00:00Is there someone that you still want to work with?
00:03I think Shinedown would be a fun tour.
00:06Even Avenged Sevenfold, as weird as that may sound to some people,
00:10I think that would be a really awesome tour.
00:16It's an Aussie check-in. It's Abe Cannon.
00:18I am joined by Daughtry.
00:20New single, Antidote, coming out.
00:21And the new EP. Well, it's been out.
00:24Shock to the System Part 2.
00:25I'm so happy that EPs are back
00:28because one of my favorite albums ever,
00:30Jar of Flies, Ellis and Chains, was an EP.
00:34Youngblood and Aerosmith put out an EP.
00:36You're putting out EPs.
00:38I'm so happy to see the return of the EP.
00:41Well, we didn't realize we were going to be so on trend.
00:46It kind of started with...
00:50We were just behind on getting the record done.
00:55And so the label was like,
00:57well, what if we split it up into two EPs?
00:59And I'm like, if we can do that, I'm in.
01:01That took all the pressure off.
01:03Is it still that it has to be under 30 minutes?
01:05Is that what makes an EP?
01:06Is that still the rule?
01:07Because things are digital now.
01:09It doesn't seem to matter as much.
01:11I actually don't know the rules.
01:13I just thought it was like three or more songs.
01:16Like three to six songs constitutes an EP.
01:19I didn't know there was a time limit, but that does make sense, I guess.
01:25Yeah.
01:25And I love the return of the EP because I don't think you need to put out full albums anymore.
01:30Because if you put out songs one at a time, two at a time, I feel like it gives your fans
01:35more time to absorb each song.
01:39We have fully experienced that.
01:41Um, and to the point where we've noticed far more engagement to all the newer stuff that
01:51we're playing because they got it in small doses, you know, and they were able to absorb
01:57it and digest it before the tour, as opposed to a full albums worth of stuff all at once.
02:05And they only latch onto like, you know, one or two songs.
02:07It's so funny.
02:08Cause when I was a kid, I remember like when Aerosmith put out, get a grip, like, you know,
02:12like, uh, crazy came out a year and a half after the album came out and it was like a
02:16new song back then.
02:18You're like, Whoa.
02:18And it's like, yeah.
02:20And it's been on a record for, you know, so it's like, it does, it does, it really
02:25does treat each song.
02:27Like it's a single.
02:28And I think that's a big deal.
02:29And I really do think it's better because in the fans, if you, if you put out 17 songs,
02:3590% of people aren't going to make it past 14.
02:37I mean, they'll listen a couple of times, but to listen all the way through, you give
02:41it to them slow.
02:41And they're like, they know every song when you're playing live.
02:44Right.
02:45Unless you're Taylor Swift and you put out a 24 song record and every one of them are
02:49on the charts.
02:50And it's like, what are we doing?
02:52Give us other little people a break.
02:56Is it weird for you?
02:58You're kind of like Madonna or slash or Prince.
03:01Like you're not Chris anymore.
03:03You're Daughtry.
03:04I bet a lot of people who aren't as familiar with you.
03:06They think your name is Daughtry.
03:08I bet they think that's your first name.
03:10They've been thinking that for years.
03:11Yeah.
03:12So I'm saying that's, what does that feel like to now you're, you're no longer Chris
03:15in the eyes of a lot of people.
03:16You're, you're like slash your daughter.
03:18I think, I think the weirdest thing is when fans have come up to me and either named their
03:24cat Daughtry or their kid, this is true.
03:30There's a, there is a girl out there in the universe that her first name is Daughtry.
03:35Oh, it's a girl.
03:36Wow.
03:37Yeah.
03:38I'm, I'm, I don't know the last name, so that would really, um, be interesting to, to know
03:44how those two ring together.
03:46But, uh, yeah.
03:47Um, and I never thought of it as a, as a, as a, you know, any other name than a surname,
03:55but, uh, here we are.
03:58You've done so many tours with so many massive artists.
04:02Like, I feel like you're the hardest working guy in rock.
04:04I feel like you're always on tour.
04:06It just never stops with you.
04:07Is there someone that you, that you still want to work with that you haven't worked with
04:11yet?
04:12Because you've done these huge tours with all these bands.
04:14You've done so many collaborations.
04:16Like who's on your list that you haven't gotten to yet?
04:20I, you know, I think, I think shinedown, um, would be a fun tour.
04:26Uh, even, even Avenged Sevenfold is as weird as that may sound to some people.
04:33I think that would be a really awesome tour.
