00:00Welcome to the Kelly Clarkson show. Today we are starting with the Kelly Oki encore first performed by one of the greatest singer-songwriters out there today. I was honored to have her join me for a whole hour of songs and stories earlier this year.
00:28Here's me and my band, y'all, with Sarah McLachlan's Building a Mystery.
00:58From faith that died before Jesus came, building a mystery.
01:09You woke up screaming aloud, a prayer from your secret God.
01:20Your feet off our fears and hold back your tears.
01:25Your tears all give us a tantrum, and I know it all will.
01:32Just when we need one, when the evening's thin.
01:38You're a beautiful, a beautiful dumb man.
01:45You're setting up your razor wide side.
01:51Yeah, you're working, building a mystery.
01:56Holding on, holding it in.
02:02Yeah, you're working, building a mystery.
02:08One more time, give it up for my band, y'all.
02:29All right.
02:34Our first guests today have been described as American treasures by every single person in America.
02:40It's a fact.
02:41Look it up.
02:42One is an Oscar and Golden Globe winning actress.
02:44The other is a multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor.
02:47And this year they became the first couple ever to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award,
02:52which honors media professionals whose philanthropic work has had a lasting impact.
02:56They're incredible people.
02:57You can see them in season two of Man on the Inside.
03:01It's available now on Netflix.
03:03Everybody give it up for Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson.
03:22We're kind of in the same color palette today.
03:39Oh, we are.
03:40Yes.
03:41I love that.
03:42I love having y'all here.
03:43Congrats on season two.
03:46Yes.
03:47You play love interest this season, yeah?
03:50Yes.
03:51What's happening with your characters this season?
03:53Or you're new this season, but yeah.
03:55I have solved the case.
03:57It's nine months later.
03:59We're in a different location, obviously.
04:01We're in a liberal arts college.
04:04And I am hot on the trail of many different suspects.
04:09And I bump into Mary.
04:12And all my talents as a private investigator go flying out the window because I'm just smitten.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Obviously.
04:22Look at that smile.
04:23So what's your character like?
04:24You're new this season, yeah?
04:25I'm new this season.
04:26And I'm a professor who long ago was a rock star.
04:32I opened for Fleetwood Mac.
04:35Yeah.
04:36And I had a song that was quite famous.
04:41But I became a sort of one hit wonder.
04:44And so I end up being this professor at this college.
04:48And I'm also one of his suspects.
04:50Okay.
04:51Yeah.
04:52It gets even juicier.
04:53Yeah.
04:54Okay.
04:55How did you get involved?
04:56I mean, it was just this little miracle.
04:59Because I used to run lines with him.
05:01And I do confess that when I would run lines with him, I was always thinking this show is
05:06so funny and so good.
05:07I wish I was on it.
05:09But I had to, like, not lay that on him.
05:11You know, I tried not to.
05:12Yeah.
05:13And then finally at the end of season one, Mike Schur, who's the brilliant creator of
05:21that show and Parks and Rec and The Good Place, he said, you know, we are thinking about
05:27a part for you in season two.
05:30And it took everything not to just scream right in his face.
05:33You're trying to be casual about it?
05:34You're like, oh, that would be cool, I guess.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Oh, cool.
05:37I'll try to fit it in.
05:38So, no, I love his work and the writers and the vibe of the show.
05:45And needless to say, he's my favorite actor.
05:47So, it's pretty great.
05:48Y'all are so cute as a couple.
05:51It's so cute.
05:52We'll try to tamper down.
05:54No.
05:55Shine.
05:56I love it.
05:57Shine.
05:58I want to talk about this.
05:59I said right when you came out.
06:00Look, I'm a newly found fan of Jessie Buckley.
06:02Like, she's incredible.
06:03Oh, wow.
06:04And it's coming out.
06:05It's so good.
06:06All of it.
06:07But I, as a singer as well, and you wrote a song that she sang.
06:09Yes, I wrote it with Caitlin Smith, who you love.
06:12I love Caitlin Smith.
06:13I know.
06:14So, we wrote it together and we just, we loved the experience.
06:22And then she just knocked it.
06:23If you watch the movie Wild Rose, you'll see our song at the end of it.
06:28We also wrote it with Kate York.
06:29No, you're such a great songwriter.
06:30Yeah.
06:31All the three of us wrote that.
06:32And you wrote a song in this series as well.
06:33Can I jump in?
06:34She won, you know, a Critics' Choice Award for that.
06:37She tied with Elton John for that song.
06:39I didn't know that.
06:40Which is, which is...
06:41Oh!
06:42Thank you for bragging.
06:43I didn't know that.
06:44I should have known that.
06:45That's incredible.
06:47I just liked it.
06:48I didn't even, you didn't even need an award.
06:50I just thought it was really badass.
06:51Yeah.
06:52Hey, if you like it so much, you want to sing it someday.
06:54No.
