00:00No, it'll be okay. Stay with us. It'll be okay.
00:03I have to go away.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're counting down our picks for the most impactful and or meaningful goodbyes.
00:12Spoilers ahead for the following films.
00:15Assemble.
00:16No!
00:19Number 20, Harry, Armageddon.
00:22I know, Harry. I'll try not to disappoint you.
00:30Take care of yourself, kid.
00:32A group of tradesmen become astronauts, risking their lives to save the world from a deadly asteroid.
00:38Harry Stamper is one of them, and he proves to be the most heroic of all.
00:42Taking one giant leap for mankind, the oil driller makes the ultimate sacrifice in space.
00:47The bomb needs one brave soul to set it off.
00:49Stamper doesn't second-guess the opportunity, making his future son-in-law go home alive.
00:54It's my turn now.
00:57Harry! Harry!
01:00You can't do this to me!
01:03It's my girl!
01:05You're gonna take care of my little girl now.
01:07This ridiculous movie tugs at your heartstring despite its unbelievable setting.
01:11Bruce Willis' character does it all to save his daughter and the Earth.
01:15You take care of yourself.
01:16Harry!
01:17I love you, Harry!
01:18Harry! I love you!
01:20Don't marry me!
01:21I love you, Harry!
01:22Don't do this, Harry!
01:23Number 19, Will.
01:25Pirates of the Caribbean at World's End.
01:27As each sequel became bigger and crazier, the franchise built to this thrilling moment.
01:41Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, and Will Turner find themselves in a fight with Davey Jones.
01:46To make things more complicated, the heroes have to go after the villain's heart.
01:50Turner steps up to the plate and makes the climatic move.
01:53Not only does he defeat Jones, he dooms himself to a life at sea.
02:05The humble blacksmith makes a sacrifice despite his possible future with Swann.
02:09With an exciting finish, at World's End also provides a surprisingly bittersweet ending.
02:13It just goes to show that even pirates can do the right thing.
02:18Once is quite enough.
02:23Number 18, Yondu, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
02:31He might not be Peter Quill's father, but Yondu Undanta helped raise the hero as a Ravager.
02:37This makes Undanta's exit all the more moving.
02:39Despite his harder edge, the paternal figure wants what's best for Quill.
02:43The helpful ally saves Star-Lord from a bomb blast and flies them into space.
02:48You may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy.
02:53Only one can live, making this a one-way flight for the mentor character.
02:57Michael Rooker's character proves to himself, his adoptive son, and the audience that he's
03:02much better than the all-powerful Ego.
03:04His meaningful and sentimental send-off shows that his sacrifice speaks volumes.
03:09I'm sorry I didn't do none of it right.
03:12I'm damn lucky you're my boy.
03:19What?
03:19Number 17, Father Damien Karras, The Exorcist.
03:23He got to himself and a bomb he was become his dude.
03:27And when he punches it, he is so good.
03:32This classic horror tale follows priests as they try to help a possessed girl.
03:36Their attempts at an exorcism force them to confront their beliefs,
03:39with Father Damien Karras choosing to put his life on the line.
03:42He pleads with the demon to make an existential swap,
03:45and it's a decision that nobody would take lightly.
03:48Come into me!
03:50God damn you!
03:51Take me!
03:53Take me!
03:55With Karras under the evil spell, the young Reagan is back to normal.
03:58The hero then leaps out a window in his compromised state.
04:01Mortally wounded, the man hopefully dies knowing what he's done to help.
04:05It's an amazing finale that shows the lengths someone will go to defeat an otherworldly presence.
04:21Number 16, Wicked, District 9.
04:23It's definitely alien, but it's not a weapon.
04:28But I don't trust it.
04:30You know, I don't trust anything that-
04:31You're right, Wicked.
04:38In the beginning, he's a company man that follows orders.
04:41Wicked's Van D. Mira doesn't care about the alien population at all.
04:44Once he's infected and starts to transform, he starts to change his tool.
