00:00Fittest family, it's the first of our quarterfinals here at the legendary Hell and Back and the competition is really heating up.
00:07Tonight it's Davie Fitz and the Smiths, Andrew Trimble and the McKennas, Michael Dara with the Burns, each of them battling it out for a place in the semifinals.
00:16But tonight, one of them will lose a family. Let the games begin.
00:22Come on, come on!
00:24Let's go, go, go, go!
00:25You're there, you've only another few years to go.
00:31Come on!
00:32Two minutes, let's go, let's go!
00:34Come on, lift her up!
00:36Grit your teeth!
00:37Welcome to our first quarterfinal in the infamous bog of Hell and Back.
00:59With lots of muck, sweat and tears ahead, it's time to raise the stakes yet again.
01:05So let's find out who's got some skin in the game tonight.
01:09But first, let's take a quick look back on how we got here.
01:13Over an intense three weeks of heats, 12 families became nine as three families crashed out of the competition.
01:20Get up!
01:20Some coaches were luckier than others.
01:23Yes!
01:24I'm absolutely buzzing.
01:25And some were fighting to stay in the game.
01:27You can't afford a mistake and I'm having too many at the moment.
01:31Michael Dara won and a nil.
01:34That kills me to say it.
01:36Over the next three weeks, we will see our coaches and families take part in some of the most competitive and intense events this competition has ever seen.
01:45Come on, dig in!
01:46Next week in our second quarterfinal, it's Dunica's Linehan's versus Michael Dara's Walsh's versus Andrew's Hilliard's.
01:56That's it, Mikey. You catch him. You catch him.
01:58Ten seconds and you're done, Ava. Work!
01:59Our third and last quarterfinal will be Anna's Cars versus Davies McDonough's versus Ellen Stewart's.
02:08That's you!
02:09Under, under, under!
02:11But it's this week's quarterfinal that we're here to see.
02:14All our quarterfinalist families will be hoping to get a place in our semifinals in our brand new location, Drogheda Port.
02:30But only one family will make it to the final, get to the top of those ramps and win the title of Ireland's fittest family 2025.
02:38Andrew, Michael Dara, Davie. Here we go again.
02:44Davie, I hate to point out the obvious, but you are probably the most senior member of coaches right now.
02:49How are you feeling?
02:50What I'm thinking is I'm the oldest in here by a long shot, right?
02:53And I'm not as mobile as the two boys. That's what I'm thinking.
02:55And so they probably have that advantage on me, but like, I think this year is different.
03:00What if we, we have three teams racing against each other.
03:03I'm kind of looking forward to the carnage of what's going to happen.
03:06And looking forward to seeing how the boys, they're so relaxed and chilled out now.
03:09I have a feeling that's not going to be the way.
03:12For you, like, how are you feeling? What's your tactic going into it?
03:15Yeah, here we are. The famous bog from the telly.
03:18The tactics, like, the kind of your cardio and strength, like the boys, the burns are strong.
03:23They are strong. They're all buff lads.
03:24But I was like, this is all about heart. It's all about just grinding it out.
03:27The bog is an experience, right?
03:30And this is your first time going up against the legend that is Davie Fitz.
03:34So how does that feel?
03:36Yeah, I mean, like I thought I would suffer out of her depth in terms of experience.
03:40This lad here is a wily old veteran when it comes to the bog.
03:42So a bit of preparation, but just trying not to overthink it as well.
03:46You know, like, bring the goggles, bring the armbands.
03:49Let's see how we get on. Worst case scenario, just get them across the finish line.
03:53You really have no idea what's coming, do you?
03:55Well, lads, may the mud be with you.
03:58I'll see you all back here at the finish line. Best of luck.
04:02Here's how the quarterfinals work.
04:05Tonight, our families will take on Battle of the Bog and then the cruel Valley of Pain.
04:09They'll be awarded three points for first place, two points for second place and one point for third.
04:15The points are added together and the top family qualifies for the semifinals.
04:20The bottom two families will have to face it off in the eliminator to see who else gets a semifinal place.
04:25Nothing says family bonding like dragging your loved one through a disgusting bog.
04:35And this is the only race where you're pretty much guaranteed to lose a shoe and your dignity.
04:39This is Battle of the Bog.
04:41This is a three-family relay race where two members of each family start Battle of the Bog with a cold, watery cargo net crawl, followed by an A-frame climb.
04:52From here, the family pairs must work together as they begin to navigate the muddy bog.
04:57A series of under and over logs of different heights and sizes await before plunging back into the deepest, muddiest, longest and most draining part of the course.
05:05Next, they have to climb the ladder before sprinting to the finish line.
05:09When the family pair are standing on the pallet, the next two from the family can start the race following the same route.
05:15The clock only stops when all four family members are standing on the pallet.
05:21Any concerns? No. The bog is nervous to meet the burns. Never mind. Not the other way around.
05:25I'll keep going because I have to face them three lads if I don't.
05:29I think the nerves have kind of gone out the window. Now it's more kind of confident and excited and ready to get the job done.
05:35We're going to give it a go.
05:37Caelan and Cormac will do the damage and the girls will bring it home.
05:40We like mucking. We're used to that. We all grew up in doing that there.
05:43So hopefully we can push through it and get through.
05:48Ready to go in purple are Cathy and Sean Smith.
05:51In pink, Paul and Anne Byrne.
05:53And in red, Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
05:56Three, two, one.
06:02Referee Paula Donovan gets us underway.
06:04This is battle of the bog.
06:06There's an early lead for the McKenna boys.
06:09Followed by the burns wearing pink.
06:12The Smith family in purple.
06:14So this is one of these A frames.
06:16Up they go. Soaking wet already.
06:19And out front, Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
06:21They've made a very quick start.
06:22Andrew Trimble will be delighted.
06:26So you get a perfect idea of just how tricky the terrain is here.
06:30But this is easy compared to what's coming later.
06:33But Cormac and Caelan McKenna are making this look straightforward.
06:36It's anything but.
06:37The remaining members of the family waiting back at the start line.
06:42Andrew is very calm.
