00:00From 30 Rock of Thunder Plaza in New York, it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:12Tonight, Van Cazaria.
00:14Star of Sentimental Value, actress Renata Reisbaugh.
00:18From PayPal, Stephen Hunter, singers EJ, Audrey Nunez, and Ray Ami.
00:25And now, Seth Meyers.
00:27Good evening, everybody. I'm Seth Meyers.
00:30It's Late Night. We hope you're doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we are going to get to the news.
00:35Brazil's Supreme Court yesterday ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro
00:39to begin serving his 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup
00:43after losing an election.
00:45Wow. Our guy only got four years.
00:49Bloomberg News published a transcript yesterday of a leaked phone call
00:53between Special Envoy Steve Witkoff
00:55and one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's top aides,
00:58in which Witkoff appears to offer advice
01:00on how to flatter President Trump.
01:02Though, if they want to know how to talk to Trump,
01:05they should ask Zoran.
01:08I mean, for real.
01:10Look at that.
01:12Normally, the only time you see an old guy smile like that
01:16is when his favorite restaurant opens at four.
01:20While speaking yesterday at the annual White House turkey pardoning,
01:23President Trump said that he had never seen a turkey that big before.
01:26Said an aide,
01:27Sir, that's Mitch McConnell.
01:32Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is facing criticism
01:35for continuing to serve as a paid spokesman for a sleeping pill
01:38while serving as the U.S. ambassador to Israel,
01:41but it won't matter as long as his number one customer is happy.
01:44The New York Times published an article yesterday
01:48on how President Trump is aging in office,
01:51and it's a pretty quick read.
01:56President Trump criticized The New York Times
01:58in a post on Truth Social today for publishing an article
02:01that argues he has slowed down due to aging
02:04and called the newspaper a, quote,
02:05Cheap Rag.
02:07And nothing says I'm not old like calling a newspaper
02:10a cheap rag.
02:12That's definitely how young people talk.
02:15Those muckrakers?
02:18A group of progressive senators nicknamed the Fight Club
02:20are reportedly challenging Senate Minority Leader
02:22Chuck Schumer's strategy for midterm elections.
02:25Well, leave it to the Democrats to immediately break
02:27the first rule of Fight Club.
02:31Well, you guys, tomorrow is Thanksgiving,
02:33so you've got less than 24 hours to do something
02:36with that theater degree.
02:42Pope Leo is set to travel to Turkey on Thanksgiving.
02:45And you know what?
02:46I think we're just going to let your dad have that joke.
02:50The sandwich chain Subway has begun offering a sub
02:53inspired by the turducken called the Turhamkin,
02:56which is served with turkey, ham, chicken, stuffing,
02:59a stool, and a rope.
03:03Authorities in Tempeh recently arrested nearly 250 people
03:12at a bar near Arizona State University
03:16for underage drinking.
03:17To be fair, that is the school's full name.
03:23And finally, KSC recently released its Extra Crispy
03:26Festive Feast, which includes a new gravy flight
03:29featuring three different flavors.
03:31Gravy Flight is also what they call
03:33the helicopter ride to the hospital afterwards.
03:37And that was a monologue, everybody!
03:40It's got a great show tonight.
03:42You know, from Birdcage, as well,
03:44it's fantastic shows like The Simpsons and Brockmire.
03:47Currently, he's starring in The Artist.
03:49The first three episodes will be available
03:51to watch November 27th on the Network.Astream.
03:54Hank Azaria is back on the show, everybody.
03:58She's a fantastic actress.
04:00She's seen in the worst person in the world,
04:02Presumed Innocent, in Oslo, August 31st.
04:05She stars in the amazing new film, Sentimental Value,
04:08which is in theaters now.
04:10Renata Reinceva is back on the show.
04:11We're so happy to have her.
04:14And this is incredibly cool.
04:16We are very excited.
04:17You know them as the singing voices
04:19of the fictional pop group Huntrix
04:21from the massive animated Netflix movie
04:23K-pop Demon Hunters.
04:25See them perform at the 99th edition
04:28of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade,
04:29which airs tomorrow at 8.30 a.m.
04:31on NBC and Peacock across all time zones.
04:34EJ, Audrey Nuna, and Ray Amir are here, you guys.
04:37Hello, guys.
04:39Before we get to everything
04:41we've just promised you,
04:43you guys, um, it's almost Thanksgiving.
04:47Everybody's gathering for the feast,
04:49and that includes my writers.
04:50You know, they write hundreds of jokes every day
04:51just to get the 10 or 12 we use in the monologue,
04:54and honestly, a lot of those jokes just aren't good.
04:59Sometimes I think they throw in a few stinkers on purpose
05:01just to fill the page, meet the assignment,
05:03but just because the pumpkin pie is cooling on the sill,
05:07that doesn't mean we can tolerate laziness,
05:09which means it's time for another surprise inspection.
05:13Here's how this works.
05:20I'm going to read some real jokes
05:22that were really submitted by my real writers
05:25that we pay real money.
05:29Some are dumb, some are offensive,
05:31some are just insane.
