00:00Beautiful, isn't it?
00:01Yeah.
00:02Without help, I don't think we could do it.
00:04I mean, there's literally no part of this house that is livable.
00:08And so, where do you start?
00:12That's the actual roof.
00:14And yes, this is structural.
00:17Let's not get on in.
00:19This is one of the biggest budget wrecks I've ever taken on for a client.
00:23It feels like we're building a skyscraper.
00:25This is wild.
00:272,400 pounds up above the house.
00:28We have no room for error.
00:31Nobody be under our feet.
00:33We're not in the clear yet.
00:35Oh my gosh.
00:38Between social media, how-to videos, and baseless tutorials,
00:43inspired DIYers are taking on bigger and bigger projects,
00:47leaving their homes in complete chaos.
00:50What have you done?
00:51There's a big hole in the wall.
00:53The flood needed.
00:54This was a DIY gone wrong.
00:55What have we started?
00:57This is sketchy.
00:58You step in the wrong spot.
01:00You're going through.
01:02Yeah.
01:04For years, I've helped families in Southern California
01:07restore order to their dream homes.
01:09Oh, oh, oh!
01:10We're done!
01:12Now, I've moved my family to Park City, Utah,
01:14where I'm rebuilding my business,
01:16and I know it's not going to be easy.
01:18New town, new business, new wrecks.
01:21Today, I'm in a part of Salt Lake City called The Avenues.
01:33I've actually never been this far up the hill,
01:35and it looks like, according to my navigation,
01:37I'm only going up.
01:38So, you know, trying to build my business here in Utah,
01:43I put out a call on social media,
01:45and Brynn responded.
01:48I was the one that contacted Jasmine for help.
01:50Without me knowing?
01:51Yes.
01:53Brynn is a flight attendant,
01:54and David is a retired pilot.
01:57Her silly sense of humor is what attracted me initially to her.
02:01And Brynn.
02:02Oh, I was trying to think so.
02:05Oh, thank you.
02:08For me, the number one most important thing in a house is the view.
02:12The location has to be right to have the best view.
02:15So I'm out on the deck.
02:17This is like sitting in the cockpit and looking out.
02:20We found the house four and a half years ago.
02:22I walk in, and I could feel it had our energy.
02:25We liked it.
02:26But it was very 1968.
02:28A lot of little rooms, chopped up spaces.
02:31Not the best house.
02:32But the best view.
02:35I'm going to take this wall down behind me.
02:38Should be opened up to the den.
02:40I plan to change the house by taking out walls.
02:43Opening up the rooms.
02:44That's a good start.
02:46I'll do the rest later.
02:48I see myself as a hobbyist general contractor.
02:51Working alone, I usually think, oh, I can do it.
02:54And it was only, I don't know, a seven-foot-long beam.
02:58And lifting it up, I ruptured a disc in my lower back.
03:02And it's painful.
03:04Just slide it because you're back.
03:05The doctor said, you know, you've got to stop lifting heavy things over your head.
03:09But it's frustrating because every day I want to go do something.
03:13So I'm getting ready to go.
03:14And it's kind of like an obstacle course to get out.
03:17If it was one thing, you could maybe ignore it or put a plant in front of it.
03:20Now it's almost every room.
03:23I see the end result.
03:25I just physically can't do it anymore.
03:28Oh, who is this?
03:29This is Watson.
03:30Hi, I'm David.
03:31Jasmine.
03:31I'm Brynn.
03:32Nice to meet you.
03:33This is Watson.
03:34Oh, my gosh.
03:35He's massive.
03:38He's a big boy.
03:39Oh, wow.
03:40We're really walking right into this.
03:42Right into it.
03:43Fifteen months ago, I started this.
03:45Okay.
03:46And then I hurt my back.
03:47And then it's kind of stalled.
03:49Yeah.
03:49So did you hurt yourself actually working on the house?
03:52Yes.
03:52I took out this bearing wall.
03:54And when I was putting up the headers.
03:57Oof.
03:57And then that's it.
03:59So you just live with back pain.
04:00So when you're doing this work, do you have an engineer that you're working with?
04:04Yes.
04:05I always hire an engineer before I start doing work.
04:08Yeah.
04:09Big load off of here.
04:11Let's get into the house.
04:13What's going on here?
04:14We're changing the entire floor plan.
04:16We didn't like the fact that when you walked in, you can't see out.
04:20The view.
04:21So you come in the front door.
04:22This wall would go away.
04:24Oh.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Nice.
04:25So this goes away.
04:26You walk in and you see the view.
04:28Ah, bazinga.
04:31So taking this wall down is really important.
04:34And then over here would be my office on the other side of the tape.
04:37David has some personality traits of a pilot.
04:41He's a perfectionist and he likes to have hands-on everything.
04:45I've had a lot of time to think about what it will feel like to have somebody else work on my home.
04:51It'll be hard for you.
04:52Well, it is my home.
04:53I think I could be of help by sending an email every now and then.
04:57Whether they listen to it, I don't know, but it'll make me feel better.
05:02Wow.
05:02Now I see the view.
05:04I also see a bear.
05:05Well, that's Brin's.
05:08I have an animal problem.
05:11My style is all over the place.
05:14I would say modern and clean, but I got so much stuff that it's kind of cluttered.
05:19You have a lot of stuff.
05:21A lot of grass.
05:22Yeah.
05:23What is this room?
05:25So it is our living room and our dining room.
05:27So you've got rocks.
05:28Rocks and fossils.
05:30Like a ton of them.
05:30That's a rib bone from the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
05:3370 million years old.
05:35Oh, wow.
05:37What's your dream for the fireplace?
