00:00:00we went to a bonafide laboratory for a very thorough test of your water and as you can
00:00:10see here this is actually a warning health risk exists I left here a few years ago thinking we
00:00:20were heroes and now we find out today I was wrong in the rugged Wyoming hill country we've got threats
00:00:31coming from everywhere the black family's rescue two years ago was a story of triumph that water's
00:00:37coming from the well over tragedy it's the craziest thing I've ever heard on any home set
00:00:44but in the past year oh my gosh this is from hail yeah no way catastrophic weather
00:00:51crumbling infrastructure it started as freezing rain and the next thing you knew the coop collapsed
00:00:57and a life-threatening water mystery we can't use it in the house or for ourselves at all
00:01:02have overwhelmed the family and wiped out their food supply that's not something I want for my
00:01:08family I'd like to feel like I'm not just trying to survive through it anymore
00:01:14now with winter once again promising destructive conditions Marty responds to their new cry for
00:01:22help the pendulum is swinging we're running out of time to put the black family back on the path to
00:01:28success before it's too late when you drive around in rural Wyoming you're reminded that this is the least populated state
00:01:51first time I ever drove down this road right here it was in the middle of summer right now winter's coming
00:02:00I'm Jody Lundgren I'm Jamie Black we live here in Black Hills of Wyoming with Jody's sister and our two kids we inherited this place in 2006 the original dream for this property that my parents had was to be self-sufficient and be able to take care of themselves
00:02:27but my parents passed away before they were able to finish
00:02:32it was devastating for a while I mean we really wanted it to work and it just we weren't seeing a way
00:02:41you know and then the Rainey's visited that first time and we got our footing
00:02:50and with that I was able to attack this homestead with a new passion I was able to achieve things that I had just dreamt about previously
00:03:02we've done some landscaping we've done some permaculture swales we've been able to add more livestock and infrastructure
00:03:11and we've been able to be a part of our community and sell our goods through the farmers market to our community members
00:03:20but despite their successes weather conditions have become more extreme than they prepared for each year and the blacks struggle to adapt
00:03:30in the winter we can get 48 inches of snow and 70 mile per hour gusts
00:03:37the hail has been a huge problem that we really didn't anticipate when the hail storm wiped out our garden we were left with
00:03:48Misty's greenhouse as our primary source it was hard to feed the entire family on that you know there's just so many threats
00:03:57even just the other day we had a day-long rain event in mid-november and my ducks were out in it all day
00:04:04and the couple must have been off by themselves and they just you know they basically froze they were too wet and cold
00:04:11but the family's difficulty producing food is the least of their new problems I started noticing with the well water that my seedlings weren't growing and you know then I started noticing some livestock
00:04:18digestion issues it was hard on the confidence because I'm like other people can do this I mean even in Misty's greenhouse the water is a challenge there it didn't thrive it wasn't thriving as much as we thought it should be
00:04:25I mean at a certain point ends don't meet you don't have enough hours in the day and you know that my seedlings weren't growing and you know then I started noticing some livestock
00:04:33digestion issues it was hard on the confidence because I'm like other people can do this I mean even in Misty's greenhouse the water is a challenge there it didn't thrive
00:04:42it didn't thrive it wasn't thriving as much as we thought it should be I mean at a certain point ends don't meet
00:04:51you don't have enough hours in the day to compensate for systems that aren't functioning correctly
00:04:59without the ability to safely raise livestock without the ability to grow crops
00:05:11you're one step closer to falling out of homesteading
00:05:16my kids that's not something I want them to do
00:05:20it's so important for them to see that it can be done finally
00:05:24there'll be adults soon enough and be making decisions about this place
00:05:28so if we don't you know really show it to them now we don't have much time left
00:05:33Marty I could really use your help
00:05:36hello I gotta say Wyoming homesteaders are very fortunate people it's beautiful
00:05:46how long has it been since I've been here two years yeah about two years all right
00:05:50well have they all been good days in the last two years there's been some challenges
00:05:55like what um hail storms taking out gardens for one was it all across Wyoming or just here
00:06:03you know out here it's microclimates and you never know if you're gonna be in the spot where it's gonna dump
00:06:08a microclimate is a weather condition confined to a relatively small area ranging from a few square feet to several miles
00:06:18the unique geological features of the Black Hills combined with the temperature extremes found in the region
00:06:27can produce an intense variety of meteorological events such as deadly hail storms heavy rain and even unannounced snowfall
00:06:37the changes in the last several years have seen increased volatility in conditions
00:06:44bringing colder winters devastating storms and hotter drier summers
00:06:50I mean we've had other hail storms but this just this most recent summer
00:06:56knocked our garden out about that time of year where it's too late to start over
00:06:59so it can get to be baseball you know bigger grapefruit even
00:07:04it took the leaves off of almost everything
00:07:07is it already snowed?
