00:00What are you doing here?
00:02Well, you won't believe me, but I shall miss you.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:08And today, we're counting down our picks for the most moving and memorable scenes in the beloved TV drama Downton Abbey,
00:14as well as its big screen sequels.
00:16It may not be proper, but there will be spoilers.
00:19I'm very sorry. I shouldn't have come.
00:22Number 30. A New Day Begins.
00:30The opening minutes of Downton Abbey assert to viewers that this is no average British costume drama.
00:35The resplendent Grantham estate is introduced, not by its owners, but by staff.
00:52They rise at the break of day, then guide the camera throughout the mansion as they clean and prep.
00:58The elaborate set piece encompasses the workers' frenzy and precision, complete with an iconic one-minute tracking shot.
01:04All the while, we anxiously await the contents of a telegram,
01:08which reports that Lord Grantham's cousin and his son were lost in the RMS Titanic disaster.
01:12Back door.
01:13Fapers at last.
01:15William?
01:17You're late.
01:18Yeah, I know, but...
01:19But what?
01:20You'll see.
01:21Establishing the fictional narrative with this historical tragedy formally sets the tone for a saga
01:26whose sympathies transcend class structure, with stellar production and direction along the way.
01:32Number 29. Isis Gets Sick.
01:35Even the most stoic of men can be broken by a dog.
01:38Robert Crawley certainly had a soft spot for his beloved Isis,
01:41especially when she was at her most frail.
01:43You said it won't take long now.
01:46He offered to put her down there and then, but I...
01:48I couldn't quite let him.
01:50With the devastating news that the dog will soon succumb to cancer,
01:53Robert and Cora bring her to their bed for her final hours.
01:57As they express their love for Isis and each other, Robert is visibly struck by the thought of his wife's mortality.
02:02Two people who love her and each other very much lie at the side.
02:07I only hope I can say the same when my time comes.
02:12Fans were obviously devastated by this moment, but moved by the rare display of Lord Grantham in a vulnerable state.
02:18They were glad to see the other extreme when Cora adopted a new puppy, whom the euphoric Robert names Tio.
02:24She's not exactly trained yet, my lord.
02:26That's why we decided against bringing her up to the library.
02:29Oh, I don't care about that.
02:30You're coming upstairs with me.
02:32Number 28.
02:34Barrow finds new employment.
02:36For all the significance in Downton Abbey's complex depiction of a gay main character,
02:40Thomas Barrow never got his big romance.
02:42There was hope at the end of the 2019 film,
02:45but the sequel reveals that Richard Ellis left Barrow for a sham marriage.
02:49He's surely not to be blamed for it.
02:53It isn't what I want, Mrs. Hughes.
02:57Then you're a brave man.
03:00But you're also destined to be a lonely one.
03:03Unless you're very fortunate.
03:05Enter Guy Dexter, the dashing American movie star with a private lifestyle.
03:09He and Barrow are smitten by the time a production at Downton raves.
03:13Hollywood gets some bad publicity, but I live in a place called Hancock Park, and it's pretty nice.
03:20I can believe it.
03:23Well, why didn't you come and see for yourself?
03:26Plus, the typically smooth Dexter bashfully invites the butler to work for him and be with him.
03:31Bittersweet as it is to see Barrow leave the Granthams for good,
03:34Lady Mary is only so happy to release her old friend for the peace and love he has long deserved.
03:40You don't need to explain, Barrow.
03:42I wish you well.
03:44And I hope you'll be as happy as our cruel world allows.
03:47Thank you, m'lady.
03:50Number 27.
03:52Violet gives away her award.
03:54It's not easy for the Dowager Countess to admit defeat.
03:56It's not like she's had to for years of dominating the Downton Village Flower Show,
04:00especially as she hosts the competition.
04:03But just as she's preparing to give herself the award again in 1913,
04:07she considers Isabel's scrutiny of the judging process as fairness.
04:10She feels in the past I've been given the cup merely as a matter of routine rather than merit.
04:15That's rather ungallant, Mother.
