00:00I'll never find a gem of mine
00:07I'll open up the doors
00:09Help me if you can
00:11I'm feeling bad
00:30We were like in the eye of the hurricane
00:32So we were just in this little goldfish bowl in the middle
00:36And one didn't really have time to think what was going on
00:39It was just going on so fast
00:40Ted Sullivan had seen us in England
00:43And all the time and life
00:45And Newsweek had all put covers of the Beatles
00:47On their magazines prior to us arriving
00:50So it was a surprise though
00:52Because we thought we'd have to work a little bit
00:56For this notoriety
00:57When we arrived here we knew how to handle press
01:00The British press are the toughest in the world
01:02We could handle anything
01:03We were all right
01:05The press they started shouting at us
01:10They like being just shouted back at
01:13You know and we did do it with humor
01:15Could you please sing something?
01:17No
01:17Sorry
01:19Next question
01:20No we need money first
01:22There's a question here
01:26How many are bald that you have to wear those big?
01:28To all of us
01:29I'm bald
01:30You're bald?
01:30Oh we're all a bald
01:31Don't tell anyone please
01:32I got a question here
01:33Do you want to get a haircut at all?
01:35No
01:35No thanks
01:36I had one yesterday
01:37That's no lie
01:40Absolutely
01:42What do you think does to these people?
01:46I don't know
01:47Well
01:47Pleases them I think
01:49Well they must do because they're buying it
01:50Why does it excite us so much?
01:52We don't know really
01:53Absolutely
01:54We can form another group and be managers
01:56Everybody in Liverpool thinks they're a comedian
01:58And when you just transposed it into New Yorkism
02:01It was great
02:03I mean we were just being hard-faced really
02:05And they loved it
02:07I remember for instance the great moment of going into the limo
02:14And putting on the radio
02:16And there we were on American Radio
02:18I don't know
02:21And the power of putting an exciting morning on Wednesday's Brad Phillips
02:27As the battles of the Beatles
02:29The biggest hit on all the groups in the world
02:31Yeah
02:31Yeah
02:32I don't know
02:33I don't know
02:34I don't know
02:34I don't know
02:35I don't know
02:36I don't know
02:36I don't know
02:36At seven the Beatles made their own poetry
02:38On a documentary Meet the Beatles
02:40Oh no
02:41Oh really?
02:42I don't get that
02:43I don't understand this
02:44Tomorrow night from seven to eight

09:04of them with the new york skyline behind them now yesterday and today our theater's been jammed with
09:11news papemen and hundreds of dogs from all over the nation and these veterans agree with me that the
09:15city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from liverpool who call themselves
09:20the beatles now tonight you're going to twice be entertained by them right now and again in the second
09:25half of our show ladies and gentlemen the beatles bring them on

10:35close your eyes
10:48close your eyes
10:50and i'll miss you
10:52well it's still supposed to be the largest viewing audience ever in the states you know and the states
11:05being the biggest showbiz town ever it was very important yeah i still get people talking to me
11:23about it now you know it's like where were you when kennedy was shot
11:27later they said there was the least reported or there was no reported crime even the criminals
11:39had a rest for for like 10 minutes while we were on
11:45you know something very nice happened and the beatles got a great kick out of it we just received
11:49the wire they did from elvis presley and colonel tom parker wishing them a tremendous success in our
11:55country i think that was very very nice and then we did the train ride to washington
12:10and that's where we got to know quite a few of the press guys and that's where they started to get
12:20friendly and let us know that they were out there actually to kill us and as we shouted at them they
12:25loved us god knows what would happen if we hadn't shouted two four four two four seven two five one
12:40we got a quote all right it's great being here in new york okay oh is that the place i don't know
12:49washington i just move in so fast there may be a controversy over the beatles apparel and their
12:55hairdos but there's no debate about one thing they sure have got talent the washington gig there was
13:02like 10 12 000 people that was a hell of a lot of people in those days that you were playing to
13:08good evening how do you do we'd like to thank everybody here in america washington america
13:27we'd like to thank everybody for uh buying this particular record and starting this thing off
13:33in america and giving us the chance to come here and see you all in washington thank you
13:49thank you
13:51thank you
13:57it's
13:59and she told me what to say
14:03and she said she loves you
14:07and you know that can't be fair
14:11she loves you
14:21and you know
14:25you're not
14:27it's
14:31it's
14:37it's
14:39it's
14:41it's
14:47it's
14:51You should be glad
14:53You know it's up to you
14:57I think it's only fair
15:01I've been hurt you too
15:03I apologize to her
15:07Because she loves you
15:08And you know I can't be mad
15:11She loves you
15:14And you know you should be glad
15:18She loves you