05:39I guess I would just like it to look more appealing, to have a place on either side of it for some of my collectibles.
05:45The problem with this room was there's the crown molding and the ceiling's kind of weird.
05:50I don't know what was going on.
05:51I would square it off more.
05:53I don't like that.
05:54We don't like the pitch.
05:55That's something you have to kind of dig in and understand why they're like this.
06:00Right.
06:00We'll just have to see.
06:02What happened to this wall here?
06:03We always wanted the feel of a great big open room.
06:06So I tore it open to explore.
06:08I can see the back of your TV.
06:10I can see right into the other room.
06:11It's beautiful, isn't it?
06:12Yeah.
06:13I mean, normally if I wasn't in the pain I'm in, I would have taken down the rest of this wall.
06:19It just got too painful, so I stopped.
06:21Which is fair.
06:22Yeah.
06:22But now this is what it is.
06:25What about the windows?
06:26You mentioned you want to open this up a little bit.
06:28I've already bought the new windows.
06:30So my thought is, the bay window, it goes away.
06:33And I think it should be glass from corner to corner, floor to ceiling.
06:39So this whole space is just the view coming into the house.
06:43I don't disagree.
06:44I think it's really ambitious, but that's the dream, right?
06:47To be able to just have that glass wall.
06:50And we put a table in front of that door because we're afraid of somebody walking out of it and it doesn't go anywhere.
06:57That door was like that when you bought the house?
06:59Yeah, I think it's been like that for 60 years.
07:02That should have the deck come over.
07:04The big deck going all the way around the house.
07:06This deck, walk me through this.
07:08We normally don't let more than four or five people out here at a time.
07:12I just don't trust it.
07:13It's 60-year-old wood and some of it's rotting.
07:17We can't have a party out here because we're worried about it.
07:20I'm not going out here.
07:21I mean, right?
07:22Yeah, I don't blame you.
07:23The deck is cantilevered, which means that there aren't any posts holding it up.
07:27And hopefully, whatever it's attached to, that attachment is good and there's enough support to hold this deck that's just floating.
07:35This, too, you don't like.
07:37The overhang gives us shade so we can be out here all summer.
07:40But it also is too low.
07:42When you're inside looking out, it's in the view.
07:44So I want a new overhang, but up higher so it's out of the view.
07:49Raising the roof is a big deal.
07:52And this I would not do myself.
07:54Okay, good to hear.
07:56Adding a deck, replacing these windows, cutting back the roof.
07:59These are the types of projects I'm actually used to doing.
08:02I'm actually more nervous about the stuff that David's already started inside.
08:06Who did the electrical and the plumbing in this project?
08:09That would be me.
08:11How do you know how to do all of this?
08:13So I used to be an aircraft mechanic before I was a pilot.
08:16Doing home wiring compared to an airplane, it's not that hard.
08:21Okay.
08:21One thing that I'm really seeing here that I've never seen before is flowers in front of framing.
08:30You're really dressing this up.
08:32It kind of distracts from all the work and the ugliness.
08:36There's not one completed area that we're living in right now.
08:41So that's hard.
08:42It's hard to have people over in your construction area because it's not done.
08:45Don't sit there.
08:46Can't sit over here.
08:47Don't put your glass there.
08:48Watch out.
08:48There's wires sticking out.
08:50You know, I just want it done.
08:51And be proud of it instead of it always being kind of in disarray right now.
08:56It's getting to the point where it's frustrating in the kitchen too because I cook a lot.
09:01It's kind of disappointing to have my nice meal on a slab.
09:06And do you actually sit here?
09:07Yeah.
09:07We have almost every meal right here.
09:10It also gives us a visual on my vision of what the island would be.
09:16You mentioned that you've been working on this for four years.
09:19If it's taken this long to get to this stage, you're now injured.
09:25He really misses doing it.
09:28And the fact that he can't finish it, he's hard on himself.
09:33It's on our mind all the time, every day.
09:35And instead of talking about the trips we want to take and the things we want to do,
09:40we're talking about the house that isn't done.
09:43Without help, I don't think we could do it.
09:45That's why we're kind of stuck.
09:47I'm not used to asking for help when it comes to home renovation.
09:50He does.
09:51So this is new for me.
09:52And it's one of those things where you have to be ready to hand this over.
09:58I'm ready.
09:59Yeah?
10:00Yeah.
10:01I am.
10:03I am.
10:04And I've done a budget.
10:06Let me show you.
10:07Done a budget?
10:08So when I ran through what things would cost, I came out to $410,000.
10:15And I've already bought the windows, which is another $100,000 above that number.
10:19So it's already a pretty steep budget.
10:22Especially for a retired person, I can't just make it up by going to work a few extra days.
10:28I can't say I've ever had anybody hand me a budget.
10:32This is new.
10:33I just want to make sure that we're on the same page.
10:36Right.
10:37And that my budget matches your budget.
10:39I know there will be some differences.
10:40This is a really big undertaking.
10:45The amount of construction that's going into this project is huge.
10:49While the budget is bigger than a lot of my other projects for what we're trying to do here, it's not a big budget.
10:57And at the end of the day, David's retired.
10:59Every cent matters.
11:00The problem is, I don't want to have all that money in the house, and then I can't afford to stay here.
11:06That would be a bad choice.
11:08Right.
11:09I'm hopeful that we haven't gotten to that point.
11:12Gotta get a job.
11:14Oh, I need a job.
11:15Living like this for a while longer would be, I mean, we'd do it.
11:22It wouldn't be fun.
11:23I'd be drinking a lot of wine.
11:25Okay.
11:28All right.
11:28It's so nice to meet both of you.