04:17I'm sure when we see cousin Violet's roses, it'll be hard to think they could be bettered.
04:20Hard, but not impossible.
04:22Begrudgingly, then warmly,
04:24Violet recognizes that the mild-mannered gardener Bill Moseley's rose display is truly the best entry.
04:29What seems to be a mundane subplot ends with the show's first major display of the Dowager's selective humility,
04:35or at least her kindness to the hard workers who deserve it the most.
04:39Congratulations, Mr. Moseley.
04:41Thank you, m'lady.
04:42Thank you for letting me have it.
04:45It's the judges who decide these things.
04:47Not me.
04:48But very well done.
04:50Number 26.
04:51Believing in Love.
04:52Lady Mary finds another chance at true love in Henry Talbot.
04:56Of course, Matthew's death in a car accident breeds dread over Henry's professional motorsports career,
05:01especially after he narrowly survives a crash during a race.
05:05When this embitters Mary, she's forced to have a chat with Grandmama Violet.
05:09This becomes a retrospective of the headstrong lady's loves and losses through the years.
05:14Tony Gillingham had all that I could wish.
05:18Birth, money, looks.
05:21But he didn't suit you.
05:24No.
05:24No, he wasn't clever enough.
05:26He wasn't strong enough.
05:30Henry Talbot is both.
05:31She doubts that Violet would approve of a risky relationship with a man of relatively modest means.
05:37However, the old woman shockingly declares that while she values tradition,
05:41she also believes in love.
05:43Brilliant careers, rich lives,
05:46are seldom led without
05:48just an element of love.
05:51Oh, Granny, you do surprise me.
05:59Oh, I am glad.
06:00With the final sit-down between Grandmother and Granddaughter,
06:03Mary is content to marry Henry,
06:05bringing her tragic story to a happy conclusion.
06:08Well, Mr. Talbot, you have swept me off my feet.
06:12I promise you won't be sorry.
06:14I better not be.
06:15Number 25.
06:17Mosley's not-so-private proposal.
06:19The meek Joseph Mosley finds personal fulfillment in teaching and his courtship of Phyllis Baxter.
06:25Alas, he feels financially unworthy of being the latter's husband,
06:28until he finds fortune while helping Downton Abbey accommodate a film production.
06:33She takes his hand,
06:35and they walk away.
06:37Together.
06:39The end.
06:41I think I'm going to cry.
06:43Mr. Mosley, please finish the script.
06:47However you think best, and bring it to me.
06:49Right.
06:49When he also helps with turning the picture into a talkie,
06:52his writing skills prove so impressive that the director offers him a job.
06:56Mosley then reunites with Miss Baxter with a lucrative prospect,
07:00and the question she's been long waiting to hear.
07:03So what do you say?
07:07Are you not going to kneel?
07:12Do you want me to?
07:14I think so.
07:16It'll never happen again.
07:17Little do they realize,
07:19Stray Sound Equipment broadcasts the proposal to the whole house.
07:22But this is one embarrassing moment that Mosley is glad to share with his friends and future wife.
07:35Settle down, everyone, please.
07:37Let's go for a first take.
07:38Number 24.
07:40Tom and Lucy Dance
07:41What are you doing here?
07:44I wanted to see the dancing.
07:45So I thought I'd pretend I was bringing Lady Bagshaw and get you found.
07:50I can give it to her if you'd like.
07:52I wish you could dance with me.
07:58Just when Tom thought he was content being a widowed father,
08:01he becomes a pawn in a crooked game of matchmaker.
08:03Violet is seeking the fortune of her cousin, Maude Bagshaw,
08:06whose estate is willed to her lady's maid and illegitimate daughter, Lucy Smith.
08:10But Tom genuinely bonds with this fellow servant being reluctantly groomed for high society.
08:15I have such a feeling that you can understand what's going on inside my head when no one else does or ever could.
08:22While Downton hosts a royal ball, these two outsiders meet on the terrace for their own dance.
08:31It's the perfect symbol to resolve Tom's arc with a partner who fully understands him.
