00:01Guess when this place was built.
00:03When?
00:041229.
00:05When Brad got accepted to Cork University.
00:07I'm always willing for it a bit.
00:09Yeah, that's true.
00:10His wife Donna and her daughter Mackenzie
00:12saw the opportunity to move to Ireland.
00:15Oh my God, you do have a mustache.
00:18We decided that we were going to have to be all in,
00:21and Donna really means it.
00:23I want a castle.
00:24This is exactly what I wanted.
00:26We're going from a dual income family
00:28to me being a student and you not having a job.
00:32We're going to have to, like, pinch pennies, I guess.
00:46Be careful.
00:48In our first year together,
00:49we went to seven different states
00:53because I love to travel,
00:55and sometimes I'll just pick up and go.
00:57I don't know, you know.
00:58And first class, too.
01:00I'm much more of a spender.
01:03What are the chances we get one of those houses?
01:06Zero.
01:07That's not nice.
01:08I'm a landscape architect.
01:10I've been working for 18 years in Chicago.
01:13I was, like, stuck in my career and just wanted to change.
01:16And I hadn't really seen the whole world very much,
01:18so it was something I wanted to do.
01:20I have a daughter.
01:22Her name is Mackenzie.
01:23She does have a spectrum disorder,
01:25but very high functioning.
01:26And she will be coming with us to Ireland.
01:29What do you think his name is?
01:31I'm thinking Misty, maybe.
01:33Ooh, Misty's a good one.
01:34Being an emergency room nurse,
01:36I was almost losing my humanity.
01:38You can only see so much trauma and see so many things
01:41before you're, like, numb to it.
01:44So I'm hoping to find my heart again.
01:48It's amazing.
01:49It is amazing.
01:50I got accepted to University College of Cork
01:53in planning and sustainable development.
01:55And so then we started making plans to move.
01:58We decided that we were going to have to be all in.
02:01We have 401ks that we're cashing out.
02:04We're selling our house, all three of our cars.
02:06So we're pretty much starting from scratch.
02:09We have a blended family.
02:11I have two dogs.
02:12She has two dogs.
02:13So we're the Brady Bunch of dogs.
02:15Exactly.
02:16And it won't be working.
02:17And she hasn't found a job yet.
02:19So I'm really worried about the money.
02:21Cork is the second largest city in Ireland.
02:23It's got loads of countryside.
02:25It's got beaches.
02:26The city itself is quite popular,
02:28but then obviously the price is quite high in the city.
02:30It's outside the city is where you kind of get a better feel
02:34and a better experience of Ireland.
02:36Mackenzie is autistic.
02:38And so she's anxious about certain things.
02:41So we need to keep in mind when we are looking at properties
02:45just to make sure that her needs are met as well.
02:48She's easy to get along with.
02:50She has a very kind heart, very accepting, and she's sweet.
02:54Yeah.
02:55I want something a lot more traditional,
02:57maybe a country cottage where I can embrace the Irish.
03:01Irish.
03:02I have a daughter, so she would need her own space, her own area.
03:06Okay.
03:07We have four dogs.
03:08Four dogs.
03:09Right.
03:10Oh.
03:11And we need a space for them to run around in.
03:13I would love, personally, a property that's standalone,
03:16maybe something a little more traditional.
03:18Okay.
03:19With three to four bedrooms, something with a garden.
03:22Do you want to stay in the city?
03:24Yes.
03:25Close to the university.
03:26Okay.
03:27And I'd rather kind of be a little bit further away.
03:29So tell me, how much have you got to spend?
03:31We're strictly going for 320.
03:33I'm willing to go a little bit higher than 320.
03:36Mm.
03:37320 is not going to get you a backyard, four bedrooms in the city.
03:42It's just not.
03:43So therefore, I think we need to cast the net out a little bit further,
03:46go outside of the city, and keep in mind that it has to have an easy commute
03:50or public transport.
03:52God, look how beautiful this is.
03:55I know.
03:56It's adorable.
03:57Yes.
03:58So the first property we're going to go see is in Carrig Tool.
04:00It's about 10 minutes on the train.
04:02That sounds great.
04:03Especially for traveling to the university.
04:05The reason we're going to Carrig Tool is basically because of the train.
04:09It's ID for bread and for a donut.