05:32Most importantly, my writers don't know we're doing this,
05:35and because they don't watch the show,
05:37they'll never know.
05:39So let's get started.
05:41Honda has issued a recall for more than 400,000 sedans
05:45due to an issue with wheel nuts,
05:47so you'd have to be wheel nuts to keep driving yours.
05:54That's Matt wrote that joke.
05:57We will be showing the pictures of the writers
06:00to shame them, and also, you know, as a cautionary device.
06:05So if you ever see someone who looks like this coming,
06:07you know, cross the street.
06:12Authorities in New Mexico...
06:13By the way, we also start with the ones
06:15we think will go the best.
06:18Authorities in New Mexico recently caught a pig
06:21after it was found running on a highway.
06:23They gave him a porking ticket.
06:27That's Brian.
06:28Brian sits next to Matt,
06:32and I imagine the conversation went like this.
06:34Just came up with porking ticket,
06:38and he was like,
06:40sorry, buddy, I got wheel nuts.
06:44The talent agency UTA recently signed
06:46the makers of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
06:49as part of their plan to make America great again.
06:52Oh, no, we broke you with the first two.
07:04That was Matt again.
07:06Now, Matt and Brian, you know, they have a lot of fun.
07:10A couple of cool dads.
07:13There's a third character in the old writer's room,
07:15and his name is Mike Scollins,
07:16and, uh...
07:18childless man.
07:22Dark-hearted, black-souled.
07:26Not worrying about letting anyone down.
07:29And his joke is next.
07:32An Oregon woman recently rescued a shark
07:34that was stranded on a beach by grabbing its tail
07:37and dragging it into the ocean.
07:40She'll be missed.
07:48A couple of things to know about Scollins,
07:50a couple of fun facts.
07:50He's from Massachusetts, and he wears a tank top to work.
07:57Betty Crocker has launched its new Super Moist collection,
08:01which features sweatshirts, hats, and totes.
08:03But, guys, if she sees you wearing it, she won't be.
08:06Bad news, Brian took a run at this story, too.
08:16Betty Crocker has launched a new collection of apparel and accessories
08:20branded with their trademark Super Moist.
08:22In response, Duncan Hines announced their new Swamp Ass collection.
08:26Taco Bell is set this week to launch its new fan-style menu.
08:35It's called that because you'll need a fan
08:37to get rid of the smells you make after eating it.
08:42Matt wrote that, uh...
08:45The smell...
08:47I take such offense with the smells you make.
08:52It's not the meal you eat.
08:53It's the smells you make along the way.
08:59Oh, boy.
09:01When you see a story like this in the news,
09:03you get so worried that Scollins will see it.
09:06Because you know it's not going to be good for anyone.
09:11According to a new DNA analysis,
09:14Adolf Hitler might have had a micropenis.
09:17Really?
09:18It looked normal to me.
09:19Oh, no!
09:31So the premise of his joke, just to make it clear,
09:34is I, in reading the setup of that joke,
09:38would then admit to the audience
09:39that I'd seen it and it looked normal to me.
09:44And that I would realize my error.
09:47And he thought I'd see that and go,
09:49yeah, no, we should do that one.
09:53Scollins knew I wouldn't do that one,
09:54so he tried a second effort that I also wouldn't do.
09:59According to new DNA analysis,
10:01Adolf Hitler might have had a micropenis,
10:03and not, as he claimed, nine inches.
10:12Just want to hold a little bit longer
10:13so everybody can get a screen grab of this.
10:21I think they know what Hitler looks like.
10:24We don't have to put him in the key.
10:26All right, you know what?
10:30Let's clear the palette with a more fun story,
10:32a lighter one.
10:33Today was National Huggy Musician Day,
10:35which is a lot better than what you used to have to do.
10:47You're doing worse than Hitler!
10:49That was a...
10:54Hey, you guys know who wrote that joke?
10:56I don't have to tell you.
11:02Three choices.
11:03I'm going to read the joke.
11:04I want you all to mentally guess who wrote it.
11:07And finally, today was National Payback Your Parents Day.
11:10Way ahead of you said Eric and Lyle.
11:12This has been Surprise Inspection.
11:30We'll be right back with Hank Azaria, everybody.
11:32We'll be right back with Hank Azaria, everybody.
11:55Our first guest tonight is an Emmy-winning actor.
11:58You know from the Birdcage,
11:59as well as shows like The Simpsons and Brockmire.
12:01He stars in The Artist,
12:03which premieres with the first three episodes
12:05on the network.stream on November 27th.
12:08Let's take a look.
12:09He doesn't have it.
12:10He doesn't have it within him to set you free.
12:12A woman was never to be published.
12:14I did you a favor.
12:16You are never going to go to Paris.
12:17Quite a brazen one at that.
12:19You are never going to Paris.
12:21Do you hear me?
12:22You bet on the wrong pony and you lost.
12:27We all did.
12:28The rest of it, that just doesn't matter,
12:30because you lost, I lost.
12:32Shut up.
12:34We all lost.
12:35Shut up, Marion.
12:36I'm getting the sense this isn't entirely about me.
