00:00We wrecked the house, for sure.
00:04That's a good start.
00:06I'll do the rest later.
00:07I can see the back of your TV.
00:09I can see right into the other room.
00:10It's beautiful, isn't it?
00:11Yeah.
00:12Without help, I don't think we could do it.
00:14I mean, there's literally no part of this house that is
00:17livable.
00:18And so where do you start?
00:22That's the actual roof.
00:23And yes, this is structural.
00:25Ah!
00:26Ah!
00:27Well, that's not going in.
00:29This is one of the biggest budget wrecks
00:31I've ever taken on for a client.
00:33It feels like we're building a skyscraper.
00:35This is wild.
00:372,400 pounds up above the house.
00:39We have no room for error.
00:41Nobody be under that paint.
00:43We're not in the clear yet.
00:45Oh, my gosh.
00:48Boom!
00:48Between social media, how-to videos, and baseless tutorials,
00:52inspired DIYers are taking on bigger and bigger projects,
00:57leaving their homes in complete chaos.
01:00What have you done?
01:01There's a big hole in the wall.
01:03The flood needed.
01:04This was a DIY gone wrong.
01:05What have we started?
01:07This is sketchy.
01:08You step in the wrong spot.
01:10You're going through.
01:12Yeah.
01:14For years, I've helped families in Southern California
01:17restore order to their dream homes.
01:18Ho, ho, ho!
01:20We're done!
01:22Now I've moved my family to Park City, Utah,
01:24where I'm rebuilding my business,
01:26and I know it's not going to be easy.
01:28New town, new business, new wrecks.
01:31Today, I'm in a part of Salt Lake City called The Avenues.
01:43I've actually never been this far up the hill,
01:45and it looks like, according to my navigation,
01:47I'm only going up.
01:50So, you know, trying to build my business here in Utah,
01:53I put out a call on social media, and Brynn responded.
01:57I was the one that contacted Jasmine for help.
02:00Without me knowing?
02:01Yes.
02:03Brynn is a flight attendant, and David is a retired pilot.
02:07Her silly sense of humor is what attracted me initially to her.
02:11And Brynn.
02:12Oh.
02:13I was trying to think so.
02:15Oh, thank you.
02:18For me, the number one most important thing in a house
02:21is the view.
02:22The location has to be right to have the best view.
02:25So I'm out on the deck.
02:27This is like sitting in the cockpit and looking out.
02:29We found the house four and a half years ago.
02:32I walk in, and I could feel it had our energy.
02:35We liked it.
02:36But it was very 1968.
02:38A lot of little rooms, chopped up spaces.
02:41Not the best house, but the best view.
02:45I'm going to take this wall down behind me.
02:47It should be opened up to the den.
02:50I plan to change the house by taking out walls, opening up the rooms.
02:54That's a good start.
02:55I'll do the rest later.
02:57I see myself as a hobbyist general contractor.
03:01Working alone, I usually think, oh, I can do it.
03:04And it was only, I don't know, a seven-foot-long beam.
03:07And lifting it up, I ruptured a disc in my lower back.
03:12And it's painful.
03:13Just slide it because you're back.
03:15The doctor said, you know, you've got to stop lifting heavy things over your head.
03:18But it's frustrating because every day I want to go do something.
03:22So I'm getting ready to go.
03:24And it's kind of like an obstacle course to get out.
03:27If it was one thing, you could maybe ignore it or put a plant in front of it, whatever.
03:30Now it's almost every room.
03:33I see the end result.
03:35I just physically can't do it anymore.
03:38Oh, who is this?
03:39This is Watson.
03:40Hi, David.
03:40Jasmine.
03:41Hi, Brynn.
03:42Nice to meet you.
03:43This is Watson.
03:44Oh, my God.
03:45He's massive.
03:48He's a big boy.
03:49Oh, wow.
03:50We're really walking right into this.
03:52Right into it.
03:5315 months ago, I started this.
03:55OK.
03:56And then I hurt my back.
03:57And then it's kind of stalled.
03:59Yeah.
03:59So did you hurt yourself actually working on the house?
04:02Yes.
04:02I took out this bearing wall.
04:04And when I was putting up the headers.
04:07Oof.
04:07And then that's it.
04:08So you just live with back pain.
04:10So when you're doing this work, do you have an engineer that you're working with?
04:14Yes.
04:15I always hire an engineer before I start doing work.
04:18Yeah.
04:19Big load off there.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Yeah.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Let's get into the house.
04:24What's going on here?
04:25We're changing the entire floor plan.
04:26We didn't like the fact that when you walked in, you can't see out.
04:30The view.
04:31So you come in the front door.
04:32This wall would go away.
04:33Oh.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Nice, huh?
04:36You walk in and you see the view.
04:37Oh, bazinga.
04:38So taking this wall down is really important.
04:43And then over here would be my office on the other side of the table.
04:47David has some personality traits of a pilot.
04:50He's a perfectionist.
04:51He's a perfectionist and he likes to have hands on everything.
04:54I've had a lot of time to think about what it will feel like to have somebody else work
04:59on my home.
05:00It'll be hard for you.
05:01Well, it is my home.
05:02I think I could be of help by sending an email every now and then.
05:07Whether they listen to it, I don't know, but it'll make me feel better.
05:10Wow.
05:11Now I see the view.
05:13I also see a bear.
05:15Well, that's Brent's.