11:30I'll get back to you.
11:31Okay.
11:32David's plans are ambitious for a homeowner.
11:35Like, really ambitious.
11:36Like, not possible.
11:38They're also really ambitious for a professional.
11:41I want to make sure that we're being realistic,
11:43so I have to go through everything that he's thought up
11:46and really dig in as to what we can actually do.
11:54I still need to iron out the budget,
11:56but having a big project like this in Utah to showcase my skills
11:59is too good an opportunity to pass up.
12:02So I've decided to take on this wreck.
12:04Brynn and David have cleared out, and they're going on vacation.
12:07David will be stress-free and away from the project,
12:09and I have a contractor.
12:12John?
12:13Can you come let me in?
12:14It's locked.
12:15Hi.
12:16Hi.
12:17How are you?
12:17I'm good.
12:18How are you?
12:18This is my second project working with John as a general contractor.
12:22John and I have worked previously on a historic home.
12:24If I was going to work with him again,
12:26it had to be a project that felt challenging,
12:29and I think this is just that.
12:31It's going to be a lot.
12:33Yep.
12:34You have a smile.
12:35But it'll be fun.
12:37See?
12:37Based on the budget that David came up with,
12:41he thinks it's going to be $410,000 to do this renovation.
12:44I know that doesn't include everything,
12:46so I'm going to have to go through this budget
12:48and figure out where we're really going to be.
12:50Here's what I'm thinking for this space.
12:52You walk in the front door,
12:54and the first thing that you see is this view
12:56because this wall comes down.
12:58The tray ceiling will go away.
13:00Really, the biggest part of this renovation is this back wall,
13:03and it will go wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling,
13:06with glass that'll look out to this beautiful view.
13:09When you're doing this much glass,
13:12you have incredible engineering
13:14that will have to take place
13:15to get all the glass he's asking for.
13:17The design style for this house I'm calling moody eclectic.
13:22They don't want the house to feel dark,
13:24but they definitely want some darker features in the home.
13:27And then eclectic, just meeting Brynn and David,
13:31eclectic is the first word that comes to mind.
13:33This fireplace is going to become the focal point of the room.
13:36So the fireplace is getting a complete makeover
13:38with a dark-polished lava rock facade
13:40linked by custom walnut storage on either side.
13:43David wants an office,
13:44and will create one near the entry
13:45with more custom cabinetry
13:47to display David's fossils and his geodes.
13:50His desk is going to face new French pocket doors
13:52so he can enjoy the spectacular view.
13:56I guess my next question is these floors.
13:58Is there any way that we can save these,
14:00I mean, knowing that we don't have
14:02the same flooring in the kitchen?
14:03In order to get everything to kind of flow,
14:05you're looking at about $27,000
14:07for a nice engineered floor.
14:09He didn't have anything for flooring in his budget.
14:12Yeah, I don't think he did.
14:13He's done a lot of work in this area, right?
14:16Can we use any of this?
14:17Some of it, the electrical needs to be changed.
14:21Some of it is commercial.
14:23Some of it's residential.
14:24An inspector will not pass the electrical the way it is.
14:27You've got too much mixed stuff in here.
14:30Okay, so new electrical,
14:32and we'll run new engineered hardwood
14:34from the front door
14:35right through to Brynn's brand new kitchen.
14:37We're talking sleek walnut cabinets,
14:39quartzite countertops with a panel-ready fridge,
14:41and a wet bar on one side
14:42with a built-in hutch on the opposite side.
14:44We'll keep the moody vibe going
14:46with a dark backsplash
14:47that pulls everything together,
14:48and the centerpiece,
14:50a massive island with a range on one end
14:52and plenty of seating on the other.
14:53All right, do we talk about the elephant in the room
14:56or out of the room?
14:57You mean the deck
14:59that every time they go out the door, it hurts?
15:01This is really dangerous.
15:03Mm-hmm.
15:03So if we can start the deck
15:04all the way at the corner of the house
15:06and run it all the way
15:08to the other corner of the house,
15:09that's what they really want.
15:10But is that even possible?
15:12What we're going to have to do
15:13is structurally make it more sound
15:15and extend those posts up,
15:17put a nice platform on top,
15:19and that's a lot of work.
15:23He has $82,000 in the budget for this deck.
15:29No.
15:30David had $410,000 as his overall budget,
15:35but it sounds like we're not even close to that.
15:37We're about $560,000 budget-wise right now.
15:41So I think we need to call them
15:42and see what they say.
15:46Hi.
15:47Hello.
15:47His budget was pretty good,
15:50but it didn't include a contractor fee.
15:52It didn't include new flooring,
15:53and it didn't include a lot of the structural
15:56and what was going to be needed
15:57to actually complete the deck that he wants.
16:00It's going to be about $150,000
16:02over the $410,000 that you had
16:06as your bottom-line number on your budget.
16:08So $150,000 more than what I budgeted for,
16:12that's a lot of money.
16:13So Brynn is flying,
16:15so I can't get a hold of her.
16:17What we could get started,
16:19is that possibility, at the $410,000?
16:22The cost of the deck alone is $150,000.
16:26Obviously, we have to do the inside.
16:29So if you want us to get started inside
16:32and forego the deck,
16:35that would get you to your original budget number.
16:38Yeah, obviously, I want to get the house moving along.
16:41I can't make a decision of $150,000
16:44without first talking to Brynn.
16:46But since she and I already discussed the $410,000,
16:50if you're on board and you're willing to do this,
16:53we are too.
16:54Let's get started.
16:56And in a couple days, I can talk to Brynn,
16:58and we can decide if we're going to go forward with the deck
17:01or wait for another season.
