00:00Her wing is bent up, if you can't tell right there, and she can't fly.
00:05So we're going to try surgery on her wing.
00:13Skylar and her husband BJ didn't plan on becoming surgeons.
00:17They were just trying to raise some butterflies.
00:19In the town I lived in where everybody was getting the butterfly raising,
00:21and I was one of those. And so we started because of my daughter,
00:25and now it's not for my daughter, it's 100% for me, for sure.
00:28But nature can be brutal.
00:31Oh, see dad, she doesn't want to die.
00:35A high percentage of butterflies don't make it from chrysalis to freedom.
00:39So when this one hatched, Skylar could see immediately it was bad news.
00:44See her wing?
00:45Her wing was bent. And usually that's game over. But Skylar had a wild idea.
00:51When we saw that one was injured, you know, I looked into it,
00:54and I saw somebody had done a butterfly surgery before with a wing from another one.
00:57They had a wing from one that had passed away naturally.
01:00Now they just needed a surgeon.
01:03Enter Skylar's husband BJ.
01:05It's not very easy to talk a finished carpenter into performing butterfly surgery and doing it well.
01:10It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.
01:17They say they can't feel pain, so don't be scared.
01:23I was very, very nervous that it wouldn't work or that she would flinch or something.
01:27But I feel like as, like, the seconds went on, it was just going really, really well.
01:33It works!
01:35Eee!
01:37Stop!
01:39You just ate the butterfly, Dad!
01:41But now the next challenge.
01:43Could she fly?
01:45Sugar water. Dad, look at her flapping!
01:47Hopefully she'll eat some of that and get her energy back.
02:03Go, girl.
02:05You gotta do something. Come on.
02:07Come on!
02:07See? You're fixed!
02:12At first, it didn't look like she could fly.
02:23But then...
02:25Come on, girl.
02:28I'm gonna shake her.
02:35Eee!
02:36Your wings are flabbing!
02:38Ah!
02:39He's coming, Dad!
02:40Eee!
02:42Go, girl!
02:43Oh, my God. Stop.
02:46Dad, look.
02:47You saved her life for real.
02:50And this butterfly didn't just survive.
02:53She got straight to work.
02:55The littlest things, I swear, matter, you know?
02:58And they only live for two weeks.
03:01You saw in the video, she literally laid eggs on the leaf.
03:04So, obviously, it was for a reason.
03:05It's just so important for the world to always try to help the things that can't help themselves.
03:10Because you
03:15What I hear from?
03:17Hold on.
03:18Don't.
03:19Hus membranes.
03:20Yeah.
03:21Huh.
03:21Did you?
03:22What else?
