00:00This is the first script that you wrote together since then?
00:02That's right, the first movie we've written in 25 years or something.
00:06Matt Damon is opening up about reuniting with Ben Affleck on their latest film, The Last Duel.
00:11While appearing on The Tonight Show, the writer, actor, and producer briefly spoke about how he and Affleck had come back together to write for their upcoming film,
00:18the first time the two have written together since their Oscar-winning work on Good Will Hunting.
00:23Adapted from the novel The Last Duel, a true story of trial by combat in medieval France,
00:27the film, directed by Ridley Scott, recounts the story around a 1386 trial by combat,
00:33the last officially recognized judicial duel in France.
00:36It's all based on this history book we read, and so we adapted that, but we saw it as a story of perspective,
00:42and so Ben and I wrote the male perspectives, and Nicole wrote the female perspective, and we're really excited about it.
00:46Damon further elaborated on working with Affleck on the historical drama while speaking to Entertainment Tonight,
00:52saying this time around was a much smoother process.
00:54I think that writing process for Good Will Hunting was so inefficient,
00:58because we didn't really understand structure, so we wrote thousands of pages.
01:02He further added,
01:03Back in the day, we didn't have deadlines because nobody cared what we were doing.
01:06No one was waiting for the script.
01:08We were unemployed, so we literally had nothing else to do.
01:11Damon also teased that the two may write a lot more in the future.
01:14I think we just found that making movies for 30 years,
01:17we actually learned something about structure along the way,
01:20and the process went along a lot faster.
01:22And so I think we'll write a lot more in the future,
01:24just because it didn't turn out to be as time-consuming as we thought.
