00:00Police, that's a gator! Stop!
00:02Drive is making off.
00:04Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:05Pull over in here now!
00:07Might be game on for something here.
00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22We just have warning markers for firearms.
00:25Vehicle's done.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:35Here you go, here you go.
00:36Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40No doing it!
00:41Come out here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Police!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57For the traffic cops.
00:59We've blown 128.
01:00Eleven minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Conspicion is theft of motor vehicles.
01:05Kenny, do not run.
01:07Smack the officer!
01:09And that's a problem!
01:10All right.
01:14It's got a vehicle failing to stop.
01:16Coming up.
01:17It's a crash, crash, crash.
01:19Drivers running.
01:20Young, dangerous drivers.
01:23Speed is 9-0.
01:25Vehicles all over the road.
01:26At high speed.
01:27There was absolutely nothing.
01:29Straight, I don't mean.
01:31Causing chaos.
01:33These cars are killing machines.
01:35Slow down, mate, yeah?
01:37And emergency services.
01:39Where's the wedge in itself?
01:40It's pinned by his head.
01:42Fight to save a young man's life.
01:44We are breathing poorly.
01:47It isn't looking particularly good at the minute.
01:48Oh, close.
02:04Van, mate, like, moved into Fair Lane.
02:07About two foot from that red car.
02:10Near Chesterfield, traffic cop Matt Cooling is on patrol,
02:14looking for a young, disqualified driver.
02:17I'm receiving, Stu.
02:18If I come across this car, mate, I've not got any drug wipes.
02:21Have you got any with you?
02:23Yeah, I've got one.
02:24Lovely.
02:26Across Derbyshire, there has been a recent rise in crashes involving the under-25s.
02:32There's definitely an increase in young drivers having road traffic collisions.
02:37They take these risks because they feel invincible.
02:39They think that nothing's going to happen.
02:40Unfortunately, they leave them wide open to making a serious and fatal mistake.
02:47Yep, past details.
02:51Dominate all units monitoring.
02:53Any units are able to start making their way to that area.
02:56What's happening?
02:57They've just shouted up.
02:58They've just reacted to their presence and made up at speed.
03:01Yeah, we're seeing more.
03:02Several miles away, there's a report of another young driver speeding away from the police.
03:09Yeah, make me wave.
03:11Yeah, male is also known to us.
03:13Also showing outstanding wanted.
03:16Yeah, 248.
03:16The suspect is a 24-year-old male, wanted by police on suspicion of other offences.
03:25Hopefully he's coming off.
03:27Stand by.
03:28Matt moves into position to intercept.
03:33These types of young drivers can be very unpredictable.
03:37They really do raise the stakes.
03:42All right, stay ahead of us.
03:44Continuing.
03:46Speed is up to the 40s.
03:50More throat to continue, please.
03:52Yeah, for 30, yeah.
03:53Yeah, it's good.
03:56Initially, you might get that adrenaline burst for the first 5 or 10 seconds,
04:00but very quickly, you become really focused and switch on to what you're trying to do.
04:04Speed is now 6-0 increasing, and the Fiora is low at the moment.
04:10Last year, nearly 2,000 young drivers were fined for dangerous driving.
04:152,000 young drivers, coming to you.
04:19Yeah, 2,4.
04:20Speed is 7-0 in a 4-0.
04:23The RA is medium due to speed.
04:26Receive.
04:28Speed is 9-0.
04:31Overtaking of the members of the public.
04:33The driver is doing nearly 100 miles per hour and clips an oncoming car, sending debris towards Matt.
04:41It is inherently dangerous.
04:44This driver driving it well in excess of the speed limits, going through village, towns, all it takes is a mistake or an error of judgment.
04:52You know, the driver's going to crash.
04:53Consequences could be massive for that.
04:55The vehicle's all over the road.
04:58The RA is high.
05:00I'm just conscious I need to order the members of the public.
05:03I'm holding back, and they're good probably 3,400 yards off it now.
05:07Speed is 7-0 in a 3-0.
05:10The RA is medium.
05:12Just trying to play catch.
05:15Oh, stand by.
05:18It's crash, crash, crash.
05:20It is crash.
05:20We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
05:29They need to be coming on a Cat 1.
05:30There's obviously been a significant impact with at least two or three of these vehicles.
05:34Receive, thank you.
05:37This job, it's a real balancing act.
05:39Priorities can change in an instant.
05:41The first priority in my head is the treatment of, you know, people that have been caught up in this.
05:48Hiya.
05:49Right, are you OK?
05:50Is everyone all right?
05:51There is a massive level of apprehension as to what am I going to find and what am I going to see?
05:58There was absolutely nothing.
06:00No, no.
06:00Straight ahead, I'm infamous.
06:02That is a feeling right down to your gut.
06:05It's a horrible, horrible feeling.
06:08Sit tight, both of you.
06:09All right, I'm just going to check on the others.
06:10I'll come back to you, yeah.
06:12There are four cars and seven casualties involved.
06:16But the 24-year-old wanted suspect has disappeared.
06:19Who was in this car?
06:22OK, is everyone all right initially?
06:24Well, I think she's a bit shook up and she's hit her hair bags a bit of red, so I don't know if we might need it.
