00:00For me and for millions of others, the story of Peter
00:30is one of the most moving in the Gospels, because Peter was rash, and he's sometimes very slow to understand, fearful, imperfect, in other words, a human being, just like the rest of us.
00:43And Jesus chose him to carry on his ministry, not in spite of, but because of his humanity.
00:53We've done our best to tell the story of this man who was a fisherman, a humble fisherman, who was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven, St. Peter.
01:03His name was Simon, or Shimon, which means, he who heard the word of God.
01:10His brother's name was Andrew.
01:17He was a simple fisherman, a working man.
01:23The work was hard, and the times were harder.
01:30But there was one voice that stood out.
01:36Galileans, people of Galilee, listen to me.
01:43We are all so quick to see the fault in others.
01:49We open our eyes, we see, we understand quickly, because we are looking from afar, not within.
02:12Not within.
02:13No, not within.
02:18That is never comfortable.
02:21But listen, the next time you find fault with your wife, or your brother, or your neighbor, or even your enemy, look within before you speak.
02:39Look within.
02:42And you will find the purest expression of the fault you see in the other.
02:51Yes.
02:52Yes, you will.
02:55This is true.
03:00This is true.
03:27Will you get out of our boat now?
03:34Put down into the deep water, and lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
03:42Just get out of our boat.
03:43We've been out all night and caught nothing.
03:45It's too late now.
03:46Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
03:49I tell you, there are fish there.
03:56I'm going to be in the sea.
03:57Put down in the sea.
03:58I just want to win.
04:07I'm going to get out of my net.
04:12I'm going to get out of my net.
04:13I'm going to get out of my net.
04:15I'm going to get out of my net.
04:17It's not possible.
04:42Follow me.
04:44And I'll make you fishers of men.
04:47I'll make you fishers of men.
05:17I'll make you fishers of men.
05:46I'll make you fishers of men.
05:47I'll make you fishers of men.
05:48I'll make you fishers of men.
05:49I'll make you fishers of men.
05:51I'll make you fishers of men.
05:52I'll make you fishers of men.
05:54I'll make you fishers of men.
05:55I'll make you fishers of men.
05:56I'll make you fishers of men.
05:57I'll make you fishers of men.
05:59I'll make you fishers of men.
06:00I'll make you fishers of men.
06:02Sister, how can I help you?
06:15Yes.
06:16Hey, that's the way.
06:18That's the way.
06:32What is this life we're leading now?
06:50I don't know.
06:52I don't understand half the things he says.
06:57Neither do I.
06:59How can anyone forgive the whole world?
07:02How can anyone forgive someone who's wronged you?
07:09I don't know, but he can.
07:16That woman who sped on him, the woman who sped on me,
07:21he forgave her over and over.
07:23But that's him.
07:25He's not like other men.
07:30Do you think he comes from God?
07:32What do you think?
07:40Do you think he's the messiah?
07:48I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:53It changed my life to follow him.
07:55When someone is hungry, he feeds them.
08:09When someone is alone, he comforts them.
08:14And when someone is sick, he heals them.
08:17But when I speak to him, he answers.
08:25He answers.
08:29Yes.
08:32That's something new in this life.
08:36Yes.
08:38It is.
08:39You were taught well by your father.
08:55My father never leaves me.
08:57I knew your father.
08:59May he rest in peace.
09:01My father is in all things and all people.
09:04He is eternal.
09:05Be very, very careful what you say, Nazarene.
09:13They honor me with their mouths.
09:16But their hearts are worlds away.
09:20And they worship me in vain by teaching their own human inventions.
09:24As my doctrines.
09:26Isaiah.
09:27Yes.
09:28And his prophecy has come to pass with your generation of hypocrites.
09:36You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.
09:40The very people who are trying to enter.
09:43You trudge to the back of beyond looking for a single man to convert.
09:47And the moment you succeed,
09:49you start making him twice as much a child of hell as you are.
09:54It's not wise to keep company of this man.
10:01He is not your messiah.
10:10Master, you think that this was wise?
10:14They took offense at your words.
10:15And well, they should.
