Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones says the government is taking steps in the Budget to help people "in the short term with the cost of living", while bringing "stability in the economy" in the long term. 00:00We recognise the cost of living is still a challenge for many families across the country.

00:03There are certain signs of improvement on wage growth, on inflation coming down,

00:08but we know food inflation is still a bit too high, for example.

00:11And that's why we're going to be taking measures to try to help people in the short term with cost of living.

00:15Some of the things we've already announced, for example, a freeze on rail fares,

00:19a continuation of the cap on bus fares, funded childcare, school-based nurseries,

00:23you know, these types of interventions.

00:25We'll see what the Chancellor announces later for other short-term measures.

00:28But in the long term, we need to make sure that we have stability in the economy,

00:33we have a grip of public finances so that we can get inflation down,

00:36wages rising so that in the long term people feel more secure and better off.