17:04Okay, well, just let us know.
17:06We're going to get rocking on the inside here,
17:08and we'll talk to you real soon.
17:10Good luck!
17:12Hopefully, we can do the deck, too.
17:14It needs it.
17:15You guys ready?
17:16Let's do this.
17:17David says that he's ready to hand this project over,
17:25and he's admitted that that's tough,
17:28but he also has done it.
17:29And we've set aside 14 weeks on this project,
17:32and that's longer than most of my project timelines,
17:36but there is so much to dig into here.
17:40I'd help you with that,
17:41but I just had back surgery about eight weeks ago.
17:43Did you really?
17:43So my brother Nephi is going to be doing the heavy lifting with you.
17:47John is overseeing this project
17:49from a general contractor standpoint,
17:52but Nephi, who is John's little brother,
17:54will be here managing the day-to-day.
17:57It actually makes quite a big difference,
17:59just that little spot.
18:01Ready to break into the ceiling?
18:02Yeah.
18:03Let's do it.
18:04Hopefully, this isn't structural, right?
18:06Hopefully, it's just cosmetic,
18:08and we can just take it out,
18:10and it's not a big deal.
18:11Double sheetrock.
18:12I thought you were just weak.
18:15Just kidding.
18:17John told me that 90% of the tray ceilings he sees are cosmetic.
18:24That's a bearing number.
18:26Yes, it is.
18:27And, of course, we're in that 10%.
18:29And, yes, this is structural.
18:32That's the actual roof on the outside.
18:34Yeah, so we're in a bit of a pickle here.
18:37I mean, the goal was to modernize this
18:40and to square off the ceiling
18:42and get rid of that angle.
18:45There's nowhere to even go higher if I wanted to.
18:47This right here cannot go up
18:49because that is structure.
18:51You'd have to raise the entire roof.
18:53Oh, man.
18:55Oh, that's frustrating
18:57because we have to change it.
18:58We have to do something to it.
19:00I think this room would look better
19:01if these were made kind of a coffered ceiling in here.
19:05That might be cool.
19:05And square it off
19:06so it's framed like this
19:08and then goes straight up.
19:09I like that idea.
19:10I think they're going to be stoked
19:11that the angle is gone.
19:12I think it'll be a great look.
19:14Because I would say you don't know
19:18Because you're the only one I want to know
19:21Only one I want to know
19:25David?
19:32I came to get my fans?
19:36There's no way that's true.
19:39I'm very surprised to see David here today.
19:42I thought he was gone.
19:43All right.
19:44I just wanted to see what was going on.
19:46And it's awesome
19:47to be able to see my home opened up
19:49the way I've envisioned it for years.
19:51All right.
19:51Come here.
19:52Come here.
19:52All right.
19:53You should have come through the front door.
19:56Yes.
19:56Because you would have seen that.
19:58Oh!
19:59It's awesome.
20:01That's it.
20:02I just couldn't stay away.
20:03I had to see it.
20:04So I'm sorry.
20:05Please forgive me.
20:07What are you thinking about the deck?
20:09Well, I did just talk to Brynn
20:11and we want to go forward.
20:15Really?
20:15I don't want to wait another year
20:17and go through construction again.
20:20We're going to do it now.
20:21Okay.
20:21I'm excited because I agree.
20:23If we do it all at the same time,
20:25it's actually going to cost less overall
20:27than trying to do it in phases as well.
20:29It makes sense.
20:30All right.
20:30The budget for this project at $560,000
20:33means that this is one of the biggest budget wrecks
20:37I've ever taken on for a client.
20:38How do you feel walking in here?
20:40So what you've done in three hours
20:42would be two weeks for me.
20:43Yeah.
20:44But I am a bit bummed.
20:45I mean, I want to be doing this.
20:47I want to be part of the crew.
20:49I want to be getting my hands dirty.
20:51I don't want you to get hurt.
20:52I don't want to get hurt.
20:53I know.
20:54And I'm sure it's hard to walk away.
20:55Yeah.
20:56Yeah.
20:57Yeah.
20:57But you're here now,
20:59so you can grab your fans.
21:01Maybe I'll just drag it out so I can stay longer.
21:05I see that happening.
21:07I have worked with a lot of people like David
21:10over the years,
21:11and it's hard for him to let go.
21:14This is his baby.
21:15It's what he loves to do.
21:17It's his house.
21:18It's his project.
21:19It's his...
21:20It's how he fills his days right now.
21:27I've gotten the information that I need out of him,
21:31the help that I need out of him,
21:32and I need him to just let us do our thing now.
21:34I need him to trust me.
21:47This project is coming along.
21:49Okay, so our framing in the entry is done.
21:52The view is here.
21:53This is what it's all about.
21:54The electricians are here.
21:56All of our cans are going in.
21:57This ceiling, it's not at an angle anymore.
22:00It's squared off.
22:02Nephi is over here welding the posts
22:04that have to hold up this entire exterior wall.
22:07Woo!
22:09A lot going on.
22:15Hello.
22:16How's it going?
22:17Getting ready to leave tomorrow to go to Portugal
22:19and enjoying ourselves.
22:21Okay, so I've sent you a box,
22:24and what I want to do is go through
22:27some of the elements of your design,
22:29the big ones.
22:30So I've got the same thing here.
22:32We've got a white oak, wide plank,
22:34engineered hardwood floor.
22:36Love it.
22:37Okay, so let's build our design off of that.
22:39So this piece of walnut,
22:42this is what I'm proposing for your kitchen cabinetry.
22:45And I love walnut.
22:46I do too.
22:47That's really nice.
