00:00Welcome to the Kelly Clarkson Show.
00:18Today we are starting with the Kelly O'Keele encore, first performed by one of the greatest
00:22singer-songwriters out there today.
00:24I was honored to have her join me for a whole hour of songs and stories earlier this year.
00:28Here is me and my band, y'all, with Sarah McLachlan's Building a Mystery.
00:58It's from faith that died before Jesus came, a building of mystery.
01:08You walk up screaming a lie, a prayer from your secret God, your feet off our fears, and
01:24hold back your tears.
01:25Oh, give us a tantrum, and I know it all, a grin.
01:33Just when we meet one, when the evening's dead.
01:39You're a beautiful, a beautiful, dumb man.
01:44You're setting up your raisin' wives right.
01:50Yeah, you're working, building a mystery, holding on, holding it in.
02:02Yeah, you're working, building a mystery, intrusin' so carefully, you're building a mystery.
02:20One more time, good luck in my band, y'all.
02:29All right, our first guests today have been described as American treasures by every single
02:39person in America.
02:40It's a fact.
02:41Look it up.
02:41One is an Oscar and Golden Globe winning actress, the other is a multiple Emmy and Golden Globe
02:47winning actor, and this year they became the first couple ever to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian
02:52Award, which honors media professionals whose philanthropic work has had a lasting impact.
02:57They're incredible people.
02:58You can see them in season two of Man on the Inside.
03:02It's available now on Netflix.
03:03Everybody give it up for Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson.
03:11We're kind of in the same color palette today.
03:40We are.
03:42I love that.
03:43I love having y'all here.
03:44Congrats on season two.
03:47You play love interest this season, yeah?
03:50Yes.
03:51Okay, what's happening with your characters this season?
03:53Or you're new this season, but yeah.
03:55I have solved the case.
03:57It's nine months later.
03:59We're in a different location, obviously.
04:01We're in a liberal arts college, and I am hot on the trail of many different suspects,
04:09and I bump into Mary, and all my talents as a private investigator go flying out the window
04:18because I'm just smitten.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Obviously.
04:21Look at that smile.
04:22So what's your character like?
04:23You're new this season, yeah?
04:24I'm new this season, and I'm a professor who long ago was a rock star.
04:32I opened for Fleetwood Mac.
04:34Yeah.
04:35And I had a song that was quite famous, but I became a sort of one-hit wonder, and so I end up being this professor at this college.
04:47And I'm also one of his suspects.
04:50Okay.
04:51Yeah.
04:52It gets even juicier.
04:53Okay, okay.
04:54You weren't in season one, so how'd you get involved?
04:56I mean, it was just this little miracle, because I used to run lines with him, and I do confess that when I would run lines with him, I was always thinking,
05:05this show is so funny and so good, I wish I was on it, but I had to, like, not lay that on him, you know?
05:12Yeah.
05:13Tried not to.
05:14Yeah.
05:15And then finally, at the end of season one, Mike Schur, who's the brilliant creator of that show, and Parks and Rec, and The Good Place, he said,
05:26you know, we are thinking about a part for you in season two, and it took everything not to just scream right in his face.
05:34You're trying to be casual about it?
05:35You're like, oh, that would be cool, I guess.
05:36Oh, cool.
05:37I'll try to fit it in.
05:38So, no, I love his work, and the writers, and the vibe of the show, and needless to say, he's my favorite actor, so it was pretty great.
05:49Y'all are so cute as a couple, it's so cute.
05:52We'll try to tamp it down.
05:54No, no, shine, I love it, shine.
05:57I want to talk about this, I said it right when you came out, look, I'm a newly found fan of Jessie Buckley, like, she's incredible.
06:04Wow.
06:05It's coming, it's so good, all of it, but I, as a singer as well, and you wrote a song that she's saying.
06:10Yes, I wrote it with Caitlin Smith, who you love.
06:13I love Caitlin Smith.
06:14I know, so we wrote it together, and we just, we loved the experience, and then she just knocked it.
06:24If you watch the movie Wild Rose, you'll see our song at the end of it.
06:28No, you're such a great songwriter.
06:29We also wrote it with Kate York.
06:30The three of us wrote that.
