00:16And I'm just, like, crossing my fingers that they're going to be happy.

00:59I'm from Fairbanks, Alaska originally, like middle of Alaska.

01:02It wasn't rural, but it was a small town.

01:04And I'm from Australia originally.

01:06I got my love of traveling from my dad and mom.

01:10I grow up and I'm like, okay, I'm going to backpack through Alaska.

01:14And then eventually found Jay.

01:15We went out on the town in Anchorage.

01:17It turns out Natalie got bitten by a spider and her whole face swole up.

01:22But it went away, thank God, and formed a relationship, got married and all worked out.

01:29Too cold.

01:30I don't think it's going to be cold.

01:31Maybe it won't.

01:32So we have Chase, who's 13, and Hope's almost 11.

01:35And we moved all the time because we were a military family.

01:38We started our life in Texas and then back to Alaska, where I was a search and rescue

01:43helicopter pilot.

01:44And then the last five years of my career, I went down to Virginia.

01:47When we get a dog, we're coming here.

01:51Now that Jay has retired from the military, they have his pension and money from a home sale

01:56to use while exploring new career paths in Australia.

02:00My dad passed away in 2021.

02:02And we moved here to be closer to my mom and my family before the kids got too old.

02:08We looked at several towns in the Mid-North Coast, but something about Port Macquarie just fit the bill.

02:13Natalie's mom lives about three hours from Port Macquarie.

02:16I think she'll be staying for like one to three weeks at a time.

02:19But I've never lived in Port Macquarie before.

02:21I've visited a few times, and it was insanely gorgeous.

02:25Jay has always wanted to live on the beach.

02:28So it felt like, okay, this is the place.

02:30Being able to walk to the beach and enjoying the lifestyle here.

02:33It's so foreign.

02:34I think that's a huge draw for me.

02:36Port Macquarie, it's called the Mid-North Coast.

02:38We have some of the best weather in Australia, and you can be in the water year-round as well.

02:43We have great places to hike.

02:45Tourism is a big part of the industry here.

02:48Port Macquarie's population is about 86,000, and a lot of families are relocating here.

02:53So good houses.

02:54There will be plenty of other people looking at them as well.

02:57I actually moved here from North Carolina 12 years ago.

03:01So I know how it feels.

03:02Yeah, it's nerve-wracking.

03:04The kids' first reaction to moving to Australia, I think, was no.

03:08Or maybe you're joking, right?

03:09So the pressure's on.

03:11Getting the kids ready where we're all happy and where we're not financially stressing about things.

03:16I think that's going to take time.

03:18So what are you looking for?

03:20Definitely four bedrooms.

03:21Okay.

03:22The kids, they need their own space.

03:24And my mom, we want her to be out of visit and have her own space.

03:27Okay.

03:28And I'd really like a fixer-upper.

03:30I love seeing potential in a space.

03:32So something that's already got some character.

03:35Yeah.

03:36I'm okay with a little bit of work, but I don't want to put too much into it.

03:38I want something moving ready.

03:39Don't you want to feel like you're on holiday all the time and not grab a hammer and start bashing stuff down?

03:44Come on.

03:45I think for me, I want to be able to walk to the beach.

03:48This is like paradise for me.

03:49Definitely a place for the pool because it gets really hot here.

03:54And our son would love a yard.

03:55Just needs to have some space.

03:57That's kind of it.

03:58Followed extremely closely by a dog-friendly home.

04:03All right, so what is your budget?

04:05What are you guys wanting to invest in a property?

04:07About a mil.

04:08Okay.

04:09Like to be able to renovate and put money into it.

04:12So under that would be great.

04:14Okay.

04:15I'd be wanting to stretch a little bit if you found that perfect property.

04:17For the right place.

04:18Yeah.

04:19Their budget is a bit above the average, but they've gone through such a huge move.

04:22I think he's ready to find a home where everything's done.

04:25He can just move in and relax.

04:27But Natalie really wants to put her own stamp on it.

04:30We're heading to a house that's in an area called the Hastings.

04:33And Natalie can get her fixer upper fix.

04:36I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

04:38Hopefully Jay can be comfortable with that.

04:40This is a nice area.

04:44It's a long walk, but you're very close to two really popular beaches.

04:47No way.

04:48That's cool.

04:49And it's a good family neighborhood, and this is a very central neighborhood.

04:52This looks pretty dated.

04:53I don't know.

04:54When was this built?

04:56Like the 70s or 80s?

04:57But I love the long veranda.

05:00So from the get go, it feels really welcoming.

05:02This one's a four bedroom, two bathroom.

05:06Although it doesn't currently have a pool.

05:07With this huge front yard, I'd actually recommend putting a pool in right there.

05:12Just putting a nice fence around it.

05:13That's a bit of a concern because our future dog needs a good yard space.

05:17How much are they asking for the house?

05:19Well, Natalie, this is your fixer upper.

05:21So this one's 700.

05:22How much fixer upper are we talking about?

06:48I would rather spend a little more to get a house that's moving ready than get a cheaper house where it needs a lot of money to get moving ready and the paint that goes with it.

07:05I mean, it's outdated, but it's pretty clean.

07:07Another good thing is both bedrooms are pretty much the same size, so there shouldn't be any fighting amongst your kids.

07:18Big king-size main with, like, an enormous wall of built-ins there.

08:24And it was a lot of winter.

08:26Eight months of winter.

08:27Very dark.

08:28Very snowy.

08:29Very cold.

08:30But never had an opportunity to live near a warm beach or a warm climate.

08:33So I've always been drawn to that tropical feel.

08:35How fast do these run?

08:37Camels can get up to 70km an hour with a little bit of training.