22:48The tile that you have there,
22:50that is the backsplash that I'm proposing.
22:54This is a handcrafted ceramic tile.
22:57It has some variation in it.
22:59Oh!
22:59That would be nice.
23:00Yeah.
23:01Yeah.
23:01It's all going to equal this moody, eclectic vibe,
23:05and that's what Brynn and David want.
23:06They don't want a kitchen where you walk in
23:08and it feels like everybody else's kitchen.
23:10If you're comfortable, I'm comfortable with it.
23:13You sure?
23:14Yeah.
23:14I trust you on this.
23:16I guess I'm getting more comfortable
23:18with releasing that piece of control.
23:23Let it go.
23:25See you soon.
23:29This deck project is massive.
23:32So before we even start building the deck,
23:34there's a lot of prep work.
23:35We had to put all new footings in.
23:38There's also a ton of steel.
23:40Like the amount of steel that's going to go into this deck,
23:43it feels like we're building a skyscraper.
23:46Oh, my gosh.
23:47I can see the crane.
23:48I'm only halfway up the hill.
23:52So we're adding a steel frame,
23:53and this is going to function
23:54not only as the structure for the deck,
23:57but as a sunshade as well.
23:59If you didn't know that I was in town before,
24:02I think a giant crane on top of the hill
24:05overlooking the whole city
24:06is a good way to say,
24:08hey, I'm here.
24:09I'm doing big things.
24:10Hi.
24:13This is wild.
24:14Oh, my gosh.
24:16Not much gets me rattled,
24:18but a crane is always a little bit of a day
24:21where I'm, like, on edge a bit.
24:22It's a lot of money on the line
24:24and a lot of lives on the line, Chesa.
24:26We should be all set.
24:31So this crane is going to go over the house
24:35and it has to land on the posts in the backyard.
24:37Four posts.
24:37This is wild.
24:40We have 2,400 pounds up above the house.
24:43We have no room for air.
24:47We're at 5,200 feet of elevation here.
24:50The winds, when they kick up,
24:52are very dangerous.
24:55We're not in the clear yet.
24:57Table down already.
25:00Just a touch.
25:02Nephi says he's confident.
25:04I just hope it's not false confidence.
25:05Nephi, you got it?
25:11Nobody be under our feet.
25:17A little bit more.
25:19Good.
25:22Woo!
25:23It's in!
25:24It's set!
25:25Nice!
25:26You feel good?
25:27Oh, yeah.
25:28It's over the house and it's on the poles,
25:29so we're good.
25:30Oh, man.
25:31Nicely done.
25:32Woo!
25:33Everything is securely fastened
25:35and welded into the frame,
25:37and this is going to be the structure
25:39that holds the roof
25:40that's going to be above the deck.
25:45This is the biggest project
25:48I've taken on in Utah thus far.
25:50This is one of the most prestigious neighborhoods
25:53in Salt Lake City.
25:54These are the types of projects
25:55where I can really shine.
25:58So to get more of these projects,
26:00I have to get this one right.
26:01There's no room for error.
26:03The stakes have never been higher.
26:04Like, this could make or break my business.
26:07All the progress that I've made
26:09lead kind of all hinges on this project.
26:11This is half of the windows.
26:16There's so many that have to go in.
26:18They're 300 pounds each.
26:21These windows are an extra $100,000
26:23that David already paid for
26:25outside of our budget.
26:29These custom windows had a 13-week lead time,
26:32and so if for some reason
26:33these windows don't fit,
26:35we don't have time to order
26:37another set of windows.
26:39Not quite.
26:40It's nerve-wracking
26:42because if I'm not involved
26:43in the ordering,
26:44the chances of it fitting
26:46in the design that now
26:47I'm in charge of are less.
26:51Well, that's not going in.
26:54Now, it looks like we need
26:55about an inch more.
26:57We'll have to cut that two by six
26:58and pull those two pieces of plywood out.
27:00Is this something that we can do
27:01and still get this window in today?
27:04I think we can make it happen.
27:05Let's do it.
27:06So the size isn't wrong.
27:08We just have to tweak the opening
27:09a little bit,
27:10and it's going to fit.
27:13We're in.
27:14Yes!
27:15Good work, guys.
27:16Just the amount of structural work
27:18that's gone into
27:19making these windows a reality,
27:21we're really only gaining
27:22six inches of glass.
27:24I'd like to say
27:25I don't think it's worth it,
27:26but I do.
27:27I think that having
27:28the back of this house
27:29just glass
27:30is something that
27:32David's never going to regret.
27:33But, yeah, it's a lot of work.
27:35And that slides.
27:36Real nice.
27:36Watch your fingers.
27:37I've got to test this.
27:38Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
27:39The sun is shining
27:41and the sky is blue.
27:43What's a better way
27:44than to spend it with you?
27:45On a day.
27:46Today, today, today, today.
27:48All I want to do
27:50is party with you.
27:51Hey!
27:52Here we are driving
27:54in South Carolina.
27:55A little bit different
27:57than Portugal,
27:58where we just got back from.
27:59We got David
28:00and we got Sir Watson.
28:03Thinking about the house at all?
28:05Yeah.
28:05Yeah?
28:06Thinking about
28:06how nice it is
28:08that I'm not stressing
28:09over the different stages.
28:11How's it going?
28:12Good, how are you?
28:13You guys made it up the hill.
28:15Barely.
28:15A lot of weight in that thing.
28:18Woo-office, this way.
28:20Oh, my gosh, this looks good.
28:22You can see the floors are in,
28:23the fireplace is framed.
28:24He's got this roof structure
28:26that's way up there,
28:27so you don't have anything
28:28in the way of your view
28:30except for Nephi.