06:44Now it starts to get really muddy and sludgy.
06:49TV Fitz can't believe it.
06:51I'll tell you what.
06:52The McKenna's have started very well.
06:54But the Byrne family and the Smith family are a bit stuck.
06:58It's understandable.
06:59Last bit.
06:59Last bit.
07:00So they are very nearly at the finish line.
07:04Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
07:06Get yourself up first.
07:07Michael Darrell and McCauley working closely with the Byrne family.
07:10So that is impressive.
07:12They have a sprint down to the finishing talent.
07:15Cormac and Caelan are there.
07:17And off go Sharon and Colleen McKenna.
07:19They said beforehand that they like the muck.
07:26The Smith family and the Byrne family are not liking this one bit.
07:29Keep moving.
07:30I'll have a look.
07:30I'll have a look at it.
07:32So that's Colleen McKenna.
07:34Moving well.
07:37So Anne Byrne with her son Paul.
07:45That's mum Sharon McKenna.
07:47There's three mammies in this race.
07:49There's Cathy Smith.
07:53That's Sean with her.
07:56There's a bit of a traffic jam here.
07:59But there's no issues at all for the McKenna family.
08:01They are flying.
08:03Sharon McKenna picking a line.
08:04She's happy with it.
08:05Now she's gone past Paul and Anne Byrne.
08:07Lapping the Byrne family.
08:08Can she lap the Smith family as well?
08:13So Davey's staying calm at the moment.
08:15Yeah, nice one.
08:16With the Smith family.
08:17And Sharon McKenna just getting stronger and stronger.
08:21Her daughter Colleen is ahead of her.
08:23Her two sons are up at the finishing pallet.
08:24But this is really hard for the Byrnes.
08:26For Paul and Anne.
08:30So Michael Dara and McCauley will be important here.
08:33For the Byrne family.
08:34So that's a familiar sight, isn't it?
08:38We see people being dragged along the top of the bog.
08:41That was Cathy Smith.
08:42Or that is Cathy Smith with her son, Sean.
08:47Give her a hand.
08:47Give her a hand.
08:48Give her a hand.
08:48Are you going over until you get her up?
08:49So Anne wants to try and get her up.
08:51It's easier said than done.
08:53Colleen McKenna has gone past the Smith family.
08:56And her mum, Sharon, about to do exactly the same.
08:59So the McKenna's have left both families now in this race.
09:04Just slowing down a little bit for Sharon.
09:06Colleen is just ahead of her.
09:07This is the toughest part of the course.
09:09Every inch of it, every centimetre of it is tough.
09:14Andrew Trimble, very, very impressed with what he's seen.
09:17But it's a huge battle.
09:19It's a grind for the other families.
09:20Anne Byrne has Paul just ahead of her.
09:26She just won't give up, though.
09:28She is not giving up.
09:31So there's the McKenna's in red.
09:33But they've lost some time.
09:34The Smith family, Cathy and Sean, have gained ground.
09:38We saw the McKenna's lap them a little while ago.
09:41But the Smiths have hit back.
09:42The McKenna's, though, still a lap ahead.
09:45Come on up again.
09:47Come on, let's go.
09:47So this is really tough for Anne and Paul Byrne.
09:51It's really tough for everybody.
09:54Cathy and Sean Smith from County Louth.
09:57There is Sharon McKenna from Monaghan.
10:01Colleen McKenna has got up that ladder.
10:03About to be joined by her mum, Sharon.
10:06But Colleen makes it to the finish line.
10:08That's an impressive performance.
10:10She's only 17 years of age.
10:11Three out of the four there.
10:12About to be joined by Sharon.
10:14But Paul and Anne Byrne are still battling away.
10:16That's a better ball, yeah.
10:17The wire on the sideline is the best.
10:19I'll go through the middle.
10:19Yeah.
10:20So here is Sharon McKenna about to finish out Battle of the Bog.
10:24This is some performance by the McKenna family.
10:27All four are up on that pallet while the other two families haven't even started their second lap.
10:32You're not going to be able to slug your way through.
10:36You're going to have to use your legs.
10:38So, well, Michael Darren Macaulay, this is his first experience of this.
10:41To see just how demanding it is.
10:45There is Sean Smith dragging mum, Cathy, along the surface of the bog.
10:49The Burns are still battling away with it.
10:51We need to get second.
10:52Come on.
10:52So, Davey wants second place.
10:54They are about to get up that ladder.
10:57Cathy and Sean Smith.
10:58So, there's Paul and Anne Byrne, and here comes Sean and Cathy Smith about to finish their first lap.
11:06The other members of their family can't see what's going on here, so they have to be told to start.
11:10And it's Mark and Adam Smith who start.
11:12You saw John Byrne in pink there.
11:14He was dying to get going.
11:15It's just a waiting game for them, but not for Adam and Mark Smith.
11:19They're underway.
11:20And this is the second lap for the Smith family.
11:22Just keep moving, keep moving.
11:23The Burns, John and Jack waiting down at the start line.
11:27They are not involved in the race yet because Paul and Anne can't get to the finish line, no matter how hard they try.
11:33That's it.
11:33Let's grind it out, grind it out.
11:35And it is a grind.
11:36It's a real, it's a war of attrition.
11:39Adam is 19, Mark is 15.
11:43They had to wait down at the start line.
11:46But they're in second place.
11:47So McKenna is waiting for the other families to finish it out.
11:56Davey said to Cathy and Sean he wanted second place.
11:59This is what they have at the moment.
12:02And the Burns are still stuck.
12:05And now Adam and Mark, well they're up very close with Paul and Anne Byrne, aren't they?
12:10And Michael Daryl McAuley wants them to pick a different line and get away from his family members.
12:17And that all is very up close and personal, isn't it?
12:20Grab the other side, come on, keep walking.
12:22I understand that Adam and Mark just want to get this done.
12:24Now they've moved away from Paul and Anne who are very definitely stuck in the bog.
12:29There's a little bit of movement there.
12:30Paul is doing everything he can.
12:32A reminder that the Burns are still on their first lap.