08:36When he and Lucy get married in a new era, it's all for love over status.
08:41Number 23.
08:42Defending Barrow
08:43Thomas Barrow finds himself in trouble again when he's tricked into kissing his friend Jimmy Kent.
08:48The subsequent revelation of Barrow's sexuality divides Downton in these more regressive times.
08:53Human nature is a funny business, isn't it?
08:58Why didn't the poets come to you, Mr. Carson?
09:01They'd have saved themselves a lot of time and trouble.
09:04All this talk comes to action when police crash a cricket match on a tip from Alfred Nugent.
09:09Thankfully, the homophobic eyewitness retracts his statement after being confronted by Robert,
09:14who understands that Barrow is as he was made to be and shouldn't be persecuted for it.
09:19Thomas does not choose to be the way he is.
09:22And what harm was done, really, that his life should be destroyed for it?
09:27Well, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
09:30Are you without sin, Alfred? For I am certainly not.
09:33Helping to protect the footman also forces Mr. Carson to reckon with his own prejudice.
09:37Afterward, Barrow rises to the rank of under-butler,
09:40with the knowledge that the family that's forgiven so much at least respects him for who he is.
09:46Number 22. A Day at the Beach
09:48Even the staff of a lavish aristocratic house could use a holiday.
09:52Well, maybe they especially do with that line of work.
09:55Mr. Carson is tasked with organizing a day trip to the beach,
09:58where tranquility brings perspective to the romantic entanglements.
10:01We could take the pullman from Victoria. A day return ticket costs 12 shillings each.
10:06It's a lot, but her ladyship's happy to pay.
10:09Well, thank heaven you got there in the end.
10:13Phyllis Baxter thanks Mosley for giving her strength.
10:16Daisy declines Ethan Slade's invitation to America,
10:19and the long-suffering Mr. and Mrs. Bates finally get to relax.
10:23Even the fuddy-duddy Carson strolls into the water with Mrs. Hughes' encouragement,
10:27in a beautifully shot display of the spirit she brings out in him.
10:30You can hold my hand, then we'll both go in together.
10:35I think I will hold your hand.
10:37It'll make me feel a bit steady.
10:40You can always hold my hand if you need to feel steady.
10:45I don't know how, but you managed to make that sound a little risque.
10:50The whole scene shows these servants enjoying something much deeper than a day off.
10:54They're expressing their agency fully and sweetly.
10:57Number 21. Mr. Bates is freed
11:00Of all the servants downstairs, Mr. Bates and his wife Anna arguably have it the hardest,
11:06facing adversity at nearly every turn.
11:08Before Anna, too, would be accused of a murder she didn't commit,
11:12Bates is actually convicted of the crime in the advent of his estranged wife Vera's suspicious death.
11:18John Bates,
11:19You have been found guilty of the charge of willful murder.
11:25You will be taken from here to a place of execution.
11:28Though our protagonists are able to get his sentence commuted from death to a life,
11:33things look pretty bleak as Bates is set to waste away in prison.
11:36Thankfully, Anna's staunch loyalty to her husband pays off as she proves Vera's passing is on no one's hands but her own.
11:44The scene where Anna greets a freed Bates outside the gates convinced us their love could weather any storm.
11:50Thank God.
11:51Yes, thank God.
11:55And you.
11:56Number 20.
12:02Matthew Walks Again
12:04We wish Matthew's wartime injuries were the last of his troubles,
12:08but his overcoming them certainly makes for a glimmer in an eventually tragic character.
12:13Upon his return from World War I, the family learns that an incident severed his spinal cord,
12:18meaning he'd never walk again.
12:20This is not the end of his life.
12:22Just the start of a different life.
12:24This sends Matthew into a disheartening depression.
12:27But in what would prove to be just one of multiple misdiagnoses,
12:31Matthew begins regaining sensation in his legs before instinctually rising to his feet to catch a falling Lavinia.
12:37Look out!
12:40Heavens, that was a new thing.
12:43My God.
12:45Turns out Matthew's spine wasn't nearly as damaged as previously thought.