28:31That is the view.
28:32This is the view.
28:34This is epic.
28:35I mean, what a difference.
28:37It took us seven weeks
28:38to get to this stage.
28:40Look at these cabinets.
28:41Woo!
28:42They look great.
28:43I feel like the walnut
28:44gives that, like, rich depth
28:47that, you know,
28:48a lot of other cabinetry
28:49wouldn't be delivering.
28:51Right.
28:51And that's what
28:52Wren especially
28:53is looking for in this kitchen.
28:54Yeah, snuggly.
28:55I call it snuggling.
28:56Snuggly, I love that.
28:57Yeah, these are snuggly cabinets.
28:58These cabinets give that richness.
29:01They give that depth,
29:02that warm color
29:03that are really going to feel luxurious,
29:06that are going to be timeless,
29:08that are going to last.
29:09That's been a big part
29:11of the design for this kitchen
29:12and really for this whole project.
29:23With only two weeks to go,
29:25things are moving.
29:25I tried to lean into
29:27David's love of geology
29:28with a lava rock tile
29:29on the fireplace.
29:30In David's office,
29:31the custom shelves
29:32are almost all in.
29:33In Brynn's kitchen,
29:34the mini bar
29:35is almost ready
29:37for cocktails.
29:38And then the island
29:39is in place
29:40and ready for
29:41a massive
29:42quartzite countertop.
29:46Wow!
29:47Look how big it is!
29:49It's just a half.
29:50Of course.
29:53This island is massive.
29:56It's 12 feet by 6 feet,
29:58cut out of a mountain in Brazil.
30:00It's quartzite.
30:01It's durable.
30:02It's beautiful.
30:03It's everything
30:04that this kitchen
30:05was not before.
30:07Oh my gosh.
30:08Look at that vein.
30:09Brynn is going to lose her mind
30:11when she sees this.
30:12The veining in this island
30:13is bold.
30:14And that's what
30:15Brynn and David wanted.
30:16They were like,
30:17she's like,
30:17the last thing I want
30:18is something that's boring.
30:20Having a dark backsplash
30:21in the kitchen.
30:22Again,
30:23something that most people
30:24would probably shy away from,
30:25but they're on board.
30:26Lava rock,
30:27they're obsessed with that.
30:28And I'm obsessed with that.
30:29I've never used this material.
30:43Nice.
30:44Okay.
30:45Whoa!
30:47I did it, Mommy.
30:52You want to go towards
30:52the playground?
30:53Yeah.
30:54Brynn and David's house
30:55is almost done.
30:56We've got our kitchen
30:56being finished.
30:57The glass pocket doors
30:59are going in in the office.
31:00We've got lights going in.
31:02So it's nice to have
31:03a little bit of time.
31:05We're enjoying our summer.
31:06We've got Mom's bike camp
31:07going, right?
31:09That's where you park.
31:10You want to play
31:10in the playground?
31:11Yeah.
31:13Uh-oh.
31:15Hold on one sec,
31:16I'm going to take a call.
31:17Hi, Nephi.
31:19How's it going?
31:20Could be better.
31:22Uh-oh.
31:22I don't like the sound of that.
31:24What's going on?
31:24The decking material
31:26still hasn't shown up.
31:28Last thing we've heard
31:29so far from the lumber yard
31:31is that it's still stuck
31:32at the port.
31:33This is the flooring
31:34of the deck, right?
31:35Correct.
31:35Oh, man.
31:37So do you have, like,
31:38a definite tracking date
31:39on it?
31:41No, not until
31:42it clears the port.
31:44I'm concerned that
31:45we're not going to be able
31:46to deliver this project
31:47on time.
31:48And I did ask David
31:51to trust me.
31:52And I asked Brynn
31:53to move out,
31:55which is a big deal.
31:56So, Brynn,
31:57are you thinking
31:58about the house?
31:59Yeah.
31:59And what are you thinking?
32:01How pretty it's going to be.
32:03So I would feel bad
32:04for both of them
32:05if I had to ask for them
32:07to give me more time.
32:08I have to get this done.
32:09Jasmine, can't wait
32:10to see the house.
32:12But to be there soon.
32:22Oh, nice.
32:23We got the deck boards.
32:25Woo!
32:25This is a lot of wood.
32:27Hi, Nephi.
32:29Hey, Jasmine.
32:29I heard rumor
32:32of this decking material
32:33being here,
32:34but the rumor's true.
32:35Rumor is true.
32:37Okay, so this is the
32:38flooring of the deck, right?
32:40Correct.
32:41I thought that
32:42it was going to be here,
32:43what, like five plus days ago,
32:44right?
32:44It should have been
32:45five days ago.
32:46What happened?
32:47Container that this was on
32:48actually got confiscated
32:49to be searched.
32:51Wow.
32:52Obviously, the timeline
32:53were right up against
32:54our Friday deadline.
32:56The question is
32:57as if it's going to be done,
32:58huh?
32:58Yeah.
32:59Yes, I will.
33:01Okay.
33:02I would offer to help you
33:02with this deck,
33:03but I feel like I'm just
33:04going to get in the way.
33:05Honestly.
33:05I agree with you.
33:06Yeah, see?
33:18Oh, it feels good in here.
33:21Look at this deck.
33:22Oh, my gosh.
33:24Wow.
33:25And it's so solid.
33:26Really, this is a whole
33:28nother living space.
33:29It's 740 square feet.
33:31That's huge.
33:32We just doubled the size
33:33of this living space.
33:35Nephi did a stellar job
33:36on this deck.