12:35John and Jack waiting down at the start line.
12:37But Adam and Mark, this is the second lap for the Smith family.
12:41And they're about to claim second place.
12:43Three out of the four up there.
12:45They're just waiting for Mark to join them.
12:48And it'll be second place for the Smith family from County Loud.
12:52And that is what they've claimed right now.
12:55The drama continues though for the Burns family, for Anne and Paul.
12:59The finish line is still a fair bit away.
13:02So Paul is trying absolutely anything and everything to help his mother.
13:11But you know what?
13:12She is still battling with this.
13:14She's still fighting.
13:15Push through, push through.
13:17Stand me up.
13:19Just keep moving, keep moving.
13:21Come on, Anne.
13:26That's it, that's it, Paul.
13:28Yeah, come on, get ahead, get ahead.
13:29Come on.
13:30This is the last of the slog.
13:34Yes.
13:36Okay, Jeff.
13:39Come on, you're doing great.
13:41Let's stop.
13:47Horrendous.
13:48Oh my God.
13:49I couldn't get up.
13:50Couldn't get me feet up.
13:51Couldn't pull them out.
13:52Couldn't, couldn't move.
13:54Never, ever thought it'd be that bad.
13:56Horrendous.
13:57So finally, Paul and Anne are away from that dreaded bog.
14:00They'll never want to see it again.
14:02But it's been a brilliant performance by the two of them.
14:04In particular, Anne, she got stuck there time after time.
14:07But she didn't give up.
14:08There's no other grandparents on the show that's doing what she did.
14:10And like, the grandkids will be.
14:12There's no other grandkids going to do.
14:15They'll be delighted to see their granny on there.
14:16I'll give it to Anne.
14:17I'll give it to Anne.
14:17I'll give it to Anne.
14:19Come on, Lies.
14:20Finish it out.
14:20Come on, Lies.
14:21Keep going.
14:22Finish it out.
14:22Finish it out.
14:23Finish it out.
14:23And here they come.
14:28Anne and Paul Byrne getting a great reception from the other family members who have finished
14:33this out.
14:34Anne now finished.
14:35And John and Jack Byrne can get going.
14:36Yeah, it's not in my mother's DNA.
14:45It's not in our DNA to give up.
14:46We're going to get through it no matter what.
14:53I'd say the tough part was the last bit just before the ladder to get onto the bridge.
14:57So I must have got stuck in the same spot as Anne because all of a sudden just, no, my
15:01body shut down.
15:02Like, it wasn't at me now.
15:04Yeah, just regroup.
15:05Go again.
15:06Maybe think of a different strategy for the next challenge.
15:08And as I said, we're just going until the wheels fall off.
15:11We ain't done yet.
15:14And there's the point on the board as John and Jack finish the race.
15:18Byrne family, I mean, the bog's no joke.
15:21We know that.
15:22Well done on getting through it.
15:24I know right now you probably don't feel too great because you're exhausted.
15:27No, I feel great.
15:28That was easy.
15:30It's very tough.
15:31Very tough.
15:31But I'm very proud of my mind to get through that.
15:33So no matter how tough it was, she kept going.
15:35So it was an unbelievable achievement.
15:36Like, like, if they were wearing, like, these calorie counters, I'd say they're on a million.
15:40Like, they were hacking it.
15:42Like, and again, never gave up.
15:45Like, slogged it out to the end.
15:46So it was amazing.
15:47Oh, it was very tough.
15:49It was right.
15:49It was a lot higher than I thought it would be.
15:51I actually couldn't get out of it.
15:52Only for Sean.
15:53Sean was just amazing.
15:56Really was amazing.
15:57The bog is the bog.
15:59The bog is the bog.
16:00So it suits some doesn't suit others.
16:02Second is good.
16:04McKenna.
16:04Family.
16:05It has to feel good.
16:06It does definitely feel good.
16:07Just had to power on and keep going.
16:09It went better than planned, I think.
16:11Luckily, we got away well at the start and then started to get sickier at the end.
16:16But we were both sort of knack and knack where we stayed at each other.
16:18So if we needed help, we were there for each other.
16:20So we're definitely happy with that as well.
16:23Andrew, are you so proud of your family?
16:25Oh, they did brilliant.
16:25They absolutely smashed it, yeah.
16:27Oh, McKenna's, well done.
16:29Andrew, congratulations.
16:30A flying star to the day.
16:32There's fish and then there's the McKenna's.
16:34Now let's take a look at the scoreboard.
16:38The McKenna's are in first place with three points.
16:41The Smiths are in second place with two points.
16:43And the Burns are in last place with one point.
16:49Keep it going.
16:50Go, go, go, go, go, go.
16:52Quickly, quickly, get it to the one.
17:04Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
17:18It's the first of our quarterfinals here at Hell and Back.
17:21And before the break, we saw all of our families fight their way through Battle of the Box.
17:25Andrew Trimble's McKenna's came out on top as they put in an extraordinary performance.
17:38Davey Smith's family got stuck in the mud as they came in second place.
17:41But Michael Dara's Byrne family got really stuck in the mud and came in third place.
17:52Life is full of ups and downs and it's always handy to have a little safety net.
17:55We decided to take those life lessons and turn it into an event.
17:59This is Valley of Pain.
18:03This course will open up a whole world of pain for our quarterfinalists.
18:06It's Valley of Pain.
18:09Our families start on straw bales.
18:12Then they face an exhausting run along a winding pathway.
18:15Next, it's a series of ups and downs before tackling two angled walls.
18:20One is three metres high and the next 3.6 metres high.
18:23After that, a run down to the first of two cargo nets.
18:26One they must climb over and one they have to crawl under.
18:29To finish, all four family members have to climb up to the top of the Irish table.
18:33It's 2.4 metres high.
18:35The clock stops when all four are standing behind the rope
18:38and the fastest family will score those vital three points.
18:41Since the heats, the coaches have been working with their families
18:48to get fighting fit for the quarterfinals.
18:52Michael Darragh organised a fun day out for his family, the Burns, from Dublin.