15:23And you know you should be glad
15:29With a love like that
15:33You know you should be glad
15:36With a love like that
15:39You know you should be glad
15:48Yeah yeah yeah yeah
15:53We did that Washington show
15:59It was like a boxing ring
16:00Right with people all round
16:03Every song you'd go to a different side of the stage
16:07Right
16:07And so you had to move the mics all the time
16:10You know
16:11And Ringo was sitting on a
16:13Like this round thing
16:15In the middle of the stage
16:16That his drums were on
16:17So you had to turn that round
16:18To face whichever way
16:20The band were playing
16:21And the bloody thing got stuck
16:22You know
16:32So there's all this chaos going on
16:34And whatever
16:35But it was a good show
16:37All right
16:39The song
16:40Yeah
16:41The song's called
16:42I saw her standing there
16:44One, two, three
16:45When she was just 17
16:53You know what I mean
16:56And the way she was
16:58Was way beyond compare
17:00How could I dance
17:05With a mother
17:07Who does all her
17:11Stand inside
17:12Well she looked at me
17:17And I, I perceived
17:20That before too long
17:22I'd fall in love with her
17:24She wouldn't dance
17:29With a mother
17:30And I saw her
17:35Stand in there
17:36Well my heart went through
17:41When I crossed and grew
17:44And I held my hand
17:48In my room
17:49Oh we danced
17:55Through the night
17:57And we held each other's side
18:00And they were born too long
18:02I fell in love with her
18:04And I'll never dance
18:09With another
18:10Oh
18:12Since I saw her standing there
18:16When we danced
18:30Oh, we danced through the night
18:45And we held each other tight
18:48And before too long, I fell in love with her
18:53I'll never dance with another
18:59Since I saw her standing
19:04Since I saw her standing
19:10We were surrounded by the kids
19:16And with it being America, the parents sort of went along with the kids
19:20more than they did in England
19:22I loved it. I absolutely loved it
19:25We didn't think whether we're that good or not
19:29You've got to think you're good to do what we did, you know
19:32The last thing I remember was playing music in a club
19:34And the next minute this
19:35But we never thought about it too much
19:37Because it was an ongoing thing
19:39It was happening to us
19:41And it was hard to see, you know
19:42We were just in the middle
19:43Being ushered from room to room
19:45Yeah, the British Embassy, it was
19:48There was a kind of party, you know
19:49So this was one of the things that were starting to happen
19:52Because we now were conquering America
19:55Obviously the British ambassador could play a role in this
19:59And it would be good publicity for him probably
20:02You know, silly, I know
20:03But there were a lot of Hooray Henrys there
20:08And we'd never really met them yet
20:09We hadn't played many sort of arts balls
20:11Or Cambridge May balls
20:14Or that kind of thing
20:15We'd heard about these guys
20:16Who got a little bit stroppy after a few drinks
20:18Ah, I say, you know
20:19Play Rachmaninoff's piano concerto
20:22Ha, ha, ha
20:23We were standing around saying
20:25Hi, it's very nice here
20:27And having a drink
20:27And one of them
20:29Came up behind me
20:31And snipped a piece of my hair off
20:33You know, it got me angry
20:35So I just swung
20:36Oh, what the hell do you think
20:37Oh, it's okay
20:38I was having just, you know
20:39Bullshit, bullshit
20:40Some bloody animal cut Ringo's hair
20:44You know, in the middle of
20:44I walked out of that
20:45You know, swearing at all of them
20:48And I just left in the middle of it
20:49What do you have to say about that?
20:51Really?
20:51One day you'll look
21:00And then we eventually, as you say, got down to Miami
21:03Which was, well, I mean, that was just like paradise
21:05Because, I mean, we'd never been to anywhere
21:08Where there was palm trees
21:09And we took a lot of photos
21:11You know, we were like tourists
21:13And we had our Pentax cameras
21:15I was the one
21:17But tomorrow may rain
21:19So I'll follow the sun
21:22And now the time has come
21:26And so, my love, I must go
21:29And though I lose a friend
21:34In the end you will know
21:37Oh, one day you'll find
21:43That I have gone
21:45But tomorrow may rain
21:48So I'll follow the sun
21:51This was just the most brilliant place
21:58I'd ever been to
21:59And people were lending us yachts
22:01Or anything we wanted
22:02I mean, this family lent us their boat
22:05And they let me drive
22:07About a 60-foot yacht
22:08You know, speedboat
22:10Which I proceeded to bring in
22:12To port head on
22:14You know, not really knowing much
22:18About driving speedboats
22:21And so, you know, they have those pretty rails
22:24On the front, hanging up
22:25Well, this one
22:26Just bent the bugger all over the place
22:30But they didn't seem to mind
22:31You know, they were just happy
22:32We had a great time there
22:33We stayed in a hotel most of the time
22:36And sort of looked down on the sand
22:37Where the kids, the fans would write
22:39I love Jan
22:41On the sand, you know
22:42So you could read it from your hotel room
22:45And I remember playing at one of the hotels
22:48Who are you?
22:48And they always have cabarets
22:50Fuck your men
22:52Which one are you?