06:55I know.
06:56I literally was like, that's a karaoke in the making.
06:58I was very excited about it.
06:59But you also wrote for this, this show as well.
07:02I did.
07:03And you usually don't sing it, right?
07:04You usually give the song.
07:05I am, well, I did sing in this one because supposedly I was a singer when I was young.
07:10But anyway, we had fun and this song turned out really great.
07:14And I wrote it with Troy Burgess.
07:16Tell them the name of the band, which I love.
07:18Oh, the band.
07:19Lavender Highway.
07:20Yes, Lavender Highway.
07:21It's so 70s.
07:22It's so 70s and perfect.
07:24And I was like, this should actually be a band.
07:26I know.
07:27And for a gift, Mike Schur and Morgan Sackett, the producer, gave me this amazing Woodstock
07:34poster with my face on it and all the bands that were playing at Woodstock.
07:39Oh, my God.
07:40Including my own.
07:41It was the coolest thing.
07:42It's, you know.
07:43That's incredible.
07:44We really are our characters.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Yeah.
07:47We kind of are.
07:48Well, I'm a little more Mona than I even like to admit.
07:51Yeah.
07:52I mean, she's unusual.
07:53Yeah.
07:54But how do you describe?
07:55My character describes her, I walk across the street, I wait for the light, I go in the
07:59crosswalk.
08:00Mona does cartwheels into the traffic.
08:02That's kind of what she is.
08:03Why not?
08:04Yeah.
08:05They'll stop.
08:06Yeah.
08:07If they know it's good for them.
08:08Okay.
08:09Let's take a quick break.
08:10As always, we have someone in the audience to help us out.
08:11Hi, Kelly.
08:12I'm Joanna.
08:13It's incredible to be here with you, Ted, and Mary.
08:15Ted, not to date the both of us, but I've been watching you since 1975 in The Doctors.
08:20And Mary, I've been hooked on your work since the dead of winter, which I watch every year.
08:25When I think of both of you, I think of great actors and great people with the Bob Hope Humanitarian
08:30Award as proof.
08:31Stay here.
08:32Kelly, Ted, and Mary have more coming next.
08:34I'm a private investigator.
08:46What?
08:47I'm an undercover private investigator.
08:49I recorded our first kiss with a spy camera, but I deleted it.
08:54It wasn't pervy.
08:55Also, I stole your purse for the case.
08:58And I feel bad about it.
09:00Because even though we just met, I like you.
09:03And I don't want to lie to you anymore.
09:06Anyway, this is all under the heading of, I'm an undercover private investigator.
09:12This is all the words.
09:13We are back with Ted Danson and Mary's team version.
09:14That was a look at their Netflix series of May on the Inside.
09:15Season two is out now.
09:16I love the show.
09:17I do hear that y'all do something very cute on set, and I want to know why.
09:18You whisper to each other, like right before you, is this a lie or real?
09:33No, it's true.
09:34Okay.
09:35It's true.
09:36Just did it.
09:37Yeah.
09:38Yeah, we did it right before we came out here.
09:39What do you say?
09:40Can I know?
09:41When I was young, I studied with Sandy Meisner, who was a great acting teacher, kind of maybe
09:46the most famous one in America, at the Neighborhood Playhouse here.
09:51And he studied this same method.
09:53And so when we want to connect and not get distracted by everything else, we just say,
09:59Sandy.
10:00And that was, that was, that connects us.
10:03You can't fake being there.
10:05You either are there or you're not.
10:07And so many times you're tempted to go, oh, let me show you how good I am.
10:11You know, or some, some version of not being there.
10:14So that was kind of a...
10:15But he was my teacher.
10:17I adored him and it grounds me and it grounds him too.
10:21So...
10:22It is amazing to watch.
10:23I've been on sets and it's like people will just keep talking and da da da da.
10:27And then all of a sudden it's like some serious scene.
10:29And I'm like, that's an incredible gift.
10:31Like that y'all can do that.
10:33Like it's, it's, I mean, it's acting.
10:34I get it.
10:35But like, it's, it's just an incredible gift when it's done well.
10:38But now we know.
10:39We just got to say Sandy.
10:40Okay.
10:41I think people who talk and then start to sing are kind of...
10:43Yeah, we kind of are impressed with that.
10:45I thought you were going to say, I think people that talk and then can stop at some point.
10:51And I was like, you're funny.
10:52I like you.
10:53Okay.
10:54So wait, I hear, and thank you.
10:55Um, I, I hear that you got a note specifically that, um, was it to act less in love?
11:00Yeah.
11:01Is it?
11:02Which, come on.
11:04It's just like fake.
11:06It's so beautiful.
11:07Like you got a note to be...
11:08It's a note about me being too, you know.
11:11Yeah.
11:12Too in love.
11:13I am madly in love with my wife too.
11:15Yeah.