08:40If they start to run, just hold on tight.

08:43I know how Jay is possibly feeling because I moved to the States to be with him.

08:47And it's daunting.

08:48Little day-to-day things can be a bit of a struggle.

08:51So I want Jay to be happy.

08:54Hey, you guys know why Wednesday is a camel's favorite day?

08:57Because it's hump day.

08:58Hump day!

08:59You knew it.

09:00Yeah.

09:01She knew the answer already.

09:02Whereas with the kids, I've never gone through what they're going through right now.

09:06And I feel really guilty about it.

09:08And I'm just, like, crossing my fingers that they're going to be happy.

09:11Because we're coming here so my mom can come and visit.

09:15We can be together.

09:16And Jay's, like, all for it.

09:18What do you call a three-hump camel?

09:23It is daunting for kids, I think, moving to such a new place, such a different place.

09:29I'm sure they're a bit anxious.

09:31But I think that they're going to love it.

09:33Doreen hopes to give Jay something more move-in ready.

09:36But to keep it affordable, they can't have it all.

09:39In this neighborhood, it's very family friendly.

09:41There's lots of kids.

09:44So what's the proximity to the beach?

09:45Oh, it's about a 10-minute drive.

09:47I mean, it's definitely biking distance as well.

09:49Just not walking distance.

09:50That could be a hassle.

09:51But it's four bedrooms, two bathrooms.

09:54It's got a space.

09:55And the pool.

09:56So that's done.

09:57Very dog friendly.

10:39And then everything will be on the one level for your mom.

10:42The space was really good, though, like, because there are stairs involved, and usually

10:46she's okay with that.

10:47Sometimes she's not.

10:48And just around the corner, there's a toilet here with an extra sink.

10:54And then just beyond it is the laundry.

10:56I really think there's room where you could add a shower, so you could have a full bathroom

11:01for your mom all on this level.

11:03We'd have to put a shower in.

11:06So that's got to be factored in, I guess?

11:07Yeah.

11:08And when it's already at the top of what we're willing to spend, not sure how we'd work with

11:13that.

11:16It's a beautiful, big, bright, open space.

11:23I kind of want to take a hammer to it right now, to be honest.

12:24and you just can't find that white one,

12:26it's a little heartbreaking.

12:28It's not just grabbing you and saying,

12:30this is your home.

12:31And it would be really nice to have that experience.

12:34We have saved the best for last.

12:47I think the pool's lovely.

12:54The house has most of what I want,

12:55but I can't walk to the beach,

12:57and it's a long bike ride,

12:58so that's something I've got to weigh in for sure.

13:01that had a little bit more character,

13:03was a little bit more unique,

13:04and this just seems a little, like, blech.

13:15So for all those things,

13:16you do have to pay a little bit extra.

13:20and my heart is in that home.

13:27It's been over 16 years

13:28since I've been living in Australia,

13:30and you become a little bit American,

13:33but it's really nice to be home.

13:35We love seeing the koala signs around town,

13:38slow down koalas about.

13:40We have the highest population of koalas

13:42on the east coast of Australia.

13:44Oh, cute.

13:46I would say Natalie, first and foremost,

13:49is an amazing partner and mother,

13:51and you're not afraid to take risks,

13:52which is awesome,

13:53because we're here in Port Macquarie, right?

13:55We could have played it safe,

13:56stayed in Virginia.

13:57Yeah.

13:58But we said, let's roll the dice

13:59and just see how this new adventure goes.

14:33be closer to my family.

14:35We just wanted to leave it all behind

14:36and just start over fresh.

14:38Part of Jay's fresh start

14:39is ditching his Alaskan roots

14:41to be close to the sand and surf,

14:43so Doreen is shooting for the moon for him,

14:46with a home that also has space ready to go

14:48for Natalie's mom.

14:49This property is in Port Macquarie's top suburb.

14:52It's walking distance to the beach,

14:54and it's perfectly renovated,

14:55so for all those things,

14:56you do have to pay a little bit extra.

14:58This neighborhood is called Lighthouse Beach.

15:01Very tropical.

15:02You can just walk out your backyard

15:04and be at Miner's Beach,

15:06and then you can walk out that way

15:08and you can be at Lighthouse Beach.

15:09Oh, no way. That is cool.

15:11This one's a four-bedroom, three-bathroom.

15:14And dog-friendly.

15:15Very dog-friendly.

15:16That's cool.

15:17It doesn't look like much of a fixer-upper.

16:48My mom can stay and be comfortable,

16:50but pushing the limit of what we want to spend,

17:56but I do think eventually you want to renovate a home

17:59that makes you feel like it's yours.

18:01And I just feel like it would feel like someone else's.

18:04So we'll definitely have to talk about that.

18:11I think Natalie, you know, having made the huge move back to Australia

18:18for her mom and for the family,

18:20she definitely feels the weight of that.

18:22But they are both going to have to compromise

18:24because finding the house that Natalie can feel

18:26she can put her personality into,

18:28and Jay not wanting to put time and work into a property

18:31just to keep everyone happy, including the kids.

18:34That's probably the main conflict.

18:35Um, the fixer-upper.

18:38I mean, it would be so comfortable financially

18:40to buy a place like that and still be able to afford

18:43to make it our own.

18:45But are you ready to take on that much renovation?

18:54This is, like, for mom.

20:15I want us to be able to enjoy this area instead of worrying about a mortgage that would maybe overextend us.

20:33I think I'd be willing to compromise and go with a bigger two-story brick home.

20:45We haven't found full-time work yet, but we're trying to settle down, see what comes our way.

20:50And we can ride our bikes to the beach, maybe 15, 20 minutes.

20:53So the proximity wasn't as big as I thought.