22:55And now from the stage of the Deauville Hotel
22:58Here he is, Ed Sullivan
22:59Thank you very, very much
23:09Thank you
23:10Will you know?
23:14So very nice to be here
23:15Thank you, Ralph Renick
23:16For that very nice intro
23:17And now, this has happened again
23:20Last Sunday
23:20On our show in New York
23:22The Beatles played to the greatest TV audience
23:24That's ever been assembled
23:26In the history of American TV
23:28Now, tonight
23:29Here in Miami Beach
23:31Again, the Beatles face
23:33Our record-busting audience
23:36Ladies and gentlemen
23:40Here are four of the nicest jumps
23:43We've ever had on our stage
23:45The Beatles!
23:46Bring them on!
23:46Last boy
23:58Took my love away
24:04He'll regret it someday
24:10But this boy
24:15Wants you back again
24:19That boy
24:25Isn't good for you
24:32Though he may want you too
24:38This boy
24:42This boy wants you back again
24:44This boy wants you back again
24:46Oh, and this boy
24:52Could be happy
24:55Just to love you
24:59But oh, my
25:02That boy
25:05Won't be happy
25:09Tell me
25:13If you'll cry
25:16Use the maths, won't you
25:20Hacking
25:20Well, come on then
25:23Hang on
25:25Hang on
25:27Ouch
25:27You've got to stick everything in
25:30You know, you can hang it out there
25:32These youngsters from Liverpool, England
25:42And their conduct over here
25:44Not only as fine professional singers
25:46But as a group of fine youngsters
25:49Will they leave an imprint
25:51With everyone over here who's met them
25:53Okay
25:54Let's go
25:55Nobody ever made it
25:58In America
25:59And we were dying to be the first
26:01A lot of people had tried and failed in America
26:04We were just very confident
26:06Confidence was at an all-time high
26:08I felt we'd conquered America
26:11It was sort of an attitude we had
26:13Okay, we've conquered Sweden
26:15We've conquered France
26:16Yes, America was ours now
26:18Oh, yeah, I'll tell you something
26:28I think you'll understand
26:32When I say that something
26:35I want to hold your hand
26:39I want to hold your hand
26:43I want to hold your hand
26:46Oh, please
26:48What did you most like about the trip, Ringo?
26:50Oh, I just loved all of it, you know
26:51Especially Miami
26:52The sun, you know
26:53I didn't know what it meant
26:55Until I went over there
26:56Don't you get it up in Liverpool?
26:57No, they finished up there, you know
26:59Cut it out
27:01Did you ever have a chance, John
27:03To just get away on your own
27:05Without anybody recognising you?
27:07We borrowed a couple of millionaires' houses, you know
27:09Well, we did
27:11You could afford to buy a couple of millionaires' houses, couldn't you?
27:14No
27:14Oh, yeah, no
27:15Yeah, we're just going to borrow them, it's cheaper
27:16And we did a bit of water skiing
27:18Well, sort of
27:19Yeah, we had a great time
27:20Did your wife enjoy it over there?
27:22Yeah, she loved it
27:23Who?
27:23Who?
27:24Who?
27:25Shh, don't tell him he's married
27:26It's a secret
27:27Oh, I'm sorry
27:28I'm sorry about that
27:29I didn't mean to
27:29What about the taste of the fans over there?
27:32Did you find the same stuff?
27:33You never bit it
27:34Yeah
27:36Yeah
27:36We expected them to be very different
27:40But they weren't at all
27:41Yeah
27:42The accent was the only thing, you know
27:45It was the only difference
27:45Lovely
27:46Did they reckon you sang in an English accent or American accent?
27:49No, some fella said
27:50I'll come because you're from Britain
27:52And you're still singing in American accent or something
27:54Yeah
27:55Funny
27:55We've been trying to explain it to him
27:57That it's a Liverpool accent
27:58We are an American, you know
27:59But he won't believe it
27:59He kept it
28:00Oh, it's funny
28:00I hear anyway
28:01That the four of you are going to be millionaires by the end of the year
28:03Oh, that's nice
28:05Have you got time
28:06Have you got time to actually spend this money?
28:10What money?
28:13It's been a hard day's night
28:16And I've been working like a dog
28:19It's been a hard day's night
28:23I should be sleeping like a love
28:26But when I get home to you
28:28I find the things that you do
28:30Will make me feel alright
28:33We'd always, you know
28:34I'm talking about this progression with the Beatles
28:36From, you know, little stevedores and Dockers Union
28:39Cavern
28:41Better clubs
28:42You know
28:43So, films was one that we'd always thought
28:47We loved The Girl Can't Help It
28:48And we knew that in rock and roll you could get in a film
28:51How do you reckon that one out?