06:31And you wrote a song in this series as well.
06:33She won, you know, a Critics' Choice Award for that.
06:37She tied with Elton John for that song.
06:39I didn't know that.
06:41I just liked it.
06:42I didn't even, you didn't even need an award.
06:43I just thought it was really badass.
06:44Yeah.
06:45Hey, if you like it so much, you want to sing it someday?
06:46No, I know.
06:47I literally was like, that's a karaoke in the making.
06:48I was very excited about it.
06:49But you also wrote for this show as well.
06:50I did.
06:51And you usually don't sing it, right?
06:52You usually give the song.
06:53I am, well, I did sing in this one because supposedly I was a singer when I was young.
06:58But anyway, we had fun and this song turned out really great.
07:14And I wrote it with Troy Burgess.
07:15Tell them the name of the band, which I love.
07:17Oh, the band.
07:18Lavender Highway.
07:19Yes, I love Lavender Highway.
07:21It's so 70s.
07:22It's so 70s and perfect.
07:24And I was like, this should actually be a band.
07:26I know.
07:27Yeah.
07:28And for a gift, Mike Schur and Morgan Sackett, the producer, gave me this amazing Woodstock
07:34poster with my face on it and all the bands that were playing at Woodstock.
07:39Oh, my God.
07:40Including my own.
07:41It was the coolest thing.
07:43It's, you know.
07:44That's incredible.
07:45We really are our characters.
07:46Yeah.
07:47Yeah, we kind of are.
07:48Well, I'm a little more Mona than I even like to admit.
07:51Yeah.
07:52I mean, she's unusual.
07:53Yeah.
07:54But how do you describe?
07:55My character describes her, I walk across the street, I wait for the light, I go on the
08:00crosswalk.
08:01Mona does cartwheels into the traffic.
08:03That's kind of what she is.
08:04Why not?
08:05Yeah.
08:06They'll stop.
08:07Yeah.
08:08Well, let's take a break.
08:09As always, we have someone in the audience to help us out.
08:11Hi, Kelly.
08:12I'm Joanna.
08:13It's incredible to be here with you, Ted, and Mary.
08:16Ted, not to date the both of us, but I've been watching you since 1975 in The Doctors.
08:21And Mary, I've been hooked on your work since the dead of winter, which I watch every year.
08:25Aww.
08:26When I think of both of you, I think of great actors and great people with the Bob Hope Humanitarian
08:31Award as proof.
08:32Stay here.
08:33Kelly, Ted, and Mary have more coming next.
08:35Yeah!
08:36I'm a private investigator.
08:37What?
08:38I'm an undercover private investigator.
08:39I recorded our first kiss with a spy camera, but I deleted it.
08:55It wasn't pervy.
08:56Also, I stole your purse for the case.
08:59And I feel bad about it.
09:00Because even though we just met, I like you.
09:04And I don't want to lie to you.
09:06Anymore.
09:07Anyway, this is all under the heading of, I'm an undercover private investigator.
09:13We are back with Ted Danson and Mary's Team Birdhood.
09:14That was a look at their Netflix series, The Mail on the Inside.
09:23Season two is out now.
09:25I love the show.
09:26Um, I do hear that y'all do something very cute on set and I wanna know why.
09:30You whisper to each other like right before you- Is this a lie or real?