12:49The happy occasion prompts Matthew and Lavinia to resume their engagement,
12:52even though we all knew this would only complicate things further with Mary.
12:57Excellent news.
12:59Yes.
12:59Good evening.
13:00There isn't that excellent news.
13:03Just excellent.
13:05Number 19.
13:06Daisy and Williams' Deathbed Wedding
13:08In the same explosion that injures Matthew,
13:11so too does Downton footman William Mason receive brutal injuries.
13:15But whereas Matthew's are temporary,
13:18William's are sadly fatal.
13:19He's sent back to Downton to live out his final days,
13:23where he proposes to kitchen maid Daisy,
13:25for whom he's always held aflame.
13:27I can't.
13:29It'd be dishonest.
13:32Almost like cheating.
13:34But it's not cheating.
13:36We love each other, don't we?
13:38Unfortunately, Daisy's never reciprocated his feelings,
13:41and thus feels conflicted as to what to do.
13:44Though it would later give her further guilt,
13:46Mrs. Patmore persuades her to go through with it.
13:49It's a tricky situation, to be sure,
13:51but it all speaks to Daisy's kind-hearted nature,
13:54as their bedside nuptials just hours before William passes
13:58prove to be one of the saddest moments in the series.
14:01Yes.
14:03I am good.
14:05Number 18.
14:07Atticus Proposes to Lady Rose
14:08Lady Rose, to us, is an underrated character,
14:12but few will deny that she and Atticus Aldridge were made for each other.
14:17Would you just look at that meet-cute?
14:18You must have a very sweet tooth.
14:22No, they're not for me.
14:24I give tea to some Russian refugees every Tuesday and Thursday.
14:28They love cake.
14:29I love cake.
14:31Oh, you can come and have some if you'd like.
14:33Whereas most couples on Downton go through long courtships
14:36and arduous relationships,
14:38Rose and Atticus prove the exception.
14:41Despite various family members' disapproval of their coupling,
14:44or rather, in spite of it,
14:46Atticus pops the question just two episodes later.
14:49The truth is that we haven't known each other very long.
14:52And they're right.
14:53They're bound to be problems.
14:54But the way I see it,
14:56we both know we're going to get married in the end.
14:58We know we're right together.
15:00Yes.
15:02I suppose we do.
15:03Many could object to their speedy union,
15:05and many could be forgiven for thinking they'd never make it.
15:08But at the end of the day,
15:10this adorable couple simply knew something everyone else didn't.
15:14Number 17.
15:15Mrs. Drew Kidnaps Marigold.
15:17There are many times when Downton Abbey feels like historical literature
15:21circa the 19th century,
15:23but never more so than during the saga of Edith's illegitimate daughter Marigold.
15:27Unable to claim her as her own,
15:30Edith has her stay at the nearby Drew Farm.
15:32Mr. Drew, would you do that for me?
15:34For you and the little girl, my lady?
15:37Yes.
15:39I will.
15:39Trouble is,
15:40Edith's visits aren't enough,
15:42as she decides to take Marigold back.
15:44This greatly upsets Mrs. Drew,
15:47who'd come to love the young girl as one of her own.
15:49This nice lady is your new mummy.
15:52She loves you
15:53more than anyone else could.
15:56But don't you forget.
15:58And we love you too.
16:05Everything comes to a head when Mrs. Drew absconds with Marigold during an event in town.
16:10The scene following where Mr. Drew has to talk her down is heartbreaking,
16:14and makes you feel for all those involved.
16:17Surely you can't be angry when I only want to hold her close and love her as much as I can.
16:24Number 16.
16:25The Dowager Countess's Mortality
16:27While she doesn't get many storylines of her own,
16:30you'd be hard-pressed to find someone whose favorite character isn't the Dowager Countess.
16:35Oh, good.
16:36I'm glad I'm a revelation and not a disappointment.
16:38She may be best known for her quick wit and wry disposition,
16:42but the most meaningful scene of hers might be a more somber one from the 2019 movie.
