00:00Trump, New York City Mayor-Elect Mamdani Strike Conciliatory Tone in Oval Office Meeting
00:05President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-Elect Zoran Mamdani met at the White House on Friday,
00:12a high-profile introduction between two leaders who campaigned from opposite ends of the political spectrum
00:18but signaled they are prepared to work together.
00:21According to Fox News, it was the first time Trump met Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist,
00:26whom his administration has publicly labeled a Communist.
00:30Even so, both men said they found common ground.
00:34We have one thing in common, Trump said as the media entered the Oval Office.
00:39Trump said their conversations centered on affordability issues in New York City,
00:43naming housing, food, and consumer prices as areas where their agendas overlap.
00:48The pair held a private meeting before taking questions from reporters.
00:52I will say there's no difference in party. There's no difference in anything, Trump said.
00:57Ahead of the meeting, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt referred to Mamdani as a communist,
01:02while emphasizing that Trump is willing to meet with any American leader regardless of ideology.
01:08During the press availability, Mamdani stood beside Trump and said their discussions focused on lifting New Yorkers
01:15What I really appreciate about the president is that the meeting that we had focused not on places of disagreement,
01:26which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers, Mamdani said.
01:32He added that both men spoke about improving the lives of the 8.5 million residents currently struggling under a cost-of-living crisis with one in four living in poverty.
01:44Mamdani was asked if he still thinks Trump is a fascist.
01:48However, Trump cut in, saying,
01:49That's okay. You can just say yes.
01:52It's easier than explaining it.
01:54Later calling Mamdani a rational person who wants New York to be great again and claiming the city has declined.
02:01Mamdani has faced anti-Semitism accusations,
02:04ended the event by pledging to prioritize Jewish public safety,
02:08saying he is committed to rooting out anti-Semitism across all five boroughs.
02:12He won the November 4th election over Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
