00:02What did you wish for?
00:04I'm not going to tell you.
00:06For a family that lives and breathes skiing,
00:09Jeff's promotion gives him and Lauren the chance
00:11to raise their daughter, Remy, in the French Alps.
00:14I mean, trails at our door, skiing close by.
00:17We're very lucky. Yes, we are.
00:19We are very, very lucky.
00:20Remy said, I love Villers-de-Lens.
00:22I just don't love the French part.
00:25We need to be able to be comfortable,
00:27but we also need Remy to be comfortable.
00:29I love cozy, like a chalet type of feel.
00:32I just don't want to do that at the expense
00:34of being too far out of town.
00:35Maybe there's some compromising.
00:37Jeff can find the good in any place.
00:39Do you really want a natural colored sofa
00:42with a five-year-old?
00:44It'll be fine.
00:46Sometimes I think it drives Lauren a little crazy.
00:59Can you take off the shoes?
01:01Oh, yeah.
01:02Let's take off your shoes.
01:03Look, we get to measure.
01:04She'd love to measure your shoes.
01:06Being married is fun.
01:07I mean, being married really,
01:08especially to your best friend,
01:10to be able to always have a travel buddy,
01:13an adventure friend.
01:15Which is very helpful in a relationship.
01:17Really fast.
01:18Pshhh.
01:19Pshhh.
01:20Pshhh.
01:21Pshhh.
01:22Our daughter, Remy, is a five-year-old.
01:24One thing that's always been important for us
01:26is skiing.
01:27We are always much happier in the mountains,
01:30in the middle of nowhere.
01:31I was teaching for 20 years,
01:33but I was willing to sacrifice that
01:35to help Remy settle into a new culture
01:38and then decide what I want to do with my life.
01:41They're a little foggy.
01:43It's...
01:44Because this job opportunity came up
01:47for Jeff to move to the mountains in France,
01:50and we thought, why not?
01:52Jeff works for a ski company in Utah
01:54and was offered a promotion
01:56to run his division at the Global Headquarters,
01:58which is only a 40-minute drive
02:00to the majestic ski slopes of Villard-de-Land.
02:03Park City was a great place.
02:06There was a lot to do there,
02:08but at the same time,
02:09we wanted something a little bit smaller,
02:11a little bit more intimate for Remy.
02:13It was a big dream of ours.
02:15I have visited Villard-de-Land a few times.
02:17We have town atmosphere,
02:19but yet we still have that more simple life
02:22in the mountains.
02:23I mean, trails at our door, skiing close by.
02:25We're very lucky.
02:26Yes, we are.
02:27We are.
02:28Ridiculous.
02:29We are very, very lucky.
02:30Do you think this bear has a name?
02:31Um, Barry.
02:32Barry.
02:33Barry?
02:34Mm-hmm.
02:35Living in a small town in France,
02:37it's a little bit difficult to find people who speak English,
02:40so it might be a challenge to not feel isolated.
02:44We need to be able to be comfortable,
02:46but we also need Remy to be comfortable.
02:48Since we're moving here with just one income,
02:50I think I'm worried about finding an affordable place to live
02:53where we can ski down the mountain.
02:55Did you have a look around already?
02:57Having that access to the trails and skiing
03:01and just the outdoor lifestyle is really why we are here.
03:05Villardelan is a small town in the Vercors.
03:09Vercors is a mountain in the French Alps.
03:11For his family, it's a right choice because nature has a very big place here.
03:17Jeff will be working and come back at night.
03:20So Lauren could be more focused on amenities and details of the house.
03:26So for me, three bedrooms would be important.
03:29I do work from home for certain days,
03:31and so having a space for home office,
03:34maybe even some extra rooms for guests would be great.
03:37But we don't want to spend a lot of money
03:39because it's also a beautiful resort town
03:42and there are plenty of nice hotels nearby.
03:45I see what you mean.
03:46We definitely want to be close to the village
03:49and close to Remy's school because we only have one car
03:52and Jeff will need it most days to drive down to work.
03:55But even being a little on the outskirts of town
03:58might be interesting because I love how cozy
04:01like a chalet type of feel of a house would be.
04:04Yeah, I can't argue with a cozy mountain chalet feeling.
04:07I just don't want to do that at the expense of being too far out of town
04:10where I can't walk to where I need to be.
04:13That's right.