10:17They are blind.
10:19If the blind lead the blind,
10:21they all fall into a pit.
10:23But what does that mean?
10:26What does all of it mean, Master?
10:28We don't understand.
10:29I think you do understand.
10:30But you deny that you do.
10:32Because you are afraid.
10:41There was Andrew.
10:42Thomas.
10:43Thomas.
10:44Thomas.
10:48Bartholomew.
10:51Mary of Magdala.
10:55And Mary, the mother of Jesus.
11:00Judas Iscariot.
11:02And Simon Peter.
11:03They, along with the others,
11:06were the ones who remained.
11:08The disciples who became the apostles.
11:13The ones who would spread the word
11:15as far and as wide as they could.
11:17Master, what do we do now?
11:36Because now the Pharisees will suspect us
11:40and watch us.
11:42They'll watch everything we do.
11:44Won't that harm our mission?
11:47Your mission?
11:48Is it our mission?
11:49I don't know.
11:51My dear one,
11:52I chose you.
11:56All of you.
11:58Each and every one of you.
12:01And that includes
12:02the one who will betray me.
12:04And the one who will deny me.
12:07Near the hour of my death.
12:14Your death?
12:17Yes.
12:18My death.
12:18But after three days,
12:22I will rise again.
12:27How can you say these things?
12:31How do you even dare
12:32to speak of your own death?
12:35Betray you?
12:38Deny you?
12:39Out of my sight, Satan!
12:40You're speaking in the tongues of men!
12:43I'm speaking the words of God.
12:48This is too much.
12:52I've had enough.
12:54I've had enough!
12:55I've had enough!
12:55I've had enough!
13:17Simon.
13:17Simon.
13:19There are things
13:20that you will only understand
13:22after I've risen from the dead.
13:25Master.
13:30I was born a fisherman.
13:34It's hard work,
13:35but
13:35it's a decent living.
13:40I could go back to that life.
13:44But you revealed so much to me.
13:46some of it
13:48I've understood.
13:50A lot of it, I...
13:52I know no scripture.
13:57I work with my hands.
14:00I'm a much simpler man
14:01than you think I am.
14:02Simon.
14:05I'm giving you a new name.
14:08Peter.
14:09Why?
14:12What for?
14:14Because you will be my rock.
14:17The rock
14:18on which the church
14:20will be built.
14:23The faith.
14:28I'll give you the keys
14:30to heaven's kingdom.
14:31I'm a...
14:31Me?
14:41Why me?
14:46I don't understand.
14:49I...
14:50I don't understand.
14:53I don't understand.
15:06I...
15:09I...
15:10I...
15:11I...
15:13ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
15:43Master, what are you doing?
15:52I'm going to wash your feet.
15:54No, you will never wash my feet.
15:56I told you.
15:57There are things you can't understand now.
16:00But you will understand them later.
16:13You call me Master, don't you?
16:17Yes.
16:19So the Master is washing the pupils' feet.
16:23This is what we will do for each other.
16:27As I am doing for you,
16:30you will do for one another.
16:33For all others.
16:34If you understand this now,
16:39any of you,
16:41then you are blessed.
16:44But I don't expect that you will.
16:53Tonight,
16:54one of you will betray me.
16:57And after they've taken me,
17:00one of you will deny me.
17:06Me?
17:11No.
17:12Never.
17:14Three times.
17:16Before the cock crows.
17:17This is the way of man,
17:23my beloved Peter.
17:24Peter.
17:24No.
17:50No.
17:50No.
17:50No.
17:51No.
17:52No.
17:53No.
17:54No!
17:55No, no, don't do it.
17:56Don't do it.
17:57No.
17:58Don't do it.
18:24No!
18:26No!
18:27No!
18:28No!
18:29No!
18:30No!
18:31No!
18:54No!
19:18Jesus!
19:20Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
19:50Aren't you a follower of Jesus to Galilean?
19:57Don't know what you're talking about.
20:05Wasn't that man with Jesus over Nazareth?
20:07That's what I thought.
20:08I never met the man.
20:09You're one of his followers.
20:11I know you are.