04:11It's got a back garden for the dogs.
04:13You can walk into the village.
04:15There's good amenities.
04:16It's a perfect property.
04:17So this is Carrig Tool.
04:19Oh.
04:20And is the train very loud or?
04:22No, no.
04:23It goes past, but there's only two carriages.
04:25So it's nice and quiet.
04:26Oh, okay.
04:27Nice.
04:28And this here is the house.
04:30It's big.
04:31Yeah.
04:32It's tall.
04:33It reminds me of something that I'd see in Chicago.
04:36It doesn't have that Irish charm that I was hoping for.
04:39Okay.
04:40And it's not stand alone.
04:42But the commute would be really nice.
04:44I mean, the train is like right there.
04:45Yeah.
04:46There's four bedrooms, three bathrooms for $345,000.
04:50Oh my gosh.
04:51That's a little above our price range.
04:52I think you'd be pleasantly surprised when you go inside.
04:55Okay.
04:56That's what we have to offer.
04:57So this is your entrance hall.
05:01And as you can see, it leads straight into your kitchen.
05:03So if you want to go in here.
05:04Oh, thank you.
05:05Okay.
05:06Thanks.
05:07It's small.
05:08It feels very isolated.
05:10I'm just imagining myself in here cooking.
05:13You know, I would be completely away from the family.
05:16But I'm really concerned about, like, there's no room for the table.
05:19There actually is a dining room next door.
05:21That's, we're going to go look at that next.
05:23So this is your living area slash dining.
05:27Okay.
05:28Nice.
05:29I like the fireplace.
05:30It's...
05:31It's got a lot more light in it, for sure.
05:34Is that the only place for a table?
05:38It is.
05:39It's hard to imagine us.
05:41Yeah, everybody coming out.
05:42We have to...
05:43Everybody sitting around here.
05:44Move it halfway out.
05:46Exactly.
05:47And with four dogs.
05:49Okay, well look, this is the selling point.
05:52This is where it all makes sense, in my opinion.
05:56I like the light.
05:58South facing.
05:59Four large picture windows.
06:01It's a big room.
06:02Brad's kind of enjoying this house a little bit more than Donna.
06:05Mainly because of the proximity to the city.
06:07Let's have a look at the garden and see what it's like for the four most important members of the family.
06:12So this is the back garden.
06:14Okay.
06:15I mean, I like the fence.
06:17Yeah, well fenced in.
06:18Low maintenance.
06:19Low maintenance.
06:20But it's a little on the smaller side.
06:23We would have to make a garden somewhere in this space.
06:26Okay, so clearly the garden really isn't up to scratch.
06:29But you've got to keep your minds open because we've got another two floors to go through in this property.
06:34Of course.
06:35I am concerned that Brad might like this house just because of the commute.
06:40But I'm really not feeling it.
06:42Oh, Mackenzie would love this.
06:44It's a nice big room.
06:46This is nice.
06:47She would be thrilled to have her own floor.
06:50She would.
06:51And this is perfect.
06:52This is only floor number one.
06:54We've got another floor to go.
06:55There's two rooms.
06:57Plenty of storage.
06:58Oh, there is plenty of storage.
07:00Plenty of light.
07:01Oh.
07:02Lots of light.
07:03Yeah.
07:04This is a big room.
07:05This is a big room.
07:06And this isn't the main bedroom.
07:07We still have to go see that.
07:09Oh.
07:10I like this room.
07:11Oh, yeah.
07:12It's very spacious.
07:13It's got a lot of character.
07:17And wonderful ensuite.
07:19Oh, yeah, it is.
07:20I love the waterfall showers.
07:22I wish I didn't have to spend as much money on this house because it's very close to the college.
07:27It's really important for me to not have a long commute.
07:29Mackenzie would like this house just because she could have her own floor.
07:33But I wanted something traditional and a beautiful landscape.
07:37And this, I'm not really feeling it.
07:40Don and Brad have to be a little bit more realistic about where that money is best being spent.
07:46And for me, that's outside of the city.
07:48Oh, my gosh.
07:49This is amazing.
07:50The kitchen's probably going to sway your mind on it's pretty much everything she's ever wanted.
07:54But it's way more than I want to spend.
07:56Hi, little.
08:01I'm probably most nervous about the cost.
08:05How much is everything going to be here?
