00:00I know a lot of people like to romanticize this type of life but at the end of the day it's a
00:07constant battle. No one's here to save you. It's either you do it or you deal with consequences.
00:16This is the ice shack. The true off-grid fridge. It needs a lot of work.
00:24Working in the cold is always a big challenge.
00:29Chancels don't start.
00:34It can be frustrating but just put your head down and power through it.
00:38I've never seen a winter like this before. Too much snow. Too much snow.
00:43If you don't have it and you need it, it makes something out of nothing.
00:48Do you think it's wide enough to go across with a heavy pack?
00:51Oh my god. This is a feeling I wish everyone could experience.
00:59Oh my god.
01:02Oh my god.
01:04Oh my god.
01:06Oh my god.
01:07Oh my god.
01:08Oh my god.
01:09Oh my god.
01:11Oh my god.
01:12Oh my god.
01:14Oh my god.
01:22As soon as it gets cold, firewood is the only way to stay warm.
01:26Otherwise, it just frees to death.
01:30This is pretty much the last of my dry, cured firewood.
01:34There's nothing decent on this whole island worth cutting.
01:36Nothing's going to give any heat.
01:39It really would be great if you could just cut down any tree at all and burn it.
01:43But it's not like that.
01:45There's lots of trees around, but to find nice, dry wood, it's a whole other ballgame.
01:50And right now, I'm definitely running low.
01:52Pretty much as soon as the winter set in here, I moved down to the kitchen to the main floor.
02:14Traditionally in these old saltbox houses, this was the only room that was warm during the winter.
02:19There's no insulation in these old houses.
02:22Heat in this house is like trying to heat a lobster pot.
02:23The heat just goes right at the top.
02:26That's why there's two wood stoves here to keep it warm.
02:29That's why I got a day bed down here now.
02:32But, you know, it's not going to stay very warm much longer.
02:35It's still running out of firewood.
02:36But I do know there is some across the harbor.
02:39I've seen some dry stuff over there up on a cliff.
02:42The problem is getting to it.
02:43I don't want to bring the speedboat over there, get her up on the rocks, beat her up.
02:48My only option now is to use the old dory.
02:51Bring her over there on the cliffs and see if I can pinch a little quick load of dry wood.
02:56The dory is great for multiple reasons.
03:00I can get in some tight spots that I wouldn't be able to get with the big powerboat.
03:05But when we tried to christen her, smash that beer across her bow, she wouldn't take it.
03:08F*** that's bad luck.
03:12Everyone knows if you can't christen a boat, it's got to be bad luck.
03:16I don't know if she's actually cursed or not, but I've got to get the firewood.
03:19And this dory is just the best way to do that.
03:23She's about to get her first dip.
03:26Yeah, I'm not really sure how good an idea this is.
03:29Pretty rough out there.
03:31Come on, Ryan.
03:32Up here.
03:35Oh, come on, my boy.
03:38Slippery.
03:38You stay there.
03:40Here we go, Ryan.
03:42First dip.
03:46Stay still, Ryan.
03:53She's got a tip to her.
03:55She's got a tip to her.
03:58Stay still, Ryan.
04:01Ronnie?
04:02Ronnie's going to tip me over.
04:06Up.
04:07Up.
04:08Up.
04:08Oh, my God.
04:11I thought we were going to tip over there.
04:13She's so light on her own that she's basically sitting on top of the water.
04:16She's not sitting in the water.
04:18So we need to load her up some rocks as well.
04:21So pull her down.
04:21Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
04:29Sorry, my son.
04:31She'll tip you with your chin there.
04:33You stay here.
04:34It won't be long.
04:35It won't be long.
04:36It won't be long.
04:36It won't be long.
04:36We stay.
04:37All right, let's try this again.
04:40All right, Ryan's a lot better.
04:45I never like leaving Ronnie behind.
04:48He's usually beside me everywhere I go, but it's not sensible to try and bring him in this
04:53small boat and fill it with firewood.
04:55Way better.
04:59Got a bit of ballast in her.
05:00She's sitting low.
05:01Oh, yeah.
05:03This will do.