20:12You have a Galilean accent just like him.
20:14Listen to me.
20:15I've never once stayed nice on this man.
20:18Leave me alone.
20:20I know you are.
20:50I know you are.
21:50Hey, brothers!
21:57Who is that?
21:59I don't know.
22:01I've never seen him.
22:05Did you catch anything?
22:08No, nothing!
22:12Lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
22:15It's too late!
22:22Lower your nets from the right side of the boat!
22:26I tell you, there are fish!
22:31Just to humor him.
22:32Move! Move!
22:34Move!
22:44Move!
22:44Move!
22:45Go!
22:47Move!
22:48Move!
22:49Move!
22:50Move!
22:51Move!
22:52Move!
22:53Move!
22:54You could have some magnets all day now!
22:56Move!
22:57Move!
22:58Move!
22:59Move!
23:00Move!
23:01Move!
23:02Master, it's you.
23:28Peter, do you love me?
23:32Master, I betrayed you as I said you would.
23:41I'm so ashamed.
23:44But I told you that you would.
23:47Your shame is no concern of mine.
23:51Master, I...
23:56Do you love me?
24:01Master, you have to know that I love you.
24:04Feed my sheep.
24:07But, Master, I...
24:08Feed my lands.
24:10Shepherd my sheep.
24:12Feed my sheep.
24:14Yes.
24:15Yes, I will, Master.
24:17And remember this.
24:18When you are old, you won't be able to do as you did when you were young.
24:25Yes, yes, I know that.
24:27Listen to me.
24:29You'll have to stretch out your arms for someone else to dress you.
24:34And take you where you don't want to go.
24:47I knew it was the Lord.
24:49I've made breakfast for all of you.
24:55And your nets will hold.
24:58Yes, yes.
24:59Yes!
25:01We'll hold.
25:02Oh, my God.
25:32Brother, I'm just a poor fisherman.
25:42He was, he is the son of God.
25:46You are the rock.
25:51And he taught all of us to follow him by his example.
25:54But you understood him far better than I did.
25:58Perhaps, perhaps not.
26:02Understanding comes for every person in their own time.
26:07Yes, but you did not deny him.
26:12You stood by him when he was put to death.
26:17I denied him.
26:19And what did you see in yourself when you did what he knew you would do?
26:22My shame.
26:32And, and what, brother?
26:39My soul.
26:41He lit a flame within you, brother Peter.
26:44Now you have to light the flame in others.
26:48All of you?
27:17I want you to listen to me carefully now.
27:24As I speak of a man, a prophet, Jesus of Nazareth.
27:31He was given to you by God and made known to you with the signs and wonders that God worked through him.
27:39And this man, Jesus, who they allowed to be crucified, he allowed it.
27:45And then God, his father, raised him up and released him from death.
27:51I see the Lord before me, said David.
27:56He's always at my right hand.
27:58David lived and he died.
28:01He's buried in his tomb.
28:02But David knew that God would send the Messiah and God would lift him away from death.
28:07God has made this man both Lord and Messiah.
28:11This Jesus, whom they crucified.
28:14I knew this man.
28:20I love this man.
28:23He was, he is the Messiah of love and constant forgiveness.
28:29Forgiveness, forgiveness to all before you, friends and enemies.
28:37Because how else are we to break free from vengeance?
28:39So I say to you, repent, repent, and be baptized.
29:09I baptize you in the name of Jesus.
29:23I baptize you in the name of Jesus.
29:35Peter and the other apostles were called before the Sanhedrin.
29:39The Jewish legislative body made up of Pharisees and Sadducees.
29:45They would question about preaching and healing a lame beggar in the name of Jesus.
29:50You're questioning us about a good deed done to a crippled man.
29:56You demand to know how he was saved, by what power.
30:01So here's your answer.
30:03It was in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and who God raised from the dead.
30:12There is no other way to salvation.
30:15And there is no other name under heaven given to anyone in the human race by which we can all be saved.
30:20Whatever judgment you hand down, whatever instructions or prohibitions we may receive,
30:26these matters are of no consequence to us.