04:14We'd also like a place that has some outdoor space
04:17so that we can just open the door and let Remy go out and play.
04:20Being in the center without an outdoor space,
04:22I think I might feel a little bit claustrophobic.
04:25How much would you put on this rental?
04:28Well, right now we just have one income,
04:31so I'm hoping that we spend under 1,900.
04:34Maybe there's a window in there where there's some compromising.
04:39We'll see.
04:40I think, yes.
04:41Okay.
04:42My biggest concern, they don't really agree.
04:45The market here is very tight,
04:47so we don't have that choice in presenting many houses.
04:51Chantal is starting off with something walkable for Lauren.
04:55As you've seen, it's just across the street
04:58there's a school for Remy.
04:59Yeah.
05:00The center is a few meters from here,
05:02so you are close to every amenities of the town.
05:06Then you know that's what I'm looking for.
05:08That's right.
05:09That's right.
05:11This house has been built in the 30s.
05:13Vintage house.
05:14Vintage.
05:15Yeah, but there are five bedrooms,
05:18two and a half bathrooms,
05:20and very large rooms there.
05:23And the garden is quite large, too.
05:25And what is the cost of this house?
05:27$1,700.
05:29Seems low.
05:30The heating costs can be higher because it's a large house,
05:34so it's adjusted price.
05:36That's really hard to budget for,
05:38especially if I'm not working.
05:40I don't know.
05:41I've never lived here for a winter.
05:43Just come in.
05:44Oh, thanks.
05:45Oh, wow.
05:46A nice little bedroom.
05:47Yeah.
05:48And this is a really big open space.
05:52It's very grand, I would say.
05:54Very grand.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Follow me to the kitchen, you should.
05:57Okay.
05:58A big kitchen.
06:00Big and open.
06:01Wait.
06:02Tell me about this.
06:03Is it a wood-fired oven?
06:05It was.
06:06It was, yes.
06:07But it's not anymore.
06:08There's a real oven as well.
06:10There's a bunch of new and old everywhere.
06:13Into another big space.
06:15Another big space.
06:17But, you know, it looks like there's a great door
06:19that heads out to the patio.
06:20During summer, you can walk into the terrace here.
06:24Yeah, we love to be able to eat outside.
06:26We do?
06:28Okay.
06:29I'm sensing a theme.
06:30Another big room.
06:31Of course, yes.
06:32Remy could be playing in the corner.
06:33You could be doing yoga.
06:34Or she could do yoga with you.
06:35Or Remy can be at school and I can do yoga by myself.
06:39Sounds better.
06:40Maybe it's better.
06:41A little peace and quiet.
06:42Perfect.
06:43And it looks like there's an attached bathroom as well?
06:45Yes, that's right.
06:46And tell me about this in the bathroom.
06:49Oh, this is the freezer.
06:51But you have to walk to the bathroom to get your additional food.
06:55To get it.
06:56That's a little awkward.
06:57But nothing's perfect.
06:58I've always tried to look on the bright side of things.
07:03Sometimes I think it drives Lauren a little crazy.
07:06So let's go upstairs now.
07:09Some bedrooms it looks like.
07:11That's right.
07:12You have three bedrooms here.
07:13Yeah.
07:14Okay.
07:15That's colorful.
07:16It could be a great little room for Remy.
07:17A small space would be great for her.
07:19For sure.
07:20There's not much of a mountain chalet feel.
07:22It feels more like just an old French house.
07:25Yes.
07:27The mountain feel in a house, it feels welcoming.
07:30It feels really warm and cozy.
07:32And so for me, that would be ideal.
07:35And another big bedroom.
07:37Yeah.
07:38I'm not sure about the color.
07:40But.
07:42Well, I think it's a lot more space than we need.
07:45You'd easily have one of the bedrooms be an office,
07:47which would be great.
07:49We clearly have room for guests.
07:51Having a big garden is great.
07:53And being across the street from her school.
07:55We can't beat that.
07:56That's really nice.
07:57Even though it feels like a grandparent's French home.
08:01Yes.
08:02You said it's probably expensive to heat as well.
08:04It's about $1,500 three times a year.
08:08Oh, wow.
08:09Okay.
08:10I'm not sure that we need to spend that much money
08:12to have this much space because honestly,
08:14we just don't need it.