12:38Marion!
12:39God damn it!
12:40God!
12:42Please welcome back to the show,
12:43our friend Hank Azaria, everybody.
12:45Welcome back!
13:03I mean, punched by Mandy Patinkin,
13:05you can't ask for more than that.
13:07It's on the resume now.
13:08It's on the resume.
13:10Special skills.
13:10This is, I say this with adoration,
13:14this show is nuts in a really fun way.
13:16I have described it as Downton Abbey on acid.
13:19Yeah.
13:19And that is exactly what it is.
13:21It's a murder mystery that takes place in the Gilded Age.
13:24You play Thomas Edison.
13:25Was that on your bingo card for a part that would come your way?
13:28No, really, you know, I can really check that one off.
13:32Thomas Edison.
13:33No, and I was like, what is this thing?
13:35Yeah.
13:36And they sent it over.
13:37And I read the script, and I'm like, this is really good.
13:39I mean, for a historical, I guess, black comedy, dramedy,
13:44whatever it is, set in the Gilded Age,
13:47the use of the C word came up more than I expected.
13:50Yeah.
13:50More than I expected.
13:51It's immediately filthy.
13:53And you realize people didn't start using those words
13:55in, like, 1980.
13:56Those words been around.
13:57I guess.
13:58Yeah.
13:58At least in this world, that's what happened.
14:01They're using it a lot.
14:02As Thomas Edison, I didn't have to say it.
14:04But I had to react to it quite a lot.
14:06You had to react to it.
14:06Yeah.
14:07It is on the network.
14:10Yes.
14:10If you go on Apple, okay, on your Apple thingy,
14:14and you search the network.stream.
14:17I got to do this, because they need it to be said.
14:19Yeah.
14:20Search the network.stream.
14:22Then you get a free app, and then you'll find this show.
14:25Got it.
14:25I'm glad you're spelling it out, because I've said it twice already,
14:28and both times, I'm worried I'm saying it wrong.
14:31Yeah.
14:32They assure me it's real, and it actually wasn't.
14:34It's a real show.
14:35It felt like, you know, I know George Clooney.
14:37It felt like a joke he might be playing on me.
14:40I showed up at a set, and ha, ha, ha, it's not real.
14:43It's really funny to have enough money to prank somebody
14:45by making them shoot a whole season of television.
14:48George would do it.
14:48Yeah, and they, like, get you to do a full press tour,
14:51and then they're like, that's not a show.
14:53There was no film in the camera.
14:54You have a cover band.
14:57I do have a cover band.
14:58Easy Street Band.
14:59Yeah, Springsteen.
15:01Springsteen.
15:02Yeah.
15:02And what's very novel about this, compared to cover bands I've heard,
15:07any cover band really, is you both are doing Springsteen songs,
15:10but you're also taking advantage of, like, that wonderful thing
15:13that Bruce does, which is he tells a lot of really great stories
15:16in between the songs.
15:17Yeah, a lot of spoken word from Bruce.
15:19Yeah.
15:20I grew up, you know, loving these bootlegs.
15:22Yeah.
15:23And now, on Spotify, you can get every live recording
15:25of Bruce ever made, but back in the day,
15:27we had to go to the record store.
15:29Yeah.
15:29There was a thing called a record store.
15:31Yeah.
15:32You bought vinyl records, and he would give these,
15:35you know, monologues, we called them talks, in concert,
15:38which I found extremely inspiring.
15:40Yeah.
15:42Equal to the songs.
15:43Yeah.
15:44About following your dreams of being who you are,
15:45about getting out of the circumstance you find yourself in.
15:49They also would often end with a song that you had not,
15:52you weren't guessing where it was going.
15:54And then, right at the end, he would tie it into that song,
15:56and that was incredibly special, because then you would always
15:58remember the story with the song when you heard it over the years.
16:00Absolutely. I mean, he was really, I mean,
16:03he's a brilliant storyteller and writer, obviously.
16:06And sometimes you didn't know where he was going,
16:08or like in the middle of a song called Grown Up,
16:10which is off his first album, he would tell the story
16:13about getting in a motorcycle accident as a teenager.
16:15And he would connect his life with the songs in a way
16:20that was very affecting to me and really inspired me
16:23to try to become a creative person as a teenager.
16:24So, you're obviously covering the songs.
16:26People have that expectation when they go to see.
16:28We try to recreate Bruce's sound as exactly as possible.
16:31And then, do you also then cover the stories?
16:34It's a weird thing. It's almost performance art set.
16:37Like, I tell the story the night that I first met my wife,
16:41and it was love at first sight for me, for Hank Azarian.
16:45But I tell it as Bruce.
16:47I tell the night that my...
16:50This is very much performance art.
16:51It's very strange. Yeah.
16:53Well, it started, I turned 60 a couple of years ago.
16:56I felt a certain way about that, as the kids like to say.
17:00To cheer myself up, I'm like, I'm going to invite all my friends
17:02to a birthday party and do like a reverse surprise.
17:06I told them I had a Springsteen tribute band coming.