09:33or real no it's true okay it's just did it yeah yeah we did it right before we came out here
09:38what do you say well i studied when i was young i studied with sandy meisner who was a great
09:44acting teacher kind of maybe the most famous one in america at the neighborhood playhouse here
09:50and he studied this same method and so when we want to connect and not get distracted by everything
09:58else we just say sandy and that was that was that connects us you can't fake being there you either
10:05are there or you're not and so many times you're tempted to go oh let me show you how good i am
10:11you know or some some version of not being there so that was kind of but he was my teacher i adored
10:17him and it grounds me and it grounds him too so it is amazing to watch i've been on sets and it's like
10:25people will just keep talking and then all of a sudden it's like some serious scene and i'm like
10:30that's an incredible gift like that y'all can do that like it's it's i mean it's acting i get it
10:35but like it's it's just an incredible gift when it's done well um but now we know we just got to
10:40say sandy i think people who talk and then start to sing are kind of yeah we kind of are impressed
10:45with that i thought you were gonna say i think people that talk and then can stop at some point
10:49and i was like you're funny i like you okay so wait i hear and thank you um i i hear that you
10:56got a note specifically that um was it to act less in love yeah is it which come on
11:03it's like fake it's so beautiful like you got a note to be you it's a note about me being too
11:11you know yeah that i do am madly in love with my wife too and a note that i'm a bad actor that i was
11:18playing the end of the story instead of you know the beginning so it it's a little bit
11:23blurry i assume yeah yeah uh this year uh mary and ted were the first couple to get the bob hope
11:30humanitarian award at the emmys and they both honor their parents and their speech how do you feel like
11:36your parents impacted you you know when we were told we got this award if we didn't feel that
11:44deserving to be honest it's it's not how you think of yourself you just you do it too you just do what
11:49you can yeah to raise awareness and help people and um but uh i thought about where so where does
11:58this desire come from and i thought about how my dad was a freight train conductor um one time we
12:05were talking and i realized he's supposed to throw the they they used to call them hobos off the train
12:11right the people who are you know down on their luck and trying to get from one place to another
12:17he was supposed to make them get off the train and he he he followed all the rules at work but not that
12:24one because he just said i can't kick a guy when he's down i just can't do that and and that was that
12:31went in my head as a very young child is like yeah we don't treat people that way you don't kick
12:37somebody when they're down you know you try to lift them up and and that was just he didn't do
12:42under others and nobody called him a humanitarian but he was just a good person you know yeah amazing
12:49dad yeah about your parents how are you impacted yeah my mom went to church a lot and so that an
12:55episcopal church and that was very much part of uh our upbringing my father was an archaeologist so
13:01that's all over the southwest it was cool but you're sitting there realizing there's a lot that
13:07comes before you as you you know you see these skulls or other uh you know artifacts from thousands
13:14of years ago so the message that he actually said but i kind of walked away with was this this time is
13:21not just about you it's about your stewardship of what you've been given yeah i think that played on
13:28me later in life and then you have the miracle of grandchildren and you really want to leave the
13:35world a better place and it sort of speeds up your activism that's what's happened to me i will tell
13:40you it is very different conversations with my friends that have no children they're just like
13:45they'll be fine i'm like okay okay somebody's got to carry all um everybody give it up for mary
13:52christine virgin and ted dancing season two of their show a man on the inside is streaming now on
13:58netflix we've got an organization helping unhoused youth next we'll be right back
14:02welcome back everybody the holidays are almost here it's a time of year we try to put even

19:32it's so exciting yeah oh you have the best smile ever um well this this shopping spree is just one
19:38way uh you continue to support covenant house right yes um just recently i used my voice to in washington
19:45dc and i was able to sit down with congressmen and the senators to discuss what covenant house is about
19:51overcoming homelessness and why we need more funding for youth shelters yeah so if i didn't have that
19:59example of people that believed in me then i would not be where i am today if it wasn't for covenant
20:04house well anita what does it mean to you to be able to support the residents of covenant well i have
20:09to tell you it's an honor to be here representing ulta beauty yeah and the amazing work the ulta beauty

20:48season to be brighter what we could have done and have done for the covenant house in new york is just
20:54tremendous we've done a lot with the covenant house and we're so proud of our partnership
21:03but we want to do more this year yeah and so we are going to do an additional donation
21:09$15,000 to the covenant house

22:27get to a few commercials coming up something we look forward to every year we're surprising a high
22:32school choir with big news for the holidays stay right here
