00:00Traffic cops.
00:01Pull over in here now.
00:02Might be game on for some of it here.
00:04It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:07Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:10Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:14Driving head-on.
00:15He's up the kerb.
00:16Into danger.
00:17Just have a warning, Marcus, for firearms.
00:20Vehicle's done.
00:21Get out of the car.
00:23Wow, good.
00:24Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:26Don't pull away, fella.
00:27With rising crime rates.
00:31Officers are under pressure.
00:33Stop! Get out of here!
00:35You're doing it!
00:36Come out of here now!
00:37You're under arrest.
00:40Police!
00:41With lives on the line.
00:42We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:46Is it fuel?
00:47Right, move away from this car now!
00:49The stakes are high.
00:51It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:53But the traffic cops.
00:54We've blown 128, 11 minutes past two in the afternoon.
00:57You're under arrest.
00:58Conspicuous theft from motor vehicles.
01:00Get out of here!
01:01Do not run!
01:02Smack the officer!
01:04And there's a problem!
01:05All right.
01:10Coming up...
01:11Oi!
01:12We're not having you spitting, eh?
01:14Come on, man!
01:14Stop spitting!
01:16Drunk...
01:16This person driving along.
01:17No lights on.
01:18Hands out the window.
01:20Dangerous...
01:21Pull over!
01:22And disorderly...
01:23Get out of the car now!
01:24Officers tackle drivers under the influence.
01:28It didn't have to be like that, did it?
01:33And out of control.
01:35Oh, snap your wings, come on!
01:36No, you ain't slam me.
01:37I'm going to find out how people you are.
01:40And where you live.
01:41Don't make threats.
01:42Do you have any units that can start making their way to the town centre?
01:58Do you have any units that can start making their way, please?
02:00I've had a report of a car versus motorbike.
02:02I believe we do have one casualty.
02:03Suspect vehicles left seen.
02:06Vehicle details at this time are unknown.
02:08But if we've got any units that can start travelling...
02:10Traffic cop Rich Morris is responding to a crash involving a suspected drink driver.
02:18It's just been sighted by a member of the public.
02:21It's crashed into him and it's run a red light.
02:27Why is it hurting?
02:29Elbow and my wrist.
02:30Oh, and your wrist, OK.
02:32In Derby city centre, local officers find the biker involved in the crash.
02:37Did you see what happened?
02:38So I was stopping and I could see in my mirror.
02:41I saw, like, he was not going to stop.
02:43Because he hit me in the back and it, like, wobbled me.
02:45And I was kind of just, like, veered to the side.
02:48Right.
02:48And I just couldn't keep the balance on it.
02:50OK.
02:51The rider alleges a black Peugeot drove into the back of his motorbike whilst he was stopped at a red light.
02:57I take pictures as well.
02:59He is too much drinking.
03:01Yeah.
03:01This car, I take pictures of what he's safe.
03:04The witness's photo of the car gives police a number plate.
03:08He was really drunk, wasn't he?
03:10Did you speak to him?
03:11Yeah.
03:11Yeah.
03:12As soon as I rang the police, he backed off and got his car.
03:14He's not stopping.
03:15He argued.
03:15Any decent person would stop and be helping at the scene of a collision.
03:21And if somebody's just driving off, then why are they trying to hide?
03:25One of us could give you a lift to hospital.
03:27That would be amazing.
03:27Do you want to come and get him a colleague's car, then?
03:29They'll take you to hospital.
03:30Yeah.
03:36Do you want a hand?
03:36Do you want it to walk?
03:37Just give a little bit of a hand, please.
03:40With the biker on his way to get medical care, Rich and other units begin a search for the
03:47black Peugeot.
03:49A car in the wrong hands is a dangerous weapon.
03:52This guy's a potential drink driver.
03:54He's left the scene of a collision.
03:56What I don't want is him being involved in any more incidents.
04:00I mean, it's possibly going back to the home address.
04:04Yeah, 2-4.
04:06The Peugeot has hit police cameras close to its registered address.
04:10Is he going to go home?
04:11Probably.
04:12Whether he's actually got there.
04:19How many?
04:19Tango on zero.
04:20Dad?
04:22It's back at the hay chain.
04:25Yeah, it's parked up unattended.
04:30Other officers arrive for backup.
04:36That's the vehicle there.
04:38As a police officer, we never give good news out.
04:40You know, we're not telling anybody they won the lottery.
04:42And that in itself can send people up like a bottle of pot.
04:45But then you add alcohol into that factor as well.
04:47And they do become a nuisance, become aggressive and unpredictable.
04:53Stand by.
04:55It's about half a dozen houses in.
04:58I just rang the doorbell now.
05:05OK.
05:07That black Peugeot outside, who's that car?
05:12OK.
05:12Is he in?
05:15Can I come in and have a word?
05:16The woman says the car's her partner's and that he's inside the address.
05:21Right, where is he in bed?
05:23Has he said anything about being involved in an accident?
05:27Just to clarify, how long has he been in?
05:31Right, is he had anything to drink since he's come out?
05:34No alcohol.
05:36Is there any alcohol in the address?
05:39No empty bottles.
05:40As more officers arrive, the woman says there is no alcohol in the house.
05:47Hello, it's the police.
05:50Rich finds a man asleep in bed.