11:16And a note that I'm a bad actor, that I was playing the end of the story instead of,
11:20you know, the beginning.
11:21So it, it's a little bit aww and a little bit...
11:23Well, the lines get blurry, I assume.
11:24Yeah.
11:25Yeah.
11:26Uh, this year, Mary and Ted were the first couple to get the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award
11:31at the Emmys.
11:32And they both honored their parents and their speech.
11:35How do you feel like your parents impacted you?
11:38You know, when we were told we got this award, we didn't feel that deserving to be honest.
11:45It's a, it's not how you think of yourself.
11:47You just, you do it too.
11:48You just do what you can.
11:49Yeah.
11:50To raise awareness and help people.
11:53Um, but, uh, I thought about where, so where does this desire come from?
11:59And I thought about how my dad, who was a freight train conductor, um, one time we were
12:05talking and I realized he's supposed to throw the, they used to call them hobos off the train,
12:11right?
12:12The people who are, you know, down on their luck and trying to get from one place to another,
12:17he was supposed to make them get off the train.
12:19And he, he, he followed all the rules at work, but not that one.
12:24Because he just said, I can't kick a guy when he's down.
12:28I just can't do that.
12:29And, and that was, that went in my head as a very young child.
12:33It was like, yeah, we don't treat people that way.
12:36You don't kick somebody when they're down, you know, you try to lift them up.
12:39And, and that was just, he didn't do under others.
12:43And nobody called him a humanitarian, but he was just a good person, you know?
12:48Yeah.
12:49Amazing dad.
12:50Yeah.
12:51How about your parents?
12:52How are you impacted?
12:53Yeah.
12:54My mom went to church a lot and so that an Episcopal church.
12:56And that was very much part of our upbringing.
12:59My father was an archeologist, so.
13:01That's cool.
13:02Deeds all over the Southwest.
13:03It was cool, but you're sitting there realizing there's a lot that comes before you as you're,
13:08you know, you see these skulls or other, you know, artifacts from thousands of years ago.
13:15So the message that he actually said, but I kind of walked away with was this, this time
13:21is not just about you.
13:23It's about your stewardship of what you've been given.
13:26Yeah.
13:27I think that played on me later in life.
13:29Mm-hmm.
13:30And then you have the miracle of grandchildren and you really want to leave the world a better
13:35place.
13:36Yeah.
13:37And it sort of speeds up your activism.
13:38That's what's happened to me.
13:39I will tell you, it is very different conversations with my friends that have no children.
13:44They're just like, they'll be fine.
13:46I'm like, okay, okay.
13:48Somebody's got to care, y'all.
13:50Um, everybody give it up for Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson.
13:55Season two of their show, A Man on the Inside is streaming now on Netflix.
13:59We've got an organization helping unhoused youth next.
14:03Welcome back, everybody.
14:18The holidays are almost here.
14:20It's a time of year we try to put even more effort into highlighting organizations doing
14:24great work year-round.
14:26Since 1972, Covenant House has provided immediate and long-term support and housing for youth
14:32facing homelessness across North America.
14:341.5 million to date, so they're incredible.
14:39It's all about providing unconditional love, deep respect, and relentless support to young
14:43people in need.
14:44They're able to do this work in part thanks to private donations and great partners like
14:48Ulta Beauty.
14:49A few days ago, one of the youth ambassadors for Covenant House met up with some friends of
14:53our show at Ulta Beauty to get ready for the holidays.
14:56Take a look.
15:01Today is truly going to be such an amazing day, and I am so excited.
15:05And I'm excited to be surrounded by some beautiful people.
15:08First up, this is Corey Morris.
15:10Hello.
15:11And he's the part of our Kelly Parks and Glam team.
15:13And Corey, I'm just going to say it.
15:14Hairstylist to the stars.
15:15Yes.
15:18And this is Leora, and she is the youth ambassador from Covenant House.
15:22We are so happy to have you here with us.
15:24I'm so happy to be here with you guys.
15:26Oh, we get a hug.
15:27I am so excited because the Kelly Clarkson Show and Ulta Beauty are teaming up together
15:33to spread some holiday cheer to everyone at the Covenant House.
15:37And I know the holidays can be really tough, so what does that mean for the residents of
15:40the Covenant House?
15:41It was tough for me.
15:42I didn't really care for the holidays, but Covenant House changed that for me.
15:46Oh, I see the smile.
15:47Oh.
15:48So now you love the holidays.
15:49Yes.
15:50Now I love the holidays.
15:51Covenant House gave me my voice back, and they taught me how to use it.
15:55I wish I would have known about Covenant House when I was a kid because I, too, was kicked
15:59out of the house.
16:00Being kicked out as a teen and not having a home was pretty devastating.
16:04I mean, if it wasn't for the family that took me in, I don't think I'd be who I am today.
16:09When you grow up with nothing, even the small acts of kindness are a miracle.