22:49welcome back everybody just outside our studio crews are putting the finishing touches on this
22:54year's rockefella center christmas tree it's beautiful it officially lights up on wednesday december
23:00third that's a week from tomorrow part of christmas and rockefella center uh each year nbc for new
23:05york and telemundo 47 invite me and my music director jason halbert to select one star choir
23:11from the tri-state area to perform on the broadcast here's a look back at some of the winning choirs
23:17this year 57 choirs into the competition 72 choirs into the competition 76 choirs into the competition
23:24ps103 is the winner you guys are going to rockefeller
23:32the winning choir is ps14
23:39high tech high is the winner
23:40neptune high school is the winner you're going to sing at the tree lighting
23:56jason is joining me now how do you feel re-watching the winning choirs i love it i mean you know this
24:02is one of my favorite times of the year i think because we know how much choir meant to us growing
24:05up and so it's such a cool thing to be a part of such a huge stage yeah i would have died yeah that would
24:10have been crazy yeah well let's get to this year's winner so once again it was a tough choice it really
24:15was there were some really talented choirs we have some great choreography this year some great
24:18arrangements yeah but this one choir you know i'm a little bit of a nerd this one choir was wearing
24:22like renaissance festival robes they do magicals which is right up your alley sir i gotta say that one
24:28won me over but it wasn't just that it was their arrangements it was their choreography they added like
24:33body percussion to the whole thing and so the winning choir this year is and tv wants a dramatic pause
24:40and a drum roll and a guitar roll and a whole band roll
24:50yes gold and blues choir from franklin high school in somerset new jersey
24:54all right
24:59all right we're gonna show y'all their audition shapes right now here you go
25:03this is my favorite part y'all though the golden blues choir still doesn't know they've won so we
25:25have news for new york's natalie pascarella outside the choir room at the school right now
25:30the kids just think they're finalists right now so natalie the kids can't hear us right
25:35no kelly they definitely can't hear us you can hear them and see them warming up over my shoulder i
25:40cannot wait for you all to meet these kids they are so talented you're gonna be blown away all right
25:45well natalie don't go anywhere because when we come back those kiddos are in for a big surprise they're
25:49going to find out they're performing at the world famous christmas and rockefeller center tree lighting
25:53you don't want to miss this
26:06all right welcome back i'm here with my music director jason halbert and each year nbc for
26:10new york and telemundo 47 invite us to select one choir from the tri-state area to perform at
26:16christmas and rockefeller center wednesday december 3rd this year we chose the amazing golden blues
26:21choir from franklin high school in somerset new jersey but here is the coolest part they still
26:26don't know they've won we have news for new york's natalie pascarella at the school right
26:30now where the kids just think they're finalists so natalie who do you have with you right now kelly
26:36so excited to be here i am joined by the choir director here at franklin high kira radvansky and
26:42this is so cool she's actually a former student of the school and about three years ago she took over
26:48from her former teacher which is really cool she heads up the magical choir and they are known as
26:54the golden blues everybody say hi to kelly hey oh yeah as you can tell we're all thrilled to be here
27:02uh mrs radvansky talk a little bit about what exactly a magical choir is a magical choir it is a
27:08chamber choir so that means it's a smaller choir by design uh we sing a lot of renaissance music so
27:15more on the classical side of things and we go out into our community this is really a service being
27:20in this group and um so we go to our elementary schools we'll find you'll find us in churches and
27:26senior citizen um homes and what makes us really unique though is that in the spring we have an alter
27:32ego we do a little pop acapella uh contemporary sound they're hard at work they're hard at work
27:38so we want to bring in the kids now uh the students of the magical choir golden blues okay let's talk
27:45with abigail and miles abigail talk a little bit about you said when you were a child you watched this
27:51choir yes uh when i was young um like throughout elementary school i would always go to my town's
27:58tree lighting events and churches and they would always be performing and i just remember thinking
28:03to myself back then like this is part of a group that like i want to be part of it so bad and i want

31:40We have more holiday goodness on the way with some DIY decorating tips.
31:44Welcome back.
31:58Thanksgiving is days away, people.
32:00Well, that means behind the scenes, our team is busy getting ready.
32:04Our set looks so ridiculous every year.
32:06The holiday transformation is incredible.
32:08And here with a sneak peek and tips for our own holiday decorations, let's welcome back the Kelly Clarkson Show art director, Kate Taylor.
32:15Give it up for her.
32:17Look, y'all do it.
32:19First of all, you look gorgeous.
32:21This is your color.
32:22And, Sally, y'all do such a great job every year, but what's happening this year?
32:25What's going on?
32:26So this year, we're going to do a cabin Christmas.
32:28Thanks snowy.
32:29Love it.
32:30Yeah, it's going to be really fun.
32:31Thanks snowy Montana cabin in the woods.