05:06Look how fast she is.
05:07Woo!
05:09Next off firewood, baby.
05:11I know this land, and I've been here many winters, and I had never seen a winter like
05:30this before.
05:32You know, the last few years, there was about three feet of snow.
05:35But this year, man, it's been crazy, it's like four feet snow at least.
05:43It's amazing, but more work, though, for me.
05:53My next project will be to build a big, huge forge, you know, a big blacksmith shop.
06:01I'm looking forward, you know, to work with metal.
06:04Oh, this is a new skill that I really want to try and to pursue, so I can make anything
06:11I want.
06:13So now I'm shoveling a big space here in order to build this forge, and I want it big.
06:22You know, it's always easier to build anything on spring, summer.
06:27But wintertime, you know, at the log cabin, I've got a lot of time, so I'm going to use
06:33this time to build my forge.
06:39It's about five feet here.
06:41You could build a home in there.
06:43It's just crazy.
06:45All right.
06:50This looks pretty good to me.
06:54Ready to build a wall now.
06:58This middle shop will open so many new possibilities for me.
07:03A whole new level of self-reliance.
07:05If I want something, I have to make it myself.
07:15Well, this is all the wood I have had on my land.
07:18I need some more boards.
07:22I've got some old logs with no bark on it, so maybe I'm going to use it.
07:27These kind of logs, you know, it's back-up logs.
07:34We never know when we're going to need it, so I'm glad I have it.
07:38Okay.
07:40me?
07:41Oh, .
07:42I had a bad feeling, you know?
07:48It's a bad feeling.
07:51Close to a foot short.
07:53I just miscalculated.
07:54Oh, I'm disappointed.
07:57I'll see what I've got.
08:02What do I have now?
08:04This one looks good.
08:09This one better work.
08:11Okay.
08:14Perfect.
08:15Yeah.
08:17It looks pretty good.
08:18Oof, that was close.
08:24That was the last one.
08:31Uh, hmm.
08:34F**k.
08:37Whoa.
08:39It's only four walls.
08:42But it's like a puzzle, you know?
08:45This goes here.
08:50You come here.
08:52Uh-huh.
08:56Okay.
08:57Trying to figure it out.
09:03You come here, big guy, because you have an angle for the room.
09:08Okay?
09:10All done.
09:11All done.
09:11Ah, it's been a long day.
09:19Ha, ha, ha, ha.
09:32Polly Lake is a very remote location.
09:35This is it.
09:36It's a place that means a lot to Gilbert.
09:40I grabbed the shovels.
09:43That's where his family's from.
09:44That's where he was raised.
09:47This is really home for Gilbert.
09:53Wow.
09:56He needs a lot of work.
09:57Yep.
09:58Just have to take the snow off and see what we can do.
10:00This is an ice shack.
10:04This is a true off-grid fridge.
10:08Once the whole thing is piled with ice, it lasts the whole summer.
10:12We spend our summers here, and having an ice shack is going to help us preserve our food.
10:20Preserve our fish, our caribou, so that we can keep it cold.
10:25Parky, come here.
10:27When you're somewhere remote, you've got to try to work with the elements and not rely on gas and electricity,
10:33because, you know, you don't have it available.
10:39A lot of snow.
10:41The ice shack hasn't really been used in a couple years.
10:45It's been in a pretty rough shape.
10:48It's not a stable structure at all.
10:50It's all collapsed in the center.
10:53I really want to fix this up so we can start storing some ice in here,
10:57but it's not really holding by much.
11:00The biggest challenge right now is that we don't have the supplies really to fix it.
11:05We only have what's here, and there's not much, so we'll use what we have.
11:13We do have an old cabin that's been sitting there for years.
11:18We're going to try to salvage the wood,
11:20and if it's not usable, then at least we can burn it and keep ourselves warm.
11:30There we go.
11:35Oh, yeah.
11:38Do you think the sweat is so good?
11:40Yeah.
11:43Big nails.
11:45Yeah, those are massive nails.
11:48Living off-grid forces you to be resourceful and be creative.
11:54All right, this is really heavy.
11:55If you don't have it and you need it,
11:58you just have to make something out of nothing.