16:13It's the holidays, and it's all about giving.
16:17Oh, my God.
16:18Peach and Lily, guys.
16:19I love Peach and Lily.
16:20And they have this amazing discovery kit that has actually everything in it that you need.
16:24I'm going to discover that.
16:25Yes.
16:26Covenant House is all about fresh starts and finding stability.
16:31Okay, kids.
16:33You know what I believe.
16:34I believe in body care.
16:35And when you take care of your body, you lift your spirit.
16:39And nobody does that better than Sulte Sedaro.
16:42And they believe that beauty is an attitude.
16:45It is.
16:46Yes.
16:47So let me ask you this.
16:48Do you think, Leora, the residents at Covenant House would like that?
16:51They definitely would.
16:52Give me a couple.
16:53Oh, because it smells so good, right?
16:54Yeah.
16:55Let's keep jogging.
16:58Love this.
17:01I love Redken.
17:03Redken's amazing.
17:04I use Redken on everybody, everything.
17:07It's a go-to.
17:08If you want Corey to smile, just say Redken.
17:11We know that that's his buzzword.
17:13I love this dry shampoo.
17:15The dry shampoo is a must-have.
17:17It's always in my kit.
17:18So Corey has Redken, and Leora has Elf Cosmetics.
17:22She was a kid in a candy store.
17:24Oh, my goodness.
17:25It's beautiful.
17:27I love Elf products because it helped me regain my confidence while I was in Covenant House.
17:34Guys, this is a full-arm functioning salon.
17:36Yes, it's all in one.
17:38This store is huge.
17:40And I feel like we just scratched the surface.
17:42Look at how beautiful these bottles are.
17:44Beautiful.
17:45These are perfect gifts for the residents.
17:47Self-care isn't a priority when you're in survival mode.
17:50That's why these gifts will be so meaningful.
17:53You know, I love Ulta Beauty, right, because they have everything.
17:55But did you know they have so much more than just beauty and makeup and skin care?
17:58They have wellness products like this milk and honey deodorant.
18:02It not only smells good, it's comfortable to wear, and it makes you feel confident.
18:08Put this in the bag.
18:09This is amazing.
18:10It all goes in the bag.
18:11If you like it, it goes in the bag.
18:12Okay.
18:13Let's go.
18:14Put it in the bag.
18:15Okay.
18:16I want to thank Ulta Beauty for their generosity.
18:18And I want to thank the Kelly Clarkson Show for sharing our story and reminding people
18:22what hope looks like.
18:23How do you feel, and how do you think the residents are going to feel when they open
18:27up their gifts?
18:28The residents are going to light up when they open up these gifts.
18:31For some of them, it's not just a gift.
18:34I feel amazing.
18:35I'm giving back to the youth that are in my position that I was just in a year ago.
18:40And Covenant House has been doing this for 50 years.
18:43Yeah.
18:44I'm ready to give some holiday gifts.
18:46Ulta Beauty knows how to do this.
18:47This is a lot.
18:48It's a lot, but we can do it.
18:50Do it?
18:51All right.
18:52We have Leora joining us now along with Anita Ryan, Ulta Beauty's Chief Human Resource Officer
19:02and President of the Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation.
19:05We've also got Lawrence and Corey in the audience.
19:07I'll give it up for Lawrence and Corey.
19:09Well, Leora, how do you feel the shopping spree went?
19:14Did it go well?
19:15Oh, my God.
19:16It was so exciting.
19:18It was so much products to choose from.
19:20Yeah.
19:21And self-care equals self-confidence, so.
19:24Yeah, it makes you feel good.
19:25Yeah.
19:26It makes you feel good.
19:27And then your confidence skyrockets, everything changes.
19:29Yes.
19:30That domino effect.
19:31Yeah, exactly.
19:32Yeah.
19:33It was so fun and so exciting.
19:34Oh, you have the best smile ever.
19:36Well, this shopping spree is just one way you continue to support Covenant House, right?
19:41Yes.
19:42Just recently I used my voice in Washington, D.C., and I was able to sit down with congressmen
19:48and the senators to discuss what Covenant House is about, overcoming homelessness, and why we need more funding for youth shelters.
19:56Yeah.
19:57So, if I didn't have that example of people that believed in me, then I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Covenant House.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Well, Anita, what does it mean to you to be able to support the residents of Covenant?
20:08Well, I have to tell you it's an honor to be here representing Ulta Beauty.
20:12Yeah.
20:13And the amazing work the Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation does to empower women and teens.
20:17We've worked with Covenant House for four years and you've heard from Lyra's story that it's amazing and they provide housing and really skilled needs to help them be the better person and get out there.
20:33So, we couldn't be more thrilled of our partnership with them.
20:36And, Kelly, thank you to you and your team, right, for allowing us to show the power beauty can do and spreading that season cheer.
20:44Restore dignity and confidence.
20:46Yeah.