16:47In it, she reveals to Mary that a recent doctor's visit yielded news that she likely doesn't have long to live.
16:54May you save your tears for something sad?
16:56There's nothing sad here.
16:59I have lived a privileged and an interesting life, and now it's time to go.
17:06Though this would undoubtedly bring anyone down,
17:09the moment has a heartening undertone as she reassures Mary that Downton will go on under her care.
17:14You're the best of me that will live on.
17:19Hurrah!
17:20Seriously, what's the point of a Downton movie if we can't get Maggie Smith another Oscar nomination?
17:25Number 15.
17:27Edith and Birdie's Wedding
17:28Of all the Crawley sisters, Edith has to be the most unlucky in love,
17:33as a later entry will exemplify.
17:34However, whereas other shows have failed to give characters the endings they deserve,
17:39Season 6 of Downton Abbey made sure to give Edith her rightfully happily ever after.
17:44I love you, Birdie.
17:47I've been in love before.
17:49I won't pretend that I haven't.
17:52But I really do love you.
17:54And I'll take that as a yes.
17:56While Birdie is understandably thrown for a loop when he learns of Marigold's parentage from someone other than Edith,
18:02his love for her is reaffirmed when he proposes again later on.
18:06There could be gossip.
18:08Are you ready for it?
18:09I hope to avoid it, but I'm ready if we can't.
18:13The only thing I'm not ready for is a life without you.
18:17Thankfully, despite all of Edith's poor luck, this one is for real,
18:22as she and Birdie decide to face life's future challenges together.
18:26Though there are a lot of shocking developments on the show,
18:32few take us quite as aback as Robert's ulcer incident.
18:36Obviously, we knew going into the final season that for every few characters that got happily ever afters,
18:42there could be some we had to say goodbye to in more ways than one.
18:46Which is why it was so concerning to see Robert, the ostensible lead of the show,
18:51suddenly spew up blood at the dinner table.
18:53Can't we stop this beastly row?
18:55How I wish we could.
18:56Because I... I... I'm so sorry.
19:00While the show had previously established Robert's stomach ulcer,
19:03we still didn't expect any repercussions this dramatic.
19:07Thankfully, Robert does survive surgery,
19:10so we were granted more time with the Earl of Grantham,
19:12but we won't get that image out of our heads any time soon.
19:16You're quite pale. We'll go together.
19:19You've had a shock.
19:20I think I've had a few shocks this evening.
19:23Number 13. Barrow's Attempt
19:25Thank you for your inquiry, but we wish to combine the roles of butler, chauffeur, and valet,
19:31and you seem overqualified.
19:33But please accept our best wishes for the future.
19:37What future?
19:39We often have a love-hate relationship with Thomas Barrow,
19:42hating him one minute for his incessant scheming,
19:45and loving him the next for his tragic status and genuine desire to be better.
19:49It's the mark of a truly great character.
19:51So in no way did we ever want to lose him when he began to enter a deep depression.
19:56Thankfully, his sometimes frenemy Miss Baxter is able to read the signs soon enough
20:01to save Thomas from taking his own life.
20:03Let's have you seen Mr. Barrow.
20:05He was going in for a bath.
20:06Oh my God. Come with me.
20:09Despite all his needlessly destructive behavior,
20:12Thomas realizes that he has people who care about him anyway,
20:15which is beautifully exemplified in a scene wherein he and Mary are able to empathize with
20:20each other on that point.
20:21I've done sad things.
20:23I don't know why.
20:26I can't stop myself.
20:28Now I'm paying the price.
20:30Strange.
20:31I could say the same.
20:33Number 12.
20:34Cora's miscarriage.
20:36Pregnant?
20:37You need me quite so shocked.
20:39After tirelessly searching for a male heir,
20:42Lord Grantham's problems are seemingly solved when his wife Cora becomes pregnant.
20:46If the baby's a boy, he'll inherit his father's property and fortune,
20:51preserving tradition.
20:53The future of Downton Abbey is put back in jeopardy, however,
20:56when maid Sarah O'Brien intervenes.