05:53OK, your car's suspected of being involved in an accident tonight.
05:58OK, what's going on?
06:02He's been involved in a collision with his motorbike.
06:05He's stated, oh, I've had a drink since I've come home.
06:07If you've had alcohol in this house, where's the alcohol?
06:11Where is it?
06:12Where's the empty bottle there?
06:13It's in the bin.
06:14What bin?
06:15OK, at the moment, you're under arrest.
06:18On suspicion of drink driving, OK?
06:20So I can breathalise you and establish if you are over the limit, OK?
06:25Get up.
06:27I'm not bothered breathalising him.
06:29I can smell intoxicants, his eyes are glazed,
06:31so I want to just get in to custody as soon as possible.
06:35Come on, you're a mess.
06:36Get up.
06:36You should be driving while you're drunk, should you?
06:38I have handcuffed him for my safety.
06:41I'm trying to get him out of bed.
06:43Come on.
06:43Let's go, fella.
06:44Come on.
06:45Get up.
06:47Get up.
06:47You're coming from me.
06:48Get up.
06:49Right, I have to...
06:50Get up now!
06:51Last chance to get up before I drag you out of that bed.
06:53Get up.
06:54Get up.
06:55Get up.
06:56What's wrong with you?
06:57You're not listening to me.
06:58No, but I'm listening to you.
07:01Get up then.
07:02He's not complying with what I'm asking,
07:04so I'm a bit more thoughtful,
07:06tell him I want him to get out of bed,
07:07and that's when things change.
07:11What's this door?
07:12Shut up.
07:13No.
07:13Get going.
07:14Well, where are you sharp?
07:15Don't tell me sharp.
07:16Chill out.
07:17Don't use that.
07:18Calm down, pal.
07:19Calm down.
07:20That's not normal.
07:21Calm down.
07:21Don't tell me sharp.
07:22Calm down.
07:23Shut up.
07:24You shut up.
07:25You sharp.
07:26Calm down.
07:27Don't tell me sharp.
07:28Hello.
07:28He just escalates then.
07:34Very unpredictable.
07:35Oh, no.
07:36I'm not going to hold down.
07:38Oi.
07:39We're not having you spitting.
07:41It's dirty.
07:42Stop spitting.
07:45We're not having anybody spitting at us.
07:47It's disgusting.
07:48That's an assault.
07:49We're not allowing that to happen.
07:51We will use preemptive force.
07:53Come walk with me.
07:54Be nice, man.
07:55Come on.
07:55Don't abuse me, yeah?
08:01Stand up.
08:02One zero.
08:04This male is becoming increasingly violent.
08:07Yeah, it's good.
08:07Yeah, it's good.
08:08Yeah, it's good.
08:08Don't abuse me, man.
08:11Don't abuse me.
08:12Don't abuse me.
08:15While officers take the suspect to custody,
08:20Rich looks for evidence.
08:22He's taken a proper dislike to me at this point,
08:24so I thought, you know what, I'll stay back.
08:26I'll search the bin and see if there are any alcohol containers in there.
08:33Yeah, there's no empty alcohol containers.
08:38I've looked through the bins and there's absolutely nothing.
08:42Right, this is the subject vehicle.
08:45Rich turns his attention to the suspect's car.
08:48You can see, I don't know how he's managed to get home, to be honest.
08:51It clearly, is it a curb there?
08:54You can see that, which is there.
08:55It's tinted the rim.
08:56That has now caused a puncture on this.
08:59He's also, he's got scuffs on here as a result of the collision with the motorbike.
09:04We can take paint samples from that.
09:07Inside the car, Rich finds more evidence.
09:14There is some empty vodka bottles.
09:19It's just a bit of a mess, isn't it?
09:22There comes a time where you've got to take responsibility for your actions.
09:25He's chose to go out and get drunk in his car tonight.
09:27We haven't made him do that.
09:29And he's angry with me.
09:30He should be angry with himself, really, not with me.
09:32Coming up...
09:34Oh, slap me, I wouldn't stop.
09:35No, you won't slap me at all.
09:37In custody, some shocking threats.
09:40I'm going to find out who you are and where you live.
09:43My vehicle failing to stop.
09:47And the cops spot a car...
09:49No lights on.
09:50Hands out the window.
09:52...putting lives at risk.
09:54Pull over, that way.
09:56She's got the message.
10:02Why is it hurting?
10:13Elbow and my wrist.
10:14Elbow and your wrist.
10:15Did you see what happened?
10:16He's too much drinking.
10:18In the city centre, a suspected hit-and-run crash has left a motorbike rider needing hospital treatment.
10:25Let's give a little bit of a hand, please.
10:27Traffic cop Rich Morris and other officers have tracked down a drunk man, believed to be the driver, at a nearby address.
10:36Oi! We're not having you spitting, yeah?
10:39It's dirty. Stop spitting.
10:42No, one, one, zero.
10:43This mail has become increasingly violent.
10:47With assaults on emergency workers on the rise,
10:50three-quarters of the UK's police officers have been hurt while dealing with people under the influence.
10:57Call on me.
11:06Come on, whoa!
11:07We're not steady on our feet.
11:08I'll give you a hand.
11:09How about that?
11:10All right.
11:10Let's go straight ahead.