04:48He then becomes an unlikely hero as he helps Christopher Johnson and his son.
04:52This involves manning an exosuit and battling mercenaries.
04:55Hold your fire! Hold your fire and keep your positions!
05:02He fends them off while his allies escape with some help from other unexpected friends.
05:06The destructive and violent scene is full of serious danger.
05:10While he survives, his fate is ultimately in question as he awaits his friend's return.
05:14We can only hope that someone comes back for him considering his incredible feat.
05:18The more zany conspiracy theories state that he's being captured by M&U or by another government
05:26or by perhaps some shady government agency and is actually being held in captivity.
05:32Number 15, NUX, Mad Max, Fury Road.
05:40I live! I die! I live again!
05:43As one of the war boys, this guy is basically programmed to do as he's told.
05:47This makes his turn into a hero all that more surprising.
05:50Chased by a Morten Joe and his followers, the main group deal with some serious struggles.
05:55When you're across safe, I'll jam the throttle and follow you.
05:59Come on!
06:01Hurry! We're nearly at the pass!
06:03NUX eventually crashes and blocks the incoming enemies.
06:06This proves that he's courageous after all, but for a much better cause.
06:10It's also a scene that gives Max and Furiosa another chance.
06:14Striking a blow against the villains, this sacrifice offers the others serious hope.
06:18It's also heartbreaking to watch such a transformative character die in this way.
06:37Number 14, Russell Cassie, Independence Day.
06:39Just what in the hell do you think you're doing?
06:45It's the wrong field, you idiot.
06:48Lucas' farm's on the other side of town.
06:53Are you sure?
06:54Who's going to take out the alien threat?
06:57Pilot Russell Cassie might seem crazy at first, but he's also braver than most.
07:01The exciting climax finds the forces of Earth fighting against the extraterrestrial threat.
07:06Cassie then has the opportunity to dish out a devastating blow.
07:09By flying his plane into the ship, he causes a huge explosion that sends the enemies packing.
07:14Tell my children, I love them very much.
07:18He ends up being one of the most consequential characters in the entire story.
07:22While Independence Day is full of heroic people, you could make an argument that this one does the most damage.
07:28Hello boys, I'm back!
07:40Number 13, basically everyone.
07:43Rogue One, A Star Wars Story.
07:45She did it.
07:46It's rare in a Star Wars movie to see this kind of destruction.
07:57The heroes of Rogue One want the plans for the Death Star, knowing they might not make it out alive.
08:02They all go to extraordinary lengths to help the Rebel Alliance.
08:06As Andor and Urso send away the important data, they die in a massive Empire strike.
08:11The heroes do everything for the good of the galaxy.
08:22Risking everything for a good cause, the brave group proved that this revolution is built upon sacrifice.
08:28Thankfully for fans, they get to spend more time with some of these people on the TV show.
08:32Your Highness, the transmission we received.
08:37What is it they've sent us?
08:40Hope.
08:47Number 12, Bing Bong, Inside Out.
08:49Joy was stuck down here.
08:52We might as well be on another planet.
08:54Like clockwork, Pixar makes us cry once again.
08:58This time, they create the imaginary friend Bing Bong.
09:01In order for Joy to help Riley, she needs help from this elephant.
09:05This all means that the host must accept sadness and leave some of her childhood in the memory dump.
09:09The movie then delivers a blow to our inner kid,
09:12showing the unconditional love the character has for his old friend.
09:28It's a sudden disappearance that leaves you feeling especially nostalgic.
09:36While he might be gone, the road certainly leaves a mark on this emotional journey.
09:40You made it!
09:41Ha ha!
09:42Ha ha ha!
09:43Go!
09:44Go save Riley!
09:45Ha ha ha!
09:48Take her to the moon for me.
09:51Okay?
09:51Number 11, Jean Grey, X2.
10:00This is the only way.
10:02In order for the X-Men to fly from Stryker's base,
10:04they need some clearance for their X-Jet.
10:06The powerful Jean Grey then shows off the true potential of her abilities.