33:37This was a huge undertaking,
33:38and as of three days ago,
33:40I was pretty sure
33:41we were going to have to
33:42call David and Brynn
33:43and tell them
33:44we needed more time.
33:45And now it's done.
33:47All this natural light
33:48coming in,
33:49it allows us to be moodier
33:51in our design.
33:52And that's fun, too,
33:53because we don't have to worry
33:54about this ever
33:55becoming dark in here.
33:56It is bright.
33:57It will always be bright.
33:59They've got all their
33:59canned lights in.
34:00We've got our light fixtures.
34:02Like, how fun are these?
34:04I can't say I've done
34:06a moody, eclectic
34:07mountain design before.
34:09Their house is one of a kind,
34:11and they're one of a kind,
34:12and their design style
34:14is definitely something
34:15new for me.
34:16You got all the geodes.
34:17These are David's
34:18prized possessions.
34:19It's going to be like
34:20a museum in here.
34:21Oh, my gosh.
34:22That's so beautiful.
34:23Look at that.
34:25That really is beautiful.
34:26These are real different
34:27than the rocks
34:27my child brings me.
34:33Brynn and David needed a house
34:35that wasn't under construction.
34:37They needed a house
34:38where they could entertain
34:40and host their family
34:41and live their day-to-day
34:42routines and schedules
34:44and not have to worry
34:46about working on the house.
34:47David's back doesn't allow him
34:49to work on the house anymore,
34:51and so really,
34:52their only option
34:53was to call and ask for help.
34:55David and Brynn,
34:55they had really high expectations
34:57for this project
34:58and for this house,
35:00and they had a vision.
35:02And so my interpretation
35:04of that vision,
35:05I just hope it's what they wanted
35:07and what they were expecting.
35:09I don't know.
35:10I guess only time will tell.
35:16Hi.
35:16Hello.
35:17Nice to see you.
35:19We need all the hugs
35:20we can get.
35:21I know, right?
35:23Oh, my goodness.
35:24Welcome home.
35:26It's been 14 weeks.
35:27Yeah.
35:28Which is a long time.
35:29Big budget project.
35:31I mean,
35:32I don't need to tell you that.
35:33Yes.
35:33But I had $560,000
35:36is what you gave me
35:37to work with.
35:38Right.
35:38But of the $560,000,
35:40we are on budget.
35:42But I spent every penny.
35:44Okay.
35:45I didn't expect
35:46to get money back.
35:47No.
35:47No.
35:48When you handed
35:49this project over,
35:49I know that was a challenge.
35:51Like, for you, personally,
35:52that was hard, right?
35:53Yes.
35:54And the goal was
35:55to not only give your back
35:57a break,
35:58but to give you a break, right?
35:59It was a big project.
36:00Big project.
36:01Mm-hmm.
36:02And I move slow now.
36:03All right.
36:03Do you want to see inside?
36:04Yes.
36:04Oh, yes.
36:05Yeah?
36:05Yeah.
36:05All right.
36:06I'm going to follow you.
36:07You go ahead.
36:07Oh, we're going?
36:08Yeah?
36:08Okay.
36:09Let's see it.
36:11Wow.
36:12Oh, my goodness.
36:15Look at that.
36:17The wall.
36:17Look at this.
36:18This is spectacular.
36:22I think I'm going to cry.
36:25Oh, my little cherry.
36:27Oh, it's spectacular.
36:28Wow.
36:29That's so much better.
36:31It doesn't look like
36:31a 1968 home anymore.
36:34Well, there was a wall.
36:35Where we were standing, right?
36:36Oh, it's amazing.
36:38The house doesn't end.
36:40It just continues on
36:41into infinity.
36:44It's a whole different house.
36:45It was your idea
36:46to get rid of the header.
36:47Yeah.
36:48It was six inches,
36:49which in the big scheme of things,
36:51most people, I think,
36:52would be like,
36:53just leave it.
36:53It's fine, whatever.
36:55What a difference.
36:55What a difference.
36:57Okay, so what do you think
36:58of the floor?
36:59This looks so much better.
37:00It makes a huge difference.
37:01The parquet was nice,
37:02but it never would have looked
37:04as modern and consistent
37:06as this does.
37:07And this room,
37:09you had a bunch
37:10of different furniture in here.
37:11Everything.
37:12A lot going on.
37:13Wow.
37:14Look how nice
37:14the fireplace looks.
37:15That's beautiful.
37:17Is that lava rock
37:18on the fireplace?
37:19It is.
37:20Oh, my goodness.
37:22He's a rock man.
37:23This is a sliced lava rock.
37:26Nice.
37:26You did that for me.
37:28You knew I'd appreciate that.
37:30So nice.
37:31This mantle,
37:32ugh, it's beautiful.
37:34It's beautiful.
37:34And the walnut ties in
37:36throughout the entire design.
37:37Yeah.
37:37And I love walnut.
37:39You know I love rocks.
37:40It's a good choice.
37:42What about the ceilings?
37:43Yeah.
37:44So much better.
37:44I mean, the old ceiling in here
37:46had these diagonals
37:48that looked dated
37:49and they didn't serve a function.
37:52And there was no light.
37:52No light.
37:53Now it seems to have a function.
37:55Yeah.
37:55There's a recess cove there
37:56for lighting.
37:57Now you have
37:58a proper living room.
38:00Somewhere you can entertain.
38:01Somewhere you can just hang out.
38:03And it connects
38:03to the rest of the spaces.
38:05Let's go in the dining room.
38:06So there was a wall here.
38:08Yes.
38:09This was closed off.
38:10Yes.
38:11Now it's wide open.
38:13Great.
38:13This was your plan.
38:14Just had to be,
38:15actually,
38:16it had to happen.