00:07:08oh yeah
00:07:09yes for sure
00:07:10we had eight to ten inches of wet heavy stuff
00:07:11you know that's the thing for both the livestock and the gardens is you can have snow in June
00:07:16and we did in May
00:07:17um that May snowstorm took out our our hoop coop
00:07:21it started as freezing rain so with the coop it just that freezing rain stuck and then it started falling off the trees
00:07:27and the next thing you knew the coop collapsed and I had some losses and so we had to totally rebuild that
00:07:33because of the weather those animals keep my family alive to have a hail event or any weather event destroy your garden or lose some livestock that very potentially could be a meal that one or some of us have to skip and that's that's not something I'm gonna do for my children so it's you know those issues need to be resolved
00:07:58well it's put away for winter for now
00:08:01um other than that this is the garden that got beat down and destroyed by the hail storm and I'm not a hundred percent sure I can show you in Misty's greenhouse that there might be something wrong with that water
00:08:13there's an awful lot of build up on those pipes so copy that getting seedling started in that made it you know that's why you're looking at an empty garden instead of obvious plants in every row
00:08:24though the water quality is in question now two years ago Misty brought fertilized water to the greenhouse via a special aquaponics system so aquaponics uses fish waste as fertilizer I'm just putting my own little homestead twist on that and using it as a
00:08:41homestead twist on that and using ducks for that fertilizer you have your 16 gallon ish reservoir and this ladder system that's basically feeding itself with this perfect fertilized water so now we're ready for plants
00:08:56but since that time something has changed and the duquaponics system isn't working like it should
00:09:03okay what am I looking at here please this is the hydroponic system and so it's a great example of concentrated water
00:09:12wow these were your attempts to start right and so when seedlings get this big and die it's hard to
00:09:22that's amazing wow what is this crust on top yeah that's whatever is in the water did anything ever grow when we used potable water do we have sulfur do we have salt I don't know so we wanted to test this first this water problem is still plaguing this homestead and that's bad news for me
00:09:51oh my gosh this is from hail yeah no way yeah that was the storm that's thick yeah that looks dangerous
00:10:03is it ever killed an animal here chicken bird duck we lost maybe 10 meat birds that couldn't get under a
00:10:09anything in town wow that's that's actually tragic and that's actually very telling I'm glad you showed me that
00:10:16yeah
00:10:22do these chickens go to the roost every night yeah they are trained why is there an egg right there
00:10:28and why is there an egg right there yes so we've used different nesting boxes but because they were in a different area then we moved them here and we're about to move them over there can you show me the nesting box area whatever the plan is yeah after that
00:10:44after you please last time I was here in Wyoming these guys did not have chickens but they do now because I see eggs all over the place I think it's time that I get the latest poop on where's the coop
00:11:02so I got enough here to make an omelet tell me what I'm looking at right now please so we just have these like little like crates that we put in there so these are what we're gonna be using for nesting boxes we're gonna just put some straw in but we're kind of waiting to move them over to their their new area let's go look at the at the place that you're gonna move these and that's where the ducks are right yep
00:11:28all right so what are we looking at here this was the original hoop coop that Matt built right so we moved the ducks over there extended this all the way out and then rebuilt this one which we intend to put our chickens over here
00:11:48unaware the homestead fowl would face this level of weather threat when the rainies originally arrived I'm looking at a bunch of ducks yeah we're mostly relying on the ducks for our meat source Matt tackled another imminent and grave threat the predators out here are relentless in the morning you'll go out and see that your ducks have half of their head
00:12:18missing while I'm missing while I'm here I gotta make sure as much as possible that they're gonna be safe little good news a little bad news yes it does seem like Matt's hoop coop did protect the ducks from predators in the summer
00:12:34but it does seem like the winters in Wyoming have been pretty hard on the chickens and the ducks we need a better structure to protect them year round how cold does it get here in Wyoming this part average teens overnight but we'll we can get 30 below with no wind chill there's some hard nights where we worry about how many we're gonna lose when's the last time a duck died in this area over here
00:13:04and that most recent rain event it doesn't dry out because on bare ground they would never they'd never get dry well I'll be honest with you I'm looking at some wet ducks right now
00:13:17after listening to these homesteaders walking around for a few minutes I think it's pretty clear that it's kind of all about food we have to fix the water problems on this property so they can grow food and raise crops
00:13:31and we also have to make it completely safe for all the livestock here otherwise there's no food and there's no water
00:13:43okay guys it snowed 10 inches a week ago yeah I don't think we're gonna be planting any food while we're here right so what are we gonna do obviously the elephant in the room is what are we gonna do with this water yeah
00:13:56right that might not might not be the best for plants and it might not be the best for the animals on the homestead and the owners of the homestead
00:14:05refuse to drink it okay so we've got our work cut out for us yeah I learned this from Matt if chickens are happy you'll get more eggs it sounds corny but it's true
00:14:17they've got food water they're warm they're safe you're gonna get more egg production and if we did build
00:14:24a new building on this homestead where the ducks would be warmer dryer safer then maybe the chickens could
00:14:32rent a room in that same structure there's only one word for that building
00:14:38it's four letters and it starts with a B what is it
00:14:44barn barn okay when Marty first presented the barn idea to me I just it was like a simple solution that
00:14:54had just never really been addressed it was exciting and surprising to even consider that a barn is a major
00:15:03component of infrastructure if we can do something about this water and be able to use that well fully
00:15:08like huge these are huge huge things for us this family has a lot of plants I want to lasso them rain them
00:15:18in and have them design a barn and they're going to draw the plans it's a little overwhelming but I trust you
00:15:27all right pick that location thank you hold on you guys when you set these blocks get them level that log over
00:15:38the top that could kill somebody so think about how you're bracing them coming in look out
00:15:44let's go
00:15:53in the black hills of Wyoming
00:15:59Marty waits for water test results
00:16:03but time is of the essence so he Jamie and Jessica
00:16:07who wants to build a barn
00:16:11focus first on a warm safe home for the animals
00:16:15where?
00:16:16right up here
00:16:17right up there
00:16:18I'll follow you
00:16:19alright
00:16:20winter is right around the corner and these homesteaders are not prepared
00:16:25I'm thinking that if all of us put our heads together we can build a barn and bring multiple animals into it
00:16:34where I'm confident even though I'll be gone those animals can survive and maybe even thrive during a long cold windy Wyoming winter
00:16:47alright so guys let's talk a little bit why am I standing here please
00:16:51I think this is a great spot to build in a bank barn lower levels dug in the earth will keep it warm
00:16:57a bank barn is traditionally a two story structure built into a hillside or bank in order to take advantage of the natural landscape for infrastructure offering door accessibility on two levels