05:16I have an animal problem.
05:19My style is all over the place.
05:23I would say modern and clean, but I got so much stuff that it's kind of cluttered.
05:28You have a lot of stuff.
05:30A lot of grass.
05:31Yeah.
05:32What is this room?
05:33So it is our living room and our dining room.
05:36So you've got rocks.
05:37Rocks and fossils.
05:38Like a ton of them.
05:39That's a rib bone from the Tyrannosaurus rex.
05:4270 million years old.
05:43Oh, wow.
05:45What's your dream for the fireplace?
05:47I guess I would just like it to look more appealing, to have a place on either side of
05:52it for some of my collectibles.
05:54The problem in this room was there's the crown holding and the...
05:57The crown holding and the ceiling's kind of weird.
05:59I don't know what was going on.
06:01I would square it off more.
06:02I don't like that.
06:03We don't like the pitch.
06:05That's something you have to kind of dig in and understand why they're like this.
06:09Right.
06:10We'll just have to see.
06:11What happened to this wall here?
06:12We always wanted the feel of a great big open room.
06:15So I tore it open to explore.
06:17I can see the back of your TV.
06:19I can see right into the other room.
06:20It's beautiful, isn't it?
06:21Yeah.
06:22I mean, normally, if I wasn't in the pain I'm in, I would have taken down the rest of
06:27this wall.
06:28It just got too painful, so I stopped.
06:30Which is fair.
06:31Yeah.
06:32But now this is...
06:33Now this is what it is.
06:34What about the windows?
06:35You mentioned you want to open this up a little bit.
06:38I've already bought the new windows, so my thought is the bay window, it goes away.
06:43And I think it should be glass from corner to corner, floor to ceiling.
06:48So this whole space is just the view coming into the house.
06:52I don't disagree.
06:53I think it's really ambitious, but that's the dream, right?
06:57To be able to just have that glass wall.
06:59And we put a table in front of that door because we're afraid of somebody walking out
07:04of it and it doesn't go anywhere.
07:06That door was like that when you bought the house?
07:08Yeah.
07:09I think it's been like that for 60 years.
07:11That should have the deck come over.
07:13The big deck going all the way around the house.
07:15This deck, walk me through this.
07:17We normally don't let more than four or five people out here at a time.
07:21I just don't trust it.
07:22It's 60-year-old wood and some of it's rotting.
07:26We can't have a party out here because we're worried about it.
07:29I'm not going out here.
07:30I mean, right?
07:31Yeah, I don't blame you.
07:32The deck is cantilevered, which means that there aren't any posts.
07:35Holding it up.
07:36And hopefully, whatever it's attached to, that attachment is good.
07:39And there's enough support to hold this deck that's just floating.
07:44This, too, you don't like.
07:46The overhang gives us shade so we can be out here all summer.
07:49But it also is too low.
07:51When you're inside looking out, it's in the view.
07:53So I want a new overhang, but up higher so it's out of the view.
07:57Raising the roof is a big deal.
08:00This is a big deal.
08:01And this I would not do myself.
08:03Okay, good to hear.
08:05Adding a deck, replacing these windows, cutting back the roof.
08:09These are the types of projects I'm actually used to doing.
08:11I'm actually more nervous about the stuff that David's already started inside.
08:15Who did the electrical and the plumbing in this project?
08:19That would be me.
08:20How do you know how to do all of this?
08:22So I used to be an aircraft mechanic before I was a pilot.
08:25Doing home wiring compared to an airplane, it's not that hard.
08:30Okay.
08:31One thing that I'm really seeing here that I've never seen before is flowers in front of framing.
08:39You're really dressing this up.
08:41It kind of distracts from all the work and the ugliness.
08:45There's not one completed area that we're living in right now.
08:49Right.
08:50So that's hard.
08:51It's hard to have people over in your construction area because it's not done.
08:54Don't sit there.
08:55Can't sit over here.
08:56Don't put your glass there.
08:57Watch out.
08:58There's wires sticking out.
08:59You know, I just want it done.
09:00And be proud of it instead of it always being kind of in disarray right now.
09:05It's getting to the point where it's frustrating in the kitchen too because I cook a lot.
09:11It's kind of disappointing to have my nice meal on a slab.
09:15And do you actually sit here?
09:16Yeah.
09:17We have almost every meal right here.
09:19It also gives us a visual on my vision of what the island would be.
09:25You mentioned that you've been working on this for four years.
09:29If it's taken this long to get to this stage, you're now injured.
09:35He really misses doing it.
09:37And the fact that he can't finish it, it's, he's hard on himself.
09:42It's on our mind all the time, every day.
09:45And instead of talking about the trips we want to take and the things we want to do, we're talking about the house that isn't done.
09:52Without help?
09:53Without help?
09:54I don't think we could do it.
09:55That's why we're kind of stuck.
09:56I'm not used to asking for help.
09:58Yeah.
09:59He does.
10:00He does.
10:01Yeah.
10:02So this is new for me.
10:03It's one of those things where you have to be ready to hand this over.
10:07I'm ready.
10:08Yeah?
10:09Yeah.
10:10I am.
10:11I am.
10:12And I've done a budget.
10:15Let me show you.
10:16Done a budget?
10:17Oh, wow.
10:18So when I, when I ran through what things would cost, I came out to $410,000 and I've already bought the windows, which is another $100,000 above that number.