06:30Just to check him out.
06:32Yeah, yeah, don't worry, I'm getting that coming.
06:35You OK?
06:35Yeah.
06:35Yeah.
06:36Husband, are you OK?
06:37No.
06:37No, we can't breathe.
06:39How old's your husband?
06:41He's 66.
06:43OK.
06:45I don't think the door's going to open, Doug, is it?
06:47No.
06:47No.
06:48I want you just to remain here just for now.
06:50I'm not going to move you until the ambulance gets here unless I need to.
06:53Right.
06:53OK, if anything changes with your breathing or anything, you must let me know.
06:56Do you understand?
06:57Yeah.
06:58At eight, Tanger 36.
07:00Go ahead.
07:01The driver of the Red Duke is a 66-year-old male.
07:04He's got breathing complications.
07:06If you can pass that to ambulance, please.
07:08They need to be on the hurry.
07:10Received, thank you.
07:11Anybody else hurt, then?
07:14There's three other cars that were involved.
07:15Oh, Geoffy, no.
07:18Never nice for members.
07:19They'll probably get caught up in these things.
07:21It's the driver that's decided he ain't going to stop for the police.
07:25He's going to do his hardest to get away.
07:27It shows how selfish they are, not giving a thought for anyone else other than themselves
07:31by running off when people are seriously injured.
07:33So just sit tight for me.
07:35I'll come back to you in a second, OK?
07:36The subject has run off and got up some sort of woodland.
07:42Matt updates control on the runaway driver.
07:46Can we get your local units to start looking at that trail for us, please?
07:49Yes, yes, we're doing that already.
07:52Juliet 6, sir, out on the front.
07:54The dog unit is deployed to help with the search.
07:59Hey, Juliet 6, sir.
08:00I'm searching in that gap now.
08:01The dog's taking me straight through it, back towards the footpath.
08:04Let's find him.
08:05Find him.
08:06Find him.
08:07Yeah, understood.
08:11Back at the crash scene.
08:13Mate, there's two people injured here.
08:16He's got breathing difficulties.
08:18Some of the victims are deteriorating.
08:21My face hurts my chest and I'm in.
08:23His ribs are hurting in his knees and his face.
08:27Hey, take a 3-6.
08:29Can you just chase EMAS to see if they've got an ETA as of yet?
08:33We've still not got one state six for anybody.
08:35Yes, yes, yes, we do.
08:37Are you all right?
08:38Yeah, good.
08:40The fire service arrived to assist.
08:43The most intrusion is that red tube, from what I can see.
08:46He's the worst in terms of injury, because he's got breathing difficulties.
08:50An ambulance is also on its way.
08:52Let's get that door open because we've got an easy access bit more.
08:54Yeah, nice one.
08:55Yeah.
08:57Sit tight for us, then, my love.
08:58All right.
08:59So, there are seven people, mate.
09:05The most severe that we've sort of identified is the driver of the red car, who's still in
09:12situ, breathing difficulty.
09:15Fire service have now, obviously, making an entry.
09:17You've got two in this one, and then you've got three here.
09:19With paramedics tending to the casualties.
09:24Where's the subject gone?
09:25So, allegedly, run off in this direction.
09:28Adam's deployed with the dog now.
09:29The search for the runaway driver has so far been unsuccessful.
09:37Did they come through that footpath?
09:38Because I'm state six there now.
09:43Is this the subject gone?
09:44Yeah.
09:45As there's no further sightings of the suspect.
09:48Apparently, some witnesses have said he's pleaded.
09:51Officers secure evidence from the car, and a warrant for his arrest will be circulated nationally.
09:57There's caps in the back.
09:58Yeah.
09:58We're wearing that, we're drying it.
10:01Right, has anything changed with you guys?
10:03We're okay.
10:04It's finishes all right.
10:06Matt obtains an account from a family member.
10:10So, which way were you going then, Dalton?
10:12We'd literally just set off down here, and then next minute, I don't even know what had happened.
10:17We were just spinning.
10:20Do you remember when the police are chasing somebody, and it comes into a built area, are they not meant to back off and let them go?
10:27It's difficult for me to answer that question, because I was the one that was pursuing inmates.
10:30I mean, the answer is no, realistically, that doesn't always happen.
10:34Pursuits are managed.
10:35I can talk to you about that later, you know, at a later time and date and stuff, yeah.
10:39I think the misconception is that, you know, at certain times and certain places that we'll just call pursuits off, and, you know, that is not always the case.
10:49But it is right that officers like myself are held to account.
10:52I'm involved in something that's led to, you know, someone being seriously injured.
10:57And I completely understand where their frustrations lie, but it's not for me to give them all the answers at that stage.
11:05Due to the driver's disappearance and some of the casualties sustaining serious injuries, the scene will remain in lockdown for some time, while the crash investigation concludes.
11:15Ultimately, the person to blame was the driver that's decided he ain't going to stop for the police, made no difference whether I was behind him or not, that he continued to drive in that dangerous manner.
11:28Coming up...
11:34Just rise and fall, but not conscious, so, yeah.
11:37An inexperienced driver...
11:38Witnessed the whole thing, car went straight into virgin.