20:47The season cheer in the holiday season, to be brighter, what we could have done and have done for the Covenant House in New York is just tremendous.
20:55Wow.
20:58We've done a lot with the Covenant House and we're so proud of our partnership, but we want to do more this year.
21:05Yeah.
21:06And so, we are going to do an additional donation.
21:11$15,000 to the Covenant House.
21:14Wow.
21:15I need that kind of energy.
21:16Oh my gosh.
21:17That's so incredible.
21:18Take a deep breath.
21:19Because there's more.
21:20Okay?
21:21So, not only are we going to do the additional $15,000, but based on everything you have been through, your leadership and your courage to speak and do what you do,
21:22we are going to do an additional $5,000, we are going to do an additional $5,000 investment for your future, for you.
21:29Oh.
21:30Oh.
21:31Oh.
21:32Oh.
21:33Oh.
21:34Oh.
21:35It's a good investment.
21:37It's a good investment.
21:38It's a good investment.
21:39We know the return that everybody's going to get from it.
21:40Yeah.
21:41We got tissues.
21:42Brennan, we have tissues.
21:44You're welcome.
21:50Oh my goodness.
21:52Oh my goodness.
21:53Oh, my goodness.
21:54I'm just crying because knowing what I went through, I could have been dead, you know?
22:03know the return that everybody's gonna get from it yeah we got tissues Brennan we have tissues
22:07thank you thank you oh my goodness I'm just crying because knowing what I went through
22:15I could have been dead you know but that night I found Covenant House I never looked back it

23:09one star choir from the tri-state area to perform on the broadcast here's a look back at some of
23:15the winning choirs this year 57 choirs into the competition 72 choirs into the competition 76

23:41Neptune high school is the winner
23:47The winner!
23:49You're going to sing at the tree lighting.
23:56Jason is joining me now.
23:58How do you feel re-watching the winning choirs?
24:01I love it.
24:01I mean, you know, this is one of my favorite times of the year.
24:03I think it's because we know how much choir meant to us growing up.
24:05And so it's such a cool thing to be a part of.
24:07Such a huge stage.
24:08Yeah.
24:08I would have died.
24:10Yeah, that would have been crazy.
24:11Yeah.
24:11Well, let's get to this year's winner.
24:13So once again, it was a tough choice.
24:15It really was.
24:15There were some really talented choirs.
24:16We had some great choreography this year, some great arrangements.
24:19Yeah.
24:19But this one choir, you know, I'm a little bit of a nerd.
24:21This one choir was wearing, like, Renaissance Festival robes.
24:23They do magicals.
24:24Which is right up your alley, sir.
24:26I got to say, that one won me over.
24:29But it wasn't just that.
24:30It was their arrangements.
24:31It was their choreography.
24:32They added, like, body percussion to the whole thing.
24:34And so the winning choir this year is, and TV wants a dramatic pause.
24:40And a drum roll.
24:43And a guitar roll.
24:43And a whole band roll.
24:50Yes.
24:51Gold and blues choir from Franklin High School in Somerset, New Jersey.
24:54All right.
24:54All right.
24:55We're going to show y'all their audition tape right now.
25:02Here you go.
25:02And every hall, prepare a real room.
25:08Have heaven and nature sing and heaven and nature sing and heaven and nature sing and heaven and nature sing and heaven and nature sing.
25:19All right.
25:19All right.
25:20This is my favorite part, y'all, though.
25:23The Golden Blues Choir still doesn't know they've won.
25:25So we have news for New York's Natalie Pascarella outside the choir room at the school right now.
25:30The kids just think they're finalists right now.
25:32So, Natalie, the kids can't hear us, right?
25:34No, Kelly, they definitely can't hear us.
25:37You can hear them and see them warming up over my shoulder.
25:39I cannot wait for you all to meet these kids.
25:42They are so talented.
25:43You're going to be blown away.
25:45All right.
25:45Well, Natalie, don't go anywhere because when we come back, those kiddos are in for a big surprise.
25:49They're going to find out they're performing at the world-famous Christmas in Rockefeller Center, Tree Lighting.
25:53You don't want to miss this.
26:01All right.
26:06Welcome back.
26:07I'm here with my music director, Jason Halbert, and each year, NBC4 New York and Telemundo 47 invite us to select one choir from the tri-state area to perform at Christmas in Rockefeller Center Wednesday, December 3rd.
26:19This year, we chose the amazing Golden Blues Choir from Franklin High School in Somerset, New Jersey.
26:24But here is the coolest part.
26:25They still don't know they've won.
26:27We have news for New York's Natalie Pascarella at the school right now where the kids just think they're finalists.
26:32So, Natalie, who do you have with you right now?
26:35Well, Kelly, so excited to be here.
26:37I am joined by the choir director here at Franklin High, Kira Radvanski.
26:42And this is so cool.
26:43She's actually a former student of the school.
