
23:49You don't have to break ice
23:51and go in the water,
23:52so why do you?
23:53Because we...
23:56We get depressed.
23:58Okay.
23:58But now...
23:59But can you see from my...
24:00From where I'm sitting,
24:01that's even more depressing.
24:03Like...
24:03I can see it,
24:05but it works.
24:07Okay.
24:07So what is it?
24:09Is it just, like,
24:10light up endorphins or something?
24:11Like, what?
24:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:11It's all the good hormones
24:13comes up in the...
24:13Okay, gotcha.
24:14Do you think you've maybe been tricked
24:16in, like...
24:17Well, no, I'm just, like,
24:18that you're living a life in darkness,
24:19and so a bad thing
24:21seems like a good thing,
24:22because...
24:23Maybe.
24:23Oh, no, no, no.
24:25Come back to us.
24:25We're not...
24:26But, uh, and so with the sauna,
24:29I would imagine,
24:30is that you spend
24:31a little bit more time there.
24:32Like, quick in the water,
24:33and then long sauna.
24:34Some people do, like,
24:35hardcore stay in the water
24:36for a long time.
24:36I don't.
24:37I don't even use my hands in there.
24:39Okay.
24:39I hold the hands up like this.
24:41Got you.
24:41I'm not...
24:42I'm mediocre there, too.
24:43Okay, great.
24:45You are not mediocre in this film.
24:47I love this film so much.
24:48It's just absolutely beautiful.
24:51And it's, you know,
24:53it's a movie about a family,
24:54and it actually is well-timed
24:56for this part of the year,
24:58because it's a family
24:58with a complicated history.
25:00Yeah.
25:00Joachim Trier,
25:01who I know you've worked with before,
25:02he was here,
25:03the director and the writer,
25:04and he said he always
25:05had you in mind for the role.
25:06Does that put an extra burden on you
25:08when you hear that someone
25:09has sort of written it
25:10specifically for you?
25:11Yeah, it is scary,
25:12but it's also a great gift
25:14for an actor,
25:15because you get so much trust
25:17that he believes
25:18you can do something.
25:19He wanted to challenge me
25:20more after the worst person
25:21in the world
25:22with more emotional weight
25:24to have a more mature role.
25:27But when I opened the script,
25:28I was really scared,
25:29because he's very smart,
25:31very wise,
25:31so he sees things
25:32that I don't see about myself
25:34sometimes.
25:35And what he writes
25:36is so complex,
25:38and, yeah,
25:39it was both at the same time
25:41and really scary
25:42and so fantastic.
25:44There's, you know,
25:45it is about a family
25:46sort of coming to terms
25:47with one another,
25:47a family with, like,
25:48a difficult history,
25:49but, like, also a great amount
25:50of love for one another.
25:51Yeah.
25:52Your family,
25:53did they see it,
25:54and what was their reaction?
25:57No, so,
25:58my family has, like,
26:00all worked in, like,
26:02a hardware store
26:03when I was young.
26:04They fired me
26:05from that hardware store.
26:07They fired you
26:08from the hardware store?
26:09Well, I was, yeah.
26:11You weren't as good
26:11of a hardware person
26:13as a chef.
26:14No.
26:15So, they kind of,
26:17and I didn't always
26:18take it maybe so seriously
26:19that I wanted to be an actor,
26:21but I brought them
26:22to Cannes Film Festival
26:23where the movie premiered,
26:25and I just remember
26:26standing outside
26:27with my whole family.
26:28Like, it was so quiet.
26:30We weren't talking.
26:31After?
26:32After the screening,
26:33and then the time after,
26:35like, up until now,
26:36it's, like, kind of changed
26:37a little bit.
26:38It's, like, a warmer atmosphere.
26:40Oh, it's helped the family.
26:41Yeah.
26:41It's been therapeutic.
26:42Yeah, a little bit.
26:43I think it's a good movie
26:45that way,
26:45but I do want to say,
26:46like, here's your family.
26:47They were happy.
26:48They were a happy lot.
26:49Oh, they were going
26:49to be so happy
26:50to be on TV.
26:53What?
26:54Was there a moment?
26:58Be honest.
26:58Was there a moment
26:59that you did something
27:00where they were like,
27:00we can't keep her on
27:01at the hardware store?