11:41...is left in a critical condition.
11:44I think his life, it is in the balance.
11:48It's a crash, crash, crash.
11:50And after a high-speed chase...
11:52One decamp.
11:54...another desperate young driver flees the scene.
11:57Stay there.
11:58I've had a report of a serious RTC, if we've got any units that can start travelling.
12:18Yeah, I see.
12:19Injuries at this time are unknown.
12:22Near Chesterfield, PC Mac Cooling is responding to a serious crash involving an 18-year-old.
12:28There are 95 deaths or serious injuries every week involving a young driver on UK roads.
12:44There's definitely an upward trend of young drivers having road traffic collisions.
12:50The vehicles come into contact with the tree.
12:53When you're in collision with these sorts of things, there is no give, there's no bounce.
12:56It's a hell of an impact.
12:57It sounds quite a nasty collision, this.
13:01There are possibly multiple casualties inside.
13:04The first priority is going to be, you know, the welfare of the people that are there.
13:10Multiple units are en route.
13:11I'm not a million miles behind you, mate.
13:19It sounds pretty serious, so it could be serious or fatal, I reckon, this.
13:23I've seen some horrendous things, and I've seen lots of things with young drivers as victims.
13:36When I attend these serious collisions, I often stand there thinking it's just a complete waste of a life.
13:43As Matt arrives, fire crews and traffic cop Stuart Smith are already on scene.
13:53He's gone in where he's wedged himself.
13:57He's pinned by his head.
14:00He's not got injury to his leg at all to do with his head.
14:02Just single lock.
14:03Single lock, yeah.
14:04The young casualty needs urgent medical care, but his head is trapped in the wreckage.
14:12I've seen what I've seen inside.
14:14He's just rising.
14:15Yeah.
14:15But not conscious, so, yeah.
14:18From three, six, it is believed just to be one single occupant, which is the driver.
14:23We've got no medical assessment yet.
14:24They're still trying to get him out of the car.
14:26My role would initially turn up to a serious collision.
14:29Here to preserve the scene, keep all the other emergency services safe,
14:33and ultimately the public, you know, as best we can, out of the area.
14:37These entire family that just turned up, they end up having to see if they are,
14:42they're going to be darting across here.
14:43Yeah.
14:44We do get families that do attend the scene of these collisions.
14:47Of course, the first thing they want to do is get to their loved one.
14:50We have to then balance their needs and the job that we have to do.
14:54So I'll try to get them filled out of there.
14:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:56Yeah.
14:58I know, it's the mum and dad in two.
15:0020 minutes after the crash, the driver's finally freed.
15:06My understanding at the minute is he's unconscious,
15:09so we're still pending an update on how serious injuries are,
15:11but it isn't looking particularly good at the minute.
15:16He's been noticed on the satellite since the first paramedic on scene is here.
15:21Prognosis-wise, he's clearly not threatening.
15:23Yes.
15:24We are breathing for him.
15:27Oh, right, okay.
15:28So he's not breathing himself then.
15:30So at the minute, we're just waiting for the air ambulance doctor to attend to see
15:33so he can stabilise him, so they can get him off to hospital.
15:39Prison care doctor.
15:41So basically, they've had to put him in a coma.
15:43Because they might end up with, like, swelling.
15:46Like, brain injuries and stuff.
15:47Yeah.
15:49The medical teams are basically breathing for him.
15:54I think his life, you know, it is in the balance.
15:57We're not going to know much more until ultimately he's at hospital and he's had a scan.
16:03With the young driver on his way to hospital.
16:07Right, I'll just, I'll start the RTC side of things then.
16:10Matt and the team begin piecing together how and why the crash occurred.
16:16First thing that's noticeable is the significant intrusion from the roof and the B pillar into
16:22where the driver would be sat.
16:24And I would suspect that that's then hit the driver's head and neck area.
16:28And that's probably what's resulted in the head injury.
16:31I do often come away thinking it's just a waste of a young life.
16:35I've got a teenage son now that isn't going to be far off driving in a few years.
16:39And it really does make me sit and think in my own family.
16:49With a witness alleging speed may be the cause of the crash.
16:54I've not said anything obvious, it myself.
16:56But obviously, your trained eye is far better than mine.
16:59Matt updates the forensic crash investigator.
17:02So that's why I had contact with the tree.
17:06So it's probably hit the way up and come back down it.
17:09Yeah.
17:10It's a relatively mild bend.
17:13Speed limit for this section of road is 40 miles an hour.
17:16It begs the question as to how the driver's lost control on the road.
17:22It's still a kick to here.
17:23So it's already been sideless a bit tired, isn't it?
17:26Yeah, it's still a lot, yeah.
17:30What we think's happened is the near side front wheel has started to mount and hit the verge here.
17:36We think the vehicle's began to turn, at which point then it's collided with the tree.
17:42Where it's then come to its final resting point.
17:44While officers continue gathering evidence, there's an update.
17:53The suggestion is that he may have had a drink.
17:57We'll look at getting a blood sample from him.
18:00That will potentially then be sent off for analysis later.
18:03With the crash scene investigation winding down,
18:06the young driver is undergoing treatment in hospital for a suspected life-changing brain injury.