20:59Infuriated that she might be replaced,
21:01O'Brien leaves a bar of soap for Cora to slip on.
21:04She quickly regrets this cruel deed and attempts to correct her wrongdoing,
21:08but it's too late.
21:10Cora falls and loses her unborn child.
21:12Hello, Dave.
21:13If you could just wait.
21:16It's a haunting moment that left viewers stunned.
21:19To make matters worse for Lord Grantham,
21:21it turns out the baby would have been their sole son.
21:25It was a boy.
21:27Number 11.
21:28Mr. Pamukk's body.
21:29What happened?
21:30I don't know.
21:32A heart attack, I suppose, or a stroke, or...
21:34Laini Mary is immediately drawn to Kamal Pamukk,
21:37but she's taken aback when he makes sexual advances.
21:40Despite her apprehension,
21:42the persuasive Mr. Pamukk convinces her to spend the night with him.
21:45Their passionate evening takes an unexpected turn for the worse, however.
21:50As Mary loses her virginity,
21:52Pamukk suffers a heart attack and dies in her bed.
21:55He was alive and suddenly he cried out and then he was dead.
21:59But why was he here at all?
22:00To preserve the eldest Crawley daughter's reputation,
22:04her mother and her loyal servant Anna help move the body.
22:08I'm half-fired.
22:09The three return Pamukk to his room,
22:12although the scullery maid, Daisy, catches them in the act.
22:15This was the first of many scandals that befell Downton Abbey,
22:18and it offered a glimpse of how jaw-droppingly good the series would become,
22:22while working in some dark humor.
22:25I couldn't.
22:26It's not possible.
22:27If you don't,
22:29we will figure in a scandal of such magnitude
22:31that it will never be forgotten until long after we're both dead.
22:34Number 10.
22:35Edith stands up to Mary.
22:37As much as we love Mary,
22:39her attitude towards Edith is far from healthy.
22:42She's often meddled with,
22:43or outright disapproved of Edith's life
22:45out of nothing more than spite.
22:47While there's always been friction between the two sisters,
22:50things come to a head when Mary crosses the line
22:53by revealing Edith's illegitimate daughter to Bertie Pelham.
22:56And I admire you, Bertie.
22:58Not everyone would accept Edith's past.
23:01Mary, don't.
23:02What do you mean?
23:03Well, you must have told him.
23:05You couldn't accept him without telling him.
23:07Tell me what?
23:08About Marigold.
23:10Who she really is.
23:11Having absolutely had it this time with Mary's venom,
23:14Edith lets her have everything she has coming,
23:17and uses a certain word seldom used by early 20th century ladies.
23:22I know you.
23:23I know you to be a nasty, jealous, scheming bitch.
23:27Now listen, you possessive...
23:28You're a bitch!
23:31I'm not content with ruining your own life.
23:33You're determined to ruin mine.
23:35Still, theirs being one of the most important relationships on the show,
23:39we were immensely glad they were able to begin patching things up
23:42by the episode's end.
23:44Until at last,
23:45our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.
23:50Number 9. Mr. Carson's Proposal.
23:53I do want to be stuck with you.
23:55Although they keep their relationship strictly professional for most of the series,
23:59Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes have always felt like a married couple.
24:02As the butler and head housekeeper at Downton Abbey,
24:05they've developed an intense and meaningful bond
24:08while maintaining order in the household.
24:10It was positively uplifting when they walked along the beach together,
24:14but we'd have to wait another year for Carson to finally pop the question.
24:18Having purchased a property in their names,
24:21Carson confesses his feelings for Mrs. Hughes
24:24and asks for her hand in marriage.
24:26I'm not convinced I can be hearing this right.
24:30You are, if you think I'm asking you to marry me.
24:35She's quick to accept the old boobies' overdue proposal,
24:38practically moving them both to tears of joy.
24:41After so much will-they-won't-they tension,
24:44this sentimental declaration of love couldn't have been more satisfying.
24:48Of course I'll marry you, you old boobie.
24:54I thought you'd never ask.