10:29So it's already a pretty steep budget, especially for a retired person. I can't just make it up by going to work a few extra days.
10:37I can't say I've ever had anybody hand me a budget. This is new.
10:42I just want to make sure that, you know, we're on the same page.
10:45Right.
10:46And that my budget matches your budget.
10:48I know there will be some differences.
10:50This is a really big undertaking. The amount of construction that's going into this project is huge.
10:58While the budget is bigger than a lot of my other projects for what we're trying to do here, it's not a big budget.
11:06And at the end of the day, David's retired. Every cent matters.
11:10The problem is I don't want to have all that money in the house and then I can't afford to stay here. That would be a bad choice.
11:17Right.
11:18I'm hopeful that we haven't gotten to that point.
11:21Gotta get a job.
11:23Oh, I need a job.
11:26Living like this for a while longer would be, I mean, we'd do it. It wouldn't be fun.
11:33I'd be drinking a lot of wine.
11:35Okay.
11:37All right. Thank you.
11:38It's so nice to meet both of you.
11:39I'll get back to you.
11:40Okay.
11:41David's plans are ambitious for a homeowner, like really ambitious, like not possible.
11:48They're also really ambitious for a professional.
11:50I want to make sure that we're being realistic.
11:52So I have to go through everything that he's thought up and really dig in as to what we can actually do.
11:58I still need to iron out the budget, but having a big project like this in Utah to showcase my skills is too good an opportunity to pass up.
12:11So I've decided to take on this wreck.
12:13Brynn and David have cleared out and they're going on vacation.
12:16David will be stress free and away from the project.
12:19And I have a contractor.
12:21John, can you come let me in?
12:24It's locked.
12:25Hi.
12:26Hi. How are you?
12:27I'm good. How are you?
12:28This is my second project working with John as a general contractor.
12:31John and I have worked previously on a historic home.
12:34If I was going to work with him again, it had to be a project that felt challenging.
12:38And I think this is just that.
12:40It's going to be a lot.
12:42Yep.
12:43You have a smile.
12:44But it'll be fun.
12:46See?
12:47Based on the budget that David came up with, he thinks it's going to be $410,000 to do this renovation.
12:53I know that doesn't include everything.
12:55So I'm going to have to go through this budget and figure out where we're really going to be.
12:59Here's what I'm thinking for this space.
13:01You walk in the front door and the first thing that you see is this view because this wall comes down.
13:07The tray ceiling will go away.
13:09Really, the biggest part of this renovation is this back wall.
13:12And it will go wall to wall, floor to ceiling with glass that'll look out to this beautiful view.
13:18When you're doing this much glass, you have incredible engineering that will have to take place to get all the glass he's asking for.
13:26The design style for this house I'm calling moody eclectic.
13:31They don't want the house to feel dark, but they definitely want some darker features in the home.
13:36And then eclectic.
13:37Just meeting Brynn and David, eclectic is the first word that comes to mind.
13:41This fireplace is going to become the focal point of the room.
13:44So the fireplace is getting a complete makeover with a dark polished lava rock facade linked by custom walnut storage on either side.
13:51David wants an office and will create one near the entry with more custom cabinetry to display David's fossils and his geodes.
13:58His desk is going to face new French pocket doors so he can enjoy the spectacular view.
14:03I guess my next question is these floors.
14:07Is there any way that we can save these?
14:09I mean, knowing that we don't have the same flooring in the kitchen.
14:12In order to get everything to kind of flow, you're looking about $27,000 for a nice engineered floor.
14:18He didn't have anything for flooring in his budget.
14:21Yeah, I don't think he did.
14:22He's done a lot of work in this area, right?
14:25Can we use any of this?
14:26Some of the electrical needs to be changed.
14:29Some of it is commercial.
14:31Some of it's residential.
14:33An inspector will not pass the electrical the way it is.
14:36You've got too much mixed stuff in here.
14:39Okay, so new electrical, and we'll run new engineered hardwood from the front door right through to Bryn's brand new kitchen.
14:46We're talking sleek walnut cabinets, quartzite countertops with a panel-ready fridge, and a wet bar on one side with a built-in hutch on the opposite side.
14:53We'll keep the moody vibe going with a dark backsplash that pulls everything together,
14:58and the centerpiece, a massive island with a range on one end and plenty of seating on the other.
15:03All right, do we talk about the elephant in the room or out of the room?
15:06You mean the deck that every time they go out the door it hurts?
15:10This is really dangerous.
15:11Mm-hmm.
15:12So if we can start the deck all the way at the corner of the house and run it all the way to the other corner of the house, that's what they really want.
15:19But is that even possible?
15:21What we're going to have to do is structurally make it more sound and extend those posts up, put a nice platform on top, and that's a lot of work.
15:32He has $82,000 in the budget for this deck.
15:38No.
15:39David had $410,000 as his overall budget, but it sounds like we're not even close to that.
15:46We're about $560,000 budget-wise right now.
15:50So I think we need to call them and see what they say.
15:55Hi.
15:56Hello.
15:57His budget was pretty good, but it didn't include a contractor fee.
16:01It didn't include new flooring, and it didn't include a lot of the structural and what was going to be needed to actually complete the deck that he wants.
16:09It's going to be about $150,000 over the $410,000 that you had as your bottom line number on your budget.
16:17So $150,000 more than what I budgeted for, that's a lot of money.