27:03Yeah.
27:04Well, I would never
27:06show up on time,
27:06and I wasn't really interested.
27:08Yeah.
27:09You want, I will say,
27:10like, when I go
27:11to a hardware store,
27:12I certainly don't want
27:12someone working there
27:13to be like,
27:14I don't really care
27:14one way or the other.
27:16Right, yeah.
27:16I want experts
27:17who are, like, drilled down.
27:18Yeah.
27:19I would be like,
27:19go over there.
27:20I don't know.
27:22Have you been kicked
27:23out of anything else?
27:24Uh, yes.
27:25What else?
27:26Like, a lot of places.
27:28But the first thing
27:30was Girl Scouts.
27:31Oh, really?
27:31Yeah.
27:32I was really small.
27:33Okay.
27:34Like, I think,
27:35like, seven, eight,
27:36and they were like...
27:37You didn't get kicked out
27:38for being too small,
27:39did you?
27:39No.
27:40Seems like a bad
27:40Girl Scout unit.
27:41Yeah, yeah.
27:42No, I remember being
27:44sat down and like,
27:45we don't feel you belong here.
27:47But it was because
27:48you have to learn things
27:49a certain way
27:50to survive in nature.
27:52And I love nature.
27:53I'm a nature person.
27:53But I was, like,
27:55building these bird things,
27:56the houses,
27:57with, like,
27:57too many windows
27:58and many doors.
27:59Like, but why?
28:01Why can't I have
28:02all these doors?
28:03Right.
28:04And they suggested
28:05I start theater.
28:06Oh, that's right.
28:07Well, there you go.
28:08So, they're...
28:09That's really...
28:10I will say,
28:10that is a good
28:11Girl Scout troop leader.
28:13If you see too many doors
28:14on a birdhouse,
28:15you're like,
28:16I think we might have an actor.
28:20Uh, Joachim has made
28:21so many films in Oslo.
28:23I would imagine
28:23people who live in Oslo
28:24both, like, love it
28:25and also probably
28:26are critical of things
28:27they think he gets wrong
28:29Yeah.
28:30But how are you?
28:30Are you just, like,
28:31so recognizable in Oslo now
28:33from making these films?
28:34Well, yeah.
28:35More and more.
28:36But people in Oslo
28:37are very polite.
28:38They leave you alone.
28:39They're kind of, like...
28:40And we kind of...
28:41Everyone's on the same level.
28:43So, yes, yes,
28:45you did something great,
28:46but let's keep you down.
28:48Yeah.
28:48Yeah.
28:49No, right?
28:49There's not a celebrity culture.
28:51No.
28:51No, it isn't.
28:52So, it's, like,
28:53easy to take the bus everywhere
28:55and, like, walk around.
28:56But is it...
28:57I think I read
28:58that you were at a screening
28:59and you heard somebody
29:01behind you start talking
29:03or maybe in front of you.
29:04I was...
29:05Yeah, I came off the bus.
29:06Sorry.
29:06And now I interrupted you.
29:07But, yeah, I came off the bus
29:08and then I heard someone said
29:10I was just on the bus
29:11with Renaud Transler
29:12and I turned around immediately
29:14because I was so scared
29:15they would say something bad.
29:17Yeah.
29:17Yeah.
29:18So, you were like,
29:18I'm here, FYI?
29:19Yeah.
29:20I'm right here.
29:23That's really great.
29:24I think the important thing
29:26is they...
29:26I mean, what an amazing day
29:28to, like, the next place
29:29they went,
29:30they were at a restaurant,
29:30they were like,
29:31first I was on a bus with her.
29:32Yeah.
29:33Then she was right in front of us
29:34at the movie theater
29:35and then you're one table over
29:37at the restaurant.
29:37You're like, I'm here.
29:38I'm still here.
29:40I love this movie so much.
29:42I love seeing you again.
29:43Thanks so much for being here.
29:44Thank you so much.
29:45Congratulations on the phone.
29:46Renaud Ransha, everybody.
29:47Sentimental values in theaters now.
29:49Stick around.
29:49Be right back with EJ,
29:51Audrey Nuna,
29:52and Riyami.