00:17:11building into the earth also harnesses geothermal energy that provides natural heat to the structure which is critical for keeping animals warm in colder climates
00:17:23all right I hear everything you're saying
00:17:28sure
00:17:29my main thing is
00:17:30it's a long ways for power
00:17:31yeah
00:17:32and then water what are we doing for water
00:17:33if we build this building these are the things we got to figure out
00:17:37a couple years ago I was right here in Wyoming trying to get water out of a 1,000 foot deep well just to the house
00:17:46but now we got to figure out how to get that water safely underground to the bar
00:17:52that's going to require a trench at the same time we're trying to clean up the water for both the house and the barn
00:18:00if I think about getting this passive heat from the sun on the shortest day of the year December 21st
00:18:06so does that mean that we could take out some of these trees right there
00:18:11yeah a few of those trees would be fine
00:18:13yeah because I'm not going to be happy
00:18:15right putting a barn somewhere where I'm going to be in shade in December
00:18:18and the you know if their summer runs right down the hill that's perfect
00:18:22bring them up here in the winter take advantage of the sun and heat and take them down into the shade in the summertime
00:18:28you know when the rainies came there was such an acute need for what we ended up building
00:18:34and where we ended up building it because of the time of year and it was built for what we had then
00:18:41so a winter barn is just an amazing idea to be able to move them up give release to the summer spaces and vice versa
00:18:48we're also talking about moving the chickens the same thing I saw two years ago
00:18:54while Marty's goal now is to make sure the family's protein sources get enough sun to survive the winter
00:19:01their original challenge was the brutal summer when the problem was too much sun
00:19:07we need to talk
00:19:08yeah
00:19:09I think these ducks are in the wrong spot
00:19:11why
00:19:12they have no shade
00:19:13okay
00:19:14here's the truth bomb
00:19:15you ready for it
00:19:16what's great about that structure right there
00:19:19yeah
00:19:20is you guys built it so it could be moved
00:19:23yes it's two skids and then framed floor
00:19:26where the ducks are right now is not safe they are out in the sun it's way too hot
00:19:33yeah let's go
00:19:36let's get them cooled down
00:19:38the best and fastest way to get these ducks moved is to just throw them all in the duck parlor
00:19:44and move everything over at the same time
00:19:47look at them go
00:19:48there we go
00:19:50slow down let them go
00:19:51good job
00:19:52good job
00:19:54good job
00:19:55we'll see you on the other side
00:19:57it is 105 degrees and inside that parlor it could be 5 to 10 degrees hotter
00:20:07the only risk that I see and it's a big one is if a strap breaks then you have all these sitting ducks inside a hot box with no pen to go do and that can't happen
00:20:20move in the chickens which what's your input on that
00:20:47it shouldn't be too far away i mean the kids walk this the rainy road all the time it's called the
00:20:53rainy road yeah oh wow of course we need the bar on rainy road wait a minute didn't you work on it
00:20:58too oh yeah what can we say oh wait how can we say clint first oh sorry sorry i'm teasing the
00:21:07clint rainy road okay now another thing do me a favor right now the four of us are going to stand
00:21:13on the corners where are the front two corners mom and dad me and you will be on the back
00:21:19how big can you go come into about 24 20 24 right about there and then is that don't look at me
00:21:27look at the sun yeah look at your property yeah like then another thing i mean predators when's
00:21:35the last time you guys saw a bear here two summers ago when's the last time you saw a mountain lion
00:21:39in this area a week ago when's the last time you saw a coyote or heard one yesterday so those are
00:21:46all really bad answers wyoming is home to one of the largest predator populations in all the lower 48
00:21:54due to its diverse ecosystem in addition to being one of only a handful of states with both grizzlies
00:22:02and black bears the region's wolves mountain lions coyotes weasels venomous snakes and birds of prey
00:22:11such as eagles hawks and owls leave livestock under constant attack from both land and air
00:22:22just have to keep that in mind when we build it yeah we'll dig this material out we'll broadcast it
00:22:27out across there and double the size of this footprint okay okay but i like your geothermal
00:22:33idea of robbing some heat from the ground being in the bank uh but we have to think about predators
00:22:39we've got to think about water we've got to think about power to protect the black family's livestock
00:22:46from extreme winter weather marty will first carve the structure's foundation into the hillside making use
00:22:53of the geothermal warmth from the earth then using timber from the homestead he will build out the
00:23:00exterior framing making sure to maximize the passive heat from the sun year round then with the black
00:23:08family's input he will build individual holding spaces for all the homestead's livestock tailor-made for
00:23:15their needs to increase survivability as well as production and finally he will install a reinforced
00:23:23metal roof to protect against heavy snow and extreme hail storms
00:23:34to know that this barn will be properly insulated and have the ability to take care of my animals all
00:23:40winter and not have to worry about it that's i mean that's that's amazing that's much more production
00:23:47that much more ability to thrive out here go up there uh three feet mark 20 and here i come thank you
00:24:06so marty um really did throw us a curve ball we had no idea that maybe a barn would be on the table
00:24:13and it's like the perfect thing when marty explained that and the relationship of that barn and using
00:24:19it in the winter because we're set up for summer where we are it it all made so much sense
00:24:32i'm kind of like you kind of shocked and embarrassed that you didn't think of it but that's what you get
00:24:36out of something like this marty bringing back his expertise and his perspective totally unexpected but
00:24:42as soon as he said i'm like that is it that that's totally what we need right now all right i'm not
00:24:49sure it's been an hour since we talked about build the barn here and that's what got done so far yeah
00:24:55stuff can happen right yeah if you have a plan
00:24:57okay so on this side is where we're dreaming big we are excited to add a dairy cow to the farm okay hold
00:25:11on you guys are struggling with the animals that you already have
00:25:15have you had a chance to look at a few trees you might donate to this barn build on the black
00:25:30family's wyoming homestead there's a couple of big ones back in there and they're all within walking
00:25:35distance marty makes jamie and jody the master planners of their re-rescue okay you start walking
00:25:43i'll go get us all meet you there sounds good somewhere up on that hill yep you'll see you there
00:25:47thanks where we going right here
00:25:56how many do you need well it'd be nice to have at least four okay yeah i got four about this size
00:26:02marked out through here so that's good news
00:26:06this tree right perfect i mean
00:26:08i don't want to cut a tree down but you have 40 acres nope and this tree is going to be put to good
00:26:17use right yeah yeah let's see where it wants to fall i might get cut up so this could be a little
00:26:25dangerous this is one of those trees you can't predict let's see if it'll fall straight towards
00:26:30the barn that'd be yeah it'll be less work and be that much further why don't you go over to that next
00:26:35tree and that's probably going to be safe okay then we'll uh think about lengths and things like
00:26:42that sure okay everybody happy yeah you sure yeah all right i'll ask them that in four days
00:26:51here we go i would have never suggested that we could build a barn in four days unless
00:26:58i was standing in the middle of a 40 acre homestead that's heavily wooded and this one is