12:02All right, let's go.
12:15This lifestyle is sure not for everyone.
12:17I'm doing it because I love the challenge.
12:21I like to test myself.
12:24For me, that's living life to the fullest.
12:30I'm back to the place where I started to build that bridge last year,
12:35where nothing worked out.
12:36Last spring, I had the great idea to try to build a bridge during the spring flood.
12:47It was just not possible.
12:49The water was getting so high so fast.
12:52It was a pretty big disaster.
12:54So I'm still wanting to finish that bridge project
13:02because there's some good moose country on the other side of the creek.
13:08I'm hoping I can go hunting there next fall.
13:11So if I can have a bridge, I'm able to cross back and forth.
13:15Especially if you go hunting and you have a big, heavy backpack,
13:18it can be easier to cross.
13:20That's why I want to try again,
13:23but using the winter to be able to walk on the ice,
13:27it's going to be easier to build the bridge.
13:32Alex is back.
13:33It's always nice to have another human around
13:36and have someone to talk to
13:37and more company than just the dogs.
13:41Another set of hands to help me with big projects like this one.
13:45I missed him.
13:47Good to be back.
13:48I missed out here on the trapline and to see more go.
13:52I hope that working together, we can get this done.
13:56We just have to be a little bit careful here working on the ice.
14:01There's still water running underneath here.
14:03You can hear it gurgling.
14:05Getting wet out here in the winter is always a danger.
14:10You can catch hypothermia quickly.
14:12Right now, I'm checking the ice to see if the spot is safe to build the bridge.
14:23The ice looks pretty thick,
14:25so I think we're safe and we can actually start building.
14:28That's the tree, what are you thinking?
14:33I think that's the best one.
14:35Let's do it.
14:40My biggest worries are that the tree is not going to be long enough
14:44or not thick enough when it falls on the other side.
14:47And also that the whole thing slides down the river
14:51and that we're not able to pull it back up.
14:54I'm a guy.
14:58We're putting a couple logs under the tree.
15:00Just when we're going to cut it,
15:03we don't want it to slide down on the river.
15:06So hopefully those little logs just hold it in place here
15:09so we can have it stay on that bank.
15:12Okay.
15:17Every time we use chainsaw,
15:19you always have to think about safety, of course,
15:22but even more in the winter.
15:24Just recap.
15:25It's going to come down quick.
15:27There's lots of snow and it's harder to move fast
15:30if the tree doesn't fall where you want it.
15:32It's going!
15:35Get out!
15:38Yahoo!
15:41It stayed on the bank on this side.
15:44Yeah, it held on here good.
15:46I think it still reaches on the beach.
15:50It should be kind of perfect.
15:58So we're going to build a pillar,
16:00like a little tower to put the bridge on.
16:03So the bridge will be hopefully higher than the water level.
16:06These are maybe 70 to 100 pounds,
16:12the heavier ones here.
16:14They'll make salt foundation for our pillar over there.
16:18It's okay.
16:19Moving logs, it's heavy enough,
16:22but moving logs through this deep snow,
16:24it's pretty demanding.
16:25That's the biggest part,
16:29building something in the winter
16:31is dealing with that snow.
16:34Even though it's hard work,
16:36I've got something to prove.
16:38I don't want to fail again.
16:42I really want this bridge to work,
16:44but I also want to beat that damn river.
16:47Well, the frame is done.
17:04Now I'm ready for the forge itself.
17:06It's an antique forge that I got.
17:08Right now, it's pretty far from the cabine,
17:12so I've got to get it.
17:14But this thing, well, it's so heavy.
17:17It's like at least 200 pounds, something like that.
17:20And I cannot carry it by myself.
17:22Not even on my back.
17:23It's just impossible.
17:24There is so much snow,
17:26and I don't have a sleigh.
17:28So I've got to find a way to do it.
17:36Oh, yeah.
17:38That's pretty big.
17:45I just saw my canoe,
17:47and I said, yeah, let's use a canoe.
17:50Pretty sure I can just put the forge on the top,
17:53pull it.
