00:00:00A winter weather alert is in effect for North Arkansas, bringing extreme
00:00:05temperatures and whiteout conditions. Officials are urging residents to remain
00:00:09indoors and avoid driving due to snow accumulation and ice. Please stay off the
00:00:14roads.
00:00:15Let's get out of here!
00:00:17Everybody is just kind of scattering. Full-blown state of emergency. It's really
00:00:23starting to come down. We gotta go. It's like no time to waste.
00:00:28Hurry up! We don't want to get stranded on this homestead.
00:00:32Here we go.
00:00:35When it comes to the basics of homesteads, these people are striking out.
00:00:42You don't have water to even water a plant.
00:00:44No.
00:00:45I can feel water falling from the sky right now. You're drowning in water, but dying of thirst.
00:00:51Our dream is to have our multi-generational homesteads.
00:00:55I want to have our own produce and be able to live off the land, you know?
00:00:58These boys are invested.
00:00:59They are putting work in.
00:01:01We built the cabin in a short amount of time.
00:01:04If this house was in town, they would condemn it.
00:01:07We are not too proud to say we don't know everything. We want to learn and we need help.
00:01:12There's no future homestead unless we figure out water.
00:01:16What do you see?
00:01:17Looks pretty dry.
00:01:18The animals' lives are at stake.
00:01:21Whoa.
00:01:22We need to help them now.
00:01:23There's a full-blown blizzard on the way to the homestead.
00:01:27We're gonna help this family or we're gonna die trying.
00:01:31It's good to be in a new state.
00:01:52Arkansas is the land of extremes.
00:01:55This place gets all four seasons in one day.
00:02:00It's 33 degrees now.
00:02:02It's gonna be 14 degrees tonight.
00:02:05Pull up your homesteader pants, because it's gonna get cold, wet, and right now it could snow.
00:02:13Yikes.
00:02:15It's late winter, and the rainies answer a plea from deep within northwest Arkansas, where a young family's struggling homestead is besieged by Mother Nature.
00:02:27Situated in the rolling hills of the Ozark Mountains, the area is known for its rich timber and milling industry, owing to the region's dense forests and plentiful rivers.
00:02:40However, the weather extremes make it a gamble for the unprepared.
00:02:46Unpredictable forecasts are common, and harsh summer droughts turn to frigid winter storms, bringing up to 50 inches of annual rainfall and severe flash flooding.
00:02:59And without fundamental survival needs, Northwest Arkansas can quickly break determined, but inexperienced homesteaders.
00:03:11My name is Ashley Curry, and this is my husband, Chris Curry.
00:03:15We live on a 40-acre homestead in northwest Arkansas with our two boys, Balin and Malachi.
00:03:22We moved out to our homestead at the end of 2020, and every day we all wake up feeling blessed.
00:03:29And so this property was our miracle, and we named it Miracle Mountain Homestead.
00:03:35We have goats here, chickens, quail, a couple guineas.
00:03:39We sell the goats' offspring and sell eggs and chicks.
00:03:44The quail are a good meat source because we want to be self-sustainable, and our dream is to have our entire family on this homestead, meaning my parents, my husband's parents, and our children, and for this homestead to provide for generations to come.
00:04:02I love to inherit the homestead, but upon the homestead myself, just having all the animals is really cool, and having all this place to explore.
00:04:14When we first purchased the land, we built the cabin in a short amount of time before winter hit.
00:04:19We did what we had to do, and we didn't think it was going to be permanent.
00:04:23But northwest Arkansas is completely unpredictable, and we have gotten in a little over our heads.
00:04:29We have a lot of flash flooding, and that essentially has tore our foundation up.
00:04:36We have jacked up the house at least three times to try to level it out, where we can just open our front door without issues.
00:04:45And over time, it just keeps settling and drooping, and we're having to spend the time fixing that instead of working on permanent housing.
00:04:53And now it's just been one problem after another.
00:04:58Another big challenge right now is water.
00:05:01I'm positive that there's water here.
00:05:03Unfortunately, it's very expensive to dig well.
00:05:06So we started collecting rainwater.
00:05:08But the catchment tanks, they're not completely enclosed.
00:05:11They're exposed to the elements.
00:05:13We have found frogs in our water.
00:05:15We have found disgusting algae.
00:05:17And now we haul water two to four times a week.
00:05:21We have barely enough water to sustain our daily needs.
00:05:25So we are unable to grow any food.
00:05:28And the amount of money that we're having to spend for a family of four each week at the grocery store is a huge weight on our shoulders.
00:05:35We've been motivated.
00:05:37We've tried.
00:05:38We do our best every single day.
00:05:39But the dream seems harder to reach with each obstacle we have to overcome.
00:05:45Without water security, shelter security, and food security, I'm not sure how much longer we're going to be able to survive out here.
00:05:55Ranius, please come save us.
00:06:07Hello.
00:06:08Hello.
00:06:09Hello.
00:06:10Welcome to Arkansas.
00:06:11Ashley.
00:06:12Christopher.
00:06:13Christopher.
00:06:13Nice to meet you.
00:06:14Marty Rainey.
00:06:15How old are you guys?
00:06:16Eight.
00:06:17And I'm 13.
00:06:18How long has this family been on this property?
00:06:20Four years.
00:06:21Has anything ever gone wrong in the last four years out here?
00:06:25A few weeks ago, one of our goats had babies, and some of them frozen, and now some of our goats are depressed.
00:06:33Oh.
00:06:34So that's not good news.
00:06:35No.
00:06:36What is the goal here?
00:06:38The goal is to be self-sustainable, but we've never been able to grow any food because we don't have a source of water.
00:06:45I can feel water falling from the sky right now, right?
00:06:48Most of our water that we wash dishes with, feed the animals with, comes from the rain.
00:06:53Okay.
00:06:53We just don't have enough to catch the rain.
00:06:55We are not too proud to say we don't know everything.
00:07:00We don't know what we're doing, and we want to learn, and we need help.
00:07:03That's a good place to start.
00:07:06After we met, both of us just knew we were each other's person and that the future gave us two beautiful boys and led to us starting the business.
00:07:17In 2013, we opened up the first organic juice and smoothie bar in Arkansas, and we successfully ran it for nine years.
00:07:27Running the business was exactly the example that I wanted for our kids to show them how to chop the fruits and vegetables and run them through the juicer, and it was a beautiful thing to watch.
00:07:39And then when 2020 hit, we struggled through COVID.
00:07:45And we had to shut down the business.
00:07:48I felt like a failure, but I had to stay motivated and stay positive.
00:07:53We had lived out here for a few months, and it was very sad closing the juice bar, but we started to be able to focus our energies on the homestead.
00:08:02I always wanted that juice bar to provide financially for my mom and dad, and so it became vital to us to be able to still use the homestead to support and help both of our parents to provide a place where they could build a home and not have to worry about paying for their care.
00:08:26It is a way to provide and connect everyone.
00:08:29My dad actually had started building his cabin for one day in the future, but without a source of water, it is not even an option.
00:08:44All right, what am I looking at here, sir?
00:08:47So this is the rain catchment system that we first started off with, and so the water catches on the bottom,
00:08:53and then we have a sump pump that pumps it to the top, where we have an inline pump that pumps it to the house.
00:09:00Are you hauling water, too?
00:09:02Yeah, if it's too dry, then we haul it from a spring eight miles down the road or so.
00:09:07Okay.
00:09:08Have you looked around here for water?
00:09:10I personally think there's water right here, and the sycamore trees just keep on coming back.
00:09:15I heard that that's a good sign of water.
00:09:17They need a lot of water.
00:09:18Here, this part of Arkansas, we've got 50 inches of rain.
00:09:22Wow.
00:09:23So if you've got a couple sycamore trees, that doesn't mean anything to me.
00:09:27In a small tour of this property, I'm seeing rain water everywhere.
00:09:32But when I look at the water they're catching in those tanks, it's certainly not potable.
00:09:38The really big question is, what's going on?
00:09:42I knew we got a lot of rain because we lose so much water.
00:09:45What do you mean, lose it?
00:09:47That one overflows.
00:09:48This one overflows.
00:09:49We had these two.
00:09:51Yes.
00:09:51But these got busted and frozen.
00:09:53Okay.
00:09:54If this fills up with water, it just goes over the top.
00:09:57Yeah.
00:09:57That concerns me a little bit because your house is right here.
00:10:01What kind of a foundation does this have?
00:10:04This is a pallet foundation.
00:10:08Hold on.
00:10:10There is no such thing as a pallet foundation.
00:10:15It wasn't the plan.
00:10:16Our plan was to live in our camper and save money and then get a traditional foundation.
00:10:21And then my father-in-law said, we can build you something to live in.
00:10:25I'm just going to say it right now.
00:10:27You've got a problem.
00:10:29This pains me.
00:10:31It's just a matter of time with the water overflowing.
00:10:33It's coming this direction under the house.
00:10:36These pallets are on the clock right now.
00:10:41Building your house on these pallets, they're going to pay for that someday.
00:10:45So this homestead has some issues.
00:10:49So we cleared this area and in my mind, it would be a good spot for a garden because it has the potential for a lot of sunshine.
00:11:00Have you attempted to garden before?
00:11:04We have not because you can't keep a plant alive.
00:11:06You can't water it.
00:11:08So you don't have water to even water a plant?
00:11:10No.
00:11:10What was the dream initially?
00:11:13We wanted this to be a multi-generational homestead.
00:11:17We wanted to provide a place where my parents and Chris's parents could live here.
00:11:22But again, when you don't have the basic necessity of water, it's not possible.
00:11:27This is a lot of pressure.
00:11:29This homestead is pretty concerning to me because not only do I see a big family, a ton of animals,
00:11:37for a homestead with no water, it looks like there's water everywhere.
00:11:41And right now, I'm realizing there's no future homestead unless we figure out water.
00:11:52This is the goat barn.
00:11:54You're having babies in the middle of winter?
00:11:57How did that happen?
00:11:58We really need to separate the boy goats and the mama goats from all the rest of them.