00:27:08while marty plans to build using materials found on the homestead
00:27:15one two three four five two years ago misty turned to materials found off the homestead
00:27:23when it comes to building a greenhouse glass can get expensive so we've scored about 10 doors
00:27:31that obviously need some repurposing but when it comes to free you can't really beat it
00:27:37you know i definitely love repurposing things so i love the history that's contained in old objects
00:27:43i really like this old firefighter sticker on this door leave it i'm gonna i'm totally gonna
00:27:49it um it reminds me of jamie's dad oh yeah jamie's dad was a fireman after jamie's parents died i know
00:28:00jamie felt a lot of responsibility to do things right here i know he looked up to his dad a lot
00:28:06it's pretty cool so we'll kind of we'll leave it on there we'll make it kind of a centerpiece for jamie
00:28:11this is really crazy we found all these windows at the salvage yard that matt went to
00:28:18as we're cleaning the windows we find this oh wow that is it's like your dad wanted to say hi
00:28:28right i thought what a sweet reminder of your dad that's touching that's right sorry no you're good
00:28:34i wish they were here i'm sorry they're not but i know that you guys will be here i know you have
00:28:43a long long future ahead of you can't pry me away from here now no no
00:28:47one two three push and now run
00:29:03thank you very much
00:29:09we're going to use this log as beams you just saved thousands of dollars that's awesome
00:29:16where's clay let's go we'll leave it long come on in we'll grab it here we go i guess we'll go down
00:29:25further everyone is going to get a little crazy but you can stay there for now where's the next tree
00:29:32oh yeah let's go my attitudes really changed since the first time that marty was here
00:29:40i came out from under a shadow you know boys have a tendency to feel that their fathers
00:29:48are 100 feet tall and when i lost him i didn't want to mess with his homestead
00:29:55but it's so i'm i'm excited to do what i want to do
00:30:01what clint doesn't know is i got my sauce stuck i'm too embarrassed to tell him
00:30:07so when this moves maybe i get it back everything's fine clark
00:30:17you'll never know if a tree falls in the forest
00:30:21yeah and you don't hear it that's because you're not building a barn
00:30:25the pace that everyone's moving at is so incredible you know we went from
00:30:36find a spot to a couple hours later we had trees down we had a pad flattened out to grade
00:30:43we had everything we need to go to get a jump start on tomorrow and it was it was only two hours i can't
00:30:47wait to see what a whole day tomorrow brings
00:30:58it's day two on the black family's homestead and this morning's freeze is a reminder that the wicked
00:31:05wyoming winter is right around the corner
00:31:11well good morning morning too building a barn you know family and i were up all night trying to
00:31:20decide what kind of footprint we wanted inside the space what we dreamt before we fell asleep all night
00:31:29so it's been it's been pretty amazing
00:31:34okay so we have the new area for the ducks and the chickens that'll work on this side is
00:31:43where we're dreaming big with our future we are excited to add a dairy cow to the farm
00:31:49okay hold on did i hear you say milk cow yeah
00:31:53yeah but it seems like you guys are struggling with the animals that you already have
00:32:00this couple is overwhelmed i get it at some point these homesteaders need to stop and listen
00:32:09because my job is to protect both life and property and on this homestead in that order
00:32:19when i hear milk call i think about how much work it is you guys ready for that
00:32:30how are you nice to see you again you guys are like taller everything i do isn't for me anymore
00:32:38gonna have to go down disa for my kids to be the third generation to work this homestead
00:32:45that's what i'm doing this for
00:32:58when i grew up i i had a dairy cow five and six o'clock in the morning milking that cow before i
00:33:03walked believe it or not a mile and a half almost to the bus stop and back every night that was my life
00:33:11so when i hear milk call i think about how much work it is yeah you got you guys ready for that
00:33:16yeah well we home school and it's going to be a great teaching tool for them and an opportunity to
00:33:20learn like where their cheese they eat comes from they were excited to start milking years ago at this
00:33:26point yeah obviously last time we were here no one was talking about bringing a milk cow to the property
00:33:34so this time around looking at these animals and listening how they're going to bring more
00:33:42i think we need to build a barn big enough to get the job done
00:33:48all right so go right to those concrete blocks
00:33:52so look where she's standing me that's 20. we just built one of these in georgia and it was really
00:33:58hard in a week a week to build a 24 by 24. okay so every foot's gonna count you have a pick a good
00:34:06pick yeah we need it we need to pick a couple shovels and then we'll get this to grade and we'll put these
00:34:11four corners in and we'll start building okay thank you
00:34:17when the rainies first visited they set me up for success and i took that success and i ran with it
00:34:24unfortunately to have a hail event or any weather event destroy your garden or lose some livestock
00:34:33i can't rely on it to feed my family and i know that marty's barn is gonna stop what i thought would
00:34:40be inevitable losses if we had a hard winter it's just a great feeling to know that my animals are in
00:34:45a spot but they're safe we can pull it off but we're gonna need help because we don't have the
00:34:55manpower and i'm only here four days fortunately jamie managed to gather some volunteers what's going
00:35:04on here who who's this that's my cousin scott scott who larson scott larson molly mcdowell molly
00:35:11that's a good name my wife's name's molly awesome never met a molly i didn't like
00:35:20what state is number one when it comes to being the least populated boom wyoming
00:35:31the good news is we've got a couple extra helpers on this homestead and now it is possible we could
00:35:38build a barn in four days while marty relies on the help of friends and family for the barn build
00:35:48two years ago
00:35:51i had something weird happen there there's there's tight spots another homestead necessity required
00:35:58some outside assistance at 500 feet there seems to be an obstruction
00:36:05if we can't get a pump down this well then we're in big trouble and so we've had to tap into the locals
00:36:17that'll work how deep are the wells normally in this area in this general area we're anywhere from 80 feet
00:36:24to 500 feet i should tell you this a few hundred feet down there was a restriction that might be a
00:36:32problem if we send a pump down there on top of that there's no well log that anybody can find yeah a
00:36:39lot of unknowns on this because it wasn't ever finished well you have no idea what you're really
00:36:45doing here you're basically saving a family that has some serious issues trying to carry on their
00:36:51parents dream we know very little about this well i think there's water in there but we're never gonna
00:36:59know until we drop a well pump down the well casing so we are in your debt well i'm proud to help
00:37:09well what do you say we get started all i think i need is a ditch for a pitless okay i'll jump in that
00:37:14excavator i really appreciate it yep who's ready to go to work now with much needed outside help
00:37:25marty prepares newly felled trees for use as the structure's main supports i'm ready to grab two
00:37:33logs for the front and the log for the top the first job i ever had wasn't choking little logs like this
00:37:41on the olympic peninsula we had trees that were not six feet not eight feet but up to 12 foot across
00:37:49then i moved to alaska at the age of 18 and in southeast alaska the trees were eight and ten feet as well
00:38:00i've always loved trees i don't like cutting trees but i do love working with trees
00:38:08every homestead it seems like we're either cutting a danger tree and that's how it's done