24:56Number 8. Edith Left at the Altar
24:59Well, fashionably late is one thing.
25:04It's not easy being the middle crawly daughter.
25:06Every time it looks like Edith is going to find happiness,
25:09failure and sorrow seem to be waiting around the corner instead.
25:13Case in point, her wedding day.
25:16Despite a significant age difference,
25:18Edith is keen on dedicating her life to Sir Antony Strahlen.
25:21As the bride arrives at the altar, though,
25:23Strahlen suddenly gets cold feet.
25:26Dearly beloved,
25:27we are gathered-
25:29I can't do this.
25:30Not wanting Edith to throw her life away,
25:33the elderly groom calls the wedding off.
25:35You know it's wrong.
25:36You told me so yourself several times.
25:38My dear chap.
25:38No, I never should have let her get this far.
25:41To be fair, Strahlen only had Edith's best interests at heart,
25:45but he couldn't have chosen a worse time to drop this bombshell.
25:49The audience is every bit as devastated as Edith,
25:52who just can't catch a break.
25:57Number 7. Anna's Assault
25:59Valid Mr. Green might seem friendly at first glance,
26:07but he shows his true colors when he attacks Anna Bates in the kitchen.
26:11What I want is to go back upstairs.
26:14You're not telling me that sad old cripple keeps you happy?
26:18If you must know, yes.
26:21He keeps me very happy.
26:23Now let me by, please.
26:26Perhaps you've forgotten what you're missing.
26:28The head housemaid screams for help,
26:30but everyone else is preoccupied upstairs as Dame Nellie Melba sings.
26:34Following the assault,
26:35Anna is left in pieces while Mr. Green resumes his normal duties.
26:39But, but, but must tell someone.
26:41No, no, no.
26:42But you have to tell Mr. Bates.
26:44Him, least of all.
26:45This was easily the most controversial subject Downton Abbey ever tackled,
26:50with many critics arguing that the show had gone too far.
26:53While Anna's assault is undeniably brutal,
26:56it's also a shocking moment from the series that we won't soon forget.
27:04Number 6.
27:06Bates and Anna's Wedding
27:07With this ring, I plight thee my truth.
27:10If there are two people at Downton Abbey that deserve to live happily ever after,
27:15it's Mr. Bates and Anna.
27:16After overcoming so much,
27:19these two finally make it to the altar where they're pronounced husband and wife.
27:22With some help from Lady Mary,
27:24Anna and Bates get to spend their wedding night in one of Downton's guest rooms.
27:28Smuggle Bates in here when everyone has gone to bed.
27:31And for heaven's sake, make sure he gets the right room.
27:33Their evening together is nothing short of heavenly.
27:36But this emotional rollercoaster ride is still far from over.
27:40Shortly after secretly tying the knot,
27:42Bates is arrested for allegedly murdering his ex-wife.
27:45You are under arrest on the charge of willful murder.
27:48While we know their story ultimately ends well,
27:51it's disheartening all the same to see their happiness interrupted in any way.
27:55Number 5.
27:56I'd Wait Forever
27:57But you haven't caught up with an answer yet, have you?
28:01Not yet, I'm afraid.
28:02Along with Bates and Anna,
28:04Lady Sybil and Tom Branson were easily among our favorite couples on Downton Abbey.
28:09Despite coming from different classes,
28:11the youngest Crawley daughter and the family chauffeur share instant chemistry.
28:16And I won't always be a chauffeur.
28:19They'd gladly give up everything to be with each other.
28:22Although, World War I stands in their way.
28:25When Tom proposes marriage,
28:27Sybil holds off on giving him an answer until the war is over.
28:30She asks Tom for a little more time to consider his offer.
28:34To which he replies,
28:35I'd wait forever.
28:36While this exchange is brief and simple,
28:38it says so much about the sincere connection between these two characters.
28:43Number 4.
28:44Matthew's Death
28:45Life is strange, isn't it?
28:48In so many different ways.
28:50Mary and Matthew's relationship certainly had its ups and downs over the years.