00:12:03But you didn't.
00:12:04There was actually more goats and they ended up freezing because it was too cold.
00:12:07We've had to actually bring in the mama and baby new goats inside because of how cold it's been.
00:12:14Do we have to do that tonight?
00:12:16Yeah.
00:12:16Yeah.
00:12:18Holy smokes.
00:12:20There might be 100 animals on this homestead.
00:12:22They've lost count at this point.
00:12:24Some of them are very young goats and they're all in danger of the wet, cold weather.
00:12:30And tonight, it's supposed to be 17 degrees.
00:12:33And right now, we have no way to save any of these animals.
00:12:38This is our quail run slash coop.
00:12:42How are these quail doing in the cold?
00:12:44Not very well.
00:12:45Whenever it rains like this and gets really muddy, they can get sick that way.
00:12:52Quail, when healthy, are a valuable homestead resource for quick egg and meat production,
00:12:58providing not only protein, but also a potential income source.
00:13:03Because of their small size, quail costs less to raise than traditional poultry,
00:13:08making them an efficient option for small-scale farming or homesteading.
00:13:13I definitely think it needs a lot more protection from the elements.
00:13:20Do you have some hay?
00:13:20Yeah.
00:13:21Can you go get some?
00:13:22Yeah.
00:13:23Okay.
00:13:23Let's go do it right now.
00:13:28I think that's about enough.
00:13:29I'll tell you what.
00:13:31I feel like the temperature's dropping as we speak.
00:13:35Oh, yeah.
00:13:36Just get all in those egg crates.
00:13:44You think that one's alive in there, sleeping, or you think it's not?
00:13:49I think it passed.
00:13:52Okay.
00:13:54All right.
00:13:54I'm really worried about the loss of life on this homestead.
00:14:01This is a food source for them.
00:14:03This is a source of income.
00:14:05And Balin and Malachi have a lot of time invested into this livestock dream.
00:14:10They are putting work in.
00:14:12And when you raise livestock, a predator can come in many forms.
00:14:18But right now, the big killer is bad cold weather.
00:14:23A lot more is going to have to happen if you're going to have a better success raising livestock in the wintertime.
00:14:38Let's just cut right to the chase.
00:14:41Food, shelter, water.
00:14:43What did you guys discover when it comes to food?
00:14:46There's no garden.
00:14:47There's no greenhouse.
00:14:48They haven't attempted gardening because there's no water.
00:14:51I actually feel for Ashley, and she's definitely at the breaking point.
00:14:58There's a lot of livestock, but there's no separation of any of the animals.
00:15:04However, the quail have their own spot, but it's abysmal.
00:15:09And we found a dead quail in there.
00:15:13They've been here four years.
00:15:15They've not produced one drop of water from the ground here.
00:15:18I don't know how that's possible.
00:15:21Everywhere you look, there's water.
00:15:22There's water running right here.
00:15:25So they're not self-sufficient, self-sustaining.
00:15:27How are they doing in shelter?
00:15:29I would say they're in trouble.
00:15:32They built a house on pallets.
00:15:33It's only a matter of time before that floor does start to rot.
00:15:36But it's such a daunting task.
00:15:39I think we're going to set it on a back burner and try to start focusing on what?
00:15:44Water.
00:15:45Exactly.
00:15:51How are you guys?
00:15:52Pretty good.
00:15:53We've made some observations about the barns and the pens and the wet ground.
00:15:59You're drowning in water, but dying of thirst.
00:16:04Your hope is dying.
00:16:06It's affecting your lives.
00:16:08It's affecting these livestock.
00:16:09It's affecting everything.
00:16:11I understand something died since we've been here, quail.
00:16:14Every time it rains, we lose quail.
00:16:16Every time it rains?
00:16:17Every time it rains.
00:16:19If it's a heavy one, it seems.
00:16:20It's because they're on the ground.
00:16:21When it comes to the basics of homesteads, these beautiful people are striking out.
00:16:30What can we do to help them?
00:16:32I'm not sure I know the answer.
00:16:34Because this homestead is definitely intimidating and challenging, but we'll throw everything we
00:16:40have at it.
00:16:41Our work is cut out for us, all right?
00:16:43That said, you're not happy.
00:16:45There's problems here, and that has to change.
00:16:51Good morning!
00:17:04It's day two on the Curry's 40-acre homestead in northwest Arkansas.
00:17:10The sun came out.
00:17:11That's good.
00:17:12What's the forecast?
00:17:13Do you know?
00:17:13Might be some heavier weather tomorrow.
00:17:16Okay.
00:17:16And on the main road to the property, Marty and Chris begin searching for a permanent
00:17:22water source.
00:17:24How's the animals?
00:17:25They're doing great.
00:17:26Okay.
00:17:27We put some more pine shavings in the quail, and then also did a wind block with some particle
00:17:31board around the bottom edges.
00:17:32Makes me feel good.
00:17:33That's good news.
00:17:36Well, our mission here is to try to get that thing on your property.
00:17:40We need water.
00:17:42Our number one issue is water.
00:17:45I've found some areas that there could be a spring towards the cabin and towards their
00:17:52sycamore trees.
00:17:53So we'll start in those spots and see if we can dig a big hole that fills up with water.
00:17:58We'll be good to go.
00:18:01Marty will search the homestead for a permanent water source, digging 10 feet down in the most
00:18:07promising areas near the Curry's cabin.
00:18:09Once he determines the source to be viable, he'll install a culvert in the spring, adding
00:18:16gravel to filter the water, before finally digging a trench towards the cabin and installing
00:18:22a water line to gravity feed the precious resource to the family's home.
00:18:27Marty and I were going to search for water close to the house.
00:18:40Not being able to find the solution or make this work is just something that is in the
00:18:46back of my head.
00:18:47I think it ties back to the business ending the way that it did.
00:18:50It's still hard not to feel like it was a failure.
00:18:54And if this dream of ours were to fall apart, I just don't know how I would deal with that.
00:19:00Here we go.
00:19:02So Christopher says there could be water close to the house.
00:19:06So the answers to all their problems might just be right here.
00:19:12We're going to have to dig deep, hopefully not too many times.
00:19:25It got cold last night.
00:19:27Yeah.
00:19:27Yeah.
00:19:28Hopefully we're able to save those quail from a bad night.
00:19:34Okay.
00:19:35You came in here and did more.
00:19:37Yeah.
00:19:38Put some pine pellets and pine shavings.
00:19:41That's amazing.
00:19:42So none of them died.
00:19:43None of them died.
00:19:44You counted them?
00:19:45Yep.
00:19:46Shake my head.
00:19:48Finding out that Balin and Malachi went the extra mile and added more insulation over the
00:19:54night to save those quail, that just shows me how much they're invested in this entire
00:19:59livestock journey.
00:20:01Okay.
00:20:02It's only going to be a matter of time before the rain trickles through and it starts seeping
00:20:07in and all this is going to be turned back into mud.
00:20:10And so the only way we can really help these quail is by stopping that rain from coming
00:20:16in here once and for all and getting them up off the ground.
00:20:19Matt will remodel the quail coop by first removing the battered roof and constructing a replacement
00:20:27with upcycled materials found on the property.
00:20:30Next, he'll utilize more salvaged parts to create nesting boxes elevated above the muddy
00:20:37ground.
00:20:38Finally, he'll insulate with straw, ensuring year-round survivability against Arkansas's
00:20:45elements.
00:20:45First things first.
00:20:50We need to replace this roofing.
00:20:53I'm excited that Matt's here and I'm really looking forward to work with him.
00:20:57Lift it.
00:20:58Like a waterfall.
00:20:59Let's let it pour off this way.
00:21:01Pour this off real quick.
00:21:02It's not all yet.
00:21:03We're willing to do whatever it takes to improve the animals' home and anything we can do to
00:21:09help them get better.
00:21:10Hopefully it'll be a lot easier around here.
00:21:12Now that we have that sagging roofing out of the way, let's build a proper roof on this
00:21:17thing.
00:21:18Okay.
00:21:19Let's do it.
00:21:20You ready to start making some changes?
00:21:22I'm ready.
00:21:24Downhill from the cabin.
00:21:27There's sun.
00:21:28Yes.
00:21:29Oh my gosh.
00:21:30Thank the Lord.
00:21:31Ashley wants this homesteading dream for the kids and the fact of the matter is, it's not
00:21:37working.
00:21:38So I want to get her to a place where she's growing food.
00:21:41I think first things first for me is try to push out this footprint a little bit.
00:21:47The amount of sun that you already get this early in the morning is a good sign.
00:21:51And I feel like the options are pretty limited when it comes to how much land you've cleared.
00:21:56Yeah.
00:21:57So this is a good jump start.
00:21:58So I'll take it.
00:21:59Okay.
00:22:00Ready?
00:22:01Do it.
00:22:02Okay.
00:22:03Woo.
00:22:04Back uphill towards the family's cabin.
00:22:13That's not good.
00:22:14I don't see anything.
00:22:16It's not happy.
00:22:26That's deep.
00:22:27There's nothing that resembles a spring.
00:22:31Definitely empty.
00:22:33I think what we'll do is we'll fill this hole back up.
00:22:36Before it gets dark, we'll try to find one up there.
00:22:38It'll be a miracle.
00:22:39But guess what?
00:22:40I'll take it.
00:22:41Coffee breaks over.
00:22:42Back to work.
00:22:43Okay.
00:22:44Grab it and bring it up there.
00:22:48It's pretty light.
00:22:53While Baylin and Malachi gather material to build a roof for the quail pen, Matt second
00:22:59guesses his game plan.
00:23:01My first priority is protecting the food sources for these homesteaders, but me and these boys
00:23:08are going to take two days making these quails safe and we're not going to have done one
00:23:12thing for the goats.
00:23:15Usually I wouldn't have time to build a structure, but on this property, it's getting very cold.
00:23:22I'm really concerned about these animals and I need help because I want to be able to save
00:23:27them all at the same time.
00:23:31Hey Misty, can we talk?