18:56The Burns family, all very strong, fit, athletic.
19:01But there's a bit of that kind of balance and coordination that might be needed.
19:07Welcome to my humble abode.
19:09He said he hasn't done it before, but he's definitely got a few secret sessions in.
19:13Lift our legs with our core, push back.
19:16Legs go to the outside.
19:18Yeah?
19:19Once they're upside down.
19:20I think my ma, again, always excels.
19:24She's obviously nervous getting started, getting going,
19:26but she knows it's a bit of fun and she jumps into it and has a good crack.
19:31Michael, I think he wants to join some circus.
19:36Yes, really good.
19:38Look, we had a great day today.
19:39Definitely learned about balance, about core.
19:42Hopefully we can take some of these learnings into the next day
19:45and blow the competition away.
19:47Michael Darragh and the Burns family, here we go.
19:53A valley of pain.
19:54I think we have it's us.
19:55We have our strengths.
19:55We know how we're going to do.
19:56We know how we're going to get up the first one.
19:58Now we're going to get up the second while.
19:59We're good to go.
20:00Anne, the knee's bandaged up.
20:02Yeah.
20:02Is it all right?
20:03Yeah, grand.
20:04Not a bother.
20:04Just a bit bruised, a bit swollen, but grand.
20:08I banged it off something.
20:10I twisted it.
20:11I don't really know.
20:13I just, it's bruised and swollen.
20:16But I'm not worried about it with my knee.
20:19I'll just do what I can.
20:21You need to be careful for it.
20:22There's actually a lot of running in this.
20:23There's a lot of climbing.
20:25So it's just, we're going to have to keep an eye on it.
20:27The docs, they were like, listen, we can call this here.
20:30You know what I mean?
20:30And then she was like, no, strap me up, throw me back in there.
20:33I'm ready to go.
20:34So yeah, she's fired up and she's going to get through it.
20:37You know, lining up for the Byrne family, Jack and Anne and John and Paul.
20:45Three, two, one.
20:47This is Valley of Pain.
20:50The Byrne family finished last in event one, the Battle of the Bog.
20:55They need a good display here to avoid the Eliminator.
21:00So it's a gentle start.
21:02Perfect, Anne.
21:03That's perfect.
21:03Keep going.
21:04I've heard that mum Anne is strapped up.
21:05Keep going.
21:05Keep going.
21:06Keep going.
21:06Just strapped up the left knee.
21:08Took a little bit of damage there.
21:09You can see that strapping.
21:10But Anne is moving well.
21:14So up and over that bank.
21:18And there is Jack Byrne.
21:19He had a go at that first wall at three meters high.
21:22They're really designed for the families to help each other.
21:26But Jack won't let this wall beat them.
21:28Wow.
21:28Just as I said, they're meant to help each other.
21:30He's done it himself.
21:31Brilliant.
21:32So they need a big performance here.
21:35Yep.
21:36Perfect.
21:36And they've got two up there.
21:37That's Paul up joining his cousin Jack.
21:39And they want Anne and John to get a move on.
21:42A minute and a half now on the clock.
21:45Here's Anne.
21:46And John is going to help her up.
21:48And the two lads will pull her to the top.
21:52She's experienced a lot of those kind of things today.
21:54But is still battling away.
21:56And still showing up for her family.
21:58Let's go.
21:58Let's go.
22:00So this wall, three meters high.
22:01The next one is a little bit higher.
22:03Shoulder.
22:03Let's go.
22:04And here it is.
22:053.6 meters high.
22:09So whatever works, they can climb up whatever way they want.
22:13So Paul is going to be lifted to the top or pushed to the top now.
22:18There he is.
22:18Perfect.
22:18Let's go.
22:19Let's go.
22:19Two and a half minutes.
22:20The Byrne family will set the target for the other two families to try and beat.
22:24As you can get full extension on this.
22:26Full extension.
22:27There you go.
22:27There you go.
22:28So there's Anne up again.
22:30The knee is holding up well.
22:31Here next to you.
22:32Jack, you're last.
22:34Yeah.
22:36So Anne is over the far side.
22:38Let's go.
22:39Let's go.
22:39Here come the other two lads.
22:41Jog over.
22:42Jog over.
22:42Just take your mind.
22:43Take your mind.
22:43Let her go.
22:44Let her go.
22:44Let her go.
22:45Let her go.
22:45So Anne heading away towards the cargo nets.
22:48Perfect.
22:48Let's go.
22:49Let's go.
22:49So they're away from those walls and the families have to climb over this cargo net.
23:00And as you can see, there's a lot of movement as the others take it on.
23:05Let's go.
23:05Let's go.
23:08Anne is very nearly at the end of that first net.
23:13And Jack is staying back to help out.
23:15Let's go.
23:15Let's go.
23:15And John and Paul going under this cargo net.
23:18It's the last little bit.
23:20Back on ground here.
23:21Let's go.
23:21Anne has got through there.
23:26So they've got to crawl under the next net.
23:27Let's go.
23:28Let's go.
23:28Let's go.
23:28Last few.
23:28Last few.
23:29And Jack is just holding that up for her to make it that little bit easier.
23:32So she's picked a line she's happy with.
23:34You can see there are ridges underneath it.
23:36Let's go.
23:38So all that's left for the Byrne family is the Irish table.
23:43That's 2.4 meters high.
23:46Lift it up.
23:47Lift it up.
23:47Lift it up.
23:48Come on, man.
23:49Go.
23:49Jack, get up.
23:49Get up.
23:50Get up.
23:50That is hard on the knees, isn't it?
23:51Crawling along underneath it.
23:54All right.
23:54Come on.
23:54You're doing it.
23:55So that's John Byrne who's very nearly made it up and he needs a bit of a hoosh.
23:58That's a technical term.
24:00But it works.
24:02So Anne and Paul together.
24:05Get up.
24:05Get up.
24:06Get up.
24:06Give me Paul.
24:07Paul.
24:07Give me a hand.
24:08Let's go.
24:08Let's go.
24:08So Paul had been told to give a bit of a hand there.