26:46And about three years ago, she took over from her former teacher, which is really cool.
26:51She heads up the magical choir, and they are known as the Golden Blues.
26:55Everybody say hi to Kelly.
26:56Hi, Kelly.
26:58Hey.
26:59Yeah, as you can tell, we're all thrilled to be here.
27:02Mrs. Radvanski, talk a little bit about what exactly a magical choir is.
27:06A magical choir, it is a chamber choir.
27:09So that means it's a smaller choir by design.
27:12We sing a lot of Renaissance music, so more on the classical side of things.
27:16And we go out into our community.
27:18This is really a service, being in this group.
27:21And so we go to our elementary schools.
27:24You'll find us in churches and senior citizen homes.
27:28And what makes us really unique, though, is that in the spring, we have an alter ego.
27:33We do a little pop a cappella contemporary sound.
27:37They're hard at work.
27:38They're hard at work.
27:38So we want to bring in the kids now, the students of the magical choir, Golden Blues.
27:44Okay, let's talk with Abigail and Miles.
27:46Abigail, talk a little bit about, you said when you were a child, you watched this choir.
27:52Yes.
27:53When I was young, like throughout elementary school, I would always go to my town's tree lighting events and churches.
28:00And they would always be performing.
28:02And I just remember thinking to myself back then, like, this is part of a group that, like, I want to be part of it so bad.
28:08And I want to do exactly what they do and give back to the community and make people happy.
28:12And now I'm here.
28:14Talk about a big opportunity.
28:15What would it mean to be able to perform at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting?
28:19It would be so special.
28:20Music is my passion.
28:21And I can say that for pretty much everybody here.
28:24And it's so great that when we get to bring our different experiences and our different voices together just to create something beautiful like we have.
28:30And we're in our communities.
28:31We bring joy to our communities, our schools, like Ms. Rad said.
28:34And it would be just beautiful if we could bring that to an even bigger stage like Rockefeller Center.
28:38Well, you're on the stage right now.
28:39And I don't know about you, Kelly, but I am ready to hear you all.
28:42So, all right, guys, it's time to show Kelly what you got.
28:45You ready?
28:46Here we go.
28:46Here we go.
29:16Here we go.
29:18Here we go.
29:20One who seems to hear words of the cheer from everywhere, fill in the air.
29:25Oh, it's now praise the sound, I am a little doubt, and it's not the sound.
29:29Here we go.
29:30People sing songs of the cheer, this must assume.
29:33there is something
29:35there is something
29:37there is something
29:37there is something
29:38there is something
29:41there is something
29:42there is something
29:42that I'm having
29:43to talk to everyone
29:45wow
29:48Kelly, oh my goodness
29:50weren't they fantastic
29:52I mean, seriously
29:55just incredible
29:56you can imagine
29:57how fantastic
29:57they would be
29:59at the Rockefeller Center
29:59tree lighting
30:00oh my god
30:01that was so beautiful
30:02I got so excited
30:02That's my favorite Christmas carol to hear.
30:04Oh, my God.
30:05We have exciting news.
30:07After reviewing all the audition tapes,
30:09we are pleased to announce
30:10Franklin High School is the winner.
30:13You guys are going to watch about the Senate.
30:16We're going to sing it to True Lighting.
30:32All right.
30:34I don't know if they can hear me
30:35because they're still freaking out,
30:36which is awesome.
30:37But that is not all, my friends.
30:39NBC4 New York and Telemundo 47
30:41are donating $5,000
30:43to help support your music program.
30:48And wait.
30:50Wait, wait, wait, wait.
30:51I have even more.
30:53Our friends at Bolivar
30:54are kicking in an additional $5,000.
30:57That's $10,000.
30:58That's $10,000.

31:06Plus, Bolivar is giving you
31:07each one of their amazing watches.

31:11I love it.

31:17Thank you, guys, so much.
31:19Thank you, Franklin High School

31:38Y'all don't go anywhere, though.
31:40We have more holiday goodness
31:41on the way
31:41with some DIY decorating tips.
31:56Welcome back.
31:58Thanksgiving is days away, people.
32:00That means behind the scenes,
32:01our team is busy getting ready.
32:04Our set looks so ridiculous every year.
32:06The holiday transformation is incredible.
32:08And here with a sneak peek
32:09and tips for our own holiday decorations,
32:12let's welcome back
32:12the Kelly Clarkson Show art director,
32:14Kate Taylor.
32:15Give it up for her.
32:17Look, y'all do it.
32:19First of all, you look gorgeous.
32:20This is your color.
32:22And secondly, y'all do such a great job every year,
32:24but what's happening this year?
32:25What's going on?
32:26So this year,
32:26we're going to do a cabin Christmas.
32:28Thanks snowy.
32:29Yeah, it's going to be really fun.
32:31Thanks snowy Montana cabin in the woods.