10:10She's able to manipulate the incoming water, helping her team to safety.
10:14She's able to escape from Stryker's base, she's able to escape from Stryker's base.
10:25Grey's love for her friends seems to know no bounds here.
10:28Risking her own death by drowning,
10:30the hero shows that she can't stand by while her allies face almost certain doom.
10:34It's an impactful scene that seems biblical in terms of scale and decisive action.
10:38Even if she rises again as the phoenix, this feels like a permanent change to this character's future.
10:43Gene?
10:46Scott?
10:51How?
10:51Number 10, Gorman and Vasquez, Aliens.
11:01When you start watching a movie from the Alien franchise,
11:04you know that most people aren't going to make it out alive.
11:07These two soldiers are no different.
11:09Facing the fearsome xenomorphs, this pair makes the permanent statement.
11:12The resulting blast takes out a few enemies and buys the remaining heroes some time.
11:19It might be an action cliché, but it certainly feels like an important gesture here.
11:23The creepy aliens force the crew to give it their all.
11:25Fueled by some serious explosives, this sacrifice packs a huge punch.
11:30It doesn't quite get the job done, but it does lead indirectly to Ripley's last battle.
11:34The brutal scenes before it still aren't lost in the audience.
11:37You always were an asshole, Gorman.
11:55Number 9, Katniss, The Hunger Games.
11:57She thinks she's saving her sister from certain death, but she's really starting a revolution.
12:10Katniss Everdeen takes the place of her sister Primrose in The Hunger Games.
12:14Volunteering as tribute, the hero becomes something more than anyone could have imagined.
12:18She puts her life on the line and ends up going all the way.
12:21Prim!
12:24I volunteer!
12:25I volunteer!
12:27I volunteer as tribute.
12:31I believe we have a volunteer.
12:33Everdeen is strong-willed, skilled with the bow, and a perfect candidate for the competition.
12:38The protagonist later proves to be a pivotal force in fighting the government.
12:41With her fairness and conviction, The Unexpected Warrior shows what it takes to help out a sibling.
12:46Let's have a big hand for our very first volunteer, Katniss Everdeen.
13:02Number 8, James Bond, No Time to Die.
13:06You made me do this, you see.
13:11This was your choice.
13:16Some fans thought it would never happen.
13:18No Time to Die brings Daniel Craig's tenure to an end, while also saying goodbye to James Bond.
13:23The hero finds himself infected with nanobots on a villain's island.
13:26If he leaves, the secret agent might endanger his loved ones.
13:30Bond then chooses to stay and let the incoming missiles take him out.
13:33It's a bold choice, but one that's necessary in order to protect his partner and child.
13:37You have all the time in the world.
13:41The twist also shows that the man isn't indestructible after all.
13:53People will have to wait for a reboot to see him again, but nobody will forget this ending anytime soon.
13:58Number 7, Steve Rogers, Captain America The First Avenger.
14:12Not my future!
14:14What have you done?
14:32With an experimental procedure, Steve Rogers transforms into a patriotic hero.
14:36His fight against Red Skull leads to an exciting plane scene.
14:40Everything comes down to one decision, with the title character having to save the day once more.
14:45Give me your coordinates, I'll find you a safe landing site.
14:48There's not going to be a safe landing, but I can try and force it down.
14:52I'll get Howard on the line, he'll know what to do.
14:54The fully loaded aircraft possesses a threat with its precious cargo.
14:58Rogers decides to down the vehicle, selling his fate in a frozen tundra.
15:02It's just one in a long line of heroic deeds from The First Avenger.
15:05Even if he ends up coming back, he puts in a valiant effort to help out mankind.
15:10The protagonist also raises the bar for his allies.
15:14We'll have the band play something slow.
15:19I'd hate to step on your-
15:24Steve?
15:24He might be all clinks and clanks, but the title character still has a heart.
15:46The Iron Giant follows the unlikely friendship between boy and machine.
15:50In the end, the latter takes care of a missile headed for Rockwell.