29:52They are Grammy-nominated artists
30:15you know as the singing voices
30:17of the fictional pop group Huntrix
30:19from the wildly popular
30:20animated Netflix movie
30:22K-pop Demon Hunters.
30:23They'll be performing
30:23in the 99th edition
30:25of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
30:27which airs tomorrow
30:28at 8.30 a.m.
30:29on NBC and Peacock
30:30across all time zones.
30:31Please welcome to the show
30:32EJ, Audrey Nuna,
30:34and Riyami, everybody.
30:35Welcome, you guys.
30:58What a time to have you.
31:00We feel so lucky.
31:01All right.
31:02We feel lucky.
31:03Thank you for having me.
31:04Congratulations.
31:05Of course, Audrey,
31:06you've been here before.
31:072021, you were here with Samba,
31:09and it is so lovely to see you again.
31:11Also, we were talking backstage.
31:12I think there was no audience
31:13when you were here.
31:13Yes, it was a quiet audience.
31:16After we were done,
31:17we were like...
31:19Yeah.
31:20It was a very strange time
31:22to have guests on the show
31:23doing music
31:23because it would just finish
31:24and we'd be like,
31:24well, very well done.
31:26Thank you so much for being here.
31:28First TV performance,
31:29so thank you for that.
31:30You guys, I don't know.
31:33I don't know if you guys
31:34were out and about on Halloween,
31:35but surely it has been explained to you
31:37that you have taken over
31:39all the Halloween costumes.
31:40K-pop Demon Hunter was.
31:41Yeah.
31:42Was the scene.
31:43Mm-hmm.
31:43Was it exciting to know
31:44that you are now the cultural touchstone
31:46for what kids wanted to dress up like?
31:48Oh, my God.
31:49As a Korean?
31:50Yeah.
31:51I think absolutely.
31:52Are you kidding?
31:53Absolutely.
31:54Because I wanted to be Britney,
31:55so, like, this is so insane.
31:58You know?
31:58Let's come full circle.
32:00My son was Janu.
32:01There he is.
32:02Yeah.
32:02Yeah.
32:04Oh, no.
32:05He didn't love the wig.
32:08We got him.
32:08I think we maybe got
32:09one of the cheaper costumes.
32:11And he had an issue right away.
32:14Also, Grammy-nominated.
32:16Five Grammy-nominated.
32:22And, obviously,
32:23it's an emotional day, right?
32:24I would be exactly the same
32:26way you reacted, right?
32:28Yes.
32:29And, by the way,
32:30you weren't sharing it to the world.
32:32That was your reaction.
32:34And I think it's really sweet.
32:36Now, my question is,
32:36EJ, why did you write
32:37underneath this,
32:38ha, ha, ha, ha, ha?
32:41It's so funny.
32:42Did you, like,
32:44when you saw your friend sobbing,
32:45did you immediately think
32:47you were going to write,
32:47ha, ha, ha, ha?
32:48She's just so cute.
32:49She's just so cute.
32:51Look at the profile picture.
32:52The profile picture.
32:54The profile picture
32:54is also her crying.
32:55Wait, that's her crying?
32:56I didn't even notice.
32:57No, my God.
32:57That's when we were platinum.
33:00Oh, my God.
33:01Yeah, platinum.
33:01You guys.
33:02Very nice to know
33:04in real life,
33:04of course, you're supportive.
33:06Exactly.
33:07You guys,
33:08you had worked on these songs
33:09basically for about five years.
33:11Is that about right?
33:12Yes, yes.
33:13And is it true
33:13that you were composing
33:14some of Golden
33:15in the car
33:17on the way to the dentist?
33:18Yes, that's, uh, yes.
33:19You know, when I listened to it,
33:20I thought that might be the case.
33:22Yeah.
33:23You know what?
33:23It's not marketing.
33:24It's real.
33:25It's really real.
33:25So what happened?
33:26Like, does it just occur
33:27to you on a drive like that?
33:29You know what's crazy, too?
33:30It's, like,
33:30on the way to get Gold Fillings
33:31right over here.
33:33Okay, great.
33:34But, yeah,
33:35it was just crazy
33:36because it just happened
33:37so naturally.
33:38Like, um,
33:40what do you call it?
33:40So we had, like,
33:41a deadline.
33:42It was the last song.
33:43We needed to finish it.