16:22So Brynn is flying, so I can't get a hold of her.
16:26What we could get started, is that possibility, at the $410,000?
16:31The cost of the deck alone is $150,000.
16:35Obviously, we have to do the inside.
16:38So if you want us to get started inside and forego the deck, that would get you to your original budget number.
16:46Obviously, I want to get the house moving along.
16:50I can't make a decision of $150,000 without first talking to Brynn.
16:55But since she and I already discussed the $410,000, if you're on board and you're willing to do this, we are too.
17:03Let's get started.
17:04And in a couple days, I can talk to Brynn, and we can decide if we're going to go forward with the deck or wait for another season.
17:13Okay, well, just let us know.
17:15We're going to get rocking on the inside here, and we'll talk to you real soon.
17:19Good luck.
17:21Hopefully, we can do the deck, too.
17:23It needs it.
17:25You guys ready?
17:26Let's do this.
17:31David says that he's ready to hand this project over.
17:34And he's admitted that that's tough, but he also has done it.
17:39And we've set aside 14 weeks on this project.
17:42And that's longer than most of my project timelines, but there is so much to dig into here.
17:48I'd help you with that, but I just had back surgery.
17:51Did you really?
17:52So my brother Nephi is going to be doing the heavy lifting with you.
17:56John is overseeing this project from a general contractor standpoint, but Nephi, who is John's little brother, will be here managing the day-to-day.
18:06It actually makes quite a big difference.
18:08Yeah, it does.
18:09Just a little spot.
18:10Here, did you break into the seating?
18:11Yeah.
18:12Let's do it.
18:13Hopefully, this isn't structural, right?
18:15Hopefully, it's just cosmetic, and we can just take it out.
18:19It's not a big deal.
18:20Double sheetrock.
18:21I thought you were just weak.
18:24Just kidding.
18:27John told me that 90% of the tray ceilings he sees are cosmetic.
18:34That's a bearing member.
18:35Yes, it is.
18:36And of course, we're in that 10%.
18:38And yes, this is structural.
18:40That's the actual roof on the outside.
18:43Yeah.
18:44So we're in a bit of a pickle here.
18:46I mean, the goal was to modernize this and to square off the ceiling and get rid of that angle.
18:53There's nowhere to even go higher if I wanted to.
18:56This right here cannot go up because that is structure.
19:00You'd have to raise the entire roof.
19:02Oh, man.
19:04Oh, that's frustrating because we have to change it.
19:07We have to do something to it.
19:09I think this room would look better if these were made kind of a coffered ceiling in here.
19:14That might be cool.
19:15And square it off so it's framed like this and then goes straight up.
19:18I like that idea.
19:19I think they're going to be stoked that the angle is gone.
19:22I think it'll be a great look.
19:24David?
19:25I came to get my fans?
19:43There's no way that's true.
19:47I'm very surprised to see David here today.
19:51I thought he was gone.
19:53All right.
19:54I just wanted to see what was going on.
19:55And it's awesome to be able to see my home opened up the way I've envisioned it for years.
20:00All right. Come here. Come here.
20:01All right. Thank you.
20:02You should have come through the front door.
20:05Yes.
20:06Because you would have seen that.
20:09It's awesome.
20:10That's it.
20:11I just couldn't stay away.
20:12I had to see it.
20:13So I'm sorry.
20:14Please forgive me.
20:15What are you thinking about the deck?
20:18Well, I did just talk to Brynn and we want to go forward.
20:24Really?
20:25I don't want to wait another year and go through construction again.
20:29We're going to do it now.
20:30Okay.
20:31I'm excited because I agree.
20:33If we do it all at the same time, it's actually going to cost less overall than trying to do it in phases as well.
20:38It makes sense.
20:39All right.
20:40The budget for this project at $560,000 means that this is one of the biggest budget wrecks I've ever taken on for a client.
20:48How do you feel walking in here?
20:49So what you've done in three hours would be two weeks for me.
20:52Yeah.
20:53But I am a bit bummed.
20:55I mean, I want to be doing this.
20:56I want to be part of the crew.
20:58I want to be getting my hands dirty.
21:00I don't want you to get hurt.
21:01I don't want to get hurt.
21:02I know.
21:03And I'm sure it's hard to walk away.
21:05Yeah.
21:06Yeah.
21:07But you're here now, so you can grab your fans.
21:11Maybe I'll just drag it out so I can stay longer.
21:14I see that happening.
21:17I have worked with a lot of people like David over the years, and it's hard for him to let go.
21:23This is his baby.
21:25It's what he loves to do.
21:26It's his house.
21:27It's his project.
21:28It's his...
21:29It's how he fills his days right now.
21:32I've gotten the information that I need out of him, the help that I need out of him, and I need him to just let us do our thing now.
21:43I need him to trust me.
21:45This project is coming along.
21:58Okay, so our framing in the entry is done.
22:01The view is here.
22:03This is what it's all about.
22:04The electricians are here.
22:05All of our cans are going in.
22:07This ceiling, it's not at an angle anymore.
22:10It's squared off.
22:11Nephi is over here welding the posts that have to hold up this entire exterior wall.
22:17Woo!
22:19A lot going on.
22:25Hello.
22:26How's it going?
22:27Getting ready to leave tomorrow to go to Portugal and enjoying ourselves.