32:33Pink it.
32:34Warm colors, lots of patterns,
32:36fun textures.
32:37Yeah.
32:38Let's start with the trees, though.
32:39These are beautiful.
32:40This year, we're partnering again
32:42with our friends at Balsam Hill,
32:43and they've sent us the most beautiful trees.
32:46This is the Aspen silver fir,
32:47and I love this tree.
32:48It's so natural
32:49and has such an organic silhouette.
32:51It's really pretty.
32:52So we're going to put these
32:53around the outer edges of the set
32:55so that it looks like we're looking out
32:56at the Montana wilderness,
32:57and I think it's going to be
32:58really pretty and effective.
32:59Yes.
33:00Okay.
33:00All right.
33:01So one thing I want to mention
33:02is that this year,
33:03Balsam Hill has a big push
33:04to make sustainable trees.
33:06Yeah.
33:06And so the cool part about this tree
33:08is that the needles are made
33:09with plant-based plastic
33:11that's derived from sugar cane.
33:13Yeah, Balsam Hill.
33:13Which is so cool,
33:14and they're really soft.
33:15I know.
33:15I felt something good.
33:16I love that.
33:16I always take that into consideration.
33:17But also sturdy
33:18because they'll hold the ornament.
33:19Absolutely.
33:20I like decorating.
33:21But I love that you're going
33:22to pull out this tree
33:23and reuse it year after year,
33:25and it's made with sustainable materials.
33:27It's really cool.
33:27Yeah.
33:28Or you just keep it up in your house.
33:30Or you do that
33:31and have some extra care.
33:32You're too lazy.
33:34I don't know anyone that does that.
33:35Okay, what else?
33:36What else we got here?
33:37Let's go over and look at this tree.
33:38So this is going to be
33:39our hero tree on set,
33:41and I love this tree.
33:42I am so happy.
33:43This is the Aspen Estate
33:45Fir Renew Tree,
33:46and it's also a gorgeous tree.
33:47It has a much fuller silhouette,
33:49but it's so beautiful
33:50and natural looking.
33:52And the needles on this one
33:53are made from your water bottle caps.
33:56So it's recycled plastic,
33:58and 30% of it's made
33:59from your water bottle caps,
34:00which is really cool, right?
34:01Yeah.
34:02I love that.
34:02I love that they care,
34:04and they're doing that.
34:04That's awesome.
34:05It's so neat.
34:05These velvet little numbers
34:06are my favorite.
34:08Well, we're featuring
34:09the Rustic Elegance
34:10ornament collection this year,
34:11and I love that collection
34:12because the ornaments look vintage.
34:15Look how cool these are.
34:16I love the velvet ones.
34:17Yeah.
34:18They're so cool.
34:18And that's the other favorite part
34:19about this collection
34:21is that it varies the textures.
34:22So if I can give you
34:23one tip this year
34:24when you're decorating
34:25your tree at home,
34:27it's to vary the texture
34:28of your ornaments.
34:29Don't just hang all shiny ones.
34:31If you do some shiny,
34:33some matte, some velvet,
34:35I've even added in
34:35these little birds
34:36with feathers and mirrored stars,
34:38it really creates
34:39like a depth and dimension
34:40that you couldn't get otherwise,
34:42and you end up
34:42with a very professional
34:43looking tree.
34:44I love that.
34:45So we're going to decorate
34:46a few sizes of trees for a set.
34:47This is a 7 1⁄2 foot.
34:49We're also going to do
34:49a 9-foot tree.
34:50Yeah.
34:51Obviously, we don't have to worry
34:52about ceiling height in here,
34:54but at home,
34:54when you're choosing
34:55the right size tree,
34:56you always want to choose
34:57a tree that's 6 to 12 inches
34:59lower than your ceiling.
35:01Don't Chevy chase the moment.
35:02That's right.
35:02This way, you have plenty
35:04of space for your topper,
35:05and it'll be perfect.
35:06So if you have
35:07an 8 or 9-foot ceiling,
35:08which is the most common,
35:09go for a 7 1⁄2 foot tree.
35:11Yeah.
35:11Because you'll have
35:11a big, beautiful tree
35:12that'll fill the space,
35:14but you'll have room
35:14for your topper,
35:15and you won't end up
35:16with a disaster.
35:16All right.
35:17What's next?
35:18So the last thing
35:19I want to talk about
35:20is alternative uses
35:21for trees around your home.
35:23Okay.
35:23This is a really easy tablescape.
35:25I love these little birch trees.
35:27I love them.
35:28They're so great.
35:29First of all,
35:29they're really fun
35:30to fluff out with your kids.
35:31They come together
35:32really quickly.
35:33I varied the height
35:34between 24 and 36 inches.
35:36They're branchy enough
35:37that they don't obstruct
35:38the view across the table,
35:39which is important, right?
35:41They're battery-
35:41You're not doing this
35:42at dinner.