18:12Even though someone's seriously injured in a collision,
18:16you have to gather all that evidence that if they've done something, ultimately it's illegal.
18:21They need to understand that there is a consequence for their actions,
18:24and that's why we do the work that we do.
18:27Ruth's, you know, caved in.
18:29It's catastrophic, really.
18:31But you'd be sat here, mate, wouldn't you?
18:33Your head would be there, wouldn't it, I reckon?
18:37Very lucky that, you know, he's not been killed at the scene.
18:42And I ask, I can go two, three.
18:55Can you do me at 10.15, please?
18:58Go ahead and call on location.
19:01Accidents involving young drivers are on the rise.
19:04So traffic cops like P.C. Craig Dawes are always on the lookout for under-25s.
19:11The traffic officer, you've seen an increased trend in young drivers being involved in more and more collisions.
19:17We're finding that the younger generation are now able to get more powerful cars,
19:22which obviously creates its own danger.
19:24Craig approaches a car park where the young often gather at night.
19:36A suspicious car suddenly takes off.
19:39Young drivers want to be involved in pursuits that take more risk.
20:05Because they're so fearless and they're just not bothered at that age,
20:08it does pose a massive risk to us and the public.
20:13The RA's low, the speed is 4-0.
20:16Have you got any local units with Spinger?
20:17Yeah, from 0-1, we'll make those inquiries.
20:22It's a left, left, left.
20:24Then a right, right, right.
20:31It's a crash, crash, crash.
20:32Stand by, stand by.
20:391D camp.
20:41Drivers running.
20:45Stay there.
20:46Stay there.
20:49Wait there.
20:50Do not move yet.
20:52The driver's male, dressed in black.
20:53Running.
20:54Yes.
20:56Yes.
20:56Yes, hold on.
20:57Can we just have an ambulance, please?
21:00Yes, yes.
21:00They are conscious, but it was quite an high-speed impact.
21:05It's rolled as well.
21:06Obviously, my concern was the people trapped in the vehicle,
21:09so I've stopped to make sure that they're all right.
21:11I see you, thank you.
21:12The car has flipped, with two passengers and a dog inside.
21:19Do us a favour, just tie it to the fence or something.
21:21No, he's not nasty.
21:22I know he's not, but he must be upside down in a car, aren't he?
21:27I'm scared of...
21:28What's your name, pal?
21:31I was rolling the fog.
21:32I'm doing no...
21:32Are you injured at all?
21:35You injured, pal.
21:37They're telling me they're not injured,
21:38which is very, very, very lucky.
21:42So I'm guessing we were getting detained, didn't we?
21:44Well, mate, you're a moment, but we'll see.
21:45Obviously, I can see you're not driver, so...
21:47What's that?
21:48What's driver, then?
21:50I don't know.
21:51I don't know.
21:51Who's it come back to, any of that vehicle?
21:55It comes back to...
21:56Craig runs checks with control.
22:00This female has got to spin the vehicle.
22:03She is linked to yourself.
22:05It's believed the woman is the girlfriend of the registered owner.
22:09You want to give him a ring and tell him to come back
22:11because he's having a lot of problems, or...
22:13He doesn't have a phone.
22:15Okey-dokey.
22:17It's just makes it a lot easier if he comes back to talk to us.
22:21It is going to be him.
22:26I've just asked him to come back and be sitting at the phone.
22:30He's got a full licence, he's insured.
22:32And there's no reason for him not to stop.
22:37He's nearly killed you two, then, haven't he?
22:40Craig suspects the reason for the driver's disappearance
22:43could be linked to drink or drugs.
22:46Drugs are definitely a problem that we're seeing an increase of on the unit.
22:50It seems to be from the ages of 18 to 25.
22:54They might take a line of coke, feel OK,
22:57get in a car, off they go, drive.
23:00The next thing you know, they've crashed.
23:03What you had, mate, cos you're...
23:04I had a thing.
23:07Look at your eyes, what we had then.
23:09Joint, have you?
23:10You're just chewing your gun, that's all.
23:12Dave, are you used to...
23:23A car?
23:24I hear you.
23:24Cheers.
23:25Traffic cop Dave McAllister arrives to assist.
23:29I can't go near her, she's got that.
23:32Just walk your dog down there, we're all good.
23:35Do you want to get out now?
23:36You are a lucky boy, aren't you?
23:41Despite appearing unharmed,
23:43the passengers still need to be examined.
23:47Get your ambulance and get you checked over.
23:49That's my concern.
23:50There's the second passenger,
23:51can you just have a look at her and I'll come back to...
23:54All right.
23:55While paramedics assess the passengers.
24:01Nice of how he runs off and abandons his missus.
24:04The officers search the vehicle.
24:08Save yourself, it's all that's a matter.
24:10Yeah.
24:15We find a lot of empty alcohol packet.
24:19So there's all drug paraphernalia inside it.
24:21We've got a cannabis grinder,
24:23so he's done one.
24:25There's all this stuff.
24:27There's all whisky.
24:28There's whisky.
24:29I can see your passenger's hammered.
24:30Oh!
24:31He says it's adrenaline.
24:33No one has suffered serious injuries.
24:36He's got...