30:30We will never stop speaking of Jesus of Nazareth.
30:34Of what he said and what he did.
30:36We will never stop preaching in his name and we will never stop shouting his name
30:40from the roofs of every house and from the tops of every mountain.
30:44I am the one.
30:48I am the one who was cured by this man.
30:52Many of you in this room know me.
30:54You know what I was.
30:56And you can see now what I am.
31:04Great is the power of the Lord.
31:10They were forbidden from preaching in the name of Jesus.
31:17They were taken to be flogged.
31:19But there was no denying that the Christians, as they would later be known,
31:28were a new and lasting spirit in the world.
31:41Peter took to the road to evangelize.
31:44His task was to go to the nations and convert the pagans,
31:49the ones who believed in the old gods.
31:52Peter traveled through Syracuse and Sicily,
31:55to Calabria on the mainland,
31:57and up through the Bay of Naples,
31:59and from there to the Appian Way, which led to Rome.
32:02And the ones who lived there,
32:03and he would also have to go where they were ao rozarkan
32:05for the earth.
32:07So it's a great time to bring my hand.
32:50Babylon.
32:57Shortly after Peter's arrival, a massive fire broke out in Rome.
33:02It devastated the city and destroyed four of its 14 neighborhoods.
33:06It was rumored that the Emperor Nero himself had ordered the fire to clear out areas for construction of a new palace complex.
33:46The words of Satan!
33:49But how are we teaching kindness in others?
33:52We're comforting those who need our comfort.
33:54We're feeding those who need our bread and bringing water to those who are thirsty.
33:58Whether they thank us or not is a matter for men.
34:02It has nothing to do with God.
34:05Yes, master.
34:06No.
34:08There's only one who deserves to be called master.
34:10According to the historian Tacitus, who was in Rome during the fire, Nero used the Christians as scapegoats.
34:35He rounded up their leaders and sentenced them to die on the cross.
34:51Their wives.
34:56Come on.
34:56Come on.
35:07Come on.
35:10Come on.
35:11Come on.
35:11Come on.
35:13Peter followed the way of his master
35:26from beginning to end
35:28spreading his faith
35:31and speaking his word
35:32but he asked that his cross
35:36be fashioned differently
35:37because he felt that
35:40he wasn't worthy
35:41to die as Jesus had died
36:11blessed are the pure in heart
36:34Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount
36:37for they will see God
36:38and he might have been speaking of this man
36:41to whom he entrusted everything
36:43Jesus told Peter
36:46you'll deny me
36:47not because he wanted Peter to resist
36:50or to test him
36:51instead he gave Peter a way
36:53of seeing himself fully and clearly
36:55and from there
36:57a pathway within
36:59to real change
37:01and that was the gift
37:04that Jesus gave to Peter
37:06and to the world
37:07Peter was fascinating to me
37:20because he was always a guy
37:21who was struggling to understand
37:22and the fact that he was always described
37:25as being a hot-headed guy
37:26so my interest is
37:29Jesus choosing Peter
37:31because of the flaws
37:33and the fallibility
37:35Jesus is obviously
37:37a good judge of character
37:38I think he chooses Peter
37:40for his strengths
37:40and his weaknesses
37:41first of all
37:42he's a fisherman
37:42so he knows how to bait a hook
37:44he knows how to catch things
37:46he knows how to be patient
37:47so all these qualities
37:48that make a good fisherman
37:49but he also knows his weaknesses
37:50as we know
37:51and I think to be a leader
37:53of the community
37:54you have to know
37:54your weaknesses
37:55because you have to remember
37:56your reliance on God
37:57and I think that made him
37:58the perfect disciple in a sense
38:01Richard Rohr
38:02the spiritual writer
38:03said that Peter comes to Jesus
38:05not by doing right
38:07but by doing wrong
38:08which I think is really beautiful
38:09my old New Testament professor
38:11Dan Harrington
38:12used to say
38:12that the name Peter
38:14Rock
38:15might have been
38:15a little bit of a nickname