28:53I loved the pictures as a kid
28:56You know, I used to go a hell of a lot
28:58To the Beresford and the Gormans, you know, up in Liverpool
29:01Great memories from the Saturday morning pictures
29:07You know, whatever it was
29:08If it was a pirate movie, I would be a pirate
29:12You know, if it was a western Saturday morning after the movie
29:15I would come home as a cowboy
29:17I mean, it was great fantasy land for me
29:21Movies as a kid
29:22Well, we were interested in films
29:24And what happened was
29:25Brian started talking to people
29:27Knowing of our interest
29:30And he came up with Dick Lester's name
29:33And what he did
29:34The Running, Jumping, Standing Still film
29:36It's a short with Spike Milliger
29:38Classic little sort of comedy short
29:40It's about five minutes or something
29:41But I don't know if it's that funny now
29:43But it was very funny then
29:45So they got hold of Dick Lester
30:05And we were really pleased
30:07And Dick came around
30:08He was a bit of a musician
30:09He could play a bit of jazz piano
30:11So he was even more interesting
30:14He was American
30:16But he'd been working in Britain
30:18And he'd worked with the goons
30:19So that was kind of enough for us
30:21And he got hold of Alan Owen
30:23Who was a Welsh playwright
30:25And so he was a very likable Welsh bloke
30:27And he came and he hung out with us for a few days
30:29Which was great
30:29Because he picked up all the little sort of things
30:31He's very clean, isn't he?
30:33Picked up all the little sort of jokes
30:34And the sarcasm, you know, the sort of the Beatle way
30:38The humour, you know, John's wit
30:40And each one of us, Ringo's laconic humour
30:43So he picked up our characters, which was good
30:46Normally in pictures you do things back to front
30:48Like the end, you make a film of that on one day
30:52And then the next day you do the beginning
30:53But in this one, we almost did it in sequence
30:56So it was very exciting
30:57We got on a train at Marylebone Station one day
31:00And so the train took off and we were in a film
31:02Excuse me, have you seen that little old man we were with?
31:07And there were these little girls, schoolgirls in gym slips
31:09Who were actually models
31:11And we, of course, were quite fascinated with them
31:14And George married one
31:15Patty
31:16Patty Boyd was one of the girls on the train
31:19So I asked you to realise a lot of things before
31:26If this is love, you gotta give me more
31:30Give me more
31:32Hey, hey, hey
31:34Give me more
31:36The whole of the train bit, we're just going to pieces
31:40You know, I was so embarrassed about it all
31:42It was all so romantic
31:44With these lights and, you know
31:46Coming to work in the limo
31:48I mean, getting up early in the morning
31:50Wasn't the best thing we could do
31:52And especially, I mean, the scene in Hard Day's Night
31:57Where the one I actually got really good credit for
32:00Was the walking on the beach
32:01On the beach
32:03By the canal
32:04With the camera and that
32:06Like the lonely guy scene
32:08That came about because, you know
32:16I came directly to work
32:18Very unprofessional
32:20Straight from a nightclub
32:21And I was a little hungover, to say the least
32:24You know, I was just so out of it
32:26So we said, well, let's do anything
32:29And my version of it
32:32I said, well, just let me walk around and film me
32:34And why I look so cold and dejected
32:38Is because I felt like shit
32:40You know, so
32:41There's no acting going on
32:44I just felt so bad
32:46I was less embarrassed than the others
32:48You know, but I think John also got into the movie, too
32:52Hello
32:57Hello
32:58Oh, wait a minute
33:00No, I'm not
33:00Oh, you are
33:01I'm not
33:02Oh, you are, I know you are
33:03I'm not, no
33:04You look just like him
33:07Do I?
33:09You're the first one that said that ever
33:10Yes, you do, look
33:12No, my eyes are lighter
33:15All right, Noddy
33:16My nose
33:17Yes, your nose is very
33:19Is it?
33:20Well, I would have said so
33:21Oh, you know him better, though
33:22I do not
33:23He's only a casual acquaintance
33:24That's what you say
33:25What have you heard?
33:28It's all over the place
33:29Is it?
33:30Is it really?
33:31But I wouldn't have it
33:32I still could play it
33:33I knew I could rely on you
33:35Thanks
33:36You don't look like him at all
33:43She looks more like him than I do
33:51Alan Owen tried to write a scene
34:01Of us being harassed by the press
34:05Which was part of our daily duty, really
34:07And they were saying things
34:08You must have seen A Hard Day's Night
34:10Saying things like
34:11How did you find America?
34:13Turn left to Greenland
34:14What do you call that hairstyle?
34:17Arthur
34:18Has success changed your life?
34:20Yeah, I think it did
34:21Because, as I say, Alan hung around with us
34:23And was careful
34:24To try and put words into our mouths
34:27That he might have heard us speak
34:28Or that he thought
34:29So I think he did a very good script
34:32Leave them drums alone
34:36Oh, surely I could just have a little touch
34:38You so much as breathe heavy on them
34:40And I'm out on strike
34:40Aren't you being rather arbitrary?