00:38:14sometimes we're planting trees and many of those homesteads are saving me money because they have
00:38:23trees this size that we can manage we can maneuver we can use as structural elements in a construction
00:38:31like a barn a pine tree pull barn we're coming in look out
00:38:45so now that i've got the logs ready to stand up it's time to put the black family to work what do you
00:38:50got let's see what do you got your building's going to sit on it so get it flat in the bottom
00:38:55why would we go to all that effort just for a foundation well think about it if it's not done
00:39:03properly the thing will crumble this is the concrete pilaster that they brought out here obviously it
00:39:13was meant to receive a nice little four by four straight from the store that ain't happening out
00:39:20here stores a long ways away and it costs money we got trees so we'll just produce a nice little
00:39:27tenon we'll drop it in this square and it's as simple as making a square peg going a square hole boom
00:39:41we're gonna set it on the square to square okay and then you're gonna hold it up you have to be in
00:39:46there with hands on okay it's not that big of a deal now but when we set look behind you yeah
00:39:51that log over the top that could kill somebody so think about how you're bracing them okay
00:40:00bring him in let's go hold on is there is there a drill in your hand
00:40:04are there screws in your hand is there a two by four brace in your hand
00:40:08hold on you guys you don't have this you don't have this perfectly level you guys when you set
00:40:18these blocks get them level level as a stone biscuit spin it towards the other way other way please
00:40:26okay come on down quit
00:40:29okay i'm cutting him loose now listen big guy i would dig a hole for that just kick it in there
00:40:41just so it can't go
00:40:47we're gonna put a thousand pound log on is it gonna fall on me or we're good we'll get you
00:40:59done now we'll see if it'll stay clint see if it'll stay
00:41:25when you're working fast cutting down trees dragging them over to the build site grabbing
00:41:32them with an x balancing them fitting them in place the margin for error narrows people can get hurt
00:41:44perfect this family they've been paying attention they are listening and collectively we are actually
00:41:52building a very solid and precise post and beam structure all right that was a really really
00:41:59good work for logs and chainsaws chains bells whistles and yo-yos that said let's we'll drill it
00:42:06put some rebar in it on this homestead we are trying to build a barn in a couple days we're getting
00:42:14there but the pendulum is swinging over into this area that i feel on every homestead we're running out
00:42:22of time we've got to get it finished before winter let's go pull it left pull your way a little bit
00:42:28clean it up done thank you come get another one
00:42:39well thanks for helping us with the logging that said when we started i didn't even know we were
00:42:46going to talk about bringing a milk cow to the property so right now we're going to need more materials
00:42:53than what are laying around this homestead we're going to need a lot of lumber it seems like doesn't
00:42:59matter if we're in alaska texas wyoming it doesn't matter where we go there's good people and those
00:43:09good people sometimes donate look around turn around please oh this south dakota lumber yard donated
00:43:20three loads of lumber i certainly am in uh appreciation of them helping you which
00:43:28helps me too so three bunks of building supplies are going to help us build a barn so grateful
00:43:36it's something else i mean that's incredible yeah uh you know having stuff donated like that is
00:43:43i don't have words just i don't have words
00:43:46jimmy's a generous guy with the little that we have so to have other people he's generous to
00:43:54everybody always well you know what i was about to say i guess all we would ask is to pay it forward but
00:44:01i don't need to say it based on what your wife just said it sounds like you're already that guy you're
00:44:06already those people that was very emotional for us you know jamie is always giving he's always been
00:44:14generous but we've kind of kept to ourselves a little bit up here so it's hard to think that
00:44:19anybody knows or cares on that note thanks to to this generous neighbor
00:44:25what's going on here every time i look up there's more people who wait a minute i know you guys these
00:44:43are ours how are you good how are you you guys are like taller yeah a little bit
00:44:54there's a saying and it goes like this a family that plays together stays together got two people
00:45:03here we can start laying out an eight foot wall please how about this one a family that works
00:45:09together can build a barn in a couple days doesn't rhyme but
00:45:15let's get lined up heading it we're in the groove now line it up with your wall kick it out good job
00:45:28send back a look at it this barn is gonna help with birds in the winter time it makes me sad seeing
00:45:35them all wet and cold in there so i'm excited for them to have a new warm house
00:45:40so ducks are incredibly adaptable birds while wild ducks typically migrate south for the winter
00:45:49domesticated ducks are uniquely equipped for colder weather with water shedding feathers covering a
00:45:55warming layer of down plumage however no domestic bird can survive prolonged weather exposure
00:46:03and without the ability to stay dry they risk hypothermia frostbite or even death
00:46:14is everybody happy so far yeah you see the the beginnings of what could be a cool building yeah
00:46:19okay so what i thought on day one is what i'm looking at right now we wanted to move to a place where we
00:46:28got sun and here we are back in the street so i'm going to start right now and let's see if we can get
00:46:33the sun to shine on you guys i'll just cut all the trees that you said to cut and apparently you've
00:46:39done the math and if you got sun here i'm happy
00:46:42nice and then now the ones he's cutting will be for later in the winter yeah yeah
00:47:02you know before the rainies first visited i was i wasn't in a good place i wasn't
00:47:08i wasn't okay from what happened after i lost my parents i wasn't i wasn't prepared to lead my family
00:47:22in a homestead lifestyle i knew what i wanted it just every setback was a mountain that i couldn't climb
00:47:32in this stretch jamie picked two spots and put his parents ashes in it
00:47:37so this stretch is super important to us he comes up here like on the anniversary do you mind if i
00:47:44ask how they passed away um uh it was a fire and then we found out that it was double suicide
00:47:54and the only thing that they left us like as a message was that they didn't have any hope
00:47:59we think it was the stress of two years of trying to get this place built just some sort of mental
00:48:08overload are you kidding me no i'm not at all jamie blames himself for not being here to help them
00:48:15and not knowing what was going on with them that that could happen
00:48:23if you knew what we've been through
00:48:25just to get here we need to get past this we you know that's why jamie needs to own this and do this
00:48:39that's why it's so important for us before the rainies came and rescued us it it felt like this
00:48:49was more jamie's parents place still and that jamie couldn't really fully own it like he didn't
00:48:54wasn't giving himself permission it's the craziest thing i've ever heard on any homestead
00:49:01it's not even bad luck it's like trauma oh my god if you were jamie and jody i couldn't even imagine
00:49:09what that feels like jamie has said that he inherited all of those pressures from his parents
00:49:17yeah because his parents are here his parents are here these homesteaders out of everyone we've met
00:49:24they might be the ones who need them us most
00:49:30listen it's really about are you ready to homestead can we fix the trauma do you
00:49:38believe in the dream i've seen 40 acre homestead that you own with trees that need to be thinned
00:49:46out that's true this is a proven stove that will hold the fire all night long besides just being a