08:15It's becoming clearer to Chantal that Jeff's digging in
08:19for a spacious home by the slopes.
08:21But Lauren is laser focusing on daily life at home with Remy.
08:25It would be a great guest room for a lot of people at once.
08:28Are there hotels nearby this house?
08:31They are.
08:32Don't worry.
08:33Don't worry.
08:34Don't worry.
08:35Don't worry.
08:36Okay.
08:37Which way do we need to go?
08:38Le Clarion, this way.
08:39My job offers us this opportunity to be able to come over here
08:43and experience new language, new culture.
08:46What a great opportunity for Remy to grow up in the mountains
08:50as a little bit of a wild child.
08:52She was always an early doer of anything involving movement.
08:56So by 14 months, she was ready to be on skis.
09:00The Larve de Lens is close enough to my office,
09:04but yet it still gets us living in kind of the idyllic
09:07little mountain town that we've been looking for.
09:10When there's this little comma, then that separates the numbers.
09:13I think the adventure is trying to include a five-year-old
09:19in a way that we all have a good time with it.
09:22Hello?
09:23I would be a little scared if somebody answered.
09:27Exploring is fun, but for us knowing that there are some limits
09:32in how far you can push a five-year-old,
09:34and that's what it is to be parents, I think.
09:36Here it goes.
09:40They have a little daughter, so it's a real concern for them
09:43to understand how it works in daily life.
09:47Look around.
09:48I mean, this place looks like a movie set.
09:50I would rather have to drive to work and come home to this
09:53because big cities aren't the best for us.
09:56Yes, okay.
09:57We much prefer to be in nature and be close to the mountains.
09:59I think it's the most important thing for them, in fact,
10:03that Remy will be comfortable and fine in this town
10:06and a house for her.
10:09With the ski slopes a pivotal part of everyone's happiness,
10:12Chantal zeroing in on Jeff's Mountain Chalet Home Vibe request.
10:16We are in a hamlet called Les Guillets.
10:19There is a farm not far from here.
10:21Sometimes cows are coming just right in front of the house.
10:24Remy would love a Cal parade,
10:26but I just can't picture us being able to get into town easily
10:30or to school without having a car.
10:32There is a bus line and a school bus line, too,
10:35so it's very easy.
10:36Okay.
10:38We're very close to the ski area.
10:39Yes, the ski area is five minutes.
10:41Okay.
10:42This house is an old farm which has been renovated.
10:46It's a great old building.
10:47It's really, really beautiful.
10:48Yes, it's nice.
10:49It's got some charm, yes.
10:51With three bedrooms, two bathrooms.
10:54Okay, great.
10:55Yeah.
10:56It has its own garden.
10:57Ah, nice.
10:58The price for the house is $2,200 per month.
11:02Oh, that's a lot.
11:04I just don't want to like it and not be able to afford it.
11:08But it's worth a look.
11:11It's much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside.
11:14That's right.
11:15It's quite unexpecting.
11:17Okay, please follow me in the living room.
11:19Oh, wow.
11:20Oh, I really like the fireplace.
11:24Yes, that looks very cozy.
11:25Oh, that is amazing.
11:26Yeah.
11:27But do you really want to have a natural colored sofa with a five-year-old?
11:32Ah, it'll be fine.
11:35And here is the kitchen.
11:37It's cute.
11:38But there's not a lot of space.
11:41I don't think Remy and I could bake here.
11:44You know how she loves to help me in the kitchen.
11:46True.
11:47It's really a one-person kitchen.
11:48Let's go and see upstairs.
11:50Okay.
11:51The bedrooms.
11:52Here is the biggest bedroom.
11:54Okay.
11:55Great.
11:56As it was for holiday rentals, you can understand the beddings.
11:59Yes.
12:00Absolutely.
12:01That's right.
12:02Would they remove these extra beds if we moved in?
12:04Yes, we can make a deal.
12:06You can even have a home office in the bedroom.
12:08Or it would be a great guest room for a lot of people at once.
12:12Are there hotels nearby this whole house?
12:15They are, don't worry.
12:17Yeah.
12:18So here is the second bedroom.
12:20For Remy, this would easily fit all of her things.
12:24Mm-hmm.
12:25And she would still have lots of room as a play area.
12:27Mm-hmm.
12:28I was okay with maybe living a little bit farther outside of town, especially if it had the right mountain cozy feel that we've been looking for.
