00:00it's an odyssey check-in it's abe cannon i am here with chad gray mudvane 16 years
00:07no mudvane music and now we have two new songs yep that's how we did it sticks and stones i mean
00:14it was worth the wait it is you know i i listened to it and then i listened to it again and then i
00:20listened to it again and it's one of those songs it just keeps getting better like it just really
00:27you hear it and then it just keeps getting it's just one of those songs there's certain songs they
00:31just keep getting better after absolutely well too man like you like you like you know obviously
00:36first pass through you're just little things are jumping out at you the more you listen to it the
00:40more you can hear the lyrical content the more and then the more you hear that the more you know that
00:45then you start putting together the concept of what you think it's about and you know what i mean like
00:49i was like that with all with you know with all my music too like growing up and the things that
00:55influenced me man like i remember the you know the but those first lessons you know like holy
00:59you know those moments man i remember like you know uh just like standout stuff you know like
01:08master puppets or far beyond driven damn it that's nothing you know what you get like that corn twist
01:15you know that was the title of that or that was the first track on that album i remember putting it
01:20in the car and just being like what the you know what is this you know what i mean there's been so
01:26many great records like that you know and the more you delve into them the more you listen the more
01:30you pull out the lyrics and stuff like that you start creating your own concepts i think about a
01:34kid in 2025 hearing vulgar display of power for the first time like it just it just like i'm jealous
01:41of them that they get even like ellison chains dirt or just something like you hear something now
01:46in 2025 you must your mind must be blown if you're a kid hearing that today absolutely 100 those are
01:53the greats right those are the those are the those are the greats of of great and that that music is
01:59undeniable from the time it was created for 20 30 years man like it's they'll still be attacking people
02:06the same way now as it what as it did to us and it's so weird too because like when i was a kid like
02:12my mom like went to like a doris concert she went to see led zeppelin and now these kids they're
02:16parents uh whoever metallica uh mudvane you know uh pearl jam whoever whoever the band might be
02:22it just it's weird to me that those bands now are about the same age that i was when i was hearing
02:28led zeppelin i'm like yeah dude i mean when i like uh when i was a kid classic rock was radio
02:37i mean when i was three years old frampton do you feel and eagles and zeppelin and that was all on the
02:45radio like when i'd be in the back seat of my mom's car playing with hot wheels on the back seat
02:50and those songs were all on the radio you know what i mean so it's just like yeah it's just so
02:55cool the evolution and those songs are still great all those songs are still great you know what i mean
03:01sabbath is still great it's as great as it was the day it was written you know i always say that
03:07peter frampton stayed alive too long because if peter frampton would have died after frampton comes
03:11alive he'd be right now like jimmy hendrix or something oh absolutely yeah he's he's he's amazing
03:17man so it was so good i just it's like you know it's a bummer to me and it's okay and i'm not you
03:25know kind of pissing on the way things are today but just like don't you remember like getting in the
03:30car with your friends and going to the record store and standing on the sidewalk and waiting with
03:34a line of people down the street yeah and you go in and you grab that album you run out to your car
03:39and you put it in and you listen to the whole thing top to bottom right there in the car then
03:43you listen to it again on the way home and then you get home and you put it in you listen to it on
03:48your home stereo it's just like man you know those were such amazing times we used to plan parties
03:54around you know the night you know monday nights and stuff like back in the day tuesday i say it all
04:00the time i was born in 1981 i feel like i'm so lucky because i got a good 16 17 years of the old way
04:07you know i would go to album release parties i used to wait in line for concert tickets
04:11i got absolutely no cell phones no computers i got to experience up until i was about 16 with you
04:18know the way my mom grew up and and the kids today they don't get to experience that no not at all i
04:24mean everything is a matter of convenience now right you know what i mean it's just like that's the way
04:29but whatever we can't change you know i'm not that old man like technology you know what i mean i like
04:34my iphone as much as the next guy but there's just you're right like there's certain new stuff
04:40i won't do but absolutely not like we don't we don't run track we don't play to a click we don't
04:46we don't play to anything it's all live and it's all real that's how it's supposed to be you know
04:51what was it like after 16 years to record with mudvane again sticks and stones is the new song
04:57yeah it was awesome man it was it was cool you know i mean like writing's always a pain you know
05:04it's a process but the the process is paramount the process is the is is the part you know because
05:10you go through the struggles and whatever and then you but you eventually get to the end you know the
05:16end is great and um but you know and then but then you kind of start all over again with recording
05:22you know you start writing and demoing and then you get the rough lay of the land and then you go
05:29into record and you you know you do it all over again you know hopefully better than you did before
05:34you know and um yeah it's it's it's a great process man it's it's frustrating and but it's great it's