32:33Pink it.
32:34Warm colors, lots of patterns, fun textures.
32:38Yeah.
32:38Let's start with the trees, though.
32:39These are beautiful.
32:40This year, we're partnering again with our friends at Balsam Hill, and they've sent us the most beautiful trees.
32:45This is the Aspen Silver Fir, and I love this tree.
32:48It's so natural and has such an organic silhouette.
32:51It's really pretty.
32:52So we're going to put these around the outer edges of the set so that it looks like we're looking out at the Montana wilderness, and I think it's going to be really pretty and effective.
32:59Yes.
33:00Okay.
33:00All right.
33:01So one thing I want to mention is that this year, Balsam Hill has a big push to make sustainable trees.
33:06Yeah.
33:06And so the cool part about this tree is that the needles are made with plant-based plastic that's derived from sugar cane.
33:13Yeah, Balsam Hill.
33:13Which is so cool.
33:14Okay.
33:14And they're really soft.
33:15I know.
33:15We felt them going to go.
33:16I love that.
33:16I always take that into consideration.
33:17But also sturdy because they'll hold the ornament.
33:19Absolutely.
33:20I like decorating.
33:22But I love that you're going to pull out this tree and reuse it year after year, and it's made with sustainable materials.
33:27It's really cool.
33:27Yeah.
33:28Or you just keep it up in your house.
33:30Or you do that and have some extra care.
33:32You're too lazy.
33:34I don't know anyone that does that.
33:35Okay.
33:36What else?
33:36What else we got here?
33:37Let's go over and look at this tree.
33:38So this is going to be our hero tree on set, and I love this tree.
33:42I am so happy.
33:43This is the Aspen Estate Fur Renewed Tree, and it's also a gorgeous tree.
33:47It has a much fuller silhouette, but it's so beautiful and natural looking.
33:51And the needles on this one are made from your water bottle caps.
33:56So it's recycled plastic, and 30% of it's made from your water bottle caps, which is really cool, right?
34:02I love that.
34:02I love that they care, and they're doing that.
34:04That's awesome.
34:05It's so neat.
34:06These velvet little numbers are my favorite.
34:08Well, we're featuring the Rustic Elegance Ornament Collection this year, and I love that collection because the ornaments look vintage.
34:16Look how cool these are.
34:17I love the velvet ones.
34:18Yeah.
34:18They're so cool.
34:18And that's the other favorite part about this collection is that it varies the textures.
34:22So if I can give you one tip this year when you're decorating your tree at home, it's to vary the texture of your ornaments.
34:29Don't just hang all shiny ones.
34:31If you do some shiny, some matte, some velvet, I've even added in these little birds with feathers and mirrored stars.
34:38It really creates, like, a depth and dimension that you couldn't get otherwise, and you end up with a very professional-looking tree.
34:44I love that.
34:45So we're going to decorate a few sizes of trees for set.
34:47This is a 7 1⁄2 foot.
34:49We're also going to do a 9-foot tree.
34:51Yeah.
34:51Obviously, we don't have to worry about ceiling height in here, but at home, when you're choosing the right size tree, you always want to choose a tree that's 6 to 12 inches lower than your ceiling.
35:01Don't Chevy chase the moment.
35:02That's right.
35:03This way, you have plenty of space for your topper, and it'll be perfect.
35:06So if you have 8- or 9-foot ceilings, which is the most common, go for a 7 1⁄2-foot tree.
35:11Yeah.
35:11Because you'll have a big, beautiful tree that'll fill the space, but you'll have room for your topper, and you won't end up with a disaster.
35:17All right.
35:17What's next?
35:18So the last thing I want to talk about is alternative uses for trees around your home.
35:23Okay.
35:23This is a really easy tablescape.
35:26I love these little birch trees.
35:27I love them.
35:28They're so great.
35:29First of all, they're really fun to fluff out with your kids.
35:31They come together really quickly.
35:33I varied the height between 24 and 36 inches.
35:36They're branchy enough that they don't obstruct the view across the table, which is important, right?
35:41Mm-hmm.
35:41They're battery-
35:42We're doing this at dinner.
35:43Yeah, exactly.