17:09I didn't say that I had been working for months to front it.
17:12And then, I made them all watch it,
17:13like I did a 90-minute performance.
17:15I'm like, one, two, three, four, and I was in, right?
17:19So, this is a cry for help.
17:21Essentially. Yeah, I got it, got it.
17:22I don't even call it...
17:24I call it a post-midlife crisis.
17:26It's great. Because I'm way too old.
17:27I will say, I want to...
17:28From a distance, this could really be Bruce.
17:31It could be Bruce. Yeah, it's really well done.
17:33I mean, I think... No worries.
17:35It's a good band.
17:36Did you, uh, have you met the man?
17:41I met him years ago, twice,
17:44and fanboyed so hard the first time.
17:47I was doing a musical called Spamalot.
17:50Yes, fantastic.
17:51And thank you. Thank you.
17:53Monty Python, another hero of mine.
17:56Well, he's not a real person, but you know what I mean.
17:58Yeah, Eric. Certainly Eric.
17:59So, I finished the show one night backstage,
18:02knock on the door in my dressing room, I open it,
18:04and Bruce Springsteen's saying they're alone.
18:06And I handled it really well, like this.
18:08Like that.
18:11And he was really sweet.
18:12He gave me his review of the show,
18:13and we chatted long enough for me to get up the nerve
18:16to tell Bruce what he meant to me.
18:18Yeah.
18:19I tell this story in concert sometimes,
18:22and I said, Bruce, I got to tell you,
18:24you know, your music meant so much.
18:26I had some very hard times as a teenager.
18:28Your music got me through it, but not just your music.
18:31Those monologues, they inspired me to be a creative person
18:33when really no one else would or could.
18:35I wouldn't be standing backstage at the Schubert Theater
18:38talking to you if not for you.
18:41That is what I said, but that is not how I said it.
18:45This, I swear, this is how it came out.
18:47Bruce, I love you, I love you, I love you.
18:50You've been so much.
18:51I want to be out of here.
18:53I sounded like a goose on acid.
18:56A lot of acid themes in my life, and I don't think
18:59he could even understand what I was saying.
19:02And he just kind of looked at me and gave me kind of
19:04a fatherly pat on the shoulder.
19:05Right, right.
19:06And then found a reason, you know, to go away
19:09within 30 seconds, and I don't blame him.
19:10Years later, I went to see his Broadway show.
19:12Which is incredible.
19:13Yes, and at intermission, a guy came up and said,
19:17would you like to come back and say hi to Bruce afterwards?
19:19Like, oh, of course.
19:20I said to my wife, I'm not going to blow it this time.
19:23I'm going to be calm.
19:25We go backstage, I'm doing deep breathing exercises,
19:28and he's making his way down a receiving line
19:30with his wife, Patty.
19:32And I swear, before he gets to us,
19:33before he can even say hello, I go,
19:36Bruce, you have my growing up!
19:38I'm growing up!
19:39No, seriously, my senior high school yearbook page
19:42is all the lyrics to growing up!
19:44And he looked at me, same look on his face,
19:47as if to say, aren't you the nut that effed this up
19:51the last time?
19:53Same, like, nice pat on my shoulder.
19:56And he was gone.
19:56But, yeah, so I blew it twice.
19:58That's all right.
19:59I feel confident you're going to have a third shot at this,
20:01or you're going to nail it.
20:01I hope so.
20:03Hey, thanks so much for being here.
20:04I'm so excited for the show.
20:06It was great to have you guys.
20:07Hank Azaria, the artist, premiered November 27th
20:10on the network.
20:11Don Scream will be right back,
20:12because we're not around today.
20:14We'll be right back, and we'll be right back.
20:17We'll be right back, and we'll be right back.
20:19Our next guest is a talented actress you know from her work
20:36in The Worst Person in the World, A Different Man,
20:38Presumed Innocent, and Oslo, August 31st.
20:41She stars in Sentimental Value, which is in theaters now.
20:44Let's take a look.
21:11Yeah.
21:13Please welcome back to the show our friend
21:15Renata Reintseva, everybody.
21:32Hello!
21:33How are you?
21:34I'm good.
21:35I'm very happy to have you here.
21:36I want to talk about this fantastic film,
21:38but I want to ask, you're from Norway.
21:40Have you ever been in New York City
21:42or even in America for Thanksgiving?
21:44Never.
21:45So you're going to do it?
21:46I'm going to do it the first time tomorrow.
21:48And what are your plans?
21:50Yeah.
21:51I'm very happy to get your involvement.
21:53I don't know how you guys do it,
21:54so I'm just going to imitate.
21:55I'm doing it with some other people from Europe.
21:58You don't want anyone local to help out?
22:01Well, yes, please.
22:04What do you do?
22:04I like that you're...
22:05Well, mostly if you just eat enough
22:07that you have to unbutton your pants, it's going great.
22:09So wear pants.
22:11But anything else?
22:12Do you do anything else?
22:13No.
22:13I mean, you try to think about the actual root of the holiday
22:15as little as possible.
22:17Yeah.
22:17Try not to actually dig into the history of it.
