00:00For the sake of your poor old dad, keep the door open three inches.
00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most depressing and
00:13cry-inducing moments in Stranger Things.
00:16Even in the end, he never stopped being Eddie.
00:23Number 20. Alexi's Death.
00:25Poor Alexi. All he wanted to do was watch cartoons and have fun at the fair.
00:30Unfortunately, he betrayed his native country and got a bullet in the abs for his efforts.
00:40So much for that. What makes Alexi's death so heartbreaking is the lead-up to it.
00:44He and Murray bond over Hop and Joyce's relationship drama, and he has an absolute
00:48blast at the fair, especially once he wins a Woody Woodpecker plushie.
00:52Combine that with his love for cherry slushies, and you realize that Alexi has the joy and
01:02innocence of a child. You could probably tell that his demise was coming, but that doesn't
01:06make it any easier to stomach.
01:09Alexi!
01:11Oh my god.
01:13Number 19. Dustin is left out at the dance.
01:17Girls this age are dumb, but give him a few years, no way's up.
01:24Poor Dustin. After everything he's been through, Dart, the creepy tunnels, the demodogs, he just
01:30wants one normal moment that a kid his age should get. In the season 2 finale, he shows
01:36up to the snowball looking sharp, curls styled, Farrah Fawcett spray in full effect, and then
01:42no one wants to dance with him. He watches Lucas go off with Max, and he's rejected again
01:47and again, forcing him to just stand there by himself. It's absolutely heartbreaking.
01:52Luckily, Nancy steps in to save him, showing him kindness when he needs it most. It's sad,
01:57yes, but it's also a beautiful moment for Nancy, who completes a character arc of sorts
02:02by finally showing Dustin some kindness.
02:05Hey, Nancy, there's a slice left if you want it. Sausage and pepperoni.
02:10Hold on.
02:15Number 18. Karen talks to Nancy.
02:18Maybe I just don't want to admit that I'm wrong, because if I'm wrong, then you're what
02:24everyone thinks you are. Just a kid who has no idea what she's doing.
02:28Stranger Things has some fantastic monsters and epic storytelling, but it has always maintained
02:34a beating heart through its beautiful relationships. In season 3, Nancy is fired for overstepping
02:40at the newspaper, and she does something that no teenager ever wants to do. She opens up to
02:45her mother. Karen reciprocates with her own vulnerability, talking about what it's like
02:49to be stuck, to lose your sense of self, and to feel like you've missed your chance. It's
02:54a quiet scene. No demogorgons, no upside down, just a mom and her struggling daughter trying
02:59to connect through their shared humanity. And she also proves to be an insanely awesome mom,
03:05giving Nancy the pep talk she desperately needed in that moment of pain.
03:09Think you were swapped in the hospital to tell you the truth? No. I get it from you, Mom. I get
03:22it from you. Well, wherever you get it from, I'm proud of you. Proud of me for getting fired?
03:36That you stood up for yourself. Number 17. Eleven and Hopper's talk in the car.
03:44Who's Sarah? Sarah. Sarah's my girl. She's my little girl. After a season of tension and explosive
03:59anger, it was nice to see Hopper and Eleven finally share a moment of tenderness. It comes
04:05in the season 2 finale, after Eleven has returned from her little punk foray in Chicago. David Harbour
04:10absolutely shines here, as Hopper shows a rare moment of tenderness and finally allows Eleven
04:16inside, probably for the first time ever. He apologizes for his past behavior, admits his
04:22insecurities, and even reveals the existence of Sarah. The scene provides viewers with that unique
04:27Stranger Things concoction of heart and devastation, and the tears can't help but flow.
04:32I'm so sorry for everything. I could be so, so... Stupid. Yeah. Stupid.
04:47Number 16. Mike and Hopper's confrontation. The final episode of season 2 is just a whirlwind
04:54of emotions. First, we get the touching reunion of Mike and Eleven, a moment that we'd been eagerly
04:59awaiting all season. I never gave up on you. I called you every night. Every night for 353 days.
05:09This leads to an explosive and physical confrontation between Mike and Hopper, which culminates in Mike
05:15crying in Hopper's arms. It's devastating to see Mike in such a distressed state, and it once again
05:21reinforces what kind of a father figure Hopper is to these children. You've been hiding here this
05:26whole time. Hey, hey. Let's talk. They may not always agree with his methods, but he's always
05:33there for them in the end. It's moments like these that elevate Stranger Things above the competition.
