Billy Porter spoke on the red carpet of the 2022 GRAMMY Awards about directing his first feature film, telling stories of the “voiceless,” directing an episode of Fox’s ‘Accused’ and more.

00:00We have the superstar legendary Billy Porter.

00:03Billy, directing.

00:06Interesting you're back at this point.

00:08I heard you're going to direct a new episode for Fox Accused.

00:11I am directing an episode for the new show Accused on Fox,

00:14and I just directed my first feature film,

00:16Anything's Possible for Orion Pictures,

00:19that's hopefully coming out this summer.

00:20We just finished it.

00:23So, you know, it's exciting.

00:25What is it about directing that you love

00:27that you may not get from acting or doing music?

00:30I'm the boss,

00:31and I get to tell the story exactly the way I want to.

00:36And when you're telling stories

00:38from a marginalized group of people,

00:40you know, when you're telling stories

00:42of a people who have been voiceless for so long,

00:46you've got to be the right person telling it.

00:49You know, and I think we're in a new space

00:52where, you know,

00:55that is what most companies are looking for now,

00:58is the authentic voice to tell these stories

01:01and not, you know,

01:03coming out of the mouths of just straight white men all the time.

01:08You know, if you're going to tell a story

01:09about a transgender person,

01:10you might need a transgender person

01:12to help you tell that story, right?

01:13This is correct.

01:14A black gay man to tell that story.

01:16You know, whatever it is,

01:17to be embracing the people

01:20whose lives and stories it is,

01:22they are is what's happening right now,

01:24and I'm proud to be a part of that transition.

01:28I love that.

01:29I got to ask for the fans out there,

01:30any update on Pose?

01:33What's the update?

01:34I mean, I got people asking.

01:36They wanted me to try to ask.

01:38It's over.

01:39Yeah, but I'm talking about bringing it, you know.

01:42Listen, I don't have any control over that.

01:45If they want to bring it back,

01:46I'm sure I'll get a call.

01:48But until then,

01:49I'm working on my own music.

01:50I'm working on my own television shows,

01:53my own stuff,

01:55and trying to make a mark

01:57and make a difference.

01:58And that's all you can do.