08:08Moving from the U.S. to a new country is not cheap by any means.
08:13But I'm definitely excited about seeing, like, the countryside.
08:16It matches my wedding ring.
08:17It does.
08:18You know, my birthday's coming up.
08:20It is.
08:21I'm definitely the spender.
08:24He's more of the realist.
08:26I'm more of the dreamer.
08:27But when I was getting my master's degree, he was so supportive.
08:32He made sure that Mackenzie was taken care of and the dogs were taken care of.
08:37So I'm looking forward to him being able to experience the college life and I'm going to get a job.
08:44I'm an emergency room nurse, so I'm hoping to get into Cork Hospital, but if not, then I will do whatever I need to do in order to get a job.
08:56They're driving on the left side of the road.
08:58Okay, that is a little bit tricky.
09:01Yes.
09:02I'm going to take Donna and Brad to Market Town just outside of Cork City because of the train.
09:07It goes directly into Cork City.
09:09Commuting-wise, it's okay.
09:10They'll get in and out easy enough.
09:12For Donna, this property is a bit of a compromise.
09:14It's got the garden.
09:16It's a good size.
09:17The price is a little bit over, but for what it's offering, I think Brad's really going to like this.
09:21From Cork City, how far away is Mallow?
09:25You can hop on a train.
09:26You can be inside in the city in less than 25 minutes.
09:29So very, very commutable.
09:31That's good.
09:34I like the yellow.
09:35I was kind of hoping for a standalone house.
09:38Well, look, within the price bracket, this is what we have.
09:42And I know the commute is bad.
09:43Yeah.
09:44You know, it's 25 minutes on a train, but you're going to have to do some sort of commuting.
09:48Right, yeah.
09:49And this is a three bed, two and a half bath, end of terrace property for $340,000.
09:54Oh my goodness.
09:55That's way above.
09:56Is it?
09:57I believe so.
09:58Ah, well look, we've got a lot of positives as well.
10:01So there's going to be negatives and positives to every house.
10:03Sure.
10:04Come on in.
10:05Oh, I like the hardwood.
10:07Yeah, I like the hardwood as well.
10:09And it runs throughout the hallway and into this front room.
10:13I like the color.
10:14Yeah.
10:15I like the color.
10:16It matches the chairs actually.
10:18Do the chairs come with the property?
10:20Yes.
10:21Everything you see in this property is coming with it.
10:22I like the room.
10:23It's a nice room.
10:24And I do like the light coming through as well.
10:26Come on in and have a look at the kitchen.
10:28Sounds good.
10:29All right.
10:30And what a kitchen.
10:31What a room this is.
10:32Oh my gosh.
10:33This is amazing.
10:34Isn't it?
10:35It's super large.
10:36It's beautiful.
10:37I love the light.
10:39And the white cabinets.
10:40Yeah.
10:41Mm-hmm.
10:42The kitchen's probably going to sway your mind on it's pretty much everything she's ever wanted.
10:46But it's way more than I want to spend.
10:48I am loving this.
10:52Oh.
10:53I like the patio.
10:54Oh my gosh.
10:55This is a big space.
10:56All right.
10:57It's not as big as I would have hoped for like a countryside.
11:02There's plenty of space for the dogs.
11:04I feel kind of like we're right under everybody's nose.
11:07But Donna look.
11:08It's about community.
11:09You go out for a nice weekend.
11:11Somebody look after your dogs.
11:12That's what Ireland's about.
11:13I guess it's something I'd have to get used to.
11:16Yeah.
11:18The stairs are pretty narrow.
11:19I like that they're carpeted though.
11:21So this guys is your main bedroom.
11:23Again.
11:24Great size.
11:25It is a good size.
11:26Yeah.
11:27It's a nice looking bed.
11:28This is your ensuite toilet.
11:31Oh.
11:32Okay.
11:33It's a little bit snug, but we have our own shower.
11:37Yeah.
11:38That's true.
11:39Brad's probably worried about the commute and definitely worried about the money.
11:43But I know I'm going to get a job and money's not going to be an issue.
11:47So this is the main bathroom.
11:49Great size.
11:50Bath.
11:51Shower.
11:52I like the skylight.
11:54Yeah.
11:55I like the skylight too.
11:56Um.
11:57It's a little run down.