00:23:33Yeah.
00:23:34What's up?
00:23:35This might be the craziest request.
00:23:38It's going to be colder tonight and I don't have time to save both these quail and goats.
00:23:44Okay.
00:23:45And so I am asking for your help to literally stop working here and come and help with the
00:23:53livestock.
00:23:55I do think the animals' lives are at stake and it's very important that we drop everything
00:24:01and we help them now.
00:24:04This is just one of those homesteads where we're not going to just go on with business
00:24:09as usual when animals' lives are in danger.
00:24:14And this is one homestead where they might not get a greenhouse.
00:24:18I mean like, now it's just sinking in.
00:24:23Yeah, it's starting to sink in.
00:24:26Okay.
00:24:28Life takes priority over everything else.
00:24:31So let's go take a look and see what we can do and come up with a plan.
00:24:35Let's save some livestock.
00:24:41Let's go.
00:24:44Let's talk about a few things.
00:24:46What are you doing right now with temperatures this low with kids that young?
00:24:51We do a deep litter method where the manure gets covered with fresh straw so it radiates heat
00:24:57at night.
00:24:58But we have some that were born just four or five days ago and so we have been bringing
00:25:03them in at night and putting them in a dog kennel to keep them safe.
00:25:09Newborn goats or kids require special care in their first few weeks of life.
00:25:15And since they are especially vulnerable to hypothermia, winter is among the worst times
00:25:21for breeding.
00:25:22Because of this breeders will strategically separate males and females to keep from mating
00:25:28year round.
00:25:31Where are they right now?
00:25:34Whoa.
00:25:36Those guys are little kids in the dead of winter time.
00:25:40Yeah, it's awful.
00:25:42I'm so glad Matt called me over because what is happening at the livestock pens is not good.
00:25:48We have four day old baby goats in freezing temperatures in the dead of winter time.
00:25:53And it's this full blown 12 alarm situation that one person isn't going to be able to fix.
00:26:00He's shivering.
00:26:01Yeah, this is way too cold for these four day old kids.
00:26:08We're going to change some things starting today.
00:26:16This is full blown emergency.
00:26:18Meow.
00:26:19Oh yeah, it's okay.
00:26:24So we have some four day old kids.
00:26:27The temperatures are eight degrees last night.
00:26:29It's about 20 degrees right now in the sun.
00:26:32There is not going to be loss of life on our watch.
00:26:35All right, what'd you find?
00:26:38Found some heat lamps that we used for our brooders last year with the chicks.
00:26:41Okay, well we'll take what we can get.
00:26:43Okay.
00:26:44Okay.
00:26:45When we started homesteading, it was all excitement and tackling one thing at a time.
00:26:53And after four years of it, the long term vision is getting harder to maintain because
00:26:59the weight of everything just is so heavy.
00:27:03And the goats are a very large part of our homestead.
00:27:06So knowing that they can survive through a night of cold is exactly what we need right now.
00:27:13I think we block this off from anybody getting in.
00:27:16Right now this free for all breeding program leading to the consequence of having babies born in the dead of wintertime is not great.
00:27:24We want to prevent this from ever happening again right which is separating this buck.
00:27:30So starting with a structure and a permanent fenced-in area.
00:27:34I'm thinking like a shared space when it comes to this barn and then a separation pen for the buck.
00:27:40Perfect.
00:27:41Perfect.
00:27:42Okay.
00:27:43Here we go.
00:27:44Misty will build an 8 by 20 foot barn to house and divide the goats.
00:27:48First, she'll mill cedar trees from the property for dimensional lumber, including the corner posts and frame.
00:27:56Once the structure is enclosed, she'll put in separate stalls for the buck, does and baby goats in order to control breeding and prevent unnecessary loss of life.
00:28:14Okay, first rock in, better than a pallet.
00:28:18First step, we're good, and right now we need to figure out what this framing is.
00:28:24But the good news is I look around and I see a ton of materials that we can use and the next step will be to start sourcing lumber.
00:28:31All right, I'm gonna just kind of backfill a little bit and then we will set the next one.
00:28:36Here we go.
00:28:38The morning of day three on the Curry's homestead.
00:28:49Nice and clean.
00:28:50Marty, Chris, and Foreman Clint shift gears momentarily from the water hunt to source lumber for the livestock builds.
00:28:58Just a kiss.
00:29:00That's it.
00:29:05Need another hand?
00:29:08Who is this?
00:29:09This is my father, Rick.
00:29:10Oh, nice to meet you.
00:29:11So when you come here to work or you're just stopping by, passing through, what's happening?
00:29:15Well, I come here to work.
00:29:16This homestead would not be possible without my dad.
00:29:21He helped us build our small home and he started building his cabin on the homestead.
00:29:27But if there is not a source of water, there is no way he could stay here forever.
00:29:33I can do anything.
00:29:34You can do anything.
00:29:35Anything.
00:29:36We're doing a little bit of logging.
00:29:37We guys want to stake these logs out.
00:29:39You interested?
00:29:40I'm ready to hit it.
00:29:42Let's go.
00:29:44Okay, that's two.
00:29:53We're going to start speeding up.
00:29:56Later that day, Matt, Baylin, and Malachi salvaged materials from the homestead to fortify the quail
00:30:05coop.
00:30:06The salvage is going really good.
00:30:09The boys are working fast and we're definitely finding enough materials for the roof raptors.
00:30:14Every screw that we've taken out, we're going to use again.
00:30:18And so, I mean, heck, we got a box of screws here that's worth 20 bucks.
00:30:22And we pretty much have all the fasteners we need, all the framing we need.
00:30:26So we're going to have a roof on this thing before the sun goes down.
00:30:29We're just going to butt this up just like so.
00:30:33Screw it to one of our scrap pieces.
00:30:36Matt is teaching us about building scabs for the wood to extend it.
00:30:44For the roof to have proper shelter for the quail.
00:30:47Let it rip and then bring it up to the wood.
00:30:50Let it rip!
00:30:53One day I hope to build like my own little place on the homestead.
00:30:56So I think it's cool that we get to learn more stuff to be able to help any way we can around on the homestead.
00:31:06That's good.
00:31:08Malachi and Balin are really good to work with because they already do their chores.
00:31:13Okay, don't drop it.
00:31:14Why not?
00:31:15They just need a little direction on where to put their time and efforts in.
00:31:20Because those skills are just little building blocks that build into greater confidence to help the homestead.
00:31:27All right, now that we've raised this wall up five and a half inches, let's get the raptors on here and let's put a proper roof on this thing.
00:31:33We're pretty excited.
00:31:35This new roof is going to block the quail from the wind and the rain.
00:31:39I think we're going to have no more quail deaths.
00:31:42All right, let's keep working.
00:31:45Back uphill.
00:31:55Look out, we're going to go for it.
00:31:57Marty's water search pushes on.
00:31:59As he breaks ground near the sycamore trees, Chris suspects are a sign of an ample water source.
00:32:05I'm looking for a water source close to the house.
00:32:10I've spent more of my time than I expected, but I'll never sleep well at night if I don't try.
00:32:18What we're trying to do right now is follow up on your sycamore theory.
00:32:23There's a sycamore.
00:32:25There's a sycamore.
00:32:26We're digging right between them.
00:32:28We'll give it a little bit more.
00:32:30We dug probably deeper than we dug the first time, and so far we found a bunch of clay that wasn't very promising.
00:32:39But hopefully we can find a large quantity of water so we can actually survive and keep going on the homestead.
00:32:46Look around this edge.
00:32:48Is anything seeping in anywhere?
00:32:53What do you see?
00:32:54Looks pretty dry.
00:32:56All right.
00:32:57This is the second hole I've dug.
00:33:00It's not promising.
00:33:02Appreciate you trying.
00:33:04There's nothing in there.
00:33:06No water.
00:33:08And they haven't even begun to figure out a way to fix their pallet foundation.
00:33:13Good.
00:33:15At this point, we will need a miracle.
00:33:19Okay, now it's raining.
00:33:29Not my favorite conditions to find water.
00:33:32After striking out twice in their hunt for a dependable water source, Chris leads Marty on the far edge of the homestead for what might be their final hope.
00:33:42I'm looking for a spring that's so deep that's running on top of the bedrock that I can convince myself that it's not surface rainwater.
00:33:55These logging roads were already here.
00:33:58Oh, nice.
00:33:59They must have just timbered it a couple years before we got here.
00:34:02This was just forest floor this time last year.
00:34:05Oh, wow.
00:34:06It's really flowing there.
00:34:07I mean, look at this.
00:34:08What's going on here?
00:34:09Where's that volume coming from right there?
00:34:12I think that's coming out of the road.
00:34:14It looks like it, yeah, because it's kind of trailing.
00:34:16It looks like there's more.
00:34:17Okay.
00:34:24Hey!
00:34:27Look at this road.
00:34:28Where's all this water coming from?
00:34:31Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like a spring.
00:34:36It does.
00:34:37When it dries up, we're not sure.
00:34:39I mean, if you go deep enough, that could be still there, but...
00:34:42If we could find water right here, is that better than what you have now?
00:34:45For sure.
00:34:46For sure.
00:34:47Look at this.
00:34:48Look at it bubbling.
00:34:49So, this is where you find springs, on the side of a bank, on the side of a mountain, on a bench where the water settles.
00:34:58I think it's just shouting at us to investigate, so let's do that.
00:35:02Let's do it.
00:35:03It's coming up right here.
00:35:13I didn't realize that rock was so big, it's in the road, so it's gotta go.
00:35:18That thing looks a little wet.
00:35:31That looks like a lot of freaking water.
00:35:33That is a lot of water.
00:35:34It's gushing in.
00:35:35I mean, a five-gallon bucket would be overflowing right now.
00:35:39Well, that's a really good sign.
00:35:41We're gonna keep digging.
00:35:42All right, let's go down, bud.
00:35:44If we dig a big hole, maybe it'll fill in.
00:35:48And if it does, we might create yet another homestead miracle.
00:35:54Man, are we glad to see you.