22:20I think just try to, like, what are you thankful?
22:21Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:23You know what I mean?
22:23Just like, let's be thankful about today.
22:25Yeah.
22:26But so they told me, don't bring anything.
22:28Just bring yourself.
22:29But I want to bring something.
22:30I mean, a bottle of red wine.
22:31I think a bottle of red wine would be fine.
22:33Okay.
22:33Don't try to cook anything.
22:35Okay.
22:36I mean, I'm not saying you're...
22:37I'm just saying, like, don't for the first time be like...
22:39Did you hear about that?
22:40Did you know my skills in cooking?
22:42Did I maybe hit a nerve?
22:44No, no.
22:45Are you a good cook?
22:46I'm okay.
22:47Great.
22:48I can't, like, put things together and improvise.
22:50Then it tastes really horrible.
22:52But I can, like, if I plan, if I...
22:54Gotcha.
22:54I have to, like, rehearse.
22:56Yeah.
22:57I mean, you have just defined okay.
22:59Yeah.
23:00I'm very mediocre.
23:02Very mediocre across the board, but I can follow an instruction.
23:06Yeah.
23:07Does Norway have any big eating holidays?
23:09Well, we only have, like, Christmas.
23:11Like, every time I send an e-mail to someone here, it's like,
23:15it's the holidays.
23:17We can't answer you.
23:18We'll get back to you after the holidays.
23:20And you just have the one in Norway?
23:21Well, I talked to someone today, and we also have 17th of May.
23:26That's, like, your 4th of July.
23:28Okay, gotcha.
23:29So we have that, but it's Christmas.
23:31Got it, so that's what we have.
23:33You have very long winters.
23:34Very long.
23:35Very dark.
23:36Very dark.
23:37And, but how do you keep your spirits up?
23:40Well, we do...
23:42It's a lot of lights everywhere, because it's very, very dark.
23:45We have, like, a few hours of daylight.
23:47And we go into the sea, and we swim, like, take away the ice,
23:51and go in, and go into the sauna.
23:53Okay, so what is...
23:54You don't have to break ice and go in the water,
23:57so why do you?
23:58Because we get depressed.
24:03Okay, but now, but can you see from where I'm sitting,
24:06that's even more depressing?
24:07Like...
24:09I can see it, but it works.
24:12Okay, so what is it?
24:14Is it just, like, light up endorphins or something?
24:16Yeah, yeah, it's all the good hormones comes up in the...
24:19Okay, gotcha.
24:20Do you think you've maybe been tricked in, like...
24:22Well, no, I'm just, like, that you're living a life in darkness,
24:24and so a bad thing seems like a good thing, because...
24:28Maybe.
24:29Oh, no, no, no.
24:30Come back to us.
24:32But, and so the sauna, I would imagine,
24:34is that you spend a little bit more time there.
24:37Like, quick in the water and then long sauna?
24:39Some people do, like, hardcore stay in the water for a long time.
24:41I don't. I don't even use my hands in there.
24:44Like, I hold the hands up like this.
24:46I'm not... I'm mediocre there, too.
24:48Okay, great.
24:50You are not mediocre in this film.
24:51I love this film so much. It's just absolutely beautiful.
24:56And it's... You know, it's a movie about a family,
24:59and it actually is well-timed for this part of the year,
25:02because it's a family with a complicated history.
25:04Yeah.
25:05Joachim Trier, who I know you've worked with before,
25:07he was here, the director and the writer,
25:09and he said he always had you in mind for the role.
25:11Does that put an extra burden on you when you hear
25:13that someone has sort of written it specifically for you?
25:16Yeah, it is scary, but it's also a great gift for an actor,
25:19because you get so much trust that he believes you can do something.
25:24He wanted to challenge me more afterwards,
25:26person in the world, with more emotional weight
25:29to have a more mature role.
25:32But when I opened the script, I was really scared
25:34because he's very smart, very wise.
25:36So he sees things that I don't see about myself sometimes.
25:39Yeah.
25:40And what he writes is so complex.
25:42And, yeah, it was both at the same time
25:46really scary and so fantastic.
25:49There's, you know, it is about a family
25:51sort of coming to terms with one another,
25:52a family with, like, a difficult history,
25:54but, like, also a great amount of love for one another.
25:56Yeah.
25:57Your family, did they see it?
25:59And what was their reaction?
26:02No, so my family has, like, all worked in,
26:07like, a hardware store when I was young.
26:09They fired me from that hardware store.
26:12They fired you from the hardware store?
26:14Well, I was, yeah.
26:15You weren't as good of a hardware person as a chef.
26:18No.
26:20So they kind of didn't always take it maybe so seriously
26:24that I wanted to be an actor, but I brought them
26:27to Cannes Film Festival, where the movie premiered.
26:29Right.
26:30And I just remember standing outside with my whole family.
26:33Like, it was so quiet.
26:34We weren't talking.
26:36After?
26:36After the screening.
26:38And then the time after, like, up until now,
26:41it's kind of changed a little bit.
26:43It's like a warmer atmosphere.
26:45Oh, it's helped the family.