17:56We don't say that every day,
17:58putting a forge in a canoe.
18:02This part is very, very fragile.
18:04Oh, man, this is heavy.
18:17Come on, big guy.
18:19Oh, wait.
18:20Oh, wait.
18:20Oh, wait.
18:20Oh, wait.
18:21Oh, wait.
18:21Oh, wait.
18:21Oh, wait.
18:21Oh, wait.
18:22Oh, the plywood is just bending so much.
18:25I broke it.
18:28Yeah, I broke it.
18:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:35It's getting worse and worse, man.
18:37I need some straps,
18:39because right now,
18:41the canoe will just open up.
18:42Being on my land is never boring.
18:54Every day is different.
18:56There's always challenge.
19:00And I love challenge.
19:02This is part of the game, you know?
19:05It's part of the game.
19:06Okay, that's good.
19:10Let's see if it works.
19:21Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
19:24Back, back, back.
19:27Maybe it's better if I go on the back, man.
19:29If I'm down there.
19:30Pull and push.
19:41I'm not even halfway yet.
20:06It's so heavy, it's like too much snow.
20:11So, oh, this is what I'm going to do, it's going to go faster.
20:17I'm just going to get my tools and rope.
20:23You know, there is a kind of self-reliance that lifestyle demands.
20:30You always have to find new ideas.
20:33Okay.
20:35You have to figure it out.
20:37It's the only option.
20:41Yeah, it's working good.
20:50Oh, man, that wasn't a danger.
20:58It's here, and I found another use for my canoe.
21:03I feel like I'm running to something more than I'm running from something.
21:25I can see what I want out here.
21:28For me, it's all about chasing freedom.
21:30Oh, my God.
21:37This is a feeling I wish everyone could experience.
21:41He will enjoy his whole other world.
21:47Happy boy.
21:48I'm a happy boy.
21:49I'm going to try and find some firewood.
21:55I see loads of firewood right up there.
21:57Lots of good stuff.
21:59But it's not a good place for landing.
22:03Yeah, if I try and land here,
22:05you wouldn't be alone getting yourself tore up in these rocks.
22:09These rocks and this ice take the bottom right of the boat.
22:12I'm going to find somewhere else.
22:16Got no choice.
22:28Well, the old roadboat might be cursed, but I tell you, boy,
22:31so far, so good.
22:33We're here.
22:35That's where all the good wood is.
22:37I can see lots of it up there.
22:39My God, this is sheer.
22:42Need to get a billy goat in here
22:43and scrub a chainsaw to him.
22:45Got to hurry up and do this
22:46because tide's on the way in.
22:48Before long, this whole beach will be underwater.
22:51Want to get the wood, I got to get it now.
22:56This cliff right here is exactly why Newfoundland
22:58is nicknamed the rock
22:59because all it is is massive rock
23:01sitting out in the Atlantic Ocean.
23:04Oh.
23:06My God.
23:06This is it.
23:09I know a lot of these trees don't look like much
23:11to the untrained eye.
23:13These little things here,
23:14these are called stun wood around here.
23:15It's not 100% dry
23:16and 100% green.
23:18If you can get them burning, they burn hot.
23:21And around here,
23:21this is really the best you're going to do
23:22is this stuff.
23:24That one little tree right there,
23:26a few hours of burning just in that one.
23:28Nice part is,
23:29the dory is just right there.
23:30So I can just cut all this down
23:32and then just throw it right over the cliff,
23:34right into the dory.
23:35Well,
23:37only one thing left to do now, boy.
23:39Let the big dog eat.
23:40When you're out in the bush,
24:00you really got to think a couple steps ahead.
24:03It just makes you more prepared.
24:05It's always something that you need to keep
24:10in the back of your mind.
24:13And building an ice cabin
24:14is definitely thinking a couple steps ahead.
24:22Right now, the roof,
24:24it's looking like this in the center.
24:26So we want to try to push something underneath
24:29to bring it straight.
24:32That looks really good, Gilbert.
24:34That looks really solid.
24:38There's going to be the leverage.
24:40Okay.
24:41Yeah, yeah, that'll work really good.
24:43Yeah.