00:49:51money saver the fact that it's um marty rainey approved makes a little more confidence in it
00:49:58marty gives fatherly wisdom that i haven't had you know he basically told me that this was my homestead
00:50:06and i mean sure on paper it was but just to hear somebody else say that like i really appreciated
00:50:14that more than i probably or i know i could have told him especially when he was here the first time
00:50:19cool thing about cutting firewood it heats you twice that's true once when you're cutting it
00:50:24oh i look forward to chopping wood i chopped wood as a kid
00:50:37you know i'm older and with that everything i do isn't for me anymore
00:50:44for my kids to be the third generation in the future to work this homestead
00:50:54that's what i'm doing this for i'm you know now i'm trying to get them a leg
00:50:59up so they can go further than i ever have or anybody has on this land especially
00:51:03you guys got sun yeah i think it looks pretty good
00:51:17good morning everyone um hey i'm so spent i'm so
00:51:24dizzied by what's happened the last few days i am so grateful to have been able to spend so much
00:51:30more time with marty and work with him i'm so thankful to our friends and family molly and scott
00:51:35that came out so much has been done but there's so much left to finish so i'm also incredibly nervous
00:51:42i haven't heard a whole lot about what we're doing in terms of water treatment our water is not great
00:51:49for a lot of things but i'm hoping that we've got a solution see where we're at and know what we're
00:51:56doing with that too so we went to a bona fide laboratory for a very thorough test of your water
00:52:07and as you can see here there's some good news right yeah arsenic barium cadmium looks fine right
00:52:16lead mercury that would be bad in your water but you can see it's satisfactory right and then we come to
00:52:22selenium a mineral and look at this down here this is actually a warning health risk exists the short
00:52:33version goes like this water in its purest form is soft but once it enters the water cycle it picks up
00:52:45minerals making it hard it's not safe to drink it's not safe to put on your plants
00:52:51and it's not safe to feed to your ducks and chickens
00:53:07health risk exists consider water treatment and or alternative water sources
00:53:14the side effects of this would be your animals maybe having losing issues stomach issues even humans
00:53:22but quite frankly
00:53:26wyoming is famous for many natural wonders like the red rocks of seminole the devil's tower and
00:53:33yellowstone national park but these surface level geological features are evidence of some of the most
00:53:40mineral rich and varied soil in the united states while consuming most minerals can be beneficial in
00:53:47moderation excessively high levels of some like iron calcium and selenium can wreak havoc on crops
00:53:55livestock and even humans leading to muscle spasms nausea respiratory malfunction and in extreme cases heart and
00:54:05kidney failure now we know what we're dealing with yeah
00:54:14i showed up here a few years ago thinking we were heroes we we got water out of a well that was drilled
00:54:2020 years ago last time i was here i thought you know it was a good day we drove away i drank the water
00:54:26it looked clear to me yeah but two years later we're seeing the ducks might even uh have symptoms yeah
00:54:33from the frankly contaminants or too high of certain minerals in the water and we can't use it in the
00:54:42house or for ourselves at all that's yours that's your water the question is what are we going to do
00:54:47about it we're going to have to in very limited time see if we can address that problem
00:54:52i don't like the well results and
00:55:06we we got to change that and i trust marty and this crew to help me figure out a solution
00:55:14otherwise nice one on the negative i think we can get it done
00:55:24it looks like you have the trimmers now we'll put the the sill plates and cripples for our
00:55:29two windows and this wall is close to being done i like it while marty works on a solution for the
00:55:36homestead's tainted water supply never have your hand over here construction must continue on the
00:55:43all-in-one barn have it away i'm looking at the scope of work on this homestead if we're going to get
00:55:50some of this other work done we might have to teach that next generation of homesteaders i.e
00:55:58their children notice how my hand's not right here yeah bam it's back here because i've nailed
00:56:04myself before and i remember it guess where i was i was on the arctic ocean in the oil fields middle of
00:56:12winter i walked up to a guy that was six foot seven a superintendent and i said hey i got a little
00:56:20problem yeah there was this much of a nail sticking out he thought i was joking but when he realized that
00:56:27i'd taken a nail that long bam shot it into that hand the six foot six man fainted
00:56:37you'll only do it once yeah are you gonna nail i wanted i like your style here we go
00:56:45this wall's looking good just today i learned with marty how to use a nail gun um that was really fun
00:56:53it's way bigger of a tool that i'm used to using at most i've used like the drill even yep you're good
00:57:01diesel was excited to use a nail gun that barn is really gonna when i think about it i mean it'll
00:57:07benefit me a lot but it's gonna benefit the kids the most good job very good job don't nail yourself
00:57:13one day this is probably gonna be our house that's all good
00:57:18so it's really helpful and exciting to learn all of these things that are going to be useful in the
00:57:25future down set one two three
00:57:32while the barn gives the black family new hope and motivation for the future of the homestead
00:57:37two years ago it was matt's protective shelter design that gave a much needed boost to jody's
00:57:46sister jessica here we go so we don't really have time to waste okay we're gonna build a hoop coop real
00:57:53fast okay set it down step on it and then go up in the middle just like this it's gonna be great help to
00:58:04have these on our property it's gonna get those ducks some protection
00:58:13all right push it up in the middle working with the rainies i'm feeling a lot better about what we can
00:58:20accomplish here on the homestead it gives me hope you know to keep going and chasing this crazy dream
00:58:30we've got here
00:58:35there's kind of the square outline of the building is that what we were thinking about it's looking good
00:58:42as the exterior of the barn takes shape marty tasks them with finalizing the interior layout
00:58:48let's talk dad what's the plan that's going to make it easier you got it we got to weigh in or
00:58:54agree with dad who probably does know best okay father what do we got all right so
00:59:01we got the stall for maybe a new cow look and that's going to be 10 foot from that corner yep um
00:59:07then we got the two runs for you guys for the chickens and ducks and here's your favorite part we're
00:59:12gonna make it wide enough that we can actually fit a wheelbarrow into where we're scooping instead
00:59:17of carrying scoopfuls of manure we'll put it in the wheelbarrow and take it out way easier
00:59:22chickens are in the front ducks are in the back right um these guys are messier
00:59:30and it's further to move the crap should they be in the front or not you make sense i like that i'm just
00:59:36thinking out loud because i've had dogs i appreciate it yeah marty building in a barn in such a way that
00:59:45is easy to expand upon and explaining to me and showing me how to expand means that he has confidence
00:59:52in me and that how do you not get motivated by that go inside there and see if it's big enough is
01:00:00the door big enough where the where where's the pins go we got to know marty definitely is
01:00:06giving us the ability to bring more life to this homestead um both in animals but also just the
01:00:12security of passing this on to the third generation and hopefully the fourth and fifth get it to the
01:00:18stud k bud you know we've made so many little buildings but i think when you see a barn on a