38:17and a little bit of a play
38:18in his character
38:18so it's not beyond Jesus
38:20to use that kind of two ways
38:22you're the rock
38:23in which I'll build my church
38:24but you're also
38:24kind of a tough guy
38:26you're kind of hard-headed Rocky
38:27God's ways are not our ways
38:29the person who doesn't have
38:30the appearance
38:31of a true believer
38:32has it at his core
38:34and that's Peter right
38:36if there's a point to it
38:37it's to remind us
38:38to try to judge character
38:40not by our usual criteria
38:41who's the best behaved
38:43the most reliable
38:44what's the greatest commandment
38:46you know
38:46to love
38:47and the idea
38:49that you're changed
38:50by feeling
38:51that through suffering
38:52and through emotional experience
38:56you transform
38:58the thing I love about him
39:00is how he's always saying
39:02I don't get it
39:03you think about somebody
39:04who's super emotional
39:05it's a volatile way to live
39:07because you're yanked around
39:08by how you feel
39:10he must have been terrified
39:12I mean it's one thing
39:13to be like with Jesus there
39:15and another thing to see him
39:16being led away
39:17and knowing he's going
39:19to Golgotha
39:20you just have the feeling
39:21that after that face-to-face
39:24and that level of repentance
39:26and forgiveness
39:27in the living moment
39:28he became willing to go
39:30to his death
39:30he wouldn't have denied him
39:32yeah that's the real mystery
39:33and strength of Christianity
39:35it's what happened
39:36between that moment
39:38and going on the road
39:40and taking it out
39:41it has to have been
39:41the resurrection
39:42a lot of people say
39:43well it was the disciples
39:44kind of remembering him
39:45you don't go and put your head
39:47on the block for remembering
39:48Peter who was ready
39:49to go back to his old job
39:51right so
39:52yeah
39:52I'm going to quit
39:52I'm out
39:53yeah so he needed
39:54something dramatic
39:55and I think all the disciples
39:56did to show
39:57this is real
39:58the resurrection is real
39:59and it needs to have been
40:00physical, visual
40:02something that's unmistakable
40:03and then he's changed
40:05my favorite sequence
40:06where he dives
40:08into the blue water
40:09and then he's face-to-face
40:10with him
40:11he's in that state
40:12of profound repentance
40:14Jesus offers him
40:15forgiveness three times
40:16to ask him three times
40:17do you love me
40:18to counterbalance
40:19Peter's denial
40:20three times
40:21right
40:21but he also doesn't say
40:22do you apologize
40:24right
40:24it's all love
40:25you know the way
40:26you characterize it
40:27he denied Jesus
40:28in the strongest possible terms
40:29as they say in the newspapers
40:30he could have kept denying
40:32I didn't really mean it
40:33I was under a lot of pressure
40:34I didn't want to die too
40:36but he doesn't go there
40:37he owns it
40:38and that straightforwardness
40:40makes it possible
40:41for him to receive that love
40:42and the risen Christ
40:43offers him not revenge
40:45he offers him love
40:46and peace
40:47and forgiveness
40:47and reconciliation
40:48I think this episode
40:50gets us back
40:51to the beginnings
40:52of Christianity
40:53where we can see
40:54how strange it was
40:55how reckless it was
40:56to commit to this
40:57and that's what I took away
40:59from the final image
41:00the resurrection
41:01or Jesus himself
41:02turned Peter's life
41:04upside down
41:04we can see that
41:05and feel that
41:06and it was so luminous
41:08I found it very moving
41:10that final image
41:11in one of the chapels
41:12in Vatican City
41:14where the Pope prays
41:15right after he's been
41:15named Pope
41:16is a Michelangelo
41:17image of that
41:18and it's Peter upside down
41:19and Peter's staring out
41:21at you
41:21and they often say
41:23when the Pope sees that
41:25it's a reminder
41:25of who came first
41:27and what was sacrificed
41:29in the past
41:31in the past
41:32and he was
41:33and he was
41:35and he was
41:35and he was
41:36and he was
41:37andΰΈ·ented
41:38and he was
41:38and Broken
41:39and he was
41:40and he
41:42then blocked
41:42and he at Compass