04:36Um, I love, I love that, you know, we were able to go out with disturbed, which I think,
04:44you know, five years ago would have probably been laughable to a lot of their fans.
04:51And the fact that you're, you're, you're on the map now with the rock fans.
04:54You're not like that anymore.
04:56Yeah, dude.
04:57We went out on stage and it was like the place lit up and we're like, Oh, this is working.
05:01Um, you know, um, so yeah, I was, I was at the show in Sacramento when you came out and
05:06did land of confusion with disturb.
05:08It was awesome.
05:09Yeah.
05:10That was so much fun, man.
05:11That was a great tour.
05:13And that show was the one actually where David proposed to his girlfriend.
05:17That was the show.
05:18Yeah.
05:19So they just got married last weekend.
05:21Yeah.
05:21I saw, did you go to that wedding or no?
05:24I, funny enough, I was actually in the town they got married in on the day they got married
05:29doing a show.
05:31It was the end of the tour and, uh, yeah, I couldn't, I couldn't make it.
05:36You didn't go to the after party.
05:38No, the after party was, uh, was going to bed.
05:42Yeah.
05:42We, we all had early flights.
05:43You said it, man.
05:44We've been on tour for ever, uh, this year and all we wanted was to be done, you know,
05:51at the end of the night.
05:52And, uh, and I got home for 48 hours and now I'm, now I'm here.
05:58So we're talking about the new EP shock to the system part two, but if you don't mind,
06:02I'd like to just talk about part one really quick.
06:04My all time, my all time favorite Daughtry song.
06:07And it's your heaviest song.
06:09The dam.
06:10I love that song.
06:11So when I first heard the dam, I didn't even know that was you.
06:14I'm like, I'm like, sometimes you hear a song.
06:16You're like, who is that?
06:17And then there's, I'm like, Oh, it's Daughtry.
06:18This is all, I mean, what is like, you mentioned opening for revenge sevenfold that, like you
06:24said, it's weird to some people.
06:26I don't think it's weird at all.
06:26If you hear a song like the dam.
06:28Thank you, man.
06:29Um, yeah, I, that's one of my, I think favorite songs on the whole part one or two, uh, especially
06:38to play live.
06:39It just, it's just one of those that it just hits, you know, so it's so heavy.
06:45It's just like, Oh yeah, it's pretty awesome.
06:47Uh, you put out a video to your fans and it's funny.
06:50We were just talking about disturbed.
06:51Every time I post something about disturbed on Facebook, whatever, Instagram, there's
06:57always a fake David Draymond who pops in and says, my brother, my sister, or he's like,
07:02Hey, let me, uh, uh, um, thank you so much for following the band.
07:07Uh, and then, you know, he's sending them a DM and you put out this great video saying,
07:12Hey, any number one, Chris Daughtry is never going to ask you for money.
07:16He's never going to send you a DM.
07:18Right.
07:19It's going to be very obvious if it's him and he doesn't have nine followers either.
07:22So if you see an account with nine followers, just know that's not him.
07:26All these scams going on is crazy.
07:29It's so funny when, when I post something and then another me starts chiming in, in the
07:35comments, thanking them for being, I'm like, loser.
07:38You're I'm right here, like, like beat it.
07:42I'm blocking people all the time and reporting accounts.
07:45It is the fact that they can get accounts so easily, but even worse than that is that
07:53these bots can create these fake headlines and fake quotes and get away with it is, uh,
07:59is it, I don't understand how it doesn't violate some sort of, um, you know, Facebook code or
08:09whatever, but there's loopholes and they're getting away with it.
08:12And it's funny because in the video you posted, you were showing AI examples, which are so
08:16obviously fake, but we're, we're two years away from that obviously fake video.
08:22It's going to look like you right now on this screen.
08:24So I've seen, I've seen some that they, the, you can always tell with the mouth, it doesn't
08:33quite line up with the audio, but I mean, it's getting there and it's, and it's scary.
08:39It's terrifying.
08:40And, you know, I think about kids who are born, like I'm, I'm a little bit, a couple of years
08:45younger than we're, we're right around the same age.
08:47We're the last generation that grew up pre-technology, right?
08:51We, I didn't have a cell phone until I was like 16 or something.
08:53You'd have to go knock on your friend's door.
08:55You'd have to memorize phone numbers.
08:57Wait, I was 21 when I got my first, uh, so it's like the same time.
09:02I'm like three years younger than you or something.
09:03So it's like the exact same thing.
09:05And I feel bad for these kids because that's all they know is all this crazy technology.