15:53The explosive could have taken out a whole bunch of people otherwise.
15:57Thankfully for everyone nearby, the giant has a selfless side and can act at a moment's notice.
16:07I love you.
16:16The sacrificial gesture speaks volumes about the robot surprising humanity.
16:20There's hope in the end that the character will inevitably return.
16:23Devastating the other heroes, this choice still hits home.
16:26Speaker Man
16:38Number 5, Rick Contablanca.
16:42He's looking at you kid.
16:43He's maybe the greatest anti-hero in Hollywood history.
16:49You love him and sometimes you hate him, but Rick Blaine knows what he must do.
16:53He takes his old flame Elsa Lunn to the airport and sends her away.
16:57Rather than making a selfish move, the man risks his own neck to save someone else.
17:02He also knows that this will prevent the possibility of a fairytale ending.
17:06As Major Strasser comes by, Blaine also needs to shoot his way out.
17:10The character isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty in order to save the day.
17:24Casablanca wouldn't be the same without this finale, captivating audiences with the last choice.
17:29It might be a good idea for you to disappear from Casablanca for a while.
17:33There's a free French garrison over at Brazzaville.
17:36I could be induced to arrange a passage.
17:38My letter of transit?
17:40I could use a trip.
17:41Number 4, Doctor Octopus, Spider-Man 2.
17:44Let's see you scurry out of this.
17:47With his mechanized arms, Doctor Otto Octavius wreaks havoc in this thrilling sequel.
18:00His experimental machine becomes the focus of the final fight.
18:03When he can't control it anymore, the villain realizes what he must do to his own technology.
18:08He puts aside his beef with Spider-Man and chooses to save the city.
18:11The river.
18:15Drown it.
18:17I'll do it.
18:27After his evil arc, the man proves he's still got some good left in him.
18:31Octavius destroys everything, lets his rival escape, and loses his life in the process.
18:36It's quite the reversal for a complicated guy fueled by grief and vengeance.
18:47The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.
19:06For many sci-fi fans, this one might still hit close to home.
19:10The famed Vulcan makes the ultimate sacrifice to save his fellow crew members.
19:14Following Khan's reappearance, the Enterprise comes to grips with advanced technology and their mortality.
19:19Spock then chooses to sacrifice himself.
19:30It's a startling decision that everyone takes hard, but Kirk especially struggles to understand it.
19:35Few deaths are as impactful in that genre.
19:37He might be more closed off in terms of emotions, but the captain knows that the benefits outweigh the cost.
19:43It's still an effective ending regardless of the sequel.
19:582. Tony Stark – Avengers Endgame
20:13After all the films before it, Avengers Endgame brought an era of Marvel stories to a triumphant close.
20:18This meant that some heroes couldn't make it to the end.
20:21It's only fitting that Tony Stark doesn't survive, but he goes out with an amazing maneuver.
20:26The hero wears the Infinity Gauntlet and unleashes a mighty snap.
20:30And I am Iron Man.
20:41The resulting energy kills him, but it's all for the betterment of the universe.
20:45Stark's death comes after other characters like Black Little gave their lives for the cause.
20:50It's a satisfying and heartbreaking end to an iconic role.
20:53We're gonna be okay.

21:28Terminator 2 – Judgment Day
21:30John, you got to go now.
21:32John!
21:33Go! Now!
21:34Now!
21:35In this time travel adventure, the T-800 must protect John Connor from the T-1000.
21:40This leads to a spectacular battle at a steel mill.
21:43After the enemy goes down, the heroic cyborg mentions that he has to die all the same.
21:47There's one more chip, and it must be destroyed also.
21:56This leads to one of the franchise's most heartfelt scenes.
21:59Connor cries as he embraces his protector, later watching his friend get lowered into molten steel.
22:04Nothing can stop the future bodyguard from completing its mission.
22:08With all the awesome action in this film, this quiet moment leaves a serious impression.
22:13You suddenly realize that you've become attached to an android.