24:37Oh, right, 140.
24:39But there's an update from the paramedics.
24:42They said to him,
24:43what gear you on then?
24:44I'm not...
24:46You're just chewing your gum off and...
24:47Yeah, he's having everything to him.
24:51If you combine youth and inexperience,
24:54took a couple of friends in the car as well,
24:56you know, then you've got your peer pressure,
24:58you're showing off.
24:59He's a massive recipe for disasters.
25:02What kind of a person leaves the girlfriend in the car
25:05and does a runner?
25:06Any normal person,
25:07when they're involved in a crash,
25:08the first thing they think of is,
25:09how is everybody?
25:11Is everybody OK?
25:14Is dog all right, Chuck?
25:15Yeah.
25:16You sure?
25:17Not got any blood coming out of his nose or out like that?
25:20No, he seems all right.
25:21Nobody ever thinks about the dog.
25:23See, I prefer animals to people.
25:26Yeah, he's fine.
25:27He looks to me, doesn't he?
25:28We always make sure they're all right.
25:30It's not the dog's fault
25:30that somebody's decided to drive like an idiot.
25:32It's been about a 90-mile-an-hour impact.
25:36You do know that?
25:37No.
25:38After being ditched by her boyfriend,
25:40the young woman's mum arrives to take everyone home.
25:44The fact is,
25:44if they'd have got ejected from the car,
25:46which we see all the time,
25:47you'd have to come to knock you in the door
25:48and say, your daughter's dead.
25:49The funny thing is, though,
25:51is then just done one and left you.
25:53All right, love.
25:55See you later.
25:55Have a good one.
25:56He's 18, probably first boyfriend has got a car.
26:02Let me show you how good I am,
26:03and then that's the end result.
26:06The police know where the driver lives
26:08and will be bringing him in for questioning.
26:11He's done a run and looked after number one,
26:13which, that tends to be attitude of him.
26:19Coming up...
26:21Coming in.
26:22Craig catches up with the runaway driver.
26:24There's DNA on them airbags,
26:27linking them to yourself.
26:30How are you?
26:3118.
26:32A group of teenagers cause chaos on the roads.
26:36These cars are killing machines.
26:38Slow down, mate, yeah?
26:40And the family of the young driver who hit a tree...
26:44I saw this car.
26:45The new trailer here was Liam.
26:46..come to terms with the crash.
26:51Oi.
26:54Stand by.
27:09That's observations for a dangerous driver.
27:12It was seen to go on the opposite side of the road,
27:14round a blind corner,
27:16swerving around left and right.
27:17I've had a further call come in
27:20to say that it appears to be speeding now.
27:23Yeah, receive, thank you.
27:25You know, right,
27:26every time we've come to boy races, Danny,
27:28I've never found them.
27:29No.
27:30Traffic cops Andy Swift...
27:32Say that now, watch this.
27:33Yeah.
27:34..and Jack Pressland
27:35are just south of Derby city centre
27:38on the lookout for young and dangerous drivers.
27:41There's a report that there's some boy races.
27:43Antisocial driving, it's a particular hot spot for it.
27:47They just move round from location to location.
27:50We're getting more and more calls about young boy races
27:53because members of the public are sick of it.
27:55Excess speed, the noise,
27:58the fact that they're treating the roads as a racetrack,
28:01they're at more risk,
28:02especially when they're in bigger numbers.
28:05And as per usual...
28:07There's nobody here.
28:08There's nobody here.
28:10Hello.
28:10Do we have any units that can start making their way to...
28:13It's revertible, RTC, Derby.
28:17Yeah, received.
28:21When we get reports,
28:22we're expecting another phone call
28:24that someone's crashed
28:25or they've crashed into somebody.
28:27So we're just attending reports
28:29of a multi-car pile-up on the A38
28:31just coming into Derby.
28:34We'll get an update soon,
28:35see if there's any injuries
28:36and then see what we can do to assist.
28:40We've got dumps to the onco-fire.
28:43It's fine, too.
28:44Yes, sir.
28:47Officers are already at the crash site
28:49along with other emergency services.
28:54North or southbound?
28:56South.
29:00He's not stopping.
29:01A young driver has clipped a vehicle
29:15and collided with the barrier.
29:19All right, fella.
29:21Which one's yours?
29:22That one.
29:23Lovely.
29:24While the driver who crashed his car
29:26is being treated by paramedics.
29:28Who's in this one?
29:30You.
29:31Jack speaks to his friends,
29:33the two other drivers
29:34travelling with the crashed golf.
29:36What's happened then, dude?
29:38We were driving.
29:38Yeah.
29:39The lane.
29:40The car that was in the first lane,
29:42he started on verging on
29:43towards him.
29:44Yeah.
29:45And he moves out
29:46and he clips aside
29:48and he starts spinning.
29:50I'm not sure if he was on his phone or something.
29:51Okay.
29:53Old are you?
29:5418.
29:5418.
29:55You got any dash cam?
29:56No.
29:56Okay, mate.
29:57No worries.
29:57Hello.
30:00Hello, boss.
30:01Have you sustained some damage on your car?
30:03Yes.
30:03Yes.
