00:00I was looking over my shoulder. I just see a big dark blob coming pretty quickly from below right
00:05at me. I've been fishing and spearfishing pretty much my entire life. We're out hunting yellowtail
00:10not too long after we kicked out there. We all separated. We all kind of wanted to go our own
00:14way and look for fish. I always just keep my head on a swivel, look over my shoulder, make sure
00:18I'm
00:19aware of my surroundings. I just see a big dark blob and the first thing that was a distinguishing
00:24trademark of a big shark was just like a big grin that you can see from the row of teeth
00:28coming at
00:29you. I was like, okay, it's game time. I squared off with it, kept my eyes on it and the
00:35cool part
00:35about it was is once it got up to me, it was not afraid of me at all. It did
00:39almost a full 360 around
00:41me getting closer and closer to the point where I can see all the details of all the scars that
00:46it
00:46had on its body. I can see its eye looking at me. So one of the things you want to
00:51do is when you're
00:52squaring off with an apex predator is you want to let it know that you see it and square your
00:57body
00:57off with it. She kept coming closer and closer to me. I had to dive down on her to show
01:01her that,
01:02you know, I was the apex predator until she pushed off and then sank down. People seem to really
01:06identify with the story and like to see that sharks aren't these crazy apex predators that
01:11everyone's afraid of in the ocean. They're just another living being. They're trying to coexist with
01:15us. Because I was grateful that I was able to see it, I don't want to be around when I
01:19can't see it.