24:46Well, hopefully that'll hold
24:47when we push it up.
24:48All right, you ready?
24:52One, two, three.
24:59It's moving up.
25:01Yeah, it's one up.
25:04Okay, so you want me to step on it?
25:06Yeah.
25:10All right.
25:11What do you want me to do?
25:12Just keep stepping up.
25:13I'm going to put a chamois under it.
25:15Oh, yeah.
25:27Got it.
25:27Working.
25:28Working.
25:33I'm going to put another shin in here.
25:36I think this little contraption thing
25:39that we've got going on here
25:40is working so far.
25:42We're definitely able to bring it up
25:44a little bit more every time.
25:48I think we're just going to have
25:49to keep going inch by inch.
25:51Oh, yeah.
25:52It's on there.
25:53Yeah.
25:54Oh, yeah.
25:54Good.
25:55It's supporting.
25:56We got to raise maybe a foot.
25:59We're bracing it now.
26:03That should be good enough.
26:06We're going to start harvesting
26:08some ice blocks,
26:09and then we're going to start
26:09stacking up the ice shack.
26:14Last spring, I went exploring
26:28on the other side of the river,
26:30and I found really good moose country.
26:32But rivers can be dangerous,
26:37especially in the spring
26:38when the water can be pretty strong.
26:40F*** me.
26:41People can get swept away pretty easily.
26:47This bridge means a lot
26:49because I will have easy access
26:51to those hunting grounds,
26:52and hopefully it means more access to food.
27:00We want to build the pillar
27:02as high as the bank on the other side
27:03so it's higher above the water level
27:07when the water is higher in the spring.
27:08It looks pretty sturdy.
27:19I think it's going to be strong enough
27:20to hold if there's a big flood
27:22during the spring.
27:24And now comes the biggest challenge,
27:27which is putting that tree
27:29on top of the pillar.
27:31It's a very heavy tree.
27:33It's hundreds of pounds.
27:35So we'll have to find a little system
27:38to bring it up.
27:40We want to make sure
27:40we don't pull that whole tree
27:42down the river
27:42while we're jacking it up.
27:45That thing falls into the river
27:47on the other side.
27:48It would be game over for us.
27:51So Alex is securing
27:52the other end right now
27:53to make sure it stays in place.
27:56Hopefully it works.
28:05Ready?
28:06One, two, three.
28:08Okay.
28:08One, two, three.
28:12One, two, three.
28:14Okay.
28:15One, two, three.
28:17Wait.
28:20Oh, I'll step on it.
28:22I didn't.
28:23Okay.
28:24Okay.
28:25One, two, three.
28:26A little more.
28:29One, two, three.
28:32No.
28:32Can you hold or I will?
28:37No, can you hold?
28:38Can you?
28:39Can you hold?
28:40I'm going to try
28:41wrapping this thing
28:42right around me.
28:44Okay.
28:45One, two, three.
28:47One, two, three.
28:49This is really hanging up.
28:51Should I just cut this?
28:53Yep.
29:00No, you.
29:01Just cut it flat.
29:16Okay.
29:17You got to walk.
29:19Okay.
29:20One, two, three.
29:25We're on.
29:27Okay.
29:27Okay.
29:27In place.
29:32It's in there?
29:32Yeah.
29:33That's perfect.
29:33Okay.
29:34Good job.
29:37Having the tree up there now
29:38is a big part is done.
29:40I think it's high enough
29:43for the water in the spring.
29:46I think it's going to be safe.
29:48But it's far from being done.
29:52We milled some boards
29:53back at camp
29:54for the bridge.
29:56But it would be much easier
29:57if I can put all the planks
29:58in the sled pulled
29:59by the dogs.
30:01What I'm most worried about
30:02will be probably
30:03that big steep hill.
30:04It's pretty vertical
30:08and it's going to be
30:09a little intense,
30:10I think.
30:10The fort is here.
30:21The anvil will be around here.
30:23So it's like
30:24I'll be working here.
30:26Make sure it's warm enough
30:28and bring it here
30:29and talk, talk, talk, talk, talk.
30:30Working on the anvil
30:31and back.