12:36And this really fits the bill.
12:38I mean, that's perfect size for Remy.
12:39Yeah, it is.
12:40Yes.
12:41For children, it's okay.
12:42Yes.
12:43For adults, I can't quite relax with a glass of wine in that.
12:46No.
12:47It's cute.
12:48Good.
12:49It is.
12:50I think the house is lovely.
12:51Yeah.
12:52It's a really great place.
12:53Yeah.
12:54I can almost walk to the ski area, which would be a really cool experience for Remy.
13:00But I also think it would be very difficult to live this far away from town.
13:05And the price is really high.
13:07But I love the mountain feel of the home as a whole, really.
13:10That's right.
13:11There's positives and there's negatives, for sure.
13:13Mm-hmm.
13:14Jeff can find the good in any place.
13:16But really, we need to be realistic about what we need and what we want to spend our money on.
13:22So now we are in the very heart of the village.
13:26And that's really nice to see.
13:28Chantal can deliver the location Lauren wants.
13:31But the house might be a better fit for Jeff.
13:33Talk about cozy mountain feel.
13:35This is perfect.
13:37But after a long day of skiing, having to walk up three floors of stairs to be able to relax, that might get a little bit old.
13:43So there's no snow for the moment, but you can imagine how it looks in full winter.
13:53Great place to live, for sure.
13:55But it doesn't seem to be a place where a lot of Americans at least come.
14:00Sometimes we have English tourists or Italian or Spanish.
14:03Yeah, yeah.
14:04American people is very rare.
14:06With my job, Park City was really going to be the perfect stepping stone to be able to move to Europe.
14:12So how do you like being here?
14:15We asked Remy.
14:17And she said, oh, I love it.
14:19I just don't love the French part.
14:21She's at the perfect age to learn the language and adapt into the culture quickly.
14:27But we have to learn how to speak French.
14:29And we're working on it.
14:31We are.
14:32The sugar.
14:33The sugar.
14:34The sugar.
14:35The sugar.
14:36The sugar.
14:37The sugar.
14:38The sugar.
14:39The sugar.
14:40The sugar.
14:41The sugar.
14:42The sugar.
14:43On dirait deux chats qui vont sur le bar.
14:44To experience not only the language, but the culture, we're really, really excited to have
14:48the opportunity to be able to do this.
14:50It's just a little bit difficult for us and for Remy, too.
14:53These sounds do not come easily.
14:55No. No, not at all.
15:15So now we are in the very heart of the village.
15:18And that's really nice to see.
15:20You've got all the amenities around you.
15:23The school is not so far, too.
15:25Okay.
15:26It's a maximum five minutes.
15:27So it's very close.
15:28Yeah, very close.
15:29Okay.
15:30That's not far at all.
15:31It definitely has village town feel.
15:33Yeah, because people are living here all year long.
15:36Right.
15:37There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
15:40And we have three floors.
15:42It doesn't look that big from the outside, but that's surprising.
15:44That's great.
15:45But there is no outdoor space in this house.
15:48I'm more concerned that we have a nice outside space than having a huge indoor space.
15:55And what is the cost of this house?
15:57It's $1,900 a month.
15:59Okay.
16:00Yeah.
16:02Here's the entrance.
16:03Oh, wow.
16:04Okay.
16:05It's a really great space.
16:06But it's a long way up.
16:07It is a long way up.
16:08It is a long way up.
16:09After a long day of skiing, having to walk up three floors of stairs to be able to relax,
16:14that might get a little bit old.
16:15On this second floor, you will have four bedrooms, as well as two bathrooms.
16:22Okay.
16:23That's a really nice bathtub.
16:25Yeah.
16:26You'll be able to relax a little bit in there.
16:29This might be a nice space for Remy.
16:31And they still have a play area, too, which would be great.
16:34Absolutely.
16:35This is a great space.
16:37I mean, it could be a really nice main bedroom.
16:39Yeah, I think so.
16:40One of the two smaller bedrooms could be a really good home office, as well.
16:44I know one thing for Lauren that's really important is outdoor space, especially when Remy's involved,
16:50where we can just send her outside.
16:52It's a concern with this house, for sure.
16:55Here we are in the living room.
16:58Wow.
16:59Look at the space up here.
17:01It is big and open.
17:04There's a fireplace, which is great.