00:36:06Over in the new livestock grounds, Misty brings in help to get the goat barn started.
00:36:12Misty, how's it going?
00:36:13Dave Burns.
00:36:14Dave Burns.
00:36:15Nice to meet you.
00:36:16This build is all about using materials on hand, so we called in this guy who does a mill.
00:36:20And I see an opportunity to teach Ashley how to mill the trees on their property.
00:36:25We actually have a bunch of trees already bucked up and ready to mill.
00:36:28We're ready.
00:36:29Okay, I'm gonna grab you some logs.
00:36:31Have you ever worked on a mill before?
00:36:33No, this is awesome.
00:36:34Okay.
00:36:35Is there any hydraulics?
00:36:36This is just manpower.
00:36:37This is full manual.
00:36:38Yeah, full manual.
00:36:39Yeah.
00:36:40It's what separates the women from the men.
00:36:44Okay, I'm gonna grab the first log and come right back.
00:36:46All right, let's make some salt dust.
00:36:48Misty and I are working on a barn to keep all of the goats in but separated at the same
00:36:57time so we won't have unplanned kitting in the middle of winter.
00:37:02Yeah!
00:37:03We've had 10 kids die this winter because they were born in the middle of the night.
00:37:09So, the thought of that never happening again is so encouraging.
00:37:14All right, we're gonna make a pass so I'm about to engage.
00:37:18I'll walk you through it.
00:37:19Okay.
00:37:20When I pull this lever down, that drive belt right there is gonna engage.
00:37:23Okay.
00:37:31The moment you show Ashley how to use a skill saw, a drill, how to frame a wall, she does it to perfection.
00:37:37Perfect.
00:37:38She's becoming a part of the solution and we're changing this homestead together.
00:37:46That's awesome.
00:37:50That felt like the first step to really being self-sustainable was taking resources from our property and turning them into something usable for a need that we have.
00:38:03So exciting.
00:38:04Thank you so much for coming.
00:38:05Yeah.
00:38:06You're welcome.
00:38:07It's only getting colder this week.
00:38:11Now, there's a full-blown blizzard on the way to the homestead.
00:38:14So, for me, there is no plan B.
00:38:17This is all we have.
00:38:18Every single second is a make it or break it moment when it comes to this livestock and that is pretty alarming.
00:38:26I think the buck does not get the whole space.
00:38:29No.
00:38:30It'd be great to have a spot to have the mom and the babies together.
00:38:33Yeah.
00:38:34Separated from everybody else.
00:38:35Yes.
00:38:36I agree.
00:38:37Looks good.
00:38:38I'm moving in.
00:38:39Woo, woo, woo.
00:38:40Okay, boys.
00:38:41I still am going to stand by the fact that I don't want any of these quail to be on the ground, at least during the winter.
00:38:58See where this chicken is?
00:38:59Uh-huh.
00:39:00This area is going to be basically like a little birdcage where those quail will live.
00:39:07I think it could work pretty well.
00:39:08Yeah.
00:39:13When it comes to livestock, bigger is not always better.
00:39:17And so, right now, the boys and I, we're building a coop within a coop.
00:39:21This right here will be our installation that we use.
00:39:2421 inches, boys.
00:39:25Not every type of livestock bird needs a big old coop.
00:39:30These are very small quail.
00:39:33And this is all the space we need.
00:39:36And if it's dry out here and it gets warmer, you know, you can give them more space.
00:39:40But right now, it's too cold and they need to be locked in there.
00:39:43They're going to be warm and they're going to survive.
00:39:45There we go.
00:39:46Looking good.
00:39:47Okay.
00:39:48Are you ready to wrangle?
00:39:49Yeah.
00:39:50We got 16 quail to catch.
00:39:58Okay.
00:39:59Moment of truth.
00:40:01Let's see how this spring's doing.
00:40:05Oh, my God.
00:40:0710 feet deep on this side.
00:40:09About six feet deep on this side.
00:40:11It's 20 feet long.
00:40:12It's six feet across.
00:40:13Uh, yeah.
00:40:15Okay.
00:40:16That's a game changer.
00:40:18Or as we say on these homesteads, that's a life changer.
00:40:22I wasn't quite sure it was going to happen.
00:40:25Misty or Matt, you guys got a radio near?
00:40:28Go for Matt.
00:40:29Did you find Christopher, Ashley, the boys, and all of you guys head down here?
00:40:35Okay.
00:40:36Copy.
00:40:37Me and Ashley are coming down now.
00:40:39This is kind of an emergency, so don't dilly-dally, okay?
00:40:42Okay.
00:40:43We're on our way.
00:40:45We're going down the driveway.
00:40:47No dilly-dally.
00:40:48I see my dad.
00:40:49All right.
00:40:50Come on over here, fam.
00:40:51Check it out.
00:40:53Whoa.
00:40:54Oh, my gosh.
00:40:55Oh, my goodness.
00:40:56Whoa.
00:40:57Oh, my gosh.
00:40:58I've already measured this.
00:40:59There's over 5,000 gallons of water.
00:41:015,000?
00:41:02He's telling me.
00:41:03Oh, wow.
00:41:04I've never seen this reaction on the homestead.
00:41:06It's like laugh crying.
00:41:08Yeah.
00:41:09Wow.
00:41:11Everywhere we turn, God provides another miracle.
00:41:14Well, this is a miracle on a homestead without water.
00:41:17Yeah.
00:41:18How many years?
00:41:19Four years?
00:41:20Yeah.
00:41:21Four years.
00:41:22Water is life.
00:41:23It's life for us.
00:41:24It's life for our animals.
00:41:25It's the time saved that we're not having to haul this.
00:41:28It's the security of knowing if we're stuck here for two weeks,
00:41:31and the snow or ice, that we're not going to be without water.
00:41:35I mean, Marty, this changes everything.
00:41:37What about you, young man, Malachi?
00:41:39It takes a lot of stress off my mom and dad,
00:41:42and I'm very happy to see this.
00:41:48I'm so happy.
00:41:49Let's leave.
00:41:50All right.
00:41:51Let's leave you guys.
00:41:52Okay, guys.
00:41:53This is 100% life-changing.
00:41:55This changes everything.
00:41:56Sometimes it's worth having years of hardship
00:42:00to really, really appreciate something that so many people take for granted, like water.
00:42:06This makes us sustainable.
00:42:08Yeah.
00:42:09This is so much bigger than we ever hoped for.
00:42:14I had no idea.
00:42:16He made me keep it a secret.
00:42:19You knew?
00:42:20You knew?
00:42:21It wasn't filled like this, though.
00:42:24It was just trickling in.
00:42:26Oh, my gosh.
00:42:27I could have never kept this a secret.
00:42:31This is amazing.
00:42:34The governor of Arkansas has declared a state of emergency.
00:42:38Word on the street that this is going to get worse.
00:42:40Everybody is just kind of scattering.
00:42:42It's really starting to come down.
00:42:44We're out of here.
00:43:02It is really, really cold this morning.
00:43:04It's day four on the rescue of the Currys' homestead, where freezing temperatures remain a concern.
00:43:11As you can see, it snowed some last night.
00:43:14The weather is not supposed to be good for the rest of the week, so we're just really praying that we can get through some of these projects.
00:43:21And this morning, Misty checks on the goats to see how they've fared in the cold snap.
00:43:28Thank goodness we were able to keep the baby goats warm enough with the heat lamps, but that's just a makeshift daytime solution.
00:43:35It's too cold today for the babies to be outside.
00:43:38The temperatures have dipped, so the baby's got to be moved inside.
00:43:42Okay, here we go.
00:43:44So now they're inside the house 24 hours a day, and we've got to get this barn done quick.
00:43:50So right now, I need a bunch of lumber.
00:43:53The mill's not running.
00:43:54That's not a good sign.
00:43:56No.
00:43:57Yesterday, it rained on us all day while we were milling.
00:44:01Oh, man.
00:44:02But I think a lot of the water that was on the equipment froze last night, and the whole machine has just froze up.
00:44:08The cable system's froze.
00:44:10Drip tank, water lines, everything's froze.
00:44:14Well, that's not good.
00:44:16No.
00:44:17I think if we got a space heater and dropped a tarp over this and fired it up, or we could hold that heat inside of there, I think we could probably thaw these parts out.
00:44:27Okay.
00:44:28It's worth a try.
00:44:29Yep.
00:44:30I'll grab a space heater, you grab a tarp, and we'll be right back.
00:44:34Sounds good.
00:44:35Here we go.
00:44:36Thanks, Dave.
00:44:37I'm a little bit frustrated.
00:44:42Right now, the mill's not milling one board.
00:44:46So it's a rough start to the morning, but hopefully, we're going to thaw some things out and get back to work.
00:44:52Hopefully, it doesn't take too long to thaw out, and we'll check on you in a little bit.
00:44:56Okay.
00:44:57Okay?
00:44:58Woo!
00:44:59It's going to be a day, folks.
00:45:00It's going to be a day.
00:45:01All right, that's music to my ears.
00:45:11A spring producing so much water you can hear it.
00:45:15Now, the next challenge is how do you get this water from here all the way up to that homestead?
00:45:23You got some sun.
00:45:26You can just set it down there, big guy.
00:45:28That is a huge culvert.
00:45:31One system that we use on homesteads is a culvert.
00:45:36Three things are going to happen.
00:45:38We're going to take the culvert to the spring.
00:45:40We stick it down into the ground, and then we'll use gravel and fill around that culvert up to the water table,
00:45:49giving the water, giving the spring a place to travel, to move, and make its way inside the well casing.
00:45:57Watch out.
00:45:59Then dig a trench and put in a water line.
00:46:04Do me a favor.
00:46:05See if we can start rolling it down.
00:46:08Thank you, sir.
00:46:09Thank you, sir.
00:46:10Just this morning, I was thinking that this is not going to be possible,
00:46:16but it looks like we're actually going to have water straight to the house
00:46:20and not have to transport water ever again is what we're hoping.
