00:06A federal jury in California ruled Friday that Apple owes Massimo $634 million

00:14for infringing a blood oxygen monitoring patent behind those little glowing sensors on your wrist.

00:20According to Reuters, the jury decided that the Apple Watch's workout mode and heart rate notification

00:26features crossed the line into Massimo territory.

00:29Massimo called the decision a significant win and said it protects innovations that benefit patients.

00:36Massimo basically said,

00:38we invented the laser finger thing and we'd like to keep credit for the laser finger thing.

00:43Apple, unsurprisingly, disagreed and loudly.

00:47A spokesperson called the verdict contrary to the facts and promised a swift appeal.

00:53Apple also noted that Massimo doesn't sell consumer gadgets,

00:58has sued Apple repeatedly over the past six years, and that the patent expired in 2022.

01:11The long-running feud revolves around pulse oximetry, the optical sensor method that measures blood oxygen levels.

01:18Massimo claims Apple poached key employees and built watch features on top of stolen expertise.

01:25Federal regulators have previously sided with Massimo.

01:29The U.S. International Trade Commission banned imports of Apple Watches with blood oxygen features in 2023,

01:37which is why recent Apple Watches mysteriously forgot how to measure oxygen.

01:43Apple's workaround?

01:44A re-engineered watch offloads blood oxygen calculations to the iPhone, neatly tiptoeing around the ban.

01:52Massimo is suing U.S. Customs for letting the updated watches into the country,

01:58while Apple keeps trying to get the ban overturned.