11:12All right.
11:13Yes, mate.
11:13You got it?
11:14Yes.
11:14At police custody, Rich books the man in before breathalising him.
11:20Sarge, how are you?
11:22Good, thank you.
11:22I'm living the dream.
11:23The circumstances of the arrest are, there's information that this chap here was driving around earlier in his vehicle, potentially drunk.
11:31He's been involved in a road traffic collision in Derby, where it's collided with a motorbike,
11:35carried on driving, where he's then run a red traffic light, nearly caused another accident.
11:41So, we've then attended the home address, where the vehicle's parked outside, and he's, we've woke him up, where he's then said he's had a drink.
11:50So, he's been arrested on, let me finish when he's been arrested for being, let me finish.
11:57You finish it?
11:58When he's been arrested for being on through a drink.
12:00It's rude to interrupt.
12:01You're a bit rude, aren't you?
12:03You're a bit, don't shush me.
12:05Well, it's rude to interrupt.
12:05No.
12:06You took me to shut up when you arrested me.
12:08Yes, I did.
12:09I want to counteract that, yeah?
12:11This isn't the time for it.
12:13Time for it.
12:14There's got to be some time for it.
12:16Dealing with drunks or people that have had alcohol, you can see it escalating.
12:22You look at the body language, you look at the gesture, and you just know what's coming next.
12:28You know, lads, don't tell me shush, and don't tell me shut up.
12:33Why don't you tell me shut up?
12:35Answer it.
12:37Go on.
12:38Three, one.
12:40Get back over there.
12:42Don't push me.
12:44Don't push me.
12:44Oh, man, cough.
12:46Oh, man, cough.
12:47Relax.
12:48No.
12:49Oh, man, cough, bro.
12:51How could I affect him?
12:52If he's not capable of handing people out of my cough, how's it going to be some stuff?
12:58Three, one, I go.
12:59Go on.
13:01Go on.
13:01Establish whether the level of alcohol in his breath is above the prescribed limit.
13:06Custody officers have come out, and they've kind of surrounded him a bit, because he's become
13:11unpredictable again, and potentially violent.
13:13But you, mate, you're not worthy of dealing in public.
13:18I'll tell you that now.
13:19Yeah, look at me in my eyes.
13:21You're not worthy of it.
13:23I'll slap you out with this.
13:24One ten.
13:24One ten.
13:25I'll slap you out with this cup.
13:26No, you won't slap me.
13:27Just slap me out.
13:28No, you won't.
13:29Who the f*** are you?
13:30Tell me, shut up.
13:32Wait up.
13:33Bro, I'm going to find out who you are, and where you live.
13:37Don't make threats.
13:38The cops are going behind you.
13:39That's all right.
13:40No problem.
13:41No, put my lock up.
13:42Put my lock down.
13:43It's all right.
13:44You can stand to talk to us.
13:45He's just like this at me all the time.
13:48Tell him to go away.
13:49Tell him to go away.
13:50Sorry, I'm sorry.
13:51You're being brave.
13:52You're not this thing.
13:52Bro, tell him to go away.
13:55Tell that man to go away.
13:57Tell that guy to go away.
13:59Tell that guy to go away before I'm saying any questions.
14:03He needs to go.
14:04Yeah, just because you wear a police uniform, does that really mean you're subjected to
14:09that?
14:09I don't think so.
14:10I'm British, yeah?
14:12British.
14:13You understand me?
14:15You understand?
14:16I'm British.
14:17Don't.
14:18No, I will do all of it.
14:21Get your hands on me.
14:22I'm British.
14:25Stop being a pig.
14:26No.
14:26Stop tensing up.
14:28I will tensing up.
14:28Stop tensing up.
14:29I will tensing up.
14:30Stop tensing up.
14:31Why?
14:31Relax yourself.
14:32I'll relax myself when you relax yourself.
14:35Still got the handcuffs on, but even in handcuffs, somebody can be unpredictable and violent,
14:39and he was.
14:41Do you agree to provide two specimens of press for analysis?
14:44No, I don't.
14:46I warn you again that for you to provide...
14:48I warn you as well.
14:49Let me finish.
14:51Let me finish.
14:53I warn you again that for you to provide either of these specimens will render you liable
14:57to prosecution.
14:58Do you now agree to provide two specimens of press for analysis?
15:01I'm not providing any specimens.
15:04Are there any medical or other reasons why you cannot or should not provide two specimens
15:09of breath?
15:09No, I don't know.
15:12I'm not a doctor.
15:15Unless you've got a nurse or anyone who can buy that information and let me know.
15:21But I can't say that.
15:24In the sun.
15:26Or is that too hard to grasp?
15:27That's it.
15:29That's it.
15:29Straight up, failed to provide.
15:30He's having the opportunity.
15:32Follow us this way, please.
15:33Don't smile.
15:34Don't smile at me.
15:35Let's go this way.
15:36Because you know you never know when I'm going to be able to help you.
15:41You never know.
15:42Come on this way.
15:43Yeah, you'll be...
15:44You know what?
15:45You'll laugh, man.
15:46No.
15:46We can't force somebody to give us a breath sample.
15:53We can request it.
15:54We can't force it.
15:55Your tracksuit bottoms needs to swap labels for us.