24:11Let's take a hand.
24:12Let's take a hand.
24:12So here comes Anne.
24:13What a day she's had.
24:15What a hero she's been for her family.
24:16They've gone through five minutes now.
24:20Get my hand.
24:21Get my hand behind.
24:21They all have to stand up there.
24:23They have.
24:23Clock stops at 5.16.
24:25Just how good that is.
24:26We'll find out.
24:27Sorry.
24:29Anne.
24:30What's going on, lads?
24:31There's always.
24:32There's always.
24:32Good job, Joe.
24:34Good job, Jackie.
24:35Anne, come over here beside me.
24:37Mind you, can you lean on me now for a second?
24:38Come on.
24:39You're an absolute superstar.
24:41How are you feeling?
24:42Very tired.
24:43I know.
24:44I don't blame you.
24:45It's not easy.
24:46No.
24:47No, not as delicious.
24:47Very hard.
24:48It's quite heartwarming to see your three boys, you know, the whole way through taking care
24:53of you, but especially at the end there.
24:54Yeah.
24:55They're very good.
24:56Yeah.
24:58It's amazing.
24:59Like, I mean, where would you get it?
25:00You won't see many other mammies doing this.
25:04Next up, it was Davy's turn to gather the Smiths for some serious training.
25:09I bought the Smiths here today.
25:11I wanted to put them through hell.
25:12I wanted to really test them mentally.
25:14I was going to kill Davy.
25:16I thought we were just going to come down for a little bit of a chat and that, but I didn't
25:19realise we were going to do a session.
25:20The biggest thing for me is to work as a unit.
25:24To get everybody to perform to the best of their ability is massive.
25:27Sometimes that's not always going as fast as you can go.
25:30Sometimes it's getting the best out of someone that's struggling.
25:34Yeah, I've learned a lot of how we work as a team and myself, Davy, done the hit session
25:39today to see how we work together.
25:41The beginning, we set off without mammam and we found out then, we realised then we had
25:47to drag her with us and coming to the end then, we got in 14 seconds quicker, I think
25:52it was, so we've proved that we can do it, so we just need to stick at it now.
25:56We tested them.
25:57We tested them today and I think we definitely met improvement.
26:00I thought it was a good day all around, yeah.
26:04Davy and the Smith family, here we go, Valley of Pain.
26:11Now, Davy, you have a little bit of an advantage with Valley of Pain because you've been here
26:16before, so you know the set-up.
26:17We're looking forward to this.
26:19There's a bit more than just going into a bog running on this.
26:22There will be a bit of strategy.
26:24Very important to get the walls right and how you get up and who you get up, so we've a
26:29bit of talking to do on that and see if we can get it right.
26:32You're good there, right?
26:33He'll get there from there.
26:34Look at the reach.
26:36Yeah, sorry, yeah, he would.
26:36Look at the reach.
26:37He's going to get there, right?
26:39My first reaction was, wow, high walls, cargo nets.
26:45Yeah, it's going to be a tough one for me, not for the boys.
26:48Yeah, the three of us are going to try to help Mum along the hallway and pull her along
26:51so we get the fastest time as we can.
26:52Lining up for the Smith family are Adam and Cathy, Mark and Sean.
26:59Three, two, one.
27:02Go, go, go.
27:03The Smith family from County Louth were second in event one today.
27:075.16 is the time set down by the Burns.
27:12So after finishing second in the first event, they need the fastest time here to avoid the
27:19eliminator.
27:19So Cathy been helped along by two of her sons.
27:25Come on, push her up.
27:26Up on top of the weapon.
27:27Catch his head.
27:28Let's go, let's go, let's go.
27:28So approaching half a minute, there's Cathy and this is the first of the wall, three meters high.
27:35Quickly, quickly, quickly, quickly, quickly, get into the wall.
27:39So teamwork, as we have seen, absolutely vital here.
27:44So the aim of the game is to get Cathy up to the top of the first wall.
27:51And whatever way you get up there, it doesn't matter.
27:54Stand anywhere, stand everywhere.
27:56And Cathy is now up at the top of that first wall.
27:59There's Adam Smith.
28:00He made it to the top ball and has only got a strapping on his left wrist.
28:03So they are away from, just about to be away, all four of them from the first wall.
28:11Second one is higher.
28:14So 5.16, the time to beat after the Burns family were first to go.
28:22So they were pretty slick and quick at the first wall.
28:26So Cathy is almost at the top of the second one.
28:29And she's come back down and Davey is sounding and looking very stressed.
28:35They are losing time here.
28:37They started the race so well, but this is costing them priceless seconds.
28:45So Cathy gets away from the second wall and she's up to the first of the cargo nets.
28:49That wall is 0.6 of a meter higher than the other one, but it makes all the difference, doesn't it?
29:02Or can.
29:03And it did there.
29:04And the Smith boys need to get a move on.
29:08Cathy's on the first cargo net.
29:10Crawl over this.
29:11Go, Cathy.
29:12Take it, go, Cathy.
29:13Come on.
29:14And now all four of them are there.
29:16And they need to make up some time.
29:18That was a big leap and a fall, but everything's okay.
29:23So Cathy has got a little bit stuck.
29:27That's perfectly understandable because this net is not at all stable.
29:32We've seen people try and run over it, crawl over it.
29:36Come to the second one.
29:38It really is whatever you're comfortable with.
29:40So Cathy Smith is very nearly there.
29:43They still have one more cargo net to deal with that.
29:49They have to crawl under this.
29:50And as we have seen, there are ridges.
29:52But that's good teamwork as the net is held up.
29:56Davey's not impressed at all.
29:58Just kind of punching the air.
30:02So approaching four minutes now.
30:06The Irish table is 2.4 meters high.
30:08Davey wants them to really push it now.
30:13And this, well, getting up that Irish table, it's much harder than having to climb up a wall because there's no place to put your feet.
30:20Unless you stand on somebody.
30:22Push me up, man.
30:23Really getting pushed up.
30:25Push me.
30:25So Davey doesn't look impressed at all.
30:28They're going to beat the time set down by the Byrne family.