05:42fun man i love to create that's like just that's that's why i'm here you know to do it and uh and i'm
05:48happy to be doing it i'm happy to be doing it with this band again you know what i mean this
05:52was the reason why i came back to my bank was to continue the legacy you know we went away before
05:57people were ready for us to go away i think yeah when we came back like that was my biggest reason
06:03for coming back was to continue pick up where we left off and continue to to create music um and give
06:09our fans what they what they need what what you know what we what we didn't give them so we come
06:14back you know and then it's been you know we've been back for like this will be our fourth year i think
06:18that we've been back and um it's just time you know what i mean it was time we tried this a couple
06:24years ago and it just didn't work and then uh and then we you know we we got back in and and we got
06:31back to it and we went back to then pick through some of those old parts and um and we're able to put
06:36these tracks together and then you know we went in the process of recording man it was it was really
06:41cool but it's a very necessary time you know i think we came back and the ground was seriously
06:48rumbling like the ground was shaking was like holy hell like people are really excited about this oh
06:52yeah the band is i think i mean the positioning of you guys if you look at the totally you guys are
06:57doing aftershock like all the you guys are like right at the top of all the stores i feel like the
07:01band is as big or bigger than ever am i it's bigger than we were 100 bigger than we were for sure
07:07um there was just more anticipation more excitement around it you know um that that your whole career
07:13is kind of a slow burn right you know just like yeah you're working a little bit working a little
07:16bit working with your you're going up it's it's a very gradual build um just natural time right you
07:23know going away and then coming back was like you know like ground was shaking but then you do a tour
07:30you do that comeback tour and then you do and that's all the touring we did until the next year tour
07:36that's all the touring we did until the next year tours is like the ground shaking and you just
07:42like start kind of going like this and i was just like we need to put out new music like i want to get
07:46the ground shaking again you know what i mean i want to get i want to get i want to keep people
07:50excited about this i don't just want to come back you know blow our wad and then just fucking
07:55slowly drift off you know what i mean like no like i want to come in with a bang i want to go out
08:00with a bang you know i'm saying so you think people didn't appreciate how great mud vein are and now
08:05you've been going it's almost like you know i always say the football season there's time for
08:08us to miss the football season i'm like oh man i'm excited you know mud vein have been gone so long
08:14they're like man this band was awesome people are just like just people just forgot how great you guys
08:20were yeah i think we're a little you know like always we're a little different like we're a little
08:24a little misunderstood we weren't as easy we were a little more difficult you know we were a little
08:29we were a little harder listen you know um but that's always something that we've strove to do is
08:34like kind of make make make everyone have to earn it was certainly we certainly earned it by writing
08:39it you know but um we weren't just that like just nice easy or just nice and it's straight you know
08:48what i mean like that straightforward kind of four on the floor stuff which is awesome dude like those
08:53are my like dig is pretty much right up the fucking middle right you know what i mean but you know then
08:58you get into some of some of the deeper stuff all through our career there's those moments happy
09:03was right up the middle not falling was right up the middle but there's you know all over those
09:08records man there's a lot of really whoa dudes like what are you doing you know but uh you know
09:15it's kind of what sticks is to me you know what i mean it's kind of just that right up the middle
09:19thing that i think we need it like you know what i mean like i really think we needed this
09:23you guys it's a huge tour it's the 25th anniversary of your first album like i said i can't believe it
09:28it's just unbelievable to me that came out 20 it seems like it seems like it came out like 10 years
09:36ago 15 like 25 i'm like god that's a long time dude that's a long time bro but you you guys are
09:42playing aftershock right before rob zombie and i i've always wanted to ask you that have you guys ever
09:47thought about doing what rob zombie did and do a mud vein haunted house like on your tour have part
09:53of the tour be that your fans could walk through the mud vein haunted house let me get a pen
09:58write that down real fast cool idea dude you know what i mean i don't know dude just you know the
10:06thing about that stuff is like that that's rob's thing you know i mean rob like rob is like that you
10:11know that is his thing like to curate something like that yeah that's a lot of hands-on stuff and he's
10:16that guy like he is that guy did you ever go to his haunted house they put they put a bag they put
10:21a bag over your head when you go in and it's like really yeah the bag it's like picture all the
10:28helitosis and all the dudes just picture go into a mosh pit think about all the dudes right now picture
10:34you put a bag over all their head then put that bag on a hundred other guys heads and you're putting
10:38it on it was the most disgusting thing ever but it was it's just like what kind of haunted house is
10:42it's just i have a bag on my head like that's crazy is like burlap or like paper burlap sack
10:48like a burlap sack yeah that's cool it's great he doesn't do it where they're like eye holes and it