35:42Yeah, exactly.
35:44They're battery-operated,
35:45which I love,
35:46so you don't have to worry
35:46about any cords.
35:47I've just laid down
35:48a beautiful runner.
35:50I've used some battery-operated
35:51garland that I've tucked
35:52them into,
35:53added a little shimmer garland,
35:54and then I finish off
35:55my play setting
35:56with the boasts.
35:57It's a nod back to the tree.
35:58That's really cute.
35:59I love these.
36:00It comes together
36:01in under 10 minutes.
36:02Let's be honest.
36:02By the time you finish the tree,
36:03you're tired,
36:04so this is really quick.
36:05Because your kids say
36:06they're going to help,
36:06but then they don't.
36:07And then they don't,
36:07and you regret all
36:08your life choices.
36:10So this is really easy,
36:11and they're wintry,
36:12so you can leave them up
36:13after the holidays.
36:14I even used them last year
36:15for my son's first birthday
36:16in January
36:17because I did a woodland theme,
36:18and they look so fun
36:19with the little animals
36:20around them.
36:20It was really great.
36:22Thank you so much, Kate.
36:23You do such a great job
36:24at this.
36:24It's such a beautiful set.
36:26The whole team
36:27does such a great job here.
36:29And to our friends
36:30at Balsam Hill,
36:31thank you for helping us
36:32deliver holiday magic
36:33again this year.
36:34Balsam Hill has
36:35the most realistic,
36:36true-to-nature,
36:36reusable Christmas trees
36:38and decor.
36:39You can order everything
36:39you need this holiday season
36:41and for years to come online.
36:43You can also see
36:44their products in person
36:45right now at Rockefeller Center's
36:46Apres Skate Chalets,
36:48each decorated
36:48with its own festive theme.
36:50It's magical.
36:51It's overlooking
36:51the iconic Christmas tree
36:52and ice skating rink.
36:54We'll be right back
36:54with What I'm Liking.
37:09All right, everybody.
37:10We are almost out of time,
37:11but before we go,
37:12let's share one more
37:13very important story.
37:14This is What I'm Liking.
37:19November is Native American
37:20Heritage Month,
37:21which celebrates the history,
37:22culture, and contributions
37:23of Indigenous Americans.
37:25It also shines a light
37:26on the struggles
37:27within Indigenous communities.
37:29According to the
37:29National Institute of Justice,
37:31four in five Native women
37:33will experience violence
37:34in their lifetime.
37:35It's a devastating statistic
37:36that's explored
37:37in the new documentary
37:38She Cried That Day.
37:40The crisis of missing
37:41and murdered Indigenous women
37:43is not going to be
37:44an easy issue to fix,
37:47but we need to start somewhere.
37:48We have the filmmaker
38:01dialed in from Atlanta
38:02where she watches on WSB TV.
38:04Everybody say hello
38:05to Amanda Erickson.
38:07Hi, Amanda.
38:09Well, this is a really
38:11underreported story, right?
38:13Absolutely.
38:14This is a crisis
38:16that's been allowed
38:17to hide in plain sight
38:19because of a lack
38:20of communication
38:21and a lack of resources.
38:23Native families have had
38:24to take matters
38:26into their own hands
38:28in order to get answers
38:29and get justice.
38:31Oh, my goodness.
38:32Will you say this film
38:33is deeply personal for you?
38:34Tell everybody how.
38:35Well, for me,
38:37I'm San Carlos Apache
38:38from the Whitewater clan
38:40out in Arizona,
38:41but I grew up
38:42outside of community
38:43on the East Coast.
38:45So it was really
38:45my reconnection
38:47with my culture
38:47and I was blown away
38:49by the strength
38:51and the power
38:52of these young women.
38:54And we were lucky enough
38:55to have a family,
38:56Dionne Thomas' family,
38:58open their arms
38:59and their lives to us
39:01and really show us
39:02what Native families
39:04are having to go through
39:05in order to get justice.
39:07And when you watch this film,
39:09I feel like their openness,
39:11their vulnerability
39:12allows you to get
39:14an intimate look
39:15at what families
39:17that are dealing
39:18with this crisis
39:19are going through.
39:20And it also shows you
39:22the undeniable power
39:24and beauty of the Native women
39:27on the front lines
39:28of this issue.
39:29It's incredible
39:30that you're spotlighting this
39:32since so many people aren't.
39:33And, you know,
39:34you're talking about one family
39:35which I assume can only be
39:37from four out of five women
39:38being affected.
39:39So many families
39:40that are going to be impacted
39:41by you taking the time
39:42to shine a light on this.
39:44Thank you so much, Amanda,
39:45for sharing and making this.
39:46I'm liking your place right now.
39:49That's not all, though.
39:50Our season one partner,
39:51Pilot Pen,

39:55the work you're doing.
39:56So they're writing