34:43There you go
34:44Hiding behind a smoke screen
34:45Of bourgeois clichés
34:46I don't go messing about your earphones, do I?
34:49Spoil sport
34:50Well?
34:53He's very fussy about his drums, you know
34:56They loom large in his legend
34:57What's that?
35:00Oh, he's sulking again
35:01I'll show him
35:03If I fell in love with you
35:06Would you promise to be true
35:08And help me understand
35:12Cause I've been in love before
35:15And I found that love was more
35:18They didn't really get totally immersed
35:20In record production
35:21Until later on
35:22When they stopped touring
35:23There wasn't time
35:24They would dash into the studio
35:26Put down their tracks
35:27And they'd leave all the work really to us
35:29I mean, they were incredibly busy
35:31During those first years
35:33Before this dance is new
35:35I think I love you too
35:37I'm so happy when you dance with me
35:40If you look at our itinerary
35:43Some of those years
35:45Where we did maybe a tour of England
35:47A tour of Europe
35:48A tour of America
35:49Two albums
35:50And about four EPs
35:52And three singles
35:53And we made a movie
35:55All in the same year
35:56And you think
35:57Jesus, how did we do that?
36:00Okay, ready?
36:02Oh
36:02They're running
36:03A one, two, three, four
36:07You
36:08If you break my heart
36:11I'll go
36:12But I'll be back again
36:15The next few minutes
36:24Are in the lap of the gods
36:25And the hands of the Beatles
36:26Which means anything can happen
36:27We're going to hear
36:27Sort of versions of
36:28Songs from their film
36:30Gather round
36:31Famous film stars
36:32Another lads then
36:33Look, in my young days
36:36When I was a lad
36:37They used to have actors in films
36:38And now they
36:39Hey, listen
36:39It's all changed now
36:40It's all changed now
36:41Well, this is what a one bit
36:42No actors
36:43In those days
36:43The actors used to say
36:44Their best bits were left
36:45On the cutting room floor
36:46Did you find that?
36:47No
36:47No, no
36:49Those are the good bits in the film
36:50You said those in the rest
36:51Yes
36:52Rubbish
36:52Was it really?
36:53Even worse, yes
36:54Who was worse?
36:55Oh, Paul
36:55I see
36:56I think John was about the worst
36:58No, it was you
36:59Oh, Ringo was very good
37:00He was
37:01He's a good lad
37:01They're saying he's a new child chaplain
37:03You think he's right?
37:04New child chaplain
37:04Oh, yeah, he's an old one
37:05What can buy me love?
37:10I found it exciting
37:11I loved it
37:13Because there was a lot of comedy
37:14And people were saying
37:15Oh, you know
37:15They're young Marx brothers
37:17I think there was nothing else
37:18There'd never been a group of four people
37:20I suppose
37:21Doing comedy besides them
37:22But I think that was part of the thing
37:24That the Beatles were very funny
37:26I mean, they actually were funny
37:29Too much for money
37:30But money can buy me love
37:32Well, all of us liked
37:33The bit in the field
37:34And we all jump about like lunatics
37:37Because that's pure film
37:39As the director told us
37:40You know, it's just pure filming
37:42And we could have been anybody
37:43But we enjoy that
37:44I don't care too much for money
37:47But money can't buy me love
37:49Can't buy me love
37:52Everybody tells me so
37:55Can't buy me love
37:57No, no, no, no
38:01Say you don't need no diamond rings
38:04And I'll be satisfied
38:06Tell me that you want the kind of things
38:10That money just can't buy
38:12I don't care too much for money
38:16Money can't buy me love
38:18I don't care too much for money
38:19I don't care too much for money
38:21I don't care too much for money
38:22Can't buy me love
38:36Everybody told me so
38:39Can't buy me love
38:41No, no, no
38:44Say you don't need my diamond ring
38:48And I'll be satisfied
38:50Tell me that you want the kind of things
38:53The money just can't buy
38:55Cause I don't care too much for money
38:58Money can't buy me love
39:00Can't buy me love
39:02Love
39:05Can't buy me love
39:20Well, John, I believe you've written a book
39:22And this book's called John Lennon in his own right, folks
39:26John Lennon in his own right
39:27W-R-I-T, you see, it's a laugh
39:29It's a laugh a minute with John Lennon
39:31Some of you might find it a bit difficult to understand
39:36Because, you see, it's in a sort of funny lingo
39:39Well, we get it, you see
39:41It's full of laughs
39:42And I don't really know how you could describe it
39:46But I've never read anything like it
39:48You know, the stories are so funny
39:51I...