26:46It's been therapeutic.
26:47Yeah, a little bit.
26:48I think it's a good movie that way.
26:50But I do want to say, like, here's your family.
26:51They were happy.
26:53They were happy.
26:54Oh, they were going to be so happy to be on TV.
26:58What?
26:59Was there a moment?
27:03Be honest.
27:03Was there a moment that you did something where they were like,
27:05we can't keep her on at the hardware store?
27:08Yeah.
27:08Well, I would never show up on time,
27:11and I wasn't really interested.
27:13Yeah.
27:14You want, I will say, like, when I go to a hardware store,
27:16I certainly don't want someone working there to be like,
27:18I don't really care one way or the other.
27:20Right, yeah.
27:21I want experts who are, like, drilled down.
27:23Yeah.
27:24I would be like, go over there.
27:25I don't know.
27:27Have you been kicked out of anything else?
27:29Yes.
27:30What else?
27:31Like, a lot of places.
27:33But the first thing was Girl Scouts.
27:36Oh, really?
27:36Yeah, I was really small.
27:38Okay.
27:39Like, I think, like, seven, eight, and they were like...
27:42You didn't get kicked out for being too small, did you?
27:44No.
27:45Seems like a bad Girl Scout unit.
27:46Yeah, yeah.
27:47No, I remember being sat down and like,
27:50we don't feel you belong here.
27:52But it was because you have to learn things a certain way
27:55to survive in nature.
27:57And I love nature.
27:57I'm a nature person.
27:58But I was, like, building these bird things, the houses,
28:02with, like, too many windows and many doors.
28:04Yeah.
28:05But why, why can't I have all these doors?
28:08Right.
28:09And they suggested I start theater.
28:11Oh, that's right. Well, there you go.
28:12Yeah.
28:13So, they're...
28:14That's really...
28:15I will say, that is a good Girl Scout troop leader.
28:18If you see too many doors on a birdhouse, you're like...
28:21I think we might have an actor.
28:25Yoakim has made so many films in Oslo.
28:28I would imagine people who live in Oslo both, like, love it
28:30and also probably are critical of things they think he gets wrong.
28:34Yeah.
28:35But how are you...
28:36Are you just, like, so recognizable in Oslo now
28:38for making these films?
28:39Well, yeah, more and more.
28:41But people in Oslo are very polite.
28:43They leave you alone.
28:44They're kind of like...
28:45And we kind of...
28:46Everyone's on the same level.
28:48So, yes, yes, you did something great,
28:51but let's keep you down.
28:52Yeah.
28:53Yeah, yeah.
28:54Okay, there's not a celebrity culture.
28:56Yes.
28:56No, it isn't.
28:57So, it's, like, easy to take the bus everywhere
28:59and, like, walk around and...
29:01But is it...
29:02I think I read that you were at a screening
29:05and you heard somebody behind you start talking
29:08or maybe in front of you.
29:09And you...
29:10Yeah, I came off the bus.
29:10Sorry, now I interrupted you.
29:12But, yeah, I came off the bus and then I heard someone said,
29:15I was just on the bus with Renate Reimslein.
29:17And I turned around immediately
29:20because I was so scared they would say something bad.
29:21Yeah.
29:23So, you were like, I'm here, FYI?
29:24Yeah.
29:25I'm right here.
29:28That's really great.
29:29I think the important thing is they...
29:31I mean, what an amazing day to, like...
29:33The next place they went, they were at a restaurant,
29:35they were like, first, I was on the bus with her.
29:38Then she was right in front of us at the movie theater.
29:40And then you're one table over at the restaurant.
29:42You're like, I'm here.
29:43You're still here, yeah.
29:45I love this movie so much.
29:46I love seeing you again.
29:48Thanks so much for being here.
29:49Thank you so much.
29:50Congratulations on the film.
29:51Renate Reimslein, everybody.
29:52Sentimental Value is in theaters now.
29:54Stick around. Be right back with EJ,
29:55Audrey Nuna, and Ray Ami.
30:13They are Grammy-nominated artists you know as the singing voices
30:22of the fictional pop group Huntrix
30:24from the wildly popular animated Netflix movie
30:26K-pop Demon Hunters.
30:28They'll be performing in the 99th edition
30:30of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade,
30:32which airs tomorrow at 8.30 a.m.
30:34on NBC and Peacock across all time zones.
30:36Please welcome to the show EJ, Audrey Nuna,
30:39and Ray Ami, everybody.
31:00Please sit.
31:02Welcome, you guys.
31:03What a time to have you.
31:05We feel so lucky.
31:06All right.
31:07We feel lucky.
31:07Thank you for having me.
31:08Congratulations.
31:09Of course, Audrey, you've been here before.
31:122021, you were here with Samba,
31:14and it is so lovely to see you again.
31:15Also, we were talking backstage.
31:17I think there was no audience when you were here.
31:18Yes, it was a quiet audience.
31:21After we were done, we were like...
31:24Yeah.
31:25It was a very strange time to have guests
31:27on the show doing music, because it would just finish,
31:29and we'd be like, well, very well done.