11:58Might need a little updating.
11:59All right.
12:00Let's move on.
12:01Oh my.
12:02This is color.
12:03This is color.
12:04This is color.
12:05But Mackenzie likes color, so maybe she'll like it.
12:09Yeah.
12:10I'm sure she will.
12:11But you've got some fitted wardrobes.
12:13Yeah.
12:14It's a nice size room for sure.
12:15It is.
12:16It is.
12:17This one is near the countryside, but also close to a town, so that might be a great compromise.
12:24I'm still worried about the commute.
12:25It's a little far out.
12:27And it's 20,000 over.
12:29You're going to have to do some sort of commute, Brad.
12:31And this isn't that bad because we're only 10 minutes away from the train.
12:34Yeah, that's fair.
12:36It's beautiful here.
12:37Donna has constantly said she wants to be in the country.
12:41Well, this house is country.
12:43This is exactly what I wanted.
12:45I'm not so sure the distance.
12:52You're so cute.
12:53I love your mustache.
12:55When I first started dating Brad, he was so nice.
12:59And I actually had a conversation with Mackenzie, and I was like, I don't know.
13:04He's just too nice.
13:05I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.
13:08And she told me, Mom, maybe he's a nice guy, and you need to let it happen.
13:13She was easy to get along with.
13:14We both like video games, so we have that in common.
13:17Look at that.
13:18It's a good mustache.
13:20In Chicago, Mackenzie had her own car.
13:23She went and visited her dad and family friends, and she had that independence.
13:30And here, I want her to be able to thrive and having a sense of independence.
13:37And it is something that we need to keep in mind when we are looking at properties.
13:42Donna has constantly said she wants to be in the country, that she wants views, that she wants fields and sheep.
13:48Well, this house is country.
13:51I don't have to be in the city in the morning, but this is really beautiful.
13:55And it's kind of hard to resist.
13:57The final property I'm bringing to you is a good bit outside.
14:01Now, this is real country country.
14:03This property, they may have to overcome with the isolation from Mackenzie.
14:06It's too far away from the train.
14:08They may have to get a second car.
14:09Brad's going to not be happy with the distance he has to travel.
14:12But then, he's all about the price.
14:14And this one is definitely under what they're willing to spend.
14:16But how far away is it?
14:1840 minutes from Cork City Drive, and it is rural.
14:25This is amazing.
14:27I love the views.
14:29This is way out here, though.
14:31It is so awesome.
14:32This is exactly what I wanted.
14:35So, this is a three-bedroom, three-bath, detached property for $310,000.
14:41It's within budget.
14:44It is within budget.
14:45This is absolutely spectacular.
14:48Let's get inside.
14:49So, this is the living room.
14:54Oh, my gosh.
14:56Look at the fireplace.
14:59It's a marble surround.
15:00Yeah, it's like a marble.
15:02This is beautiful.
15:04It's absolutely fantastic.
15:06Yeah, if it wasn't for the distance.
15:08Would you want to go have a look at the kitchen?
15:10Oh, wow.
15:11Oh.
15:12This kind of reminds me of my grandmother's house.
15:15I think it's pretty.
15:17This may be Donna's dream, but having long days through traffic would be not ideal.
15:23Does that lead to the back garden?
15:30Oh, my gosh.
15:32This is incredible.
15:34The dogs would love running around.
15:36Look at all of this space.
15:38Would I be mowing them constantly?
15:41It may need some maintenance.
15:44Brad is fearful only because of the maintenance of the garden and everything like that that it gives of Ireland.
15:53And this is the second living room, or the good room, as it's known in Ireland.
15:57Oh, what's a good room?
15:59A place that you use probably once a year.
16:02It's for the Christmas tree or when the local priest calls over.
16:05Oh, okay.
16:06Very nice.
16:07Looks like old dorm room furniture.
16:09I'm in love with the view, though.
16:13Oh, it's a nice bathroom with a nice bathtub.
16:16It is a nice bathtub.
16:17I love the tile.
16:18And then into the left, this could be the guest bedroom or an office.
16:23I love that built-in.
16:24Okay.
16:25And then in here, this could be Mackenzie's room.
16:27It's a big room.
16:29Oh, and the window out to the front garden is absolutely beautiful.
16:35It would be so nice to be here.