39:51Ha, ha
39:52Many little drawings which will make you laugh
39:54We also have the wrestling dog
39:56Once upon a time in a far-off distant land
39:58Far across the sea, miles away from anywhere
40:01Over the hills of the crow bark
40:0339 people lived miles away from anywhere
40:06On a little island on a distant land
40:08When Harvest Land came along
40:10All the people celebrated with a mighty feast and dancing and that
40:14It was Perry's
40:15Perry was the loud mare
40:16Job to provide
40:18And Perry's great pleasure, I might have
40:19A new and exciting
40:21And usually it was
40:22Drill and spectacular performer
40:24Sometimes
40:24A dwarf was used
40:26This year, Perry had surpassed himself by getting a wrestling dog
40:30But who would fight this wondrous beast?
40:35I wouldn't for a kick-off
40:36Won't get me fighting it, Dudley
40:37Mr John Lennon, sir
40:39Well, when we said you'd just written it
40:41Have you, in fact, just done it?
40:42Did you do it a long time ago?
40:44It's been a long time
40:45Long time
40:46How long?
40:47About 40 years or so, I think
40:48Come off it
40:49How long ago did you write this?
40:50It's a couple of years
40:50Some of it's old, some of it's new
40:52Something borrowed, something brown
40:53Is this the start of a big literary career for Lennon?
40:59I'm hoping to go straight, yes, I
41:01I mean, you've heard of literary lions
41:02We should have a literary Lennon in the future
41:04I get it
41:08You're with me?
41:08Have this been away?
41:10Yes, 27.28
41:12Uh, provision of subject
41:15Hello?
41:18Yes, sir, this is calling for the manager of the Beatles
41:20What is his name?
41:22May we have his name, please?
41:23Their manager's name is Mr. Brian Epstein
41:26Brian Epstein
41:27Epstein, what was the first name?
41:29B-R-Y-A-N-T-R-I-A-N
41:31The manager's name is Brian Epstein
41:34Well, he needed someone to write a book
41:35He needed someone to write what was called his autobiography
41:39I mean, he was only 29
41:40Well, then I went to a talkie with Brian
41:43Four days to write this potboiler with him
41:45A cellar full of noise
41:46And he said, the third day
41:48I've had a lovely, lovely idea, Derek
41:49I want you to join us
41:50Well, I thought, this is incredible
41:52This is the idea, that's all
41:54God, I'd given up on the idea of joining them
41:57For the time being, thinking if it happens, it happens
41:59So, uh
42:02After about 15 years on newspapers
42:05I just dropped out and joined the Beatles
42:07I was his, uh, Brian's personal assistant
42:10And then eventually their press officer
42:12Remember we played in Amsterdam
42:15Was when Derek first became
42:17Like, on tour with us
42:20It was all very exciting and wonderful
42:22But, uh
42:24I think only a madman would have
42:27Volunteered to join such a thing
42:29I'm gonna tell Aunt Mary
42:31My Uncle John
42:32He said he had to miss him
42:34But he got a lot of fun
42:35Oh, baby
42:36Yeah, now, baby
42:39Oh, baby
42:42So I'm running out
42:44We nearly didn't do that to him
42:48Yes, I was desperately ill
42:49I, uh, was having my tonsils out
42:52Yeah
42:53George is a very loyal person
42:56And he said, if Ringo's not part of the group
42:58It's not Beatles
43:00He said, I don't see we should do it
43:01I'm not gonna go
43:02What a guy
43:03I never knew that
43:04How many Beatles does it take
43:06To change a lightbulb, see?
43:08Four, huh?
43:09Ah
43:09Anyway, I could
43:11Yeah, I really despised
43:13The way we couldn't
43:15Ever make a decision for ourselves
43:18It was always like
43:18No, sorry
43:19Yeah
43:21But Ringo must go with us
43:23Sorry
43:23We'll get a new drummer
43:25I'm always welcome
43:29All right, Jimmy
43:35All right
43:35Got it
43:37Got it, Jimmy
43:38We got it
43:39Got it
43:39And it was very strange
43:41And, uh
43:42You know, because I wasn't well
43:45And they'd taken Jimmy Nichols
43:46And I thought they didn't love me anymore
43:48You know, and all that stuff went through my head
43:50I saw a good job
43:51With Long Dog's Alley
43:52I saw a merry coming
43:54And it's up in the alley
43:55Oh, baby
43:56Yeah, now, baby
43:59Ooh, baby
44:02It's up for tonight
44:04Ah
44:05Well, Long Dog's Alley
44:24Put his riches on
44:26Everything that Uncle John did
44:28Oh, baby
44:29Yeah, now, baby
44:32Ooh, baby
44:35Some fun at night
44:38Ah
44:38Well, we're gonna have some fun at night
44:59Have some fun at night
45:01Ooh, everything's all right
45:04Have some fun at night
45:07Have some fun at night
45:10Yeah, yeah, yeah
45:12We're gonna have some fun at night
45:15Have some fun at night
45:18Everything's all right
45:21Have some fun at night
45:23Yeah, we're gonna have some fun
45:26Some fun at night
45:28You're on, Jimmy
45:31Tell me whether you find it difficult
45:33To take over the role of Ringo
45:34Uh, no, not really
45:38No
45:38As far as Ringo, I can never
45:41I can never make up for what Ringo is, you know
45:44How long have you been doing this?
