00:00Trump threatens New York City.
00:03President Donald Trump recently declared that he could unilaterally withhold federal funding from New York City
00:08if Democrat Zoran Mamdani, a promising frontrunner, is elected mayor.
00:14News.com has learned that the president called the candidate a communist
00:17and claimed that the White House controls the flow of money to the city.
00:21Speaking during a cabinet Q&A alongside the president of Argentina,
00:25whom Trump is endorsing and offering a $20 billion bailout,
00:28he launched into an extended tirade about Mamdani and crime in major cities.
00:34We have a communist who's 33 years old, doesn't know a thing.
00:37Practically, he's never worked a day in his life.
00:40And he sort of caught on, right?
00:41And I'm not going to send a lot of money to New York. I don't have to, Trump said.
00:45Trump also claimed his administration had already improved crime rates in several cities,
00:50asserting that he could clean up New York within a month if given authority.
00:54It took 12 days to do Washington, D.C., so New York is bigger.
00:59And Chicago, we've already made a lot of progress despite fighting from the local government.
01:03But Chicago is doing great, he said.
01:06Trump added that cities like Memphis had shown great support for his anti-crime initiatives.
01:11Within a month, we'll have that into a safe city again, he said,
01:15pledging to continue targeting what he described as lawless areas.
01:19Turning his focus back to Mamdani, Trump accused the mayoral hopeful of being anti-police and anti-Semitic.
01:26He's a communist. He hates police. He wants to get rid of all police.
01:31He hates Jewish people. And yet, he's got Jewish people supporting him, Trump said.
01:36The president repeated that the funding for New York and for every place comes through the White House,
01:41suggesting he could personally decide whether the city receives money.
01:45Trump's comments came after weeks of partial government shutdowns
01:48and federal funding freezes targeting Democratic-led cities.
01:52His administration has withheld $28 billion so far,
01:56although some funds for police and counterterrorism in New York were restored recently,
02:00after pressure from Republicans.
02:01Under the U.S. Constitution, only Congress has the authority to allocate federal spending,
02:07but executive agencies play a key role in how those funds are distributed.
02:11While Trump's claim that he could unilaterally block money to New York is not legally supported,
02:16it reflects his continued use of fiscal threats against political opponents.