00:46:27The last couple of years, I felt powerless in a way because I would like to get my parents on this homestead.
00:46:33About six years ago now, my dad had a severe stroke.
00:46:37That provides a lot of challenges for my mother.
00:46:40She needs a lot of help right now.
00:46:42And it's been really important for Ashley and I to try to make this a place where they can move
00:46:48and then we can provide help for them.
00:46:50And I wasn't exactly sure if we'd be able to accomplish our goal of having a multi-generational homestead
00:46:56because of the water situation.
00:46:58So right now, I feel a lot more positive on how the future is going to be on this homestead.
00:47:16All right!
00:47:17Woo-hoo!
00:47:19The mill's up and running right now.
00:47:21So the buck has his little zone and then we really went all in on with this wall.
00:47:27Hopefully you can't bust through it.
00:47:28He has shown how strong he is.
00:47:31We got lots of work to do and we're one step closer to keeping these babies warm and out of our house.
00:47:37In the world of stalls, ideally it'd be this whole back row.
00:47:41Yeah.
00:47:42Eight feet that way.
00:47:43I'm going to grab some two by fours.
00:47:45Now we are going to set up three kitting stalls.
00:47:48And I'm just praying that we're going to finish some stuff today.
00:47:51Okay!
00:47:56Woo-hoo!
00:48:09Hang on.
00:48:10We've got him listen to the forecast.
00:48:12We have winter weather alerts in effect for North Arkansas.
00:48:15And right now we're dealing with freezing rain and snow in downtown Little Rock.
00:48:19Arctic air is moving in from north and northwest.
00:48:22All right.
00:48:30I never thought in a million years it would be this cold.
00:48:33Halfway through the rescue, an imposing weather report forces the Rainies and Currys to game plan next steps.
00:48:40People are saying the words polar vortex.
00:48:45What does that even mean?
00:48:46I don't know.
00:48:47A polar vortex is a massive rotating band of winds that circles the poles.
00:48:55When Arctic air unexpectedly surges south into the states, it can bring dangerous conditions, not just for the unprepared, but also for weak wooden structures, which risk collapse under the strain of rapidly shifting elements.
00:49:12We haven't even talked about this house.
00:49:16Yes, it was built on pallets.
00:49:19We're not going to sit here and criticize it or be judgmental.
00:49:22But if this house was in town, they would condemn it.
00:49:26As this cold temperature has descended down upon Arkansas, I can see there's another problem on this homestead as life impacting as no water.
00:49:40The real problem right now in this homestead is unsafe shelter.
00:49:45In spite of an impending polar event, I want to put some type of solid foundation that is going to be safer than that building on pallets of footprint for a new cabin that could withstand any storm.
00:50:04Arkansas wants to throw at it.
00:50:07Tonight, you probably could get by just fine.
00:50:10But how does this house fare during cold snaps?
00:50:14As long as we have firewood, we've never been cold.
00:50:17Do you have firewood?
00:50:18Yeah.
00:50:19We got to work on some today.
00:50:20Okay.
00:50:21Let's be honest about this.
00:50:22If there's a one day, two day, three day storm, I'm just reminding everybody to, you know, let's take care of animals and each other.
00:50:31And for now, we'll get back to work.
00:50:34Our house is by no means safe in a storm.
00:50:39One wall is almost completely glass windows.
00:50:42The foundation is on pallets.
00:50:45And so literally when sirens have gone off, all I've been able to do is just sit on the bed in the middle of the night and pray that God protects us.
00:50:54And now that bad weather is coming in, everything is really overwhelming right now.
00:51:00There's just a lot to consider.
00:51:01Oh my gosh.
00:51:02As temperatures continue to fall and the weather worsens.
00:51:17State of emergency.
00:51:18Let's go.
00:51:19Misty and Matt, get over here, please.
00:51:20Family.
00:51:21The rescue hits a crisis point.
00:51:22The governor of Arkansas has declared a state of emergency, mainly for the highways and transportation and moving people around.
00:51:27All of our team has to leave.
00:51:28That's protocol.
00:51:29So we don't really know what's going to happen.
00:51:31The word on the street is this is going to get worse and worse.
00:51:32We were praying for the best outcome for the weather and the morning started really well.
00:51:37And now it seems to be coming down at the moment.
00:51:38So we've got to think about the safety of everybody out here.
00:51:39I feel like we just tried to get as much work as we possibly can until we got to get out of here because we don't want to be stranded here.
00:51:45Let's move these animals.
00:51:46Under proper shelter.
00:51:47Let's get them in the new barn so they don't freeze to death.
00:52:00Sound good?
00:52:01I'm going to grab a heater.
00:52:05Let's go boy.
00:52:05Yeah, Kenny Shaw.
00:52:06Okay, please.
00:52:07Let's move these animals under proper shelter.
00:52:10Let's get them in the new barn so they don't freeze to death.
00:52:13Sound good?
00:52:14All right.
00:52:14I'm going to grab a heater.
00:52:15I'm grabbing some of those heaters for those babies.
00:52:21We're going to...
00:52:22Are you filming anything with the ghosts?
00:52:24Are you guys done?
00:52:25Are you out of here?
00:52:26I've got to get people out.
00:52:26Okay, bye.
00:52:27So, yeah.
00:52:31Everybody is just kind of scattering
00:52:32so our production crew doesn't get stranded.
00:52:36It's really starting to come down.
00:52:38We're going to focus on these animals,
00:52:40move them inside,
00:52:41and then set up these little electric heaters.
00:52:44Okay.
00:52:45We're moving the kids into the new barn.
00:52:51Almost 60 degrees inside the barn.
00:52:54So we did good.
00:52:55We moved all the kids inside with the mamas.
00:52:58But we got to go.
00:52:59It's like no time to waste.
00:53:01We're out of here.
00:53:02Good morning.
00:53:21This weather is definitely slowing us up.
00:53:24It's another cold one today.
00:53:26A little bit colder than the last day.
00:53:29The roads into our homestead are still pretty covered.
00:53:33I'm not exactly sure when the rain years are coming back.
00:53:36I can't really complain.
00:53:37A lot has happened.
00:53:39We're going to see how the rest of the time goes,
00:53:41if we're actually going to be able to finish
00:53:42or what's happening.
00:53:56Fire it up!
00:53:58With a day's worth of work lost to the storm.
00:54:02Okay.
00:54:05Hey, you!
00:54:06Mid-afternoon temperatures warm just enough to resume work.
00:54:10But now, with 36 hours remaining in the rescue
00:54:14and critical projects yet to be completed.
00:54:17Have you given any thought to a place you might build your home
00:54:22on this 40-acre piece of land?
00:54:25We've got a few thoughts.
00:54:26Marty, Chris, and Ashley scramble to identify the location
00:54:30for a new, sturdier cabin.
00:54:34One's right over here.
00:54:36We've pointed out that their cabin doesn't have the best foundation
00:54:40and that we would help them build a foundation
00:54:44that would be solid, it would be permanent,
00:54:47to withstand the extreme weather.
00:54:49We're trying to stay conscious of how far the water and electricity were.
00:54:53On this homestead, we started out looking for water
00:54:57and we didn't know that the weather would completely shut down on us.
00:55:02Do you have a tape on you?
00:55:04Okay.
00:55:05What would be wrong with...
00:55:08There's 16 right there.
00:55:13I've been on many a homestead where the cabin was 16 by 16.
00:55:18Or, what do you say we try to push it to something like 16 by 40.
00:55:24Wow.
00:55:25This would open up a lot of possibilities.
00:55:27There's just something about this already existing area that's staring me in the face.
00:55:31To provide a head start on a future cabin,
00:55:36Marty plans to leave the Currys with a finished foundation.
00:55:40First, he'll grade a 16 by 40 foot footprint,
00:55:44making sure to stay close to the planned waterline.
00:55:47Next, he'll stack cinder blocks in all corners and load-bearing points,
00:55:52creating a solid framework for a future home the Currys can complete.
00:55:57We could use a septic.
00:56:00We still have the view.
00:56:02It's already flat.
00:56:03It's compacted.
00:56:05That's all good when you're talking about a foundation.
00:56:08However, I feel like we're going to let you down a little bit
00:56:10because of the weather setback and such.
00:56:13You haven't let us down.
00:56:14Well...
00:56:15Even if nothing happened from this moment forward,
00:56:17you have put us years ahead.
00:56:20We're going to get as much done as we possibly can.
00:56:22The last 36 hours kind of put a real damper on our timeline.
00:56:28Our biggest concern is how long it's going to take
00:56:30for us to frame up the foundation itself.
00:56:32But we're ready to work,
00:56:34and I've got the faith that either way of where it's left,
00:56:37we're going to figure something out.
00:56:39This is your new foundation.
00:56:41We promised them a better future,
00:56:44but I'm not sure what we're going to leave them with.
00:56:47One more miracle.
00:56:48One more miracle.
00:56:48So check this out.
00:56:57Now that we've rescued all the bird livestock,
00:57:00we're going to help Misty out,
00:57:02we're going to help your mom out,
00:57:04and we are going to build a greenhouse.
00:57:07Excited.
00:57:08I want to be able to have our own produce
00:57:10and be able to live off the land, you know?
00:57:13Next step.
00:57:13I'm happy that we are going to have some food
00:57:18and be able to sustain ourselves that way.
00:57:20I've wanted a greenhouse since we got here
00:57:22and be able to grow food, make dinner for our family,
00:57:25and that's been one of our goals.
00:57:28So I think it'll be definitely really cool to have that here.
00:57:32Matt will take over Misty's build
00:57:34to construct his first-ever greenhouse.
00:57:36First, he'll measure a 10 by 12 footprint south-facing
00:57:41for optimal sun exposure.
00:57:43Next, he'll use milled cedar from the property
00:57:46for the posts and frame
00:57:47before enclosing it with clear roofing
00:57:49and side panels to ensure sun warm.
00:57:52Finally, he'll add raised beds using donated topsoil
00:57:56and produce to provide food security for years to come.