01:00:23homestead it's foundational and i think the kids even can sense that like oh we're this is it where
01:00:29this is we're really doing it i like this guys i like it
01:00:36the black family's wyoming homestead glenn let's go
01:00:45the family continues to frame out the walls for the bar but the troubling news of contaminated water
01:00:52hangs over the entire rescue i look at this beautiful 40 acres and it looks like it's a national
01:01:00park but it's one thing to build structures you can move a mountain of dirt but it really means
01:01:06nothing if there's not one drop of clean water when we got the water test back from the well we realized
01:01:15the fix would be to install between the well and the water tank at the house a reverse osmosis system
01:01:24marty's 21st century solution a water purification system between the well and the homestead's main
01:01:33system reverse osmosis is a process that uses a semi-permeable membrane that allows water molecules
01:01:40to travel through while blocking larger ionic compounds like salts and minerals this will leave
01:01:47the black valley with a tank of filtered water ready to use for the main house garden and time willing
01:01:55the all-in-one barn water comes in from the well makes its way into the ro system down into my sister
01:02:08now i've got to figure out how i'm going to get water 300 feet from the well
01:02:15and how are we going to power this up because we'd have to provide heat not so much for the
01:02:21chickens but for those ducks you kids want to be packing water uphill i will if i have to
01:02:28and that's a great answer by the way i'm impressed that said we put a tape measure on this it's almost
01:02:34300 feet from here all the way down to your water line and the question on the table is is it worth our
01:02:42while and about all we have left is a day and a half if that we don't have that much time so do you
01:02:48want a water line from the house to the barn yes or no yes yes huxley what do you think yeah who will
01:02:56be doing the bulk of the chores we'll share it yeah everybody yeah so hopefully if we do get a water line
01:03:03here it's going to make it easier on everybody isn't that the goal all right that said you understand we
01:03:09have a unfinished barn right and so clint's going to be on this till the end can so i'm losing my
01:03:17right hand man but i've got my right hand woman times two times three show clint exactly where you
01:03:25want it show us the trees that have to come out of the way and we have to get started right this second
01:03:30let's hit it come on come on come on animals need water so right now we're thinking about
01:03:39digging a water line from the water tank up to the new barn which is under construction that's going to
01:03:44require a trench deep six seven feet so the water line doesn't freeze it's got to come from the house
01:03:51all the way up to the barn i just try coming through here yeah if you can miss that big cedar and
01:03:56uh like log that's kind of supporting the road just right down by the house post to protect the
01:04:01water line from the northern wyoming elements clint will dig a 300 foot long six foot deep trench to
01:04:09access the geothermal warp beneath the local frost line while strategically avoiding the old growth trees
01:04:16that dot the hillside as well as underground root systems once done they will install an auxiliary water
01:04:24pump connecting the homestead's main water storage to the all-in-one barn on the hill
01:04:32i'm a little hesitant because the last time we dug a trench here we unearthed some bigger problems
01:04:50that's what's going on oh we found the hole
01:05:02you got one big hole there what am i looking at looks like i gave well i would say you get the sinkhole
01:05:10homestead could fall in that hole it might be an issue we don't know how far back it was okay well i'm
01:05:18going to call in there and scope it out you got to hook that on yep you got a flashlight i'm going
01:05:27to take it careful down there and i'm going to go in there is it you think it'll be okay it's sketchy
01:05:34well we got to find out clint we have to we have to work right there you don't want to go i'll go i like
01:05:39this guy okay we're going in ready do we have a shovel or a pick yeah want that shovel just in case
01:05:48marty gets buried you ready let's go down slowly real slow slow clint if i get buried just follow this
01:06:02yellow strap
01:06:07slow please
01:06:12stop
01:06:18looks like a big washout take me up please
01:06:21i've never seen anything like that before well it's a good thing it don't go farther down
01:06:33well i i wouldn't want to be living over that hole does that mean there's another one
01:06:39this whole country is littered with caves so who knows
01:06:43the extensive caves in the black hills remain a threat digging in the wrong spot could spell
01:06:54disaster for clint and the homestead
01:06:59it's scary to say i don't want a grand canyon left on my property after everybody
01:07:04has to pack up and leave it's so nerve-wracking
01:07:25just watching clint do what he does in the tight fit to run that line is so amazing to watch
01:07:34it's so amazing to see if you can see it's rocky and almost looks like there's some minerals right
01:07:48here this ditch was all dirt it was all clay it was all kind of red rock if you will schist mica
01:07:55maybe but look at this something over here so as i'm walking down the trench to make sure it's deep
01:08:01enough i look at the walls of the trench i see a white chalky thing bleeding out of the ground
01:08:07what is it selenium in harmony with the water test results i'm hoping
01:08:16that our filtration system ultimately will take care of that problem for this homestead
01:08:31last morning i'm a little wore out i'm a little tired still excited the fact that the kids worked
01:08:43yesterday they got to see how something like that gets built fast after everybody left and it quieted
01:08:49down my son asked me a million questions before bed on how what was what how did it work why did it
01:08:58work this has been amazing it's marty's last day on the black family homestead let's do this get two
01:09:07buys and the screw gun for the back i got it grab another one as he and the family charge forward
01:09:14installing rafters to support a reinforced metal roof designed to withstand extreme hail fall
01:09:21it's gonna have to go down disa you're gonna have to push it way down babe seeing the kids out there
01:09:29working with everybody was so cool i mean i i know what my children are capable of they may not know yet
01:09:38but it's good to see them be excited and look forward to this build and what it's going to do for our
01:09:44family and animals hi do you have a 21 and a half inch block in place for them to see all of that
01:09:50activity and the trees coming in and the logs coming in um something they've never experienced
01:09:55so it was super fun i guess let's just lay these three that's going to be two that's going to be eight
01:10:01feet we're going to be halfway there so let's go if it wasn't for the new barn we'd still be dealing
01:10:08with the survival what what was looking to be another winter of hard challenges to do right
01:10:13by your animals and your family because now there's a whole new opportunity to learn what
01:10:18we can be doing here in winter and how how a better space functions all right everybody happy or sad
01:10:25happy happy happy joy joy glint how's it going you're amazing i love it i mean look at this
01:10:38frost is like five or six you've got a seven and eight foot deep trench good job time to drop in the
01:10:44wire not only did we go the extra mile get water to this barn but we're also taking power so we'll
01:10:52probably have a 30 amp breaker at the house we've got some 10 amp wire we're running at 250 feet these
01:10:59guys are going to have water they're going to have power they could heat this building this is probably the
01:11:04most significant building on this homestead a couple years ago i met the black family they had
01:11:11no water but they had a well the mission get the water from that well to a tank near their house two
01:11:19years later here we are building another structure a long ways from the house digging a trench and trying