38:17I mean,
38:17there were two by fours here.
38:18This whole area was really,
38:20in my opinion,
38:21a mess.
38:22It was a mess.
38:23Oh, I did this
38:24when she was on a trip
38:24in London tore out another wall
38:26and freaked her out
38:27a little bit more.
38:28You did.
38:29Not anymore.
38:30Not anymore.
38:30That's right.
38:32I got nothing else
38:33to work on in here.
38:34We're saving your back.
38:36This is the whole thing,
38:36remember?
38:37That's right.
38:38I could get new hobbies.
38:40Can I go in the kitchen?
38:41Of course.
38:42Yes.
38:42Let's do it.
38:44Oh.
38:48That is amazing.
38:50Brent,
38:50this is your kitchen.
38:51Oh, mine.
38:52I love it.
38:57This is amazing.
38:58Yeah, you have this,
38:59like, deep thing.
38:59It's a life in it.
39:01I love it.
39:02And did you guys see this?
39:03Oh, look how nice.
39:05Yeah.
39:05Just a little bit.
39:05That ties in the two areas.
39:07Ties everything together.
39:08Very nice.
39:08It's beautiful.
39:09It's beautiful.
39:09Yeah.
39:10Oh, you're crying again.
39:11I know, I can't.
39:12Yeah, because it was,
39:13it was so janky before.
39:16It was awful.
39:17It was like...
39:18It wasn't awful.
39:18But it wasn't,
39:20like, this.
39:20This is like,
39:21I've never had a kitchen like this.
39:23Yeah.
39:24It's nice.
39:25It is nice.
39:26It's a lot to take in.
39:28I didn't expect it to be this nice.
39:30It's so pretty.
39:32And it's,
39:33I mean,
39:34there's a lot of work.
39:35Y'all did a lot of work in here.
39:38This was probably
39:39one of my biggest design challenges,
39:40was figuring this out.
39:42And now it's timeless.
39:44It's unique.
39:46It's beautiful.
39:46You have the bold, dark colors.
39:47You have the island
39:49that has this beautiful veining on it.
39:51This is a one-of-a-kind kitchen.
39:52I've never designed a kitchen like this before.
39:54Wow.
39:55Oh, there's beer.
39:57Now that's a refrigerator.
39:59Now that I come home,
40:00I can kick off my work shoes
40:03and get to my happy place,
40:05my kitchen.
40:05You'll never have to take me out again.
40:07You heard it here.
40:10May we.
40:11I'm dying to go out there.
40:13May we?
40:13Yes.
40:14Yeah, let's go outside.
40:15Wow.
40:17Holy.
40:18Oh, my God.
40:19Look at this thing.
40:23I always wanted a big deck.
40:25Wait, four people.
40:26This is what you could have out here before.
40:28Do you remember?
40:28Four people.
40:30Now we could entertain out here.
40:32And it goes all the way around the house.
40:34I've never been in the cockpit of a plane,
40:35but I feel like this is...
40:36This is the view from the cockpit.
40:38This feels like a room to me.
40:41Yeah.
40:41Like another, I mean,
40:43a legit extension of your house.
40:45This overhang is not in the view.
40:47It is not.
40:48From inside,
40:49you don't even know
40:49that any of this structure exists.
40:51No, it's...
40:52And then you come out here
40:53and you're like, oh, wow.
40:54Like, to put that above the roof line,
40:57that was the only way to do it.
40:58It's amazing.
40:59We really like to be outside,
41:01and this is gonna be used a lot.
41:04One more room, though, Bryn.
41:06My office.
41:07Dun-dun-dun.
41:07Are you ready?
41:08Yeah, I'm ready.
41:09All right.
41:09This house didn't have an office before.
41:11I know.
41:12Yeah.
41:13I still can't believe the space.
41:15Okay.
41:15Oh, yes.
41:16Here we go.
41:17Glass doors.
41:18They're beautiful.
41:20Wow.
41:21Really nice.
41:22Right?
41:23Perfect.
41:23Yeah.
41:24Perfect.
41:25Look at those.
41:26Oh, my treasures.
41:28We went with, like,
41:28kind of a museum vibe in here.
41:30Yeah.
41:30That's kind of what we were going for.
41:32Pilots call these rooms the I love me room
41:35because we adorn them with the stuff from our careers
41:38and places we've traveled, so.
41:40Yeah, there you go.
41:41You knocked it out of the park.
41:42It's perfect.
41:44I had a vision of how I wanted the house to look,
41:47and I'd say Jasmine executed it exactly how my vision was.
41:52So what have you learned in this process?
41:54Maybe this home renovation hobby of mine.
41:57Maybe I've evolved now.
41:59Maybe I'm more of the idea guy now rather than doing it.
42:03And that's fine, too.
42:04Can't wait to live in it.
42:05Yeah, me too.
42:06Can I have the keys?
42:08I think this renovation proves that, you know,
42:11I can work with clients who have big ideas,
42:14and that's why I came to Utah.
42:16That's why I continue to do projects
42:19because I like the challenge.
42:20So, yeah, I'm really proud of how this one turned out.
42:24To adorn our new house.
42:26Oh, my favorite thing.
42:28Flowers.
42:29A major construction project like this
42:32with me doing a lot of it, it takes a lot of time.
42:35And now the house is done.
42:37Yeah.
42:37We can take more vacations,
42:38spend more time with the kids and the grandkids,
42:41and just enjoy life a little more.
42:44There you go.
42:45To our new home.
42:45You got to do it on a knee.
42:46Oh.
42:47Oh.
42:48Oh.
42:49Don't do it.
42:49Don't spill it on me.