33:44So they sent us the,
33:45me and Mark the track,
33:47and it was on the way
33:48to the dentist.
33:48And I think it's, like,
33:49the melody just came out
33:50really fast,
33:51and I just got really lucky.
33:53That's amazing.
33:54And then is it because you,
33:57as it comes to you,
33:57you know it's good.
33:58Is that, do you think,
33:59why you can pinpoint
33:59exactly where it happened?
34:00You're like,
34:01oh, man, drive to the dentist.
34:02That's where it all went down.
34:03Well, I have a voice memo,
34:05and you hear the taxi driver
34:06going like,
34:07like,
34:07Sorry.
34:10He wants some of the publishing.
34:11He's like,
34:11I'm on that track.
34:12Maybe, yeah.
34:13I could be honest.
34:15When you first heard
34:16the title of the project,
34:18K-pop Demon Hunters,
34:20like, what was your first reaction?
34:22Confusion.
34:23Mine was, like,
34:24because I was on the project
34:25for a minute.
34:26It was, like,
34:26called K-pop Movie,
34:28and then the other one
34:29was K-pop Demon Hunters.
34:30I was like,
34:31it's temporary, right?
34:32Like, I was just like,
34:33it's temporary.
34:33And she's like,
34:34yeah, yeah, don't worry,
34:34it's temporary.
34:35And then we saw the premiere,
34:36and I was just like,
34:38what is this film about?
34:40Yeah.
34:41I'm like,
34:41is this some sort of
34:42metaphor for life
34:43or something?
34:45Because it can't be about
34:47what it actually says, right?
34:49But it's genius.
34:50It catches your dreams,
34:52like, what is it?
34:53And then you watch it.
34:54Well, I think it's genius.
34:56Like, the thing is,
34:57first of all,
34:57it's a movie,
34:58Adults Love,
34:59but the title grabs kids.
35:00So as an adult,
35:01you hear the title,
35:02and you're like,
35:02oh, my God,
35:03this is going to be,
35:03you know,
35:04it feels like we're
35:05sharing the reaction.
35:05I'm like,
35:05this sounds so dumb.
35:07And then, like,
35:08someone like,
35:08won this, like,
35:09wave of parents started,
35:11words started getting back,
35:12which is like,
35:12you know what's really good?
35:13K-pop Demon Hunters.
35:14And you're like,
35:14real?
35:15For real?
35:16And they're like,
35:16yeah.
35:16And then, like,
35:17everybody watching,
35:17they're like,
35:18oh, my God,
35:18it's really good.
35:18And then you realize,
35:19you know,
35:19for kids,
35:20why are you trying to be tricky?
35:21Just call it what it is.
35:22Exactly.
35:22He's like,
35:23gets to the point.
35:24Yeah.
35:25The thing I always,
35:26like,
35:26I have to tell my father-in-law
35:27all the time,
35:27I'm like,
35:28stop being sarcastic
35:28with my kids.
35:29They don't understand sarcasm.
35:31You have to be literal
35:32if you want to make
35:33a point with them.
35:34All right,
35:42I think 100
35:42on the floor
35:43and then 20
35:44on the platform
35:45with us.
35:46Okay.
35:47I think so.
35:47I think so.
35:51Shout out to the dancers.
35:53Shout out to the dancers.
35:54Obviously,
35:54you've rehearsed
35:55with the dancers.
35:56And they just must be
35:57at a level of which
35:58we can't even comprehend.
36:00So good.
36:00They are serving.
36:01The energy is just,
36:03it feeds us too,
36:05you know,
36:05because we've done it.
36:07I'm like,
36:07we performed this song
36:08twice now.
36:10And this will be
36:11our second time.
36:12And I think
36:15having this energy
36:16around us,
36:17it really,
36:17I don't know
36:17how you guys feel,
36:18but it's so infectious.
36:20You feed off of that
36:21and it's just so powerful.
36:23I like, Audrey,
36:23that it's your second time
36:24and you're like,
36:24without the dancers,
36:25we'd be over it.
36:28Yeah,
36:28it doesn't,
36:29I mean,
36:29it's been a whirlwind
36:31for sure.
36:32You've got,
36:32you've got,
36:33of course,
36:33a float as well.
36:35Derpy tiger.
36:38I mean,
36:39that's a pretty
36:39special thing.