22:31Okay, so I've sent you a box, and what I want to do is go through some of the elements of your design, the big ones.
22:40So I've got the same thing here.
22:41We've got a white oak, wide plank, engineered hardwood floor.
22:45Love it.
22:46Okay, so let's build our design off of that.
22:48So this piece of walnut, this is what I'm proposing for your kitchen cabinetry.
22:54And I love walnut.
22:55I do too.
22:56That's really nice.
22:57The tile that you have there, that is the backsplash that I'm proposing.
23:03This is a handcrafted ceramic tile.
23:06It has some variation in it.
23:07Oh!
23:08That would be nice.
23:09Yeah.
23:10Yeah.
23:11It's all going to equal this moody, eclectic vibe.
23:14And that's what Brynn and David want.
23:16They don't want a kitchen where you walk in, and it feels like everybody else's kitchen.
23:20If you're comfortable, I'm comfortable with it.
23:22You sure?
23:23Yeah.
23:24Yeah.
23:25I trust you on this.
23:26I guess I'm getting more comfortable with releasing that piece of control.
23:31Let it go.
23:34See you soon.
23:39This deck project is massive.
23:41So before we even start building the deck, there's a lot of prep work.
23:44We had to put all new footings in.
23:47There's also a ton of steel.
23:49Like the amount of steel that's going to go into this deck, it feels like we're building
23:53a skyscraper.
23:54Oh my gosh, I can see the crane.
23:57I'm only halfway up the hill.
24:00So we're adding a steel frame, and this is going to function not only as the structure
24:05for the deck, but as a sunshade as well.
24:08If you didn't know that I was in town before, I think a giant crane on top of the hill overlooking
24:14the whole city is a good way to say, hey, I'm here.
24:18I'm doing big things.
24:20Hi.
24:21This is wild.
24:23Oh my gosh.
24:25Not much gets me rattled, but a crane is always a little bit of a day where I'm like
24:31on edge a bit.
24:32It's a lot of money on the line and a lot of lives on the line today, so we should be all
24:36set.
24:38So this frame is going to go over the house, and it has to land on the post in the backyard.
24:46Four posts.
24:47This is wild.
24:49We have 2,400 pounds up above the house.
24:52We have no room for error.
24:55We're at 5,200 feet of elevation here.
24:59The winds, when they kick up, are very dangerous.
25:03We're not in the clear yet.
25:06What do you got?
25:07Table down a little.
25:09Just a touch.
25:11Nephi says he's confident.
25:13I just hope it's not false confidence.
25:15Nephi, you got it?
25:20Nobody beyond your feet.
25:21A little bit more.
25:23Good.
25:24Woo!
25:25It's in!
25:26It's up!
25:27Nice!
25:28You feel good?
25:29Oh, yeah.
25:30It's over the house, and it's on the poles, so we're good.
25:31Oh, man.
25:32Nicely done.
25:33Woo!
25:34Everything is securely fastened and welded into the frame, and this is going to be the structure
25:48that holds the roof that holds the roof that's going to be above the deck.
25:55This is the biggest project I've taken on in Utah thus far.
26:00This is one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Salt Lake City.
26:03These are the types of projects where I can really shine.
26:07So, to get more of these projects, I have to get this one right.
26:11There's no room for error.
26:12The stakes have never been higher.
26:14Like, this could make or break my business.
26:16All the progress that I've made leave kind of all hinges on this project.
26:24This is half of the windows.
26:25There's so many that have to go in.
26:28They're 300 pounds each.
26:30These windows are an extra $100,000 that David already paid for outside of our budget.
26:36These custom windows had a 13-week lead time.
26:40And so, if for some reason these windows don't fit, we don't have time to order another set of windows.
26:47Not quite.
26:49It's nerve-wracking because if I'm not involved in the ordering, the chances of it fitting in the design that now I'm in charge of are less.
26:58Well, that's not going in.
27:01That looks like we need about an inch more.
27:05We'll have to cut that two by six and pull those two pieces of plywood out.
27:09Is this something that we can do and still get this window in today?
27:12I think we can make it happen.
27:14Let's do it.
27:15So, the size isn't wrong.
27:17We just have to tweak the opening a little bit, and it's going to fit.
27:21We're in.
27:22Yes!
27:23Good work, guys.
27:24Just the amount of structural work that's gone into making these windows a reality.
27:30We're really only gaining six inches of glass.
27:33I'd like to say I don't think it's worth it, but I do.
27:36I think that having the back of this house just glass is something that David's never going to regret.
27:42But, yeah, it's a lot of work.
27:44And that slides.
27:45Real nice.
27:46Watch your fingers.
27:47I've got to test this.
27:48Here we are driving in South Carolina, a little bit different than Portugal, where we just got back from.
28:09We got David, and we got Sir Watson.
28:12Thinking about the house at all?
28:14Yeah.
28:15Yeah?
28:16Thinking about how nice it is that I'm not stressing over the different stages.
28:20How's it going?
28:21Good.
28:22How are you?
28:23You guys made it up the hill.
28:24Barely.
28:25A lot of weight in that thing.
28:27Room office this way.
28:29Oh, my gosh.
28:30This looks good.
28:31You can see the floors are in.
28:32The fireplace is framed.
28:34He's got this roof structure that's way up there.
28:36So you don't have anything in the way of your view except for Nephi.
28:40That is the view.
28:41Hi, Nephi.