31:32Thank you so much for being here.
31:33First TV performance, so thank you for that.
31:35You guys, I don't know...
31:38I don't know if you guys were out and about on Halloween,
31:40but surely it has been explained to you
31:42that you have taken over all the Halloween costumes.
31:45K-pop Demon Hunter was the scene.
31:47Mm-hmm.
31:48Was it exciting to know that you are now
31:50the cultural touchstone for what kids wanted to dress up like?
31:53Oh, my God. As a Korean?
31:55Yeah.
31:56I think absolutely.
31:57Are you kidding?
31:58Absolutely.
31:59Because I wanted to be Britney, so, like...
32:01This is so insane, you know?
32:03It's come full circle.
32:05My son was Janu.
32:06There he is, yeah.
32:07Yeah.
32:08Oh, no!
32:10What's so awesome?
32:12He didn't love the wig.
32:13We got him...
32:13I think we maybe got one of the cheaper costumes.
32:17And he had an issue right away.
32:18Also, Grammy-nominated.
32:20Five Grammys.
32:27And, uh, obviously, it's an emotional day, right?
32:29Um, I would be exactly the same way you reacted, right?
32:33Yes.
32:34And, by the way, you weren't sharing it to the world.
32:37That was your reaction.
32:39And I think it's really sweet.
32:40Now, my question is, EJ, why did you write underneath it,
32:43ha, ha, ha, ha, ha?
32:45It's so funny.
32:47Did you, like...
32:49When you saw your friend sobbing,
32:50did you immediately think you were going to write ha, ha, ha, ha?
32:53She's just so cute.
32:54She's just so cute.
32:56Look at the profile picture.
32:58The profile picture is also her crying.
33:00Wait, that's her crying?
33:01I didn't even notice.
33:02No, no, no, no.
33:03That's when we were platinum.
33:05Oh, my God, you guys.
33:07Very nice to know in real life, of course, you're supportive.
33:10Exactly.
33:12Um, you guys, you had worked on these songs,
33:14uh, basically for about five years.
33:16Is that about right?
33:17Yes, yes.
33:18And is it true that you were composing
33:19some of Golden in the car on the way to the dentist?
33:23Yes, that's, um, yes.
33:24You know, when I listened to it,
33:25I thought that might be the case.
33:27Yeah.
33:28You know what? It's not marketing.
33:29It's real. It's really real.
33:30So what happened?
33:31Like, does it just occur to you on a drive like that?
33:33You know what's crazy, too?
33:34It's, like, on the way to get Gold Fillings.
33:36Okay. Right over here.
33:37Okay, great.
33:39Um, but, yeah, it was just crazy
33:41because, um, it just happened so naturally.
33:43Like, um, what do you call it?
33:45So we had, like, a deadline.
33:47It was the last song.
33:48We needed to finish it.
33:49So they sent us, uh, me and Mark the track,
33:52and it was on the way to the dentist.
33:53And I think it's just, like, the melody just came out really fast,
33:56and I just got really lucky.
33:58That's amazing.
33:59And then is it because you...
34:01As it comes to you, you know it's good.
34:03Is that, do you think, why you can pinpoint
34:04exactly where it happened?
34:05You're like, oh, man, drive to the dentist.
34:07That's where it all went down.
34:08Well, I have a voice memo,
34:10and you hear the taxi driver going like...
34:12Like...
34:14Sorry.
34:15He wants some of the publishing.
34:16He's like, I'm on that track.
34:17Maybe, yeah.
34:19I could be honest, when you first heard the title
34:22of the project, K-pop Demon Hunters,
34:25like, what was your first reaction?
34:27Confusion.
34:27Mine was, like...
34:29Because I was on the project for a minute.
34:30It was, like, called K-pop Movie,
34:33and then the other one was K-pop Demon Hunters.
34:35I was like, it's temporary, right?
34:37Like, I was just like, it's temporary.
34:38And she's like, yeah, yeah, don't worry, it's temporary.
34:40And then we saw the premiere end.
34:41I was just like, what is this film about?
34:45Yeah.
34:46I'm like, is this some sort of metaphor for life
34:48or something?
34:50Because it can't be about what it actually says, right?
34:54But it's genius.
34:55It is.
34:56It catches your dreams, like, what is it?
34:58And then you watch it.
34:59Well, I think it's genius.
35:00Like, the thing is, like, first of all,
35:02it's a movie, Adults Love, but the title grabs kids.
35:05So as an adult, you hear the title,
35:07and you're like, oh, my God, this is going to be, you know,
35:09it feels like we're sharing the reaction.
35:10I'm like, this sounds so dumb.
35:12And then, like, somebody, like, won this, like,
35:14wave of parents started, words started getting back,
35:17which is like, you know what's really good?
35:18K-pop Demon Hunters.
35:19And you're like, real? For real?
35:20And they're like, yeah.
35:21And then, like, everybody watching it,
35:22they're like, oh, my God, it's really good.
35:23And then you realize, you know, for kids,
35:25why are you trying to be tricky?
35:26Just call it what it is.