30:04Sergeant Scott Riley
30:05questions the motorist
30:07that the young drivers claim
30:08caused the crash.
30:11Hey, yeah.
30:11Very fast, very fast.
30:13They were going very fast, were they?
30:14Three cars, yes.
30:16Both sets of drivers
30:17are blaming each other.
30:19When we go to road traffic collisions
30:21involving group support,
30:22it becomes a bit of a nightmare for us.
30:24Have you got any dash cam?
30:26No.
30:27No.
30:28We've got everyone telling a different story,
30:31everyone's got a different viewpoint of it.
30:35Without video evidence,
30:36officers turn to witnesses for help.
30:40They've seen his motorist bouncing
30:42side-side across both lanes
30:43and then it's spin out.
30:45The crash was witnessed
30:46by an off-duty officer from Leicestershire.
30:48The vehicle was crashed.
30:51It was travelling on its own
30:52at some speed.
30:53It's gone up behind me,
30:54forced me back into lane one.
30:55It's been a bit aggressive.
30:57The driver, BW,
30:58has then decided to lose control,
30:59hit both sides of the carriageway
31:00a couple of times
31:01and spin out.
31:06You don't do this much damage
31:08if you're doing the speed limit.
31:09It's lucky it's not rolled.
31:12We're not stupid.
31:13You're going too fast.
31:14Together.
31:15You need to stop it.
31:16You're going to kill someone.
31:17I wasn't going that fast.
31:20I'm not saying you were.
31:22I can't prove you were.
31:23But it's pretty obvious
31:25that you're all three of you together
31:26cruising.
31:28These cars are killing machines, right?
31:31They're not toys.
31:32You've got to treat them with respect.
31:34He's lucky not to be dead.
31:37Slow down, mate, yeah?
31:40I think mum's turned up.
31:42Mum of the driver.
31:43The police sergeant, off-duty,
31:46they said that all of you
31:47are driving like idiots.
31:49Listen, my son
31:50is an exemplary character
31:52of an 18-month.
31:53We've got witnesses,
31:55so you've got to understand
31:55as we go and pick up
31:57a lot of bodies
31:57off the road.
31:58I know.
31:59And we take it quite personal
32:00as well when we're going to this.
32:02And it's not nice
32:03having to come to you
32:04at 2 o'clock in the morning.
32:05Our friend lost his son
32:07in January last year.
32:09Right.
32:11If there's one thing
32:12I can say to you tonight
32:13from this,
32:13speed has been an impact.
32:15Slow down.
32:16Treat them with respect.
32:17They will hurt you
32:19if you do something wrong.
32:20The young driver
32:24is free to go
32:25but faces a police interview
32:27about the allegations
32:28at a later date
32:29and a possible prosecution.
32:32They've obviously fallen foul
32:33of the roading experience
32:34at driving
32:34and also potentially
32:35stupidity, really.
32:37He'll have some
32:37long-running ramifications,
32:39no doubt,
32:40for points and fines.
32:42So ultimately,
32:43he'll pay the price
32:44for a moment of madness.
32:45Prognosis-wise,
33:00it's clearly life-threatening.
33:01Yes.
33:02We are breathing poorly.
33:04It isn't looking
33:05particularly good at the minute.
33:08Ten weeks ago,
33:09traffic cop Matt Cooling
33:11attended a potentially
33:12life-threatening crash
33:13where a speeding car
33:15smashed into a tree.
33:17Principal care doctor
33:18said basically
33:19they've had to put him
33:20in a coma.
33:21Because they might end up
33:22like swelling.
33:23Like brain injuries.
33:24The 18-year-old driver,
33:26Leo,
33:27crashed around the corner
33:28from his parents,
33:29Aaron and Donna.
33:31Opened the front door.
33:33The sky was lit
33:34with blue.
33:36And that was it.
33:40Sorry.
33:41The sky was lit
33:45and I just opened the door
33:46and ran through the bushes
33:47and saw his car
33:49in the tree.
33:52I knew straight away
33:52it was Leo.
33:55I just remember
33:56shouting,
33:59Leo, mum is here.
34:00Mum is here, baby boy.
34:03I couldn't afford
34:05to write down.
34:07I needed to be his mum.
34:08I just thought
34:13my boy,
34:14my lad,
34:16what's he bloody done?
34:22Leo was put
34:23in an induced coma
34:24for two weeks
34:25while doctors
34:26tried to reduce
34:27the swelling
34:28to his brain.
34:30The consultant said
34:31he's got life-changing,
34:33personality-changing injuries.
34:35When he started
34:36coming round,
34:37he didn't know
34:37what he was going
34:39to turn out like.
34:40Over the last ten weeks,
34:43Leo has been
34:43in intensive care.
34:47But today,
34:48there is a significant
34:50update on his condition.
34:53Hello.
34:54Hello.
34:54Good day?
35:01Yeah, not being too bad.
35:03Take time.
35:05He's just
35:06progressed so quickly.
35:09Oi!
35:09He can talk,
35:12he can communicate,
35:13he can feed himself.
35:15All these things
35:16that I was so scared
35:17that he'd never do again.
35:20The doctors
35:20and the surgeons
35:21and everybody else said,
35:22how's he doing this
35:23that quick?