28:42This is the view.
28:43This is epic.
28:44I mean, what a difference.
28:46It took us seven weeks to get to this stage.
28:49Look at these cabinets.
28:50Woo!
28:51They look great.
28:52I feel like the walnut gives that, like, rich depth that, you know, a lot of other cabinetry wouldn't be delivering.
29:00Right.
29:01And that's what Brynn especially is looking for in this kitchen.
29:03Yeah, snuggly.
29:04I call it snuggling.
29:05Snuggling.
29:06I love that.
29:07Yeah, these are snuggly cabinets.
29:08These cabinets give that richness.
29:10They give that depth, that warm color that are really going to feel luxurious, that are
29:16going to be timeless, that are going to last.
29:19That's been a big part of the design for this kitchen and really for this whole project.
29:24With only two weeks to go, things are moving.
29:35I tried to lean into David's love of geology with a lava rock tile on the fireplace.
29:40In David's office, the custom shelves are almost all in.
29:43By the way, Brynn's kitchen, the mini bar, is almost ready for cocktails.
29:48And then the island is in place and ready for a massive quartzite countertop.
29:56Wow.
29:57Look how big it is.
29:58It's just a half.
29:59Of course.
30:03This island is massive.
30:05It's 12 feet by 6 feet, cut out of a mountain in Brazil.
30:09It's quartzite.
30:10It's durable.
30:11It's beautiful.
30:12It's everything that this kitchen was not before.
30:15Oh, my gosh.
30:17Look at that vein.
30:18Brynn is going to lose her mind when she sees this.
30:21The veining in this island is bold.
30:24And that's what Brynn and David wanted.
30:25They were like, she's like, the last thing I want is something that's boring.
30:29Having a dark backsplash in the kitchen.
30:31Again, something that most people would probably shy away from, but they're on board.
30:35Lava rock, they're obsessed with that.
30:37And I'm obsessed with that.
30:38I've never used this material.
30:52Nice.
30:54Okay.
30:55Whoa!
30:56My bike can work.
30:57Whoa!
30:58Go.
30:59I did it, Mommy!
31:01You want to go towards the playground?
31:02Yeah.
31:03Brynn and David's house is almost done.
31:05We've got our kitchen being finished.
31:07The glass pocket doors are going in in the office.
31:09We've got lights going in.
31:11So it's nice to have a little bit of time.
31:14We're enjoying our summer.
31:15We've got Mom's bike camp going, right?
31:18That's where you park.
31:19You want to play in the playground?
31:20Yeah.
31:22Uh-oh.
31:23Hold on one sec, Hayes.
31:25I'm gonna take a call.
31:26Hi, Nephi.
31:27How's it going?
31:28Could be better.
31:29Uh-oh.
31:30I don't like the sound of that.
31:32What's going on?
31:33The decking material still hasn't shown up.
31:37Last thing we've heard so far from the lumber yard is that it's still stuck at the port.
31:42This is the flooring of the deck, right?
31:44Correct.
31:45Oh, man.
31:46So do you have, like, a definite tracking date on it?
31:50No, not until it clears the port.
31:53I'm concerned that we're not gonna be able to deliver this project on time.
31:57And I did ask David to trust me.
32:01And I asked Brynn to move out, which is a big deal.
32:05So, Brynn, are you thinking about the house?
32:07Yeah.
32:08And what are you thinking?
32:09How pretty it's gonna be.
32:11So I would feel bad for both of them if I had to ask for them to give me more time.
32:17I have to get this done.
32:18Jasmine, can't wait to see the house.
32:20But to be there soon.
32:31Oh, nice.
32:32We got the deck boards.
32:34Woo!
32:35This is a lot of wood.
32:36Hi, Nephi.
32:37Hi, Nephi.
32:38Hey, Jasmine.
32:40I heard rumor of this decking material being here, but the rumor's true.
32:45Rumor is true.
32:46Finally.
32:47Okay, so this is the flooring of the deck, right?
32:49Correct.
32:50I thought that it was gonna be here, what, like, five-plus days ago, right?
32:54Like, a week ago.
32:55It should have been five days ago.
32:56What happened?
32:57The container that this was on actually got confiscated to be searched.
33:00Wow.
33:01Obviously, the timeline, we're right up against our Friday deadline.
33:05The question is, is if it's gonna be done, huh?
33:08Yeah.
33:09Yes, it will.
33:10Okay.
33:11I would offer to help you with this deck, but I feel like I'm just gonna get in the way.
33:14Honestly.
33:15Yeah.
33:16See?
33:17Oh, it feels good in here!
33:30Look at this deck!
33:31Oh, my gosh!
33:32Wow!
33:33And it's so solid!
33:34Really, this is a whole nother living space.
33:38It's 740 square feet.
33:39That's huge.
33:40We just doubled the size of this living space.
33:43Nephi did a stellar job on this deck.
33:46This was a huge undertaking, and as of three days ago, I was pretty sure we were gonna have
33:51to call David and Brynn and tell them we needed more time.
33:54And now it's done.
33:56All this natural light coming in, it allows us to be moodier in our design.
34:01And that's fun, too, because we don't have to worry about this ever becoming dark in here.
34:05It is bright.
34:06It will always be bright.
34:08They've got all their can lights in.
34:09We've got our light fixtures.
34:11Like, how fun are these?