00:58:02With the quail coop, we started from the roof down,
00:58:05but now that we're building the structure from scratch,
00:58:09we're starting from the ground up,
00:58:11and we're going to square it up right.
00:58:12I've been working alongside with Malachi and Balin,
00:58:15and it's been a lot of work.
00:58:17Start with you.
00:58:18Right there.
00:58:18I just...
00:58:19Right there.
00:58:20Just pound one in.
00:58:23Perfect.
00:58:24But they're also vested into this lifestyle,
00:58:27and that's what this homestead needs.
00:58:29You got these young men
00:58:30that are getting close to becoming adults,
00:58:34and they have dreams, they have goals,
00:58:36and getting to know them really shows me
00:58:39just how much they care about this homestead.
00:58:41Okay.
00:58:42Just kind of eyeball, put that stick right there.
00:58:45That's good.
00:58:46All right.
00:58:47Hammer, hammer, hammer.
00:58:47It's snowing outside,
00:58:49but I'm excited to get working with Matt on the greenhouse.
00:58:54The weather doesn't discourage me.
00:58:56Let's talk about getting some building materials
00:58:58right off of your property, all right?
00:59:01All right.
00:59:01Follow me.
00:59:04Where's the chainsaw?
00:59:11Okay.
00:59:12A couple inches of snow on the ground.
00:59:14Let's see how the babies are doing.
00:59:15Over in the new barn...
00:59:17Hi, guys!
00:59:20Misty checks on the goats
00:59:21to see how they weathered the storm
00:59:23in the new structure.
00:59:25Those little guys in the back are so pumped.
00:59:27They're just warm.
00:59:29They're alive.
00:59:30They're tucked in.
00:59:31We kind of built this pen within a pen.
00:59:34We got the heat lamp on the four-day-old kids,
00:59:36and we just went with what we had,
00:59:38but we weathered the storm.
00:59:39Everybody's fine,
00:59:40and now it's time once and for all
00:59:42to finish this build.
00:59:45Hello.
00:59:46Yo!
00:59:47Come on in.
00:59:49So, a few things have changed in here.
00:59:53We created this little milking station
00:59:55that you can fold down.
00:59:58It's good to hear that Malachi and Valen
01:00:00have such an active role in the homestead
01:00:02with the livestock,
01:00:02and hearing things like milking these goats
01:00:05out in the rain, in the mud,
01:00:07they're managing livestock in less-than-ideal situations,
01:00:10and just changing that and setting them up
01:00:12so their day-to-day is that much easier
01:00:15is my ultimate goal here.
01:00:17What I like about it is you just grab your little stool,
01:00:20you milk your goat,
01:00:21and we got you a little present.
01:00:25That amazing, simple pulse,
01:00:27two goats at a time, milk her,
01:00:29that is going to take you to the next level.
01:00:31That's incredible.
01:00:32To have a dry, clean space
01:00:36and do two at a time,
01:00:38it's remarkable, Misty.
01:00:40Thank goodness we had gotten the barn finished enough
01:00:43to be able to bring the mamas and the babies in
01:00:46and having a separate, safe, warm place
01:00:49for them to go,
01:00:50that is just a dream come true in itself.
01:01:10Ready?
01:01:11Only 12 hours remain
01:01:13to rescue the Curry family's 40-acre homestead.
01:01:17Quick, quick, quick!
01:01:18And while the crew installs the culvert
01:01:21to be used as a well casing,
01:01:23on the other side of the property,
01:01:27freshly cut cedar trees are being milled.
01:01:31Okay, you ready to pull?
01:01:33Lift it.
01:01:33Grab on that thing.
01:01:35Lift.
01:01:35Which Matt and the kids
01:01:37will use to build the new greenhouse.
01:01:39So this is the difference
01:01:41between level and plum.
01:01:43Level has to do with anything that's horizontal.
01:01:46Plum has to do with vertical.
01:01:48So that right there,
01:01:50that would be plum.
01:01:52I'm a little nervous.
01:01:53We're kind of stepping on Misty's turf,
01:01:55building the greenhouse without her.
01:01:57But Misty's all in on the goat barn.
01:02:00But we're leaving this homestead
01:02:01at the end of the day,
01:02:03and we have to build the entire greenhouse,
01:02:06but we also need to get
01:02:07a viable source of water up and running.
01:02:10And so hopefully,
01:02:12we're going to do Misty's greenhouse justice.
01:02:15Okay, this one floats.
01:02:18So I'm going to hold it up.
01:02:23We should be able to get this greenhouse up and running
01:02:26for the warmer months.
01:02:29Being able to grow our own food,
01:02:32it's definitely a blessing.
01:02:34It'll be like,
01:02:35as soon as you walk in,
01:02:36all the walls will be surrounded
01:02:38by garden boxes.
01:02:40Nice.
01:02:42A greenhouse doesn't work without topsoil,
01:02:44and we're lucky to have this generous donation.
01:02:48Even in colder weather,
01:02:50topsoil can add nutrients to plants,
01:02:52prevent erosion,
01:02:54and add proper drainage.
01:02:56So what we're doing today
01:02:57will ensure a healthier garden down the road.
01:03:02This is going to work really well.
01:03:05Woo!
01:03:08Okay, the plot.
01:03:09Dickens.
01:03:10We got a 600-foot water line
01:03:12all the way to the spring,
01:03:16buried.
01:03:17Of course, it's got
01:03:18five inches of snow on it,
01:03:20but where are we taking this water to?
01:03:23It doesn't feel right
01:03:25to run it straight
01:03:26to that building
01:03:27built on pallets.
01:03:29Good thing we have a plan.
01:03:33We're going to take
01:03:34a 1,000-gallon brand-new water tank.
01:03:38That's a real big tank, babe.
01:03:39Very big tank.
01:03:40That's a big tank.
01:03:41We'll keep digging the trench
01:03:43close to the house.
01:03:44Chris, other side will push.
01:03:46Ready?
01:03:47Easy now, precious cargo.
01:03:49Eventually, they'll hook that water line
01:03:51into the tank
01:03:52with potential
01:03:53to introduce that water
01:03:54into maybe
01:03:56a new cabin
01:03:57or house
01:03:57in the future.
01:03:58Okay.
01:03:59Not having to haul water
01:04:00and spend
01:04:01countless hours
01:04:03throughout the week
01:04:03and plan our life
01:04:04around having to
01:04:05leave the property,
01:04:06wait for it to fill up,
01:04:08come back,
01:04:08wonder if the roads
01:04:09are going to be safe.
01:04:11I mean,
01:04:11it's just life-changing.
01:04:20What's up, dude?
01:04:22Ooh.
01:04:22Oh!
01:04:23Okay, guys.
01:04:25Wow.
01:04:26Ooh.
01:04:26We've got some plants.
01:04:28The craziest thing
01:04:30in the world
01:04:30is building a greenhouse
01:04:31during a winter storm,
01:04:34and that's exactly
01:04:36what we did.
01:04:37Let's get this broccoli.
01:04:39Here, bring that in.
01:04:40Right now,
01:04:41it's 10 degrees outside.
01:04:43Nothing's going to survive,
01:04:44but we have topsoil
01:04:46in our raised beds.
01:04:48I think a little demonstration
01:04:49about how we can plant stuff
01:04:51in the greenhouse
01:04:52is very important
01:04:54for when they do actually
01:04:56plant these plants
01:04:57in the future,
01:04:58which is going to be
01:04:58when it's warm enough.
01:05:00The thing I know about broccoli
01:05:02is it might look small
01:05:03right now,
01:05:04but it's going to get real big,
01:05:06so the spacing
01:05:07on this plant
01:05:09is crucial.
01:05:12We're pretty excited.
01:05:14Yeah, now that we have water,
01:05:15we'll actually be able
01:05:17to have a greenhouse,
01:05:18and it'll really change
01:05:19everything around here.
01:05:21We're going to have plants
01:05:22every 18 inches
01:05:23when we go here,
01:05:25when we go here,
01:05:26when we go here.
01:05:27The rainies have helped
01:05:28my family a lot
01:05:29with the homestead.
01:05:31I'm just very,
01:05:32very grateful
01:05:32that they've been able
01:05:34to come here
01:05:34and help us
01:05:35in all the ways
01:05:36that they have.
01:05:37It changed our lives
01:05:38for the better.
01:05:39It's up to you boys
01:05:40to plant these plants
01:05:41in here, okay?
01:05:43And I know
01:05:44you're going to do it.
01:05:45And so,
01:05:46I say we move
01:05:46all these plants inside
01:05:48and then check the coops.
01:05:50All right.
01:05:51Let's go.
01:05:54I don't know about you,
01:05:55but these quails
01:05:56seem real happy.
01:05:57Definitely.
01:05:58We've given all the birds
01:05:59the best chance
01:06:00of survival
01:06:00from the cold,
01:06:01from the rain,
01:06:02from the snow.
01:06:03I'm glad we were able
01:06:05to do all your livestock
01:06:07birds justice
01:06:08and give them
01:06:09a really nice space.
01:06:11Seven days ago,
01:06:13the Curry Homestead
01:06:14had nothing
01:06:15but a barren plot
01:06:16of land
01:06:16for a future garden
01:06:17and a decrepit quail coop
01:06:20exposing the animals
01:06:21to deadly weather conditions.
01:06:24Today,
01:06:25their quail coop
01:06:26has been rehabilitated
01:06:27with a brand new roof
01:06:29and upcycled nesting boxes,
01:06:31ensuring their birds
01:06:33will thrive
01:06:34in any weather.
01:06:35And,
01:06:36they have a brand new
01:06:3710 by 12 foot greenhouse
01:06:39built from milled cedar trees,
01:06:42enabling them
01:06:43to grow food
01:06:44for years to come.
01:06:46I'm so thankful
01:06:47that Matt came here
01:06:49and helped us.
01:06:51A lot of stress
01:06:52have been taking off
01:06:53our parents.
01:06:54Congratulations on
01:06:55happy and safe livestock
01:06:57and hopefully this made
01:06:59your guys' livestock journey
01:07:01from here on
01:07:02a lot easier.