15:58We'll put them in these tracksuit bottoms.
16:00He's going to need an interview because he's not being seen driving.
16:04But he ain't going to be fit till morning anyway, is he?
16:06And I'm certainly not interviewing him anyway.
16:08It's a straight-up offence and a failure to provide a sample of breath.
16:15Somebody can pick that up in the morning, interview him, and they've got enough evidence
16:19and information there to look at charging him with leaving the scene of an accident
16:23and failure to provide a sample of breath.
16:27Hello.
16:27Where was you while I was getting abused?
16:29Behind you.
16:30I was, yeah?
16:31Yeah.
16:31When I first started this job, the abuse that you sometimes get, it was difficult to handle.
16:35When you put the uniform on, people expect you to be Superman or whatever.
16:40It's like, but we're not.
16:41We're just normal people at the end of the day.
16:43However, it does bounce off you a bit more.
16:50Please, can somebody let me out?
17:05Less than 10% of UK license holders are under 25 years old, but they account for a quarter
17:22of drink-drive casualties.
17:24And it's up to traffic cops like Matt Cork to catch them before they become another statistic.
17:38I can only hazard a guess that the reason that people drink drive is they genuinely
17:41believe that they're never going to get caught.
17:44Why should they sort out taxis, sort out alternative travel plans to somebody thinking, well, you
17:50know, I've had two pints and I think I'll be all right.
17:53The hard and fast rule is if you're driving, don't bother drinking.
17:57Simple as.
17:59As Matt patrols Chesterfield town centre, a car catches his attention.
18:05I've got this person driving along, no lights on, hands out the window.
18:15The car overtakes on a blind bend.
18:22Matt signals to the driver to pull over.
18:26Hey, target 2A.
18:29But they don't respond.
18:32I've got a vehicle failing stop, Chesterfield town at the moment.
18:35Whereabouts, Corky way, Chesterfield?
18:40It's called Bastard.
18:41Steakhouse, stand by.
18:43With concerns the driver is trying to make off, traffic cop Craig Dawes races to assist.
18:49Corky, we're above you if it's coming on your off-site galleon.
18:57Yeah, 3, 2.
18:59Corky, we're above you.
19:00Pull over.
19:01That way.
19:04Stand by.
19:05I've made contact with the driver.
19:08Corky, you've been on downhill.
19:10Up hill.
19:12Female driver.
19:18She's got the message.
19:22What about saying that, Corky?
19:24Must part.
19:25I take it you didn't realise lights and sirens meant to stop?
19:37No, I did.
19:37I was trying to find out the safe space.
19:39Right, okay.
19:40The reason I've stopped you, one, got no lights on.
19:44Yeah, that'd help.
19:46Two, what was that overtake all about on that taxi?
19:48Silliness, wasn't it?
19:52Yeah, with passengers hanging out the window as well.
19:55So, if you want to jump out, I'm going to do some checks with you.
19:58All right.
20:00Craig arrives as backup.
20:03Grand.
20:04I take it it's your car, is it?
20:05Yes.
20:06Lovely.
20:07Bola made up.
20:08The driver is just 18 years old.
20:12Jump in there for me.
20:14Can I just give you a VRM?
20:16Yes, yes.
20:18Inside her car are two male friends.
20:22Receive or eat.
20:23How are you?
20:24I'm all right, are you?
20:26Good, good, good.
20:27Where have you been tonight, then?
20:28What's made us not stop, or...?
20:29I'm not driving, though.
20:31I know you're not.
20:31I know you're not driving.
20:33Right.
20:33Have you had a drink tonight?
20:35I have, yeah.
20:37Due to the manner you're driving,
20:38I'm going to make a requirement of you to provide me with a sample of breath for analysis, okay?
20:42I have to warn you, it's a fair way to do so.
20:44May or any of your libel to prosecution, all right?
20:46Are you happy to give me a sample of breath?
20:48Yeah, thank you.
20:49Lovely.
20:50Okey-doke.
20:51Deep breath in?
20:51Yeah.
20:52Blow through it.
20:54When it comes to drink, you'll often get those little signs,
20:58before they've even provided a sample,
21:00that they're going to be over.
21:01When they go, oh, no, I'm sure I'll be fine.
21:04I've only had two pints.
21:06I've only had two pints.
21:08And you're already looking at them.
21:10You can smell the beer on them.
21:11Super.
21:13The way that their eyelids are sort of almost starting to droop,
21:15you know that they're going to blow over straight away.
21:18And a lot of the times, with the people that blow high numbers,
21:20you just kind of think, what on earth were you thinking
21:23when you turn the keys in that ignition?
21:26Legal limit's 35.
21:27Okay.
21:29You're blown to 77.
21:31So you're more than double?
21:33Yep.
21:33You're more than double limit.
21:34All right.
21:35So at 22.59, you're under arrest on suspicion of drink driving.
21:43Coming up...
21:43We're going to be going out to the police station now.
21:45The young female driver...
21:48Can I have my mum up?
21:49...faces up to her potentially life-changing decision.
21:53She's looking at a driving disqualification,
21:55which will have a real impact on the start of her life.
21:58Have you had anything to drink tonight?
22:00I've had about four cans of stalders.
22:02And another suspected drink driver...
22:05Get out the car now!
22:07...causing trouble.