34:13I can't say I've done a moody, eclectic mountain design before.
34:18Their house is one of a kind, and they're one of a kind, and their design style is definitely
34:24something new for me.
34:25You've got all the geodes.
34:26These are David's prized possessions.
34:28It's gonna be like a museum in here.
34:30Oh, my gosh!
34:31That's so beautiful!
34:32Look at that!
34:33That really is beautiful.
34:35These are real different than the rocks my child brings me.
34:38Brynn and David needed a house that wasn't under construction.
34:46They needed a house where they could entertain and host their family and live their day-to-day
34:52routines and schedules and not have to worry about working on the house.
34:57David's back doesn't allow him to work on the house anymore.
35:00And so, really, their only option was to call and ask for help.
35:04David and Brynn, they had really high expectations for this project and for this house, and they
35:10had a vision.
35:11And so, my interpretation of that vision, I just hope it's what they wanted and what
35:17they were expecting.
35:18I don't know.
35:19I guess only time will tell.
35:25Hi!
35:26Hello!
35:27Nice to see you!
35:28We need all the hugs we can get, right?
35:30I know, right?
35:31Oh, my goodness!
35:33Welcome home!
35:34Yay!
35:35Thank you!
35:36It's been 14 weeks.
35:37Yeah.
35:38Which is a long time.
35:39Big budget project.
35:40I mean, I don't need to tell you that.
35:42Yes.
35:43But I had $560,000 is what you gave me to work with.
35:47Right.
35:48But of the $560,000, we are on budget.
35:52But I spent every penny.
35:53Okay.
35:54I didn't expect to get money back.
35:56No.
35:57When you handed this project over, I know that was a challenge.
36:00Like, for you, personally, that was hard, right?
36:02Right.
36:03Yes.
36:04And the goal was to not only give your back a break, but to give you a break, right?
36:09It was a big project.
36:10Big project.
36:11Mm-hmm.
36:12And I move slow now.
36:13All right, do you want to see inside?
36:14Yes.
36:15Oh, yes.
36:16Yeah?
36:17Yeah.
36:18All right, I'm going to follow you.
36:19Go ahead.
36:20Oh, we're going?
36:21Yeah?
36:22Okay.
36:23Let's see it.
36:24Wow!
36:25Look at that.
36:26The wall!
36:27Look at this.
36:28This is spectacular.
36:32I think I'm going to cry.
36:35I made a little cherry.
36:36Oh, it's spectacular.
36:37Wow, that's so much better.
36:40It doesn't look like a 1968 home anymore.
36:43Well, there was a wall.
36:44Where we were standing, right?
36:45Oh, it's amazing.
36:48The house doesn't end.
36:49It just continues on.
36:51Yeah.
36:52Into infinity.
36:53It's a whole different house.
36:55It was your idea to get rid of the header.
36:57Yeah.
36:58It was six inches, which in the big scheme of things, most people, I think, would be like,
37:02just leave it.
37:03It's fine, whatever.
37:04What a difference.
37:05What a difference.
37:06Okay, so what do you think of the floor?
37:08This looks so much better.
37:09It makes a huge difference.
37:10The parquet was nice, but it never would have looked as modern and consistent as this does.
37:16Yeah.
37:17And this room, you had a bunch of different furniture in here.
37:20Oh, everything.
37:21A lot going on.
37:22Wow.
37:23Look how nice the fireplace looks.
37:24That's beautiful.
37:25Is that lava rock on the fireplace?
37:28It is.
37:29Oh, my goodness.
37:30Yes.
37:31He's a rock man.
37:33This is a sliced lava rock.
37:35Nice.
37:36You did that for me.
37:37You knew I'd appreciate that.
37:39It's so nice.
37:40This mantle.
37:41Ugh.
37:42It's beautiful.
37:43It's beautiful.
37:44And the walnut ties in throughout the entire design.
37:46Yeah.
37:47And I love walnut.
37:48This is great.
37:49You know I love rocks.
37:50It's a good choice.
37:51What about the ceilings?
37:52Yeah.
37:53So much better.
37:54I mean, the old ceiling in here had these diagonals that looked dated and they didn't serve
38:00a function.
38:01And there was no light in here.
38:02No light.
38:03Now it seems to have a function.
38:04Yeah.
38:05There was a recess cove there for lighting.
38:07Now you have a proper living room.
38:09Somewhere you can entertain.
38:10Somewhere you can just hang out.
38:12And it connects to the rest of the spaces.
38:14Let's go in the dining room.
38:16So there was a wall here.
38:17Yes.
38:18This was closed off.
38:19Yes.
38:20Now it's wide open.
38:21Great.
38:22This was your plan.
38:23Just had to be, actually, it had to happen.
38:26I mean, there were two by fours here.
38:28This whole area was really, in my opinion, a mess.
38:31It was a mess.
38:32Oh, I did this when she was on a trip in London.
38:34Tore out another wall and freaked her out a little bit more.
38:37You did.
38:38Not anymore.
38:39Not anymore.
38:40That's right.
38:41I got nothing else to work on in here.
38:43We're saving your back.
38:44Yes.
38:45This is the whole thing, remember?
38:46That's right.
38:47I could get new hobbies.
38:49Can I go in the kitchen?
38:50Of course.
38:51Yes.
38:52Let's do it.
38:53Cool.
38:54That is amazing.
38:55Brynn, this is your kitchen.