35:24Watch out,
35:25I'm on the wall, mate.
35:26So we've got
35:27some hope here.
35:28Leo's coming back.
35:30He's,
35:30wasn't it?
35:30Yeah.
35:31He's going to come back.
35:33Do you want a drink about?
35:40I'm all right,
35:41I've got one.
35:42Good lad.
35:42What do you want for tea?
35:43Pizza.
35:45Yes, boy.
35:46Yeah.
35:47After more than
35:48two months
35:49of rehabilitation,
35:50the hospital
35:51has allowed Leo
35:52a visit home.
35:56That's the only mark
36:00really you've got
36:01from the accident.
36:03Take your specs off a minute.
36:04Let's look at you.
36:05Is it annoying?
36:05Imagine seeing
36:07double old time.
36:08Imagine seeing
36:09two of Sam,
36:09you wouldn't want that.
36:10Yeah, bugger that.
36:13Always been so
36:14full of just
36:16energy.
36:18Yeah.
36:18Fun.
36:19You're so caring
36:20and thoughtful
36:22all the time.
36:24When you do
36:25drive again,
36:25you're having a tank.
36:26He's not driving again.
36:29You can't get him
36:30in a wheelchair,
36:31he tries pulling wheelies.
36:32Anything on wheels
36:33is not allowed.
36:34You can't,
36:35you can't pull
36:36the wheelie
36:36in a car.
36:38Well, I think you tried.
36:41While Leo
36:42doesn't remember
36:42the crash,
36:43an app tracking
36:44his journey
36:45shows a possible cause.
36:48He's leaving
36:48Hollywood.
36:50Shows his speed.
36:51Doing about
36:5257 in a 40.
36:54That's where
36:55he stops
36:55and hits the tree.
36:56Leo was driving
36:5970 miles per hour
37:00above the speed limit
37:02when he lost control.
37:05Gone in a
37:06split second.
37:08From being
37:08absolutely fine
37:09to...
37:10I'm saying
37:11his life's changed.
37:13Yeah.
37:13I'm struggling with walking
37:18and my speech.
37:21I'm having double vision
37:22but hopefully
37:24I'll come back.
37:26My speech should come back
37:28and my walking
37:30should come back
37:31as well.
37:33I feel lucky,
37:35very lucky,
37:36because I
37:37should have died
37:38really.
37:41I took life
37:42for granted
37:43before
37:43because I always
37:45thought all that
37:46could never happen
37:47to me
37:47and then it did.
37:50I won't have
37:52any other advice
37:53to young drivers
37:55apart from
37:56just slow down.
37:58Slow down a bit
38:00please.
38:02The future
38:03is still unclear.
38:04We don't know
38:05what restrictions
38:07he may still have
38:08due to the brain injury
38:10but it's just nice
38:11to have him here
38:13and have
38:15so much of him
38:16still here.
38:18We can cope
38:19with anything else,
38:19can't we?
38:20Yeah.
38:21We've got him,
38:21we've got his personality
38:22and we can manage
38:22with anything else.
38:23Yeah.
38:24Don't ever change,
38:25will you?
38:27Good.
38:27No.
38:31Coming up.
38:33Are you happy
38:33to proceed
38:34with that solicitude?
38:35Let's go.
38:35Craig questions
38:36the suspected
38:37young driver
38:38who flipped his car.
38:39I'm going to put it to you,
38:40you may have consumed
38:41some drink or drugs
38:42that night
38:42and left his mate
38:44and girlfriend
38:44in the wreckage.
38:46There is DNA
38:46on them airbags
38:48linking them
38:49to yourself.
38:50You all right?
39:03Yeah, he's coming here.
39:05Three weeks
39:06after traffic cop
39:07Craig Dawes
39:07was involved
39:08in a pursuit
39:08with the black SEAT.
39:11It's a crash,
39:12crash, crash.
39:13Driver's running.
39:15The suspect driver
39:16who flipped his car
39:17and fled on foot.
39:19He just don't want
39:20to left you.
39:21Leaving two passengers
39:22and a dog inside.
39:24Let the alcohol pack
39:25has arrived at the police station
39:29for an interview
39:29about the incident.
39:31Okay.
39:32You've attended
39:33on a voluntary basis
39:34so you're not under arrest
39:35and you are free
39:36to leave at any point.
39:38The common driving offences
39:39that we're finding
39:40that under-25s commit
39:41are speeding,
39:43drink and drug driving.
39:44They just totally
39:45don't care
39:46and show disregard
39:47to everybody else.
39:48What kind of person
39:49does that
39:50and leaves everybody behind?
39:52At this point
39:53you've not got a solicitor.
39:54Are you happy to proceed
39:55with that solicitor?
39:56Let's go, yeah.
39:57What can you tell me
39:58about that incident?
39:59I'll come in.
39:59Okay.
40:02Do you own that vehicle?
40:03I'll come in.
40:04Does anybody else
40:05have access to that vehicle?
40:06I'll come in.
40:07Was that you
40:08driving that car
40:09when that vehicle
40:10failed to stop
40:10to please?
40:13Vehicle's travelling
40:13far too fast.
40:14It then rolls.