22:08It didn't have to be like that, did it?
22:27I've got a vehicle failing stop.
22:29In Chesterfield.
22:30No lights on.
22:31Hands out the window.
22:33Pull over.
22:34That way.
22:36She's got the message.
22:37Traffic cop Matt Cork has pulled over an 18-year-old driver.
22:42Jump in there for me.
22:44You're blown to 77.
22:46So you're more than double...
22:47Yep.
22:48You're more than double limit.
22:49All right.
22:50So at 22.59, you're under arrest on suspicion of drink driving.
22:55So we're going to be going out to the police station now.
22:58When we get down there,
23:00you can have somebody informed that you've been arrested.
23:01Do you need a purse or anything like that out of your car?
23:04Yeah.
23:05OK.
23:05Yeah, we will sort that out.
23:07Right.
23:08My colleague's going to park it up somewhere where it's not going to impede these buses.
23:11Your passengers will be walking.
23:14So...
23:14Can I speak to him at least?
23:17No.
23:17Not at the moment, because you're under arrest.
23:19All right.
23:21Chuck has your key, Doc.
23:22All we need is car key.
23:24What's going to happen tomorrow?
23:29Tomorrow, you'll be charged with drink driving.
23:31You'll end up going to court,
23:32and they're going to take your driving licence off you.
23:35All right.
23:36But we'll get to that when we come to it.
23:37Still going to get an evidential sample from you.
23:39All right.
23:40We'll see what that comes back as.
23:41You're going to have to make your own way.
23:47She's been arrested.
23:48All right.
23:49Food is going out.
23:50Yeah, you wouldn't have wanted or anything, so...
23:53Mates aren't too bothered.
23:57They're probably thinking how they're going to go.
23:59They're not going to be bothered.
24:00They're getting a free lift home, aren't they?
24:02Fortunately, she's not nipping home now.
24:04She's nipping off to custody.
24:04Probably going to lose her licence.
24:06Maybe a job.
24:08You know, the joys of drink driving.
24:13The minimum punishment for a first-time drink-driving offence
24:16is a 12-month ban and a fine of up to £5,000.
24:24Some drivers face six months in prison,
24:27and all will have a criminal record.
24:31Dealing with the amount of drink drives that we do,
24:34the way that people behave,
24:35every now and again you'll get somebody
24:36who still doesn't think they've done anything wrong.
24:39And to be honest, it's infuriating.
24:41Or you'll get somebody who's then going to burst into tears
24:44and, you know, it's the worst issue in life,
24:46and that's the point, it dawns on them.
24:49If you've got any questions along the way, ask them.
24:53Would I get the opportunity to ring either my mum or dad?
24:55Because I have got work in the morning,
24:57so I need to let them know.
24:59Initially, your right is to have them informed.
25:02So it would be a member of the custody team
25:03letting them know that you're with us,
25:05but you're safe and well.
25:07I've no doubt that if it's quiet enough
25:09and they're not run off their feet,
25:11there's no reason they shouldn't be able to
25:12sort you out with a phone call afterwards,
25:15all right, so that you can speak to them yourself.
25:16Arrested on suspicion of driving,
25:30walked over, prescribed a little alcohol,
25:32after being stopped driving a vehicle with no lights on.
25:34She's provided a sample of 77.
25:36OK, I'm satisfied the arrest is a law fault,
25:40so I'm going to authorize your detention, all right?
25:42Would you like anybody to notify you?
25:45My mum.
25:45Mum?
25:46OK.
25:47Right, we're going to follow this gentleman here.
25:48Follow me, please. Thank you.
25:50The young driver is taken for an evidential breath test.
25:54Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, stop.
26:06Lovely.
26:07That young lass has found herself on the wrong side of it tonight
26:09by a bit of a silly, irresponsible decision.
26:13She'll be well aware of the effects of alcohol,
26:15and I dare say, as thought, I'll risk it.
26:18The limits will affect you differently depending on what you've had to drink,
26:22what you've had to eat that day.
26:24Generally, how you feel in yourself.
26:27What you have provided is 67 and 68,
26:30so you're way over the legal limit, OK?
26:34Based on that, you'll need to be with us about four hours
26:36before you can go, so it's just coming up for midnight,
26:41so it'll be about 4am before we can release you.
26:46To ensure drink drivers don't get behind the wheel again
26:49while under the influence,
26:50police kick them in custody until their alcohol levels are back within normal range.
26:56She's now going to be looking at, ultimately, a driving disqualification,
27:01which will have a real impact on the start of her life
27:04and, potentially, her career options going forward.
27:0767 and 68.
27:09As much as she's classed as an adult, she's 18,
27:16she's found herself in a position where she wants a mum,
27:19almost a bit of a deer in the headlights.
27:20The driving disqualification, they're getting arrested,
27:24they end up in a prison cell overnight,
27:26probably isn't going to compare to the disappointment
27:28that the parents are going to show
27:30when they realise that their 18-year-old's been arrested for drink driving.
27:34In the UK, most serious collisions involving drink drivers happen at night.
27:46For the police, it's vital to get those under the influence off the road.
27:50Go ahead.
27:59Just doing an area search.
28:00Tending the Langley Mill area.
28:0324, thank you.
28:05We're in a residential area.
