The Rural Development and Local Government Minister told the House of Representatives today that the Government discovered there were people on the Unemployment Relief Programme who were being paid but never reported to work.

The Minister was responding to a question from the Opposition about the U.R.P.

01:04What I can tell you is that when we came into office, we met 928 workers on paper.
01:13Mr. Speaker, with the number of employees who never reported to work,
01:20some of them who were living outside of Trinidad and Tobago,
01:26termination letters were issued for all 928 contract workers.
01:32There were some of them who, as I say, we couldn't even find them to give them a letter.
01:37Some of them only turned up to receive their letter.
01:40There were also 130 public servants who have been absorbed into the Ministry of Rural Development
01:47and local government and assigned to various municipal corporations throughout Trinidad.