45:46Um, until next Thursday
45:47That's right, then
45:48So you're sort of understudy
45:49Yes, I am
45:50You think of a great break?
45:52Oh, yes
45:53Oh, yes
45:53Excellent
45:54Everything, you're good?
45:55I'm not
45:56How is Ringo, by the way?
45:58His throat is so sore
46:00You're trying to live on jelly and ice cream
46:02And I was a smoker in those days
46:04And I was smoking the next day
46:06And that was pretty rough
46:08Cause I told you once before goodbye
46:14But I came back again
46:18I love you so
46:21I'm the one who wants you
46:26Yes, I'm the one who wants you
46:30Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
46:33Oh, you could find better things to do
46:38Than to break my heart again
46:42Always good for a gagging, John, you know
46:46What do you expect to do in Hong Kong?
46:50Well, Bob
46:51Well, Bob
46:53In Hong Kong
46:54Um, you know, just sort of
46:57See what's happening, you know
46:59It's very different, isn't it, from what
47:01I've never seen before, I should imagine
47:03You think you'll get an opportunity to do any sightseeing
47:05Hope so
47:07Well, you could find better things to do
47:12Than to break my heart again
47:15Hong Kong was different
47:20It was all army personnel
47:21It was very funny
47:23We'd expected all Asian people
47:25It was all British army personnel
47:27I wanna go
47:31It was all these British people
47:34There weren't any Chinese there at that time
47:36It was a slightly sort of flat show
47:46As I say, it was in a smallish place
47:48They all sort of behaved themselves
47:50And they all looked like
47:51They all looked like a khaki audience
47:53You know, it was slightly strange
47:55But we just played
47:56I don't think we enjoyed the show too much
47:58We had these capes that were disasters when we hit Australia
48:18The rain hit them and the dye started coming out
48:22And they put the Beatles on the back of this, you know, flat-back truck
48:27Right, with Umbrellas
48:29Right, in these
48:30And they were wearing these capes, right?
48:33I was okay
48:34I was in the cab
48:35The driver wouldn't go any faster
48:37I kept saying, go faster
48:39It's pouring down
48:40And he'd say, these kids have been waiting here, you know, for 24 hours
48:45To see these guys
48:46Got to the hotel and everybody was blue
48:49Because the dye had soaked off these coats
48:52That were made in Hong Kong
48:54They played Amsterdam, Hong Kong
49:18And I met them in Australia
49:21And Australia was great, of course
49:23Because, you know, the flight is just horrendous to Australia
49:26It still is
49:27It's, you know, they may have shaved a couple of hours off the flight
49:30But it's still a hell of a long way
49:32And I remember getting off the plane
49:35And just feeling like a disaster area
49:37But Australia was fabulous
49:41I mean, it was great being back with the boys
49:43And back in the band
49:43And they'd bought me presents in Hong Kong
49:45And, you know, that was a really nice moment in the whole deal
49:50Once and one more thing
49:53It's very nice for all of us to have back with us now
49:57Ringo
49:57And then while I'm away
50:10I'll write home every day
50:13And I'll send all my lovin' to you
50:17I'll pretend that I'm kissing the lips I'm missing
50:21I'll pretend that I'm kissing the lips I'm missing
50:24And I'll send all my lovin' to you
50:27And I'll send all my lovin' to you
50:31I'll pretend that I'm kissing the lips I'm missing
50:39And hope that my tears will come free
50:43And then while I'm away
50:47I'll write home every day
50:51And I'll send all my lovin' to you
50:55All my lovin' to you
50:59I'll pretend you were
51:01All my lovin'
51:05Darling, I'll pretend you were
51:07Yes!
51:09The news from Down Under is that when the Beatles arrived in Adelaide
51:14They were greeted by 300,000 fans
51:17Which isn't surprising when you consider that the Beatles
51:19Occupy the top six placings on the Australian chart
51:23It looks as though Australia is truly in the grip of Beatlemania
51:26Hurry home, boys!
