00:00New figures presented to counsellors across the North East have revealed 375 suspected suicides between April 2024 and March 2025.
00:09The data shared by the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board shows the region's suicide rate standard 12.5 per 100,000 people,
00:17slightly higher than the England and Wales average of 11.4.
00:21The report highlights patterns that leaders say must inform future prevention work.
00:2542% of suspected suicides involved people aged between 40 and 59, nearly three quarters were men.
00:32With 69% of deaths occurring at home, the findings suggest that people may be struggling privately out of sight of services or support.
00:41What is particularly significant is that only half of those who died were known to mental health services at the time.
00:47However, around 31% had a known history of alcohol use and 30% had a history of drug or substance misuse,
00:54indicating that in some cases underlying risk factors were present even without direct contact with mental health providers.
01:01The data also breaks down rates by local authority.
01:04The highest recorded rate was in South Tyneside at 19.8 per 100,000, followed by Redcourt and Cleveland at 14.4, Cumberland at 13.9 and Sunderland at 13.5.
01:17The variation across the region highlights that risk factors and community pressures are not experienced evenly.
01:24A high proportion of people who died were not in contact with services, suggesting barriers to access and support,
01:30or perhaps a lack of recognition that support was needed.
01:34The ICB says its suicide prevention strategy is ongoing, including staff training, better awareness and measures to reduce access to means through medication management.