38:56Mine.
38:57I love it.
38:58This is amazing.
38:59Yeah, you have this, like, deep vein.
39:00Give it some life.
39:01I love it.
39:02And did you guys see this?
39:03Oh, look how nice.
39:04Yeah.
39:05That ties in the two areas.
39:06Ties everything together.
39:07Very nice.
39:08It's beautiful.
39:09Yeah.
39:10It's beautiful.
39:11Yeah.
39:12Oh, you're crying again.
39:13I know, I can't.
39:14Yes, because it was so janky before.
39:15It was awful.
39:16It wasn't awful.
39:17But it wasn't like this.
39:18This is like, I've never had a kitchen like this.
39:20Yeah.
39:21It's nice.
39:22It is nice.
39:23It's a lot to take in.
39:24I didn't expect it to be this beautiful.
39:26But it wasn't like this.
39:27This is like, I've never had a kitchen like this.
39:29Yeah.
39:30It's so nice.
39:31It is nice.
39:32It's a lot to take in.
39:33And I didn't expect it to be this beautiful.
39:36It's so pretty.
39:37And it's, I mean, it's a lot of work.
39:39Y'all did a lot of work in here.
39:41This was probably one of my biggest design challenges,
39:43was figuring this out.
39:44And now it's timeless.
39:45It's unique.
39:46It's beautiful.
39:47You have the bold, dark colors.
39:48You have the island that has this beautiful veining on it.
39:51This is a one-of-a-kind kitchen.
39:52I've never designed a kitchen like this before.
39:53Wow.
39:54Oh, there's beer.
39:55Oh, there's beer.
39:56Oh, there's beer.
39:57Oh, there's beer.
39:58Oh, there's beer.
39:59Oh, there's beer.
40:00Oh, there's beer.
40:01Oh, there's beer.
40:02Oh, there's beer.
40:03Oh, there's beer.
40:05Oh, there's beer.
40:06Oh, there's beer.
40:07Now that's a refrigerator.
40:08Now that I come home, I can kick off my work shoes
40:12and get to my happy place, my kitchen.
40:15You'll never have to take me out again.
40:17You heard it here.
40:18Maybe.
40:20I'm dying to go out there.
40:22May we?
40:23Yes.
40:24Yeah, let's go outside.
40:25Wow.
40:26Holy .
40:27Oh, my God.
40:28Stop.
40:29Look at this thing.
40:33I always wanted a big deck.
40:34Wait, four people.
40:35Oh, my God.
40:36This is what you could have out here before.
40:37Do you remember?
40:38Four people.
40:39Now we could entertain out here.
40:41And it goes all the way around the house.
40:43I've never been in the cockpit of a plane, but I feel like this is...
40:46This is the view from the cockpit.
40:48This feels like a room to me.
40:50Yeah.
40:51Like another, I mean, a legit extension of your house.
40:54This overhang is not in the view.
40:56It is not.
40:57From inside, you don't even know that any of this structure exists.
41:00No.
41:01No.
41:02And then you come out here, and you're like, oh, wow.
41:03Like, to put that above the roof line, that was the only way to do it.
41:08It's amazing.
41:09We really like to be outside, and this is gonna be used a lot.
41:13One more room, though, Brynn.
41:15My office.
41:16Dun, dun, dun.
41:17Are you ready?
41:18Yeah, I'm ready.
41:19All right.
41:20This house didn't have an office before.
41:21I know.
41:22Yeah.
41:23I still can't believe the space.
41:24Okay.
41:25Oh, yes.
41:26Here we go.
41:27Glass doors.
41:28They're beautiful.
41:29Wow.
41:30Man.
41:31Really nice.
41:32Right?
41:33Perfect.
41:34Yeah.
41:35Perfect.
41:36Look at these.
41:37Look at those.
41:38Oh, my treasures.
41:39We went with, like, kind of a museum vibe in here.
41:40Yeah.
41:41That's kind of what we were going for.
41:42Pilots call these rooms the I love me room, because we adorn them with the stuff
41:46from our careers and places we've traveled.
41:49Yeah.
41:50There you go.
41:51You knocked it out of the park.
41:52It's perfect.
41:53Yeah.
41:54I had a vision of how I wanted the house to look, and I'd say Jasmine executed it exactly
41:59how my vision was.
42:01So what have you learned in this process?
42:04Maybe this home renovation hobby of mine.
42:07Maybe I've evolved now.
42:08Maybe I'm more of the idea guy now rather than doing it.
42:12And that's fine, too.
42:14Can't wait to live in it.
42:15Yeah.
42:16Me, too.
42:17Can I have the keys?
42:18I think this renovation proves that, you know, I can work with clients who have big ideas.
42:23And that's why I came to Utah.
42:25That's why I continue to do projects, because I like the challenge.
42:29So, yeah, I'm really proud of how this one turned out.
42:33To adorn our new house.
42:35Oh, my favorite thing.
42:36Flowers.
42:37A major construction project like this, with me doing a lot of it, it takes a lot of
42:44time.
42:45Now the house is done.
42:46Yeah.
42:47We can take more vacations, spend more time with the kids and the grandkids, and just
42:52Yeah.
42:53Enjoy life a little more.
42:54There you go.
42:55To our new home.
42:56You gotta do one of these.
42:57Oh.
42:58Oh, oh, oh.
42:59Don't spill it on me.