30:33I see it now.
30:34Yeah.
30:34Yeah.
30:35Yeah.
30:35Yeah.
30:35Yeah.
30:36Yeah.
30:36Yeah.
30:36Yeah.
30:37Yeah.
30:37Yeah.
30:37Yeah.
30:37Yeah.
30:38Yeah.
30:38Yeah.
30:38Yeah.
30:38Yeah.
30:39Yeah.
30:41This is the original fan
30:42from the forge.
30:44You know,
30:45that was a hand crank here.
30:47But the last owner
30:48put an electric motor
30:50to it.
30:52So now there is
30:53only one way to know
30:54if it works
30:55to plug it in.
30:58It has to work,
30:59this guy, you know,
31:00after all that work,
31:02it needs to work.
31:06The power is coming
31:07from the solar panel system.
31:09So this is the moment of truth.
31:12Ha ha ha ha ha.
31:14Ha ha ha ha.
31:15Okay.
31:15Oh!
31:16Ah!
31:16Ah!
31:16Ah!
31:17Ah!
31:17Ah!
31:18Ah!
31:18Ah!
31:19Ah!
31:20Ah!
31:20Ah!
31:21Ah!
31:22Ah!
31:23Ah!
31:24Ah!
31:25Ah!
31:26Ah!
31:28It looks crooked a bit.
31:30It's not in line.
31:31Ah!
31:32Ah!
31:33The leg is crooked here.
31:37Ah!
31:37How come
31:38it's not working?
31:38Maybe
31:39B needs to be a little bit, okay, one, two, okay, and this is two, here we go, okay.
31:52Oh, it's more aligned, let's do it again, second try.
32:09Yeah, yeah, that's great, man, I feel the air, that's just enough force to feed a fire to
32:25make it work, hey man, now I just need to start a fire on it.
32:38This is old school, I like to bring back some tradition, and this is very old tradition
32:44here.
32:45I'm just looking for embers now, there are some coals here, let's start the fan.
32:59Oh man, that's working a lot, oh yeah.
33:05This is exactly what I want to see, the coals are so red now, that's crazy.
33:13It's working, and it's going to be very hot.
33:16I can't wait to put some metal into it.
33:22I feel great, this is just a big step for me.
33:26This is the forge I've always wanted.
33:29I can work middle now, I can build anything here.
33:32A new world is opening to me.
33:39It's still nice, and I'm a little concerned.
33:53It might not be thick enough for ice blocks, but hopefully it is, and we can continue harvesting
34:00ice.
34:01Where do you want it?
34:08Right here.
34:09Right here.
34:10That's a really nice piece.
34:11Yeah, this is a really good spot.
34:16Yeah, that's what we're looking for.
34:37How much do you think these blocks weigh, like 40 pounds?
34:45Yeah.
34:46Yeah.
34:47All right, last one for now.
34:52Good.
34:55This is the first ice harvesting of the season, so it's okay if we don't get a lot of ice blocks.
35:02They're slippery.
35:03They're so slippery.
35:04But at least we're getting it started, and then throughout the season we'll continue to
35:08add more ice to the ice cabin.
35:10Now we know where to get the ice.
35:13Okay.
35:14All right.
35:15Having an ice cabin is going to be really important for us in the summertime when we're
35:35cooking.
35:36That works pretty good.
35:37Because filling it up with ice is going to last all the way through probably September.
35:42Oh my God.
35:43And then we'll be able to store some food in the summertime.
35:46Yeah.
35:47Yeah.
35:48Yeah.
35:49Yeah.
35:50That works.
35:51Stack them up really nice.
35:52Yeah.
35:53That's the last one?
35:54The last one.
35:55Yeah.
35:56Yeah.
35:57This will act as insulation, right?
35:58Yeah, it's insulation.
35:59Everything that we've used on this ice cabin is from repurposed material.
36:13Amazing how much we can get done with scrap and stuff we find.
36:20Good for now.
36:22Yeah.
36:23Looks awesome.
36:24There you go.
36:25When we come back with more supplies then we can really fix it up.
36:31Maybe eventually we could put a newer roof on.