01:07:09This is a family affair
01:07:11right now.
01:07:12Later that day,
01:07:13by the new goat bar,
01:07:14how do we wrangle
01:07:16the buck?
01:07:17Misty enlists the Curry's
01:07:18help to wrangle
01:07:19and separate
01:07:20Freddy the buck
01:07:21from the rest of the does.
01:07:23My idea is to open up
01:07:25our electric fence
01:07:26over there
01:07:27and lead him through
01:07:28with food.
01:07:30Okay, we got the leash,
01:07:31we got the feed,
01:07:32we got the goat experts
01:07:33right here.
01:07:34I'll follow you guys.
01:07:35We're going this way?
01:07:36Yep.
01:07:36Here we go.
01:07:37Okay.
01:07:37Do you see him?
01:07:40Right now we're gathering
01:07:41all the goats,
01:07:42we're moving them
01:07:43in the barn,
01:07:44but they have to be
01:07:45separated so that
01:07:46buck has to move today.
01:07:48Come on, Freddy.
01:07:49And we have to put an end
01:07:51to this breeding program
01:07:52because clearly having kids
01:07:54in the dead of wintertime
01:07:55is not great.
01:07:57Keep coming.
01:07:57Shake your bucket.
01:07:58It's okay if any does follow
01:07:59because they'll be easier
01:08:00to get out.
01:08:01Shake it.
01:08:01Come on.
01:08:03Go.
01:08:04Go.
01:08:05Go.
01:08:05It's okay.
01:08:06It's okay.
01:08:06Just take him.
01:08:07Stop going for the girl.
01:08:08Take him.
01:08:12Freddy's the troublemaker.
01:08:13He's relentless,
01:08:14but this is just
01:08:16a little bit harder
01:08:17than I thought it'd be.
01:08:18Skin lock.
01:08:19Here, give him the feed.
01:08:20Give him the feed.
01:08:21The chaos of the buck
01:08:22stops here.
01:08:31Freddy's gotta go.
01:08:32Come on, buddy.
01:08:34Come on.
01:08:35Good job.
01:08:36Keep going, Bailey.
01:08:37Out front, bud.
01:08:38Out front.
01:08:39Yeah.
01:08:41Yahoo!
01:08:42Got it.
01:08:43Okay, guys,
01:08:44I've turned the fence on.
01:08:44Don't touch the wire.
01:08:48It's official.
01:08:49The buck is no longer
01:08:50with the does.
01:08:51You guys have a
01:08:52controlled breeding program
01:08:53just with the separation,
01:08:55and that's super exciting.
01:08:57So, yay!
01:08:57Good job, everybody!
01:08:59Yay!
01:09:02All right,
01:09:03should we go inside?
01:09:04Yeah.
01:09:05You had a lot of needs
01:09:06when it came to the goats,
01:09:09but I feel like
01:09:10we tackled it all
01:09:11with one structure.
01:09:13Yeah, we'll just be
01:09:13figuring out a space
01:09:14that's dry
01:09:15to put a big old bale of hay,
01:09:17and we'll be set.
01:09:17Yeah.
01:09:19This dream
01:09:20that we had
01:09:21really felt like
01:09:23it was starting
01:09:23to crash and burn,
01:09:24but the rainies
01:09:25made us realize
01:09:26how miracles happen
01:09:28whenever our family
01:09:29has really come together
01:09:31to work hard
01:09:32and see what
01:09:33this day can give us.
01:09:35Now,
01:09:36we've gotten
01:09:36so much accomplished,
01:09:38and we've opened up
01:09:40so many possibilities
01:09:41for us to thrive,
01:09:43and I'm just so thankful
01:09:45and excited to see
01:09:46what this next year
01:09:47holds for us.
01:09:49One week ago,
01:09:50the Currys had no way
01:09:52to properly separate
01:09:53the goats,
01:09:54causing excessive breeding
01:09:56and rampant loss of life
01:09:57during cold temperatures.
01:10:00Today,
01:10:01they have a brand-new goat barn
01:10:02built from cedar trees
01:10:04milled on the property,
01:10:06individual stalls
01:10:07to separate the buck
01:10:08from the does,
01:10:09electric heaters,
01:10:11and a new milking station,
01:10:13all enclosed
01:10:14within a new electric fence line,
01:10:16allowing the goats
01:10:17to thrive
01:10:18in the winter months.
01:10:20When it comes to
01:10:21buttoning up a few things
01:10:22or dialing this
01:10:24to your needs
01:10:24and how you farm
01:10:26and how you raise livestock,
01:10:27I'm going to leave you to it
01:10:28because I'm pretty impressed
01:10:30with how quickly you learn,
01:10:31and you're going to be fine.
01:10:32You got it.
01:10:33You're welcome.
01:10:39Look a little different
01:10:40over here?
01:10:41A whole lot different.
01:10:43Unfortunately,
01:10:44we're leaving,
01:10:45and even though
01:10:46this polar vortex
01:10:47did slow the work down,
01:10:50I will say this.
01:10:51We did our best.
01:10:53I think you're right.
01:10:55So right now,
01:10:56if you look down there...
01:10:58No, there's definitely
01:10:58water down there.
01:10:59Okay.
01:11:00So this is a 36-inch culvert,
01:11:04and this culvert
01:11:05will hold
01:11:06over 50 gallons per foot.
01:11:09So right now,
01:11:10this second,
01:11:12if you need
01:11:12400 gallons of water,
01:11:15it's right there
01:11:15ready to be pumped.
01:11:17I mean,
01:11:17this is going to be...
01:11:18It's a life-changer.
01:11:19Well, on that note,
01:11:21we've got to see
01:11:22if this water
01:11:22is actually going to work
01:11:23before I drive out of here.
01:11:25Follow me.
01:11:25Let's do it.
01:11:26Come on, come on.
01:11:28Let's turn it on.
01:11:29I can hear it.
01:11:31Really?
01:11:33Okay, there you go.
01:11:34Oh, yeah.
01:11:36Water is life.
01:11:39It is to these homesteaders
01:11:40after hauling it
01:11:41for four years
01:11:42and 5,000 gallons a day
01:11:45should breathe new life
01:11:47into this homestead dream.
01:11:48Seven days ago,
01:11:51the Currys relied on rain
01:11:53and hauling water
01:11:54from town
01:11:55as their permanent sources
01:11:56of water
01:11:57contained within
01:11:58unsanitary,
01:12:00algae-filled storage.
01:12:02Today,
01:12:03they have a developed spring
01:12:05complete with a culvert
01:12:07well casing
01:12:07and enough water line
01:12:09to run into
01:12:10any structure
01:12:11on the property,
01:12:12giving them
01:12:12and all future
01:12:14family residents
01:12:15enough potable water
01:12:16for years to come.
01:12:19As you can see,
01:12:20you got all the water
01:12:21in the world.
01:12:22For now,
01:12:23that's what you're looking at.
01:12:25Looks pretty good to me.
01:12:26Yeah, looks pretty good.
01:12:28The rainies coming out
01:12:29has really inspired me
01:12:31and made me think about
01:12:32family and homesteading
01:12:34differently.
01:12:35You know,
01:12:35the fear still comes up,
01:12:37but I feel motivated
01:12:39to face those fears.
01:12:40And soon here in the future,
01:12:42we were going to be growing
01:12:43as a family
01:12:43and as homesteaders.
01:12:46Did your wife say
01:12:47the number one issue
01:12:48here was water?
01:12:50No.
01:12:50Do you think we've
01:12:51maybe solved the problem?
01:12:53Question accomplished.
01:12:54Okay.
01:12:54If that's true,
01:12:55I'll go shut it off
01:12:56and I'll meet you
01:12:57at the truck.
01:12:58Sounds good.
01:12:59We showed up here
01:13:00in Arkansas
01:13:01about a week ago,
01:13:0235, 40 degrees.
01:13:04Perfect.
01:13:05But that ended.
01:13:06Temperatures of below zero
01:13:08nearly shut this homestead down,
01:13:10but we persevered
01:13:12and I want to believe
01:13:13that we actually
01:13:14help these homesteaders
01:13:16when it comes to
01:13:16finding water
01:13:17and to growing food
01:13:19in the future.
01:13:20But I think we've failed them
01:13:22when it comes to shelter.
01:13:25It's not a good feeling.
01:13:28All right, fam.
01:13:29I'm standing on
01:13:31Miracle Mountain
01:13:33and thank goodness
01:13:34there's water
01:13:35about 600 feet that way
01:13:37and I think all the water
01:13:39you're ever going to need.
01:13:40Right now,
01:13:42it's warm in the barn
01:13:43and as far as the goats
01:13:44are concerned,
01:13:45food shelter, water's there
01:13:47and now,
01:13:48after this week,
01:13:48you're set up.
01:13:49I really underestimated Arkansas.
01:13:52It never really fazed you though.
01:13:54You were just the whole time
01:13:55right there,
01:13:56ready to work,
01:13:57happy.
01:13:58The week was pretty fun
01:14:00but intense.
01:14:02It was definitely very fun
01:14:03being able to build with Matt,
01:14:05being able to take care of the quail
01:14:06and build a greenhouse.
01:14:08I'm very excited about it,
01:14:10being able to grow my own food.
01:14:12It was a good week.
01:14:13The weather could have been better
01:14:14but you have just made it easier
01:14:16for the future
01:14:18so we really appreciate
01:14:19everything you've done for us.
01:14:20Well, thanks for working
01:14:22alongside of us
01:14:23but I feel
01:14:26like we let you down
01:14:27a little bit.
01:14:28Weather would not allow us
01:14:30to do the things
01:14:31that we promised.
01:14:33There's a big pile
01:14:34of concrete block there
01:14:35to put in a foundation
01:14:36for a home.
01:14:38Sorry,
01:14:38it's not good enough
01:14:39for me.
01:14:40We are scheduled to go
01:14:44to another homestead.
01:14:45They're waiting on us
01:14:46right now
01:14:47so we'll see
01:14:48what we can do
01:14:49but no promises.