35:44They're battery-operated, which I love, so you don't have to worry about any cords.
35:47I've just laid down a beautiful runner.
35:50I've used some battery-operated garland that I've tucked them into, added a little shimmer garland,
35:54and then I've finished off my play setting with the bows, the nod back to the tree.
35:58That's really cute.
35:59I love these.
36:00It comes together in under 10 minutes, let's be honest.
36:02By the time you finish the tree, you're tired, so this is really quick.
36:05Because your kids say they're going to help, but then they don't.
36:07And then they don't, and you regret all your life choices.
36:10So this is really easy, and they're wintry, so you can leave them up after the holidays.
36:14I even used them last year for my son's first birthday in January because I did a woodland theme,
36:18and they look so fun with the little animals around them.
36:20It was really great.
36:22Thank you so much, Kate.
36:23You do such a great job at this.
36:24It is such a beautiful set.
36:26The whole team does such a great job here.
36:29And to our friends at Balsam Hill, thank you for helping us deliver holiday magic again this year.
36:34Balsam Hill has the most realistic, true-to-nature, reusable Christmas trees and decor.
36:39You can order everything you need this holiday season and for years to come online.
36:43You can also see their products in person right now at Rockefeller Center's Opry Skate Chalets,
36:48each decorated with its own festive theme.
36:50It's magical.
36:51It's overlooking the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink.
36:53We'll be right back with What I'm Liking.
36:56We'll be right back with What I'm Liking.
37:09All right, everybody.
37:10We are almost out of time.
37:11But before we go, let's share one more very important story.
37:14This is What I'm Liking.
37:19November is Native American Heritage Month, which celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of indigenous Americans.
37:25It also shines a light on the struggles within indigenous communities.
37:29According to the National Institute of Justice, four in five native women will experience violence in their lifetime.
37:35It's a devastating statistic that's explored in the new documentary She Cried That Day.
37:39The crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women is not going to be an easy issue to fix.
37:47But we need to start somewhere.
37:51We have the filmmaker dialed in from Atlanta, where she watches on WSB TV.
38:04Everybody say hello to Amanda Erickson.
38:07Hi, Amanda.
38:09Well, this is a really underreported story, right?
38:14Absolutely.
38:15This is a crisis that's been allowed to hide in plain sight.
38:19Because of a lack of communication and a lack of resources,
38:23Native families have had to take matters into their own hands in order to get answers and get justice.
38:30Oh, my goodness.
38:32Well, you say this film is deeply personal for you.
38:34Tell everybody how.
38:36Well, for me, I'm San Carlos Apache from the Whitewater clan out in Arizona.
38:41But I grew up outside of community on the East Coast.
38:45So it was really my reconnection with my culture.
38:48And I was blown away by the strength and the power of these young women.
38:53And we were lucky enough to have a family, Dionne Thomas' family, open their arms and their lives to us
39:01and really show us what Native families are having to go through in order to get justice.
39:07And when you watch this film, I feel like their openness, their vulnerability,
39:13allows you to get an intimate look at what families that are dealing with this crisis are going through.
39:20And it also shows you the undeniable power and beauty of the Native women on the front lines of this issue.
39:29It's incredible that you're spotlighting this since so many people aren't.
39:34And, you know, you're talking about one family, which I assume can only be from four out of five women being affected.
39:39So many families that are going to be impacted by you taking the time to shine a light on this.
39:44Thank you so much, Amanda, for sharing and making this.
39:47I'm liking your place right now.
39:48So that's not all, though.
39:50Our season one partner, Pilot Pen, Makers of Friction, the go-to risk for Pen of the Kelly Clarkson Show,
39:54want to support the work you're doing.
39:56So they're writing the coalition to stop violence against Native women's a check for $1,000 just to pitch in.
40:01Thank you so much.
40:03It's incredibly important what you're doing.
40:06Thank you to all our guests this hour.
40:07We're Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Leora, Lawrence Zarian, Corey Morris, Anita Ryan, Jason Hubbard,
40:14Sarah Bansky, Natalie Pasquarela, the Golden Blues choir, of course, Kate Taylor,
40:19and our friends at NBC4 New York and Telemundo 37.
40:22Y'all have a great day in the SmackDown.