36:40And then,
36:40is this,
36:42this is Halloween?
36:43Yes,
36:44that's me.
36:44So here I am
36:46talking about Halloween,
36:47everybody's dressing up
36:48like K-pop demon hunters
36:49and I'm like,
36:50burying the lead.
36:50I think you did a great job.
36:52Yeah.
36:52She was so adorable.
36:53So you were back
36:56and forth between
36:57Korea and New Jersey,
36:58New Jersey and Maryland,
36:59correct?
36:59That's where you guys
37:00grew up.
37:00So,
37:01but I would imagine
37:01the representation
37:02for your family as well
37:03must be incredible
37:04to be in a film like this
37:06that, you know,
37:06has this incredible
37:07Korean element to it.
37:08Are they just like
37:09overwhelmed with pride
37:10for how well
37:11this has been received?
37:12You're looking.
37:13Are they here?
37:14Do you have parents here?
37:14Yes!
37:15Welcome!
37:20So happy you're here!
37:23It's so cool!
37:26I love their reaction.
37:28Yeah, it's really good.
37:29I think they're pretty proud of me.
37:29I feel bad
37:30because even I,
37:32knowing how much
37:32my kids like this,
37:33I asked you guys
37:34to sign stuff,
37:35but is your family,
37:36are you just getting
37:36inundated now
37:37with autograph requests?
37:38Oh, 100%.
37:39Yeah.
37:41I went to Korea recently
37:42and my mom's like,
37:43let's have dinner
37:43to celebrate.
37:45Private dinner,
37:46super casual.
37:48Okay.
37:49And so it was like,
37:49okay, it's gonna be a restaurant.
37:50It's gonna be a little room.
37:52And she's like,
37:53oh, by the way,
37:54you know,
37:54my friend's gonna come
37:55and she's gonna bring
37:56her niece and nephews.
37:57I was like,
37:57oh, that's fine.
37:58Oh, also my doctor's gonna come
37:59and she's gonna have her son.
38:01And then I was like,
38:03oh, okay, mom,
38:04is that it?
38:04She's like, yeah, yeah,
38:05I promise.
38:06I go there
38:06and there's 50 people there.
38:09And she's just so proud.
38:10I get it.
38:10And then there's like,
38:11lines of like,
38:12autographs to sign.
38:13It was just like...
38:14Oh, my God.
38:15It's just a merch table
38:16your mom has set up.
38:17Literally.
38:18A cake of roomie
38:20on the center.
38:20Oh, my God.
38:21But you got it.
38:22That's the best thing
38:23in the world.
38:23Yeah, they're so proud.
38:24Have any of you
38:25had to sign something
38:26dumb yet?
38:28I, my,
38:29my dad had me sign
38:31his friend's golf hat.
38:33But I literally signed it.
38:36It's the most Korean thing ever.
38:38The most Korean thing ever.
38:39And I signed it.
38:41He's like, no more.
38:42I'm just like, okay,
38:43let me get the back angle.
38:45It's like, no more.
38:46And literally,
38:47it looks like I vandalized his hat.
38:49It's cool, though.
38:49And he probably
38:50is golfing in it right now.
38:52That's fantastic.
38:53Yeah.
38:54Your sister,
38:55Risa,
38:55I'm married last month.
38:57And my aunts from Korea
38:58visited.
38:59And they had, like,
39:00a list of 50-plus people
39:01and, like, 20 businesses.
39:02They wanted me to endorse.
39:03And I'm like,
39:04I can...
39:05Also very Korean.
39:06Yes.
39:07I cannot endorse a business
39:08I've never stepped foot into.
39:10So I politely declined that.
39:12But, yeah,
39:12my wrist was working.
39:14Yeah.
39:14All night.
39:16It hurts now.
39:18That's how you know
39:18you're in a hit.
39:19They say if your wrist hurts,
39:21you're in a hit.
39:21Oh, is that what it is?
39:22That's what it is.
39:23Did your sister ask you
39:25to sing at her wedding?
39:26No.
39:26Okay, good.
39:27She can't afford it.
39:28She can't afford it.
39:28Right, there you go.
39:29Yeah.
39:32We love that.
39:34You three are
39:35just as a light to talk to.
39:37Congratulations.