28:07It's a very busy Saturday night.
28:10PC Chris Wells Jackson is on the lookout for drink drivers.
28:16Cool.
28:17A car with a faulty headline grabs his attention.
28:27Sometimes you just get a feeling if you're behind a particular vehicle
28:31and you look at the driver and their demeanour goes to show
28:34that they probably shouldn't be driving.
28:36They get quite nervous.
28:37They're doing things that a normal person wouldn't necessarily do.
28:43An ACF 4 code 2, please.
28:47Yeah, I've got the details.
28:52Certain Audi.
28:55Audi A3S Live and Black.
28:57For insurance, no reports.
28:59Thomas Black.
29:00Received.
29:01I've got it stopped.
29:06Do you want to come and join me?
29:07Yeah, mate.
29:08I know where you are.
29:08Unsure of how the driver might react,
29:12Chris radios PC Andy Swift nearby.
29:15I'll go and join him to him.
29:17Tell me how it's all right.
29:18Hello.
29:20I've only stopped you because your lights are out on your back
29:22and you've got a light out on the front.
29:25Yeah, no problem.
29:26Have you had anything to drink tonight?
29:27I have, yeah.
29:28I've had about four cans of Stella's.
29:31Have you?
29:32Yeah.
29:32Just stop smoking that for me then
29:33because you're going to have to be breathalysed, aren't you?
29:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:35All right, just chuck that on your passenger seat for me.
29:37The ethanol in some vapes
29:39can affect the accuracy of a breathalyser test.
29:43When did you have your last drink?
29:45About 10 minutes ago.
29:46I'm not going to arrest you yet
29:47because I need to breathalyser you and see if you're around there.
29:49However, I'm going to detain you
29:50because I believe that you may be unfit to drive
29:52through what you've told me.
29:53Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:54Are you well known to us?
29:56A little bit.
29:57A little bit.
29:58Is this your vehicle then?
29:59No, it's my cousin's.
30:00This is your cousin's.
30:01Does he know you've taken it?
30:02No.
30:03No?
30:03So you've talked to it as well then?
30:05Yeah, yeah.
30:06My colleague's going to come join me in a minute.
30:08I'll get him to bring your breathalyser over
30:09and we'll go from there.
30:10All right.
30:11Just keep that down because I need to breathalyser you.
30:13Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
30:14But that interferes with it, doesn't it?
30:16No, that does it.
30:17Come on, I'm playing ball with you.
30:19For somebody that's intoxicated,
30:21they can become very unpredictable
30:22where all they're thinking about is themselves
30:24and how they're going to get themselves sorted
30:26then it can become very difficult and dangerous for us.
30:29All right, my colleague's here now, so...
30:31Right, because you've told me that you've had four stellas,
30:33I'm going to require you to provide me
30:35with a sample of breathalyser analysis, OK?
30:36Are you happy to provide me a sample of breathalyser analysis?
30:38Wonderful.
30:39So you had your last can of stellar about ten minutes ago, you think?
30:42Well, we'll wait another five, six minutes then
30:44before we do this.
30:45Five, six minutes?
30:46Because I have to wait 20...
30:47Five minutes of the vape?
30:48No, because that interferes with this, doesn't it?
30:50So it's on the roof of the car here.
30:52The driver still won't give up his vape,
30:54so the cops may not get an accurate alcohol reading from him.
31:00Get out of the car now.
31:03Do you want gassing?
31:04Get out of the car now!
31:08It didn't have to be like that, did it?
31:12Gassing, gassing.
31:14Right, right, give me on then, now!
31:16Oh, now!
31:17You were being compliant, now you're playing all.
31:19Right, are we sorted?
31:25Are you going to behave yourself?
31:27Do you want to sit on your arse or do you want to stay on your front?
31:30Because you're in a puddle at the moment.
31:33If you want to be silly, this is what happens, isn't it?
31:34All right?
31:35I was being right with you up till then,
31:37and all that over of eight...
31:38Put your back against the wall, sit up.
31:41Put your back against the wall, sit up.
31:43Yeah, but there were no need for it, wasn't it?
31:47Forget the van, I think.
31:48And how are you tango's here for?
31:51Go ahead.
31:53Loosen them a little bit.
31:53I'll get two fingers there, two fingers there.
31:56This lad's been a little bit silly,
31:58and we've had to drag him out his car and take him to the floor.
32:00Would you just ask Amber Valley if they've got a van to spare,
32:03because he may cause us some issues shortly,
32:05and he's a bit wet because he's been in a puddle?
32:07Yes, yes, I believe they're aware.
32:10He's compliant at the minute,
32:11but we've obviously had a few little issues with him, so...
32:13What do you thought?
32:14Drink driving's a very selfish act,
32:16but unfortunately a lot of people decide now
32:18that they think they can get away with it,
32:20and they are making that decision knowingly,
32:22and it's putting everybody else at risk.
32:24It's frustrating for us,
32:25because we know that we've got to put ourselves at risk sometimes
32:28to make sure we take those people off the road,
32:31and that could be putting ourselves at risk,
32:33actually getting hold of that person,
32:35getting them out of vehicle.
32:35It's a dangerous game that we play sometimes,
32:38but we still have to do our job.