17:07I mean, talk about cozy mountain feel.
17:09This is perfect.
17:11Wow.
17:12And the kitchen is amazing.
17:13Modern kitchen with a lot of storage.
17:15It seems like a space that's great for adults.
17:18I'm not so sure having Remy in here, the fireplace here, all of the stairs here.
17:24She could learn.
17:25Yeah.
17:26The proximity to town, obviously, is great, but there's no outdoor space at all.
17:33Not at all.
17:34I don't want to be inside all the time.
17:35I'd like to have some space to be able to enjoy outside.
17:39Lauren will be the one that will be home most of the time.
17:42But I won't necessarily defer completely to her.
17:46The money and the cost, that's pretty serious.
17:49Not in my mind.
17:50Yes, of course.
17:51Yeah.
17:54How fast can you go?
17:55Let's see it.
17:56How fast.
17:57Let's see it.
17:58Whoa.
17:59I think at Remy's age, it's kind of hard to wrap your brain around what it means to move to another country.
18:05Until she gets here and does it, then it won't really make a lot of sense.
18:09Fitting in is a priority for everyone in the family.
18:12However, finding ski chalet vibes without breaking the bank or severing Lauren's connection to civilization is proving more uphill than downhill for these ski bums.
18:23The vintage house.
18:24The vintage house.
18:25It is close to school.
18:26It is close to school.
18:27And close to downtown.
18:29And that huge yard.
18:31That feels like you're in grandma's house.
18:34There's not much of a mountain chalet feel.
18:36It feels more like just an old French house.
18:38Yes.
18:40What about the house close to the ski resort?
18:42The renovated farmhouse.
18:44Super cozy.
18:45I could be in front of that fireplace all day, every day.
18:48But that kitchen would be really hard to cook in, and it was so far away.
18:52I just can't picture us being able to get into town easily or to school without having a car.
18:58The house in the center of the village.
19:00All the space we need.
19:02Plenty of bedrooms.
19:03But it doesn't feel like a kid-friendly house.
19:07I'm not so sure having the fireplace here, all of the stairs here.
19:11She could learn.
19:12Yeah.
19:15It's pretty clear which one I want to get rid of.
19:26The one that's on the outskirts of town?
19:28It's just too far away.
19:29For you, mostly being stuck to the shuttle schedule, that is an easy one to kind of eliminate.
19:36The price was also a lot higher than the others, too.
19:39It was.
19:40The vintage house.
19:41It had that huge outdoor space.
19:44It was really nice.
19:45There was a lot of space inside.
19:47Interesting style in the house.
19:49With the added expense of being able to heat such a huge house, that's something to consider as well.
19:54And then the one in the center of the village.
19:56Yes.
19:57Super convenient for you, being able to get around and walk places.
20:00It's tons of space.
20:02A lot of stairs.
20:03A lot of stairs.
20:04I think that I would feel pretty claustrophobic if I was there for a long time and I couldn't just go outside onto a deck or onto some area.
20:11Absolutely.
20:12I really like being able to walk into town maybe more than I like living in town.
20:19The vintage house.
20:21Chantal did say it's expensive to heat.
20:23A couple extra sweaters and blankets on the bed might be cozy.
20:26We have lots of blankets.
20:27Remy is going to love an outdoor space.
20:29Yeah.
20:30And if she's happy, I'm happy.
20:32I agree.
20:33Grandma's house.
20:34We're moving in.
20:35I can't wait.
20:36How was your day at school?
20:38Good.
20:39Yeah?
20:40I think we're adapting pretty well.
20:42Remy's happy.
20:43We're happy.
20:44Here comes another one.
20:45Pretty.
20:46Hop, hop.
20:47I have not skied in this town, so I'm excited to explore the mountain.
20:51Just hoping for a good winter.
20:52A lot of snow.
20:53We are hoping for snow.
20:55Oh my gosh.
20:56Oh, that's going to be a big, big mess.
20:58I think we need a little more flour.
21:00The house has worked out amazingly well.
21:03Ooh, look at that.
21:07It's probably more house than we might need, but having visitors come, a lot of room for
21:12Remy to be able to play is really, really great.
21:15There you go.
21:17Good job.
21:18Now that we're here, we can relax a little bit.
21:22And really enjoy where we are, which is the whole reason why we're here.
21:26Look at that.
21:27This was so fun.