51:31That was like hero's welcome, that was
51:34That was the kind of thing where you'd go to the town hall
51:36And they'd all be in the centre
51:38We quite enjoyed all that stuff
51:40It could get a bit wearing
51:42But that certainly was
51:43And when there was that many people
51:44You know, you were just flabbergasted
51:47Yeah, shocked and stunned
51:49Just happy that it was, you know
51:51Oh, we're still popular down here too
51:54Nice feeling
51:54And everybody's saying
51:55Oh, there's more people here than came to see the Queen
51:57Well, she thinks so
51:59She didn't have any hit records
52:00You know, it's funny
52:01But there was more people came to see us there than anywhere
52:05I mean, it looked like
52:06I think the whole of Australia was there
52:07Well, we were on the roof of
52:09Some hotel
52:12I don't know if it was Sydney or Adelaide or where it was
52:15But it was Australia
52:16And there was thousands
52:17Thousands and thousands of kids
52:19And one of the things that stuck out in my mind was that
52:22Or in my memory
52:25There was some guy on crutches
52:28I don't know why I just was focused in on this guy at the time
52:31And he was shouting and getting all excited
52:35And I actually saw him like throw his crutches away
52:39You know, sort of like he was healed
52:40And he fell right in his face
52:43I mean, he just fell over
52:45So, before we go
52:47We'd like to say
52:48To all of you
52:50Here tonight
52:52And to everybody
52:53Who's sort of coming along to see us on this tour
52:56We'd like to say thank you
52:58All very much for coming along
52:59It was lovely
53:00Thank you
53:01Thank you very much
53:04I got something to say that might cause you pain
53:15I got you talking to that boy again
53:18I'm gonna let you down
53:21And leave you glad
53:23Because I told you before
53:28Oh, you can't do that
53:31Oh, you can't do that
53:37You can't do that
53:41You can't do that
53:45You can't do that
53:49You can't do that
53:52Everybody's free
53:57Cause I'm the one who won your love
54:03But if they see
54:05You're talking that way
54:09They laugh in my face
54:12So please listen to me
54:14If you wanna stay mine
54:15I can't help my feelings
54:17I go out of my mind
54:19I'm gonna let you down
54:21Let you down
54:23And leave you glad
54:24Gonna let you down
54:25And leave you glad
54:27Because I told you before
54:29Oh, you can't do that
54:32Even though we felt
54:39Yes, we're established
54:40And we've conquered all these countries
54:41And we're selling a lot of records
54:43And they all love us
54:45You know, I don't think we
54:48Or I didn't feel like
54:49It's still gonna go on forever
54:51And when you first see yourself
54:59On a big screen
55:00You just watch yourself
55:01You're thinking
55:02Oh, look at my
55:02Look at that ear
55:03Oh, look at my nose
55:04You know, look at my hair stick
55:05And each one of us did that
55:07But when I get home to you
55:09I find the things that you do
55:11Will make me feel alright
55:14You know I work all day
55:18To get your money
55:19To buy a thing
55:21And it's worth it
55:23Just to hear you say
55:24You're gonna give me everything
55:28So why on earth should I moan?
55:30Because when I get you alone
55:32You know I feel okay
55:35When I'm home
55:37Everything seems to be right
55:41When I'm home
55:44Feeling you holding me tight
55:47Tight, yeah
55:50It's been a hard day this night
55:52And I've been working like a dog
55:56It's been a hard day this night
55:59I should be sleeping like a dog
56:03But when I get home to you
56:05I find the things that you do
56:07Will make me feel alright
56:10They're very supportive
56:13The Liverpool people
56:14They loved us getting on
56:16You know
56:16Well, they felt we were traitors
56:18When we left
56:18But the whole town was behind us
56:22We heard that we're finished
56:23In Liverpool, you see
56:24And after a bit
56:25We began to believe it
56:26We thought
56:26We don't want to go home
56:27You know
56:28If they're gonna do that
56:28We'll just sneak home
56:30To our houses
56:30And, you know
56:33They kept going on
56:34People saying
56:34Oh, I've been down the cab
56:35And they don't like it anymore
56:37Of course
56:37They're talking to people
56:38That didn't even know us
56:39Then anyway
56:40We went back
56:41And it was
56:41It was one of the best ever
56:42You say you will love me
56:55If I have to go
56:56If I have to go
56:57If I have to go
56:58You'll be thinking of me
57:02Somehow I will know
57:04Some day when I'm lonely
57:06Some day when I'm lonely
57:09Wishing you weren't so far away
57:12Then I will remember
57:15Things we said today
57:18You say you'll be mine
57:22You say you'll be mine
57:24You say you'll be mine
57:24Girl
57:24Till the end of time
57:27These days such a kind girl
57:31Seems so hard to find
57:34Some day when we're dreaming
57:38Deep in love not a lot to say
57:42Then we will remember
57:45Things we said today
57:48Me, I'm just the lucky kind
57:52Love to hear you say
57:55That love is love
57:57And though we may be blind
57:59Love is here to stay
58:02And that's enough
58:03To make you mine
58:06Girl
58:06Be the only one
58:09Love me all the time
58:13Girl
58:13We'll go on and on
58:16Some day when we're dreaming
58:20Deep in love not a lot to say
58:24Then we will remember
58:27Things we said today
58:30Me, I'm just the lucky kind
58:34Love to hear you say
58:37That love is love
58:38And though we may be blind
58:41Love is here to stay
58:44And that's enough
58:45To make you mine
58:48Girl
58:48Be the only one
58:51Love me all the time
58:55Girl
58:55We'll go on and on
58:58Some day when we're dreaming
59:02Deep in love not a lot to say
59:06Then we will remember
59:08Then we will remember
59:09Things we said today