28:54But Downton's primary couple reaches the pinnacle of happiness
28:57upon welcoming a baby boy into the world.
29:00Now that Lord Grantham has two heirs,
29:02it appears everything will work out for the Crawley family.
29:05Unfortunately, this joyous occasion is followed by tragedy,
29:09as Matthew dies in a car crash on the way home.
29:14While the show had killed off major characters before,
29:17the idea of Matthew dying was considered unthinkable by audiences,
29:21and was received by fans with anger, shock, and profound sadness.
29:26This twist was a major game changer,
29:29showing the Crawleys that nothing lasts forever.
29:31Number 3.
29:33Lady Sybil's Death
29:34Mama, Mama, wake up, it's Sybil.
29:38Part of what made Matthew's death so traumatic
29:40was that viewers were still coping with the loss of Lady Sybil.
29:44Help her! Help her, please! What's happening?
29:46She can't breathe.
29:47In addition to being Lord and Lady Grantham's youngest daughter,
29:50Sybil was arguably the most modern and spirited Crawley.
29:54After marrying Branson and giving birth to a baby girl,
29:57Sybil's future seemed brighter than ever.
29:59Oh my darling.
30:00I do love you so much.
30:05Her happiness was short-lived though,
30:07as she begins convulsing and suffers one of the show's most untimely deaths.
30:12Watching Sybil take her last breath is gut-wrenching to say the least.
30:15But this can't be.
30:19She's 24 years old.
30:22This cannot be.
30:24As the family surrounds her deathbed,
30:26the audience is left at a complete loss for words.
30:30Adding to the grief,
30:31Sybil's death could have been prevented
30:33had her father listened to Dr. Clarkson
30:35and taken her to the hospital.
30:37Because if we'd listened to him,
30:38Sybil might still be alive.
30:40But Sir Philip and your father knew better
30:42and now she's dead.
30:43Number 2.
30:44Violet Passes Away
30:45The seemingly unsinkable dowager Countess of Grantham
30:48lives to see the sequel
30:49after the first Downton Abbey reveals a terminal diagnosis.
30:53Only after she affirms her love for her son
30:55and his late father
30:56does her health take a sudden turn.
30:58I hope I haven't been a disappointment.
31:02You were always so much cleverer than me.
31:04True.
31:06But don't let that come between us now.
31:09You are far kinder than I have ever been.
31:14Naturally, she remains in higher spirits
31:16than the many loved ones and servants
31:17who gather around her deathbed.
31:19Snide to the very end,
31:21Violet Crawley laughs out her final words.
31:25Melody, stop that noise.
31:29I can't hear myself die.
31:32Downton then hosts a funeral
31:33worthy of a woman so grand and dignified.
31:36It was indeed the ideal final word
31:38for the dowager Countess
31:39and, as it turned out,
31:41the legendary Dame Maggie Smith.

32:06Number 1.
32:07Marry Me, Mary
32:08You're really going to America?
32:11Downton Abbey was fearless
32:13when it came to breaking our hearts,
32:14but it was also never afraid
32:16to be utterly romantic.
32:18Ever since Mary and Matthew met,
32:20we wanted nothing more
32:21than to see them together.
32:23It was especially touching
32:24when Matthew returned home from war
32:26and joined Mary in a duet.
32:27I would say such wonderful things to you.
32:33There would be such wonderful things.
32:38But nothing can top this elegant proposal.
32:41On a picturesque Christmas night,
32:43Matthew and Mary lay all their cards on the table.
32:46Deciding to forgive and forget,
32:48Matthew asks Mary for her hand in marriage.
32:51Mary is eager to accept,
32:53although she is adamant
32:54that Matthew gets down on one knee first.
32:57You must say it properly.
32:59I won't answer unless you
33:01kneel down and everything.
33:03This scene can only be described as enchanting
33:06and is Downton Abbey at its finest.
33:09Lady Mary Crawley.
33:14Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?
33:18Yes.
33:23Which Downton Abbey moments
33:28especially ring a bell for you?