05:38Liar! Liar! Liar! Liar! It's okay. Stop it. Stop it. Liar! Liar!
05:45Number 15. Will's death. We imagine that this is the moment that hooked a lot of viewers.
05:50Oh God, please tell me it's not the kid. The third episode ends in spectacular and heartbreaking fashion
05:56as Will's corpse is fished from the quarry, while a cover of David Bowie's Heroes somberly plays in
06:02the background. It was a huge and greatly unexpected curveball that both broke our hearts and made us
06:08respect the show for its penchant to take major narrative risks. It's not Will. It can't be.
06:14Of course, Will didn't actually die, but hey, we didn't know that at the time.
06:18This scene also gave us the great funeral sequence, and while that later scene was quite
06:28sad as well, it was alleviated by the knowledge that Will wasn't actually dead.
06:33Number 14. I felt it everywhere. This scene is basically every parent's worst nightmare.
06:39In it, Will tells Joyce about his experiences with the Mind Flayer, how he felt to take control of him,
06:44and how he just wants the entire thing to be over. It's a gut-wrenching scene that makes us feel
06:53terrible for both Joyce and Will, particularly Will, and it proved that Noah Schnapp was one of
06:58the most talented child actors in the biz. He deserved all the awards for this sequence alone,
07:12because he tugged at her heartstrings like no other.
07:14I felt it everywhere. Everywhere. I still feel it. I just want this to be over.
07:26Number 13. Talking to Will in the shed.
07:29But all you wanted to do was straw with all your new colors, and you drew this big spaceship.
07:40But it wasn't from a movie. It was your spaceship. A rainbow ship. That's what you called it.
07:46Joyce Byers has been through hell trying to save her son, and in the season two finale,
07:51she's pushed to her emotional breaking point. Can't say we blame her. As the Mind Flayer takes over
07:56Will's body and mind, Joyce tries desperately to reach the sun inside. She and the gang get
08:02together in the buyer's shed, and try to reach Will's humanity by reminiscing about the good
08:07memories, and telling him what an awesome kid he is. Their love for this kid is truly unshakable,
08:13and watching everyone share their heartfelt stories is a moment of tear-inducing beauty.
08:17I just walked up to you, and I asked. I asked if you wanted to be my friend.
08:24And you said yes. You said yes.
08:34It was the best thing I've ever done.
08:37Number 12. Barb's death.
08:39All memeing aside, Barb's death is actually quite horrific. First, she's ignored and laughed at
08:45during Steve's party. Then she's blown off by Nancy, who tells her to go home so she can sleep
08:50with Steve. And finally, as she's moping by the pool, she's devoured by a monster from another dimension.
09:00Now, that is not a good way to go out.
09:07Just to rub salt in the wound, we also see Barb's corpse in the Upside Down,
09:11and it is not a pretty sight. Many people can see themselves in Barb,
09:15and her death was both horrifying and upsetting to witness. There is a reason she became such a
09:21popular meme.
09:22Is Barb okay? Is she okay?
09:30Number 11. Eleven watches Papa die.
09:35I want you to know. I'm proud of you. So very proud.
09:48Dr. Brenner, or Papa, as Eleven calls him, is one of the series' most complicated figures,
09:54and our feelings for his demise are equally complicated. When he's fatally shot while
09:58helping Eleven escape the Nevada lab, she's left torn between love for her father figure and
10:03resentment for everything he did and everything he represents. She holds his hand as he dies,
10:08but she also refuses to give him the forgiveness and understanding that he so desperately craves.
10:13She says goodbye to her Papa, but she's really saying goodbye to her demons and her life as Eleven.
10:17Number 10. Billy's surfing flashback.
10:34Did you see that?
10:35Yeah, I saw that.
10:37That was at least seven feet.
10:38I don't know what it was, but it almost gave me a heart attack.
10:41Ten more minutes?