10:53was like a mask no so you're covered and if you take it off they're like get the f out of here like
10:58they kick you out if you take it off your head this was many years ago when he did the haunted
11:02in chicago i went to this haunted house and kick you out if you take it off your head
11:07the whole time you have to wear a bag over your head i think i think at one point you get to take
11:12it off but most of it you have a bag on your head it's great that seems crazy it's like i'm gonna go
11:20to a movie here put this bag on your head like uh kind of need to see it and it's not in your own bag
11:26you shared the bags oh my god man we got to get a washing machine involved in that somewhere i know we
11:33don't have much time but there's a couple things i just want to ask you really quick so we just lost
11:36ozzy osbourne when i was a kid oz fest was the most important thing to me because all the bands
11:41i love that was the only place i could see all these bands you guys played oz fest yeah what did
11:48oz fest mean to you as a band everything like dude like so and this is what i said like you know like
11:54i just kind of googled like how many bands have been on oz fest and it's like north of 125 or 150 or
11:59something like that like bullshit so i went and i went through every oz fest and saw the whole lineups
12:05and counted the whole thing and i counted over 360 bands wow so think about what like his contribution
12:12to music we could never pay back right to all to like what he did from being such an inspiration
12:19with all of the music he did with black Sabbath and then doing you know ozzy solo stuff it's like
12:24just the inspirations he created from what he did is unprecedented and then you know you got to think
12:31about back to like he broke metallica straight up like he took them on the road with him he put
12:38metallica on an ozzy size stage on master puppets and dude from that moment on it was game over right
12:46so what does he do he continued now now he creates a festival where he's not just it's not just one
12:53band or two bands you know an opener and a direct support that he can help now it's a gaggle of bands
13:01every single year yeah we were on that second stage system of a down was on the second stage
13:06slipknot was on the second stage i mean just go down the list of just second stage of drowning pool
13:12just go down the list of just second stage acts yeah outside of the main stage the year i was on it was
13:17manson papa roach lincoln park disturbed us drowning like the man i saw pantera many times i was at the
13:27oz fest when ozzy did a set and then the black sabbath reunion happened for the first time they
13:32did like eight songs like pantera i i know we got to go over pantera it's fine you know you were you
13:37were in uh hell yeah i just have to ask you um did you ever get to go because i went to the clubhouse
13:43the strip oh yeah dallas texas with with vinnie paul oh yeah when i was my first time ever on a
13:50plane i was 21 years old flying from chicago to texas we went right to the clubhouse i maybe my
13:56mind isn't remembered correctly i've never been to a strip club in my life that was that great
14:00it was the greatest like strip club i've ever seen in my life we recorded the first three albums
14:05in dallas so yeah i've been to the clubhouse many times this is like a stomping ground what's cool
14:11about it too is a byob so you weren't paying these ridiculous you know like strip club drink prices
14:19you know what i mean it's like you just brought your own bottle brought your own beer brought your
14:22own mixers and here we go you know it was cool just being in a band with vinnie paul that was
14:27just a party like every night again he's like he's like that same kind of ozzy character just warm
14:34hospitable caring giving like beyond you know that's what ozzy did that's what vinnie did like vinnie
14:41was mr showtime that's what his rooming list name was was mr showtime because man he was always
14:48going he always wanted to be there he always wanted to give back we would do you know we would go on
14:53tour man and he would bust out the grill man we'd be in there prepping all day to cook for the whole
14:58tour or to go or play in festivals or whatever and we just like we would set up outside and we would cook
15:04and all were welcome you know and that was just and that was all out of his pocket he paid for all
15:10of them and he did all the time and we all worked hard for it you know because we were doing something
15:16to honor him as he honored everyone else you know it's just it was cool man it was like like a very
15:21family affair with him you know it's a very exciting time new mud vein nude the huge maybe your biggest
15:27tour ever uh sticks and stones what a great song like i said it just keeps getting better and better
15:32um thank you i can't wait to hear the rest of the album whenever it comes out um and thank you so
15:38much last thing what do you want to say directly to your fans because you have amazing mud vein fans
15:43come to the shows man like let's come to these shows like people need to give themselves a break
15:47right it's just like life just just pounds at you man pounds pounds pounds jobs bills blah blah blah
15:54all this stuff you know when you come to a show when you go to a metal show man you just
15:58just leave everything you've got at the door it's easy to walk around like this right like we
16:04live our whole life like you're gonna struggle and do that's hard that's the answer though open your
16:12hands and let all that stuff go come in the room lose your mind with us don't think about anything
16:19except yourself honor yourself give yourself a break come to the show let go and it'll all be there
16:27when you walk out but take a break come to the show and let's get nuts new mud vein sticks and
16:33stones out now new tour chad thank you so much thank you man i appreciate you very much man thank you