40:16I then see a male
40:17dressed in black,
40:18egg,
40:18and run off.
40:20I speak to the passenger
40:21and her reply
40:22on body cam is,
40:23you know who the driver is.
40:24I'm going to put it to you.
40:26The reason you failed to stop,
40:27you may have consumed
40:28some drink or drugs
40:28that night.
40:29Do you agree to that offence?
40:30No.
40:31Okay.
40:33It's suspected
40:34that the driver
40:34was also involved
40:35in another high-speed crash
40:37several months
40:38before this incident.
40:39It was a black golf
40:41car witness
40:42to have gone
40:43flying up the lane,
40:43smashing to a bottle,
40:44causing damage,
40:45and then a male
40:46in black joggers
40:47driving with two female passengers
40:49had made off.
40:51The young male's girlfriend
40:52was in the car again
40:53and was fortunate
40:54to walk away uninjured.
40:58Passengers confirmed
40:59to the officers
40:59that a male
41:00called
41:00was driving the vehicle.
41:03The airbags
41:04at the time
41:04have activated
41:05and there is DNA
41:07on their airbags
41:08linking them
41:09to yourself
41:10being the driver.
41:14I put it to you
41:15that you were the driver
41:15at that time
41:16and you've run off
41:16when you've crashed
41:17the vehicle.
41:17Is that great?
41:18No.
41:18No.
41:19I'm going to report you
41:21for the defence
41:21of dangerous drive once,
41:23fail to stop once,
41:25leaving the scene
41:26and failing to report twice.
41:28If he's found guilty,
41:30the driver will lose
41:31his licence
41:32for at least 12 months
41:33and could face
41:34up to two years in prison.
41:37That's how you go with it.
41:38When you talk
41:39to young drivers,
41:40they'll laugh and smirk
41:41about it and like,
41:42so what?
41:42And, you know,
41:43the next day
41:43they'll be back out
41:44doing it again.
41:46It's all a big game to them.
41:47They're not bothered
41:48at what car news
41:48they've left behind.
41:50There's a pattern here.
41:51He's crashing
41:52and she's in the car with him.
41:53I don't know why
41:54she's stopping with him.
41:55He's nearly killed her twice
41:56and she continues
41:57to be, you know,
41:58be loyal with him.
41:59I don't get it
42:00because, you know,
42:01it's only going to end up
42:02one way.
42:05Over the last 12 weeks,
42:07Derbyshire police
42:08dealt with 61 young people
42:10involved in crashes,
42:12suspected of serious crimes
42:14or road traffic offences.
42:18We go to more and more
42:19crashes involving young drivers
42:21and we get there
42:22and we're thinking,
42:23how has that person
42:24walked away from this?
42:26Their family,
42:27they're potentially
42:27going to lose someone
42:28because they're driving
42:29like idiots.
42:31With young drivers,
42:32as soon as they pass the test,
42:34they can literally go out
42:34and drive any sort of car
42:36with any size engine
42:37and for me,
42:38that's a recipe for disaster.
42:40Something needs to change
42:41with young drivers.
42:43They need curtailing
42:44in some way.
42:47I tend to find
42:47with the younger generation
42:48that it's a fear factor.
42:50It'll never happen to me.
42:52I'm untouchable.
42:53You don't realise that.
42:54Well, one silly mistake
42:55while you're driving,
42:56you could end up killing
42:57or seriously injuring somebody.
42:58You're going to prison.
43:03In this episode...
43:04Speed is 9-0.
43:06Vehicles all over the road.
43:08The 24-year-old runaway driver
43:11who left a crash victim
43:13with life-changing injuries...
43:15There was absolutely nothing.
43:16Straight, I don't mean anything.
43:18...pleaded guilty at court
43:19to dangerous driving,
43:21causing serious injury
43:22by dangerous driving
43:23and failing to stop.
43:25Those cuts in the back,
43:26is it?
43:26Yeah, wearing that.
43:27I mean, we're driving.
43:28But failed to appear at court
43:30and is on the run
43:31and wanted by police.
43:34Got a vehicle failing to stop.
43:37The driver who flipped his car
43:39after failing to stop
43:40with two passengers
43:41and a dog inside
43:42was charged with dangerous driving,
43:46failing to stop for police
43:47and twice leaving the scene
43:49of a collision.
43:50Well, I'll do your thing.
43:51How are you doing, is it?
43:51No action was taken
43:52for drink or drug driving.
43:55He's also facing separate charges
43:57for driving without due care
43:58and attention
43:59and failure to respond
44:00to a notice of intended prosecution.
44:03These bars are killing machines.
44:06Slow down, mate, yeah?
44:07The three young drivers
44:08involved in a car crash
44:09on the motorway
44:10remain under investigation.
44:13I've seen these motors
44:13bouncing side-side
44:14across both lanes.
44:15They're due to be interviewed
44:17in relation to allegations
44:19made by witnesses at the scene.
44:22And despite being allowed home visits,
44:2718-year-old Leo
44:28is still receiving care
44:30in a specialist rehabilitation unit
44:32in hospital
44:32for a serious brain injury.
44:37The results of his blood test
44:39confirmed there were no traces
44:41of alcohol in Leo's system.