32:41Right, so because you've been driving a motor vehicle,
32:44and you've told me that you've had a drink,
32:45so therefore you've had a suspicion,
32:47I've already given you the requirements you've said
32:49you're going to provide,
32:50so if you can...
32:51Kurt and I start to see your lips around the tube,
32:53let's all tell you to stop.
32:57Stop, thank you.
32:5778.
33:02So that's double and a little bit more, okay.
33:07He's blown 78 at three minutes past one,
33:11so he's under arrest for that,
33:13and he's also said that he's twopped the vehicle from his cousin,
33:17so he's under arrest for that as well.
33:18As well as being more than double the alcohol limit
33:21and admitting to taking the car without consent,
33:25the man doesn't have a current driver's licence,
33:28and he's not insured to drive this car.
33:30A few empty cans in the car,
33:33which I'm assuming he's drank whilst he's been in it,
33:35cos he said he's been living in it for the last few days, so...
33:38And very accurate to what he said,
33:40it's four cans of Stella.
33:42And he's vape.
33:45More officers arrive to help.
33:49He was calm to start off with,
33:52and then for some bizarre reason,
33:53just because he couldn't have hold of his vape,
33:55cos I needed to do the breath test with him,
33:56he kicked off.
33:57So, of course, we ended up dragging him out of the car,
33:59which we didn't want to do.
34:01And then we've had a bit of a roll round with him,
34:02but he's just a bit unpredictable,
34:04up and down,
34:05so we'll get him off in the back of the van,
34:08and we'll get his car seized.
34:19Coming up...
34:21Caught at more than twice the limit...
34:27Just stand up here. Stop being silly.
34:30This driver's intent on causing trouble.
34:33Just stand up.
34:34No, don't walk off.
34:36Listen, you can't just walk off.
34:38You've got to listen to what I'm saying.
34:39Hello.
34:55You all right?
34:56Have you had anything to drink tonight?
35:05I have, yeah.
35:06I've had about four cans of dollars.
35:08But really wanted to vape.
35:11Get out of the car now!
35:16It didn't have to be like that, did it?
35:17I mean, I've had...
35:18It wasn't much more than my car.
35:20You even need to untighten the right wing,
35:36which is to the left,
35:37what'd you want?
35:38Well, once we get in there, they'll be coming off as long as you comply, isn't it?
35:44Stop banging your head!
35:49Stop banging your head!
35:51We'll sort it when we get inside.
35:53It's too short, look!
35:54From what I've been told, they've been sorted.
35:57You put two fingers in that, Matt.
36:02That's two fingers.
36:04Never!
36:05A hundred percent, that is too thin.
36:08But I can get two fingers in it, and I've hardly got the thinnest fingers in my own.
36:11I've got a bit of weak about me, so...
36:14Well, so have I, I've got chunky fingers and I can get them in.
36:23Stop banging your head!
36:24What are you trying to achieve, exactly?
36:39What are you trying to achieve?
36:41I want my draw and cut, loosened to the same as my last one.
36:46But while ever you're banging your head, and showing some sort of aggression, we're not going to loosen your cuffs, are we?
36:51You're banging your head against the cage, it's not exactly normal, is it?
36:56Are we going to be good?
37:00Good lad, come on.
37:02I've been waiting for you, and I will be all the way through.
37:06Careful.
37:08Up to that door.
37:10To charge his suspect with drink driving, Chris needs to test him on the evidential machine, while his alcohol levels are still high.
37:20If I take them off, we're going to behave.
37:22Yeah.
37:23Yeah.
37:24Have I not quite operated?
37:26You thought what?
37:27Have I not quite operated?
37:28Mostly.
37:29We just had a bit of a disagreement at the roadside, didn't we?
37:32The devices that we use at the roadside are a rough indicator of the amount of alcohol that's in your system,
37:37and the machine now and in custody is a much more accurate and evidential machine.
37:41There's always that question of, are they going to be under when we get to the custody suite?
37:45Because every moment, you're dropping that alcohol out of your system.
37:48I've witnessed driving on the road.
37:50He got a couple of lights out of the vehicle, so I've stopped it.
37:53He's admitted to have been drinking four cans of Stella prior to driving,
37:57and also that he'd swapped the vehicle from his cousin.
38:01So we've got to make those inquiries.
38:03However, at the moment, he's been arrested.
38:04What we're going to do, we're going to do an evidential breath test, then you're going to get better down a bit.
38:08Can you get some points?
38:09Yeah, yeah, get some dry ones.
38:11Yeah.
38:12Okay, so I require you to provide me two specimens of breath for analysis by means of an approved device.
38:17I've got to do this first, and then I'll sort you the dry clothes.
38:21Listen, listen, listen, I'm not going to do nothing.
38:24Well, if that's a failure to provide, then that's a failure to provide.
38:27I'm not doing it.
38:29Just stand up here. Stop being silly.
38:31You need to come answer these questions.
38:33Come and stand at the desk.
38:35Just answer the questions, and then we can get on with it, and I can get you some dry clothes, can't I?
38:41There's always something in the back of your mind when you're in that scenario, and your experience tells you that you need to be on edge constantly because you never know who you're dealing with.
38:50Are you going to come and do the breath test now?
38:52Just stand up.
38:53No, don't walk off.
38:55Listen, you can't just walk off.