30:31But we've still got the McKenna's left to go.
30:36And the Smith family from County Louth complete the task in four minutes and 23 seconds.
30:40They're the leaders now.
30:42Davey, that felt fast.
30:45No, it's not fast enough.
30:46We made too many mistakes.
30:47We made two mistakes out there.
30:48Can't do it.
30:49Did they give an unreal effort?
30:50They gave everything.
30:51They were absolutely brilliant.
30:52Absolutely brilliant effort-wise.
30:53But you can't make mistakes.
30:55Every day is a learning day.
30:57But not bad.
30:59They did okay.
31:00But I know we could have knocked maybe 30 seconds off that time.
31:04Cathy, it's not easy.
31:06But you didn't give up.
31:07You were ahead of the lads.
31:08You were straight down to the cargo nets.
31:09You took them on as best that you could.
31:12How are you?
31:14Battered and bruised.
31:15But it was really tough.
31:16It was tough.
31:17That net, it's very, you're very unstable on it.
31:20I'm very proud of my mum because she's obviously years ahead of us
31:24and she's still keeping up with us and planning on
31:26and trying to stick with us.
31:27So, she's the most proud of my mum.
31:29We've done it.
31:30Done the best I could.
31:31And the boys were great.
31:32Pushing me up and pulling me and dragging me.
31:36And they were brilliant.
31:37They were just, their effort was absolutely brilliant.
31:39I'm so proud of them.
31:40Can't fault the effort.
31:41Everyone gave 100% and it was brilliant, that team effort, yeah.
31:45Finally, Andrew and the McKennas made a day out of it.
31:48Yeah, I brought the McKennas down here
31:50to Monaghan Rugby Club.
31:51I wanted to introduce them to rugby.
31:53We're going to do a wee time trial.
31:55Andrew's very passionate about rugby, as you can tell.
31:58As you hit that cone, I'm going to say to you,
32:00Donika or Davie Fitz.
32:06Nice killing, very good.
32:08Mummy's tackling was a bit comical, to be honest,
32:11but she's not going to have a career in rugby anyway, so...
32:14Yeah, good stuff.
32:17Andrew's a very patient coach.
32:19He's a relaxed guy, and he brings that into us, too.
32:23We're confident in him, and I know he's confident in us.
32:26Come on, let's go, come on back.
32:28Add on.
32:28It kind of feels like they're so good.
32:30They're so strong, they're so fit.
32:32There's a bit of pace about them as well, competitive.
32:35They tick every box.
32:36McKennas on three.
32:37One, two, three.
32:38McKennas!
32:39Oh, yeah, definitely think today helped.
32:41It's a wee bit more team bonding,
32:43getting to know our coach, Andrew,
32:44and good for the family to even be spending more time together.
32:50Well, well, well, Andrew, McKennas,
32:53you must be feeling quite smug coming into Value of Pain.
32:56No, I'd say we're just going to say our very best.
32:59That's all I'd think.
32:59See, this is nice now.
33:00You sound lovely and modest.
33:02That's a good way to go about this.
33:03How are you feeling after this morning, though?
33:06Oh, we're definitely happy with how we performed in the bug,
33:08but we don't want to get big heads,
33:10and hopefully at least we'll get through this one as well
33:12without fighting the Eliminator.
33:14It's up to us just to do the event as fast as we can,
33:17but not fumble, not make any mistakes.
33:19As long as they pace themselves, they don't blow up,
33:21or they don't, you know, technically,
33:24they're able to get over the walls and up onto the platform.
33:27It's only things that, like, little things that could go wrong
33:30could hamper us at this stage.
33:31I think the pressure definitely is on
33:33because we want to get home this evening without the Eliminator.
33:37Ready to go for the McKennas are Sharon and Colleen,
33:42Cormac and Caelan.
33:44Three, two, one.
33:49Well, the question here is can the McKennas make it two wins out of two
33:52for Andrew Trimble?
33:56If they can, they would soar into the semifinals.
34:01They were brilliant in the first event.
34:02Careful on those turns, Sharon, yeah.
34:05Will they be able to back it up and win again?
34:09So that is Sharon McKenna at the back of the pack there.
34:14Two boys setting the pace.
34:16And pacing here, important.
34:18That was really quick.
34:21So let's see how they do at the first of the two walls.
34:25Yeah, there's one up there now.
34:28Yeah, Cormac, grab.
34:30But there's a clear strategy, isn't there?
34:32Right, Colleen there.
34:32Yeah, well done.
34:33And it has very nearly got them away from wall number one.
34:37So that is Sharon.
34:38Mom, Sharon, being held to the top.
34:40Yeah, well done.
34:42And there she is.
34:43So a minute and 15 seconds.
34:49Kaylon is the last to get up to the top.
34:51Same again.
34:52In position.
34:53So here they are at the second wall.
34:55It's 60 centimetres higher.
34:57Doesn't seem like a lot, but it does make a difference.
34:59Yes, well done.
35:00Good man.
35:00So they've got one up there.
35:01Andrew Trimble is just quiet encouragement from the coach.
35:05And then put your back up against it.
35:06Killing.
35:06And then getting her shoulders.
35:07Yeah, well done.
35:08Good stuff.
35:09But you can hear that strategy again.
35:11Same again, Colleen.
35:13It's all very cool and calm and collected.
35:18Yeah, one arm each, no?
35:19This feels like a well-oiled machine, doesn't it?
35:22It's really slick.
35:23So they're away from the wall.
35:25Not even two minutes done.
35:27If we had a split time from obstacle to obstacle,
35:30they would be well in front.
35:32And there's two minutes now.
35:33Oh, nice, lads.
35:34This is the cargo net over the top of it.
35:36That was some leap from Colleen.
35:38And she nearly did that in the one go.
35:41If anything, they're speeding up.
35:45So Sharon is last.
35:47Losing a tiny bit of time.
35:48But they seem to have a fair bit of time to play with.
35:52A GAA mad family.
35:56Well, all the members of their club back home in Monaghan
35:58will be very proud with the way they have performed here.