16:39Why don't we go in and have a look at the main bedroom?
16:41Let's do it.
16:43Nice bright room.
16:44It is a bright room.
16:46It is a tiny bit small.
16:48Mm.
16:50It's a bit of a dated en suite.
16:52Yeah, it is dated.
16:53We'd have to update it.
16:54Well, look, in fairness, though, with the price, I mean, that kind of gives you the room to update things if needed and, you know, change bathrooms.
17:03Because, like, you know, you're under what you were expecting to spend.
17:06Very true.
17:07Yeah, true.
17:08I have a great feeling about this house.
17:10I'm not so sure the distance.
17:12But is it just the distance, Brad?
17:14It's the distance.
17:15It's isolation.
17:16It's the fact that the furnishings are really old.
17:18We have a lot to discuss.
17:20Good.
17:21Yeah.
17:22Donna wants countryside, that Irish authentic feel, and Brad is happy to live close to the city on the budget they have to spend.
17:28So that's a bit of a challenge.
17:30You know my vote is for the country house.
17:32It's Ireland.
17:33It's screen space and backyard for the dogs.
17:37It's just not ideal for me or Mackenzie.
17:43Oh, what a cute Irish bar.
17:45Yeah, it's adorable.
17:46I'd describe myself as someone who's very overcautious, very overthinking things. Definitely a people pleaser. But we have $320,000 to spend and I don't want to go over that. So nice to go out to an Irish bar.
18:01Mm-hmm.
18:02I know there will be compromises. He's more of the realist. I'm more of the dreamer. But I get his opinions because working as a team is very important in our relationship.
18:14What do you think about the townhouse?
18:19Location-wise, it's nice to be near the town.
18:21Oh, it's small. I would be completely away from the family. Mackenzie could walk to the town center and find some friends.
18:31Well fenced in.
18:32But it's a little on the smaller side.
18:35Quick commute to the university.
18:37But it's over our budget. What did you think about the yellow house?
18:41It was spacious.
18:42Oh my gosh. This is amazing. Isn't it?
18:45It's super large.
18:46It's beautiful.
18:47The neighbors are all right on top of each other. I felt like in every window could see us.
18:53This is a big space. It's way too far away.
18:57But there is a commute train.
18:59That one's still a little bit over our budget.
19:01So what did you think about the country house?
19:04The distance was the biggest factor.
19:06It is so awesome. This is exactly what I wanted.
19:10That view and the yard was incredible.
19:14Yeah. Oh, wow. Kind of reminds me of my grandmother's house.
19:18But coming in under budget, we would have some of that money to be able to spend on the upgrades.
19:33To narrow it down, I think I can easily get rid of the townhome.
19:37Even though it's close in its location?
19:40The layout was weird and the backyard was non-existent pretty much.
19:46And it's 345, so.
19:48Okay. Even though the distance, it's way over our budget.
19:51Let's scratch it off.
19:53You know my vote is for the country house.
19:56I do.
19:57It's Ireland. It's standalone. Those views. The dogs could be running around. No worries whatsoever.
20:04But the distance, the isolation, not close to a town. It's just not ideal for me or Mackenzie.
20:11The yellow house. It's right by the train station.
20:14It's an easy commute into the university.
20:17And there's a town nearby that we can get food and stuff.
20:20You're the cautious one. The one who wants to save money.
20:23And this one's $20,000 over what we've wanted to spend.
20:27I know. But I think it's worth it based on the location and everything else.
20:31Even though I absolutely love the country house.
20:34Let's settle on this house for now.
20:36And maybe in five years, we can look somewhere else out in the country.
20:40Okay. That's fair.
20:42And I do love that kitchen. And I can definitely see myself cooking in there.
20:47So...
20:48Sláinte!
20:49I am loving it here.
20:54My favorite part of the house is this kitchen. I can cook and still be involved with the family.
21:01For me, I like the front room a lot. It's pretty spacious. It's really nice.
21:06Mackenzie's settling in. She loves Ireland. She's trying to find her space still. So we're trying to help her with that.
21:13I have found work. I'm in a private hospital. I'm middle management in an emergency department.
21:20The commute's working out okay. It's about a 15-minute walk to the train station and 25 minutes to Cork.
21:26It totally feels like an adventure every day.
21:30There's keep going.