36:33Yeah.
36:34It's not super pretty to look at but it looks like it's going to do the job for now.
36:39We did it.
36:40All right.
36:41Let's go get some coffee.
36:42Coffee time.
36:55Hey, come here.
36:58I'm excited to get this done.
37:01Good boy.
37:02Oh, you're so happy to go.
37:04We milled some boards back at camp for the bridge.
37:08But it's going to take forever if we have to walk back and forth with the planks.
37:13Line up.
37:14Line up.
37:15So if we can get it done in one shot with the dogs then it will save us a lot of time.
37:23Everybody behave today, please.
37:26Coming down to the river, it's a very steep hill.
37:35And if the dogs panic, they might just stop right away.
37:40Easy.
37:41I'm worried I'm going to hit them if I'm too fast.
37:44Easy.
37:45It's going to be intense.
37:47Watch out.
37:48They're coming hot.
37:49Yeah, boys.
37:50Woo.
37:51We made it.
37:52Holy .
37:53You okay?
37:54That was fast.
37:55Come on, boys.
37:56The dogs did good.
37:57Good job, boys.
37:58They didn't stop and I didn't smack into them.
38:00Come on, boys.
38:01Go, boys.
38:02Good boys.
38:03It's a good adrenaline shot and it was fun.
38:19Good boys.
38:21Good boy, Icar.
38:25Well, now we've got the boards here.
38:26the boards here, saved us a lot of carrying. Hope that'll be enough.
38:40We're flat on the top here so it's a little more stable for the board to go on.
38:47We're using the logs so it's a little wider to walk on, especially if we have big backpacks if
38:53we go hunting. You get to put the last board in.
39:08I think it's pretty good for a bush bridge. You gonna go try it out? Yep.
39:12You think it's wide enough to go across with a heavy pack?
39:24Kind of bouncy but it's wide enough.
39:30A little bush engineering and made it work.
39:33It was a pretty hard job but it's done. It's not a fancy bridge but it beats swimming through that
39:41raging river anyways.
39:55I know a lot of people like to romanticize this type of life but at the end of the day it's hard work.
40:00It's a constant battle. No one's here to save you. It's either you do it or you deal with consequences.
40:14That's the worst of it. You definitely got a good boatload of wood there.
40:18All I got to do is load her up, back to the kitchen, drink cup of tea in no time.
40:21Oh lord, that is some view. Look at this. It's amazing this is my backyard. It's absolutely amazing.
40:33It's hard work. It's a hard country out here.
40:37When I look out over views like this, it really makes it worth it.
40:41Same rocks, the same cliffs they were looking at a thousand years ago.
40:44It's very humbling.
40:56Good load of wood that's for sure.
41:02The boat's not that big so I want to cut this wood to fit kind of perfectly into the boat
41:06so I can get as much as I can home in one load.
41:18Old timers say firewood heats you up three times.
41:21Once cutting it, once getting it to the wood stove and once when she goes into the wood stove.
41:26This is number two for me.
41:27Loading up on a rising tide like this, you're constantly trying to keep the boat
41:36drying out. Look, I'm leaving you.
41:42It's nothing like anything worse than standing on the beach and watching your boat drift away.
41:48You know that the only option to get that boat back would be to strip down and pray that you can swim
41:53fast, especially out here in the wintertime. That's it, she's maxed.
42:02Well, now all I gotta do is get her home.
42:09She definitely feels heavier than when she had rocks, that's for sure.
42:14Come on, old girl. You might be cursed, but you ain't gonna sink today.
42:19Not on my watch.
42:23The old cursed boat did pretty good. That was her first real job. She did great.
42:33And we got a nice load of wood out of it. Now let's get all this up to the wood stove and
42:38sit back and enjoy it. Not gonna freeze to death tonight.
42:42Coming in with a nice iron load of dry wood for a fire and have a Ronnie there waiting for me.
42:51Nice little warm house up on the hill.
42:55Philly King, coming home to my castle.
42:57Philly King, coming home to my castle.
43:12We'll be right back to my castle.
43:14Thanks for joining us.
43:14Thanks.