10:42Billy Hargrove wasn't exactly a hero for most of his time on Stranger Things,
10:46but this scene gave us a look behind his anger. When he's possessed by the mind flayer,
10:51Eleven enters his mind, and what she finds is devastating. While inside,
10:55she comes across a core memory of Billy as a young boy,
10:58surfing in the California ocean while his loving mother watches on proudly. The soft light,
11:03the sound of waves, and Billy's face gives us all we need. This is when Billy was happy.
11:08Of course, we soon see what happened to result in the Billy of 1984. It doesn't redeem the abusive
11:14teen, but it at least provides a moment of sympathy.
11:17She was pretty.
11:25She was really pretty.
11:29And you, you were happy.
11:32Number 9. Goodbye Mike.
11:35We can say this with confidence. The crew of Stranger Things knows how to craft a season
11:39finale. By the end of the first season, we were left in absolute tatters as Eleven sacrificed
11:45herself for Mike and the gang. Goodbye, Mike.
11:53The scene is beautifully shot and tailored for maximum emotional impact, including the use of
11:58slow motion, lingering shots of heartbroken faces, and a beautiful and melancholic score.
12:03It was a tragic culmination of both the main story and the Mike and Eleven subplot,
12:13and it served as a beautiful ending to a beautiful season.
12:16It's amazing what the writers were able to do with Billy and Max in Season 3.
12:37It's amazing what the writers were able to do with Billy and Max in Season 3.
12:47They were introduced in Season 2, and it wasn't exactly a smooth transition.
12:51Many people found their presence jarring and needless, and they did little throughout
12:55the season to warrant their introductions.
12:57That all changed in Season 3, when Billy did a Steve-esque 180, and became a fan favorite.
13:03His sacrifice in the mall is one of the season's standout moments, and his apology to Max is
13:08simply beautiful.
13:13We never expected to cry over Billy of all characters, but such surprises are what you
13:18get with Stranger Things.
13:19Number 7 Hopper's Death
13:31And the final episode of Season 3 really destroyed us.
13:35Everything was well and good, and exciting, until Hopper found himself trapped by the door
13:39opening machine.
13:41Accepting his fate, he gives Joyce a poignant nod of approval, before she flips the switches
13:46and vaporizes everyone in the gate room.
13:52It was an agonizing scene in the moment, as both we and Joyce simultaneously understand
14:01what Hopper is asking her to do, and what the consequences of flipping that switch would
14:06be.
14:07Luckily, this wasn't the end for Hopper, but even knowing what we do now, we still can't
14:11stop the tears from flowing.
14:12Number 6 Bob's Sacrifice
14:21While Billy and Max were considered a dud by some, Bob was welcomed by the Stranger Things
14:26fanbase.
14:27And let's be serious, that was mostly due to Sean Astin.
14:30Tell Jonathan not to pick anything scary.
14:32How can you not love that adorable man?
14:37Unfortunately, he was ripped to shreds by the demodogs, so that broke our hearts into
14:41a million pieces.
14:48The sequence was surprisingly bloody and graphic, which of course made it that much more difficult
14:53to watch and experience.
14:54The man was a saint, and he most definitely did not deserve to go out in such a painful
14:59and violent manner.
15:01Number 5 Dustin Tells Eddie's Uncle About His Death
15:04My nephew is innocent, but he's still missing.
15:09I'll put up as many posters as I need till he's found.
15:12Eddie Munson's death wrecked us all.
15:14We'll get to that in a moment, don't you worry.
15:16But what makes his death even sadder is the fact that Hawkins doesn't mourn him.
15:20Not only do they not mourn him, but they vilify him, falsely believing that he was the
15:24leader of some type of satanic death cult.
15:26But there's one person who knows the truth, and that's Eddie's Uncle Wayne.
15:30Dustin tells Wayne that Eddie isn't actually missing, he's dead.
15:34The truth understandably ruins Wayne, but at least it provides some type of closure.
15:39The scene is fraught with emotion, giving Gaten Matarazzo his time to shine as a dramatic
15:44actor.
15:45And what a job he did.
15:46He fought and died to protect this town.
15:51This town that hated him.
15:56He isn't just innocent, Mr. Munson, he's a hero.
16:05Number 4.
16:06The Sarah Flashbacks
16:06Before he was the lovable, grumpy sheriff of Hawkins, Jim Hopper was a loving father.