36:03Okay, so Sharon McKenna is losing a little bit of time.
36:07She's caught in that second cargo net.
36:10Yeah, nice to have you on, yeah.
36:13Let's go, Sharon.
36:14So Andrew dividing his time, kind of splitting the family up.
36:18So Sharon's still underneath that net.
36:22One out of the four up to the top of the Irish table.
36:25Look at this time.
36:26Not even three minutes.
36:26Here comes Colleen.
36:27And she's just standing on her brother.
36:30She's using her brother as a table.
36:31But there's more instructions from Andrew Trimble.
36:37So Sharon is the third of the McKenna family
36:41to approach the top of the Irish table.
36:44This has been quite a performance.
36:46They were brilliant in the first event today.
36:48And they've backed it up.
36:49They dealt with the pressure.
36:50And this is some showing.
36:52A force to be reckoned with.
36:53The McKenna family.
36:54They win.
36:55Three minutes and 20 seconds.
36:56I actually think if I blinked, I was going to miss that.
37:00You were so quick.
37:01Hopefully we were quick enough, though.
37:03Andrew, I know this is your first time
37:06experiencing Valley of Pain
37:08and Ireland's for this family in general.
37:09But you have to feel a little bit smug right now.
37:12Outreduously smug is where I'm going.
37:13I wish Donnico was here to see this, actually, as well.
37:16But yeah, they did unbelievably well.
37:18They're just class.
37:19They're just all amazing athletes.
37:21Good crack as well.
37:23They're down there.
37:24They've just got a nice approach.
37:25Even before, they're...
37:26laughing and giggling and slagging each other.
37:28So, yeah, they went really well.
37:32Over to the scoreboard.
37:33And after both events,
37:34the McKenna's remain in first place with six points.
37:37The Smiths are in second place with four points.
37:40And the Burns, they're in last place with two points.
37:43So that means the McKenna's will be going straight through to the semifinals,
37:47leaving the Smiths and the Burns to fight it out
37:50in the dreaded eliminator for this week's last place in the semifinals.
37:54You're nerdy, dear.
37:57Come on.
38:00Get up, get up.
38:01Welcome back to Ireland's fittest family.
38:18It's time for our first eliminator of the quarterfinals,
38:21where Davey Smith family are going to be taking on Michael Darragh's Burns.
38:25One family is going to edge closer to glory,
38:28and the other, well, they'll be stuck in the mud and out of the competition.
38:31So while Michael Darragh and Davey have their two families still in the competition,
38:37that's going to change very soon once Paul the Ref starts this eliminator.
38:42Tonight's eliminator is no walk in the park.
38:45It begins with a sprint to collect a 30-kilogram log,
38:49which they must run with together around the field.
38:52Then they face a relentless series of A-frames and walls.
38:55If that isn't enough, they have to navigate a tricky balance beam
38:59before the three-meter walls await.
39:01These are followed by a plunge into a freezing ice bath.
39:04Next, it's a climb up onto a platform and down a cargo net-covered ladder.
39:09Finally, the ramp awaits.
39:11The first family to the top of the ramp wins the place in next week's semifinal.
39:15The losing family is eliminated.
39:17Knowing that we've already completed an eliminator
39:22is definitely going to give us some sort of confidence boost
39:24and hopefully push us through to win it.
39:27Stand up, stand tall, stand.
39:30Down for five, four, three, four.
39:32As usual, I'm nervous going into the eliminator,
39:36but when I start, I'll just go.
39:41Look, it is long.
39:43Especially Anne's had a bit of a knock.
39:44I think we saw that earlier.
39:45I think just stick with it till the very end.
39:48I think we should be in the mix here.
39:49Let's go.
39:50Let's go.
39:51Small bit more.
39:52I'm not going to be negative about it.
39:54I'm going to be positive.
39:55We'll get through this.
39:57We'll do it.
39:57We'll smash it.
39:58Right there, right there, right there, right there.
40:00And stop.
40:01Let's stretch.
40:02I think it might come down to mommy versus mommy, yeah,
40:04but I think it's going to be battle probably
40:08right till the very end till the ramp.
40:10Photo finish.
40:11Ready to go for the Smith family in purple are Mark,
40:17Kathy, Adam and Sean.
40:19And for the Burns in pink, it's Paul, Anne, John and Jack.
40:24Three, two, one.
40:28Loads of pressure on both families here
40:30as they begin the eliminator.
40:33That log weighs 30 kilograms
40:34and the Smiths have a bit of a lead already.
40:37Just wonder how Anne Byrne is feeling.
40:39She still has that strapping on her left knee.
40:41Jogging, lads.
40:42Come on.
40:43So the Smiths opening up a lead for Davy Fitz.
40:47Paul, dropping it in the mulch.
40:48You're nearly there.
40:49Paul, dropping it in the mulch.
40:50So Davy down there waiting for them
40:52at that drop zone where they can get rid of the log.
40:55Go, go.
40:56Here they go at the walls.
40:58These are the easy ones in inverted colours.
41:00And an A-frame.
41:05Here come the Byrne family from Dublin.
41:09The Smith family from Laudita.
41:10An all-Leinster clash for a place
41:13in the semi-final of Ireland's fittest family.
41:17So it's still early on in this race.
41:19There'll be no panic from the Byrne family.
41:23So a reminder there in pink.
41:26And in purple, it's the Smith family.
41:28We saw Cathy, Mum Cathy, going over that A-frame.
41:33The balance beams are always a very testing part
41:38of these challenges.
41:41The Smith family have now two on there.
41:43You've been going at 100 miles an hour
41:45and you have to calm everything down.
41:47And every step counts.
41:49Here come the Byrne family.
41:50They're not that far behind.
41:52One, two, one, two.
41:54So Davey just counting that out with Cathy.
41:56And Cathy's come off the beams just to go back to the start.
41:59So Paul taking great care with his mum.
42:01And what a hero she's been today.
42:03So the Smith family have two away from the balance beams
42:07and they're up to this wall.
42:10Three metres high.