01:11:25to get that same water all the way up to a new barn it's like deja vu all over it okay you guys over
01:11:37here family over here please quick bring that hose this homestead is the one where the water issue
01:11:47has been going on for a long time we relate to people that have water problems trust me so is the
01:11:55well hopeless
01:12:00hear anything
01:12:00i hear something it's coming watch out
01:12:12so that water is coming from your well that's from our well yeah that's our well and
01:12:22shut up are you being serious i don't even know what's happening this is our well don't waste it come
01:12:27here get over here quick dad get over here i'll try it don't waste it all right that's that 900 foot well
01:12:43i don't know what i'm feeling like this is uh i don't think i've ever felt something like this before
01:12:48honestly like i can't i can't even put it into words we don't have to worry about this anymore we can do
01:12:56so much more that we haven't been able to do because this has been a fight always almost 20
01:13:02years i didn't think i'd ever see water come out there we get to benefit from it finally and not just
01:13:08be tortured by it we're free yeah you know that's crazy what would your mom and dad say if they were
01:13:17standing right here right now and saw this i think they'd be just as speechless i think they'd have a hard
01:13:21time thanking you just like i am i wish they could have stayed here to see this
01:13:28tomorrow is a brand new day and a super bright future for this beautiful family as of tonight you
01:13:36have water yes for the first time ever dad wait i didn't know spider spider
01:13:43i got a question for you did you ever think you'd have a barn on this 40 acre homestead i was kind
01:14:03of giving up on the hope did you ever think you'd have potential water going to that definitely not
01:14:08now did you ever think you'd have potential power not anytime soon that's for sure if we uh
01:14:15stay busy keep working it's possible that we can throw a light switch on in this place
01:14:19before we leave okay make sure there's enough wire that'll reach that panel okay thank you very much
01:14:24looking good
01:14:33so we're gonna play one hand of blackjack now there's no way we're gonna play blackjack a stone's
01:14:39throw from deadwood unless everyone looks the part so here's a hat for you if you're inclined
01:14:45first i'm gonna show you uh trick huxley pick a card any card any card good one okay show it to
01:14:52the fam i'll be over here are you done put that card on top the deck okay now watch that card really
01:15:00close now your card went through the deck through the table it's in my hand right now but we're not done
01:15:13because now the cards back up through the deck and family is that your card yeah
01:15:26that was amazing
01:15:27get some screws in that it's gonna be holding stuff up in the black hills of wyoming come on in
01:15:42the water's fine marty and the family race the sun to finish the all-in-one barn designed to protect the
01:15:49homestead's livestock through increasingly deadly winters trying to build a barn in four days isn't
01:15:57for everybody the window of opportunity to finish this before winter is closing
01:16:06i'll take the nail gun please so we have dug the trench we threw in a water line we also
01:16:12threw in an electrical line backfilled it and there's power and water from the house to the barn
01:16:19but it's getting dark and the barn's not finished i'm gonna try to squeeze a little bit more out of
01:16:26this homesteading family and if i can we will take this homestead out of the red with the help of the
01:16:35blocks you know the short duration of this visit from marty is a little concerning but at the same
01:16:45time one in the bottom family bring a door over that excitement and the desire is there we're willing to
01:16:53work you got a screw on you i got screws on me where's the other window
01:17:05it's money uh i gotta do we have to do one more thing with a ladder right over the door you guys i got
01:17:14to come in
01:17:25come on up i like your style
01:17:33here's your marker you guys just go all the way across it thanks done
01:17:39here i come
01:17:47how's the doors fit good nice that feels good okay come on guys now is this the wide entry you
01:18:11want it oh yes okay what's going to happen over here someday over here is our new dairy stall for
01:18:20a new cow we got to talk about a couple things how deep does the snow get here depends three four
01:18:27feet okay look up do you think that that roof will hold the snow yeah we've left you a lot of lumber
01:18:35and there's room left on those posts on both sides to add more okay two by tens if you think you need them i also think that the metal roof will shed so we have that going on all right kids what's going on with the nesting boxes you tell me is it easier now definitely is it cleaner yeah there's a water line to this building there's a 30 amp wire and breaker box on this building
01:19:03all the power you'd ever need in a barn is in this building so yeah you're kind of you're at the cool
01:19:11part i will tell you this right now but after watching this family work as hard as they did on
01:19:17their own barn smiling and fun and together uh i don't feel bad at all we got this for sure
01:19:25and i believe that and thank you let's look at it from the outside one more time before it gets too
01:19:30dark to see it i'm so super proud of everything everybody's learned our ability to be flexible
01:19:36and adaptable at this point uh we've really proven it to see a barn go up that quickly is not anything
01:19:43i've ever experienced i'm pretty amazed i'm pretty stunned it's so transformed our land our structures and
01:19:51what we're going to be able to do look at that building that's amazing look at that i'm serious
01:19:57that's a good building to be able to have this boost on the homestead just pushes me further towards
01:20:05success you know i was worried going into winter that we were going to have some setbacks maybe some
01:20:10losses but now with how much room we have i can add more livestock and the way marty built the barn
01:20:18i can expand as needed four days ago the black family had lost all hope without the skills or
01:20:28resources to adapt to an increasingly volatile climate the contaminated water supply decimated
01:20:36their garden and the deadly weather and lack of sufficient shelter picked off their only source of
01:20:42protein now the water well is safely filtered and potable which will allow the family to resume their
01:20:52gardening and with the all-in-one passive and solar heated barn built for expanding livestock the black
01:21:00family is primed for a successful future but even as the sun sets on his final day look at this right
01:21:12here i got a present for you marty has one last surprise for the black family
01:21:18we went the extra mile and gave it that little special twist and provided a huge catchment tank
01:21:32alongside the barn let's wrestle this thing into the position you want listen no legitimate homesteader is
01:21:40ever gonna say no to water thank you looks good it does in the dark you know what i'm really happy
01:21:58about guys i didn't see you working as a family like this the last night i didn't see that they're helping
01:22:04themselves advance this whole dream and i'm like this is legit you guys did a lot that's not something
01:22:12you see every day so as parents they're doing something right i think it's a big deal for marty
01:22:17to tell tell you that he likes your work ethic not just your work ethic but when the kids come out
01:22:23you know he's like okay they get it that's incredibly reassuring does this help you big time
01:22:30help isn't the word for it i mean it changes everything and that's the thing i don't think
01:22:37we realize a barn is such a big endeavor we weren't thinking about that not just a barn but a barn with
01:22:44power and water running up to it the opportunities to do things we haven't done before help is not the word
01:22:52i'm not much of a gambler i've never gambled in my life or have i for the last four days
01:23:04i saw a sure bet this is a blast thank you all thank you marty and i did go all in on jamie