38:57You've got to listen to what I'm saying.
38:59Keep my head in, listen.
39:00Right.
39:01If you're going to carry on, you're going to get stripped in yourself.
39:03Yeah, of course, sir.
39:04No, stop, stop.
39:05Stop tensing up.
39:06I'm not tensing up.
39:07You are tensing up.
39:08You're tensing up now.
39:09Are you going to come and do the breath test?
39:11Yes.
39:12Right.
39:13Oh, Jesus.
39:14Remaining professional, remaining calm, and making sure that you deal with people in the right manner is absolutely imperative to make sure that we get everything right.
39:24Have a seat.
39:25Just take a couple of deep breaths.
39:27We'll chill out, and then we'll be all right, won't we?
39:29When I tell you to do so, relax, take a deep breath, place the mouthpiece in your mouth, and make a good seal around it with your lips.
39:36Then blow steadily and evenly until I tell you to stop.
39:39Once this is done, it'll take about five minutes.
39:42I'll get you dry clothes, we'll get you some snout, we'll get you a drink, and then you can get your head down for a bit.
39:47Give your breath.
39:48And go.
39:49Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
39:56Perfect, the number.
39:5769 or 70.
39:58They're your results.
39:59Ok, so that's twice the limit.
40:01A good few hours with your head down, you'll be interviewed in the morning about a twat, and then you're going to be charged with the drink-driving element.
40:08Would you like me to get you some dry clothes?
40:10Yeah.
40:11I will do that.
40:12This chap's been very up and down.
40:14He's continued to be quite difficult in custody, but eventually he's been happy to provide two samples of breath in the evidential machine.
40:21This one.
40:22And he's blown a lower evidential reading of 69, which is twice the legal limit, so he'll have to be interviewed in the morning about the twat element, if we can actually establish that's happened.
40:31I don't doubt that he's been living in that car for the last couple of days drinking, and I'm sure he's probably been driving around absolutely hammered as he was tonight.
40:39We'll see what we'll get in the morning, but realistically he's getting charged, he's going to get disqualified, so it's a good result.
40:57After four hours in a cell, Matt Cork's 18-year-old drink driver is sober enough to be charged.
41:04You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you don't have to mention now something which you're late to a line in court.
41:09Anything you do say may be given in evidence, okay?
41:11I'm going to give you a bail.
41:13You need to go to Chesterfield Magistrates Court and answer your bail, okay?
41:16I do have to tell you if you fail to attend and answer that bail, there'll be a warrant out for your arrest.
41:21Matt will drive the young woman home.
41:24Okay, that's fine.
41:25You're free to go.
41:26Do you want to pop your jumper now?
41:28It does drop a bit fresh out there.
41:30Cheers, Sarge.
41:31All right, take care.
41:41Last year, Derbyshire police prosecuted more than 1,200 drink drivers and attended over 70 collisions where alcohol was involved.
41:52At no point has ever crossed my mind to think, having had a few pints, I'll, you know, forget the taxi, forget the five-minute walk, I'll just take the car, I'll risk it.
42:00The freedom that you get being able to drive, it's not a given right, it's a privilege at the end of the day.
42:06So why am I going to put my driving licence in jeopardy by taking that risk of getting behind the wheel after I've had a few drinks?
42:14I'm a driver on a road, my partner's a driver on a road, we drive around with our kids in the car, as friends in the car and it could be us that's been hit by a drink driver and it does scare the life out of me.
42:28Realistically, if you're going to have a drink, just don't drive and if you plan on driving, don't have a drink.
42:34A lot of fatalities and serious injuries do come from drink and drug drivers becoming more prevalent again.
42:40It's very frustrating for us because if you need a lift somewhere, you can either ring somebody to come and get you or you get a taxi or you can get a bus or you can walk.
42:48It just shows a blatant disregard for other people.
42:51If you're a drink driver, you've got to be lucky every time, we just need to be lucky once.
42:55In this episode, the suspected drink driver who left the scene of a collision with a motorbike.
43:06I take pictures as well. He's too much drinking.
43:10Was convicted for failing to provide.
43:12No, we're not going to help. You never know.
43:17He was disqualified from driving for three years and given a six-month community order to complete rehabilitation and alcohol treatment.
43:26Got a vehicle failing to stop.
43:30Hands out the window. No lights on.
43:32The 18-year-old driver who was under the influence.
43:36Pull over. That way. She's got the message.
43:40Was sentenced to a 17-month disqualification, reduced by 17 weeks if she completes a drink driver safety course.
43:49Arrested on suspicion of driving whatsoever prescribed low alcohol after being stopped driving a vehicle with no lights on.
43:55She's provided a sample of 77.
43:58She was also fined and ordered to pay court costs.
44:03Have you had anything to drink tonight?
44:05I have, yeah. I've had about four cans of dollars.
44:09And the driver who was pulled over with faulty lights and wanted to vape.
44:15I didn't have to manhandle you, did I?
44:17Wasn't charged with taking the car without consent.
44:20But is due to appear in court for drink driving and driving without a license and no insurance.
44:27If found guilty, he could be facing a driving ban and prison time.
44:32He fuerte and he killed him after aange forward to leaving a big conant,
44:34kept keeping his keys Oops.
44:35And that's all.
44:36Damn it easy.