35:27It doesn't have to be literal.
35:27He's like, get to the point.
35:29Keep it simple.
35:29The thing I always, like,
35:31I have to tell my father-in-law all the time,
35:32I'm like, stop being sarcastic with my kids.
35:34They don't understand sarcasm.
35:36You have to be literal if you want to make a point with them.
35:41How are you guys feeling?
35:43You're going to do one song at the parade.
35:45Indeed.
35:46How many dancers?
35:47I think 100 on the floor,
35:48and then 20 on the platform with us.
35:51Okay.
35:52I think that would be great.
35:53Oh, my God.
35:56Shout out to the dancers.
35:57Shout out to the dancers.
35:59Obviously, you've rehearsed with the dancers.
36:01And they just must be at a level of which
36:03we can't even comprehend.
36:05So good. They are serving.
36:06The energy is just...
36:08It feeds us, too, you know,
36:10because we've done it.
36:12I'm like, we've performed this song twice now.
36:14And this will be our second time.
36:17And I think having this energy around us,
36:21it really... I don't know how you guys feel,
36:23but it's just...
36:24It's so infectious.
36:25You feed off of that, and it's just so powerful.
36:28I like, Audrey, that it's your second time,
36:29and you're like, without the dancers, we'd be over it.
36:33Yeah, it doesn't...
36:34I mean, it's been a whirlwind, for sure.
36:36You've got, of course, a float as well.
36:39Derpy.
36:40Derpy Tiger.
36:43I mean, that's a pretty special thing.
36:45And then, um, you just...
36:47Is this...
36:47This is Halloween.
36:48Yes! That's me.
36:49Yeah.
36:50So here I am talking about Halloween.
36:52Everybody's dressing up like K-pop demon hunters,
36:54and I'm, like, burying the lead.
36:55I think you did a great job.
36:56Yeah.
36:57She was so adorable.
37:00So you were back and forth between Korea and New Jersey.
37:02New Jersey and Maryland, correct?
37:04That's where you guys grew up.
37:05So, but I would imagine the representation for your family,
37:08as well, must be incredible to be in a film like this
37:11that, you know, has this incredible Korean element to it.
37:13Are they just, like, overwhelmed with pride
37:15for how well this has been received?
37:17Are you looking? Are they here?
37:18Do you have parents here?
37:19Yes!
37:20Hello! Welcome!
37:25So happy you're here!
37:28It's so cool!
37:30I love their reaction.
37:33I think they're pretty proud of me.
37:34I feel bad, because even I, knowing how much my kids like this,
37:38I asked you guys to sign stuff, but is your family...
37:41Are you just getting inundated now with autograph requests?
37:43Oh, 100%.
37:44Yeah.
37:46I went to Korea recently, and my mom's like,
37:48let's have dinner to celebrate.
37:50Private dinner, super casual.
37:53Okay.
37:53And so I was like, okay, let's go to the restaurant.
37:55Let's go to the little room.
37:56And she's like, oh, by the way, you know,
37:59my friend's gonna come, and she's gonna bring her niece
38:01and nephews, and I was like, okay, that's fine.
38:03Oh, also, my doctor's gonna come, and she's gonna respond,
38:05and I was like, good job.
38:07And then I was like, uh, okay, Mom, is that it?
38:09She's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I promise.
38:10I go there, and there's 50 people there.
38:13And she's just so proud, I get it.
38:15And then there's, like, lines of, like, autographs to sign.
38:18It was just like...
38:19Oh, my God, it's just a merch table your mom has set up.
38:22Literally.
38:23A cake of roomie on the center.
38:25Oh, my God.
38:26But you got a lot of the best thing in the world.
38:28Yeah, yeah, they're so proud.
38:29Have any of you had to sign something dumb yet?
38:33I, my, my dad had me sign his friend's golf hat.
38:39But I literally signed it.
38:41It's the most Korean thing ever.
38:43The most Korean thing ever, and I signed it.
38:46He's like, no more.
38:47I'm just like, okay, let me get the back angle.
38:50It's like, no more.
38:51And literally, it looks like I vandalized his hat.
38:53It's cool, though.
38:54And he probably is golfing in it right now.
38:56That's fantastic.
38:58Yeah.
38:59Your sister recently married.
39:00My sister got married last month.
39:02And my aunts from Korea visited.
39:04And they had, like, a list of 50-plus people and, like, 20 businesses.
39:07They wanted me to endorse.
39:08And I'm like, I can...
39:10Also married Korean.
39:11Yes.
39:12I cannot endorse a business I've never stepped foot into.
39:15So I politely declined that.
39:17But, yeah, my wrist was working.
39:19Yeah.
39:20It hurts now.
39:23That's how you know you're in a hit.
39:24They say if your wrist hurts, you're in a hit.
39:26Oh, is that what it is?
39:27That's what it is.
39:28Did your sister ask you to sing at her wedding?
39:31No.
39:31Okay, good.
39:32She can't afford it.
39:33She can't afford it.
39:33Right, there you go.
39:34Yeah.
39:38You three are just as a delight to talk to.