42:14We heard one of the Byrne family say
42:15that the Smith family are not that far ahead
42:18and they're not really.
42:20So Anne seemed to jar her knee there a little bit.
42:23That'll be a concern for her.
42:24Hold my head, hold my head.
42:26Hold my head, hold my head.
42:27So while the Smith family not doing great at that wall,
42:31the really high one,
42:32here come the Byrne family.
42:35Michael Daryl will keep them all together
42:37and keep them very much in the zone
42:39because Cathy is losing time.
42:40Cathy Smith is in trouble at that balance beam.
42:43And here come the Byrne family.
42:45All four of them there now.
42:48Wow, this is something else.
42:50And they weren't that far ahead, were they?
42:52And the Byrnes have caught right up.
42:53Remember, Michael Daryl did work on balance
42:56earlier on the competition
42:57while Anne has gone off there
42:58and she seemed to land heavily on that left leg
43:00which jarred her knee again.
43:03So she's gone back down to the start.
43:06Cathy Smith is very nearly there
43:07and she's got away now.
43:08So she's away from the balance beam
43:10and the Smiths are trying to open up a lead again.
43:14Oh, there's a fall by Cathy.
43:16She's okay.
43:18This is all a bit chaotic now.
43:20Anne is in trouble.
43:21Anne Byrne.
43:22Stand up!
43:22Get your belly up!
43:24But we know, we saw it in the VOG earlier on
43:26she would keep going
43:27until she can't move anymore.
43:29So Cathy's trying to move up to the top of that
43:32three metres high wall.
43:35Get off!
43:36And Cathy has done that
43:37and down she goes on the other side.
43:39So the Byrne family,
43:41well there's Paul come in to help.
43:44So they've won at the top of the wall
43:46and here is Cathy Smith at this ice bath.
43:50It's not everybody's cup of tea.
43:52It's very, very cold.
43:54Some people just don't like the water
43:56but look at this.
43:58It's kind of messy from both families
43:59but now are the Byrne's about to overtake
44:04the Smith family.
44:05Cathy is at this water.
44:07She goes down underneath the water.
44:09No, she's come back up again.
44:10Okay.
44:11That's okay.
44:11The Smith family on the right
44:16in purple with Davy Fitz
44:17they're there losing time at this wall.
44:20They had a big lead earlier on.
44:22We heard the Byrnes talking to each other
44:24saying look they're not that far ahead
44:25and they've caught right up.
44:28Now the Smith family have got away from the wall
44:30so they have the lead again
44:32and Cathy well done.
44:33She's got underneath the water
44:34and under those tyres
44:35and out the other side.
44:38So what way is this going to finish?
44:40Get him up, whatever he has to do.
44:42Get him up.
44:44The tension builds.
44:45The pressure grows.
44:48So much at stake
44:49and the Byrne family
44:50they're away from that wall
44:53and here they are at the ice bath.
44:56The Smith family still lead.
44:58So they're up at that platform
44:59and now they have to go down that ladder
45:01with the cargo net.
45:02So the Byrne family
45:03they're all together
45:04and they're very nearly away
45:06from the ice bath
45:07and indeed now they are.
45:08So the Smith family
45:11getting a look at the ramp.
45:14This is Mark Smith
45:15first to take it on.
45:16That's a brilliant lead
45:17from Mark Smith.
45:18Now here come the Byrne family
45:19they're at the platform.
45:23Another successful attempt
45:24from the Smiths
45:26so they've got two out of four
45:27up there.
45:28That's superb
45:28but the Byrnes are closing.
45:30Michael Dara-Macaulay
45:31with them all the way.
45:32And Jack Byrne
45:33is at the ramp
45:34and he's had a go
45:35at that
45:35but he's come
45:35straight back down.
45:38Kathy Smith failing as well.
45:40She's going to have another go.
45:42The Smiths family
45:42have led right
45:43from the start
45:44of this eliminator
45:44but the Byrnes
45:45just keep at their heels.
45:47They won't give up.
45:48John Byrne on the right
45:49he's got up there
45:50so they've got one
45:50out of the four
45:51up at the top of the ramp.
45:53Jack for the Byrne family
45:55has taken his runners off
45:56and well that didn't work either.
45:58He's come straight back down.
46:00So Kathy Smith
46:01on the left there
46:01Kathy
46:02she would be the third
46:03up there
46:04and Jack has got up
46:05for the Byrne family
46:06has he?
46:07Another try to drag him up there
46:08that's John up there
46:09with him.
46:11This is really hard to watch.
46:13Everybody is absolutely
46:14exhausted
46:15and soaked to the skin
46:16and Jack has got up there
46:18so it's two for the Byrne family
46:19two for the Smith family
46:20can it be three now
46:21for the Smith family
46:22no Kathy's come back down again.
46:25And another fail
46:26from the Byrne family
46:28is trying to get
46:30any kind of grip
46:31on that ramp
46:32it's soaking.
46:33Here we go
46:34three for the Byrne family
46:35is it very nearly
46:36it very nearly is
46:38oh my word
46:39what a battle
46:39they've got three up there
46:40it's just about getting
46:41Ann Byrne up
46:42Ann just trying to calm down
46:44steady down
46:44there's three up
46:45for the Smiths now as well
46:46this is incredible
46:47it's going to be a photo finish
46:48Kathy Smith
46:49can she get to the top
46:50Ann has come back down
46:51for the Byrne family
46:52and Kathy's gone as well
46:53it's all down
46:55to the two mothers here
46:56can the rest of their family
46:58drag either of them
46:59to the top to win a place
47:00in the semi-final
47:01JV telling Kathy Smith
47:03just to calm down
47:04here she goes
47:04Kathy Smith
47:05and Kathy they've got her
47:06have they know
47:07she's slipped again
47:08they're holding on
47:09to the front of her shirt
47:09trying to get her up
47:10Ann Byrne tries again
47:11and she's just exhausted
47:12she can't get up there
47:13Kathy Smith
47:14is pulled to the top
47:15and the Smith family
47:16are true
47:17they've won the eliminator
47:18they are into the semi-finals