16:25In a fantastic bit of economic storytelling, we see the entire tragic story of his daughter,
16:30Sarah, through brief but traumatic flashbacks.
16:32We see a variety of images that tell us all we need to know.
16:34Hopper reads to her in the hospital bed.
16:35He cries in the stairwell, probably unable to cry in front of others, but doing so in
16:39a moment of privacy.
16:40And he holds his partner as Sarah dies in front of them.
16:42And most of this plays out while he's saving Will, a spiritual redemption of sorts as he
16:56saves another kid from death, being unable to save his own.
16:59Number 3.
17:18Eddie's Death
17:20He didn't run this time.
17:33At least he can say that.
17:34In one of the most heroic and heartbreaking moments of the entire series, Eddie Munson
17:39sacrifices himself in the Upside Down to draw the attention of the demobats and buy his friends
17:43more time.
17:44Unfortunately, the bats swarm him and rip him to pieces, and he dies in Dustin's arms,
17:50still cracking jokes.
17:51It's a classic tragedy.
17:53The outcast who finally proves his worth to the world, only to die a misunderstood hero.
17:58And what a moment this was for both Joseph Quinn and Gaetan Matarazzo, both of whom give
18:03excellent performances.
18:05Eddie.
18:08Eddie.
18:10Eddie.
18:12Eddie.
18:13Eddie.
18:14Eddie.
18:15Eddie.
18:16Eddie.
18:19Eddie.
18:20Number 2.
18:22Hopper's Speech
18:23What is that?
18:25Oh.
18:26It's the speech Hop wrote for you and Mike.
18:33Speech.
18:34Was this a fantastic way to end the season or what?
18:37Hopper's Speech is easily one of the show's most upsetting sequences.
18:40Not only in regard to the words themselves, but the way in which they're mirrored and referenced
18:44on the screen through the brilliant editing.
18:46I know this is a difficult conversation, but I care about you both very much.
18:51And I know that you care about each other very much, and that's why it's important
18:56that we set these boundaries moving forwards.
18:58The speech serves as a touching summation of the show's themes, regarding growing up and
19:03moving on, and it's contrasted with scenes of the buyers moving out of Hawkins.
19:07For the first time in a long time, I started to feel things again.
19:15It's such a perfect sequence that it could've served as the series finale, a fitting send-off
19:20for Hopper, and a show based around nostalgia and looking back at times gone by.
19:25Keep on growing up, kid.
19:27Don't let me stop you.
19:30Make mistakes.
19:31Learn from all.
19:33And when life hurts you, because it will, remember the hurt.
19:40The hurt is good.

19:58Number one, Max's death.
20:01I'm so scared.
20:02I'm so scared.
20:03I'm so scared.
20:04I know.
20:05I know.
20:06I know.
20:07I know.
20:08I know.
20:09I know.
20:10Hey, I'm gonna die.
20:11I'm not ready.
20:12You're not gonna die.
20:13Please just hang on.
20:14The running up that hill sequence is iconic, and it absolutely made us cry.
20:15But that's more uplifting than sad.
20:16You know what's sad?
20:17Her death.
20:18When Max briefly dies in Lucas's arms, we are left complete blubbering messes thanks
20:23to the absolutely insane performances of Caleb McLaughlin and Sadie Sink.
20:27After a season of depression and total detachment, Max finally learns the value of life and begs
20:32Lucas not to let her go.
20:34Lucas, meanwhile, is completely powerless as his ex-girlfriend dies in his arms.
20:39At one point, even screaming for his sister Erica.
20:42We can't even say that without tearing up a little.
20:45They really didn't have to go this hard.
20:47No.
20:48Stay with me, Max.
20:49Hang on.
20:50Hang on.
20:51Just hang on.
20:52Shit.
20:53I never got help.
20:55Which scene had you blubbering?
20:57Let us know in the comments.
20:59口 Revenant.
21:00Hang on.
21:01Hurry up.
21:02I'm sorry.
21:03Hear.
21:04We never got help.
21:05We'll see you again later.
21:06Where we are.
21:07How do we move?
21:08How do we move?
21:09How do we move?
21:10Move.
21:11How do we move?
21:12How do we move?
21:13How do we move?
21:14To testify?
21:15How do we move?
21:16How do we move?