09:10But the one thing I have noticed, the benefit of that is it's cool to them to see physical
09:16media, like vinyls back.
09:18Right.
09:18And it invites them because they didn't, they're like, Whoa, what's this?
09:22This is awesome because to them, digital music, isn't cool.
09:25Like it was when it first came out, when we first heard it, wait till they see a VCR.
09:32Exactly.
09:33Well, you know, cassettes are, I mean, you probably know this cassette.
09:36Do you make, do you make cassettes of your music or not?
09:39We haven't, uh, we haven't gone down the cassette lane.
09:41We've talked about it, but, um, I don't, I didn't, I didn't know how in demand that was.
09:47Uh, I know vinyl is a, it's a, I like vinyl because you, it's a square, right?
09:52You got the full artwork.
09:53You got to alter the artwork for a cassette, you know?
09:56Yeah.
09:56I always hated cassettes.
09:57Like I, I, I was never a big cassette fan, but I did love CDs, but, but vinyl, like you
10:02said, when I was a kid, you'd, you'd read the lyrics and stuff.
10:04Look at the, it's, it's a whole experience that I think it's, I'm glad it's coming back
10:09at least somewhat.
10:10And on the cassette, I don't have to zoom in.
10:15Exactly.
10:16I can actually read everything.
10:17Before we got started, you're in New York right now.
10:20And I was asking you, I said, Hey, you're, you're always like ripped.
10:23You're in such great shape.
10:24Do you ever just eat like someone like me would eat in New York?
10:27Like I would just eat everything in New York, bro.
10:32When this day is over, I'm going ham on some pizza.
10:35So I, I, I, I definitely, uh, I definitely save up for these, these occasions I have,
10:44I have, I have, I have like once or twice a week where I'll just go off the rails.
10:49Oh, really?
10:50Yeah.
10:51See, I'm the opposite of you.
10:52I have two days where I don't go off the rails.
10:57Some, some weeks I, I, I don't do it at all.
11:00It, I have, it has to be really worth it.
11:02You know, that, uh, David Portnoy, he, he, he like rates the pizza or whatever.
11:07The pizza thing.
11:08Yeah.
11:08Yeah.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Apparently right by our hotel, there's like a 9.2 rating.
11:15So when this day is over, I am absolutely going to go see what that pizza is about.
11:20Uh, yeah, I, I, I try to keep my, uh, my cheat days to a minimum during the week.
11:26Yeah.
11:27Do you think that since you were born the day after Christmas, that that was a weird way
11:31as a kid, I feel like you never really get to celebrate your birthday.
11:34Did that affect you in any way as an adult?
11:37Yeah.
11:37It lowered my expectations of what to expect for my birthday.
11:41Cause you know, as a kid, as a kid, you, you always are aware of how many Christmas
11:46presents you have under the tree.
11:48Yeah.
11:49You count them.
11:50You take mental note of the wrapping paper.
11:53And I remember this one year we're all done unwrapping presents.
11:59And then I, I remember, I was like, wait a minute, there was one like in gold wrapping
12:06paper.
12:06It was about like this.
12:08And my mom's like, I don't know what you're talking about.
12:10And I was like, no, no, no, no.
12:11It was, it was like right here.
12:13It had my name on it.
12:15And she's like, no, I don't know.
12:16Anyway, what I think we are, guess what I got on my birthday, pulled that shit right
12:22out from under the tree.
12:23It was like, oh, we must've forgot to get Chris a birthday present.
12:26Let's take one of his Christmas presents away and we'll give it to him tomorrow.
12:30My friend was born the day after Christmas.
12:32His mom gave him, she bought him an Xbox for Christmas, but then she gave him the power
12:37cable and a controller for his birthday.
12:40He's on your birthday.
12:43You get to use it.
12:44Yeah.
12:45Exactly.
12:46Well, this is one of the greatest guys in rock music support.
12:48This man, Daughtry, Chris Daughtry.
12:51Thank you, man.
12:51You're antidote.
12:53The new EP shock to the system.
12:55It's out now.
12:55Go listen to it, you know, stream it, buy it, share it, get the cassette, get the vinyl
13:02downloaded.
13:04And last thing, Chris, you have some wonderful fans.
13:08What do you want to say directly to your fans as we wrap this up?
13:10Oh, thank you for everything.
13:12Thank you for letting me live this life.
13:14I appreciate you.
13:15Thank you so much.
13:17Awesome, man.
13:17Take care.
13:18Have a great time in New York.
13:19All right.
13:19You too, man.
13:20Bye.
13:20Bye.