01:14:52Here's the cold,
01:14:54hard facts.
01:14:56It's over.
01:14:57We're leaving.
01:14:58Be safe, guys.
01:15:00Could we ever
01:15:01break away
01:15:02from the homestead schedule
01:15:03and get back here
01:15:05and finish what we said
01:15:07we were going to do?
01:15:09Guess what?
01:15:11We're working on
01:15:12Miracle Mountain.
01:15:20We are going to build
01:15:22a concrete block foundation
01:15:24but how can we do that
01:15:26in one day?
01:15:27I have no idea.
01:15:28That's how.
01:15:33Oh my gosh.
01:15:36Can't dribble on this ground.
01:15:39Better make it.
01:15:40Hey!
01:15:42While I'm watching
01:15:43Baylen play basketball
01:15:44on this muddy ground
01:15:46and shoot hoops
01:15:47at a broken
01:15:48basketball backboard,
01:15:50I'm wondering
01:15:51if there's anything
01:15:52we can do
01:15:53to help that young man.
01:15:55Family!
01:15:56After seeing
01:15:57how important basketball
01:15:58is to this family,
01:16:00we're building
01:16:00the basketball court.
01:16:02You're welcome.
01:16:03All right, right here!
01:16:04Let's go!
01:16:06Homesteading
01:16:06isn't just about
01:16:08hard work.
01:16:09We need mud.
01:16:10Shovel, shovel.
01:16:11Every once in a while,
01:16:12you gotta do something
01:16:13fun
01:16:14because embracing
01:16:16this lifestyle
01:16:17means nothing
01:16:18if homesteaders
01:16:19limit their dreams.
01:16:21Look at that thing
01:16:22of beauty.
01:16:23Now these boys
01:16:24and their love
01:16:25for basketball
01:16:26can fly
01:16:27on this homestead.
01:16:28Hope your family
01:16:29enjoys that.
01:16:31Hello, hello again.
01:16:47So, since the rainies
01:16:49have left,
01:16:50the weather's definitely
01:16:50been a lot better.
01:16:52We've definitely
01:16:52been busy.
01:16:53Overall, it's been
01:16:54really exciting.
01:16:55The well hasn't run out
01:16:57at all.
01:16:58It's just so much water.
01:16:59It's been really nice
01:17:00not having to haul water
01:17:01and plan our lives
01:17:03around that.
01:17:06The barn's been great.
01:17:07It's kept all the
01:17:07babies warm.
01:17:09She's about to have
01:17:11her babies for you.
01:17:12And we had another.
01:17:15I had triplets.
01:17:17And then we've also
01:17:17got exciting things
01:17:19with the greenhouse.
01:17:20Everything is
01:17:20perking up in there.
01:17:22So we have so many
01:17:23plants that Chris
01:17:25built this beautiful
01:17:27herb box
01:17:28so we can transplant
01:17:30some of these herbs
01:17:31and have more room
01:17:33for the veggies.
01:17:35A homestead is
01:17:36the gift that keeps
01:17:37on giving.
01:17:38There's always something
01:17:39for you to do.
01:17:40And not knowing
01:17:41if the rainies are
01:17:42coming back,
01:17:43the anticipation
01:17:43is just killing me.
01:17:45Having a reliable
01:17:46foundation to eventually
01:17:48build a new house
01:17:49still is on my mind.
01:17:52We're hoping for the best.
01:17:53And right now,
01:17:54we have the energy,
01:17:56the confidence
01:17:57to keep going.
01:17:58is that them?
01:18:22we're back.
01:18:29Welcome back.
01:18:30Long time,
01:18:31no tea.
01:18:32Yeah.
01:18:33A little bit better
01:18:33weather this time.
01:18:34Oh my gosh.
01:18:35Oh my goodness.
01:18:36We were here
01:18:37it was below zero.
01:18:38Yeah.
01:18:39Good to see you.
01:18:41How's it going?
01:18:42Bye.
01:18:42Before we left,
01:18:44we lost valuable time
01:18:46to help these homesteaders
01:18:47with proper shelter.
01:18:49Now we're back here again
01:18:50because we have
01:18:52unfinished business here.
01:18:54Let's just cut
01:18:55right to the chase.
01:18:56That's not enough block
01:18:58for a foundation.
01:18:59And so we have
01:19:00the rest of the materials
01:19:01at the top of the hill.
01:19:02We only have one day
01:19:03so we probably
01:19:04should get to work.
01:19:05Yeah.
01:19:06Let's go.
01:19:06Let's do it.
01:19:11I don't know
01:19:12how much
01:19:12in the course
01:19:13of just one day
01:19:14what can get accomplished
01:19:15but no matter
01:19:16what gets done
01:19:17it's going to be amazing
01:19:19and improve our lives
01:19:20so we're going to get
01:19:21as much done
01:19:22as we can.
01:19:23All right.
01:19:23So here's what I'm thinking.
01:19:25We are going to build
01:19:27a concrete block foundation
01:19:29but I want to take it
01:19:31to the next step.
01:19:32What's the next step
01:19:34after you
01:19:35put a foundation in?
01:19:36Framing?
01:19:37Do something
01:19:37on that foundation?
01:19:39Yeah.
01:19:39But I mean
01:19:40how can we do that
01:19:41in one day?
01:19:41I have no idea.
01:19:43That's how.
01:19:52Oh my gosh.
01:19:53Oh my gosh.
01:19:55Woohoo!
01:19:56Woohoo!
01:19:58Woohoo!
01:19:59Oh my gosh.
01:20:00These are friends of ours
01:20:02and now they're friends
01:20:03of yours.
01:20:05Thank you doesn't say it.
01:20:07Thank you so much.
01:20:10We just got a house.
01:20:11We just got a new house.
01:20:13It feels like a new beginning
01:20:14for the family.
01:20:15It's so hard to process.
01:20:20After meeting you guys
01:20:21and hearing how you built
01:20:23that home
01:20:24we reached out
01:20:25to some friends of ours
01:20:26and we said
01:20:26hey
01:20:27how would you guys
01:20:28feel about helping us
01:20:29not only
01:20:30give these guys
01:20:31a solid foundation
01:20:32but taking it
01:20:34to the next step.
01:20:35Thank you for
01:20:36helping us have
01:20:38security now.
01:20:39We have an actual
01:20:40stable home.
01:20:42Well it's
01:20:42better quality
01:20:43than housing standards.
01:20:45Is this thing
01:20:46going to sit on pallets?
01:20:47Ah heavens no.
01:20:48No.
01:20:49When they told us
01:20:50you had a pallet house
01:20:51I was like
01:20:51oh dear Jesus
01:20:52we better get down there quick.
01:20:53Should we figure out
01:20:56where it goes?
01:20:57Get the thing
01:20:57off the trailer?
01:20:58Yeah.
01:20:59Okay.
01:21:01Coming down
01:21:02coming down.
01:21:06That was amazing.
01:21:08This beautiful family
01:21:09they're confident
01:21:10they're hard working
01:21:11and they picked up
01:21:13where we left off.
01:21:15I think if there was
01:21:16ever a homesteading
01:21:18family that deserved it
01:21:20it's these guys.
01:21:22Grab the saw
01:21:23make sure we got
01:21:24gas and oil.
01:21:29One of the biggest
01:21:29challenges on this
01:21:30property is building
01:21:32the foundation on
01:21:33pallets and
01:21:34you know we've
01:21:35struggled out here
01:21:36and I was fearful
01:21:37to ask for help
01:21:38but being vulnerable
01:21:40it kind of does
01:21:41empty you out.
01:21:43Let's get the house
01:21:44going.
01:21:44With this new house
01:21:45we can continue
01:21:46to survive
01:21:47and we're one step
01:21:48closer for our
01:21:49multi-generational
01:21:50homestead.
01:21:51it's right in our
01:21:51grass.
01:21:54We made it!
01:21:56Let's put block
01:21:57on you and shim it.
01:21:59Do you need help?
01:21:59Nah.
01:22:00I got it.
01:22:02The house
01:22:02means a lot to us.
01:22:04It's definitely
01:22:04life changing
01:22:05that we have a good
01:22:07house that's not
01:22:08on pallets.
01:22:08I thought we were
01:22:10just going to be
01:22:10putting down
01:22:11some cinder blocks
01:22:12and building a
01:22:13foundation or
01:22:14something.
01:22:15So it's definitely
01:22:16amazing and I'm
01:22:18ready to get to
01:22:19work.
01:22:20Oh wow.
01:22:21Guys, it's big.
01:22:26Welcome home.
01:22:27The way we built
01:22:28our original home
01:22:30there was a deadline
01:22:31of when we would
01:22:32have to have
01:22:33something else
01:22:33and I really
01:22:34hope after the
01:22:35boys saw this
01:22:36gift today
01:22:38they never
01:22:39forget to
01:22:40dream big.
01:22:41Now we can
01:22:42continue dreaming
01:22:43and can continue
01:22:44working hard to
01:22:45make this homestead
01:22:46work.
01:22:47We can't thank
01:22:47you guys enough.
01:22:48Well I think you
01:22:49deserve it and we
01:22:50love you guys.
01:22:51We love you guys
01:22:52too.
01:22:52Group hug.
01:22:53Come on.
01:22:54Group hug.
01:22:54Yeah, group hug.
01:22:56These guys believe
01:22:58that things that
01:22:59have happened out
01:23:00here for them
01:23:01have been miracles
01:23:02and I don't blame
01:23:04them.
01:23:04They didn't have
01:23:05hope for this
01:23:06homestead.
01:23:07You guys are
01:23:07always welcome.
01:23:09Love y'all.
01:23:09Thank you for
01:23:10having us.
01:23:10Thank you so much.
01:23:13Our mission was
01:23:13to get this family
01:23:15one step closer to
01:23:17fulfilling this
01:23:18homestead dream.
01:23:19Thanks again.
01:23:21I'd say together
01:23:22we made this all
01:23:23happen through
01:23:24hard work.
